It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
IT’S A FACT! EMMA MELDRUM CITY OF CORNWALL
Well, actually… it’s not. But it is time to start thinking about it, because the Mayor’s first-ever Christmas Card Contest is underway! Christmas Card submissions should be 5 inches tall by 5 inches wide, and should of course include holiday themes. Submit your drawing before November 2 by emailing feedback@ cornwall.ca or mailing to Mayor Clement, PO Box 877, Cornwall ON, K6H 5T9. The Mayor’s favourites will be featured on her Christmas cards this year – and winning artists will receive a gift card to the local business of their choice. Let the young artist in your life know about this contest, or learn more at www.Cornwall.ca/art. Cornwall Fire Services is also running a colouring contest for Fire Prevention Week. This
one is for Fire Prevention Week, and asks young people to find 8 kitchen fire hazards. You can find the sheet at www.Cornwall.ca/ safecooking. You can finish up your fall cleaning by donating used clothing, linens and footwear during Waste Reduction Week. This event is called Cornwall Gives A Shirt, and has previously helped us divert over 7,000 pounds of textile waste from the landfill! Be sure to mark your bags with “Cornwall Gives A Shirt” and set them out on your regular collection day October 19 to 23. City staff will collect the bags and bring them to one of three local partner thrift stores. Cornwall SDG Paramedics will be participating in a virtual event this coming Sunday. Cornwall and area will be celebrating the International Day of the Girl with a fun virtual event. Register yourself – or your daughter, niece, sister, or granddaughter – at www. Cornwall.ca/girlsday. Finally, remember that municipal offices are closed on Monday, October 12 for Thanksgiving. Please enjoy this holiday safely, and check the Eastern Ontario Health Unit’s website for the most recent news.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Oct. 4 to Oct. 10 is Mental Health Awareness Week, and as they have for the past 17 years, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Champlain East, held an event to help teach the community about the importance of mental health. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the CMHA organized a drive-by parade of cars decorated in honour of Mental Health Awareness Week. There were 17 cars that left the parking lot of the Cornwall Civic Complex on Wednesday morning and the parade was guided by members of the Cornwall Police Service and the Cornwall Fire Service. “Honestly I think we might be starting a new tradition,” said Angele D’Alessio, Mental Health Promoter with the CMHA. “Maybe in the future we will change the route to reach more people.” The parade passed by various mental health services in Cornwall, and CCVS high school. “We are huge supporters,” said Laurie

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Cornwall Express - Le mercredi 14 octobre, 2020

Every passing day is one day closer to the pandemic being over. Even after COVID19 becomes a thing of the past however, the memory will still be with us. Do you remember what you did during the Great Ice Storm of ’98? How about 9/11? Do you remember where you were that day? Every time there is a big global event of historical importance, those of us who lived through it ask each other things like where were you? And, what did you do? I still have these conversations annually about both of those events I mentioned above. I saw an old historical poster the other day from World War I. In it, young children are asking their father “Dad, what did you do during the Great War?” The father looks at the viewer pensively, leading the viewer to question if they did their part, or stood on the sidelines. The COVID-19 pandemic is a global shared experience, but when future generations ask you what you did during it, and if you did your part, will you be able to answer? This weekend for the first time, I didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving with my whole family. In 30 years, nothing kept my family from coming together to enjoy some turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie, but this year, we chose not to because of the
COVID-19 pandemic. There is no rule in place saying that we could not have a family get together, but Public Health officials advised against it stating that it could lead to further outbreaks and put loved ones at risk. Of course, I’m disappointed at not seeing family on this holiday, but I believe the Public Health officials. I believe them when they say that their advice will save lives, and save businesses by ending the pandemic sooner. The sooner we stop the spread of the pandemic, the sooner everything goes back to normal. I don’t follow the guidance of Public Health officials blindly. I follow the guidance of these doctors because they have spent their lives studying in the field and I have not. I believe that they are doing their best to keep everyone safe and healthy because that is what they are employed to do and what they have been sworn to do. I saw a comment on one of our social media posts this week stating that facemasks cause cancer. I also saw several comments about the EOHU and Medical Officer of Health Dr. Paul Roumeliotis saying that they have no idea what they are doing and are doing harm to the public. I am so tired of seeing this “stuff.” I use the word “stuff” because the language I would like to use is not appropriate for all readers. Do those who make these comments really think that public health doctors around the world are all involved in some

I hope last week’s introduction to ship-watching piqued your interest enough to take you to some place along the St. Lawrence, or anywhere along the Great Lakes. Maybe it has even prompted you to make plans to explore further along the Seaway – or, as soon as the COVID-19 problems are resolved, to the Panama Canal or the Straits of Gibraltar. There are three limiting factors that determine which vessels can be accommodated by the Seaway locks. Some size stats: they must be no longer than 740’,
beam must not be in excess of 78’ and keel goes no deeper than 27’. The next time you take a drive westward toward Long Sault, take a good look at the recently upgraded and repurposed Laframboise building. It’s not only beautiful, it’s big, really big: 500’ long and 85’ wide. That’s wide enough for the Seawaymax class of freighters operated by Algoma Central and Canada Steamship Lines. However, a look at the St. Lawrence Locks specifications and doing a bit of subtraction tells you that 240’ of ship’s length would be sticking out. Ocean-going vessels that ply the Seaway are usually close to being as wide as the locks, but the demands of seaworthiness dictate that they are typically shorter, about 450600’ in length.
sort of conspiracy to harm us and take our freedom. The arrogance of these people thinking that their cherry-picked research somehow makes them more qualified to weigh in on how to fight this pandemic than these doctors with years of training and experience. All doctors do not agree on how to fight COVID-19, that’s true, but we should listen to the consensus of these experts. Also, doctors are not always going to be right about this virus. COVID-19 is a brand-new virus that did not exist in the human population even a year ago, but if anyone has a chance of effectively combating it, it is trained public health officials. We as the public do have a role to play in shaping the response to the pandemic however. Readers want us, journalists in
the media, to keep the experts accountable. If Dr. Roumeliotis decides to move the region back to Stage Two of the COVID recovery plan, which would result in the closure of some businesses, we absolutely should ask him if this action is appropriate, and offer alternatives. If Dr. Roumeliotis’ decisions are in-line with the consensus of the community of experts, then we should abide by it. Will it be possible that some of the medical community’s decisions might be wrong, yes, but they have a better chance of being right than most of us. For the pandemic to end, it will take effort from everyone. Will you be able to tell future generations that you did your part? Have an opinion you would like to share? Write me a Letter to the Editor and send it to nseebruch@seawaynews.media
How about trying to slip one of the Royal Caribbean’s largest cruise ships, the Allure of the Seas or the Oasis of the Seas through our Seaway locks? No go! They are 441’ longer than our lakers and 681’ longer than the Laframboise building. Here’s a comparison for you CFL football fans: a laker is 290’ longer than a playing field. Parking a Boeing 747-400 on the field, no problem: 117’ of length to spare, but its 210’ wingspan would overhang almost 17’ on each side. Could a 747 land on a CFL field? Sure – as long as a steady 200 mph headwind was facing the nose of the plane. Could the CFL could provide enough fields, placed end to end, for that 747 to take off? Yes, as long as 14 additional franchises joined the present nine. Here’s one more length factoid to held
you appreciate the size of Seawaymax vessels. A typical Honda or Toyota sedan is about 15’ long. Simple mathematics tells us that 33 of them could be parked end to end and 14 rows of cars could be parked withing those dimensions. Does that mean that 462 cars could be parked in that space – yes, but only if the drivers got out of their vehicles through the sunroof. Now you know how big is ‘big’. This week’s column has set a new record for mathematical computations. Happy ship-watching! By the way, if you are my grade XIII math teacher, the one who gave me a 51% ‘pass’ just to avoid having to teach me again the following year, I ask: how was my math this week?

OPINION
Turning back the clock on wards debate EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM
To have or not to have a ward system? That was the question city council was wrestling with back in October 1964. Has a familiar ring, doesn’t it. Leading the campaign to replace the ward system with elections-at-large was Ald. Gerald Parisien who wanted the question put on the election ballot scheduled for December. “Let the people decide – yes or no?” Parisien urged his colleagues. Ald. Larry Keen wondered why it was such a “hot” issue. “Who is asking for it?” asked Keen. “Not one resident in my six years on council has asked to have it put on the ballot.” . Things got so heated that at one point Mayor Nick Kaneb told Parisien to “shut up” and “sit down.” The issue was put to bed when council voted 9-3 to stay with the status quo and not put the question on the December ballot. The six-ward system was created in 1957 after the city annexed a large part
fire station on Pitt Street needed to be replaced, but not everyone agreed where it should be built and if it should be part of a complex that included a new police station and new court house. The proposal was to build the fire station on Sixth Street just east of Pitt Street as a Centennial Project (with a grant from the provincial and federal governments) then add the police headquarters and court house as more money became available. Some members of council argued that the complex should be built in the downtown area. Even the local law society weighed in. The society said it had no argument with the police and fire stations on Sixth Street but said the court house at the proposed site was “too far from the centre of the city.” Not mentioned was the fact that most of law offices were an easy stroll to a downtown court house. The lawyers also opposed having the courts and police in the same building. In the end, the new station was built on Fourth Street next to city hall and the police and courts found themselves in a new building called the “Justice Building”. TRIVIA This member of the 1972 Memorial Cup winning Cornwall Royals was elected mayor of Port Hope, Ont. in 1994. He was the first pick (by New York
of Cornwall Township. The ward system dated back to 1834 with three wards and was increased to four in 1945. But the issue was brought back to life in 1970 and this time council voted to put the question – ward system vs electionsat-large – on the December 1971 ballot. This was the election that saw Ed Lumley win a landslide victory and become the city’s young mayor. Voters favoured elections-at-large – by a 2,000-vote majority - which came into effect in the 1974 election. Gerald Parisien who had campaigned for elections at large in 1964 became the first mayor to serve in the elections-at-large system. Several members of council claimed that the wording on the ballot was misleading. Ald. Angelo Lebano called for the result to be set aside until the next election when the “proper” wording could be used. But Ald. Doug Fawthrop, council’s constant voice of common sense, pointed out that council had the opportunity to review the wording before the ballots were printed and raise any concerns. Fawthrop said that while he would have preferred keeping the ward system, he would accept the result and move on. In October 1964 everyone around the city council table agreed that the ancient

Second oldest parish is St. Raphael’s. It was established in 1802. After a Green Valley area couple called Alexandria physician Dr. D. J. Dolan on Oct. 16, 1964 concerned about their daughter, Cpl. Bernard Polnicky and Const. Thomas Hargreaves were directed to a nearby farm where the family of the daughter’s boyfriend lived. In the back seat of a car parked in the barn the two police officers discovered a newly-born baby, just hours old, wrapped in newspapers and placed in a cardboard box. The 13-year-old girl had given birth to the baby in a field behind the barn without medical assistance. She along with her 15-year-old boyfriend placed the baby in the box. The young mother and baby were transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital in Cornwall were both were found to be in good condition. In a strange twist, police charged the girl’s parents with abandoning a child (the daughter) under the age of 14.

4. Check your wipers. Ensure that your wiper blades are in good condition and are not scratching the windshield. Fill up your windshield washer fluid reservoir and remember to keep an extra jug in the car; it will come in handy for long road trips.
Cold weather and icy conditions can make winter driving difficult. That is why it is so important to properly prepare your vehicle in anticipation of freezing temperatures and the first snowfalls. Here are 10 steps to follow so that your car is ready for the challenges of winter.
5. Check the heating system. Ensure that the heater and rear window defroster are both operating properly in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
1. Change your tires. Winter tires provide better traction on snow and ice and the rubber is more effective in cold weather. Be sure to have them put on as soon as the weather starts getting colder; don’t wait for the first real snowstorm to do it.
6. Inspect your battery. Ensure that the termi nals and battery cables are clean and free of corrosion. 7. Check your tire pressure. The air pres sure in your tires can fluctuate in cold weather, so it is important to check it on a regular basis. Don’t forget to check the spare tire as well.
2. Change the oil. Make sure the engine oil you use is suitable for winter use. If it isn’t, change the oil before the weather gets too cold in order to avoid damaging the engine.

YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED AS WELL! Preparing your car for winter is not enough. You also need to think about adapting your driving to winter conditions and bad weather. Stay further back from the vehicle ahead of you and brake earlier when stopping. Slow down more carefully before turning.

10. Be prepared for all eventualities. Consider lubricating your locks so they won’t freeze; be sure to have some lock anti-freeze on hand just in case. Prepare a survival kit to keep in your car in case of breakdown or accident. It should contain a first-aid kit, blanket, warm clothes, food, scissors, flashlight, snow brush, shovel, and booster cables. This kit could save your life.
8. Check the lighting system. Check to ensure that both front and rear lights, as well as turn signals, are working properly. Replace them if necessary.
3. Add antifreeze. The fluid in your radiator should con tain 50 percent water and 50 percent antifreeze. Use a test kit to ensure that this is the case or check with your mechanic.
BOTTOM LINE The problem with maintenance is that we pay money and what we get back is the same thing that we had before. Our car isn’t any more luxurious with a new air filter but we’re stuck paying the bill. Much like insurance, we pay for maintenance because we know that in the end, it will save us a ENGINE lot of money by making our car last longer. Stomp Does your engine sound strange? Does it sound like around and be mad for a minute but then head something has taken up residence in your engine? If out and get all of these car care tips taken care of. it’s bad in the summer it’s going to get worse in the MASSEY PLACE AUTOPRO winter and that’s not the time to break down. Get it checked out now. Also make sure to change all of the - Air Conditioning filters and make sure your oil is new. - Exhausts FUEL For those in a place where winter is quite the - Brakes formidable foe, pour a bottle of fuel deicer in the - Suspensions tank one per month to keep moisture from freezing - Tires in your fuel line. If you have ever had to pay to repair - Tune-ups a frozen fuel line you know that the small expense of a de-icing agent now can save you a lot of money Victor later. 1520 Vincent Massey Dr.,Cornwall 613-932-3111
9. Have your car inspected. Ask a mechanic to check your car’s bra kes, spark plugs, suspension, and steering. A minor defect could be aggravated by winter conditions, which would then entail higher repair costs.

South Dundas teacher recognized by Prime Minister NICK SEEBRUCH
nseebruch@seawaynews.media
MORRISBURG, Ontario – Blair Fitzsimons has a passion for teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). For 15 years, Fitzsimons has unlocked the potential of his students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 and introduced them into the world of science and technology. For his efforts in STEM, the St. Mary-St. Cecilia Catholic School teacher has been recognized with a Certificate of Achievement as a part of the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence in STEM. “It was a tremendous honour and kind of beyond belief,” Fitzsimons told Seaway News. “I’m just really honoured that STEM is being recognized. It is a recognition that STEM can change the lives of kids by unlocking their
potential. Over the course of his career, Fitzsimons has used the resources he has had available to effectively teach STEM to his students. As an example of his dedication, when his school couldn’t provide robots for students to work with, he and his colleagues would act as living robots and navigate a maze based on his students commands. Fitzsimons has brought in over $70,000 in grants for STEM learning. Simple resources such as LEGO blocks have been used by Fitzsimons to develop teaching strategies, and he has developed a website to share these techniques with other students and teachers called One Brick at a Time. His work with LEGOs lead his FIRST LEGO team to actually get a patent for an idea the students developed. His students developed
an an edible alternative to plastic hay-bale twine, solving a pollution problem. His team ranked in the top 20 world wide in the FIRST LEGO competition and they hold a patent with the U.S. patent office. Fitzsimons explained that his teaching strategy focused on student potential and learning with them. “I really think it is the belief that teaching kids what is possible is what is important in STEM,” he said. “There needs to be a willingness to learn along side your student and a Blair Fitzsimons willingness to face messy problems.” For Fitzsimons, students realizing their potential is the most satisfying thing about being a teacher. “For me the most satisfying thing is when a child sees the potential in themselves that helping them to shatter the barriers in their you saw all along,” he said. “It is about mind.”

A woman on the phone to her friend; I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor’s permission to join a fitness club and start exercising…. I decided to take and aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

LAST WEEK’S WINNER WAS CHANTAL QUENNEVILLE
CORNWALL, Ontario – On Friday, Oct. 2, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced changes to the rules around who can be allowed to cross the border. In the first week of September, Canadian Mayors of border towns, including Cornwall’s Bernadette Clement, had a virtual meeting with federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair to raise concerns of their constituents. With their announcement on Oct. 2, the federal government is taking steps to address those concerns by introducing a few new exceptions to be allowed across the Canada-U.S. border. According to the IRCC, extended relatives of Canadian Citizens or permanent residents will be allowed to cross the border into Canada along with those who have been dating a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident for a period of one year. Dependents of Canadian Citizens and permanent residents ACwill also be allowed across; this includes children, as well as adult children, grandchildren, siblings and grandparents. There will also be exceptions for foreign nationals on compassionate grounds such as a life-threatening illness, critical injury or death with a potential for limited release from the 14 day quarantine on a case by case basis.
Let’s
Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement commented that knowing those details will be crucial in determining if these changes are meeting the needs of her constituents. “We have been expecting this news from the federal government, as Minister Blair had announced to the group of border Mayors, that there would be more support for family reunifications in the light of the continuing closure of the border between Canada and the U.S. All mayors expressed much concern for those of their constituents who were suffering the pain of separation from family and loved ones, and most particularly for people who need to be with their families for compassionate reasons,” Mayor Clement said in an email to Seaway News. Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry MP Eric Duncan said that these changes were long overdue. “This policy change to allow families to safely reunite after months apart is long overdue,” he wrote in a statement to Seaway News. “We need to allow these limited number of unique cases to reunite safely. During this pandemic, we rely very much on our families and we should be compassionate where this can be done safely.” In addition to changes on who can cross, the IRCC also announced that public health measures at the border will be increased.

Autographs for Awareness Funds being raised will be going to the Kelly Shires Foundation. The Kelly Shires Foundation is in honour of Kelly Shires, a woman who died to breast cancer in 2004. The foundation supports those fighting breast cancer with things like wigs, prosthetics, transportation to treatments, lodging expenses, hospital parking cost, counseling and more and helped Natasha during her breast cancer battle. This is the first year that Natasha and Brennan have held this event, they said that they originally set a low goal of $500 because they were unsure of the response, but they have been overwhelmed by the support. So far the pair have raised $1,855 and have collected dozens of signatures. “We have been collecting signatures mostly by online request. This way we avoid gathering or crowds and follow the
social distance protocols,” Brennan wrote. “We sanitize the markers after each use. We have had a few local businesses that requested pop ins. Even the Cornwall Police Services reached out wanting to autograph and make a donation.” Natasha and Brennan were sponsored for this fundraiser by Visual Vinyl who wrapped the hood of their car. They say that the response to the fundraiser has been great. “People have been absolutely loving the idea behind Autographs for Awareness. We have had very positive feedback. It is creative and allows others to be creative. Some have signed for others or in memory of,” wrote Brennan. For more information about the Autographs for Awareness fundraiser or to contribute, visit their Facebook page.

Pelvic health concerns: Do you cross your legs to sneeze?
MOVEMENT MATTERS
NATASHA INGRAM MOVE THERAPEUTICS
back to pre-injury state and avoid leakage when coughing or sneezing, or painful intercourse and periods. These conditions are easily treated and once you have the right tools you can prevent any future complications from happening. Specialty physiotherapists will work with you on bladder retraining - going pee on a regular schedule, less often, with less urgency and less accidents. They will discuss bladder irritants, the bladder’s capacity to grow and the relationship our pelvic floor has with its ability to retain more urine and avoid leakage. Visiting with a physiotherapist who specializes in pelvic floor therapy can be done at any age and any stage. The sooner women start to work on these issues, the less problems they will run into. As a registered pelvic floor physiotherapist, I have the opportunity to network and
work with Cornwall and SD&G’s absolutely amazing group of OBGYNs, midwives and naturopathic doctors in order to serve the area as best I can and empower women to take part in their own rehab goals to live a more active, confident and healthier life through conservative management. If you have any questions or concerns related to pelvic floor rehabilitation at any stage in life, please do not hesitate in contacting me to discuss further at Natasha@movetherapeutics.ca. You are not alone, and we are all in this together. Treatment is made comfortable and interactive. Help us spread the word that women can seek help and guidance for the aforementioned issues to improve their own quality of life.
CELEBRATING
Pelvic floor issues are extremely common in women and rarely talked about. So many women I see are unaware of the treatments available to them and have been suffering in silence for years. For all you women who have experienced or are experiencing this - it is common but NOT normal. Real news - most women have pelvic floor-related health issues such as
prolapse, urinary or fecal leakage (incontinence), painful intercourse, painful periods, constipation, and pregnancy-related pelvic or low back pain. Pelvic floor physiotherapy has been established as a first-line defence strategy. Some people think strictly performing kegels is the answer but this brings forth 2 major problems - 1) how do you know you are doing a kegel properly if no one has ever shown you; and 2) kegels are not always the answer. In fact, most postpartum women need strategies such as desensitization and pelvic floor lengthening before they can start working on strengthening. After giving birth, the muscle integrity of women’s abdominal wall and pelvic floor changes drastically. Just like any other injury, we should be rehabilitating this area to bring it
