City commemorates Cornwall Electric sale CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall remembered the sale of Cornwall Electric on the 21st anniversary of the transaction. In 1998, Cornwall Electric was sold by the City of

Cornwall to Consumer Gas. The history of the utility goes back more than 100 years, and the City of Cornwall decided to originally buy it back in 1977 for $4.8 million. Ten years later, Cornwall Electric acquired St. Lawrence Power for $13.8 million. “We typically termed Cornwall Electric as the crown jewel of Cornwall’s assets,”

Ron Bergeron explained to Council during a presentation. He went on to say that the decision to sell this “crown jewel” came because the timing was right. “We hit the sweet spot in terms of value and timing,” he said.

CORNWALL & SDG, Ontario - The 28th edition of Apples & Arts is taking place this weekend across Cornwall and SD&G. Happening on both Saturday and Sunday, there will be dozens of artists participating at more than 30 locations. Most locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

“The goal of the tour is to give the residents and visitors of Cornwall and area an opportunity to enjoy art in the spaces where

it is actually created. It is a chance to meet the artists, to chat, to see their work in a natural setting and enjoy the wellness of visual beauty and friendly company,” reads a statement on the Apples & Arts website.

“You will discover all types of artists who work with paint, ink, clay, fine stones, wood and glass to create original pieces of art.”

The tour is organized by Your Arts Council, Cornwall & the Counties and partnering artists.

Artist Laura Stevens will be at Humble Beginnings in Ingleside, Marilyn Grignon will

be at Marlin Orchards, and Helen James and Suzanne Rowlands will be at the future Cornwall Art Centre at 159 Pitt St. in Cornwall, along with many more artists across many more locations.

City commemorates Cornwall Electric sale The transaction was delayed however due to the great Ice Storm of 1998.

The sale was supposed to go through on Feb. 1, 1998, but the Ice Storm damaged some of the infrastructure, delaying the closure of the sale.

The City got busy replacing much of the damaged power lines, transformers and towers. “All infrastructure was replaced by the time the deal went through.

In some ways, it was a new company,” said Bergeron. Dick Aubry, who was Alderman when Cornwall Electric was bought by the City, and Mayor when it was sold, said that the sale of Cornwall Electric had a great impact on Cornwall. “It is one of the best things that ever happened to this city and had one of the biggest impacts on the city,” he said.

The utility was sold for $68 million in 1998.

That money was used to clear municipal debts and to create the Progress Fund.

Since its creation, the Progress Fund has generated $20.5 million in interest, and has been used to support projects throughout the city.

Cornwall CAO Maureen Adams listed some of the projects that were supported by the Progress Fund including the new Cornwall Community Hospital, the River Institute, the Agape Centre, the Aquatic Centre, the Boys and Girls Club, Hospice Cornwall and more. “I’m not sure there would still be a Hospice without the City’s contribution,” Adams said.

The sale helped ensure as well that the ratepayers in Cornwall received lower power rates than Hydro One customers.

Feathers ruffled over urban chickens in South Stormont

LONG SAULT, Ontario – The allowance of urban chickens or backyard hens was a hot topic of discussion during the South Stormont Public Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18, where approx.

100 community members attended to discuss local zoning by-law concerns.

“Urban chickens or backyard hens are becoming popular among those who want to keep them for pets, therapy purposes, eggs, etc. The keeping of livestock in any residential zone is currently prohibited in the zoning by-law – this includes chickens. (The) Township has received many requests each year to consider allowing chickens to be kept in residential zones/urban areas. Many municipalities throughout Ontario have allowed chickens in urban areas, either as a permitted use or through limited pilot programs,” read a Township statement, preceding a public discussion.

Jesse McPhail, Community Planner, added that Council was also considering potential impacts of noise, odor and aesthetics concerning chickens.

He discussed the potential of a backyard hen pilot program, usually including common restrictions such as two to five chickens, no roosters, mandatory requirements for coop enclosures and rodent proofing.

Currently, chickens are permitted everywhere except residential zones in the municipality.

“We did receive one comment against having chickens in residential areas and villages, and they cited issues to do with noise…as well as smells…

(Council doesn’t) really have any concrete suggestions at this point…now we are looking at the community to see if there is an appetite for this,” said McPhail.

Residents were divided on the topic, many thinking a pilot project would lay an egg while others shared positive experiences of owning chickens.

“I’m sorry, I have my own livestock, and chickens belong in the country…maybe out in the country if they have a half acre lot away from people, fine, but in the community, its going to bring in fox, raccoons, skunks. You’re going to have a bigger problem bringing these chickens into an urban area than just the neighbours being pissed off because it stinks,” said resident Chris Edgar.

Many residents like Lynn White questioned the results of pilot projects in other municipalities, as well as the exact definition of urban and rural in the context of the by-law.

INGLESIDE, Ontario – The Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) Foundation had a great turnout at their first Family Fun Day fundraiser in Ingleside on Saturday, Sept. 21. “Events like these are important to raise awareness for the hospital,” said event organizer Cindy Peters.

“The province doesn’t pay for equipment so that money has to be raised through community support, like you’re seeing today.” The highlight of the event was the ride of the OPP’s precision motorcycle demonstration team, The Golden Helmets. The team is made up of OPP Constables from detachments from across the

province, including one member from the SD&G detachment, Cst. Ivan Lalonde. “This is the most positive police and public interaction you’ll see,” he said. Cst. Lalonde is a 24 year veteran of the police force. He began working as a motorcycle police officer in 2006 and joined the Golden Helmets in 2015. “It isn’t easy to get in (to the Golden Helmets) but it has been the best time of my career,” said Lalonde. The Golden Helmets took to the pavement of Dickinson Dr. in Ingleside at 1 p.m. and performed a series of complex precision manoeuvres. The team performs around 15 times a year, and this is the first time in roughly 20 years that they have come to Eastern Ontario.

COPA sends kids flying

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Flight 59 held their biennial COPA for Kids, free flight day for kids aged 8 to 17 on Sunday, Sept. 22 at Cornwall Regional Airport in Summerstown.

“This is an intro to these kids to the world of aviation,” said Fergie Legge, Treasurer for COPA Flight 59. “These are the next generation of pilots and aircraft mechanics.” Legge has been a pilot for 20 years and says that flying is something that he loves to do. “As long as I have a runway, I have that freedom to take off,” he said.

Eric Lamontagne, an organizer of the event said that all pilots and planes were certified and that they would be flying the kids to Long Sault and back, at an altitude of around 2,000 ft.

“It’s a chance for kids to see what flying is all about,” said Lamontagne.

LANCASTER, Ontario – At their meeting on Monday, Sept. 16, South Glengarry Township Council voted unanimously to cancel their tender to build a new community facility at Smithfield Park in South Lancaster.

The lowest bid that the township received for the tender was $346,582 from Bourgon Construction, which was more than $100,000 higher than the amount that the township had originally budgeted for the project.

The goal of the project was to build an open concept general purpose assembly facility 24’by 30’. Bourgon estimated that to build such a project would cost roughly $283 per sq. ft. plus an additional $100,000 to connect it to water and sewage and another $40,000 to do the parking lot, sidewalks and site grading.

Some councillors vocally expressed their dissatisfaction with the price tag of the bid.

“These are very upsetting numbers,” said Deputy Mayor Lyle Warden. “You could make a very nice house for that money.”

Mayor Frank Prevost pointed out that there are different standards for a building such as the one that was being considered than for a straightforward house, for instance, the requirement for it to be accessible.

“It isn’t being built as a post disaster structure, is being built as an assembly hall, which has different standards than a residential home,” said Ewen MacDonald, the Township’s General Manager of Infrastructure Services. “I won’t

World Junior A hockey Challenge coming to Cornwall in 2020 NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – It has been announced that come December 2020, Cornwall will be hosting the World Junior A Challenge.

This international tournament will see teams and hockey scouts from around the world come to town to see the future of hockey.

Taking place from Dec. 13 to 19 at the Cornwall Civic Complex, five-to-six of the top junior hockey teams in the world will be taking to the ice.

“If you look at some of the junior alumni who’ve played in this tournament, you are looking at some of the top NHL talent that played here just a few years ago,” said Jeff Beck, Senior Manager for Events and Properties with Hockey Canada.

Cornwall submitted a bid to host the tournament and Beck explained that there were a few things in the application that stood out to the selection committee.

“First off, there’s the infrastructure,” he said. “The Complex is a strong building and it is good to have the Benson Centre nearby as

SOUTH DUNDAS, Ontario – Heather MeGill, Liberal candidate in the SDSG riding for the upcoming federal election, finds the vandalism of her campaign signs in South Dundas ‘disturbing’.

“It is disturbing…I got a call from colleagues in the NDP office who actually lifted some (vandalized) signs. The (Trudeau) blackface issue is difficult…(people are) ridiculing the candidates because of this. Trudeau came up and apologized…many of us have done things in our youth that we are not proud of…this has really brought the concept of white privilege (top of mind). We have all become very aware, especially in the past few years, that this is hurtful to many friends and we are an open an just society. I believe in Canada and to be more conscious of the things that would hurt the citizens and friends,” said MeGill. MeGill understands how young people may have a tendency to vandalize signs as a former teacher. Throughout her education career, she encouraged empathy and thoughtfulness, regardless if a student was conducting an act of vandalism, addressing someone’s ethnic background or abilities.

Whether or not what Justin Trudeau did nearly 20 years ago was racist, the defacing of our local Liberal candidates’ signs, which happened this past week, was.

I don’t know what sort of statement the persons who defaced Heather Megill’s signs were trying to make, but the statement that they made publicly is that they are immature and that what they did was far more racist than Trudeau’s blackface. I believe that Trudeau did not put on blackface to be racist, and I think that the totality of his record as Prime Minister is more pertinent to this election and the future of this country than what he did nearly 20 years ago.

That being said, he should have known better by the age of 29, and especially by being the son of a former Prime Minister. If you feel that this 20-year-old failure in judgement speaks to his ability to lead, that’s fine, but then also consider that he has apologized for the mistake, and has worked hard to build reconciliation and promote multiculturalism in Canada, which is partially why this revelation is so shocking.

Consider the other side of the aisle. Andrew Scheer, the Leader of the Opposition said in 2005 in the House of Commons in a debate around gay marriage that “they cannot commit to the natural procreation of children. They

cannot, therefore, be married.” Scheer went on to say “how many legs would a dog have if you counted the tail as a leg? The answer is just four. Just because the tail is called a leg, does not make it a leg.” Scheer has never apologized for these comments and he has never said that his views have evolved. Consider what this says about his judgement and his ability to be a Prime Minister for all Canadians.

I’ve yet to decide who I will be voting for in this election. The Liberals have disappointed me on a number of files. We are two weeks in and what matters to me the most in my representatives, local or otherwise, are how they treat their constituents, their colleagues and their opponents. I want this election to be about real issues.

I commend our local Conservative Party candidate Eric Duncan and our NDP candidate Kelsey Schmitz for their statements condemning the actions of those who defaced Heather Megill’s signs. That is what real leaders should do, and the ones who committed this racist act of vandalism, could learn a lot by following their examples.

I saw some comment on our story about the defacing of Megill’s signs that she deserved it for running with the Liberals and Justin Trudeau.

Again, no. You can’t rail against Trudeau’s blackface and say that defacing a candidate’s sign in the same way is okay.

Calgary’s Muslim Mayor Naheed Nenshi

wrote an opinion piece in The Washington Post this week on the topic of Trudeau’s blackface.

“We cannot stand on moral high ground calling out leaders for offensive things they did, years ago, if we’re not also willing to stand up against the racist and discriminatory behavior that’s right in front of our faces in 2019,” he wrote. “We cannot choose our values a la carte when they benefit us — we need to be all-in, all the time.”

Finally, I really hope that none of the emails, letters and comments I get in response to this column are from anyone hypocritical enough to criticize this message if they have some poor failing of judgement in their past that they aren’t proud of, especially if they have ever said a racist or homophobic slur or worn blackface themselves.

To the Editor, This is Mr. Trudeau. This me.

Do I think he is racist? No. At the time of this photo, I was campaigning for Bernadette Clement and by proxy, for Trudeau.

When I am confronted with these media pieces on “racism”, I have to navigate my truth and understanding very carefully because there is a lot “noise” in these situations and many similar circumstances.

The “racism” of today is not the racism of yesterday. I have to look at things through the lens of CONTEXT, INTENTION, and CHARACTER. A white guy at an Arabian themed party, caught in pictures having a good time is not racist.

The image of our Prime Minister in brown make up is not racist.

What is the CONTEXT of this image?

White boy Trudeau is in either A) a picture with a group of women, in a jovial posture, or B) between 2 seemingly east indian dudes wearing turbans themselves at what appears to be a themed party and his face is painted brown.

What is the INTENTION of this image?

People posing for a picture at an Arabian themed party to capture a moment they were happy to be captured in.

What is the CHARACTER of Trudeau?

Based on my experience, based on my knowledge and yes, based on him as a politician, he is not a bad man. “How do you determine if he is bad?”

Using the spectrum of politicians, there are far worse polticians that exist compared to Trudeau and politics as it is, partly relates to choice, I would rather choose what I believe to be good and he is a good man, comparing apples (Canadian politicians) to apples (Canadian politicians).

As a drama teacher in a private school in Ocotber 2001, I imagine that he was going all in. Playing the part.

I can recall in college having a tam with fake dreads for whatever reason.

My friends came over from time to time for a visit and from time to time we shared a laugh wearing the hat and chilling out.

Don’t think my friends are racist because they put it on. We were having fun.

Don’t think that I am racist because I had a tam with dreads, in that small window of time, I owned it because I wanted “something” that gave me a connection to my culture.

Don’t think you are racist for not knowing what a tam is or what dreadlocks mean to a black person. And that is the crux of this issue to me. This. Is. Not. Racism.

We all don’t have the same

understanding of racism because WE ALL HAVE NOT had a real meaningful conversation about it.

Just because civil rights were passed doesn’t mean today we are living civilly or equally for that matter.

Racism doesn’t exist just because you do not talk about it.

If the tv tells you something is racist, would you not stop to ask someone who may know what racism feels like and looks like if this is racist?

Don’t play politics with politicians. Let this be there game.

This is time in which our attention is the most sensistive and sensitive tactics are going to be used to get our collective attention.

The fact that the idea of asking someone who a minority what racism is to them makes people uncomfortable is a sign of the racism I am worried about. The subtle stuff.

It is a conversation that needs to be had but because we don’t have it, we feel safe believing we are not racist.

That is the danger we are now in.

We are looking at a white guy with a brown painted face and calling THAT racism.

It makes me laugh and cry at the same time.

It is a tragedy from Shakespeare.In short,

As the United States gears up for the first manned/crewed space launch from Cape Canaveral since the space shuttle era (last launch was in 2011), Cornwall native Lt.-Col Anthony (Tony) Johnson of the Royal Canadian Air Force has had a hand in designing an emergency global contingency rescue plan to back up the U.S. flights.

NASA plans to shuttle astronauts and supplies in specially designed spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS). Up until now, no NASA spacecraft services the space station.

That has fallen to the Russian Soyuz flight program. “(Global) contingency rescue is a nice way of saying ‘if something goes wrong,’” said Johnson who a few years back, as a major, was on loan to the U. S. Southern Command based in Miami.

The “if something goes wrong” could be the need to abort after launch or problems on reentry, both requiring an unplanned splash down which is when the contingency rescue plan kicks in.

Johnson role was to research and write the order for air Mobility Command and inform them what they need to do to prepare for upcoming regular spacecraft launches. NASA’s commercial crew program worked with Boeing and SpaceX to design, to build, test and operate

manned transportation systems to the space station, and beyond. It will be the first time NASA has sent astronauts to space on systems owned, built, tested and operated by private companies.

It’s a new ball game for the kick-started U.S. space program.

“Our contingency response is likely, and hopefully, never going to be used, but I think that in the event of an emergency we can trust that astronauts, including Canadians, will be in good hands,” he said.

That the Americans gave such a task to a Canadian officer speaks volumes of the respect they have for Canadian Armed Forces trained officers.

Lt.-Col Johnson is son of Don and Linda Johnson. His brother Patrick also serves with the Royal Canadian Air Force and is stationed in Trenton.

For several seasons he was the back-up colour commentator and play-byplay radio voice for Ottawa Senators games. He has been with CJBQ Belleville since 1974. He’s also a Belleville city councillor.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The second annual Win this Space contest has wrapped up and after 22 competing businesses, one has come out on top and will be joining the downtown. Kelsey Lee and her bridal boutique business Love and Lee stood out to the Win this Space judges and has won $1,000 a month for a year to cover rent costs.

The finals were held on Sept. 18 at Esca in Cornwall’s downtown and a panel of judges selected Love and Lee over four other business proposals.

“I’m opening a bridal boutiques in downtown Cornwall,” said Lee. “We plan on servicing brides sized two to 22, so we welcome brides of all shapes and sizes. You will be getting a salon for a full hour and 15 minutes to yourself and your entourage. We just want to create an atmosphere that’s fresh and open and relaxing and comforting and just new in the area, so we’re very excited about that. ” The new business will be located at 111 Pitt St., part of the old Tweed and Hickory building and Lee hopes to open by Dec. 1, 2019.

Martha Woods, Chair of the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA) said

that she was pleased with the growing participation in the annual competition.

“We’ve proven that this concept works and we’re so pleased with all of the submissions we received,” said Woods. “The final decision was incredibly difficult because of the strong field of finalists who worked incredibly hard on their business plans and presentations.”

Lee said that she was grateful to be able to participate and win such an opportunity.

“It was an awesome experience. I think it is great that they are doing this initiative,” she said, “It is such motivation for people to create a business and turn their dreams into a reality and it is

kind of the boost that you need, because in the back of your mind, you are always worried about overhead costs so if you can offset that somehow, it is just such an amazing program and I recommend it to anybody.”

In her acceptance speech, Lee said that starting a business was a lot of work and perseverance.

“If you have a passion and you think you can turn it into your life career, I’d say go for it, go with your gut,” she said. “It’s not easy, definitely, it takes a lot of perseverance and for every ten “no’s”, maybe you’ll get a “yes” and that yes is so important because everybody else said no.”

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario – The town of Alexandria in North Glengarry is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year.

To commemorate the bicentennial, the Township of North Glengarry partnered with the Glengarry Arts Collective to create a mural celebrating the town’s history.

There were 32 artists who contributed to the project. Each artist worked on a different part of the mural and when each was complete, all the

pieces were assembled together and mounted on the side of the North Glengarry Township Hall in Alexandria.

The mural was mounted on Sept. 19 and unveiled the following day. One artist explained that it was her passion for her home that lead her to want to contribute to the project.

“I moved to Alexandria six years ago and this town set my life on fire,” said Yvonne Callaway of the Glengarry Arts Collective. “Everything in this mural is a reflection of what Alexandria means to our artists.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – The NDP officially launched their campaign in the riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry at Rurban Brewing on Wednesday, Sept. 18. NDP candidate Kelsey Catherine Schmitz has already been going door-to-door hearing the concerns of constituents. “I’ve been hearing a lot of concerns around provincial issues and the cuts that have been made by Doug Ford,” she said. “There has also been a lot of concern around health issues. We are talking about tackling medicine with a proactive healthcare policy.” Some of the guests of the packed event explained why they had come out to show their support of the NDP. “As a retired person, I value the policies of the NDP,” said Russell of St. Andrews. “I t is about time that we share the wealth instead of it all going to

the rich.” In her speech to the audience, Schmitz outlined some of her party’s platform including the push for a $15 an hour minimum wage, pharmacare and a “proactive healthcare system.”

Schmitz explained what type of MP she wants to be. “I’ve seen what the cuts to healthcare and education have done to our country,” she said.

“I’ve seen this and I wonder how we can do better. I see the role of MP as an act of service. One where I spend time with the people of this riding to listen to their concerns.” Schmitz went on to share a recent quote from NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. “”How will you pay for it?” This is never a question when it comes to corporate tax cuts, buying pipelines, fossil fuel subsidies or Corporate loans,” Schmitz said. “But always a question whenever we want to invest in people.

It’s about priorities. We don’t work for the rich, we’re in it for you.”

Powerful stories shared at Take Back the Night CORNWALL, Ontario – A powerful group of women, alongside a handful of men and children, marched through city streets during the evening of Thursday, Sept. 20, chanting powerful mantras against sexual assault.

“No more silence, stop the violence!” exclaimed the group. “Whose streets? Our streets!” “I think this is a great way to show that the community does care about things like, as much as it’s a hard topic to talk about, sexual violence. It effects everyone. One in three

women will experience sexual violence and one in six men…it’s an everyone issue and I’m glad to see men, women and children at the event tonight,” said co-organizer Christine Piette.

Piette thanked representatives of the Women’s Committee who helped put together signs and inform the public about the event.

She also thanked SASS for their continued support and feedback on hosting the march.

Prior to the march that departed from St. Lawrence College just after 7 p.m., speeches were made by various representatives of community organizations that strive to support local women who are survivors of sexual assault,

Le BSEO publie le rapport sur la santé mentale dans l’Est ontarien

Le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario (BSEO) a publié un instantané de l’état de la santé mentale dans l’Est ontarien.

Cet instantané vise à déterminer un référentiel en vue des efforts de promotion et de surveillance futurs du BSEO et de ses partenaires communautaires locaux en matière de santé mentale. Le rapport est fondé sur le Cadre d’indicateurs de surveillance de la santé mentale positive de l’Agence de la santé publique du Canada, le cadre servant de structure avec laquelle mesurer la santé mentale à l’aide de 25 indicateurs différents. « La santé mentale est une priorité dans notre région. Ce rapport constitue un appel à l’action pour tous nos partenaires communautaires, soit de continuer à collaborer à la promotion de la santé mentale », déclare Dr Paul Roumeliotis, Médecin hygiéniste. « De nombreux comités et agences pourront bénéficier de ces données alors que nous travaillons ensemble avec notre population pour augmenter les facteurs de protection qui favorisent la santé mentale. » Il ajoute qu’avec ses partenaires communautaires, le BSEO travaille à lancer une campagne visant la promotion de la vie et la sensibilisation à la santé mentale au cours des quelques prochains mois dans le but de promouvoir la résilience et le bien-être psychologique. Dans ce rapport, le secteur de

service du BSEO a obtenu sensiblement la même note que le reste de l’Ontario pour la plupart des indicateurs tels que la satisfaction à l’égard de la vie et le bien-être social, mais il y a quelques exceptions remarquables comparativement à la province en général.

LE TAUX D’AUTOMUTILATION

La population de la région a un plus haut taux de personnes qui se font du mal intentionnellement qu’ailleurs en Ontario. Ceci est remarqué dans le nombre de personnes par 100 000 habitants qui sont admises à l’Urgence de l’hôpital à cause d’automutilation. Alors que 155 personnes ont été admises en Ontario, 206 ont été admises dans l’Est ontarien en 2017. Les femmes sont particulièrement à risque d’automutilation dans l’Est ontarien, où 316 personnes par 100 000 habitants ont été admises à l’Urgence à cause d’automutilation en 2017, comparé à 205 en Ontario.

Le rapport révèle aussi que les taux de gros buveurs et de fumeurs dans la région du BSEO sont plus élevés que dans le reste de l’Ontario.

Bien que 44 % de la population âgée de 19 ans et plus s’autodéclarent comme ayant dépassé le nombre de verres tel qu’établi dans les directives de consommation d’alcool à faible risque en Ontario, ce nombre augmente à 48 % dans

l’Est ontarien.

La situation est sensiblement la même pour l’usage des produits du tabac. Bien que tout juste moins de 12 % de la population âgée de 12 ans et plus ont déclaré être fumeur présentement en Ontario, ce nombre s’élève à plus de 16 % dans l’Est ontarien.

Pour mieux comprendre les effets de la santé mentale sur la population de l’Est

Dundas, North Stormont et South Glengarry. « Il y a de nombreux avantages à avoir des arbres le long des routes », explique Cheyene Brunet, technicienne en foresterie à la CNS. « Ils absorbent et filtrent les eaux de ruissellement en bordure des routes, servent de brise-vent naturels, procurent habitat et nourriture à la faune et réduisent la pollution sonore », a-t-elle ajouté. La CNS exécute ce programme au nom des comtés de SDG et est responsable de la commande d’arbres, de leur plantation, entretien, réapprovisionnement et du suivi jusqu’à ce que ces arbres soient capables de pousser par leurs propres moyens. De nouveaux

sites de plantation sont sélectionnés chaque année par le personnel de la CNS et du comté.

L’ajout des 5 sites cette année portera à 32 le nombre total de projets de plantation d’arbres en bordure de route à travers SDG depuis le début de la collaboration en 2010. « De tels programmes contribuent à améliorer les espaces publics et le couvert forestier local, tout en laissant un héritage naturel aux générations futures », a fait valoir Mme Brunet. La CNS travaille également avec les propriétaires fonciers locaux en leur offrant diverses subventions pour la plantation d’arbres sur des terres en friche, des terrains agricoles et le long des

cours d’eau. Des ventes de conifères et de feuillus en vente libre sont également offertes pour les petites commandes et sont acceptées toute l’année. Au total, la CNS a planté plus de 3,2 millions d’arbres dans son territoire de 4 384 km², dans l’Est de l’Ontario, depuis 1990. « Cette année seulement, nous avons planté plus de 140 000 arbres dans le cadre de nos programmes forestiers, de partenariats municipaux et communautaires, de dons d’arbres et d’activités de plantation », a déclaré Mme Brunet. « Notre objectif est d’ores et déjà d’améliorer le paysage local durant la saison de plantation tout au long de l’année 2020. »

Cornwall man dies in Army Run OTTAWA, Ontario – Cornwall native Philip Everson collapsed at the finish line during the Army Run in Ottawa on Sunday and passed away a short time later.

He was 26-years-old.

Everson was a graduate of St. Lawrence Secondary School and later, the University of Waterloo.

Everson collapsed of cardiac arrest at around 11:25 a.m. and despite the best efforts by Ottawa Paramedics, they were unable to revive him.

He was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased a short time later.

Philip Everson was the son of Tom and Johneen Everson and was the older brother of sister Rebecca.

“It is with great sadness that I tell you that our son Philip passed away earlier today,” reads a statement attributed to the Eversons on Facebook.

“After completing his race at the Army Run he

collapsed and despite the heroic efforts of many medical personnel he could not be revived. He died doing what he loved and will be missed by many. Please keep our family in your prayers.”

There was also shock expressed on social media from members of the community at Everson’s sudden passing.

“My heart breaks for Tom Everson, Johneen Everson and Rebecca, it is truly a very sad day in Cornwall today,” reads a post from Karen Torrie-Racine.

“We are extremely sad at this news. Phil did his co-op placement and volunteered with us a decade ago. Even at a young age his maturity, professionalism and technical ability stood out.

Phil will be greatly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” reads a statement from YourTV Cornwall. Everson had been competing in the half-marathon Army Run, a 21.1 km course on Sunday. He was one of more than a dozen people treated by the Ottawa Paramedic Services, mostly for heat exhaustion.
