Domtar reunion and fundraiser set to rekindle friendships Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s been 10 years since Domtar’s Cornwall location closed its doors but a committee of past employees have joined together and planned a special reunion and fundraiser to bring everyone together again and to benefit the United Way. The fundraiser gets underway at 5:00pm on Friday, September 30 at the Army Navy Air Force Club on Marlborough Street and will include a spaghetti dinner and live entertainment from former Domtar employee, Rick Filion. The evening is meant to bring together former Domtar employees, giving old colleagues and friends a chance to reconnect after a decade and to reminisce about the good old days. The pulp and paper mill ceased operation on March 24, 2006 and while some old colleagues have stayed in touch, there were those who moved out of town or lost touch following the closure and this reunion is a chance to have everyone back together again. Mitch Fobert-Irving was an employee for 17 and a half years, working the number nine coater, and has played a large part in planning the upcoming event. She explained the void the closure left. “Back then, all of our lives revolved around our friends at Domtar and it almost

felt like getting a divorce. We spent so much time together, we would work 12 hour shifts then go out for dinner or go bowling and then, all of a sudden, we no longer had those long hours with each other”. After recently losing a few co-workers and friends, the committee was formed and it was decided that meeting at funeral homes would no longer suffice and that a happy occasion needed to be planned so that everyone could get together under better circumstances. “We wanted to plan a fun evening of reminiscing and rekindling those old friendships” said Debbie Fraser, committee member and former 20 year employee. Deric Latour is also on the planning committee and was a Mill Hand at Domtar for 29 years. He said “We threw around a lot of ideas like a picnic or a golf tournament, even a hockey tournament, but at the end of the day we realized we just wanted to have a get-together and enjoy each other’s company”. All the proceeds from the event will go to the United Way, a charity that Domtar always supported in the past. Between the years 2000-2006, Domtar and its employees raised over $515,000 for the charity and many former employees still hold the cause close to their hearts. A silent auction will be taking place during the evening and while many great gifts have been secured, prizes are still being accepted and businesses or individuals

Tickets for the event are $15 and on sale now at the Army Navy Air Force Club, the United Way, and by emailing domtarreunion2016@outlook.com. Past workers are encouraged to join the Facebook group

entitled “Former Domtar Employees” which will contain updates about the fundraiser. Because of the 300 person capacity, only former employees and their spouses are eligible to attend but if there are extra tickets remaining closer to the date, they will become available to the public.

Meet the faces of this year’s United Way of SD&G fundraising campaign CORNWALL, Ontario - Bill Makinson and Pauline Bray are the faces of this year’s United Way of SD&G’s Fundraiser campaign, but behind those faces are an army of volunteers and a wave of support from the community that makes the work of the United Way possible. “We’ve got a great team,” said Bill Makinson, the Chair of the United Way’s 2016 campaign. “Lori (Greer) guides us and we’ve got a lot of men and women behind us. It always amazes me how much support there is in this community and we can’t thank the community enough for supporting the United Way.” Bill has a history of volunteering and managing charity drives in the area. He was on the board of the local branch of Big Brothers & Big Sisters for 10 years and served as president during that time. “I’ve seen how a non-profit works at the

board level,” he said. In addition to his work with Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Bill also worked on the committee for the MS Society Golf Tournament and Chaired that committed for five years. He said that these experiences showed him that the most important part of running a charity campaign is to tell the stories of the organization and the people it helps. “To run a fundraising campaign, its about telling stories,” said Bill. “To Make sure that people know about the organization so that they feel good about giving their money to the non-profit.” Bill’s Co-Chair, Pauline Bray, said that her experience in helping non-profit groups has shown her the real-world impact that they can have. “I’ve worked with the Liver Foundation,” she said. “My nephew was born with a liver disease and we turned to the Foundation for help. They

needed volunteers and I jumped in with both feet. After seven years of volunteering with the Foundation, they found a cure for my nephew.” Bill said that he wanted someone who was bilingual as his Co-Chair and that it was his wife who first suggested Pauline. “It is up to a Chair to decide to have a Co-Chair or not,” said Bill. “It was very important to me to have someone in the community and someone who was bilingual.” “I gave my address at the kickoff breakfast in French,” Pauline said. “Bernadette Clement came up to me after and thanked me in French and so did about five other people. For the Francophones in the community, it was clearly Pauline Bray and Bill Makinson. The important to them.” Co-Chair and Chair of this year’s United Bill and Pauline feel that they will be able to Way of SD&G fundraising campaign combine their connections to the community to (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). help the United Way reach its 2016 campaign Way of SD&G call 613-932-2051 or email info@ goal of $700, 000. Local man leaves legacy of generosity to CCH

6 - Thursday, September 22, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - A local Cornwall man recently left behind a generous donation to a pillar of the community. Born, raised and educated in Cornwall, C. Anthony Viau was always determined to give back to the city where he grew up. A veteran of World War II, Anthony went to McGill after his service was over, then worked at Nortel in Montreal until he returned to Cornwall after his retirement. At 92 years old, on Feb. 24, 2016, Anthony passed away at Cornwall Community Hospital,

leaving $300,000 to CCH’s Foundation in his estate. “Our Foundation is incredibly grateful for Mr. Viau’s generosity,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation. “All donations are important to our Foundation, and legacy gifts like Anthony’s allow us to make a deeper impact with equipment and services that enhance the lives of local patients.” Anthony is survived by sister Madeleine (Viau) Lalonde of Cornwall (A1 Driving School)

and his nephew and niece, Lloyd and Patty Lalonde. “I’m proud of my brother and the contribution he made to the hospital. It’s something he always wanted to do,” said Ms. Lalonde.

Madeleine Lalonde proudly holds a picture of her brother, Anthony Viau, who left Cornwall Community Hospital $300,000 in his estate.

Participants gather at Civic Complex to pay tribute to Terry Fox Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Millions of Canadians from across the country were following in the footsteps of a true Canadian hero today. For well over three decades Canadians have been running, walking, cycling, or skating to help raise funds and awareness for cancer research, all inspired by Terry Fox’s 1981 run across the country. It’s an important day to many, especially the volunteers and participants who showed up at the Cornwall Civic Complex for 7 a.m.. “I’d like to send a big thank you to all the sponsors,” said Josee Sauve. “Everything you see...everything is donated. So all the local

people donated that stuff. No one is paid to be here. We are all volunteers.” “We all know the dreaful disease cancer, and almost everyone is affected by it,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, who was in attendence to kick off the day, alongside MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim McDonell. For one volunteer, Monique Brancheaud, the Terry Fox Run is an annnual family tradition. Her mother, Denise Levac, has volunteered at the registration desk, while her father, Albert Levac, does the 10 kilometres. At 76 years old, today he was walking for the cause. Brancheaud had a special contribution for today’s Run, a quilt made from her father’s old Terry Fox tshirts that decorated the Civic Complex.

Cornwall Takes Back the Night Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario – A mighty roar was heard through the streets of Cornwall on Thursday night as people marched together, calling for the end of sexual and domestic violence. Take Back the Night kicked off with activities and a rally at Equipe Psycho-Social on McConnell Avenue to energize the group of survivors and allies before heading outside for a steadfast march. Flanked by police cars and a decorated city bus for those who preferred not to walk, the march headed down McConnell to Montreal Road, coming back up Belmont Street and finishing at La Citadelle. Angela Vinet, Executive Director of Sexual Assault Support Services for Women (SASS) and one of the event organizers explained “Together, we raise our voices and say sexual and domestic violence needs to end”. Short, powerful chants united the group of

marchers who proclaimed “No means no” and “We have the right to walk the night” and colourful but impactful signs helped get their message across. Rejuvenated in Cornwall four years ago, Take Back the Night helps to shed light on these specific issues around the world and specifically within individual communities. Event organizer and Public Education and Volunteer Coordinator for SASS, Jillian Reed, explained more: “Sexual violence absolutely happens in this area and we know it’s happening but we’re not talking about it enough but [Take Back the Night] is helping to open up that line of communication”. The event was organized by a committee of four local agencies, Maison Baldwin House, SASS, Maison Interlude House, and Victim Services of SDGA, all of whom provide support to victims of sexual and domestic violence and abuse. One of the evening’s guest speakers, Councillor Bernadette Clement, made an impactful speech including a heartfelt sentiment that had many in attendance nodding their heads.

Event Organizers from left-to-right: Dominique Terriah (Victims Services SDGA), Maxine LeBlanc (Maison Interlude House), Danielle MacNeil (Maison Baldwin House), and Jillian Reed (SASS for Women) (Shannon Ferguson/ Seaway News). “Cornwall is fantastic; we have a great Business Park, the Benson Centre, Lamoureux Park, but all of that doesn’t mean anything if our residents don’t have support when they face challenges” she added“the work of [these local agencies] is so helpful to so many and I am grateful to all of the people who do this work because they really do support

our residents and help make them happy”. To find out more information about the support services available in the community you can call any of the following agencies: Maison Baldwin House (613-938-3903), Maison Interlude House (613-525-5338), SASS for Women (613-932-1755), or Victim Services of SDGA (613-938-8900).

There is 12 tonnes less garbage in the St. Lawrence River Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The clean-up effort spearheaded by the St. Lawrence River Institute along with its partners in the Upper St. Lawrence Protection Network announced on Friday, Sept. 16 that they had successfully pulled nearly 12 tonnes of garbage out of the river. Friday was their last clean-up day, they held three others throughout the summer. On Friday, there were still more than 100 people doing yet another sweep of the St. Lawrence. The team on Friday included 40 CCVS

students who where picking up garbage along the coast and two teams of divers pulling stuff up from the bottom. “We decided to go big or go home,” said Karen Cooper, the River Institute’s Communications Officer. The Upper St. Lawrence Protection Network is a union of community groups who each have an interest in keeping the St. Lawrence Rive clean. One of those groups is the Lunkers of SD&G. “As fisherman we would see tires, plastic, barrels, tras cans and pieces of steel in the river, which is our playground,” said Mark Kaddie of the SD&G Lunkers.

Another group in the network that Karen Cooper lauded for their help was the first nations of Akwesasne. Both the Mohawk Council of Akwasasne and the Mohawks from the American side of the Island volunteered to help. “They’ve really been invaluable,” Cooper said. “They know the waterways so well. We are the only ecological partnership of this kind with First Nations in Canada.” Mark Kaddie said that now that some of the garbage is out of the river, that now the focus was on keeping it out. He said the fact that so many volunteers were local youths was important. “We want to teach them that this is our city, be proud of it and this is our river, be proud of it,”

news

he said. Cooper said that this program will likely continue in the future because of the Ministry of the Environment’s enthusiasm about it. She said that the Ministry was impressed with how hands on and intensive the Network’s efforts were. The efforts of the Network included the use of a crane to lift stuff off of the bottom of the river. None of this would have been possible however without the support and grant money the St. Lawrence River Institute received from the Province of Ontario, the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the RBC Blue Water Fund.

opinion

The new Nationals I checked the Guinness Book of Records but couldn’t find anything to do with the quickest birth of a hockey team, but I’m sure that the speedy, overnight delivery of the Cornwall Nationals Hockey Club would be hard to beat. The time between crawling under the sheets (with the Federal Hockey League) and the birth announcement was days, not months. It cut short the River Kings’ mourning period. The Nationals, who as of Monday had two gung-ho owners, a snappy logo and four players, two of whom are local guys, open the Federal Hockey League season at the Lumley Arena on Oct. 30 against the Danville Dashers (great handle). Danville, population 33,000, is in Illinois, about a two-hour drive south of Chicago. Other league members are Watertown Wolves, Port Huron (Michigan) Prowlers, St. Clair Shores (Michigan) Fighting Saints, Berlin (New Hampshire) River Drivers and Danbury (Connecticut) Titans. With Watertown the closest opponent, a threehour drive, winter bus trips to New Hampshire, Michigan, Connecticut and Illinois represent a huge travel challenge. It gets better/worse next season when Winston-Salem joins the Federal family and North Carolina becomes an overnight road trip. This gives new meaning to “Road Warriors”. The schedule, at least for the late-arriving Nationals, has some punishing stretches that will test the team’s physical mettle with several threegames-in-three-nights marathons. The strangest three-game stretch starts on

Friday, March 3 with the Nationals in New Hampshire against the River Drivers. The teams play in Cornwall the next day. Then they are back in New Hampshire for a Sunday afternoon game, that is if half the players aren’t in an oxygen tent. So, what is the calibre of the “new” FHL? It is fair to say you won’t see FHL game highlights on TSN or Sportsnet. Over its brief life, several FHL players have graduated to the East Coast Hockey League and American Hockey League, so it isn’t your quintessential ‘beer league’. But most rosters are made up of former major junior, college and pro players, along with some Europeans, living the dream and making a few bucks. There is one name that jumps off the page. The Watertown Wolves signed Phil Esposito as coach. Not THE Phil Esposito. Just a guy with the same name. Federal league players are among the lowest paid pro athletes. The weekly salary cap per team is $5,000 and change. The minimum salary is said to be $297 per week, which is why it is a good idea to have a rich aunt or a day job. The big bonus for Fed players is free dental insurance. Next rung up on the hockey ladder, the East Coast Hockey League, has a minimum $460 a week. The league has had some “interesting” moments. Like the March 3, 2012 playoff game between Thousand Islands and Akwesasne at the Ed Lumley Arena. Thousand Islands, now Watertown, didn’t show up, so players from local men’s hockey league teams were conscripted. It

was a laugher. Akwesasne, with 70 shots on net, won 22-8. The biggest news item to come out of the Federal league was in a New York State courtroom in 2015 when a federal judge ordered the league to pay a Danville player $800,000 for loss of an eye when he was struck by an opponent’s stick. Then there was the hilarious Slap Shot style hug-and-beer-fight stunt staged by two opponents that grabbed the attention of Sports Illustrated. Look it up on the internet. Nationals owners Rodney Rivette and Mitch Gagne say the league has re-invented itself as a good on-ice product sans the Slap Shot baggage. It’s not the American Hockey League, but they believe the Federal brand offers good entertainment for a reasonable price. “Fans are going to be (pleasantly) surprised (with the calibre),” said Gagne who has no doubt the Nationals will be competitive despite putting it all together in a few weeks. As they say in TV land .... stay tuned. NOTES AND QUOTES: An Ontario Provincial Police study on how much it would cost Brockville to replace the city’s police force with the provincial force is expected by the end of October. ... The Cat is back in Atlanta after the annual visit to his home town. (He’s getting better at backing up his motor home with car in tow but John Gallinger down in Windsor says he still needs some practice). The Cat says he’s working on a couple of projects (in Atlanta). TRIVIA ANSWER: Beach Hall was part of St. Paul’s United Church, First and Sydney streets, which was ripped down to make room for the Cornwall Square parking garage. It wasn’t exactly a

fair exchange when it came to architectural beauty. TRIVIA: Prime Minister John Diefenbaker’s wife laid the cornerstone for First Baptist Church at York and Third streets. What was her first name? THE OTHER CRAWFORD: The Ottawa Senators signed a pair of Crawfords over the summer. One, of course, was Marc Crawford who was named as associate coach. The other was Dylan Crawford who is the new video coach for the NHL team’s American Hockey League club, Binghampton Senators. He is the son of Marc and Helene Crawford. He comes with plenty of experience. He spent four years as a consultant with the British Columbia minor hockey program before going to prime time with the Vancouver Canucks hockey development department and the Dallas Stars as video coach. He also did time with the National Hockey League Network video department. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN: Paul’s Lunch, the 24-hour Uptown Restaurant, National Lunch and Royal Restaurant on Montreal Road, New Castle’s on Second Street East, the Chicken Palace and New York Cafe on Pitt Street, The Teen House on McConnell Avenue, the Wonderland Pavilion at Eamer’s Corners, Phillips Dairy Bar and the Bar-B-Q restaurant on old Highway 2 (now Vincent Massey Drive), the Torch Room and its smorgasbord, the Anchor Motel steak house with the huge lacrosse sticks near the entrance, the Mighty Midget on Second Street West. SPORTS STUFF: World Cup of Hockey is a great event that showcases the best of the best when it comes to hockey, but making it a pre-season event is akin to serving a sumptuous dessert made by a world-class chef before a Big Mac.

Well… “Summer has come and passed, the innocent can never last, wake me up when September ends.” – Billy Joe Armstrong (Green Day) September is always bittersweet for me, for many reasons, including the fact that it marks the end of, what has been traditionally, a wonderful couple of months of summertime! But on the same token, although I’ve not been in school for many, many years, September is always the marker for a new beginning, too – a fresh new start. You’ve got to love a fresh new start. Let’s talk about what to look forward to, in live music. Live, at the Jet Set Pub (Nav Centre), this month: Mena Hardy, Sept. 2; Mandy Woods, Sept. 3; JMB Acoustic Inc., Sept. 9; Tim and Brian, Sept. 10; Switchgrear, Sept. 14; Nick Seguin, Sept. 16; Joel Sauve, Sept. 17; Tommy Heatley, Sept. 20;

Jamie Jarvo, Karaoke, Sept. 22; Sean Harley, Sept. 23; Anne Newton, Sept. 24; Jason and Andre, Sept. 28 and Bruce Cicarrelli, Sept. 30. Most acts run from 7 – 11. Also live, this month, Stir it up, a tribute to Bob Marley, will be jammin’, at The Port Friday, September 16, and local husband and wife duo, Subtle, will be live at The Crooked Cashe, a new local venue, on September 22. Get out there and support live music, before there’s none left to support…They say that all good things come to an end, and sadly, that old proverb had proven itself so, with the recent announcement that Lola’s Pub can no longer support, regular live acts, in their establishment. Here’s an edited portion of the social media post regarding this, written by the venue’s booking manager. “I’ve been holding off making this post for a while, but here goes…. It’s with a heavy heart that I must inform you folks I have been asked to stop booking bands for Lola’s for the “time being.”

The owner is not seeing the turn out we did at the beginning, and it is becoming more difficult to justify paying out over a thousand dollars a month on live entertainment. You literally have a handful of opportunities left to show me, show the owner, show the musicians that you give a (expletive) about live entertainment, at Lola’s, and you want to see it thrive. I hope upon hope that together we can turn this ship around as I have thoroughly enjoyed booking at Lola’s for the past three years. If you see fit to share this post to spread the word, feel free. But what would really make a difference is showing up, supporting a local business that has given so much back to the community, and of course “clap you (expletive); you didn’t pay to get in!” Thanks for listening, and to borrow a line from Gord Downie: ‘It’s been a pleasure doing business with you’.” – Robin McRae. On behalf of all the local musicians and those who’ve come in, from out of town, to play Lola’s,

Bruce Cicarrelli will be live, at the Jet Set Pub, on September 30. thanks, and all the best to Robin and Sharon for providing a venue for us to share our passion and to the patrons who have come out to see us. Let’s not let this happen to the other places in town. I encourage you to get off your devices, get out, and enjoy some live music. Your soul depends on it!

A new flouride option a precedent from Germany where a high grade of fluoride compound is added to dietary salt and sold through retail outlets. Consumers have the choice to buy fluoridated and fluoride-free salt that they may use in the cooking and at meal times. To reintroduce municipal water fluoridation, Cornwall would have to spend some $500,000 at the municipal water plant in addition to $50,000 per year for fluoride

compound. The German option could cost less than $5,000 per year, if EOHU and area dentists were interested and willing to distribute fluoridated dietary salt to their customers who may be interested in applying that option in their homes. The commercial dietary salt industry offers consumers salt with iodine added to it, with iodine also being available in dietary supplement form as tablets made from sea kelp. It is inevitable

that the pro-fluoridation people would want to comment on a fluoride option that respects citizens freedom of choice. If the EOHU wants to oppose fluoridated dietary salt due to the sodium content, then how about the option of local dentists distributing fluoridated pepper to their patients?? Editor, Since Cornwall (and many other communities across Canada) discontinued municipal water fluoridation, proponents of fluoridation have actively sought ways to reintroduce municipal water fluoridation. HOWEVER, there is an option that could respect the freedom of choice for people who want fluoride and people who choose to remain free from fluoride. The option is based on

TD Tree Day plants edible forest CORNWALL, Ontario - Creating the areas first Edible Forest Garden is the goal of the 6th year the annual TD Tree Days. On Sunday Sept 18 volunteers gathered at the Gray’s Creek Conservation Area to plant 600 edible trees. In partnership with the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA), the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation wants help to green our community. Ultimately the public as well as local food banks will have access to harvest the nuts and fruits produced. Normand Genier, RRCA Forestry Specialist was on hand to explain the proper way to plant

the trees and shrubs and to answer any questions about them. Some of the varieties planted were High Bush Cranberry, Black Walnut, Wild Swamp Roses and White Oak. He said “All of these species (of plants) are edible.” As an example he later said, “The Wild Swamp Rose flowers are made into tea.” Jim McDonell, MPP Stormont Dundas South Glengarry, with shovel in hand helped Genier demonstrate the proper hole depth required for planting each tree. Organizer, Angie Parker a TD employee as well as contract employee for RRCA made sure all the volunteers received a free TD Tree Day t-shirt and gloves. She explained her involvement with

Kevin Koe inspects the ice

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Shorty Jenkin’s Classic wrapped up on Sunday night. The annual curling tournament saw its second year in Cornwall. The tournament began with the qualifiers on Thursday and the semi-finals and finals were covered live by CogecoTV and broadcast across the country. In the men’s semi-finals Team Edin, lead by Skip Niklas Edin of Karlstad, Sweden faced off against the winner of this year’s Tour Challenge, Canada’s Kevin Koe of Calgary. The other semi-final saw Team Epping lead by Skip John Epping of Toronto face Team Gushue. Team Gushue had to take to the ice without their Skip Brad Gushue who sustained

an injury two weeks ago. Brad Gushue lead his team to victory in last year’s Shorty Jenkins Classic. Mark Nichols of Newfoundland stepped up to serve as Skip in Brad’s absence. The result of the semi-finals saw Team Gushue face Team Koe for the championship at the Classic on Sunday. Ultimately Team Koe was victorious. Team Koe won by 9-3. In the Women’s Division, Team Homan leak by Skip Rachel Homan of Ottawa faced MarieFrance Larouche and her team from Levis, Quebec in the semi-finals. Skip Chrissy Cadorin of Toronto, Ontario faced Team Flaxey lead by Skip Allison Flaxey of Caledon, Ontario in the other semi-final. The results of those matches meant that the final was Team Homan versus Team Flaxey with Team Homan ultimately taking the final victory. Team Homan won the match 7-1.

Use a longer (flatter-faced) club than usual, and on shorter shots, avoid lifting the ball. You have to be able to make the ball stop quickly on the green. If it’s raining, wear comfortable, waterproof clothing that covers you entirely but breathes well. Also wear golf shoes with good traction, and regularly wipe them off to ensure you don’t slip during your drive. The always-appreciated golf umbrella, a couple of towels to dry off your face, and a couple extra pair of gloves make a great emergency kit. And while you’re at it, keep your club shafts dry and your ball free of dirt.

Despite the rain, wind or cold, a golf addict will play in any weather. Naturally, smart players will remember to dress accordingly because who wants to be overly affected by weather conditions? Unfortunately, however, the weather can affect your game. It can cause your muscles to tense up and it can also spoil the mood. Although it can be troublesome, wind should not be a deterrent to playing-regardless of whether it’s a crosswind, front wind or tailwind. A tailwind might even be a great ally for increasing the ball’s distance. When the wind is very strong and gusty, always keep the ball low.

Emergency test at Benson Centre simulated mass power outage Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If you are old enough to remember the great blackout of 2003, as most readers will be, then you remember the type of emergency that Cornwall’s Emergency Management department was trying to prepare for on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the Emergency Management department held a simulation at the Benson Centre, complete with volunteer

roleplayers to see how the City could cope with a large power outage and an influx of citizens seeking help. Cornwall’s Emergency Management and Community Safety Coordinator Bradely Nuttley explained that during an emergency where the City loses power for several days, citizens in need of aid would be directed to pre-determined reception centres like the Benson Centre. “Today’s excercise is about testing plans for those who can’t stay in their home during an emergency,” Nuttley said.

Cornwal Social Services and Housing were prepared to receive roleplayers as they came into the centre and St. John’s Ambulance was on-hand to respond to any simulated medical issues. Nuttley said that the centre was prepared to provide emergency food, lodgings, clothing and personal services. Personal services could cover anything from addressing mental health or social service issues to replacing lost perscription glasses. The scenario simulated on Wednesday was

the fourth day of a power outage covering Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec and Northern New York. “On the first day of a power outage like this, people still have food and other supplies,” Nuttley said. “By day four however, they are running out of food, the fridge is melting and the basement is beginning to flood.” The Benson Centre was even prepared to deal with pets as some of the roleplayers were asked to bring their dogs.

Happy 5th Birthday

From an 82-yr-old senior at 24 Augustus Street ... “Our street light has been off for 3 weeks. I called the City of Cornwall and was transferred on to six different people. The last one said he would see what he could do. This is a very large street light and lights from First St. to Water St. It’s right in front of 24 Augustus and now you can’t even see across the road and no one has done anything about it. I don’t know who else to call and hope that someone will read this and know what to do.”

www.st.pierrefueLs.ca Mary Berube would like to respond to Roger Sicotte’s article of Sept. 15th. “I would like to say that his criticism is not exactly accurate. I can’t comment on Second Street but Montreal Road is my adopted street. In the spring, I filled my bag four to five times. I find that people who live in that area are using the garbage cans more often, as I now find I fill my bag once or twice. That tells me people do care. If each of us does a little, we all benefit.”

It’s time to start thinking about car care for the winter season coming up. Check your car manual and switch to the lowest recommended winter oil grade for your model. Synthetic motor oil (though more expensive) can be used year round and resists cold-temperature sludge. Flu season: Don’t forget to cough into your sleeve, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap or hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, stay home!

When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied, “That would be fine with me.” Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye.

To the gentleman complaining that Adopt-AStreet program doesn’t work.... Maybe you should consider joining the program and do some of the clean up on Second St and Water St. yourself! For the program to work Sir, it needs volunteers! And yes in the neighbourhoods where people volunteer it does work! Pet Tip of the Week: Pets always need protection against disease and parasites, such as fleas and ticks. Your pet should be up to date with his vaccines at all times. You should also speak with your veterinarian about flea and tick medications to help prevent these parasites from infesting your pet.

Well look at this lovely photo of Joy Hudson (Mowatt) and her lovely children Lynn and Brad. Husband Dick must be taking the photo ...Happy 55 Wedding Anniversary.
