MAXVILLE, Ontario – The 2019 edition of Relay for Life is quickly approaching. This annual charity fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society allows them to run programs and services that support those going through some of the most difficult times of their lives.

Taking place on Friday, June 7 at the Maxville Fairgrounds, the Relay for Life is attended by hundreds, and raises tens of thousands of dollars. Last year’s event brought in $82,000.

“At Relay, we celebrate those who live and have lived in the face of cancer and those moving past cancer. With 1 in 2 Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, our goal is to improve the cancer experience by helping people live longer and enhancing their quality of life. We believe that when we really together, COMMUNITY is bigger than cancer,” said Allison St-Jean, Community Fundraising Specialist, Canadian Cancer Society SDG & Prescott Russell.

That money goes towards programs like the Relay for Life wig shop, located at the Care Centre in Cornwall, their Wheels of Hope program, which helps patients get to their many appointments, and the Maurice J. Grimes Lodge in Ottawa that gives cancer patients a place to stay while being treated. All of these services and programs have been used by Belinda McGillivary at some point in the past six years.

McGillivary was diagnosed with High Grade Stage 4 Ovarian cancer in 2013. She said that when she was diagnosed, she was already feeling unwell, and while she cried a little, was

She quickly entered treatment and began receiving chemo therapy.

This was also the first year that she participated in the Relay for Life.

“While still undergoing treatment I decided that I want to spread awareness about ovarian cancer and decided to join my friend with her Relay For Life team in 2013,” she said in a statement to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Over the past six years, Belinda McGillivary has gone into remission, and then relapsed on two occasions. She is now fighting stage 4 High Grade Progressive epithelial ovarian cancer.

“Just because you are diagnosed with stage 4 doesn’t mean it is the end,” she said. “As long as you’re fighting, there is still life to live.”

She encourages women to look for the signs of ovarian cancer, as it is often silent until stage 3 or 4. “Relay isn’t about cancer. It’s about people. People, like Belinda, who are living with the disease and moving past it. Belinda is a force of hope and is helping those facing cancer to see beyond their diagnosis. She is living proof that progress is being made against cancer,” St. Jean said.

Downtown intersection closed this week CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall has announced that it will be closing part of Second St. as of noon on Tuesday, May 27.

The street will be closed to Westbound traffic from Amelia St. to Sydney St. and will be closed from Eastbound traffic from Pitt St. to Sydney St. The street will be closed for about one week.

In the same area, Sydney St is closed from Second St. to Fourth St. for an undetermined amount of time as parts of the sewer system is replaced and upgraded.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The St. Lawrence College Nursing class of 1979 is planning their 40 year reunion for the first week of June.

The 1979 St. Lawrence College Nursing staff had 35 graduates. From June 2 to 5 they are being invited back to Cornwall to the Nav Centre to reunite, reminisce and celebrate.

On Sunday, June 2, the reunion will begin with a reception at St. Lawrence College starting at 5 p.m. along with cocktails and a BBQ at the Shark Tank lounge on campus.

The next morning, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the class of ’79 will be holding a cancer walk to raise funds for breast cancer research. They will be walking from the Nav Centre to St. Lawrence College and back. In the afternoon

from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. there will be a golf tournament at Summerheights Golf Links followed by a dinner.

June 4 will start with a sightseeing tour of Cornwall and the surrounding area. The bus will leave the Nav Centre at 10 a.m. and will stop at scenic locations such as Cornwall’s Cotton Mill District, Downtown Cornwall, Lamoureux Park, Rurban Brewing and the Lost Villages Museum in South Stormont, with additional locales still being explored.

That evening, there will be a farewell dinner and dance at the Nave Centre, followed by an informal lunch the next day at 11:30 a.m. at the Blue Anchor, an old hangout spot for the class of ’79.

Longtime hardware store owner Allan Snetsinger passes away Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Allan Snetsinger was a prominent member of Cornwall’s business and non-profit communities for many years. He passed away at Cornwall Community Hospital on Wednesday, May 15, surrounded by family.

He was 90-years-old.

Allan Snetsinger’s life long passion was running Snetsinger’s Hardware Store. Located on Pitt. St., Allan spent sixty years helping his customers repair treasures, and build for their future.

Allan was Chair of the Board of the Cornwall General Hospital, a former President and Founding Member of the Optimist Club. He was also past President of Cornwall Masonic Corinthian Lodge and member and past President of Karnac Shriners in 1993.

Rory MacLennan, another former President of the local Shriners remembered Allan as someone you could count on.

“He participated in a lot of Shrine events and he was always one of those guys you could count on to be there to help,” MacLennan said.

“His wife remembered he always loved going to Shrine meetings.”

A memorial service was held for Snetsinger on May 22 and he was interned at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery in Ingleside on Friday, May 24.

Memorial donations to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, Montreal are greatly appreciated by the family.

Cooper Marsh Spring Fling sees blossoming crowd Shawna O’Neill

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Cooper Marsh Conservation Area saw over 175 attendees at the annual Spring Fling fundraiser on Sunday, May 26, making for the event’s largest turnout to date.

“The word is out, people want to be here, want to support Cooper Marsh. It’s a nice event, nice food, nice wine — just a good combination,” said Mike Chegrinec, Vice Chair of Cooper Marsh Conservators.

Chegrinec explained that the Cooper Marsh Conservators hold a few annual fundraising events in support of initiatives pertaining to the Marsh and trails. He said that the Marsh has different government and business partnerships that continually show support, but a lot of support comes from members of the public. Tickets to the event were $30 and funds raised from silent auction items will be donated to the organization.

“We have put in quite a bit of time and money to update the infrastructure,” said Chegrinec. “Part of the ticket sales today go to refurbishing the Marsh…we have many initiatives going on all the time.”

In the last seven years, conservators have strived to update the Marsh, digging out frozen channels and refurbishing boardwalks to be wheelchair accessible according to Chegrinec.

“We have had many of our members and also our supporters who have donated pieces of art, other pieces of ceramic…we have a wide variety of items that are up for live auction here today. All of the funds will go to the projects

that we put on,” said conservator Elaine Kennedy, who donated a wall hanging she brought home from Zimbabwe.

“There’s a couple of pieces from local artists…we also have a local potter who has donated some of her work…and there’s other prints,” added Kennedy, who bid on a handcrafted birdhouse.

Kennedy explained that the conservators are working to replace all the windows inside the Visitor’s Centre with UV protected panes, and also replace the cabinets with only native

taxidermy and items that can be seen or found within the marsh. Chegrinec also said that soon families will have the opportunity to sponsor memorial benches and/or plaques along the trails.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Six rats found a new home this weekend as members of the public had the chance to drop by the OSPCA of SDG on Saturday, May 25 to tour the local facility and learn more about services offered.

“This is going to become an annual thing,” said Carol Link, Animal Centre Manager. “We’re not usually open on Sundays, so it’s an opportunity to give people tours. There have been some adoptions today, as well as people enjoying a BBQ. We have some auction items as well. It’s also an opportunity to talk to people.”

Link said that there was also a 50/50 draw available during the afternoon. She was happy to inform members of the public about the OSPCA yard sale coming up in June and the annual walkathon that takes place in September.

“We can’t do what we do without the support of the community… there’s a lot of things we do, other than just being an adoption centre, so it’s good to talk about those things,” said Link.

Kinsmen Farmers’ Market opening weekend CORNWALL, Ontario – The widely attended Kinsmen Farmers’ Market opened again on Sunday, May 26 for its third year of business.

“We are really proud to present the Market this year. It has grown every year. I was surprised, I thought last year was a big improvement, but we’ve grown even more from last year to this year,” said Market Chairman and Kinsmen Club member Monte Yancey.

Yancey was very happy with the morning turnout considering it was the first day. A flood of even more attendees filled the St. Lawrence College parking lot around noon.

Walking through the Market revealed several locally sourced food options, including fresh produce, jams, wines, jarred pickled goods, meats, soups, desserts and coffee. Vendors also displayed items like soap, jewellery, hand crafted

signs and more. Other gardening businesses were also present, and attendees could indulge in a plethora of lunch menu options.

“We have nearly 30 vendors here already. It’s just amazing,” said Yancey.

New additions from last year include a vendor with Ketogenic Diet food and new lunchtime vendors thus far.

“I’m Chair but that doesn’t mean much. It’s really the volunteers that have come through…” said Yancey, who especially thanked his Market Manager. “I’m proud of all the volunteer efforts that make it possible.”

“If anyone is coming down for the first time, make sure you find me. I would be happy to show you around and introduce you to some of the vendors,” added Yancey.

The Market will be open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Lawrence College until Sunday, Oct. 27, which will be a special Halloween themed day.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The fifth annual Wing it for Kids Sake in support of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall saw a big turnout.

There were 330 people who came out to the Knights of Columbus hall on Friday, May 24 to try some wings and nine different wing sauces to decide who’s the wing sauce champ.

Wing sauces were submitted by the Jet Set Pub, O’Neill’s Pub, Schnitzels, Shoeless Joes, Sticks, Maggie’s, Esca, Sheep’s Head and last

year’s sauce champ, the Smoking Bull.

There was more to enjoy beyond the wings, the sauces and the good company. There was also a silent auction and live entertainment provided by the band Twisted Kilt.

Ron Graham, Executive Director of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall said he hoped the event surpassed last year’s fundraising total of $5,000. Money raised at the event will go towards the organization’s one-on-one mentoring program. Graham said he also hoped to recruit more Bigs into the program that evening.

“I want people to go on our Facebook page and see our stories about bigs and littles in the past. These are true stories from our community,” he said. “It is only a couple of hours a week and you are never too old to be involved.”

Graham, a Little and a Big Brother himself said that being a Big was a life changing experience for him.

“I enjoyed just being able to be there and help someone who needed it,” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario – In a media release, the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) announced that they are currently experiencing a shortage of doctors in their Emergency Department.

“The Emergency Department has recently experienced retirements coupled with an unexpected leave leading to our temporary shortage,” CCH states in a media release. “We have several new recruits starting July 1st including 2 from the “Adopt a Medical Resident.””

The Adopt a Medical Resident program is a partnership between the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) and Queen’s University to bring two medical residents to Cornwall per year to work in the Emergency Department.

CCH states that they are currently concentrating their staffing in the Emergency Room around the peak hours of the morning and afternoon.

“It may benefit the community to understand that less urgent conditions will be more efficiently seen during morning and early afternoon hours,” the CCH media release statess. “In fact, during the day we have up to four doctors on duty. We want everyone to know that we always strive to provide the best care possible in a timely way. If your condition is less severe, the wait time will likely be better during the day when we have higher staffing levels.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall just introduced a new plan to make finding Cornwall Transit buses a little easier.

On Monday, May 27, Cornwall Transit in partnership with Consat Canada Inc. unveiled a new digital service that tracks buses in real-time and can update users on any delays or cancellations.

“The Transit Master Plan gave us a view of what people wanted and we’ve seen that people want more control and with Consat we are doing just that. We are giving people more control and more information about when to catch the bus and where,” said Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement.

The new service can be found at waytogo. cornwall.ca and allows users to track their bus via

the route name, or stop number. Users can also see on a map the whole course of a bus route and the buses distance to the next stop.

“People asked us about real time maps and we tried hard to get it done and with the help of Consat it is becoming a reality,” said Len Tapp, Division Manager for Cornwall Transit. “I thought this was 10 to 15 years down the road and now, the future is here.”

The system cost roughly $160,000 with annual fees of $8,000 to Consat for hosting the web service and another $5,000 to $6,000 for 24/7 support.

Tapp said that he believed that this service will greatly reduce the number of complaints Cornwall Transit gets about late or cancelled buses and will help them plan routes more efficiently going into the future.

CORNWALL, Ontario - With our forks down and our bellies full of gravy and fries, the judges of Taste Tour Poutine Edition have finally selected a winner for this year’s competition.

With nine mouthwatering dishes in the Poutine Tour, the final decision was not unanimous or easy to make. Each poutine was judged on four categories: creativity, presentation, taste and execution. The judges were searching for a tasty dish that looked delicious and met high expectations, exemplifying a creative and cohesive mix of flavours.

The Judge’s Choice Award for Best Poutine of 2019 is awarded to Sheep’s Head Bistro for The Kitchen Sink Poutine. This dish took an East Coast inspiration, consisting of fries, curds and gravy topped with stuffing & haddock nuggets.

In a close second place was Schnitzels Duck Duck Crunch, a signature wood oven thin crust pizza topped with grainy mustard gravy, mozzarella and St. Alberts cheese curds, pulled duck confit, green onions and finished with herbed oil and crunchy potato kettle chips.

Judges Jason McNamara, Ally St-Jean, Michelle Allinotte and myself (Shawna O’Neill) embarked on our judging endeavor on Friday, May 24, and we were happy to indulge in all of the creative dishes offered. The expansive realm of ideas and tastes showcased the true professionalism and artistry of local chefs, making us humbled and appreciative of what culinary cre-

ations are offered in Cornwall, SDG&A. Members of the community who were actively participating in the tour who posted on social media did not go unnoticed! Considering the dishes with the most votes from the public, the People’s Choice Award for Best Poutine of 2019 is awarded to Lancaster Pizzeria’s Poutzzine, a plate of pizza dough, mozzarella cheese, curds, fries and gravy.

Second place in the public’s eye was Melted Mayhem’s Smoked Pulled Pork Poutine. The dish held St. Alberts cheese curds, smoked sea salted fries, gravy, smoked pulled pork, homemade coleslaw, topped with smoked BBQ sauce. This is the first time Melted Mayhem has participated in a Taste Tour event!

A step forward on the waterfront In two weeks, the current Cornwall City Council will have been inpower for six months.

In six months council has addressed a few campaign issues.

Switching to a ward system was looked at for a hot minute early on then quickly dropped. A cannabis by-law is in the process of working its way through to completion, but the most prominent issue from the election campaign still looms large, namely the waterfront.

There have been a few open houses about the waterfront, a presentation or two, but no reports or by-laws have yet to pass that change anything about the City’s approach to the waterfront, that is, until tonight.

Monday night, Council considered a motion from freshman councillor Todd Bennett. Bennett’s motion asked administration for a report on the feasibility of having temporary pop-up shops along the waterfront.

This is an idea that’s being imported from the City of Belleville, who introduced the idea in January of having temporary pop-up shops along their waterfront this summer.

I think this is a great idea. This will give people a chance to see what our waterfront could be if it had a permanent, or seasonal boardwalk. It gives eager entrepreneurs a chance to grow their businesses in our city, and the best part of all, is that it could be temporary, which would mean that if we don’t like this change to our waterfront, then it would be easy to change back.

That being said, there are of course, going to be a few caveats to where these pop-ups should be. For starters, the City does not own most of the waterfront. The bulk of the waterfront lands are in the hands

of the federal government, who claim they intend to divest the land to whoever offers fair market value.

Also, the market cannot displace the ball diamonds in Legion Park. I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but those ball diamonds were very busy all last week.

What might work is having these pop-up shops just

west of Marina 200 along the perimeter of the Civic Complex’s eastern parking lot.

Benjamin Fielding was born on January 20th, 1878 in Southport, Lancashire, England.

He was the son of Benjamin Fielding Senior, and Sarah Chadwick II. Newspaper clippings

from the late 1890s report that Benjamin sang (to a piano accompaniment) at numerous functions in and around Southport and Liverpool, including once at the New Brighton Tower.

Benjamin was considered to have had “a fine baritone voice.”

Canadian Passenger lists detail that Benjamin arrived in Montreal from Liverpool, England, on September 17, 1905. He was 27 years old when he arrived in Canada, he was unmarried, and he had been educated as a

Bank Clerk. When asked where he intended to live in Canada, he had told the teller “Toronto” was his desired destination. Despite that, five years later, Benjamin would find himself staying in Cornwall’s Rossmore Hotel.

Benjamin Fielding was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. His grave was marked with a proud tombstone that reads: “In loving memory of Ben Fielding who lost his life in the Rossmore Hotel fire, Cornwall April 29, 1910, younger son of late Benjamin Fielding, Birkdale, England.

Aged 32.” The tombstone cost twenty-five dollars, and the bill was paid by Mr. T.E. Fletcher, on November 10, 1910.

Everything Benjamin Fielding owned was lost in the hotel fire that took his life. The only possession that survived was a box of ivory chessmen that Benjamin kept at his club. The chess pieces were shipped back to England (to his brother JAC Fielding), and they remain in the Fielding family to this day.

arrival of spring.

Our federal government, in its quest for votes, has decreed that marijuana use is just fine.

Now that it’s been legalized, February 30 could be designated as Pot Day, or We’d Day. Parents, the medical professions and the various organizations spent decades trying to convince us that smoking is bad. Justification: it will be good for the economy. Our federal, provincial and municipal governments are hooked on the revenues of the ‘sin taxes’ associated with tobacco, alcohol and now, pot.

We treat some public holidays in the same way as unexpected income tax refunds: we haven’t got a clue how they got to us, but we celebrate their arrival anyway.

Here are some of my thoughts about our public holidays. The way we observe some of them needs to be renewed, reformed or renamed. Others need to be radically changed and some others should be abolished, replaced by new ones.

Let’s start with Civic Holiday, the first Monday

of August. According to some meticulous scientific surveys I made at our eleven Cornwall Tim Horton’s, 98.6% of the patrons queried admitted to having no idea of its significance. Therefore, I propose that we breathe some new life into it by getting Cornwall Honda, the local dealer involved. After all, they’re the ones who sell the Civic. On New Civic Day, the city’s buses, garbage trucks, police cars and taxis would be replaced by a fleet of Honda Civics.

The Coffee Club Intelligentsia seems to have little enthusiasm for Victoria Day either.

However, I sure got their attention when I suggested it could be renamed Victoria Secret’s Day. Throngs of cheering men would be lining the parade route, cameras in hand.

In an era when the boys of summer who were trusted with minding the mounds in city and area sandlot fastball circuits, where some of the best played the game, a farm kid from Newington established himself as one of the best of the best.

Neil Gallinger, who passed away last week, came to Cornwall to work at “The Mill” and pitch for the Papermen, first in the Industrial Softball League then the elite North End Fastball League which entertained crowds at venerable King George Park.

Oh, could he throw a ball. He opened the 1966 season with a no-hitter. He had another in 1967. And in 1970 he kicked off the season with a 16 strike-out no hitter. Later, in the mid70s, he took a couple of seasons off but made a comeback and in 1980 authored a perfect game during a tournament encounter.

Gallinger honed his mound skills as a teen whipping a scuffed softball against the side of the barn for hours on end.

In his prime, Gallinger was the quintessential workhorse, sometimes pitching two or three games the same day in tournaments, which came about every summer weekend.

“Go home, take a couple of pain killers and go back for another (tournament) game,” he said during his Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame induction. The South Stormont Hall also inducted Gallinger.

He told about sitting down with a catcher before one season to talk about signals. The catcher made it simple. “You just throw ‘em and I’ll catch ‘em.”

And throw ‘em, he did.

************* Cornwall fire fighters found themselves in a challenging juggling act on May 28, 1967, fighting three fires in different parts of the city at the same time with a shortage of manpower.

Fire fighters were dealing with a stubborn fire at the public works yard at Sixth and Adolphus streets when a blaze broke out in a two-storey, four-unit apartment building at Seventh and Bedford streets. Only a truck and three fire fighters held back at the main station answered the call. Short time later they were joined by another three men and a truck from the east Cornwall station. Only five off-duty firefighters could be contacted to help out.

Meanwhile, the apartment building fire threatened nearby homes. Fire chief Lucien Carriere arrived on the scene from his cottage in Lancaster to take command but he was forced to grab three men and a truck away from the scene to deal with a raging grass fire that threatened Hodgin’s Lumber and two large fuel tanks.

The apartment building was destroyed and four families who lost everything found themselves homeless.

The fire chief said that if foam used to fight fires had not been taken out of the budget to save $1,000 the apartment fire would have been much easier to fight. He said it was the work of his men and luck that saved the entire block.

Rachel’s Kids Celebrate 15th Anniversary Message from the Founder and Chair

I am honoured to take this opportunity to present our annual report to every one of you.

There is an old saying and we Dr. rachel all know it well. It takes a village to raise a child. navaneelan That is the philosophy of Rachel’s Kids. It is about this community coming together, those who are concerned and care about, and are committed to the children of our community. It is about making life a little better to that child who is battling a life threatening or terminal illness.

As we enter 2019, we reflect on the great work we were able to accomplish in 2018. Through our Small Moments of Joy, Helping Hands, House of Hope and Foster Program, we were able to support so many families and children of our community. We’ve seen an increase in demand of our resource centre for families searching for support for their newly diagnosed children. There’s been a rise in inquiry for our Super Kids Summer Camp and a spike in families dropping in to work in our sensory room. This all proves that our reach is growing.

While we have enjoyed watching the success and growth of Rachel’s Kids, we’re reminded of how important our work becomes when a family is struck with loss. It’s been a tough year for us as we had to say goodbye to a few special littles that lost their difficult fight with illness. This continues to feed our fire to work harder, fundraise more and continue to spread awareness so we can reach as many families as possible.

As you read through our update for 2018, we hope our work inspires you to consider supporting or continue supporting our worthy cause. There is a need that must be filled and it starts with you.

Message from the Executive Director For years, the idea of having a career where I help people has always been a dream come true for me, especially when children are involved. Knowing I can play an intricate role in helping a child become stronger, healthier and of course happier is a passion that holds a special place in my heart.

As the Executive Director for Rachel’s Kids, I’ve been blessed to work with some amazing people in my community, in my network and of course my staff and volunteers. As a united front we have made a difference in so many lives in SD&G. The outpouring support is significantly reflected in our stories and legacy and I couldn’t feel more grateful and humbled by how much our community gives.

With all of the good we have done, nothing ever prepares us for loss and sadly, 2018 has been an emotional year for us.

Alaya, Abby and Lily were three very special recipients of our Helping Hands and Small Moments of Joy initiatives over the course of the last few years. Unfortunately, all three have tragically lost their battle to cancer in 2018.

They will forever hold a special place in my heart. Their

courage and their will to fight have taught me and this community some valuable lessons. Every time I would look into each of their eyes I could see the bravery, strength and amazing outlook kim they had on this world. lauzon They have inspired me to always look at the positive in life!

I am sad that their lives were cut so short but in retrospect I am happy to have been a part of their journey. I am reminded why I continue to work here, why we continue to raise funds, why we continue to build partnerships with our community and why we continue to help families.

I hope that 2019 will not only show growth and prosperity for Rachel’s Kids, but will add more incredible chapters to our book.

This initiative will continue to flourish in the upcoming years and we are proud to say that 100% of the proceeds will be reinvested in Autism Awareness Community Projects.

Small Moments of Joy 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of Rachel’s Kids and it continues to evolve with the ever-changing landscapes of philanthropy by writing a new chapter into its foundation via “Small Moments of Joy” – an initiative created in 2014. Small Moments of Joy is a program focused on local children battling life threatening or chronic illness. The program grants wishes for these children – with the goal of allowing them to forget their illness or upcoming / ongoing treatments or surgeries, and for a moment or two focus on a moment of joy. Our goal is to aid in the recovery process by providing a positive and happy experience for the child and his or her family, but with a focus on the young person. Harboured in this program is the belief that positivity aids in the recovery and healing process. Rachel’s Kids first Small Moment was the purchase of a pool for a local boy, Joel Fast, who is living with developmental delays as a result of cancer treatments. Since then, we’ve helped spread some joy to well over 60 kids in SD&G and surrounding area.

The Lapierre family are our most recent recipients of Small Moments of Joy. Alexandre (5) and Leo (3) are brothers who suffer from a condition called Primary Immunodeficiency (PI).

There are over 300 genetic defects and disorders of the immune system that can be recognized as a primary immunodeficiency disorder. Alex and Leo’s case is still a mystery as doctors are still trying to determine the type and cause of their disorder.

Despite their illness they are typical boys

Helping Hands enjoying typical boy things. They love the outdoors, the beach, to play with cars and trucks. They have a great sense of humour and are living a very full and fun life. This family was extremely excited to learn that they were selected to be recipients of our Small Moments initiative and Rachel’s Kids will be sending the boys and their parents on a 7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise this fall. The boys have been asking to go on a cruise ever since they saw Hotel Transylvania 3. Their wish will now come true thanks to our amazing community and their generosity.

In 2014, Rachel’s Kids launched the Helping Hands Program – an off shoot of Small Moments of Joy. There were many cases applying to Small Moments of very young children suffering from serious illness but, being so little, they couldn’t communicate their interests or the things they wished for with Small Moments of Joy. So, a new program branched out in order to better help our tiny little locals and their families through Helping Hands. We were quick to realize that the stress, travel and time to take these young children to treatment was placing huge financial burdens on young families. In developing Helping Hands, we felt that we could assist with specific situations such as these and through this program we wanted to contribute by giving out gas cards, food cards, prepaid phone cards to better help these families cope with basic living expenses while their children were undergoing treatment. (The children all got a little something too).

This year, we were blessed with meeting this beautiful local family and were able to contribute through our Helping Hands program during this family’s very difficult time. All thanks to our generous community donors of course.

Since October of 2018, Jesce has not been well.

After several visits to emergency, then CHEO and more tests then a 6-year-old boy should ever have to endure, they have found a large mass and diagnosed him with a rare form of cancer which compromises the ability to move his left leg.

After learning Robyn (Jesce’s Mom) needed some help, we were happy to provide her gas cards

and grocery cards through our Helping Hands initiative, allowing the family to focus on Jesce’s health and not so much on the day to day travelling expenses. The family has had to spend a significant amount of time in Boston at a hospital who can offer specialized treatment for Jesce’s cancer. During their stay in Boston, Jesce’s family ensured that they would take advantage of the time spent together visiting some of his favourite places to help with his recovery. Wishing health and strength for this family.

We are very excited to have built some amazing memories with our Super Kids Campers!

Super Kids Summer Camp is designed for our friends with special needs and Rachel’s Kids is the only centre in SD&G that offers a summer camp geared to friends with disabilities. Our camp runs from 2 weeks to 8 weeks and we partner up with our local agencies to assist with funding for families to afford camp costs.

Our summers are packed with fun structured activities and adventures.

We look forward to seeing these smiling faces again.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Dave Murphy and Dave MacLean will be going head-to-head this Saturday night in support of local charities.

The two Daves will be the celebrity fight headlining a card of amateur boxers, all of whom will be Boxing for Change in support of the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC).

“I got involved in this event when David Murphy challenged me to take him on in the Celebrity fight for which he is the reigning champ. We we both at the Crafting a Cure fundraiser event last November when the challenge was made….and of course I accepted,” said Dave MacLean. “Since then I have been training at Champs Eastside Boxing Club under the careful watch of Jorge Luis. I attend several days a week plus do some my own work at home. I have no previous boxing experience, what I know now is what I’ve learned over the past several months.”

Admission tickets are $20 and the majority of that profit will be going to support the CTC, but a portion will also be going to support Champs Eastside Boxing.

There will also be two raffles happening that night, one in support of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall and the other in support of Beyond 21.

Murphy explained that Boxing for Change is a fun way to support these local causes.

“The CTC has taken this event to new heights since taking it over from Agape Centre a few years ago,” he said. “The guest speakers list is always impressive but even more so this year with four all-time great boxing legends. The CTC is a very worthy cause. Combined with money being raised for Champs Boxing Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Beyond 21, this event raises a lot of much needed funds and awareness to these great causes.”

Jane MacLaren of Beyond 21 is thrilled to be a beneficiary of this charity event.

“Beyond 21 is thrilled to be a part of Boxing for Change. OTTAWA, Ontario – The Ottawa Senators announced on Thursday, May 23 that they had named D.J. Smith as their new permanent head coach. He replaces Cornwall local Marc Crawford, who had served as interim-head coach since March.

Crawford had replaced Guy Boucher who was fired by the Senators on March 1.

Smith will become the 14th head coach in the franchise’s history. He has spent the past four seasons working as assistant head coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs under Mike Babcock. Prior to that, Smith had been the head coach of the OHL’s Oshawa Generals for three seasons and lead them to a championship in 2015.

Cornwall dit “bonjour my friend” CORNWALL (Ontario) – Les écoles françaises de Cornwall ont découvert la dualité linguistique du Canada le mardi 21 mai. La tournée Bonjour my Friend s’est arrêtée à Cornwall pour visiter les écoles secondaires La Citadelle et L’Héritage.

La tournée fait la promotion du concept de la dualité linguistique au Canada et a été présentée aux étudiants par l’ambassadrice Laura Lussier et l’ambassadeur Shaunpal Janju.

«La dualité linguistique nous conduit à la diversité qui nous définit aujourd’hui», a déclaré Lussier.

Lussier et Janju ont diffusé leur message à travers le pays. Ils ont commencé à Victoria, CB, le 15 avril et poursuivront leur tournée vers l’est.

Une partie de cette tournée est la commémoration de la Loi sur les langues officielles, adoptée en 1969.

«Nous pouvons penser à la façon dont le Canada a changé en un mot, le bilinguisme», a dit Janju. «Dans notre histoire, le bilinguisme signifiait la capacité de parler français et anglais, mais maintenant, cette définition correspond mieux à

la dualité linguistique.»

Ils ont expliqué que la dualité linguistique ne représente pas un obstacle au Canada.

«Le Canada n’est peut-être pas un pays, mais un débat éternel», a déclaré Lussier, qui a expliqué comment ce débat peut définir notre pays.

Lussier et Janju ont demandé aux élèves de La Citadelle ce qu’ils aimaient ou n’aimaient pas dans leurs cours de français.

Un étudiant a déclaré que s’ils connaissaient déjà le français, les cours de français étaient ennuyeux. Un autre a accepté de dire qu’ils souhaitaient mieux connaître la culture française et parler français que travailler sur la grammaire.

La tournée Bonjour my Friend a été présentée à Cornwall par l’Association des communautés francophones d’Ontario (ACFO) – SDG. «L’ACFO-SDG est fière de recevoir les ambassadeurs de La Tournée, Bonjour my Friend,» dit Dianne Poirier d’ACFO-SDG. «Une réflexion sur les 50 ans de la loi sur les langues officielles a été amorcée par les ambassadeurs Laura Lussier et Shaunpal Janju. Cornwall est un exemple d’une communauté ouverte, où on trouve la dualité linguistique. Il faut continuer à valoriser cet atout.»

Chaque année au printemps, l’école Rose des Vents, participe au Grand défi Pierre Lavoie. Ce défi a pour but de promouvoir la santé physique des jeunes et moins jeunes. Notre éducateur physique, M. Stéphane Paradis, croit en ce défi qui incite les jeunes à bouger mais qui peut aussi rayonner sur les membres de leur famille.

Le but de ce défi est de bouger le plus possible à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur. En effet, chaque 15 minutes d’activité physique équivaut à un cube. Les enfants comptent donc le nombre de minutes d’activité physique par semaine et inscrivent le nombre de cubes accumulés dans un tableau de données.

On peut courir, sauter, marcher, jouer au soccer… toutes les activités physiques comptent.

Le fondateur de ce défi est Pierre Lavoie. Pierre Lavoie est né le 17 décembre 1963 dans le magnifique village de l’Anse-Saint-Jean. Il habite au Saguenay−Lac-SaintJean et s’entraîne au moins une heure tous les jours. L’Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital installe un nouvel appareil de radiographie composantes électriques et un système de lumière à gradation.

La principale technologue en radiation médicale de l’HGMH, Jessica Duperron, qui procède à la formation du personnel sur le nouvel équipement, un appareil Ysio Max de Siemens, se dit très heureuse de la nouvelle gamme d’imagerie diagnostique. En plus des images de plus grande qualité, l’ajout de deux détecteurs portables permet de diminuer les doses de radiation et de prendre numériquement des images même lorsque le patient est confiné à un fauteuil roulant ou une civière. Grâce à l’automatisation, l’appareil peut aussi prendre des positions précises en poussant sur un bouton. En plus d’être plus facile pour les patients, le personnel est également avantagé puisqu’il n’a plus à toujours repositionner manuellement l’appareil de radiographie comme il devait le faire auparavant.

La campagne de financement de l’équipement s’est terminée plus tôt que prévu grâce à un coup de pouce sous forme d’un don anonyme de 100 000 $. La Fondation s’est servie du don pour lancer une campagne de « donation jumelée » à l’été 2017, laquelle a permis de recueillir 150 000 $ supplémentaires, incluant un cadeau du Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group (25 000 $) et de l’Auxiliaire de l’Hôpital (50 000 $).

Le Jubilé annuel de l’hôpital et les efforts de donneurs individuels et groupes communautaires ont aussi grandement contribué au succès de la campagne. « Le fait que nous avons recueilli cet argent sur une période de deux années et demie quand nous pensions que cela en aurait pris cinq, témoigne de la générosité de la communauté », dit Pierre Vaillancourt, président de la Fondation de l’HGMH. Michael Cohen, P-DG de l’HGMH, dit que cet équipement neuf et modernisé exemplifie l’engagement continu de l’HGMH face à l’amélioration des soins aux patients. « Le nouvel appareil de rayon-X constitue des améliorations concrètes à la qualité et la sécurité de nos diagnostiques grâce à la technologie améliorée », dit M. Cohen. Il ajoute que l’effort global allant de la campagne de financement jusqu’à l’implantation illustre tout ce qui est possible lorsque l’ensemble de la communauté y met du sien. « Mes sincères remerciements à notre Fondation, ainsi que Louise Quenneville, chef de projet, notre personnel d’imagerie diagnostique, ainsi que notre communauté pour faire de ce rêve une réalité », dit Corey Kalsi, Président du conseil d’administration de l’hopital. « Nous sommes très fiers de notre partenariat avec la Fondation et nous savons que ce nouvel ajout à notre hôpital servira notre communauté pour les années à venir. »

CORNWALL, Ontario – Members of the Catholic Diocese of Alexandria-Ottawa, students, representatives of the school board and local politicians came out to celebrate and bless the new Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School.

Located at the old General Vanier school site next to St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Sacred Heart students are wrapping up their first year in a new building.

“The new Sacred Heart, with the extension of the 7/8 wing to St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School provides students with a smooth transition, familiarity and a strong sense of Catholic community,” said St. Joe’s Principal Renee Rozon during the opening of the ceremony. “A unique experience where students exter our building in

Kindergarten and graduate in Grade 12 from the same building.”

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) acquired the new building from the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) in a trade last spring and remodeled the building to house Sacred Heart, and students from St. Columban’s Catholic School, which closed at the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

“This is Catholic Education at its best,” said CDSBEO Board Chair Todd Lalonde. “Don’t listen to the naysayers, we see here today a centre of excellence. Without our co-terminus board, they wouldn’t have the facilities they require and we wouldn’t have the facilities we require.”

A blessing ceremony was conducted by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast who reminded the students gathered in Sacred Heart’s

gymnasium that faith and education can go hand-in-hand.

“Sometimes we feel that faith and science are incompatible, they are not,” the Archbishop said.

The ceremony included students and priests traveling throughout the building to bless all of the school’s facilities and the unveiling of a plaque that will be hung in the hallway to commemorate the occasion.

Sacred Heart has over 350 registered students. The junior kindergarten to grade six school consists of 23 teachers and multiple support staff, including teaching assistants and early childhood educators.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The smell of grilled goods wafted through the air at the TR Leger Summer Southern BBQ on Wednesday, May 22, hosted by students of the Hospitality and Tourism Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program.

“Matt Drouin from BBQwithdrew and Chef Travis Dunning came in and they worked with our kids and helped them prepare the ribs. They showed them how to pull the membrane off, season them properly, so we had about 32 racks

hands-on experiential learning for (them),” he said.

Students can choose to pursue the Hospitality and Tourism SHSM as early as a Grade 11 and graduate with a red seal on their diploma which is indicative of their advanced experience in the field.

Chef Mat Drouin, who created a course called Better BBQ: Pork 101, was happy to help students. He thought it was an awesome opportunity to utilize a Traeger Grill and is looking forward to getting involved with educational facilities in the future.

“We came in yesterday and prepped all the

food… it was pretty cool to see them get very engaged. It’s an awesome opportunity to show off what wood fire food tastes like to a crowd,” said Drouin.

Carter-Edwards thanked community partners from Laurencrest Youth Services and CPS, Cornwall Tourism, local media and other board members for attending.

“I’m so proud to be the administrator here.

The kids are doing great…we have the opportunity here for kids to shine, no matter where they come from or what they’ve been through and we provide all the same experiences that mainstream education does and more,” he said.

A 71-year-old man named David is having a drink in a bar. Suddenly a gorgeous girl enters and sits down a few seats away. The girl is so attractive that he just can’t take his eyes off her.

The Cornwall Lunker Club is hosting its annual Walleye Classic on Saturday, June 1. Registration will be held at the RCAFA Wing 424 in Lamoureux Park on the Wednesday evening before the event or on the morning of the derby at the boat launch behind the RCAFA Wing 424 building in Lamoureux Park. Cost is $70 per boat (teams of 2), with placement based on the combined weight of 3 walleye.

The event runs from 7 am to 3 pm followed by prizes and a BBQ at the RCAFA building.

When people ask why we raise the Pride Flag and why there are Pride celebrations, look at the United States. This past week, the President of the United States signed an Executive Order making it harder for trans persons to access medical care. In April, he already banned transgender people from the military. Gay marriage became legal in the U.S. in this decade. This is not something in the distant past, this is happening now, of our time, and awareness should be raised lest we fall back to a time when innocent people were persecuted.

CORNWALL, Ontario – One 25-year-old man is in custody after a stabbing took place on Louisa St. on Thursday, May 23.

Stephanie MacRae of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS) states that officers received a call about a weapons complaint at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday. Upon arriving at the Louisa St. address, police found that the 25-year-old suspect had attacked a man known to him with an edged weapon.

The victim was sent to hospital with serious injuries, and the suspect was taken into custody.

MacRae stated to Seaway News that the investigation is in its early stages and that more information about the arrest will be released as the investigation moves forward.

Cornwall man charged with sexual assault of family member

CORNWALL, Ontario – A 25-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 23, 2019 and charged with the following: Sexual assault on a person under 16 Sexual interference Invitation to sexual touching Sexual exploitation It is alleged between 2010 and 2012, when the man was approximately 15 to 16 years of age, he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old family member. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On May 23, 2019 the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court at a later date. His name was not released as the man was a youth at the time of the incident and is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Robbery with violence

CORNWALL, Ontario - A 23-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on May 27, 2019 and charged with robbery with violence and criminal harassment. It is alleged the man had been repeatedly watching his ex-common-law wife, and further entered her residence where a struggle ensued and he took her phone without permission.

Police were contacted and took the man into custody. He was charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing. His name was not released as it would identify the victim in the matter.

Mail boxes set on fire in South Glengarry

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – During the morning of Friday, May 24 at approximately 7:24 a.m., SDG OPP officers responded to a report of multiple mail boxes being damaged and burnt on Concession Rd. 8 and 2nd Line Rd. in South Glengarry Township.

Investigation revealed that unknown culprits caused damage to several mail boxes in the area at some point overnight between May 23 and 24.

An investigation continues.
