Why local leaders still matter in Ottawa Invest in A Separation Agreement 3 MINUTES WITH THE MP

ERIC DUNCAN MP STORMONT, DUNDAS & GLENGARRY

Without a doubt, the past two weeks since the announcement of the NAV Centre being used as a precautionary federal quarantine site has been an emotional and frustrating situation. It has been a challenge to channel our Mayor and community’s anger with the poor communication and rollout of the news late on a Saturday evening without notice or consultation. My work as your Member of Parliament is certainly far from finished. I keep briefed on a regular basis throughout the quarantine, keep in contact with Mayor Clement and SD&G Warden Prevost, and will continue to encourage as much information to be shared publicly. There are further questions to be asked and follow ups to be done too and I will continue to be a voice for our community on this issue. In every local file or issue that arises, I try to take a constructive lesson or message out of the situation. While this issue is far from

concluded, as there as many unanswered questions about the communications breakdown and lack of local consultation, I have taken one key lesson that I plan to repeat on Parliament Hill very often: local leaders and voices still matter in Ottawa. While some may consider that cliché, our experience here the past couple of weeks proves that more than ever. Very often in government decisions, the local Member of Parliament and Mayors would be confidentially briefed or advised of an upcoming decision. That would provide them an opportunity to give feedback and advice early in the process to ensure a smooth rollout. If Mayor Clement or myself had been given the respect of a heads up, I believe the rollout and communications would have been much improved after hearing our advice on past experiences at NAV Centre and how confusion and concerns could be raised about the site. We could have been out in front with proactive information and questions about the suitability instead of struggling to gain information as hundreds of residents were reaching out to us. Local leaders like Members of Parliament, Mayors and local administrators are not an inconvenience. They know the history and context of their local community and they can help the federal government ‘on the ground’ when local concerns. Let that be the first lesson learned early on from this frustrating experience here at home.

Some people are lucky in love. Some people are lucky in divorce. You want to be in the latter category when your relationship breaks down. If you are, you and your spouse will be able to work out the details of an agreement that will allow you to move forward and keep as much money in your pocket as possible. You and your spouse can agree (within limits) to whatever you’d like. But you both must know what the law can give you and what you are giving up. Work together and discuss the issues as much as possible. Exchange financial information. Write down what you agree on. There will be three main issues to discuss: custody/parenting of children, support and separation of property. All seemingly boring subjects until it’s your paycheck being garnished, your children that you see every other week and you out looking for a new home. You both need a lawyer. You may ask: Why can’t we use the same lawyer when drafting a separation agreement - we are in agreement and want to save some money? Because each party needs advice on their specific interests. One lawyer can draft the agreement and the other spouse will obtain independent

legal advice. That is the most financially efficient way to handle this problem. One lawyer writes the agreement for one spouse, another lawyer reviews for the other spouse. Some couples want to avoid involving lawyers in their separation at all costs. Some feel they can agree to jot a few lines on a napkin and call it a day. Unfortunately for them, the cost that they may actually end up paying when the napkin agreement no longer cuts it, will far eclipse the cost of a clear, legal and complete separation agreement. *Only my clients get my legal advice. Animal talk Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words

NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

As soon as I entered his house, I realized that the contents of his so-called museum were little more than a dog’s breakfast of items of sentimental value. I was unable to ferret out anything of value. When asked about his childhood days, he just clammed up. It seemed obvious he had endured hard times, prompting him to squirrel away reserves whenever possible. He just doggedly kept at the task of accumulating more stuff. He must have worked like a dog every day. That’s when I decided to just let a sleeping dog lie. There was an elephant in the room, but I didn’t bring it up. His museum project became his swan song as a collector. When he first made his

impassioned speech in my office, everyone started gophering to see what the commotion was all about. He thought he had hit a fly ball, but as soon as he threw down the bat there was no way he was even going to make it to first. Afterwards, his presentation prompted some animated discussions. His idea was to raise money for his museum by becoming a card shark at the local casino. He had an accomplice act as a mole to reveal the table’s secrets. Seemingly wealthy, he was sometimes preyed upon by the local cougars. Those ladies became quite crabby when he didn’t pony up when his bill became due. Some tried to take him to court, but his lawyer showed him how to weasel out of his financial commitments. It took us quite a while to ferret out his casino accomplice. When confronted, he took a slug of whiskey to calm his nerves. As a result, he made a complete ass of himself. He started to carp about the legality of our

activities. His guilt was revealed as clearly as if he were a nude statue without a cod piece. Nevertheless, his museum was eventually bulldozed. Caterpillars were rented to do the job. When walls were collapsing, the workers had to duck. Unfortunately, their horseplay resulted in some serious injuries. To keep the dusty air breathable, a donkey engine kept the area’s ventilation system working during the frequent power failures. When his molehill of a building was finally levelled, it revealed a spider web of wires and pipes that weren’t up to code. During the following spring, I noticed pussy willows had sprung up on the levelled site. Just for a lark, some local urchins set fire to the grass. In my rush to take refuge in the adjacent pond, my car keys fell out of my pocket. I had to fish for them. That evening I read of speculative trading going on in the museum market. I knew that during a bull market, a lot of money can be

gained, so I jumped in, whole hog. My wife was badgering me to do it. Greed had wormed its way into our lives. I should have taken his failure as my canary in the coal mine. Speculators can have a whale of a time, but only if they’re lucky. However, I was counting my chickens before they hatched. Holy cow! It was amazing! I became so engrossed that I often had to wolf down my lunch. I threw all caution to the wind, ignoring that my little gains were just a red herring. When the bank called, I smelled a rat. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to pony up any money. I had to take the bull by the horns and let my Dodge Colt be repossessed. To make matters worse, at the bankruptcy hearing, I made the mistake of giving some bull during testimony. I should have just parroted what my lawyer told me to say. That’s why I’m now trying to recoup my fortune as a columnist.

Cornwall Seaway News gets nods for OCNA Awards nseebruch@seawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall Seaway News like many local papers across the province of Ontario is a member of the Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA). Every year, this paper submits the best we have to offer for consideration in the OCNA’s Better Newspaper Awards.

This year, Seaway News received the nod and was nominated in three different categories. We are proud to say that we have been nominated for Best Use of Colour in an Ad, Best Website, and Best Headline Writing. The headlines that were submitted to the OCNA for consideration were “Weed facts to toke into consideration”, “Big stink around garbage deal”, and “Would you Give a Shirt?”. “Seaway News has been a proud

community newspaper for the past 35 years and making the top of these awards categories is quite the honour,” said Seaway News Publisher General Manager Rick Shaver. “Over the past years we have been winners and we hope to continue this tradition in April in Toronto.” Shaver credits the hard work of his team for producing a quality product worthy of recognition.

“The staff works hard and Seaway News readers have experienced excellent editorial writing, now both in print and on our website,” he said. “Our sale staff is front center every day working with their clients on new ideas on the web, paper and our magazines.” The OCNA Awards dinner takes place April 3 in Toronto.

FRANK PREVOST SOUTH GLENGARRY

Fun is always had by all when we support our community through sport, recreation, play, and business in South Glengarry, and February was a great example. This month, staff and councillors cheered in the hockey stands of the Alexandria Sports Palace and curled for local businesses in Lancaster with great team spirit. A Char-Lan Rebels game against the Glens on January 31st brought friendly competition against our

neighbours to the North, where our Rebels won their game, 5-1! The Township later participated in the Business Curling Bonspiel in Lancaster on February 8th with two teams to support local businesses. On February 11th, our CAO Tim Mills, and I attended an Economical Development Meeting with MPP McDonell & Randy Pettapiece, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs, in a roundtable discussion on Rural Economic Development, to continue our Agri-focus from last month and to ensure rural communities are heard as we continue to grow South Glengarry together. Our Recreation Department organized public skating programs for students and Family Day, which saw over 50 residents in attendance. Providing an active community to our residents is a key element to our physical and mental health we aim to support as part of

our Township’s Active-Living Charter. Be sure to join us at the Char-Lan Centre on March 1st from 12-3pm to enjoy our upcoming “Great Canadian Kilt Skate” - A great event, in partnership with the Scottish Society of Ottawa, that is sure to bring out the Celtic in all of us. South Glengarry supports a bully free SD&G and is proud to collaborate with the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG to participate in Pink Shirt Day, or Anti-Bullying Day, by wearing pink. We hope everyone will join us on February 26th to lift each other up and refuse to let bullying define who we are as a Township. By lifting each other up and working together as a community, we will continue to grow as a Township and support a municipality that is active, healthy, and welcoming to all residents.

Fat bikes all the rage at Summerstown Trails SHAWNA O’NEILL

soneill@seawaynews.media

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Friends of the Summerstown Trails happily accepted two additional fat bikes for their programs, donated by co-Owners of The Brick, Shawn and Kyle Maloney. “The Brick has supported the trails in past years, and it’s great to see them step up to the plate again with this major contribution,” said FOTST President, Vic Leroux. “This donation shows how committed The Brick is towards the community and towards a healthy lifestyle. One of the newly donated fat bikes has a large frame, while the other one has a junior frame. The new additions complement the existing two bikes owned by the trails which have medium frames. Now, individuals shorter than 5’6” and taller than 5’10” in height can take part in the fat bike fun. Fat biking has recently become a popular activity for individuals looking to participate in a winter activity. Fat bike riders are able to access 9 km of snowshoe trails in Summerstown, with signage posted to aid in navigation. The trails offer a range of difficulty, so beginner and experienced fat bikers

can enjoy this up-and-coming sport. Trails are groomed specifically for fat biking thanks to a partnership between FOTST and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA). Fat bikes are only available for rental at the trail entrance on weekends during regular rental period (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.). The bikes are rented out for one-hour periods at a cost of $15. Riders are encouraged to wear a

helmet, even though the Ontario law stipulates that it is only mandatory for those under the age of 18. A regular bicycle helmet will be sufficient (some are available at the trails), but many bikers wear ski helmets. The Summerstown Trails are located on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of Hwy. 401.

South Glengarry greenlights new Lancaster community building NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

LANCASTER, Ontario – South Glengarry Council approved the construction of a new community building in Smithfield Park. The Township awarded the contract to Bradford M. Hubbard Construction Inc. at their Feb. 18 meeting for a total price of $233,440. The building will be 720 sq. ft. with a capacity of 39 people. This is the second time that the Township put out a tender for the construction of this project. The previous tender was rejected out of concerns over high costs. In September 2019, Council rejected a bid to build the project because it was $100,000 higher than what the township had budgeted. The Township broke down the project into two tenders in the second go-around, one for

the building, and one for surfacing the splashpad and connecting the building to water and sewer. “Again, the prices were somewhat higher than what we were expecting,” said Township General Manager of Infrastructure Services Ewen MacDonald, who acknowledged that the cost was still within engineer estimates. “We have reviewed for accuracy and completeness and they are compliant. I’ve also reviewed tenders for similar sized projects, and the costs are in line with those. We’ve gone to the market twice, with essentially the same results.” MacDonald explained that the bidder had been asked to provide options to save further costs, such as using drywall instead of plastic sheeting, or putting in a shingle roof. MacDonald recommended rejecting those measures. “We do not recommend the cost saving

items because they would provide a lower quality material,” he said. “In the past I know that council has always deferred to the higher quality materials to preserve the life cycle.” The gallery at Monday night’s meeting was filled with Lancaster residents who supported the construction of the new building, councillors acknowledged that the residents of Lancaster had waited long enough for this building. “I was one of the ones who was against this and I still have issues with the price tag. We’ve done our due diligence. I think it is time for us to move on with this project,” said Councillor Martin Lang. The construction of the new building is expected to begin sometime in May. Council awarded the contract to connect the building to water and sewer and pave the site to Malyon Construction for a cost of $141,029.

Peanut Butter Challenge returns SHAWNA O’NEILL

soneill@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Peanut Butter Challenge has returned for the month of February in support of our local Agapè Centre. The campaign to raise donations of peanut butter, which is recognized as a staple item at Agapè, was originally the brainchild of the late John Earle. Gadbois Insurance Agency has decided to carry on the important campaign in his honour. “John Earle was a client and friend…(this is) in memory of him,” explained Renee Gadbois, Owner of Gadbois Insurance Agency. Renee said that when she recently participated in a tour of the Centre, she learned that peanut butter is an important item for many families. With Agapè currently serving approx. 1,200 families, of which 350 individuals are children, peanut butter is a simple and nutritious option that has a long shelf life.

“People can drop off donations or call and we will pick them up,” explained Renee, who said over 100 jars have been donated so far this month, and the Agency is hoping to surpass a goal set by Earle of 401 donations. Challenging specific businesses may also be in the cards for the campaign in 2021. “The Agapè Centre is thrilled with the initiative taken by Gadbois Insurance Agency,” said Agapè Executive Director Lisa Duprau. “The peanut butter drive being held in February, in memory of John Earle, will help to keep our shelves stocked with this popular and always needed food item. We look forward to our new partnership with the team at Gadbois Insurance Agency as we work together to address food insecurity in our community” If you have peanut butter donations or are interested in learning more about the Peanut Butter Challenge, contact Gadbois Insurance Agency at (613) 938-3443.

Direct Muffler celebrates 20 years NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario – Since Direct Muffler opened 20 years ago, it has gained a reputation for quality and honest repairs, and owner Denis Lafave is proud of the legacy that he built. “We took something from nothing and now it has grown into the largest independently owned garage in Cornwall,” Lafave said. “We went from absolutely nothing and we took off

right way. We’ve been busy since day one.” What began as a small shop on the corner of Seventh and Pitt streets has grown into a 10,000 sq. ft. business, on Rosemount Ave. just off of Brookdale. When Lafave started he had two mechanics, including himself, and a counter person. Lafave said that early on after his new business opened, it was robbed, and he lost all of his tools. He credits the support of his wife Jean with keeping him going and getting him back on his feet. Jean Lafave tragically

passed two years ago but saw Denis’ dream of his current garage on Rosemount come into shape. While he was building his new shop at Direct Muffler’s current location, Lafave worked hard to keep his original garage running at the same time. When it came time to setup the new garage, his whole team came together and set it up in one-week. “We never skipped a beat,” Lafave said. “My first month at the new location, I doubled my sales.”

Lafave says that he works to keep different parts in stock for his customers and has the expertise to solve any problem. “People trust us,” he said. “We’re honest and provide good and reliable service. I want to thank all of my loyal customers new and old.” A point of particular pride for Lafave is that in 20 years, his garage has never lost time to a workplace accident. Direct Muffler will celebrate their 20th anniversary on March 1.

Muir wins Citizen of the Year at Business Excellence Awards NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Chamber of Commerce held their annual Business Excellence Awards gala on Saturday, Feb. 22. Taking place at the Cornwall Civic Complex, the sold out event saw 220 attendees celebrate local businesses. “This year’s business winners are a reflection of the strength and diversity of the Cornwall business community,” saidthe

Chamber’s president Shannon Lebrun. There were a few notable changes this year from previous versions of the event. This year’s awards were filmed by YourTV. Also, there were multiple nominees announced for most categories this year. There were 10 awards given out in total, but the one that always receives the most interest and excitement is the Citizen of the Year Award. This year’s Citizen of the Year is Terry Muir. Volunteers winner and a community volunteer for more than 30 years, Muir exemplified the qualities sought in a community leader. “Terry Muir is an example to us all and is representative of Cornwall’s generous spirit,” Lebrun said. In his acceptance speech, Muir thanked the community, and his wife Wendy. The following are the winners of the nine Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards: Business of the Year – Cornwall Nissan Small Business of the Year – Glengarry Fine

It has been a busy week for many in Cornwall. On Friday, the Coronavirus quarantine began at the Nav Centre. Since this news was announced, there has been a lot of concern and fear and worry about Cornwall hosting this quarantine. The city has found itself once again, in an uncomfortable spotlight, but on the next day, Saturday, there was a different event, one that I feel brought some normalcy and highlighted the many reasons Cornwall has to celebrate. This past weekend was the annual Chamber Business Excellence Awards dinner. For more than 30 years, this event has celebrated the best that Cornwall has had to offer. I’ve attended the past four of these awards dinners, and they are always memorable, but maybe because of everything else going on in town right now, this one felt special. This year’s event saw a few new elements introduced, including multiple announced nominees, and being held at the Civic Complex made the event feel a little more casual, but cozy. The event was also filmed, which means that the whole community, the ones who have YourTV, will be able to share in a few special moments. Let me just say, that all of the winners on Saturday night, were deserving in their own right. Each winner has accomplished amazing things in Cornwall and the surrounding area. One special moment that stands out to me is when Rob and Ana Curran, the owners of Riley’s Bakery, were presented with the Lifetime Achievement in Business Award. Riley’s has been a treasured part of Cornwall for more than 100 years, and the Curran’s have been running the shop for 30. It was immediately evident to the whole room that this recognition meant a lot to the Currans, who received a standing ovation from the room. Everyone in that room knew the Riley’s name and I’m sure that many have had a stacked Riley’s sandwich. I know this writer has. I was a little skeptical about the introduction of formal nominations this year. In past years, guests to the event knew who was going to win, save for the Citizen of the Year, but I felt that the nominations created some joyful surprises. One such surprise was for Chris and Jordan O’Brien, who received the Above and Beyond Award. I saw the reaction on Jordan’s face when she realized they were the ones who were picked for the award and they were truly surprised. The couple, who own FreshCo, thanked the community and explained how welcomed they felt here when they came to Cornwall and the support they’ve received from the community as they’ve care for their daughter. The support they’ve received, they have given back in spades. The O’Briens have supported many causes in the community including the Agape Centre, and have most recently held a fundraiser for Terry Muir and his wife Wendy. This brings me to what I feel is the crowning achievement of this event. Terry Muir was selected as the 2020 Citizen of the Year. Terry has been a volunteer in this community for decades. He has been involved in a wide variety of events, such as the annual Christmas Toy Drive. You see him everywhere. He has been recognized with the Governor General’s Sovereign Medal for Volunteers. No one in that room doubted that Terry deserved this honour. Being held at the Civic Complex, in the hall right outside the room where the event was taking place, is the wall of past Citizens of the Year and there is no question that Terry belongs on that wall. This honour meant a lot to Terry, who recently has been going through a rough time with his wife recently undergoing a serious medical procedure. Seeing Terry’s reaction was a very heartwarming moment, one that I believe Cornwall needed after a week filled with anxiety. When Cornwall makes the regional or national news, it is often for something negative, like a quarantine, refugees, feral cats, etc., but we know better. We know that Cornwall has wonderful people in it who are doing wonderful things. Good job to the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and everyone who took part in the Business Excellence Awards for reminding us of all we have to be proud of.

THE $9 MILLION MISTAKE AT BROOKDALE & TOLLGATE A few weeks ago it was revealed that the City bought the northwest corner property at Brookdale & Tollgate Road for $1.5 million … for a new Fire Hall. The Fire Department and Consultants made a presentation to Council shortly after the purchase was announced. I watched it on TV. Leaving more questions unanswered than answered after the Council presentation, I sought out the Business Plan: Fire Stn & Training Centre – Nov 2018. What I’m looking for in the report is the JUSTIFICATION for a $9 million plus expenditure. I fail to find it. What I’ve read is really an analysis of several locations. I expect to see a scattergram of sorts showing fires by city zone/ locations. Oddly the report does not talk about fires. It talks about calls and response times. All calls are equal! Surely a call to rescue Mrs. Jones cat up a tree should not equate to the Poirier Furniture Fire. There should be some kind of classification by severity. There was talk in the presentation of an Open House. This was attended by some 38 people - of which 30 was firemen plus 2 councillors & 1 wife – leaving a total of 5 others. As input for any kind of decision making, this is one very poor and inadequate sample … the info obtained from this effort is worse than useless … it’s misleading. I see no proof this $9.2 million expenditure is needed. A new station would certainly cover north of 13th St. better than the existing, but would be

poorer in response to the old part of the city i.e. below 13th St. Indeed fire frequency in those newer northern neighbourhoods with newer construction has to be less than the older parts. By the way there is nothing wrong with some overlap, when the overlap is where most of the fires occur. When you have big one like Poirier Furniture overlap / backup is desirable. One area of the 2018 report that was conducive to some financial analysis was the “TRAINING COMPONENT”. There is nothing! Surely the building incremental costs can be identified. Historic training expenses can be costed. Any new external revenue forecast and so on. Does the fire department not have an annual report? Where is the statistical analysis showing things like number of firemen, per thousand populations, compared to other similar sized Ontario cities? The existing structure has served us well for 40 years. Surely the City must have greater priorities for $9.2 million.

be full-time. Thus, this holder of the office became Cornwall’s official first full-time mayor (with a full-time salary): 1) Brian Lynch, 2) Ron Martelle, 3) Gerald Parisien, 4) Phil Poirier, 5) Ed Lumley. TRIVIA ANSWER: After the death of Mayor Emile Menard on Aug. 12, 1957, Ald. L. G. (Archie) Lavigne was elected by his council peers to fill the vacancy. Lavigne returned in December 1958 when he defeated challengers Dr. Elzear Emard and Nick Kaneb in the municipal election. When Ron Martelle resigned with just months left in his second term, veteran councillor Dick Aubry was elected by council to fill the vacancy. SPORTS TALK: Defenceman Zach Bogosian released by the Buffalo Sabres last week is a native of Massena where his family operates a carpet business. He was in the final year of a seven-year contract that paid him $5.4 million a season. The 28-year-old defenceman was selected third overall in the 2008 NHL draft by Atlanta Thrashers. His father Ike played football at Syracuse University. Earlier this season the Sabres tried to trade Bogosian but there were no takers. The team offered to pick up half his salary. (Hot off the wire. The Lightning signed him Monday’s) ... Is there a bigger collection of overpaid, underachievers than the Maple Leafs? ... And when was the last time the visiting team’s goaltender got a standing ovation (Zamboni driver David Ayres) in the Leafs’ rink? THIS AND THAT: If a small band of activists can occupy a rail crossing and bring rail service to a standstill with impunity and endanger the economy, what are we going to do if the Russians decide to occupy our Arctic territory? ... The Fraser Institute calculates that Ontario now spends more ($12 billion) on debt interest payments than it spends on

post secondary education and doctors. Can’t blame that on the Ford guys and gals. The previous government doubled the debt (to $330 billion) during its last 10 years in office. Annual interest payments on senior government debt - provincial and Ontario’s share of the federal debt - works out to about $23,000 per Ontarian. Unlike the bank ad lingo, in Ontario you’re poorer than you thought (you were). THIS AND THAT: Talk about a guy caught between the proverbial rock and hard place, look no further than Perry Bellegarde, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, as he jumps from one side of the fence to the other in the blockade fiasco. ... Some of the folks who have jumped on the barricade bandwagon are non-Indigenous professional protesters. One activist website shared a link where protesters could apply for funding to help “shut down Canada”. ... Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg made a good point during the Democratic debate the other night. While Bernie Sanders embraces socialism and proclaims to be a champion of working stiffs, billionaire Bloomberg noted that the career Washington politician has managed to become a millionaire who owns three expensive homes. ... You know it is a slow day for the Queen’s Park opposition (and media) when vehicle licence plates are the hot item. FACTS’N’FIGURES: According to Statistics Canada there were 20,930 private dwellings in Cornwall in 2016. Of these, 10,190 were single-detached and 2,115 were semi-detached. There are 2,004 apartment properties in the city with a total of 8,449 units. QUOTED: “And God said ‘Let there be Satan so people don’t blame everything on me. And let there be lawyers so people don’t blame everything on Satan.’ “ - George Burns

Talk about missing a target by the proverbial country mile. In February 1963 a Toronto planning consultant hired by the city to map out an ambitious but much needed urban renewal program took a wild walk on the population prediction limb. He told an all-ears city council that by 1985 Cornwall’s population would soar to 75,000 and this - 1963 - was the time to prepare for the crush of new residents by building more duplexes and triplexes. So he missed by what, a few thousand. Actually, his forecast came up about 30,000 short. But he wasn’t the only population prognosticator to fall face first on the population file. During construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, another “expert” looked into his crystal ball and saw 100,000 living in the city by the end of the century. Later, in the 1970s, another “expert” took a shot at it and came up with 80,000. The city did undergo a population explosion in 1957 when annexation of 29 square miles of Cornwall Township (city had been one square mile) increased the number of residents to 36,000 from 17,030. These days consultants are offering modest, and more realistic, forecasts: 50,000 by 2025. As they say in the television business, stay tuned. ALSO THIS WEEK IN 1963: The population prediction plan ner proposed development of a large civic facility to house a cultural centre, auditorium for concerts, convention centre and library. He also urged waterfront development with the focus on Cornwall Canal. ... Fire believed caused by faulty wiring heavily damaged the Graham Creamery in Alexandria and left two families living upstairs

homeless. Several tons of butter in a storage area were save but 15,000 pounds of butter and 36 cartons of cheese were lost. ... Si Miller was named city recreation department facilities supervisor in charge of the Bob Turner Memorial Centre, Water Street Arena, ball diamonds and outdoor rinks. ... At the urging of police and fire departments, the traffic committee recommended that the long talked about extension of Seventh Street from the Brookdale traffic circle to Queen Street be fast-tracked. Both Fire Chief Lucien Carriere and Police Chief Allan Clarke warned that if Second Street was closed for whatever reason emergency vehicles would have to use the much longer Power Dam Road route to reach the Riverdale area. ... A 32-year-old city man who asked Magistrate P. C. Bergeron for mercy was handed a two-year penitentiary sentence for passing worthless cheques. ... Monogram Glass Co., makers of decorative glassware, set up shop in Cornwall. ... Rene Lauzon continued his hot post-season scoring pace with four goals and two assists as Cornwall Royals downed Winchester Hawks 15-4 to sweep an Ottawa and District Hockey Association playoff series. Art Bergeron and Ron Branchaud had three apiece, Ray Barnes two with Moe Whitford, Mike Murray and Ron Alguire adding one apiece. ... Cornwall Collegiate Golden Raiders, coached by Rollie Fobert, nailed down a berth in the all-Ontario senior boys’ high school basketball tournament with a 73-41 win over Smiths Falls. John Morgan led the Raiders with 24 points. Brian Loucks had 16, Bob Kinnear 14 and John Irvine nine. Dave Dorman had 16 points for the Falls. ... Stan Mikita of the Chicago Blackhawks held an eight-point edge on Gordie Howe of the Red Wings in NHL scoring. Mikita team-mate Bobby Hull was third, 11 points back. ... Holy Name Juvenile Hockey League player Jean Payette, 16, was signed to a prospect contract by the Boston Bruins. TRIVIA: The question of the role of mayor being full-time vs part-time was put to rest by city council when it declared the position to

With March Break fast approaching, here are a few suggestions to keep the children occupied while having fun ... • Dinner Theatre: Designate a night as “dinner theatre” and have kids and grown-ups alike dress up in homemade costumes (clothes they can find around the house). To make it educational too, have a theme night and get everyone to dress up like a president, king or historical figure. • Cook For The Night: Once kids are old enough, have them play cook for the night. Let The Cornwall Lions bantam boys basket- them choose the recipe, shop for the ingrediball team got a treat last week when Trevor ents and cook the meal for the family. Help out Steynor a long time coach at the Canada when needed but let them do most of the work. Topflight Academy basketball prep school in Ottawa came down to serve as their guest coach and give the team a few tips. Dr. Paul Roumeliotis of the EOHU said at Council on Monday night that schools had been calling him because some children have been bullied at school because their parents work at the Nav Centre, and other kids think that they might get infected with the Coronavirus. Bullying is never right, and in this situation, it is based on an unfounded and unreasonable fear. No Nav employees will have any contact with the quarantined patients, and the virus is not airborne.

Congratulations to Boston Pizza’s Traci Flewelling and staff for coming up with some low numbers of the “big bossess” inspection. Youve come a long way Traci. - From a very proud mom. Talk about service with a smile! On Feb. 12 there was an accident on Montreal Rd. The bus had to bypass several stops. So, Cornwall Transit assistant Connie picked up myself as well as three other passengers and dropped all of us off at our destinations. Great work an service from Cornwall Transit! Shows how much our bus drivers care, as well as their friendly and courteous service. Thanks again Connie! Writer does not understand why the city would clean the sidewalks snow banks on McConnell between 4th and 5th and will not clean the snow banks in front of the hospital, makes no sense to me. People use that sidewalk to go into the main entrance. It should be cleaned before the other parts of McConnell. - A frustrated tax payer.

Let’s Celebrate

• Costume Box: Children love to play “dress-up”. Why not encourage their imagination by creating a “costume box”. Fill this box with outgrown military fatigues, team uniforms, bridesmaid dresses, old Halloween costumes, etc. Garage sale finds also make great fillers for the box. Congratulations to the Holy Trinity boys basketball team who are heading to EOSSA. Hope everyone got their “fill” of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday ... yummy! The colour of springtime is in the flowers; the colour of winter is in the imagination.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

The Boss of our small company was complaining during a staff meeting that people didn’t respect him enough. Trying to change the attitude in the office he came in the next day with a sign for his door it said, “I am the boss”. One of the employees apparently not appreciating the change posted a post-a-note on the sign it said “your wife wants her sign back”

A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time of handcuffs. He immediately mailed in his $40.

Pet Tip of the Week: The arrival of spring means warmer weather and an increase in the number of wild animals on or near our highways and roads, often at dusk or during the night. Their safety and yours depends on your awareness and caution. Please drive with caution and be prepared to slow down.

Seen on Facebook: To the girl working at davids tea who after hearing my voice loss, took it upon herself to make me throat rescue tea with honey on the house! I couldn’t thank her enough and thought I’d post here so everyone knows shes just amazing! And maybe someone that knows her can tag her in this post. I didn’t get her name as I was in a hurry but thank you again it helped so much! Whoever wrote that Beaverton story clearly hasn’t been to the city in a few years. Also, while some took it as a lighthearted jab, there are others who feel that it is making light of a situation that is very serious to the people who live here. Congratulations to the following individuals who were inducted into the 2019 class of the Cornwall Arts Hall of Fame and who were recognized at Cornwall City Council on Monday night: Rick Forrester, Founder of the Glen Productions and builder of Glen Theatre, Brad Bonaparte, Mohawk culture activist and artist, Louise-Andrée Baril, Musician, Michèle Chauvin-Bourdon, Musician, Noella Cotnam, Artist, Janet Irwin, Theatre, Nicole Labelle, Founder of L’Amalgame, Roger Levac, Writer, scholar and painter, Veronica Maguire, Duncan McIntosh, Artistic director, and James Fagan Tait.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Kin Week in Cornwall continues. The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall are celebrating their 87th anniversary this week from Feb. 17 to Feb. 22. This week also marks the 100th anniversary of Kinsmen Canada. It all started on Monday with free events at the Cornwall Civic Complex including a pancake breakfast, skating, and free swimming a the Aquatic Centre. On Wednesday, the Kinsmen and the Kinette clubs of Cornwall presented donations to the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) and the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF). The Kinsmen presented $5,000 as the final installment of their $25,000 contribution to the hospital’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. They presented a further $25,000 for a new urology table for the hospital. That cheque was presented by Wes Libbey, the oldest member of

Kinsmen Cornwall and a prostate cancer survivor. The Kinettes presented the hospital with their annual $1,000 donation. “The things you have done have been nothing short of amazing,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of the CCHF. “It doesn’t matter what campaign we’ve ventured out on, the Kinsmen and Kinettes have always been there to support our goals,” said CCH CEO Jeanette Despatie. Kinsmen Cornwall President Robin McIntosh explained that supporting community services like the hospital represented the best of the Kinsmen motto: Serving the community’s greatest need. Wednesday night, in partnership with the Cornwall Police Service and The Port Theatre, the Kinsmen held a movie night for kids. On Thursday, the Kinsmen and Kinettes were honoured by the City of Cornwall with the Proclamation of Kin Week. The Kinsmen flag was raised at City Hall by Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement.
