BYOB (BringYour Own Bubble) safe shopping opportunity NICK SEEBRUCH
@C:nseebruch@seawaynews.media
CORNWALL, Ontario – Several Cornwall businesses are now offering BYOB (Bring Your Own Bubble) hours. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit businesses hard by restricting the number of individuals who can safely be at a store at any given time. The pandemic has also introduced the idea of social bubbles, where people are being
asked to limit their social circle to 10 people, which is the same 10 people as everyone else in that social circle. The BYOB concept allows an individual and up to 10 people in their social bubble to book a time at a participating Cornwall business where they all can go and shop safely. With the holiday shopping season around the corner, this idea will help both businesses and shoppers alike. The idea was offered to Cornwall Tourism and the Cornwall and Area Chamber of
Commerce by Barbara Leduc, of Mrs. B’s Gifts and Home Décor. “We have a lot of customers who have compromised immune systems, and they were afraid to come into the store,” Leduc said. “I think that this is a really good idea for most stores to try, especially at this time of year.” The Cornwall Chamber promoted the idea to all of its members asking them to consider adopting the initiative themselves. “BYOB is a unique shopping experience where you can book a private shopping
session (outside of regular shopping hours) with your social bubble of 1-10 people to avoid crowds and standing in line outside,” reads a newsletter to Chamber members. “It will also offer a safer shopping experience for those suffering underlying health issues that may not feel comfortable shopping alongside strangers.” In addition to Mrs. B’s, other participating Cornwall stores include Life’s Little Pleasures, Laura’s Flowers, Floral Expressions, Flowers Cornwall, Crushed Lane, and Love and Lee.
them feel good with respect and safety in mind,” says Lucille. In looking to the future, Roger shares, “If it is possible, stay in your home. And if you need help to stay home, call Carefor. Try to have these services. When we have these services, we’re alright here.” Huguette and Roger are not the only ones in the community planning on living in their home as long as possible. The Home Care Ontario Study found over 95% of seniors in Ontario believe staying home is the safest environment to live in during the pandemic, and over 93% of seniors in Ontario would choose to stay in their homes with home care services instead of moving to a long term care facility. Carefor’s team of experienced Nurses and PSWs make staying home easier by providing excellent care and companion-
ship to seniors in Eastern Counties. In 2019, PSWs provided over 22,730 hours of care to seniors across Eastern Counties. This number is expected to increase beyond 2020. Help Carefor continue to support seniors at home by making a donation today at carefor.ca/donate.
Staying home and staying healthy PROVIDED BY CAREFOR HOSPICE CORNWALL CORNWALL, Ontario - As the community continues to persevere through the ups and downs of COVID-19, staying safe at home is top of mind for seniors in Eastern Counties. The Bourgon family is thankful in receiving home care services from Carefor for over seven years. Huguette and Roger, now married for 63 years, want to stay in their home as long as possible. Lucille Ferron, a Carefor Personal Support Worker (PSW) makes it possible to do so. Huguette’s mobility made it challenging to do certain activities around the home and looks forward to the time she gets to spend with Lucille. “Lucille is a ray of sunshine. She is always happy and encouraging,” Huguette
shares. Roger also finds comfort in having Lucille help his wife, as he knows she’s being well taken care of and is always mindful of their health and safety. The Bourgon family is very careful with people coming and going from their home. “Lucille asks a lot of questions about the family. We are her first priority. She comes and takes our health seriously and does her job with great care,” Roger shares. PSWs like Lucille do not want to see their clients become ill and take extra precautions to ensure their well-being. “I’ve been doing this for 17 years. I want to see clients stay safe and happy in their home as long as possible. I show them how to safely move in their home and connect them with other services as needed. As soon as I meet with someone for the first time, I do everything I can to make

THE HEART OF COMMUNITY GIVING: OUR SERVICE CLUBS ANDYOU
YOUR CCHF CHECKUP
AMY GILLESPIE CORNWALL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
Whether myth or fact, it’s been said the Inuit have at least 50 words for snow. As Director of our Hospital Foundation, I’ve often wished there were more words to describe how thankful our team is for your support. After four years leading CCHF, I’ve been privileged to have met so many people committed to making this such a giving place. Making a difference doesn’t require personal wealth, power or a special degree – it takes heart, the commitment to show up, and the belief that our community is worth the extra effort. These qualities can be found in spades within the membership of our local Service
Clubs. From our Cornwall Lions Club to our Kinsmen and Kinettes, our Cornwall Legion Branch 297, the Optimist Club, Rotary Clubs across SDG, Club Richelieu du Cornwall, Catholic Women’s League and Knights of Columbus, Army Navy Airforce Club, R.C.A.F. and Kiwanis – these groups have a rich history of community giving, fueled by the passion and determination of their volunteers. I was reminded of this determination a few weeks ago when our team was contacted by the Cornwall Lions Club. Despite the detrimental effect COVID-19 has had on many traditional fundraisers, including the cancellation of their 2020 Lobster Feed, our Lions were keen to continue their pledge towards the purchase of a new cataract microscope. In partnership with our Foundation and donations across the community, this Club’s determination will help strengthen CCH’s cataract program, providing the latest technology to give our patients the gift of sight. On a recent sunny afternoon, some Club members,
the Director of CCH’s Director of Perioperative Services/ Inpatient Surgery and I gathered outside CCH, smiles hidden beneath our masks, to take a photo recognizing the Lions’ $10,000 donation for 2020. Service Club roots run deep in our community, but a new generation of members is needed to continue making positive local change. According to Statistics Canada (2010), just 10 per cent of volunteers accomplish 50 per cent
of all volunteer hours(!) If you’re interested in learning more about these Clubs, and how you can lend a hand, here are some resources to help you make a difference, too. Hector said that George offered the store to him after he decided to retire. With the expansion, they are now able to provide new services in the renovated store and parking in the back to help reduce and ease the flow of traffic on Pitt St. “We gained the shelf room in the expansion so we decided to get into feed and seed and acquired the same supplier that supplied the old Atkinson’s store on Second St,” Hector explained. They will also be adding vegetable seeds, plant seeds and growing options to their product line as well.
“We found there was no high-end bird seed stores in the area and we wanted to get into that market,” said Hector. Hector explained that he was committed to having 90 per cent Canadian goods on the shelves at H. Moise Jr. Feed & Seed. Hector’s wife Shelley-Ann has a passion for crafts, and they’ve made space in the store for crafters to sell their goods. “We have had a lot of local crafters come in wanting to sell their goods, and customers are interested in the store itself because it was Gosselin’s,” he concluded.

Expanding service and carrying a legacy
Something nautical for Seaway News NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM
Since this column is being published in Cornwall Seaway News, I’ll share some of my Seaway ship-watching lore with you. Unfortunately, the immediate Cornwall area lost almost all chances of seeing ships when the Cornwall Canal was filled in during the 1960s. I’ve always been into all sorts of ‘watching’: bird-watching, plane watching and people-watching. Direct involvement in vessels of all types has enriched my knowledge of things that float. We’ve canoed along the United States and Canadian sides of the St. Lawrence, from
Kingston to Cornwall. As we paddle along we share the channels with enormous vessels; we certainly keep a close eye on the freighters and tankers we encounter, often with a “Third Eye” cycling mirror so we can see what’s creeping up behind us. A memorable Seaway trip was aboard the CCGS Radisson, an ice breaker that took me from Beauharnois Lock to the Welland Canal at St. Catharines. My best freighter experience was aboard a Yugolinea freighter, the MV Zvir. It took 14-days to get from Genoa, Italy to Boston. Then there were the crossings of the Atlantic from ports of Florida to the Mediterranean, and a historic voyage through the Panama Canal to Vancouver. Due to restrictions imposed by COVID-19 closure of border crossings and increasing

international travel insurance costs, for now my ship-watching has been limited to seeking out the best vantage points along the shore. According to Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, “To everything there is a season…”. As far as shipping on the St. Lawrence Seaway is concerned, the official window for vessels to make their way up from Beauharnois to Kingston is from March 25 to January 13. Ice conditions are the determining factor. Summer has just left us, but the ship-watching season on the St. Lawrence Seaway is in its prime. My favourite haunt for ship-watching is the Iroquois Lock. Its lift/drop is a mere +/- one foot, compared to the Snell Lock’s impressive 45 feet. Morrisburg’s waterfront area offers a great vantage point for ship-watching, and tasty

ice-cream treats, profits from which support the Lion’s Club mission to beautify the waterfront. A short distance to the west is Mariatown’s Loyalist Park. Further west is the Galop Canal Road. Next, there’s Brockville’s very popular waterfront loop road parking area, and nearby Don’s renowned fish and chips. If you’re a fisherman (please excuse the suffix ‘- man’), you know that everyone has a favourite fishing hole, but they’re reluctant to share it. The same can be said for a certain restaurant, camping site, mushroom-foraging spot and wild garlic picking place. When something becomes too well known, it loses its mystique. So go find your own special place! (However, if you do have a special ship-watching place or story, please share it with me at nuthiltoo@ gmail.com)

What to do about winter NICK SEEBRUCH
8 - Wednesday, October 7, 2020
- Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
Winter is fast approaching and the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us. Businesses of course, have been hit hard by the pandemic. Over the spring and summer, we saw different innovations be introduced to help businesses bring in revenue, even while restrictions were in place, such as limits on individuals in stores and outdoor only dining. Council has thrown around a few ideas in the past on how to support businesses in this troubling time, but a plan needs to be in place now, before winter comes. There are things that the City of Cornwall can do to support businesses during the winter months. Getting people outside is a hard sell sometimes during the winter, but that is exactly why Cornwall City Council and city administration should be focusing on as they plan for the colder months. Over the summer we saw the City of Cornwall undertake new and different placemaking projects like adding colourfully painted picnic tables to the downtown, and allowing restaurants to extend their patios into the streets, and of course adding pop-up shops in front of the Cornwall Square. Placemaking will have to be taken to the next level to bring people into businesses in the downtown. Rochester, Michigan, a town a quarter of the size of Cornwall, goes all out with Christmas lights in their downtown. The committee for the Cornwall Arts and Culture Centre fund could setup and hold art exhibitions outside of the future Art Centre at 159 Pitt St. These exhibitions could have a small outdoor fire for heat, and money could be raised for the Arts and Culture Centre at the same time. While many people will not be interested in sitting outside in a restaurant’s extended patio, temporary huts can be put up outside of the restaurants in those spaces where they can offer hot chocolate, smores, or let their creativity run wild and offer something entirely unique to their establishment. Over the summer we had a very successful outdoor event in the downtown, the Art Walk. Cornwall should have events such as these during the winter months to keep people active and out and around our businesses. If people are given a reason to walk the streets of Cornwall, the businesses on those streets will see a boost to their revenue. These ideas I think could be a boon to all businesses, but I’m worried in particular about restaurants. The restaurant sector is particularly vulnerable, and many restaurants were living on thin margins before the pandemic even began. The city has indoor space, a lot of it, and that’s what restaurants will need the most during the winter. I have seen some local restaurants offer blankets and outdoor heaters to extend the patio season, which are smart initiatives, but there will become a time when eating outdoors is just not attractive. The province has also limited the number of patrons allowed inside restaurants. I’m sure no restaurant owner designed their business plan with using only a fraction of their indoor space in mind. Something that the city can offer restaurants is indoor space. Both the Benson Centre and the Cornwall Civic Complex have been used over the past few months for the United Way’s Emergency Food Hamper program, so we know food can be handled there, so why not offer parts of those spaces to restaurants so they can offer more indoor dining during the winter? The Benson Centre has three ice rinks and a large indoor soccer field. The Complex has the large ice space in the Ed Lumley Arena. These places can be divided up with temporary walls to help ensure proper distancing and give space to possibly even having multiple restaurants indoors. Food trucks can be brought in if existing kitchen facilities are not adequate. My final thoughts are things need to start happening now. This also does not have to be just a city led solution. Cornwall’s service clubs have more than ample experience in putting together great events in Cornwall and I would be eager to see what they could bring to the table to make the city exciting and vibrant during these pandemic times. Well-justified concerns Dear Editor, I read with interest the story regarding well-justified concerns over the re-zoning of lands on the eastern border of Cooper Marsh. I was struck by the statement by Deputy mayor Lyle Warden that “if the developers are following provincial regulations, who are we to put up a roadblock?” Who indeed? The answer is: you are the elected representatives of the people, and it is your duty thus to represent their interests. There are currently 2000 names on a petition (it can be viewed easily on Facebook, on the page, Protect Cooper Marsh) to council to deny the zoning change. Anyone who has lived in Glengarry County for longer than half an hour, not to mention the thousands of visitors and schoolchildren who go there every year, can attest to the importance of Cooper Marsh for preserving fragile wetland species diversity. Further, the re-zoning of marshland and floodplain for commercial and industrial purposes is in direct opposition to the provincial planning act
which stipulates that such areas be preserved against encroachment by those interests. This is part of an alarming trend that is happening along the watershed throughout the length of South Glengarry. Council is using their local power of re-zoning to override the planning act for both private and commercial interests not only in Cooper Marsh, but also Lancaster and the Bainsville Bay area. At a time in the life of this planet when we are scrambling to preserve what is left of wildlife habitat in the face of massive species extinction, and the textbook scientific evidence that points to marshlands being as important as rainforests when it comes to species diversity, it is simply unacceptable for council to abandon their responsibility to their constituents, and allow commercial and industrial development to proceed unopposed. Some random thoughts on the past week. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any crazier in the Excited States of America, it did. Or as they say in Texas, “Who would have thunk it?” Anti-Trump cable television networks were going bonkers because D. Trump’s personal physician didn’t give enough details on the commander-in-chief’s condition while he was bivouacked in the world’s best-known military hospital. Hey, what happened to the “wonder drug” promoted by Trump? The one called hydroxychloroquine. Apparently, the doc should have satisfied them with some of the nitty-gritty. That POTUS had two successful bowel movements and passed gas at least six times since arriving at hospital. The MSNBC and CNN talking heads wailed about the prez’s wacky ride-about to give supporters gathered outside the hospital a thumbs up and went into convulsions over Trump’s staged return to the White House and Mussolini-style balcony photo op. But they were the ones who gave it air time. The White House spiritual team members– made up of right-wing evangelical church leaders appointed by the Trump gang – can get up off their knees now that the prez has made a miraculous recovery. Maybe the prosperity preachers are right, that he is the “chosen one”. Wonder if Donald Trump Jr still thinks the COVID-19 virus is no worse than the flu. That is what he told Trump propaganda minister Sean Hannity of Fox News just five weeks ago. Stay tuned. This can only get zanier. _________________________________
In October 1962, just three years after it went on air, the plug was pulled on Cornwall’s television station, CJSS-TV Channel 8. The new owner, Bushnell Broadcasting Ltd. of Ottawa, announced that the Water Street studio was being closed and programming transferred to Ottawa. All but five of the Cornwall station’s 26 employees would be terminated. The station was launched in 1959 by Montreal businessman Stanley Shenkman who owned CJSS Radio. He purchased the radio station from Thomson Newspapers, owner of The Standard-Freeholder. The station had been known as CKSF and operated out of a building attached to the newspaper office (now a parking lot). Shenkman later sold the station to Canadian Marconi Broadcasting of Montreal and Ottawa-based Bushnell which purchased the Marconi shares. The radio station, with 25 employees, was not part of the TV sale to Bushnell. It was purchased by Tri-Co Broadcasting (Emard family) in 1963. _________________________________ On Oct. 5, 1962 the owner of the city’s ambulance service said that if a better financial arrangement was not worked out by the end of the year he was closing down. Exclusive Ambulance owner Rene Leroux said he was losing money on the service, mostly because it was difficult to collect money owed by persons who had to pay out of pocket. The welfare office covered the bills incurred by its clients and the city police board gave the service an annual grant of $1,000 for transporting traffic accident victims to hospital. He said the grant was not enough. One suggestion was for a system in which the hospitals billed the provincial government for patients who came to the emergency department by ambulance and pass the money along to the privately-owned

setting off the fire alarm Smoke detectors are life-saving devices, but they can also be a source of annoyance if they go off when there isn’t an emergency. Plus, if you have a monitored system, the false alarm might dispatch firefighters to your home. This can compromise public security if a real emergency arises elsewhere. Here are a few steps you can take to reduce the risk of mistakenly setting off a fire alarm at home: • Move smoke detectors away from sources of smoke and steam such as the stove, shower and fireplace. • Opt for photoelectric smoke detectors. They’re less sensitive to steam than ionization smoke alarms. • Activate the delay setting on your detector. This way you’ll have 90 seconds to cancel a false alarm before it alerts first responders. • Make sure everyone in your household knows how the detectors work and what to do if an alarm goes off by accident. • Inspect the smoke detectors in your
home at least twice a year to ensure they work, and replace them every 10 years. Before you cancel a fire alarm, make sure you know why it was triggered. If you notice smoke or flames, evacuate your home and call 911.
Only YOU Can Prevent
Cooking Fires unattended is a leading cause of home fires in Ontario.
Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every storey of your home.
Test them every month.
How do I keep myself and my loved ones safe? • To prevent cooking fires, you must be alert. You will not be alert if you are sleepy, have consumed alcohol, drugs or medicine that makes you drowsy. • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking. If you must leave, turn off the stove. • Keep anything that burns—oven mitts, cooking utensils, dish cloths, paper towels and pot holders— a safe distance from the stove. • Keep a proper-fitting pot lid near the stove when cooking. If a pot catches fire slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove. Do not move the pot until it has cooled completely. • Loose-fitting clothes can come into contact with stove burners and catch fire. Wear short sleeves, tight sleeves or roll them up when cooking.

4 fire-safety measures to implement at home
3 essentials of a
fire-safe kitchen Did you know cooking is a leading cause of residential fires? In response to this alarming fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has chosen the theme Serve up fire safety in the kitchen! for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 4 to 10. Here are three components of a fire-safe kitchen. 1. A watchful eye According to the NFPA, unattended cooking is the number-one cause of kitchen fires. Therefore, you should never leave the kitchen when frying, boiling, grilling or broiling food. If you need to leave the room, even briefly, turn off the burner. While it’s safe to leave food briefly unattended if it’s simmering, baking or roasting, you should check it regularly (set a timer to remind you) and never leave the house. 2. A clean space To reduce the likelihood of a kitchen fire
igniting, make sure your cooking area is free of clutter. This includes keeping flammable items like oven mitts, wooden utensils and food wrappers away from the stovetop. You should also avoid wearing loose clothing when you cook. Remember to clean food and grease from the stovetop and oven after each use. 3. A nearby lid The most effective way to put out a small grease fire is to carefully slide a lid over the pot or pan and turn off the burner. Never use a portable fire extinguisher to put out a grease fire. Similarly, in the event of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed until the appliance cools.

4. Keep exits clear Exits should be free of obstructions at all times. In the winter, make sure snow is promptly cleared away from doors and ground-floor windows, and that none of these exits are frozen shut. Additionally, make sure furniture and other objects don’t block escape routes. These simple steps can help keep you and your family safe in the event of a fire.

A fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you with just a few minutes to safely evacuate. This means every member of your household needs to be prepared to act quickly in an emergency. If you haven’t done so already, here are four things you should do to protect your family. 1. Install an alarm system You should have at least one smoke alarm and one carbon monoxide detector on each floor of your home, as well as near the bedrooms. Regularly make sure they function by holding down the test button until the alarm goes off. Always keep extra batteries in the house. 2. Buy a portable extinguisher Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher on hand to quickly put out small fires before they cause extensive damage. Install it in a visible location out of the reach of children, ideally on a wall near an exit. Additionally, make sure you know how to use it. 3. Create an evacuation plan Draw a floorplan of your home that clearly identifies possible exits, escape routes and a meeting point. This diagram should also note the location of fire extinguishers and alarms around the house. Conduct a fire drill at least once a year to ensure everyone can evacuate your home within three minutes.

LE BSEO est d’accord avec le resserrement des mesures de santé publique de la Province COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE DE LE BSEO
14 - www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Cornwall Express - Le mercredi 7 octobre, 2020
BEDINGFIELD, Robert Wesley Lane Age 90, passed away peacefully at Woodland Villa, Long Sault, on Wednesday, September 30, 2020. Robert was born in Massena, New York on September 2, 1930. Robert is predeceased by his beloved wife Frances Bedingfield (née Healy) of Montréal, whom he married on April 23, 1952. Remembered by his sons Stephen (Lynn) of Yellowknife, John (Corinna) of Ingleside, and Stuart (Dot) of Mountain, and seven grandchildren: Patrick, Raván, Jordan, Dustin, Stephanie, Samantha, Chelsea, and several greatgrandchildren. Predeceased by his parents Wesley & Verna (Lane) Bedingfield, he will be remembered by his sister Shirley Wells. Robert (Bob) will be long remembered for his love of sports, in particular hockey, golfing, and curling, and his sense of sportsmanship and fair play. In his work the name Bob Bedingfield was synonymous with the Standard-Freeholder where he had a long career in advertising. Perhaps more than anything else, Bob will be remembered for his cheerful nature, good humour, and his quiet services to the community and those in need. A private funeral service will be held prior to interment. The family welcomes contributions to the Lost Villages Historical Society ( https://lostvillages.ca ) in loving memory of Robert Bedingfield. 275761

She will be laid to rest with her husband and son at St. Andrew’s Cemetery, St. Andrews West, Ontario. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall (613-938-3888). Online messages of condolence may be made in the obituary section of www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca. Charitable donations in memory of Norma to the Alzheimer’s Society, Cornwall or to Woodland Villa, Long Sault would be greatly appreciated.

What is going on with the cats? $40,000 to spay & neuter feral cats. $5,100 to get a mobile hospital unit from Kingston leaving $34,900 for the operations. Now, city wants to pay for up to 5 cats, for all low income people. Where is the money for this coming from? Poor taxpayers. What’s next?
Effective October 15, 2020 Walmart Canada will no longer price match. This is apparently due to the minimal usage of the ad match program and the delays at the checkout. Just wondering . . . how many delays can there be if people aren’t participating. This message seems contradictory to me.
What will you be doing for Thanksgiving? Will you meet with relatives, or is it too risky. According to Ryan Imgrund, Hospital Biostatistician & Department Head of Science at South Lake Regional Health Centre, the chances of someone at an event of 25 people in the Eastern Ontario region being positive for COVID is better than 1 in 4.
The COVID-19 assessment centre at the Cornwall Community Hospital has extended its hours. The assessment centre will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. ASSESSMENTS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. To book an appointment please call 343-475-0160.
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. In this difficult times of the pandemic and the chaos south of the border, remember to take time to care for your mental health. Mental Health services are available through the Cornwall Community Hospital and those in crisis should always call the Crisis Line at 1-866-996-0991.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening at church service when she was startled by an intruder. As she caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables, she yelled, “STOP! ACTS 2:38!” (Repent and be baptized, in the name of the lord, so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar, “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell scripPhoto from Chantal Quenneville shows her son with Team Canada at the Tim Horton Brier in Ottawa. Do you have a photo with a famous athlete you’d like to share? Email ture at you.” “SCRIPTURE?!” replied the burglar, “She said it to nseebruch@seawaynews.media for a chance to win a $25 gift certificate to Bosshe had an AXE and TWO 38’s! ton Pizza. It is with great pleasure that we announce the promotion of Vanessa Leclerc to Director Of Care at Heritage Heights. Reader says: I want to give a shout out to the Fresh Co. Cashier from the Number One Cash that was very friendly and very helpful to me. On September 30th in the afternoon she went beyond the call of duty by helping me bag my groceries and fill up my personal cart. I did not get her name but I hope she reads this. This gesture of kindness really brighten up my day! A Big Thank you! Reader says: Just to let everyone in the SD&G counties know that they need to wear a mask when in stores. In the last week alone, I’ve seen old people as well as young people walking around Baxtroms and Food Basics without a mask. Store owners need to enforce the mask/distancing rules. Smarten up everyone; and you wonder why cases are jumping up every day. Has anyone noticed that on any given day the number of cars parked in the two commuter parking lots (Cornwall Centre Rd & Brookdale and Hwy 138) does not exceed twelve vehicles? This is a very costly “solution” to decreasing the traffic on Hwy 138. The money would have been better spent by extending Brookdale Avenue through to Bonville to add an alternate route to Hwy 138 to handle the traffic to Ottawa.
October is a big month for Cornwall We are about to celebrate Thanksgiving in a unique way. With the restrictions on gathering sizes, we will likely miss out on the typical extended family Thanksgiving dinners. I hope you find safe ways to hold your loved ones close – whether that’s through virtual events, drive-bys, or smaller gatherings with folks inside your bubble. The City of Cornwall is celebrating several big weeks in October! Find out how you can get involved: Fire Prevention Week is October 4 to 10. This year’s theme is Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen. I am so excited about the educational materials the team has prepared for you and your family. With Thanksgiving around the corner, there has never been a better time to improve your kitchen safety habits. Learn more at www.Cornwall.ca/safecooking. Local Government Week is October 11 to 17. The City of Cornwall’s team – councillors, staff, and volunteers – strive to provide quality municipal services and support a caring community.
