ANALYSIS:

What happens next for Cornwall Council NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall City Council has a few decisions ahead of it after it was announced yesterday, June 22, that former Mayor Bernadette Clement would be resigning her position after being appointed to the Senate of Canada. Currently, the City has an Acting Mayor in Councillor Todd Bennett. Cornwall always has one Councillor ready to serve as an Acting Mayor in case the Mayor is sick, can’t attend a meeting or what have you, and that job rotates among all councillors on a month by month basis. This still leaves a vacancy on council. When it comes to filling the job of Mayor, traditionally, Cornwall Council has voted among themselves to fill the position. When Ron Martelle resigned as Mayor in the 1990s Dick Aubry was appointed to replace him.

Seeing as the next municipal election will happen no later than October of 2022, I think that Council will likely vote for a member who has indicated that they will not be seeking re-election. This makes sense. Taking over the job of Mayor most of the way through a term can be a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it is an opportunity to have a job few ever get the chance to serve in, but on the other I think it would make it more difficult to run for re-election as an appointed Mayor. As an appointed Mayor, you would be running for re-election for a job you didn’t win the first time, and being so far into the term, you would also have little time to make it your own. Additionally, I would think that the other councillors around the table would want some one in that job who would not be focused on making a case for re-election. I think that other councillors would want someone who is focused on the business of being

Mayor and not on their future political fortunes in 2022. Once the Mayor’s job is filled, Council will then still have an open seat to address. According to the Municipal Act, if a council seat becomes vacant, a Council must declare that seat to be vacant at their next meeting, they then have 60 days to decide whether to hold a by-election to fill that vacancy, or to appoint someone to fill the seat. If the vacancy occurs within 90 days of the next election, then a council must appoint a replacement. Again, Cornwall Council traditionally fills vacancies through appointments, and they have done so by appointing the next person who won the most votes in the previous election. In the last Council that sat from 20142018 Denis Carr was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Brock Frost who resigned his position. Carr was the next candidate who

received the most votes in the 2014 election, but was shy of getting on Council at that time. Carr once again finds himself in the position of being invited back to the dance floor late in the evening. Carr, again, was the next candidate who received the most votes in the next election without winning a seat, so he is next in line to fill a Council vacancy. An interesting piece of local political trivia is that this is at least the fifth council term to see a vacancy occur, making it a tradition dating back almost 20 years now. As stated above the 2014-2018 Council saw Brock Frost resign his position, the term before that from 2010-2014 then Councillor, and future Mayor, Leslie O’Shaughnessy resigned from Council, and the term before that from 20062010 saw Councillor Guy Leger pass away before the end of the term, and finally during the 2002-2006 term Councillor Huguette Burroughs passed away before the end of that term.

ONTARIO – The province of Ontario will enter Phase Two of their COVID-19 re-opening plan two days early than scheduled on June 30. “Because of the tireless work of our health care heroes, and the record setting success of our vaccine rollout, we are able to move into Step Two ahead of schedule on June 30 with

the support of our public health experts” said Premier Doug Ford. “We are proceeding safely with the re-opening of our province and will continue to work around the clock until the job is done.” The criteria set by the province to enter Phase Two was having 70 per cent of all adults having received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 20 per cent fully

Re-purposed fire truck a savings for the City NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall has found some savings by breathing new life into an old Cornwall Fire Services (CFS) pump truck. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards fire services vehicles must be taken out of service after they reach 20 years of age. The City of Cornwall however, found that the old CFS pump truck had a low number of kilometers on it and that their Municipal Works Department was in need of a new water utility truck. The truck was remodeled inside and out to meet the needs of the Municipal Works department. The roof of the back of the truck was raised and the pump was removed to

create storage space for tools and a place for members of the City’s Water Distribution team to work on the job site. The average cost of replacement for a water utility truck for the Municipal Works department is $240,000 and the conversion of this old CFS pump truck represents a savings of about $150,000. The new water utility truck has all of the capabilities that come standard in the Municipal Works fleet for this type of vehicle including a power generator, hydraulic power pack, and bright lights for at night jobs. Dave Bigelow, the City of Cornwall’s Corporate Fleet Coordinator said that this truck has the added advantage of being more ergonomic than the standard, meaning that work crews can have easy access to much of what they need right on the side of the vehicle.

One-on-one Q&A with Senator Clement NICK SEEBRUCH

nseebruch@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – On Tuesday, June 22, Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement resigned her position with the City upon being appointed to the Senate of Canada. Seaway News sat down with Clement on Tuesday afternoon to discuss her new appointment. Her and Editor Nick Seebruch talked about when she found out about her nomination, what her next steps are, and if she has any advice for her former Council colleagues. The below transcript of the interview has been edited for grammar, brevity, and clarity. Q: How do you feel about today’s announcement being named a new Senator? A: Its very intense. The feelings are, feeling honoured by this trust placed in me. There’s a feeling of joy. There’s a feeling of sadness because my mom passed away in March and I think she would have been proud of me. The sadness is also because of my job as Mayor and having to leave it. I’m not someone who leaves things Nick. I’ve been a lawyer for 30 years right here, and I’m still here. I’ve been a municipal politician for 15 years so for me to leave something is not easy. And so, I’m struggling with that and it is very difficult to have all of these emotions at once. Q: Can you tell us a little about the process of being appointed a Senator. When did you find out? Was it a surprise? A: I applied back in 2016. I applied under that new system that was brought in by Prime Minister Trudeau. You apply, and you’re vetted that way. So, when I applied in 2016, I applied, but I didn’t hear back, but I kept my name on the list. I said, I don’t know, if it happens it happens.

You don’t even really know that you’re being vetted, and I got a call from the Prime Minister literally on Friday. Q: When do you start on the new job? A: There will be orientation, and that will start right away. I already have tons of messages from Senators who want to get to know me because there’s 100 plus of us, there’s not many of us really and we have a lot of work to do together. So, I’m looking forward to having a lot of conversations with Senators over the summer. I’m getting familiar with all of the legislation that is taking place and getting up to speed. Q: Okay, looking at things more locally, you had to leave your job as Mayor of Cornwall, obviously very difficult, for the city, what do you hope happens to Cornwall going forward? What is your hope for the direction Cornwall goes in? A: Cornwall is in good hands. This is a really good Council and have been engaged. I mean anyone who watches council meetings knows that Council is engaged, they’re respectful and supported by an expert administration. So, I feel that Cornwall is in very good hands. I also feel that Cornwall has come through this pandemic stronger. It has been difficult, there have been loses, but the fact that we have been able to get through it supports our confidence in ourselves. So, I feel like I’m not leaving Cornwall because I’m still here, but I feel like Cornwall is on a great path moving forward. Having survived the closure of Domtar, having redefined itself over the last 15 years, having now survived a pandemic; there is so much more confidence in ourselves as a community. I feel it and I’m sure other people feel it too. The project with Akwesasne is going to also take us into a

Is a new ride in YOUR future?

direction that will give us confidence. Its going to be hard, but we’re not afraid of hard things in Cornwall. I feel like I’m not leaving Cornwall because, I chose it 30 years ago, it chose me back, and everything I learned how to do I learned here. I learned how to be a lawyer here. I learned how to be an advocate. I learned how to be a volunteer. I learned how to be a municipal politician. Everything I’ve learned in my career, I’ve learned here. So, I’m never going to leave Cornwall, and Cornwall is never going to leave me. Q: In terms of your physical living arrangements, will you be living in Ottawa, or will you be living here? A: I’m going to live here. I have a house here. I’m not going anywhere. I may have to get some sort of lodging in winter time when the House is sitting. It may be tricky, but no, I’m living here. Q: How about your position here at the Legal Clinic (Executive Director)? What will happen with that? A: There were two things we had to discuss when I became Senator. You have discussions with the Privy Council Office on the technicalities. I had to resign as Mayor, because you cannot sit as Mayor and Senator at the same time. The Municipal Act does not allow that, but you can continue do other things as a Senator, including, potentially practice law. So, I have to now sit with my employer here . . . to see if there’s any way for me to continue some work here. I have a full case load here. I hope to have some time to transition into something more part-time, but I might want to continue a little bit because it is just what’s kept me grounded in this community for 30 years. Practicing law, especially Poverty Law just keeps you in touch with what’s real and I want to keep in touch with

what’s real. Q: As outgoing Mayor, is there any advice you’d give? Council has some serious decisions to make at their next meeting about who will be next Mayor, how they want to fill that position. In a general sense, do you have any advice to Council? A: They have built up a respectful relationship amongst themselves and they need to keep building on that foundation. They listen to each another during meetings in a way that I have always found encouraging and they need to keep doing that. It is going to be tricky for them to fill the seat and to work through this, but I have confidence in them because I think the city is in good hands with this council. Q: So, my last question, you said you’d still be living here, but will we see you around at events? A: Yeah. It is the part of the job I loved the most. That part, I’m not going to be cutting ribbons, I’m not going to get in the way of this Council. I don’t want to do that. They’re going to be new Mayor and Council and I don’t want to get in the way, but for my own personal pleasure of living in this place, yeah, I’m going to be around and I’m going to be participating.

Here’s how you can tell: • You can press down on the pedals using your entire foot, heel to toe • Your elbows are slightly bent when you grip the steering wheel • There’s three to six centimetres of space between the back of your knees and the front of your seat • Your thighs and back are fully supported by the seat and backrest If you find you need more lumbar support, place a cushion behind the small of your back. 2. RELAX YOUR POSTURE Sit comfortably against the backrest and place your hands on the steering wheel at the nine and three o’clock positions. Avoid leaning your head forward. If you’re forced to lean forward, it means your seat

3. TAKE REGULAR BREAKS If you’re going on a long drive, stop every couple of hours to walk around and stretch. This will ease sore muscles and promote blood circulation. You can also move your arms, wrists and neck when waiting at a red light. 4. CHECK THE AIR FLOW To promote blood circulation when driving, direct heat to your upper body rather than to your legs. Conversely, in summer, direct the air conditioning toward your legs. 5. EMPTY YOUR POCKETS If you have bulky items in your pant pockets, they can hinder movement in your pelvis or impede circulation in your legs. Before you get behind the wheel, remove your wallet, smartphone and other objects from your pockets. Adopt these good habits and you should feel more alert at the wheel and be free of pain when you reach your destination.

Shock absorbers 101 Shock absorbers ensure that your car rolls along smoothly and the wheels adhere to the road. Here’s what you need to know about this essential component of your car’s suspension system. HOW SHOCK ABSORBERS WORK Shock absorbers are pump-like devices that work in conjunction with your car’s springs. When you hit a bump on the road, the springs bounce to absorb the impact. The job of the shock absorbers is to diminish the springs’ vibrations. They do this through a process called dampening, in which they dissipate the kinetic energy of the springs as heat.

WHY THEY’RE IMPORTANT Without shock absorbers, your car would continue to bounce along after hitting a bump. This isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s also dangerous as it can cause your tires to lose traction, especially during turns. By diminishing the springs’ vibrations, shock absorbers keep your wheels firmly on the road and improve the handling of your vehicle. WHEN TO CHANGE THEM Most manufacturers recommend that you replace your shock absorbers every 80,000 kilometres. Signs that your shock absorbers need to be replaced include pronounced bouncing and vibrations

when driving and a longer stopping distance. If your shock absorbers are past their prime, be sure to get them replaced by a qualified mechanic.

Cycling Tourism Ambassadors, from left, Kyra Butlin, Andy Gadbois and Isabelle Hebert.

Cycling Tourism Ambassadors hit the trails in SDG PROVIDED BY THE UNITED COUNTIES OF SD&G THE COUNTIES, Ontario – Visitors and staycationers can count on a trio of SDG ambassadors to help them with everything from finding the most picturesque cycling route in the Counties, to helping to change a bicycle tire. Kyra Butlin, Isabelle Hebert and Andy Gadbois are the new Cycling Tourism Ambassadors employed this summer by the United Counties of SDG. Their main duties will include patrolling the waterfront trail and providing mobile visitor services experiences, greeting visitors, responding to inquiries, and promoting the SDG region. In the past our ambassadors have even helped a cyclists change a deflated tire.

“As COVID-19 restrictions are loosened, more people are enjoying our popular cycling trails,” said Karina Belanger, Counties tourism coordinator. “Our students have completed their training and will be spending much of their time interacting – while physically distancing – with visitors and cyclists to showcase amenities in and around SDG.” The students are looking forward to the balance of the summer and helping individuals visiting SDG or enjoying some time close to home. Andy, of Long Sault, is studying philosophy via Carleton University. Kyra is studying English at St. Francis Xavier University and Isabelle is studying engineering chemistry at Queen’s.

ANNUAL VEGETATION MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Every year, CN is required to clear its right-of-way of any vegetation that may pose a safety hazard. Vegetation on railway right-of-way, if left uncontrolled, can contribute to trackside fires and impair proper inspection of track infrastructure. The spray program is not being done for aesthetic reasons. For safe railway operations, CN will conduct its annual spray program on its rail lines in the province of Ontario. A certified professional will be applying herbicides on and around the railway tracks (primarily along the 16 feet graveled area/ballast). All product requirements for setbacks in the vicinity of dwellings, aquatic environments and municipal water supplies will be met.

June was one heck of a month

June will probably go down as one of the most consequential months for news locally, provincially, and nationally in recent memory. This month began shortly after the discovery of 215 Indigenous children buried in unmarked graves in Kamloops, BC. While the Kamloops Indian Residential School is on the other side of the country from Cornwall, it did have a unique impact on this community. Not only is the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) a close neighbour of Cornwall, and not only have some of their residents had their own experiences at Canadian residential schools, but one of their members, Georgina Lazore, had parents and other family members who attended the Kamloops Indian Residential School. This march I think highlights the importance to understand Canada’s history, all of it. Especially for Cornwall. For Cornwall to grow successfully, we need to build on our partnership with Akwesasne, and to do that, we need to understand that their view of Canada’s history is very different than what many of us learned in school. Later in the month, a vigil was held in Cornwall in honour of the Muslim family who were victims of a terrorist attack in London, ON. The vigil was organized by the Chaudhry siblings. For those not familiar with these three young siblings, keep an eye on them. They’ve already been involved in several important philanthropic initiatives already in this city and I believe that they will continue to be community leaders. I think that both of these events showcase some of the best of Cornwall. Both of these events stemmed from acts of cruelty, and in each case, Cornwall responded with acknowledgement and support. A third major event that happened this month was when South Glengarry Mayor Frank Prevost had criminal charges laid against him. I wrote about this at length in my June 16 column and I and this paper stand by all that was said then, but I mention this because it was an event that rocked the United Counties of SD&G and it would be an omission to not mention it. Last Tuesday came the latest, and possibly last major bit of breaking news to hit Cornwall in June. At time of writing there are still a few days left in June, so there’s still time for other news to break, but on Tuesday, June 22 Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement resigned her position with the city after she was appointed to the Canadian Senate. For both Clement and Cornwall, this is amazing news. Never before, to my knowledge, has Cornwall had a resident appointed to the Canadian Senate. For Cornwall, it is bittersweet however. Bernadette Clement was a great mayor and municipal leader. She began each and every meeting with an acknowledgement that we live on the traditional land of the Mohawk people’s of Akwesasne. I believe this was a small but important step in improving relations with our neighbours. Under Clement, the budget process was faster, more coherent, and saw lower than projected tax rate increases. The budget process is a team effort of the whole Council, but I credit Clement for making the effort to build relationships amongst Council. She emphasized lines of communication and teamwork and this Council has been more or less harmonious in my view. She led our community through the COVID-19 pandemic, marched with the community during the Black Lives Matter march, one of the largest demonstrations in our city’s history and finally, she set an example for women, people of colour, and everyone else. Being able to see oneself in positions of leadership make such futures possible. Bernadette Clement was a Mayor of Cornwall, and the first black female mayor in the history of this province. She was the first and with the example she set, she will not be the last. I would not usually be so glowing about an elected official. Bernadette however, is no longer Mayor, but she did a good job, and it should be said, and it would be dishonest for me to say otherwise. The City of Cornwall has approximately 60 days to decide whether to appoint someone to fill her position or hold a by-election. We will be following closely. Police being free from bias Dear Editor, I submit the following free from any bias or prejudice, Police have a certain obligation to act in a non-partisanship manner. Allowing police to decorate their uniform ( wearing rainbow colours) in support of the LGBT Gay Pride population, or any other group or party, is totally inappropriate and should not be allowed under any circumstances. This action may cause the public to suspect

that the Police member(s) displaying the colours would support members of the LGBT population over other groups or individuals. Police are a public service and should be free from demonstrating any affiliation with any Political or other particular groups, while in uniform. The Police and their uniforms should not be used as a advertising agent for the purpose of supporting any particular party or group... B. F. Wells, Cornwall, Ontario

A Woman with Ambition and Grace Dear Editor, “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much. You should aim to be successful, but not too successful.” Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Many people would argue that Senator Clement took advantage of her position as Mayor to get a seat as a Canadian Senator. Many don’t know that she applied for the position in 2016. She won the seat as Mayor of Cornwall in 2018, in an election I also ran in and lost. Many people don’t know that the only reason I ran for Council was because of her. Her impact on so many people’s lives cannot be understated. To get a call from the Prime Minister of Canada is a big deal, and to get a call about serving as a Senator is a once in a lifetime opportunity, any regular person would find it hard to argue with that. Those who don’t understand the impact of this needs to realize that her contributions to our community should be celebrated, so here we go: 1. Smashing the glass ceiling for women, and especially, Black Women. 2. Marching as a Black woman in the BLM

March in 2020, and demonstrating true leadership. 3. Carrying us through a pandemic in so much positive light. Holding Facbebook townhalls on everything from small business survival to healthcare, political unrest, and placemaking. 4. Working closely with and building a relationship with our amazing neighbours, Akwesasne. Bringing the Port Lands project to the forefront. 5. Helping Cornwall hit #8 on the MacLean’s list of Best Places to live in Canada. 6. Focusing major efforts on affordable housing, which we are close to seeing come to fruition downtown, and across from Freschco. These are just a few of her accomplishments that our community will benefit from almost immediately. My request to council is that they fill her empty seat with a true leader who embodies the values Clement brought to the table. Let’s continue to build on the momentum and continue to appreciate all the good things Senator Clement did for our community. Kelly Bergeron, Cornwall, Ontario

2022 Mayoral race now up for grabs Claude McIntosh Mac’s Musings

EDITORIAL@CORNWALLSEAWAYNEWS.COM

A late Friday afternoon telephone call to the city’s legal clinic re-arranged the landscape for Cornwall’s 2022 mayoral race. The call on June 18 was made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Bernadette Clement, who doubles as clinic supervisor and mayor. When the conversation was over Cornwall’s first female mayor, and Ontario’s only black female mayor, was writing her resignation, effective immediately. She is now Senator Clement. As surprise city hall announcements go, this one was a mega bombshell. Not even Clement saw it coming. All she knew was that she would be receiving an important telephone call at 4:30 p.m. She had no idea what it was about. Her resignation has swung the door wide open for those who knew challenging Clement in 2022 would be a hopeless cause – a waste of time and money. Serious challengers were looking beyond October 2022, figuring she would not seek a third term. In the meantime, council will need to decide, in the next few days, how it wants to fill the void for the rest of the term. The mostly travelled path is to elect a successor from around the council table. A far more complicated option is to call a by-election. When Mayor Emile Menard died a few months after he was elected in 1957, L. G. (Archie) Lavigne was crowned by his colleagues. When Ron Martelle stepped down

near the end of his second term to pursue a business venture, Dick Aubry was chosen by his colleagues to take the mayoral reins. Unlike Lavigne, Aubry did not run in the next election. In the current quest, council has 60 days – the clock is ticking - to fill the vacancy. At this point (this is written on Sunday) there is a good chance Glen Grant could be the next mayor. If council goes the more reasonable in-house route, the next decision would be how to replace the vacancy around the council table. Two mostly likely options are to appoint someone or go with the person who finished 11th in the last municipal election. In the past, both options have been used. Denis Carr missed the 10th and final spot by a razor-thin five votes. Ironically, Carr gained a seat on the last council when Brock Frost resigned. He had finished 12th but the 11th place finisher was taken off the list after moving to Florida. If Carr fills the seat, as expected, he will have earned the “Comeback Kid” title. It would be his third return after tasting defeat. He made it back on council after losing to Ron Martelle in the 1992 mayoral race. Carr said he will accept the offer if it is extended. “I think this is a pretty good council. I would be proud to be part of it,” he said. LOOKING BACK AT JUNE 1975 – Housing Director Laurier Courville and Chief Administrative Officer Maurice Engels were not singing from the same hymn book when it came to dealing with substandard properties in the city. The director wanted the city to use

“persuasion and reason” when dealing with delinquent property owners. Engels said it was time to test the year-old property standards bylaw by taking some of the more serious cases to court. The CAO pointed out that there were 600 cases of property standards violations on file yet not a single charge had been laid by the city. ALSO IN JUNE 1975 - A study unveiled at a public meeting put the cost of developing Guindon Park at $3 million. The plan called for a beach, docking for boats, an equestrian centre, picnic area, a funland, wetlands, roadways and a nine-hole golf course. The report said that protecting the environment should be a priority. The study cautioned that developing the park could take several years and could cost more than $3 million. ... There was plenty of turmoil on the city labour front this week in 1975 with both city police and fire fighters headed to arbitration while city transit drivers voted to strike. The 65-member police force sought a $3,600 one-year increase. The city offered $1,000 that would raise the annual pay for a first-class constable to $13,200. Over at the fire department, the 48 union members wanted a $2,960 across-the-board increase. The transit drivers demanded a 25% increase in a one-year contract. The city offered 25% over two years. ... A crisis line manned 24-7 by student nurses in the St. Lawrence College health sciences program was set up. It operated with a provincial grant. ... Ingleside was celebrating its 18th birthday. ... Ontario Transport Minister John Rhodes, in the city to turn the sod for the new transit building, said his government was willing to help fund an airport to serve Cornwall. ... Stormont,

Dundas and Glengarry Board of Education planned to hire 56 more teachers. ... Glenview Heights pool was officially opened. ... Cornwall hit a one-day water consumption record in mid-June with 12 million gallons of water consumed in a two-week mid-June period. That was four million gallons above average. The city said the water treatment plant had no trouble keeping up with the demand during an early summer heat wave. ... Cornwall native Moe Racine retired after 17 years with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He played on four Grey Cup championship teams. ... The Sylvania colour TV tube plant on Vincent Massey Drive was closing. ... It was announced that the Athletic Grounds would be renamed Joe St. Denis Field in honour of Cornwall recreation pioneer Joe “Skip” St. Denis who founded the first recreation program – Our Citizens of Tomorrow (OCOT) - in the 1930s. TRIVIA - At the sixth game of the 1980 Quebec Junior Hockey League final at the Ed Lumley Arena, a Sherbrooke Castors fan made history when he was removed from the building by city police for this doing this: 1) Streaking across the ice au natural, 2) Jumping into the Royals’ bench, 3) Scalping a game ticket, 4) Tossing a dead fish at the referee, 5) Trying to burn a Royals’ jersey. TRIVIA ANSWER In April 1962 Silver Bridge which spanned a section of Cornwall Canal near the Canadian Cottons plant was dismantled. Before the Seaway, when the canal was used by lakers, it was a popular swimming spot. QUOTED - “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” - Margaret Mead

Canada vs. USA: there’s no comparison! Nick Wolochatiuk Dances with Words

You can take that title and erase it. This week’s column is all about comparisons between the two countries that “…share the world’s longest undefended border.” You can erase that quote too. Border security between our two countries is now tighter than it’s ever been since the War of 1812. This week will definitely be all about comparisons between them and us, they and we. It is said that ‘size doesn’t matter’. They pound their chests about the impressive size of Texas, 695,662 km². In comparison, our two largest provinces, Quebec and Ontario, weigh in at 1,542,056 and 1,076,395 km². Let’s compare the Niagara Falls. Theirs is little more than a modest trickle with a clutter of boulders at its base. Our much more impressive Horseshoe Falls have a tremendous volume of water tumbling over its precipitous drop. However, we also win with the tackiness of our adjacent tourist streets. The NY ones are quiet, almost deserted. Our Clifton Hill area

rocks and boulders to be returned to us. I want the erroneous border line to be erased and redrawn. Good neighbours are supposed to share. As far as the five Great Lakes are concerned,

they are keeping Lake Michigan all to themselves. Tsk, tsk, tsk! Happy July 1, or July 4. Whatever you’re celebrating, we get to set off our fireworks first. We win!

is the ultimate in tackiness. We definitely win as far as showing up on time is concerned. Thanks to Newfoundland’s (and Labrador’s) eccentric half-hour time zone, Canada greets the day 30 minutes sooner than the east coast of the States. When mailing a letter, we include our six-character Postal Code. They have a variable number of numbers in what they call their Zip Code. Based on those inclusions, we can definitely say that Santa Claus is a Canadian, because any letter to him must include H0H OH0. When called to help countries invaded by the enemy, we kicked off at the report of the starting gun first. We declared war on the WW I enemy on August 15, 1914. The ‘doughboys’ waited until April 16, 1917. We entered WW II September 10, 1939 (exactly two months before I was born.). It took the attack on Pearl Harbor to finally wake up the Americans on December 8, 1941, three years later. Having a background as a geography teacher, I know that the Adirondack Mountains are definitely part of the Canadian Shield. However, they claim them as being part of NY State. I want every one of the Adirondack mountains, hills, valleys, rivers,

OMD Alexandros, mauvais discours ! Allume-toi !

Hmmm avait-on raison?

Quel sentiment formidable ! On peut finalement dire qu’on a terminé l’école secondaire.

You’ll be in the mood to chat, and some people will try to pick a fight. TAURUS: You’ll calculate your vacation budget more than once to make sure you can afford every activity. However, since details are easily overlooked, it’s best to plan to do more rather than less, even if it means sacrificing some things later. GEMINI: Your initiative will be at the forefront. At work and elsewhere, you’ll create opportunities for yourself and take full advantage of them. You’ll feel more energized after drinking a second cup of coffee and taking your vitamins. CAPRICORN: If a vacation is fast approaching, you won’t be able to truly get away from it all, as certain matters will keep you in contact with the office. In your love life, you’ll meet someone who keeps you waiting before your next encounter. AQUARIUS: You’ll be able to tie up loose ends and finish the projects you’ve been putting off for quite some time. Avoid improvising your vacation plans. Given the circumstances, many tourist spots will be completely booked, so make your reservations this week. PISCES: You’ll want to spend your vacation at home. However, you’ll quickly find that projects like improving your gardens and landscaping get in the way of more fun activities and your ability to relax. This will be the theme of your vacation.

South Glengarry launches FoodCycler pilot program PROVIDED BY THE TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH GLENGARRY SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The Township of South Glengarry is partnering with Cornwall/ Ottawa based company, Food Cycle Science to pilot an on-site food waste diversion solution that will reduce the amount of organics headed to the landfill. To reduce organics heading to landfill, South Glengarry will provide 100 FoodCycler machines at a subsidized price for residents to test in their homes over a 12-week period.

Each resident will track the amount of food waste they have diverted throughout the pilot duration to estimate the total impact of the pilot program. This program had broad support from council and administration and was based on other successful pilot programs run by Food Cycle Science across Canada. The program will also benefit from funding received by Food Cycle Science through the Impact Canada Food Waste Reduction Challenge. The cost to participating residents will be $120+HST which compares favourably to a

retail price of $500+HST. The reduction is cost is due to municipal discounts from Food Cycle Science, Impact Canada Investment, and subsidization by the Township of South Glengarry. “Considering the challenges, we have with landfill capacity and our greatly reducing landfill capacity we need to find solutions to help our residents reduce what’s going to landfills, particularly what shouldn’t be going to landfill,” – Councillor Stephanie Jaworski “I’ve received a number of positive messages from residents saying, “sign me up,

where can I get mine.” I’m 100 per cent in favour of it and hoping other members are too.”- Deputy Mayor Lyle Warden A sign-up process will be run by Township administration over the coming weeks and interested participants will be able to register for the program on the Township website until July 7, 2021. Prayers / thank you cards

From the family of the late Glen Cryderman we would like to thank everyone, family, friends and neighbours who sent cards, flowers, food, condolences and phone calls we received. Thank you for your kind and thoughtful donations towards Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Also thanks to Glen’s Kraft buddies standing by as his honour guard and Dave from Brownlee’s Funeral Home. I personally would like to thank Cindy and Lyle for helping Glen and I in the last few years, two good friends Bessie and Joyce for listening to me when I am down. We never really know how losing a loved one will affect us, but this loss had hit us hard. It is unbelievable the way a loss can completely disrupt your life. Thanks again, Janie, Darrin, Vicky & Brennan Cryderman

They ask that people be consistent and considerate in their enforcement. This is a picture of Carey Hamel and Jennifer Jones—a Canadian curler. I’ve had the honor of meeting her twice. And this time she not only took the picture with me but she also called my mom to wish her well because she wasn’t feeling well. Not many would do that. And who can say they got a call from not only a Canadian and world champion but an Olympic gold medalist. Jenn has got to be one of the most gracious curlers I’ve met and I’ve met a few. Over  $2,400 raised for Parkinson’s Canada Plants for Parkinson’s is a fundraiser created by Arianne Lalonde for her high school leadership class to help raise money for Parkinson’s research. With help from several sponsors she obtained, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Parkinson’s Canada. Her grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 18 years ago. Although he is and forever will be her Popa, throughout the years she has seen firsthand the effects of Parkinson’s and how it can change a person. It is a brain disorder

without a cure that worsens over time. It causes shaking, difficulty walking as well as talking and is something that not enough are aware of. Her goal was to raise $1,000 with the sale of hand painted terracotta pots along with a choice of annual flowers through her website and Facebook page. She sold out in one day with a total sale of $2,420 far exceeding her goal. That’s over 100 hand painted terracotta pots. She wishes to thank all the donors and the local sponsors.
