Rush Hour Escapes draws visitors from near and far

& AMY MALYON

KEVIN LAJOIE

Rush Hour Escapes is bringing a new world of excitement to Cornwall. Actually, make that two worlds. The popular Downtown Cornwall escape room business is getting set to open two new game rooms to replace the current ones which have entertained hundreds of groups from near and far. The new rooms, Code Red (think control room) and The Expedition (think jungle adventure), are set to open in April. A worldwide phenomenon, escape rooms are about as real-life as a game can get. You and a group of friends are placed in a room and you must work together to solve puzzles and figure out clues to escape before time (60 minutes) runs out. You can ask for hints from the gamemaster, but only a few times. It’s a big business, and Rush Hour’s offerings are on par with what you would find in a bigger centre. Rush Hour has drawn rave

reviews on Google and TripAdvisor thanks to its challenging, realistic and uniquely-detailed game concepts. “About 80 % of the people who have done our rooms needed all three hints (to win),” said Rush Hour owner Colleen Campbell. “We’ve had groups from Ottawa and Montreal tell us we were one of their favourite (escape) rooms. That’s always good to hear.” Mrs. Campbell estimates about half of her customers come from beyond the immediate Cornwall area for the experience. Often times, they will pair it with a visit to one of the nearby restaurants Downtown. “I’ve had groups from all over Canada, some from the United States, even one family from Spain,” she recalls. “One of my customers had done close to 600 escape rooms around the world.” With two brand new rooms on the horizon, it’s a safe bet Rush Hour will be drawing new and returning visitors to Cornwall for the foreseeable future. “The new games are going to be a must-try experience,” Mrs. Campbell said. It’s a perfect time to invite some out-oftown friends or family to try out the departing games, or, to be among the first to book for the new rooms. Book your time at rushhourescapes.ca and head to the red door next to Echo Trends. It’s guaranteed to be a rush!

IT’S A FACT! EMMA MELDRUM CITY OF CORNWALL

I challenge anyone who is feeling a little bored to wander over to calendar.cornwall.ca – the home of the City of Cornwall’s community calendar. There’s always a full slate of activities and events on our website, but I’m drawing it to your attention now because March Break is coming up. The kids are going to need entertaining, and luckily, local organizations are up to the task. The City alone is hosting six separate activities, from Zumba to drumming circles to Nerf Gun battles. Throw in the Cornwall Public Library’s activities, the skating and swimming sessions planned at the Aquatic Centre and Benson Centre, and March Break camps planned by private organizations, and you have oodles of choices for entertainment all week long.

Plus, you’re not going to want to miss a special event coming to the Civic Complex at the end of the month. The Harlem Globetrotters will entertain your family with their mesmerizing basketball skills. Visit ticketpro.ca or the Civic Complex to buy your tickets. Our definitions of fun may differ, but stick with me here – we also have public consultations coming up! The Social & Housing Services Department is conducting a study about housing revitalization. An in-person session is planned for Thursday, March 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Benson Centre’s MacEwen Room. The end goal is to create a long-term strategic plan that provides clear and achievable strategies to meet current and future demand for social and affordable housing, not only in Cornwall, but also in Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry. Everyone is welcome to attend that session. Residents should also keep the Comprehensive Zoning By-law Review in mind. The first public engagement opportunity occurred last month, but we’ll have several more over the course of the year. Keep up with the action by following www.Cornwall.ca/ zoningreview. Life is what you make it, and you’ll find lots to do if you know where to look.

Demystifying “Posture”

MOVEMENT MATTERS NATASHA INGRAM

Have you ever been told that your neck, back or shoulder pain was a result of your posture? There was a time where this was believed to be true, and that pain could be eliminated by forcing one’s body to maintain a perfect, erect posture . Times have changed. An abundance of research has revealed that having the perfect posture will NOT decrease your pain or chance of injury. Researchers are proving that sitting up in a straight posture actually leads to more strain on your spine and associated ligaments. The answer to this over publicized subject is this - our body needs continuous changes in positioning and posture to allow our joints to be lubricated and continue to function at their optimal capacity. No matter what position we stay in, the fact that we are staying in the same position for a prolonged period of time increasesinjury risk. Think of your joints as sponges. A sponge needs to be squeezed to absorb liquid in order to use it for washing. Your joints need

to bend (squeeze) to absorb fluid for lubrication in order to move freely. Maybe the real reason you have back, neck or shoulder pain is because you type, use a mouse and look at a screen for multiple hours a day without taking a break. Try getting up and doing a backwards bend and a deep squat every 15 minutes. Stretch your legs out and walk to the doorway, grab it on both sides and use it to stretch your shoulders back. Does your boss have a problem with you taking a 2 minute break to stretch? Let them know that short breaks increase productivity and creativity and that working for long stretches without breaks leads to stress, strain and exhaustion. Our bodies need to take breaks to lubricate our joints, bring blood flow to our muscles, replenish our mind and mental resources in order to work more efficiently. Research shows that stepping away from a task allows you to clear your mind, refocus your thoughts, to laugh, and to decompress. It is not about having that perfect, neutral posture during activities of daily living - it’s about not staying in the same posture for too long. If you need more tips on how to change your posture throughout your day, please contact me. If you like what you see here and have topics that you want to see covered relating to physical health and wellness, feel free to email me at Natasha@movetherapeutics.ca

CORNWALL, Ontario – TASTE TOUR: Grilled Cheese Edition kicked off with excitement on Thursday, March 5. Eight local restaurants are competing to see who can create the most delicious of comfort foods, all while also supporting a good cause. Running from March 5 to March 14, each participating restaurant will be donating $1 from each grilled cheese sold to Beyond 21. The Hub for Beyond 21 is a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting adults with special needs. The eight participants are Lancaster Pizzeria, Cold Platter Catering, Simply Jennifer, Schnitzels European Flavours, Lola’s Pub and Grub, the King George Restaurant, Brunch on Pitt, and the Birchwood Café. “Beyond 21 is thrilled to partner with the Seaway News Taste Tour 2020 – Grilled Cheese Edition,” said Beyond 21 Executive Director Jane McLaren. “Nothing says ‘home’ like good home cooking and grilled cheese is the classic winter comfort food. Not only will you get some great home cooking, but you will also be supporting adults with disabilities

helping them to gain skills for community involvement.” Carson Killham of the Birchwood Café is grilling up the Peachy Pig, which features sourdough bread, herb roasted porchetta, peach chutney, aged cheddar, and mozzarella cheese. Killham said that on day one he already had 32 people try his cheesy creation, with some customers saying it was their first time at his café and that they had come specifically to try his sandwich. “It is nice to have the community of restaurants come together to support a good cause,” he said. Over in Lancaster, Adam Kluver of Lancaster Pizzeria is aiming to get the coveted People’s Choice Award with his sandwich, the Local Hero. “All of the ingredients come from local sources,” explained Kluver. “That is why it is called the Local Hero.” The Local Hero is a combination of fresh home-made bread and thick-cut bacon from Henderson’s Grocer, Glengarry Fine Cheese & Jambal jerk aioli. Share your experience with TASTE TOUR: Grilled Cheese Edition through TASTE the Seaway’s Instagram and Facebook page @TASTEtheSeaway.

Volunteers always in high demand Volunteers are always in high demand, and they are how Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District and our Littles thrive. We rely on our volunteers to be able to reach as many children and youth in our community as we can. We are very lucky and blessed to have some of the best volunteers within our agency. Last month I talked about our one to one programming that matches a volunteer with a child or youth on our waitlist and they spend 2-4 hours a week together for a minimum of a year. This month I’d like to shine some light on our Big for a Day program. The Big for a Day program works very much like the one to one match but is ideal for the volunteer who wouldn’t have the time to commit to the once a week for 2-4 hours for the year. Our Big for a Day volunteers take children who are on the waitlist on either our monthly agency outings or to an event they’d like to bring a child too. This program gives the children waiting an

opportunity to get out while having that one on one time with a caring adult. The wait time for girls on the waitlist can be 6 months to a year, and for boys a year and a half to 2 years. Unfortunately due to with the demand for volunteers it can sometimes be longer. We currently have over 150 children in our district waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. Sunset Cove is hands down one of the area’s best-kept secrets for senior living. Affordable retirement living in one of the most beautiful settings in South Stormont. With deep roots here in Long Sault, many may recognize Sunset Cove as the former Long Sault Villa. In 2017, there was a stunning addition and renovation completed which launched a beautiful new residence now known as Sunset Cove. There are more than 10 retirement communities in Cornwall and another 5-6 in the surrounding area. Needless to say, SD&G seniors have much choice when it comes to independent & assisted living retirement residences. Sunset Cove is a boutique residence ce with only 66 suites compared to the average retirement community being 100-200 suites. "We really develop family-like relationships with our residents and their families. The residents do not get lost in the shuffle and we notice if care needs or quality of life has changed." says Stephanie Richards, Community Relations Manager. At Sunset Cove there are supportive and caring staff onsite 24/7. Each suite has an emergency call system for peace of mind and should the residents require assistance there is a staff member trained and available to help. The aging in place concept allows independent seniors to enjoy simply the comforts of great meals, companionship, and ultimately home maintenance-free living; with the peace of mind that should they require extra comfort, care, or support in the future, our team is here and available to help including assistance with meals, transfers, and other physical or cognitive needs. Sunset Cove is surprisingly affordable, with a range of prices and options, they can offer a small private suite starting at $1650 or short stays from $75 per day. With optional assisted living packages and care plans customized to meet your individual needs. For some considering a move to a retirement community, we would like to invite you to come for a trial stay in one of our furnished new suites. CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Police Services Board applauded the efforts of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS) for their handling of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) quarantine at the Nav Centre. At their meeting on Thursday, March 5, the Board heard a presentation from S/Sgt. George Knezevic during which he explained CPS’ involvement in the COVID-19 quarantine at the Nav Centre. On Feb. 22, 129 Canadian passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan were brought to the Nav Centre in Cornwall for a precautionary 14 day quarantine. The Diamond Princess had experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 with hundreds of passengers infected. All of the repatriated Canadians were screened for COVID-19 prior to leaving Japan, and again once they arrived in Canada. The quarantine is scheduled to end on Friday, March 6 and thus far, none of the patients have tested positive for COVID-19. The role of the CPS during the course of the quarantine was to enforce all federal and provincial statues within the quarantine zone, enforce the Quarantine Act, and ensure public safety. Officers who entered the quarantine zone were given N95 face masks, protective goggles and nitrile gloves, Officers also sanitized their hands with hand sanitizer upon entering and leaving the quarantine zone, on top of other decontamination procedures. Knezevic explained that there was only one instance when the CPS were asked to intervene in a situation involving a patient under quarantine. Upon the arrival of the Diamond Princess passengers, one 60-year-old man refused to get off the bus and wear a protective mask. CPS were called in, but by the time they entered the quarantine zone, the

S/Sgt. George Knezevic demonstrates the protective equipment used by the officers who monitored the COVID-19 quarantine at the Nav Centre during a Police Board meeting on Thursday, March 5, 2020. (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News) individual had accepted the order of compliance and had donned the required mask. The officers left the quarantine zone within five minutes and where then decontaminated. “I think the police department and the City of Cornwall should be commended for what they did on short notice, or no notice,” said Police Board member Bill Beattie. “The job you did was A1.” Health Canada has stated that it will reimburse the CPS for any costs they incurred during the course of the quarantine, which Chief Danny Aikman estimates to be over $50,000. All of the officers who covered the 60, 12 hour shifts during the course of the quarantine were volunteers. All those who worked the quarantine had to be clean shaven in order for the N95 face masks to properly fit, with fellow CPS members shaving in solidarity said Knezevic. Mayor Bernadette Clement said at the Police Board meeting that she hoped to hold a debriefing of the entire experience in order to discuss what can be done in the future if this happens again.

Since 2017, Rurban Brewing has produced a special “Queen’s of…” beer in order to raise funds for local organizations which promote issues that mostly impact women, or where women are generally at a disadvantage. “It was a fun brewing process, it’s actually a lot of heavy lifting…it’s fairly physical…but the end result is always nice,” said Christina Spati. Joining the ranks of past renditions, this year’s Queens of Ruadh is an Irish style red beer. In 2019, the team released Queens of Hops following the success of 2018’s Queens of Eire (which also commemorated St.

Patrick’s Day). “We always brew it in January,” noted Karen Rorabeck, who was working to support the team of women developing this year’s unique, sudsy flavour in anticipation of another early March launch date, to coincide with International Women’s Day. The special beer is now available from the Rurban Brewing tap room on Cumberland street. Funds raised will be dispersed to a number of organizations later in the year. In previous years, funds have gone to a single organization, such as the Agape Centre or Counselling and Disability Services, but as noted by Rorabeck, 2020’s fundraising effort will see more organizations than ever boosted by sales of the special beer. “This year we’ve decided that instead of one large donation we’re going to split it up into smaller donations within the community. We always keep it in the community.”

For the fourth year in a row, Rurban Brewing has worked alongside community members Christina Spati, Bridget Roussy, and Chantal Desnoyers to produce a special brew to commemorate International Women’s Day and support local organizations who work to improve safety and well-being in our community. The brew officially launched on Saturday, March 7, 2020 in Cornwall, ON. (Marc Benoit/ Seaway News)

Help seniors stop scammers NICK SEEBRUCH

This week and next, our Cornwall Police Service (CPS) will be visiting seniors homes to educate them on frauds and scams. Frauds are on the rise, and seniors, one of our most vulnerable populations, are frequent targets and are losing thousands. It is great that the CPS are taking the lead on this to protect seniors within our own community, but each of us have the responsibility to help support and protect the older ones in our lives. Additionally, while seniors are a group that is vulnerable to scammers, it is something that anyone can fall victim to. What I’m saying is that the information that the CPS are providing for seniors is useful to us all in one way or another. I think that one important step that anyone who has been a victim of fraud can take is to come forward. The police say that it is often the case that someone who has been scammed is too embarrassed to come forward. It is understandable to feel embarrassed when we feel that we’ve been tricked, but by coming forward and swallowing our pride, we can prevent this from happening to someone else. Another important measure that we all can take is that if we see something, we say something. Last year, an employee at a local office of a delivery company was helping an older customer who was sending a money order for $10,000. After talking to the customer, the employee learned that the money was being sent as a deposit to release a large cash prize. Being suspicious, the employee contacted the police. When the police arrived, they were able to stop the money order from being sent and recovered the $10,000. The victim in the case was grateful to the police and the employee who helped them. This individual would not have had money to pay for their rent or medications for the rest of the month had the money order been taken by the scammers. Finally, the main piece of advice that the police give when instructing Cornwall residents on how to avoid getting scammed is to slow things down. Scammers will often pressure their victims into making hasty decisions. Tell someone you find suspect that you need to stop and think about it and talk to a family member. Common scams that the police are seeing right now are grandparent scams, where an individual claims to be a grandchild of a potential victim, in trouble and in need of money. In this case, always ask questions, ask other relatives to help verify the story. Another common scam would be a romance scam, where a relationship is initiated, usually over the internet, and the person masquerading as a paramour, will slowly siphon money away from the victim. In romance scams, it is important to be careful, identify any negative patterns of behavior and question the individual’s intentions. It is tax season, and a common scam this time of year is the classic CRA scam, where an individual calls a potential victim, claiming to be from the CRA, stating that a warrant is out for the victim’s arrest and that they will go to jail unless money is sent right away. Again, with the CRA scam, like other scams, slow things down and think about it. For one, the CRA would never call you and secondly, the police would not likely get involved in a case like this. Have you ever dealt with scammers? What do you do when a scammer calls? Email me a Letter to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media

City resident Ron MacMillan knew it was going to be a “unique” experience when the Cuban ambulance driver “rushing” his wife to the hospital from the resort they were staying at pulled over to pick up a hitch-hiker. This sort of thing is not out of the ordinary in Cuba where nobody seems to be in a hurry. The ambulance was called after his wife fell in their room. The overcrowded emergency room, with cobwebs and faded peeling paint, looked like it hadn’t seen a coat of paint since the 1959 revolution that rocketed the island into the Communist orbit. But soon after arriving at the emergency room the window on Cuba’s hushed-up two-tier health care system was unlocked with two magic words: health insurance. His wife was diagnosed with a broken hip and transferred to an upper floor reserved for tourists with health insurance coverage. It is a layer of the socialist country’s free-for-all health-care system regular inhabitants don’t get to see. In Cuba, despite all the propaganda about universal education and health care, (foreign) money talks. The operation was a success and the staff friendly and caring, but even with the upgraded care it became obvious that staff didn’t have a lot to work with. It took four nurses, each on a corner of a blanket, to lift his wife. The hospital did not have a walker. A shower was being sprayed with water. After 11 days, arrangements were made to transport his wife back to Toronto by air ambulance, then by land ambulance to Cornwall. MacMillan was surprised that the total bill submitted to the insurance company by the Cuban health care system was just $8,600 (Canadian).

For a tourist in the Excited States of America in need of hospital care, that would not get he or she past a “hello” at the front door of the ER. THIS WEEK IN 1933 - An Alexandria man convicted of abandoning his family (wife and two young children) and leaving them destitute was slapped with a twoyear penitentiary term. He didn’t help his cause by engaging in a verbal sparing match with the judge. The Crown introduced several love letters the man had sent to a 17-year-old girl. The judge was in the middle of lecturing the scoundrel when he was interrupted by the accused who snapped back, “No harm in writing letters to a friend.” On his way out of the court room he called out to his wife, “If I never see you again it will be too soon.” .... A 32-year-old Toronto salesman who assaulted a Colonial Coach bus driver just east of Morrisburg was declared insane after being examined by four physicians the next day at the Cornwall jail. He was sent to the Ontario Hospital for the Mentally Sick in Brockville. The man was a passenger on the bus when he got out of his seat and hit the driver with an iron bar. The driver was able to keep the bus on the road while other passengers held the man down until the bus pulled into Cornwall. ... Caught in a blinding snow storm and not familiar with the city, the driver of a car with two passengers travelling south on Bedford Street drove across Water Street and into Cornwall Canal. The vehicle broke through the ice and the men inside the car, one in the rear seat, escaped by breaking the side windows.

CORNWALL, Ontario – For the first time ever, the Creation Workshop hosted a Ladies Night event on Saturday, March 7, just ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8. “I have had a lot of requests to host evenings where ladies can get together and just chat and relax and have fun without any kids running around,” said Owner Becky Valade. Valade did not realize that International Women’s Day would fall on the same weekend of her event but feels that it is the perfect

coincidence. She is hoping to continue hosting Ladies’ Nights once every two months, giving local women the opportunity to drop in, mingle and try their hand at painting at a discounted rate. Michelle Sauve, who is new to Cornwall, said that the Creation Workshop is where she first made a cohort of crafty friends, including Angela Flaro; she is grateful for events such as Ladies night to get out and meet new people. “There’s not a lot a whole lot of (organized events) in Cornwall where moms can get out without children,” said Valade.

NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario – St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School’s new location received a formal blessing on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Father John said a few prayers and blessed a new plaque that has been installed at the front of the school. Formerly located on Marlborough St., St. Matthew re-opened this past September at 323 Augustus St., the former St. Columban’s Catholic School. “The government asked us a few years back to review our schools,” said Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) Chair Todd Lalonde. “We had a local principal here who was concerned about

St. Matt’s . . . and the conversation started ‘what can we do for St. Matthew’s.’” Lalonde explained that St. Matt’s was a growing school, and that their new location allows them to better serve the needs of their expanding student population. “You’ll see our culinary class here is stateof-the-art,” Lalonde said, who also explained that the school was providing a hair dressing course, and a wood working shop, in addition to a gymnasium. “It’s endless here. What child does not deserve a gymnasium.” St. Columban’s Catholic School, which formerly occupied the building for 60 years, closed in 2018. The students at that school were moved to the new amalgamated Sacred Heart School, which is located next to St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School on Cumberland Ave. in Cornwall.

Today’s cars, light trucks, and sport utility vehicles are high-tech marvels with digital dashboards, oxygen sensors, electronic computers, unibody construction, and more. They run better, longer, and more efficiently than models of years past. But when it comes to repairs, some things stay the same. Whatever type of repair facility you patronize - dealership, service station, independent garage, specialty shop, or a national franchise - good communication between customer and shop is vital. The following tips should help you along the way. Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs or service. Today’s technician must understand thousands of pages of technical text. Fortunately, your required reading is much less. • Read the owner’s manual to learn about the vehicle’s systems and components. • Follow the recommended service schedules. Keep a log of all repairs and service. Use all of your senses to inspect your car frequently. Check for: • unusual sounds, odours, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings; • changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels; • worn tires, belts, hoses; and

• problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations. Note when the problem occurs. • Is it constant or periodic? • When the vehicle is cold or after the engine has warmed up? • At all speeds? Only under acceleration? During braking? When shifting? • When did the problem first start? Stay involved - ask questions. • Ask as many questions as you need. Do not be embarrassed to request lay definitions.

Shar’s Tip of the Week Your best guide on how to clean a fabric is the care label, which must be sewn into all articles of clothing. If it says dry clean, then only dry clean. If it says hand washing, you have to decide how to wash it. On the supermarket shelves, next to the regular laundry detergents, you’ll find several products that make special claims for laundering fine washables. There is no reason to buy one of the specialized brands of detergents. Use a HAND DISHWASHING LIQUID. All it lacks is the optical brightener that regular detergents contain.

Kinsmen Pizza for Charity Night NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall will be holding their 14th annual Kinsmen Pizza for Charity Night on March 27 at the Best Western in Cornwall. Formerly known as the Kinsmen Pizza Party, it might have a new name, but there will still be the same great pizza. The name is not the only thing that is new though. “The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall has had a pizza party for 14 years and the event has been a success for everyone,” said event Chairman Rick Shaver. “It is time that we give the event a new look as we continue to be raising money for local charities and organizations that require additional funding not available to them from other sources.” The event will feature local pizza, local

entertainment and local celebrities who will help present the cheques. Over 220 people are expected to attend with each being treated to two slices of pizza, bread sticks, French fries, sauce, plus a dessert pizza from Dairy Queen. For those who want their fill of pizza, there will also be a pizza buffet featuring eight local pizzerias. A new twist this year, is that enjoyment of the pizza will be the main focus, and judging of the pizzas will not take place. The silent and live auctions will be returning this year. The silent auction will be done from the back room and place along the south www.eventbrite.com/e/82555276053 To purchase a full eight seat table, select wall. There will be 20 baskets of local gifts, the buying on the map option. as well as two live actions. “Serving the communities greatest need is Tickets are $27.54 and must be purchased online through the following website: https:// an objective of Kinsmen and this event helps

us do that,” said Shaver. For more information or to donate an auction gift, please contact the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall, Kin Rick Shaver -613-933-0014 x7226.

Police helping seniors fight fraud NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Police Service (CPS) are holding educational seminars this week and next and the City’s retirement and long term care residences to help inform seniors about fraud and scammers. The CPS will be visiting Beek Lindsay House, Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge, Sandfield Place, St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, and Riverdale Terrace starting on Monday, March 16. The CPS have already held seminars at Chateau Cornwall. CPS state that they are seeing a wide range of fraud and scams on the rise in the community, with grandparent scams, romance scams, phishing scams and the classic CRA

scam just to name a few. Cst. Dan Cloutier of the CPS says there are a few strategies that he will be sharing with seniors on how to avoid fraud. “Slow things down, talk to somebody,” Cst. Cloutier said. He explained that when it came to things like when it came to the CRA scam, the scammer relies on scare tactics, pressure and a sense of urgency in order to get money from their victim. Cloutier said that slowing things down and thinking about the situation is key to dealing with these scammers. A CRA scam is when someone calls claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency and claims that there is a warrant out for the arrest of he potential victim unless they pay them quickly.

“The CRA would never call you and the police would not arrest you for back taxes,” Cloutier said. “If they CRA wanted to contact you, they would do so through registered mail.” Cloutier explained that it was hard to pin down exactly how many people have been victims of scams because often victims feel too embarrassed to come forward. “Unfortunately, a lot of scams go unreported because the victim feels too embarrassed,” said Cloutier. “We want victims to come forward so we can warn others.” The CPS will also be introducing seniors to internet safety, rules around buying things online, and how to identify fake websites masquerading as real organizations.

A big thank you to Kevin and staff at Baker Heating for service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy customer Brian Goodfellow.

With March Break fast approaching, here are a few suggestions to keep the children occupied while having fun ... • Dinner Theatre: Designate a night as “dinner theatre” and have kids and grown-ups alike dress up in homemade costumes (clothes they can find around the house). To make it educational too, have a theme night and get everyone to dress up like a president, king or historical figure. • Cook For The Night: Once kids are old enough, have them play cook for the night. Let them choose the recipe, shop for the ingredients and cook the meal for the family. Help out when needed but let them do most of the work. • Costume Box: Children love to play “dress-up”. Why not encourage their imagination by creating a “costume box”. Fill this box with outgrown military fatigues, team uniforms, bridesmaid dresses, old Halloween costumes, etc. Garage sale finds also make great fillers for the box.

Four surgeons were talking about the best patients. The first surgeon says, “Accountants are the best to operate on because when you open them up, everything on the inside is numbered.” The second surgeon says, “Nah - librarians are the best. Everything inside them is in alphabetical order.” The third surgeon responds, “Try electricians, man! Everything inside them is color coded!” To which the fourth surgeon, who has been quietly listening to the conversation, says, “I like engineers. Alexandria businesses get $25K nseebruch@seawaynews.com

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario – Two Alexandria businesses are receiving $25,000 each to help them grow. On Friday, March 6, the Cornwall & the Counties Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) and Glengarry-PrescottRussell MP Francis Drouin presented Formax Plastics Inc. and Papeterie Alexandria Stationery / Glengarry Printing each with $25,000 in funding from the Rural Innovation Initiative Eastern Ontario (RIIEO). “On behalf of the CFDC staff and the Board of Directors, I would like to commend Formax Plastics Inc. and Papeterie Alexandria Stationery/Glengarry Printing on the addition of this equipment and the expansions of their businesses,” said Lesley Thompson, Lesley Thompson, Executive Director of Cornwall & The Counties CFDC. “Supporting the transition of traditionally ran business into industry 4.0 was one of the overarching goals of this program. We recognize that this type of innovation is critical to increasing the economic

growth of the region. Their continued investment in their business benefits the community greatly and we are proud to have the opportunity to support their growth.” Both companies will be using the funds to purchase new equipment to make their businesses more efficient and competitive. Formax Plastics Inc. plans on purchasing injection-molding equipment which will reduce the company’s energy footprint and help them move away from plastics. Papeterie Alexandria Stationery / Glengarry Printing will be purchasing equipment which will allow them to do more jobs in-house, reducing wait times for customers as well as reducing waste and saving energy. “Maintaining a competitive edge and keeping ahead of technological innovation can be challenging for small and medium-sized businesses. Today we are happy to report that the Rural Innovation Initiative will be helping two Alexandria businesses invest in new technology,” said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald. “We congratulate both of these businesses and wish them all the best in continuing to grow in North Glengarry.”

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – The Township of South Stormont will benefit from a total of $400,000, or $20,000 every year over the next 20 years from The Barlow Solar Energy Centre. Located on County Rd. 33, just north of Power Dam Dr. and the Cornwall Landfill, the 10 mw solar installation occupies a parcel of land spanning 94 acres. In 2015, the project developers EDF-EN Canada entered into a Community Fund Benefit Agreement with the Township that would commence upon commercial operation of the project. South Stormont received the first payment from the agreement in Nov. of 2019 for $19,506.85. Funds have yet to be distributed according to Mayor Bryan McGillis. “They have an explicit criteria, to do something that benefits the community recreation (with the funds),” explained McGillis. A council document was presented during the Township’s Feb. 12 meeting explaining that funds can be used for community infrastructure and programs such as land stewardship, recreation, protective services,

education, job training, roads, and other activities as approved by Council. This includes… Expenditures relating to energy sustainability (i.e. municipal renewable energy systems; vehicle fleet upgrades; building energy-efficiency upgrades; conservation programs) Land stewardship initiatives (i.e. habitat creation/improvement; tree planting) Expenditures relating to development and construction of Municipal recreational facilities (i.e. arenas, parks, trails) Expenditures for improvement of community and protective services (i.e. police, fire, EMS, healthcare) Expenditures related to education and job training Expenditures for improvements to roads and municipal infrastructure Other community-related activities as directed by the community McGillis said that the Waterfront Committee is going to decide how to move forward with allocating the funds. “(The Waterfront Committee) had a meeting with the St. Lawrence Parks Commission. We have a lot of ideas we want to move forward on with our Master Plan,” said McGillis.
