As the organizers of a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation annual fundraiser in Cornwall, and the parents of a pair of diabetic children, Jeff and Cherie have become overnight experts in the disease. The Third Annual Crafting for a Cure event, to raise money and awareness concerning juvenile diabetes, is taking place Nov. 6 from 7-11 p.m. at the Agora Catholic Centre in Cornwall on

CORNWALL, Ontario - The perception of many who live without diabetes is that it’s a treatable disease, without peril. But a Cornwall family last week - who have lobbied for more funding and research into the disease that sees more than 20 people an hour diagnosed - nearly lost one of their own in a harrowing example of what diabetes can do, even when you follow all the rules. Jeff and Cherie Lalonde’s daughter Ashley slipped into an unresponsive diabetic state the night of Aug. 3 and very nearly died. Without the help of her quick-thinking brother Evan who force-fed her a pair of juice boxes, and the work of doctors and nurses it’s likely the 17-year-old would have become another statistic in a disease that kills all too often. “I’m going to try and get through this without crying,” Jeff Lalonde said in an interview to recount the incident. “At one point she looked at me (in the hospital) and said ‘Am I dying?’” As a type 1 diabetic, like her brother, Ashley is constantly hooked up to an insulin pump that feeds her body the fluid necessary to help break down sugars in her blood. She and her brother also get up in the middle

of the night regularly to eat a scoop of peanut butter that helps stabilize sugar levels. On this night Evan found Ashley in her bed at about 1 a.m., shaking and unresponsive. “He fed her the juice boxes and called 911,” said Lalonde. “And then he called us.” Ashley and Evan were staying with friends of the family at the time. The Lalondes raced to the house to find paramedics loading Ashley into a waiting ambulance. She was whisked to the Cornwall hospital where doctors began a fight to stabilize her blood-sugar levels. After seeing her sugar levels crash, doctors were now combatting too much sugar in her blood. “It took an hour or two for her to become lucid,” said Lalonde. Doctors said as a teenager, hormone levels and an increased draw on the sugar in Ashley’s blood may have led to the crash. The experts are otherwise confounded as to why she nearly died. “She was doing everything right,” said Lalonde, adding his daughter had eaten properly and was taking the medications necessary to keep diabetes in check. “Her body just absorbed more than it normally would and caused her to crash.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall-produced domestic beer has taken another step towards reality. City councillors agreed Monday night to approve a limited liquor license for so-called Rurban Brewing Ltd., which is in the process of creating a micro-brewery at 414 Cumberland Street. Councillors and city staff were looking forward to the day when Rurban Brewing opens its doors. Rurban officials later said all that is holding them up from opening is the completion of contracting work and necessary inspections. “It’s a sector that is really growing,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. “There’s quite a lot of positive talk about this project.” Economic development manager Marc Boileau agreed. “They’ve made very good use of the property,” he said. It’s unclear when Rurban will be ready to begin production. Rurban plans to produce as many as 16 different varieties a year. The city license allows “by-the glass” sales of beer, in quantities not to exceed 341 ml (12 oz.), between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., on any day.

City hall readies new zoning rules for medical marijuana facility Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – If a medical marijuana operation in Cornwall gets city hall’s green light, it may have to follow a new prescription. The medical marijuana facility will have to conduct its operation completely indoors, on

fenced private property with outside surveillance equipment and owners must provide a valid Health Canada licence to municipal officials before beginning work. The city’s fire department and police services must also be officially notified. The new rules are included in a litany of provisions that will be discussed Aug. 24 at the next

planning advisory committee meeting. The city’s existing zoning provisions do not contain rules concerning the establishment of a medical marijuana facility. Such a facility, if it were approved by city hall, would likely be built within the city industrial park. The city has received four enquiries for commercial medical marijuana production facilities.

It should be noted that while hundreds of applications have been made to Health Canada, only a small percentage have been approved at the federal level. Federal regulations issued by Health Canada came into effect on April 1, 2014 which permits federally licensed commercial production facilities of medical marijuana.

Back with a splash: Waterfest has plenty of heart CORNWALL, Ontario - Dragon boats flew down the old canal in support of the Heart & Stroke Foundation at the sixth annual Kinsmen Cornwall Waterfest. Hundreds of spectators lined the edge of the field at Second Street West and Haulage Road on Saturday (August 8) as rowers went head-to-head in three divisions: community, sport, and survivor. “It gets intense,” said Stephen Bissonnette, team captain of the ‘Un-paddle-ables.’ Waterfest also featured live music, an Artfest component, and dance performances. Organizers expect to raise about $10,000 for the local volunteer-driven non-profit, which serves Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry, Prescott-Russell & Akwesasne. After crossing off ‘compete in a dragon boat race’ from her bucket list, Helene Sauve took to the waters again for the event’s flower

ceremony. While the song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ played, members from each team paddled to the middle of the canal and tossed a carnation in honour of a loved one. Sauve paid tribute to her father who died from a heart-related illness and her mother who survived a stroke. “It was very emotional,” said the ‘Pacemakers’ rower. “Waterfest is extremely important for raising awareness, and is very well-organized. I come every year, but this time I was invited to participate. The camaraderie and positive energy is what makes it so fun.” According to the Foundation, heart disease and stroke remain a leading cause of death for Canadian men and women, and nine out of 10 have at least one risk factor. This year, the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall stepped up as title sponsor, and club members joined the event’s board and manned a barbecue station.

Cooking up some deliciousness at Waterfest are, from left, Roger Samson, Rick Shaver, Eric Smellie, Daryll Adams, Ray Eady and Terry Muir. Adam Brazeau “We want to make sure this event takes off,” said club president Ray Eady. Cindy Rowe, area manager of the local Heart & Stroke Foundation, says the nature of Waterfest blends wonderfully into what the organization is all about.

“Physical activity can be a lifesaver – literally,” she said. “When you’re physically active, you can dramatically lower your risk of heart disease and stroke.” For more information, visit www.heartandstroke.on.ca.

Oh, Baby: keeping teeth healthy, right from the start Dr. Steven Deneka Thousands of parents will soon welcome little ones into homes from coast to coast with higher frequency than usual, since August is one of the most popular months for births in Canada. A baby’s first year is full of milestones, one of which is the appearance of their first tooth – it sure makes for a cute photo opp to post and share with family and friends. What new parents may not realize is that their child’s dental health actually begins well before that precious tooth ever makes an appearance. It may seem hard to believe, but baby’s teeth

start developing as tiny tooth buds underneath the gums before a child is born. After baby’s arrival, and even before the appearance of the first tooth, it’s important to start oral health off right by gently wiping gums with a soft washcloth to remove excess milk and help baby become used to you caring for their mouth. Where possible, it’s a good idea to clean an infant’s mouth twice a day, especially as teeth begin to erupt. Health Canada recommends cleaning the teeth of children under three who are at low risk of tooth decay with water; speak with your dentist about alternatives if your child is diagnosed as being more likely to develop decay.

All babies progress differently and some will start teething earlier than others; however, most babies will have 20 teeth by the time they are two and a half. Aside from regular cleaning, you can help baby’s teeth grow strong by: • Avoiding juices where possible – they may be high in sugar and lead to tooth decay. • Protecting your little one from chewing on hard surfaces or objects that may crack growing teeth. • Resisting the urge to provide your child with a bottle after they turn one and only give them water to drink at night. • Acting quickly, if required – some toddlers

can break, crack or loosen teeth while learning to walk. Don’t hesitate to call your dentist if your little one damages a tooth. Studies have shown that tooth decay is on the rise for children in Canada and across the globe, so it’s important to develop good habits early. In our office, we like to see children when their first tooth erupts or by age one, whichever comes first.

Council votes to hire new firefighters immediately Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – City council, by a razorthin 6-5 vote, decided in a surprise move to hire four new probationary firefighters. A new fire master plan calls for training enhancements within the Cornwall service and the addition of four positions shelved by council at budget time this year. Councillors were not expected to approve the hires Monday night, but with a collection of fire union members looking on, a slim majority green-lighted the decision. “If you say you need them…you’re the

expert,” Coun. Claude McIntosh told fire chief Pierre Voisine. Frustrated firefighters said earlier this year a series of problems, including shortcomings when it comes to training and four firefighting position (one per platoon) that have not been filled, have held the department back from improving services. The new fire master plan, which comes with a slew of 104 so-called action items, includes training improvements and the replacement of the empty positions. “We need to bring more of our training inhouse,” said Voisine. “We need that to keep our

skills up and keep our costs down. “We’ll also get better at managing our training records.” Voisine likened the shortcomings on the staffing side to double-shifting star hockey players – by the time the playoffs arrive the players are exhausted. In this case, problems are arising where more overtime is being worked and some people are not coming when asked to work extra time. Some firefighters are working as much as 57 hours a week. “We’re burning people out, pardon the pun,” said Coun. Elaine MacDonald, who agreed with

hiring the new firefighters immediately. “We don’t factor in injuries or longer term unplanned events,” said Voisine. “In this case we are in a situation where we have a firefighter on long-term disability - this leaves us not down four firefighters, but down five firefighters.” Overtime has spiked by as much as $200,000 in past years when staffing levels were reduced, he added. Councillors left about $208,000 in the 2015 budget to cover the costs of the four firefighters, but did not fill the positions. For full story click over to cornwallseawaynews.com.

CORNWALL EXCHANGE: 85-member choir performs in Seaway City next month CORNWALL, Ontario - Our musical cousins across the pond are making a stop in Cornwall next month as part of a multi-city choir tour. The Trelawny Male Choir, from Cornwall, England, will be in the Seaway City Sept. 17 at St. John’s Church to perform a variety of faith-based and secular music selections. And it’s no small feat.

The choir consists of 85 members from 18 Cornish male choirs. Gary Stokes, vice-president of the Centennial Choir here at home which is helping to sponsor the local performance, said the event will present an opportunity to take in a unique singing spectacle. “It’s not often you get to hear 85 voices together,” he said. “With the Centennial Choir we can get to about 75.” And there are some logistical issues to

overcome as well. The risers that are used for local performances accommodate up to about 55 people - so Stokes and his group are coming up with ways to extend the structure for Trelawny. Tickets ($15 for adults, $7 for children 12 and

under) for the performance can be purchased at St. John’s Church, the lottery kiosk at the Cornwall Square, Home Hardware and from Centennial Choir members. The show takes place at 7 p.m.

Agape Centre relishes support from business community Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - An appetite for chip truck fare and charity helped raise $950 for Cornwall’s largest food bank and soup kitchen. On Mondays throughout July, Séguin Patate and Cardinal & Son Wholesale Meats hosted ‘Hot Dog Days for Agape’ with the support of Betty Bread. The Marlborough Street eatery with 59 years of history gave away free frankfurters for healthy food and monetary donations to the centre. “It’s for a good cause and it was fun doing it,” said Michel Allaire, owner-operator of Séguin Patate. “We didn’t get too many food dona-

tions, but we sold close to 400 hot dogs.” Both Allaire and Jesse Cardinal, sales manager from Cardinal & Son Wholesale Meats, were delighted with the community support. “The Facebook stuff just flew around – we had a lot of shares and likes online,” said Cardinal. The Agape Center provides food and clothing to more than 1,000 people each month. The non-profit organization relies on the support from the community through donations of time, food, money, clothing and other household items in order to run its services. “We are so thankful to Michel and Jesse for organizing this fundraiser for us,” said Johanne Gauthier, operations manager. For more information on how to support the cause, visit agapecentre.ca.

As a result there will be no change in the delivery of our service for the term of this grant,” said Finucan. In July 2013, the downtown agency received a total of $306,500, which covered two fiscal years - an average of $150,000 per year, in contrast to the current $80,000. “Unfortunately, the decrease in budget is almost half,” said Lauzon-Alguire. “We are working diligently with our budget and trying to secure sustainable funding.” Finucan added: “Longer term we will need to find new sources of money. We believe the province should be involved and we know they are considering the issue.” Koala Place opened its doors in January 2014. The Pitt Street centre is utilized for forensic interviews and interviews with non-offending caregivers and witnesses, family meetings, child protection assessments, child protection mediation meetings, case reviews, and other relevant case management procedures.

Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon announced on Friday (July 31) the charitable organization will receive $160,000 over the next two fiscal years (ending on March 31, 2017). “Our Government understands that Canada’s youngest victims of crime need special services and support,” said Lauzon. The funding will be used to enhance the child and youth advocacy centre’s multi-disciplinary team of health, police, child protection, mental health, crown attorney and medical workers to ensure services are coordinated, consistent, child/youth friendly, culturally relevant, age appropriate, and not duplicated. “We are extremely pleased to receive ongoing support from Justice Canada,” said Koala Place executive director Elyse Lauzon-Alguire. “Koala Place would not have come so far, so quickly, to address the critical issue of child abuse if not for the support.” Koala Place chair Pat Finucan told Seaway News earlier this year the centre was bracing for a massive cut in federal funding. “We are pleased to have received this grant. ‘THE CARE CENTRE’: Brand new look, feel for former general hospital CORNWALL, Ontario - The transformation at the former Cornwall General Hospital has reached new heights - the place even has a different name. Now being touted as The Care Centre, developers are on the cusp of realizing a plan to turn the longtime hospital into a one-stop shop that caters to health-care needs of local residents, in particular seniors. Dan Orr and partner Matt Cinnamon own and operate the building following a $2-million purchase in May, 2014. In an interview both men said agreements are being hammered out to bring tenants into the cavernous 214,000 square-foot facility. The final touches are being put to leases concerning seniors residential units within The Care Centre, and professional spaces are also available on the commercial side. Between 50 and 100 residential units could be soon available. Popularity is beginning to swell, and Orr said in some cases he and Cinnamon have had to turn potential tenants away - including an engineering firm that was interested in some space. “We didn’t feel that was the best fit,” said Orr. “We certainly will have a health clinic here. In fact we have meetings coming up with doctors in the next few weeks.”

But the transformation hasn’t been without some challenges. The initial plan was to see some long-term care beds assigned to The Care Centre. Orr concedes that won’t be happening now, as the province and Champlain Local Health Integration Network are not in a position to green-light the creation of new long-term care (LTC) beds. “There’s no LTC beds available in Ontario,” he said. “We’ve tried to figure out ways to get LTC beds in Cornwall and we can’t disagree with the LHIN.” And the work isn’t cheap. Seaway News reported earlier this year it could cost as much as $1 million to renovate the hospital building into a facility that could someday include services like hair dressers, massage therapists, psychologists and social workers, to name a few. A social worker and a psychologist are already working out of The Care Centre, as is an office for Elder Abuse Ontario. The renovation number climbs to as much as $2 million for the adjacent clinic building that will need new windows, HVAC and electrical systems before tenants can move in. Cinnamon said the clinic building, while being cleaned out of unnecessary articles and refuse, still requires significant renovation work. More information can be found by sending an email to info@thecarecentre.ca.

Dan Orr, left, and Matt Cinnamon of The Care Centre, discuss some plans for the former Cornwall General Hospital.

Burger grills Tories, Lauzon feeling right at home Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Constituents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry had their choice to ride the Orange Wave or join the Big Blue Machine at a pair of annual barbecues. Over 400 people gathered at incumbent Conservative MP Guy Lauzon’s St. Andrews home for his eleventh annual constituency picnic on Sunday (August 9). Meanwhile at Cornwall’s Lamoureux Park, the local New Democratic Party riding association served over 250 people at its sixth annual barbecue. Both campaign events focused on the October 19th federal election, which is just over two months away, and offered a variety of free BBQ staples and live entertainment. The small differences: Lauzon had hundreds of lawn signs as parting gifts, many guest left with several. The local NDPs served a variety of homemade salads and other healthy alternatives to grill grub. “People need to be reminded of key moments he (Lauzon) hasn’t come through, and in these cases for Cornwall,” said Patrick Burger, federal NDP candidate for SDSG. The Lunenburg resident pinpointed the storage tanks on the city’s waterfront and bordercrossing issues. “The checkpoints were relocated at the bottom of the bridge, causing a massive traffic problem,” said Burger. “It was clearly a security risk since they couldn’t hold vehicles more than a few minutes. If Conservatives were concerned about security, that whole situation made no sense. He

should’ve told his party this is a unique situation with Akwesasne, unlike other border-crossings. But he couldn’t do that.” Lauzon fired back with a query of his own: “What’s the NDP going to do about the $2.7 million they spent on illegal campaigning. That’s a question.” Then the MP seeking his fifth consecutive term said: “Let’s talk about real things. We had people refusing to let CBSA do their job. There was nowhere to put the toll booth. Where did Mr. Burger suggest it be?” Lauzon’s wife, Francis, entertained the crowd with a singing performance earning her a standing ovation. Many guests expressed well-wishes to the couple after learning she’s currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments for non-Hodgskins lymphoma. “Is Guy going to take it by a landslide? Yes. Is Francis going to get better? Yes,”said Chesterville’s Gail Parker as she left the picnic with her father, Glen Cunningham, and three signs. Burger, an English teacher at John Abbot College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Que., has been a staunch NDP supporter since his university days. “I wasn’t really looking for a career change,” he said. “But I got involved with the riding association and people made it clear to me that I would be a good candidate.” Burger and his wife, Amanda, moved to South Stormont seven years ago. They have three rescue horses and a cat. For full story head over to cornwallseawaynews.com.

Dozens of quilts on display for IPM CORNWALL, Ontario - Winners of the Stormont Dundas Glengarry 2015 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM) quilt competition will be revealed at the Autumn Splendour Quilt Show next month. More than 100 quilts will be judged and displayed at the two-day event to be held at the Finch Arena, Aug. 14-15. “What began as a utilitarian household necessity grew into a colourful form of self-expression for our grandmothers and great-grandmothers and is now a mainstay of the fibre arts world,” says Monique Wilson, Chair of the IPM Quilt Committee. That artist self-expression is echoed in the work of special guest Cathy Miller, the Singing

Quilter. “The Victoria, British Columbia singer/songwriter, recording artist and quilter is very well known in the quilting community,” says Wilson, “and will be a great attraction and addition to our show.” IPM quilt competition categories include contemporary and traditional quilting, using both domestic and computerised machines, as well as free motion long arm- quilting and traditional hand-stitched quilts and quilted items. Competition quilts will also be on display in the quilting tent at the 2015 Stormont Dundas Glengarry International Plowing Match and Rural Expo, Sept. 22-26.

Judy Neville, far right, is pleased to find her quilt block incorporated into this IPM raffle quilt, one of three quilts put together by local quilting guilds.

Putting out fires, The Flower and more courtroom drama Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

What’s the hubbub, bub? City council finally got around to putting out a fire, of sorts, Monday night when a slim majority of councillors voted to hire a quartet of new recruits to fill out the Cornwall firefighting roster. Councillors had been booting around the subject for months, hoping against hope that a new fire master plan would somehow suggest we could do without the hires. Turns out the fire master plan is pretty clear when it comes to the new firefighters – sign ‘em up. But councillors who voted Monday night against immediately hiring the new recruits complained that they needed more time, perhaps another meeting, to get some more information before making the final decision. The issue, though, is they were going to hire the guys anyway…so why wait? A quick poll from the media table Monday night following the 6-5 vote (Mark MacDonald, Andre Rivette, David Murphy, Maurice Dupelle and Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy voted against the move) found that most, if not all, were prepared to hire the guys anyway. They got hung up on procedure, with claims like “We don’t normally do it this way” and

suggested a report on the financial implications of the hiring is warranted. What they may have forgotten is that the money to hire the firefighters is already in the 2015 municipal budget. Councillors voted this spring (maybe it was late winter?) to postpone the hiring while a search for a new fire chief and the fire master plan was wrapped up. The money, about $208,000 the last time I looked, wasn’t touched. It’s sitting in a bank account somewhere, just waiting to be gobbled up by the new recruits. Procedures, even those that make perfect sense, don’t need to be followed all the time. Coun. Carilyne Hebert was right to ask her colleagues to suspend the rules Monday night and finally get the issue decided. GUY, GUY, GUY Guy Lafleur was in Cornwall last week. City officials went down to meet him Friday when his yacht was docked at Marina 200 and snagged a few pics with the Montreal Canadiens legend that were shared on social media. The fact that some of those officials (Kevin Lajoie and Coun. David Murphy) are blinded by their love of the Toronto Maple Leafs (yuck) still couldn’t keep them from a few handshakes with the apple of every Hab fan’s eye. (Aside: if you’ve seen the photos one thing sure stands out – Lafleur is still solid as a rock.)

While were eating at Schnitzel’s Saturday night Lafleur happened to enter the restaurant not five minutes after we sat down. Myself and a buddy were so thrilled we rushed home to get our Canadiens jerseys and waited patiently for him to finish his meal and snap a few photos with the kitchen staff before we went over and took our turn. Lafleur was a pure gentleman throughout. APPEAL COMING? Word around city hall is the foundation is being laid to launch an appeal of the lawsuit filed against the mayor and some city councillors earlier this year. That was the conflict of interest lawsuit that was nearly laughed out of court by the judge

who heard the case. He dismissed it, and ordered the complainant to pay the legal costs of the mayor and councillors. Sounds like a great script for the folks in Hollywood – anyone know of a screen-writer with time on their hands? CORRECTION I goofed last week – which is what you get for reading a CBC story too quickly. I wrote that the current federal election is the longest in history. But my buddy Hugo Rodrigues, the managing editor at the Standard-Freeholder, rightly pointed out via Twitter that there were two longer elections, in 1872 and 1867. Thanks for your sharp eye Hugo…hope to see you in soon in Stormont-Dundas AND South Glengarry.

financial compensation or benefits. We believe both our parents would be proud of our individual achievements in life. Our father was indeed a hero for his part in the rescue of two civilians. Even though he was never officially recognized for bravery, we will never forget how that tragic day should never have happened had the proper safety

measures been in place. He died too young but we will always remember him as a great father, supportive husband to our mother and dedicated firefighter to the community of Cornwall.

letters Editor: An article entitled “First firefighter to die in the line of duty still a hero,” an opinion piece written by Claude McIntosh was published in the Seaway News (July 23, 2015). The article was well received by family and friends. It is a wonderful tribute to our father. We thought the author expressed sincerity and compassion

in describing the shocking events of March 2nd, 1964. Although we were young children when this horrific mishap happened, we clearly remember the events of the terrible day and the effect it had on our mother Gisèle (Lemay) and our entire family. minutes before the start to get a seat,” recalled retired fire chief Pete Champagne, who picked up the moniker Pistol Pete from then S-F sports editor Ray Shank who covered the senior hockey circuit in the 1960s. The East Enders played on a long-forgotten field behind Nativity Church. Lauzon, a retired Courtaulds employee, died in June. He was 86. * Hard to believe that it has been 20 years since the untimely passing of one of the greatest hockey talents to come through the Cornwall minor hockey system. Dave Ezard was just 36 when he died. He was most valuable player in the 1980 Memorial Cup series despite missing two games with a leg injury. During the 1979-80 regular season he became the first Quebec Junior Hockey League defenceman to score 40 goals (105 points), most of them rockets launched from the point. He scored another 18 in the playoff run. Steve Dryden, then editor of The Hockey News, said Ezard owned one of the hardest shots he had seen in the game, and that included the NHL. A neat gesture might be for either the Colts or River Kings to set aside No. 6 in memory of Ezard. * Among the many really good players to come out of that east-end football factory called St. Lawrence High School during local gridiron glory days, was Ray “Bouncer” Payette, a fleetfooted halfback. He got the Bouncer handle because of his knack for sliding off defenders. The Saints of the day (1950s early 60s) ruled EOSSA and were good enough to be invited to a Toronto Red Feather high school football extravaganza which included some of the best

Not many times do overnight visitors to the city grab the attention of law enforcement, but when a dozen Hells Angels booked into a city hotel for an overnight stay couple of weeks back, police became interested. The Angels, dressed in their club colours, were travelling on several Harley-Davidsons and in a van. At least three were wearing full patched jackets. City police were made aware of their sleepover and two members of the criminal investigation branch were dispatched to perform the standard recording of licence plate numbers. Sgt. Marc Bissonnette of the criminal investigation branch said the bikers paid no attention to the presence of two police officers in the parking lot writing down licence plate numbers. For the bikers, it is old hat stuff. According to one source, during their stay the bikers were polite, well-behaved, had little to drink in the way of alcoholic beverages and were generous tippers in the dining room, reportedly leaving a $500 tip when they paid the bill. Law enforcement agencies in Canada and the United States list the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club as one of the “major MC gangs in North America, the others being the Pagans, Outlaws, Mongols and Bandidos.” And, if you are thinking of applying for Hells Angels’ membership, one of the requirements is a valid driver’s licence ... and a motorcycle over 750cc. No mopeds. Nothing about police background checks.

The Cornwall visitors have been the same group of Hells Angels who spent Thursday night at the same Toronto hotel as Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The PM was in Toronto for the leaders’ debate. The bikers said they were in town for a funeral. According to the Toronto Star, the Mounties ramped up security when it was discovered the Angels were staying at the same hotel. Just as surprised as the RCMP were the bikers. The newspaper reported that one of the bikers said he was surprised to see that the PM was a hotel guest. “I saw a lot of police officers around the hotel when we arrived and knew they couldn’t all be here for us (bikers),” said one. For years the face of the Hells Angels in Canada was Maurice “Mom” Boucher currently doing 25 years (eligible for parole in 2022) for the murder of two prison guards. The Toronto Sun last year reported that after Boucher had been booted from the gang. * Cornwall Fire Department senior firefighter Brian O’Neill retired on July 31 after 26 years service. So, what does he plan to do? O’Neill said he wants to do some missionary work, perhaps spend some time in Africa next year. * Ron Lauzon, a first baseman, was one of the city’s talented softball players back in the days when they had the East Cornwall Softball League (Cornwall Township) and North End Softball League which played out of venerable King George Park. The league champs would clash at KGP for city bragging rights. “The park would be packed. You had to get there 30

Inseparable hound dogs need new home Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Molly and Sunshine are a package deal. After receiving a complaint about their living conditions, the six-year-old hounds were rescued on July 4 by the Stormont-DundasGlengarry branch of the Ontario SPCA. Since then, the sisters have been up for adoption at the animal shelter located in Cornwall. “These dogs spent most of their lives together in a pen,” said SD&G SPCA branch manager Carol Link. “We’d prefer to adopt them as a pair. They deserve a happy ending.” She confirmed the case is closed, but not if charges under the Animal Care Act have been laid or where in Cornwall-SD&G the former owner resides. “You can see they were fed, however, they were living in a pen that wasn’t very clean,” said Link. “The elderly owner wasn’t able to properly care for them. So they were surrendered to the animal shelter.” Happy to escape the confines of steel bars, if only momentarily, the pair is taken outside for a

photo. Sunshine keeps a wide-eyed stare, cautiously maneuvering around her handler with a gentle disposition, as Molly leads the way, eager to explore. It costs $340 to adopt a rescued dog. But if both dogs are adopted together, the second fee would be cut in half, equaling $510. The SD&G SPCA operates on fundraising initiatives, fees, and donations alone - it receives no government funding whatsoever. Enter Cornwall’s Lain Cadieux. After collecting $976.28 for CHEO at Giant Tiger in mid-June, she’s ready for another charity challenge. With hopes of raising $600 for the SD&G SPCA, Cadieux is hosting a yard sale, with donated items from the community and a basket draw, at 4 Yates Avenue on Saturday, August 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “I love animals and I want to help them,” she said. For further information on Molly and Sunshine or how to donate, contact the SD&G SPCA at 613-936-0072. You can also visit www. sdg.ontariospca.ca.

Last of two tugboats lifted from the river The area around the capsized tug was off limits to river traffic until Monday. The LCM 131 and the larger Lac Manitoba capsized in late June while trying to position a barge on the swirling river. No one was killed in the incident but there were some injuries. The barge was being moved to facilitate the demolition of the high-level Seaway International Bridge.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The last of two capsized tugboats has been removed from the St. Lawrence River. The LCM 131 was lifted out of the swirling river in Cornwall Saturday and brought ashore Sunday. The vessel was transported to the Cornwall Harbour by barge before being loaded on a flatbed trailer.

GOLF

A golfer’s nightmare: the sand trap and hit about 5 cm behind the ball. At the end of the line, it’s the sand which propels the ball out of the bunker. The rules stipulate that trying a practice shot in a sand trap is forbidden under pain of penalty. On the other hand, if water is present in the trap, the player can, if the ball is in the water, move it out of the water but not in the direction of the hole. As in all aspects of the game, in order to be at ease when playing in a sand trap, don’t hesitate to take some lessons and to practice. A lot of golf clubs have practice areas with a sand trap. And now that you’ve got yourself out of that nightmare, be sure to level the sand with the rake.

The sand trap is the obstacle, often located near a green, so dreaded by many golfers and which can soon ruin a good golf score. Even worse than the big lake on the right or the wooded area on the left, the sand trap, or bunker, represents a real nightmare for many golfers. Because golfers slow their swing for fear of overshooting the green, the ball often falls short and is caught in the bunker. Has that ever happened to you? In order to produce a good shot to get out of the sand trap, a golfer must use a sand wedge. All you have to do is to adopt a slightly open position and to place yourself in such a way that the forward foot is level with the ball. Don’t grip the club too tightly. Open the face of the club

RIDING FEVER: Mom and daughter take on the competition atop a horse Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – When parents and children can often be found at odds over everything from what to watch on TV (kids still watch TV, right?) to how clothes should be folded, the Boucher family have found a way to connect. You just jump on a horse. Mom Lisa and daughter Madison, 11, are the duo that has turned a love of riding into a competitive fire. The pair now compete regularly in riding events throughout the season, with Lisa facing adults and Madison in the junior division. Lisa first rode a horse at age 5. “It’s been that way ever since,” she said. “And Madison got her first horse ride before she could even walk.” The Chesterville family, including father Corey, has a small five-acre hobby farm and have competed in 10 events this year in the

‘hunter’ discipline, an event where rider and horse maneuver through a course of obstacles and are judged on their abilities to communicate effectively and maintain proficient form. Lisa said she and Madison plan to take it up to 15 shows next year. “Once it’s in the blood, it’s there,” she said. Lisa rode all her life, but when she had Madison she took a break for six or seven years to concentrate on Madison’s riding. Once it became clear Madison was made for the saddle, Lisa got back up on that horse and started riding – and competing – again. “We feed off of each other, Madison and I,” she said. Her daughter enjoys the freedom of being atop a horse. “It makes me feel good because I can do a lot of things on the horse,” said Madison. The duo just finished a competition on their home turf in Chesterville, and is competing this month in Carleton Place.

No cover charge, but lots of real music Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com I prefer to see a chipmunk or a raccoon in the wild rather than a grizzly bear or a tiger behind bars. Or a softly strummed guitar around a campfire more than a highly amplified rock group in a vast concert hall. Seeing one Avro Lancaster flying overhead is far more exciting than viewing one in a museum. Music is everywhere in Cuba. A core part of Havana’s economy, the cover charges at the tourist venues bring much-needed foreign

revenue. During our two-week stay in Havana, my wife and I enjoyed the music that accompanied almost every dinner. However, most of the time we dined picnic-style on local produce purchased from street vendors and bakeries. The accompanying photograph speaks for itself. It was just a grab shot, not planned, not one of the ‘Smile, 1, 2, 3…, Ready? Look at the camera…’ kind. Along with many locals, we were in line at the local panaderia to get some hot-out- ofthe-oven buns for our daily picnic lunch. We

waited patiently in the queue, along with the friendly locals. Check the photograph carefully. The local in the striped shirt tapped a rhythm on the glass counter-top. The baker burst into song, as did virtually everyone else. The baker’s little daughter beamed in delight. My wife’s hands (left foreground) became part of the clapping chorus. That is music, real music, music from the heart and soul of an impoverished yet proud people. “Things go better with – music.”

news

Cecil the lion now a global figure Opinion Column - Sultan Jessa A short while ago, very few people had heard of the black manned lion called Cecil who lived in a protected national park in Zimbabwe. Following his death by an American dentist, Cecil has become a household name. There was outrage on social media and everyone, from famed Hollywood stars to ordinary people, mauled the Walter Palmer who is reported to have lured the lion out of the national park and then shot him first with arrows and then with a gun. The condemned dentist is certainly not the first person to kill a lion and other big game in Africa. Kings, film starts and the very rich have done this in the past. And they have killed “innocent” animals with the full knowledge of legal authorities. A lot of blame should be placed on African governments who allow this. There is a very good reason why African governments allow this. Big game hunting and tourism bring muchneeded cash to these struggling African countries. Some countries allow the slaughter of animals because it is necessary to control their population. However, the hunt in Zimbabwe caught international headlines after the photograph of the dead lion with Palmer next to the fallen animal was posted on Face book. Then hell broke loose. The dentist has openly boasted of killing

Africa’s big five with his bow and arrow. He is certainly not the first person to do so. Many others have done this in the past and continue doing this to this day. The dentist from Minnesota is believed to have paid $64,000 to kill the much-loved 13-year-old lion with a crossbow in July. Cecil was known to visitors. Cecil was lured at night out of the park, using bait, and then shot with a bow and arrow. The wounded Cecil did not know immediately die and was tracked down and then shot with a gun. For some strange reasons, Zimbabwe is now seeking the extradition of the dentist. The dentist is now branded as a poacher. It is not clear if the hunt was legal. Did trackers who assisted the dentist knowing Cecil was protected? I was furious when I heard Cecil was killed. I too, expressed my rage, and joined in worldwide condemnation. I say charge the dentist if he knowingly killed Cecil. Big game hunters believe what they do to bag Africa’s big five is a legitimate sport just like fox hunting in Britain. African governments can put an end to this thrilling sport. But, this is not likely to happen. African governments need tourism dollars for economic development. The only sad part of this saga is a British university was tracking this famed lion for research purpose.

EAST BRANCH 613-933-2481

CONROY, Irene T. – With great sadness, we announce the passing of Irene (Barkley) on July 22, 2015, in her 97th year. Beloved wife of the late Robert “Bob” “Bert” Conroy who worked at Gulf Oil for many years. She was originally from Berwick, then Cornwall, Toronto and Port Credit, returning to Cornwall six years ago. Predeceased by her parents Lewis and Mary (Lynch) Barkley. Irene will be missed by her nieces and nephews including Lana Conway (Leo Lowe and daughter Lissa), Blain Conway, Mervin Conway (Hazel) and family and Holly Conway. Family living in Florida include her niece Mary Lou Wright and her son Joe O’Brien and their family. Many of her Kenmuir Avenue and Port Credit neighbours and friends remember the woman that loved to play cards, dance, travel and above all be with people to share a story and a laugh. Irene was a sweet and gentle woman. She had a sharp mind and was always interested in family life, consistently remembering details about each family member. The family would like to thank the staff at Heartwood Nursing Home in Cornwall who treated her with kindness, dignity and respect. The family will be in attendance at Lahaie & Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Homes, East Branch, 614 First Street East (613-9332481) from 7 – 9 p.m. Friday. Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life with a Memorial Mass on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at St. Mary’s Church, Williamstown at 11 a.m. Interment, St. Mary’s Cemetery followed by a luncheon in the Parish Hall. Following Irene’s wishes, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the ALS Society of Canada. Messages of condolences may be left at www.lahaiesullivan.ca. 6360292

Helping local Lions The Cornwall Lions Club would like to thank Scotiabank of Cornwall for their support and helping hands during the 9th Annual Lions Club Lobster Feed. The assistance of the Scotiabank team of volunteers was a positive asset to the success of this event. The fact that the Scotiabank matched the fundraising with the amount of $5,000 is a key factor. From left are Cornwall Lions Club members Wayne Locke, Ewan St. Louis, and Ron Eamer, with Scotiabank staffers Diane Dupuis, Kimberly Simson, and Denise Lapierre. Priceless

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing and stopped at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating women behind him was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to go through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, “I’m very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, giving the guy in front of you the finger and cursing him. I noticed the ‘What Would Jesus Do’ bumper sticker, the ‘Choose Life’ licence plate holder, the ‘Follow Me to Sunday School’ bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally... I assumed you had stolen the car.”
