Consider it the Super Bowl of international shooting festivals, held annually since 1859, that attracts top marksman from all across the

Midwifery birth numbers spike at Cornwall hospital CORNWALL, Ontario – The number of midwifery births at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) has spiked, with 49 over the last fiscal year – eclipsing the total of the previous two years combined. The hospital attributes the increase to an increased number of midwives making their way into the operating room to support the mother and baby during a cesarean section. Eight local midwives have privileges at CCH. And the increases also include, starting this year, so-called skin-to-skin care has been intro-

duced for moms delivering via cesarean section. “It’s the natural thing to do, after giving birth, regardless of which delivery method occurred. It’s what convinced me to have my baby in Cornwall this time,” said Julia Esposito, who was the first mom to have this experience in the operating room with her newborn daughter Georgia. “The baby immediately calmed down once placed on me; it was a special moment shared with my husband and I and the newest addition to our family.” Early skin-to-skin care (also called kangaroo care) is a natural process that involves placing a naked newborn chest down on the mother’s bare chest and covering the infant with blankets to keep it dry and warm.

Ideally, skin-to-skin care starts immediately after birth or shortly after birth, with the baby remaining on the mom’s chest until at least the end of the first breastfeeding session. For decades, when a C-section would occur, the mother would only get a glimpse of their newborn before they were whisked away to be cleaned and checked. The mother would then spend up to two hours, away from their newborn. Policies and procedures have been changed and now baby stays with mom until both are ready to return to the women and children’s health department on level 6 at the hospital. Skin-to-skin with mother within the first hour of birth has many proven benefits. It stabilizes the

newborn’s respiration, warms the infant maintaining optimal body temperature, reduces stress, regulates blood pressure, decreases crying and increases the quiet alert state of the baby., the hospital said in a release. “When I was at CCH with my first baby in 2013, the birth wasn’t personal. The baby was only by my side once I was released from the recovery room. This time, I was more aware of my surroundings because the baby was with me the whole time,” said one mom, who preferred to remain anonymous. “Skin-to-skin was happening with moms who delivered vaginally, why wouldn’t moms who had a C-section deserve that same experience?” she added.

Something special brewin’ at Rurban in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s return to the brewing scene has taken nearly a century, as a new local operation is just weeks away from producing its first batch. Rurban Brewing, on Cumberland Street, is in the homestretch of an odyssey that has seen owner AJ Rorabeck turn a dream of brewing his own beer (and making a living at it) into a reality. Well, almost. City council Monday night gave Rurban Brewing the go-ahead for a limited liquor license that will allow “by-the-glass” sales of its product. The big steps will come in the next few weeks as final construction of the brewing apparatus is completed at Rurban, and inspectors ensure that everything is up to code. Rorabeck said if he isn’t brewing beer by the end of August, her certainly will be by September. “It was a gradual progression to get to this point,” said Rorabeck, about as laid back a businessman as you will find. “I’d been kicking around this idea for a few years.” Rurban will be the first Cornwall-based brewing company to operate since St. Lawrence Brewery closed its doors in 1920. In the 95 years since then brewing in Ontario has undergone monumental changes, and now finds itself returning to its roots, as more and more craft-type breweries set up shop. Rorabeck knows most of those new owners,

including the ever-popular Beaus All-Natural Brewing in Vankleek Hill. “They are the guys that proved the market existed,” said Rorbeck. “In fact, you could say they helped develop the market.” Rorabeck plans to follow the German tradition of producing beers based on the seasons of the year. And with the capacity to brew four batches per season, Rorabeck has designs on as many as 16 varieties per year. “Craft beer drinkers love variety,” he said. “And variety is what I am going to produce.” It’s a fairly big change for Rorabeck, who was a teacher for years (along with his wife Karen) before hanging up the chalk in favour of hops and barley. Rorabeck has amalgamated the rural (his ingredients) with the urban (his inner-city locale) to create Rurban. His operation is located in a renovated industrial setting on Cumberland Street between Fourth and Fifth streets. “The location seemed like the best fit,” he said. “The outside of it has a great look and the inside (is great) for brewing operations.” More on Rurban can be found at rurbanbrewing.com. Rurban Brewing, on Cumberland Street, is in the homestretch of an odyssey that has seen owner AJ Rorabeck turn a dream of brewing his own beer (and making a living at it) into a reality.

Stovetop cause of Louisa Street blaze ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A litter of kittens is resting at the animal shelter after being rescued from a smoke engulfed apartment, sparked by a kitchen fire, in the city’s east-end. The Cornwall Fire Department received a call at 3:06 p.m. on Saturday (August 15)

reporting smoke billowing from a fourplex in the 300 block of Louisa Street. There were no injuries reported. Acting Platoon Chief Jody Dewar told Seaway News the tenant forgot to turn off a stove element before leaving the bottom apartment. The six unattended pets fought for air until ten firefighters and four fire trucks arrived at the scene and quickly doused the blaze.

Dewar said since the tenant was unable to afford veterinarian care, the felines were willingly surrendered to SD&G SPCA. “They appeared fine, but a few suffered a little smoke inhalation,” he added. The apartment’s cupboards, stove, and kitchen walls suffered heavy smoke damage and a few windows were broken. The apartment above also incurred smoke damage.

According to the report, there were active fire alarms in all units and the other tenants were outside when crews arrived. One upstairs apartment is currently vacant. “We’ve ruled the incident as accidental in nature,” said Dewar. Firefighters wrapped up the scene at about 5:00 p.m. The investigation is closed and the building has been turned over to its owner.

‘YOU’VE GOT TO MAKE A LIVING’: Shawarma operation reopens CORNWALL, Ontario – The owner of a shawarma shop on Pitt Street that was the scene of a police bust in May is reopening his store. Hussein Yassin said in a telephone interview from the newly-branded Shawarma On Wheels on Pitt Street he had planned to reopen Aug. 14. “All I know is I have the best food in North America,” said the owner of what was once known as Cedar’s on Wheels. “You’ve got to make a living somehow.” Hussein Yassin, 40, was listed as one of eight people charged in May after police broke up a drug and weapons operation officers dubbed Project Harden.

“I don’t want to talk about that,” Yassin said. “Whatever it is, it is. Nobody can beat the police, even when they are wrong.” Project Harden focused on the trafficking of handguns and cocaine in eastern Ontario and led to eight arrests, nine seized firearms, and 107 charges. “The operators of a Cornwall business, known as Cedar’s On Wheels, were arrested and charged in relation to this investigation,” said OPP Superintendent Paul Beesley in May at a press conference to announce the charges. None of the charges or assertions by police have been proven in court.

Multiple search warrants were executed May 27 in Ottawa, South Glengarry, Akwesasne, and Longueuil, Que., as well as a Cornwall home near St. Lawrence College and the popular Pitt Street restaurant, located across the street from the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) station.

Low interest rates, inflation means Progress Fund isn’t worth what it used to be Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Progress Fund ain’t what it used to be. The $25-million account created via the sale of Cornwall Electric by city hall in the late 1990s is not generating the type of interest it has in previous years thanks to a decline in rates that has plagued the Canadian economy. And because of inflation, $25 million won’t ‘buy’ as much as it could back in 1998 when the fund was created. In its glory days, way back in 2001, the fund generated as much as $1.6 million. But it has steadily dropped every year since, earning just $609,000 in 2014 and has generated $281,000

halfway through this year - suggesting by the end of 2015 it will come in at even less than 12 months ago. The principle of the fund has never been touched by city councillors, only the interest generated by the money is used to pay for “quality of life” projects in Cornwall, like the aquatic centre and now the Benson Centre. But because the Progress Fund is not generating as much interest as it has in years past, the city may have to dip into its own cash to cover loan payments being made on Benson Centre financing - as much as $140,000 Coun. Claude McIntosh suggested Monday night at city hall. “The dividend cheques are getting smaller

and smaller and that’s because the ineterst rates are dropping,” he said. City finance manager Maureen Adams agreed times are tough for the Progress Fund in the short term. “Our return is hovering in around about 2.25 per cent. It’s certainly not that great,” she said. “I am projecting that for a couple of years we are going to see some challenges with what we earn on the Progress Fund.” But there is a flipside, Adams added. Because interest rates are so low, the city has been able to secure financing for some rather large projects, like the Benson Centre and newlycompleted waste water treatment plant, that will

be in place for many years to come. When ineterst rates rebound, the city could be sitting pretty with relatively low loan payments on other projects, while the Progress Fund begins to make more money. “We’ve got some good solid financing for bigger projects at three per cent levels,” she said. “There is a little bit of a silver lining. “Part of our optimism might be that within five to eight years we might see those rates come a bit higher.” The Progress Fund has generated about $18.3 million in interest over the course of its life money the city would have never seen had the fund not been created.

EOHU issues West Nile virus warning CORNWALL, Ontario - Mosquitoes in Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry have tested positive for the West Nile virus, according to health officials. The West Nile virus is present in SDG. The EOHU warns the public to beware of mosquito bites and to take the proper precautions. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit issued the public warning on Thursday (August 13). The health unit says there are currently no human cases reported in the region. However,

elsewhere in Ontario, some cases have surfaced. “EOHU has been actively monitoring mosquitoes for West Nile virus,” said Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, medical officer of health. “This finding shows that West Nile virus remains a concern in our area. Residents should be aware and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.” The virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can be deadly in

some cases, especially for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. The following measures can help reduce the risk of West Nile virus: Use federally registered personal insect repellents, such as those containing DEET. Use a light coating on exposed skin. Follow label instructions for proper application. Wear light-coloured clothing, long sleeves, pants and socks when outside. Avoid being outside at dusk and dawn, as

mosquitoes are the most active at that time. Ensure that all containers in or around the yard like tires, pool covers, saucers for flowerpots, wading pools and children’s toys are regularly emptied of standing water. Ensure that screens, windows and doors are fully sealed to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house. For more information on West Nile virus, call 613-933-1375 or 1-800-267-7120 and ask for Health Line.

VETERANS WALK: “We’re going to remember them every day”

Second World War veteran Walter Solly (seated) at the inaugural Veterans Walk ceremony at the cenotaph in Cornwall, Ont., on Thursday, August 13, 2015. Adam Brazeau when we drive down this section of Second Street, we’re going to remember them every day. What we’re giving back to them is very little for what they gave to us,” said Ken Heagle, past president of Legion Branch 297.

The association arrived in Canada on Aug. 1 and will continue honouring soldiers, veterans, and war dead at organized events in Ottawa and throughout Ontario before returning to Normandy at the end of the month.

CORNWALL, Ontario - One sure way to honour the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers who fought the occupying Germans in Normandy is by following in their footsteps. And that’s exactly what led a delegation of young Normans from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to Cornwall’s inaugural Veterans Walk on Thursday (Aug. 13). “It’s important we honour the bravery of Canadian soldiers in person,” said Adelaie Caille, a 24-year-old member of the Francebased Westlake Brothers Souvenir Association, named after three Toronto soldiers and brothers, George, Tommy and Albert, who died at Normandy during the Second World War. Veterans, city officials, and the visitors from France (37 students and chaperones) gathered at the Cornwall Cenotaph during a special ceremony, hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 and the SD and G Glens Association. The ceremony included: singing the national anthem, a moment of silence, and the laying

of wreathes by dignitaries and special guests, as well as a stirring rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ and bilingual readings by the Normandy students. “It’s great to see the youth coming to Canada to remember something so important – and that is our freedom,” said Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. In addition to launching the first Veterans Walk, the event also acted as a meet-and-greet for the teens, young adults, and the SD & G Highlanders, also known as The Glens. The students’ gratitude for Canadian Second World War veterans stretches across continents to Cornwall’s Walter Solly and Rudy Roy, who fought on D-Day and were in attendance at the ceremony. The walk started at the cenotaph on Second Street West, freshly lined with decorative banners commemorating those who fought to protect Canada in the World Wars, and ended at the Legion, where everyone gathered to dedicate a massive 26-ton self-propelled Howitzer. The tank sits atop a concrete pad at the corner of Second and Cumberland streets. “We’re going to remember our veterans from now on. Yes, we do remember them on November 11th and we honour them, but now

Taste of the townships: Local Food Challenge gets underway CORNWALL, Ontario - If you’re going to take a bite out of Cornwall and SDG, what better place to whet your appetite than the Long Sault Farmers’ Market? Organizers of the inaugural Local Food Challenge gathered at South Stormont’s fresh food hub to launch the 10-day event on Friday (August 14), which runs until Sunday (August 23). More than 180 residents of StormontDundas-Glengarry, Prescott-Russell, and Cornwall have already accepted the social media and community challenge, according to Kat Rendek, of All Things Food, one of the nonprofits spearheading the event. “We wanted to create a fun opportunity for people to engage with their local food community,” she said. “There are so many wonderful vendors, restaurants, and producers in this region worth celebrating.” Cornwall City Councillors Bernadette Clement, Carilyne Hebert, and Justin Towndale have also accepted the challenge. The politicians also purchased several bags of fresh, locally grown produce and meats while at the Long Sault Farmer’s Market, stocking up for their trip to the 2015 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) AGM & Annual Conference in Niagara Falls, from Sunday, August 16 to Wednesday, August 19. “It’s important to support local farmers and growing up my parents always had a garden. Having food grown close to home is something I’m very familiar with,” said Towndale. He has always liked to eat fresh and local as much as possible. Growing up, Towndale ate from his parents’ garden, and even when he lived in Toronto he frequented the St. Lawrence Market. “For me having food grown close to home is something I’ve always been very familiar with,” he said.

At the 10-day challenge’s lauch event in South Stormont on Friday, August 14, 2015.Pictured from left, Kat Rendek, All Things Food coordinator and Local Food Challenge partnering coordinator, Sarah Mulvihill, Local Food Challenge communications assistant, Andrew Phillips, Avonmore Berry Farm, Cornwall Coun. Justin Towndale, and South Stormont Councillor and Long Sault Farmers’ Market founder and manager Donna Primeau Adam Brazeau

South Stormont Councillor and Long Sault Farmers’ Market founder and current manager Donna Primeau was also in attendance at the event launch. Primeau says the farmers’ market is important for its social aspect and because it brings healthy food to families. “It’s awesome to have farm-fresh food on my kitchen table, brought to me right here in South Stormont,” she said. Local Food Challenge organizers include, All Things Food, Transition Cornwall +, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the Eastern Ontario Agrifood Network, Growing Up Organic, Centre de santé communautaire de l’Estrie, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, and Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects. To take part in the Local Food Challenge, register for free at: www.sdgprlocalfoodchallenge.com. Participants can track their daily consumption of local food during the ten-day period on the log sheet provided, access the PR-SD&G Local Food Map, be eligible for daily prizes, will receive tips for enjoying the season’s harvest, and are encouraged to share their experiences across social media using #eatSDGPR.

CORNWALL, Ontario - While there has been no official word, the massive staff cuts announced today at Kraft Heinz includes some workers at the Ingleside plant near Cornwall. Social media posts from an employee at the Kraft plant in the South Stormont village indicate some people are being walked out of the facility, presumably after being told they are surplus. Later another employee, who wished to remain anonymous, told Seaway News some “management jobs” have been eliminated in Ingleside. Nothing has been confirmed by Kraft Heinz concerning the specifics of last Wednesday’s announcement that 2,500 employees in both Canada and the U.S. will be let go. An Ingleside worker estimated as many as nine people were let go at that plant. Other reports indicate the affected workers are mostly salaried employees who do not

work on the factory floor. South Stormont Mayor Jim Bancroft indicated he had heard some rumours from Kraft employees “but nothing worth repeating.” Michael Mullen, a Kraft Heinz spokesperson, sent a lengthy emailed response when reached by Seaway News. Mullen said: “We have developed a new streamlined structure for our organization to simplify, strengthen and leverage the Company’s scale. This new structure eliminates duplication to enable faster decision-making, increased accountability and accelerated growth.” His entire response can be read at cornwallseawaynews.com.

Cornwall woman wants to keep train whistles blaring Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - If Kisa Lanctot has anything to say about it, another petition to halt train whistles in Cornwall won’t ever leave the station. Lanctot has put together a petition of her own, to keep the whistles blaring, because she is concerned about safety should city councillors decide to ask CN/Via Rail to stop the practice. This week city council accepted a petition

signed by nearly 100 people who want the train whistles stopped at the Tollgate Road crossing in Cornwall. Not so fast, says Lanctot. “I’ve heard stories lately from people who live right near the tracks saying that it just becomes background noise to them, so they don’t even notice it anymore,” she said in an interview. “But if it does keep you up, I hope you can look at the positive and see how many lives the whistle could be saving as you’re lying there in bed. “Or even talking to the city about other ways to deal with the noise for, example sound

barriers which could probably lower the noise a bit, instead of completely getting rid of the whistle.” So far she has more than 100 electronic signatures on an online petition at change.org. She’ll likely need to collect actual signatures before presenting her petition to city hall, as there are municipal guidelines in place for submitting such items. But Lanctot is undeterred. “I feel if the train whistle is gone, more accidents would start happening,” she said. “In my opinion I feel the train whistle has saved the

lives of many humans and animals and will continue to save many more. “I realize there’s the flashing lights and the barrier at the railroad crossing, but the whistle is an added safety feature so I don’t see a reason to get rid of it. It goes with the saying, ‘It’s better to be safe than sorry,’” City council is expected to receive a report back in the weeks ahead concerning the petition to halt the whistles. Councillors have waded into this debate before, and other communities have in fact instituted whistle bans. Get expert advice today. It’s time for some traffic lights at Tollgate and Vincent Massey Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

It happened again last week. We took our lives in our hands…and tried to cross Vincent Massey Drive at Tollgate Road. It’s one of a few danger zones in the city where one says a little prayer before nudging into traffic - like trying to cross Marleau Avenue from any of its side streets. But over at Tollgate Road the issue can be solved with the installation of a traffic light. It’s not so much the fact that the intersection is busy. Cornwall has plenty of busy intersections. The problem at Tollgate and Vincent Massey is the different grades of the road and the fact that it’s not a true intersection with right angles where a driver can effectively see oncoming traffic. Instead, Tollgate and Vincent includes an approach from the south where one has to drive “up” to the intersection, and because of the weird angle at which the streets intersect, one almost has to unscrew their head from their neck to see what is approaching from the west. If the sun happens to be setting at the time, it feels like trying to find a needle at the bottom of a blast furnace. Speeding traffic on Vincent Massey, which drivers still confuse with an extended section of

County Road 2 (complete with its 80 km/h speed limit) adds to the danger. It’s why a traffic light, in my opinion, makes such sense. And this is a case where people are ACTUALLY ASKING for some changes to the traffic pattern here in Fun City…not like those inane Second Street bicycle lanes that see as many as seven people a month trekking across town. City councillors have been approached by residents, including those who live in the Riverdale neighbourhood, and others who live on streets like Laflin, Dundee and Briar Hill, who want something done about the Tollgate/ Vincent Massey intersection. Apparently the issue is going to be discussed by councillors “sooner rather than later” said one city hall source. Somewhere in the bowels of city hall there is an aged report on the issue of traffic lights (and patterns) around that intersection, I am told. But from a layman’s perspective there’s no real need to study that intersection any more than taking a drive. The intersection, in the words of one decision-maker at city hall “is long overdue for an upgrade.” You got that right. The problem, as it almost always is, remains money. Intersections are not cheap and neither are traffic lights. I’m told traffic lights can cost well into the tens

of thousands of dollars, if not hundreds of thousands (depending on the infrastructure/technology at play) to install. If one begins to alter the grade at the intersection, and realign the road to “fix” the angles of the traffic, the cost of such a project goes through the roof. The city’s cupboard, according to pessimists, is effectively bare. Even the Progress Fund has been reduced to a shadow of its formal self (check out our report at cornwallseawaynews. com). But the question boils down to something simple…how much is human life worth? I can’t believe someone hasn’t been killed while trying to scoot across Vincent Massey Drive at that intersection. Of course I have heard all the suggestions

from critics (see my column against the aforementioned bike lanes) from people who say motorists have to slow down and make room for others using the road. The fact is, though, we don’t. Not me, and not you. We’re a bunch of jerks when we get behind the wheel. If we can get to our destination faster, with fewer speed restrictions, annoying motorists and bike lanes, we’re happy. Anything less sends us into a tizzy that magically forces our right foot down on the gas pedal. It’s not pretty, but it’s true. This is why we often need to be saved from ourselves. In this case, such a savior would come in the guise of a traffic light at Tollgate and Vincent Massey. See you at budget time when this item will be debated – any bets on the final outcome?

Editor: Please refer to your story about opening of a take-out restaurant on Pitt and Third streets under Shawarma on Wheels. As the landlord of the property I can say your reporter has correctly mentioned Mr. Hussain Yassin as its owner. I appreciate when the reporter quotes Mr. Yassin, “All I know is I have the best food in North America.” I would let the local residents give Shawarma on Wheels a fair chance to prove that its food is

best - that means it is healthy, delicious and within the easy means of the residents. I appreciate again when the reporter adds that: “None of the charges or assertions by police have been proven in court.” Yet, most of the story that has appeared in Seaway News is not objective because the reporter goes on padding the story with something that has nothing to do with the restaurant and its service, though the reporter seems to be aware of the Canadian law that conveys that unless it is proven in court,

the city. As a loyal citizen, I appreciate Canadian lawenforcing departments that are the guardians of our democracy. Based on my personal experiences, I have all praise for the Cornwall police. I would encourage police officers to show their objectivity and the Christian values on which Canada was founded by visiting Shawarma on Wheels. Stephen Gill, Cornwall

a citizen is innocent. Unfortunately, this story is to let the business close its doors and move elsewhere. This story does not help landlords who pay taxes, the city who receive less taxes if the businesses remain closed, and local residents who are eager to buy healthy, delicious and less costly foods. Such a media does not help even other businesses like suppliers who also depend on flourishing restaurants. Such stories tarnish the image of the city and discourage other businesses to move in

A collection of musing for the dog days of summer when, as columnist Alan Fotheringham was fond of saying, there seems to be more newsprint than news. While the name of the Prince Edward County winery that launched a new wine in June might not be familiar to most of us, a new label contains a household name, not only in Cornwall but across a wide swathe of the North American hockey landscape. Karlo Estates Winery, near Picton, and Doug Gilmour have teamed up to produce Gilmour Wine that is now filling bottles at the familyowned winery. Doug Gilmour, in case you have just emerged from a cave, is a National Hockey League legend and hockey hall of famer who sharpened his hockey skills during three seasons with the Cornwall Royals that included a Memorial Cup championship team. He just might be the first ex-NHLer, after Wayne Gretzky, to have his name affixed to a wine. The Kingston native is currently general manager of his hometown Ontario Hockey League Frontenacs. There are three Gilmour Wines - Orus, Corazon and Maddison, the latter named after his first-born, Maddison. Perhaps one could say that now the hockey legend has something to wine about. HERE AND THERE Big dose of generosity served up in Kingston. The hospital foundation was half-way to its goal of $6 million for

purchase of a second MRI machine at Kingston General Hospital when a local businessman stepped up to the plate with a cheque for $3 million. ... And just a little further down Highway 401, the Quinte Human Society’s fundraising campaign for a new building got a big boost when a local couple handed the society a cheque for $1 million. ... Wonder how many Ontario police chiefs supported suspending officers charged with a criminal offence without pay when they were members of a police union? The problem is not so much suspension with pay, the problem is that it takes three years or four years to clear a criminal case. But you will never hear a police chief in Ontario criticize a clogged court system that crawls at a snail’s pace and is the root of the suspension with pay problem. THIS AND THAT The Oct. 19 federal election campaign will last longer than the Stanley Cup playoffs. ... The S-D-SG Conservatives came charging out of the blocks but the Liberals and NDP have taken a more, er, conservative approach to plastering the riding with election signs. ... Liberal hopeful Bernadette Clement is taking a leave of absence from city council duties, effective Aug. 31. Of course, if she pulls the biggest upset in local federal riding history - overcoming a 23,000-vote deficit from the last election - she will be giving up her council seat. Strange that this possibility hasn’t been chatted up, unlike the commotion caused when it was thought Brock Frost was pulling the plug. ... Sandasha Ferguson (nee Bough), who grew up in Cornwall, is a school safety officer with the London Police Service.

Viral anti-bullying message now available in both official languages Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A London, Ont. cop who has strong Cornwall roots has taken an anti-bullying message viral - in both official languages. Sandasha Ferguson (nee Bough), who grew up in Cornwall, is a school safety officer with the London service. Part of her duties includes educating young people on the dangers of bullying. She had an idea late last year to combine her love of singing with an anti-bullying message. What resulted was the completion of a music video that has already garnered thousands of hits on YouTube and also caught the attention of media in her new hometown. And after the song was recently translated and rerecorded in French, she can reach a new demographic. “One of the French school boards here in London really wanted to use it in their schools,”

she said. “The school board paid for the song to get translated and the new words fit with the music.” The music video for ‘You’re a VIP’ is directed mainly at young people, especially those who finds themselves in the cross hairs of bullying at school via the Internet. But there’s also a message for adults. “Adults deal with (bullying) on a regular basis,” she said in an interview earlier this year. “And no one is talking about it. No one is saying what is happening to them. “I want to encourage people to talk about it.” Ferguson said one of the difficulties in her quest to sell an anti-bullying message via song was to find material that promoted a positive bottom line. Ferguson retained the services of a Guelph songwriter who composed the music and wrote the lyrics. Ferguson has been an officer with London police for 15 years. ‘You’re a VIP’ is available on iTunes and the video can be viewed on Youtube.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Burrowing into stacks of paperbacks and hardcovers, devouring every word, junior bookworms make it a banner year for the Cornwall Public Library summer reading program. Lyne Lapalme, the library’s head of children’s services, says the program is offered to encourage youngsters to continue their good reading habits while out of school. And they have a whole lot of fun while doing it. The 325 participants read (or were read to) 4,113 books. The club also featured several daytime and evening programs, which were attended by 799 participants. The closing party for members and their families at the Civic Complex Salons on Friday (August 14) featured entertainment by Junkyard Symphony. In addition to complimentary cake and juice, a welcomed consolation prize by all club members, four lucky ones left with an iPad mini. Jacob Lorkobic, 6, held his high up for all to see. “I won!” he exclaimed. His mom, Janice Poirier, says he easily went through over 150 books this summer. “He loved the program, and finished everything put in front of him,” she said. “He’s my little reader.” Abdullah Ilyas won an iPad mini for the second year in a row. “Reading is so much fun. You get to learn new things,” he said. “It’s a nice prize.” His book of choice is anything Pokemon-related. Pierre Dufour, director of communications and programming, says the only requirement to join, other than age (13 and under), was a library card offered at no charge to city residents.

FINCH, Ontario - A deluge of rain in the Cornwall area set the construction of the International Plowing Match’s custom-made electrical grid back by a day or so. Crews with Hydro One were expected to begin construction of the monstrous grid Aug. 12 in Finch, the site of the agriculture spectacle next month. But the construction was delayed because the field was just too wet and could not support the heavy-duty trucks that are now on the land during construction. A media event to kick off the construction took place, but pretty much fizzled when the crews were sent to complete other jobs off-site. “It will still take about six weeks to complete,” said Lyndon MacNaughton, a Hydro One supervisor at the site. The electrical grid, including some 325 poles and more than 19 km of wires and cables, is being built to power up the fair grounds and

Electrical crews get to work after being delayed at the site of the IPM near Finch. nearby RV park. MacNaughton has worked on previous IPM projects in Navan and Carelton Place. He said the biggest challenge of the construction will be to avoid tile drainage infrastructure already in place on farmland just outside Finch, about 25 minutes northwest of Cornwall. “But they have it mapped out pretty good, so we should be ok,” MacNaughton added.

Fundraising for furry friends Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - From homemade catnip to used books and board games, Roy & Cher’s Animal Rescue offered dedicated yard sale shoppers a bargain for a good cause. Organizers of the not-for-profit organization’s second annual yard sale, held in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 parking lot on Sunday (August 16), expect to raise about $1,000. The first edition collected $900. “People were helping unpack boxes before we even opened at 7 a.m.,” said Angela Parker, founder and director of operations. “All fundraisers we have assist animals from abuse, neglect and abandonment.” The group, also known as Roy & Cher’s Rescue Farm, operates as a network of fosters throughout eastern Ontario. It’s main program focuses on feral felines, having them spayed,

and released back into their colonies. “We’re looking for foster homes for feral kittens,” she said. “They need to have a room dedicated to them, it’s only temporary, and to help socialize them. We also need kitten toys and food. If you go to Pet Valu (on Vincent Massey and Eastcourt) or Stacy’s Pet Depot and buy items there for donation, they’ll make sure we get it.” The volunteer-driven organization was founded in July 2013 and operates solely on donations. After attending an animal rights conference in Washington, Parker enlisted Chantal Contois, of Cornwall, and a handful of friends. The local group, named after two cats Parker adopted, started its crusade after several guinea pigs were surrendered to the animal shelter. Both groups work independently towards the same cause.

Proceeds are divided between the local and Ottawa MS Society chapters. “It’s our biggest turnout. This event keeps growing,” said Torrie-Racine. Cyclists have the choice to bus back to the Metcalfe Arena or to continue cycling the following day. Many distances are available to the cyclists participating in this event, including 80km, 100km or 125km (Saturday) and 65km or 90km (Sunday). Those Guys From Athens also includes: Sam Pollock (Darwin’s son), of Sudbury, Dylan Stephenson, of Ottawa, Shirley Lazurko, of Athens, Christine Newman, of Ottawa, and Shane Zurbrigg, of Ottawa. What keeps them geared up for the tour? The team had a few answers: “It’s a day on the bike. The lack of hills on the course. The beer after the ride is pretty good too.”

But it’s helping a loved one overcome a disease that three Canadians are diagnosed with every day keeping them motivated. “It’s extremely important to support the MS Society,” said Pollock. “Research is expensive and there’s always hope for a cure. Through Lucid Eyes inked a deal in July with Famined Records, a Winter Park, Fla. label that has a distribution agreement with longstanding Victory Records. The five-piece of twenty-somethings features Jacob Lacroix-Cardinal (vocals), Ryan O’Grady (lead guitar) Zach Avery, (rhythm guitar), Cameron Bennett, (bass and vocals), and Matt Atchison (drums). “It’s always been a dream of ours, we’re all really proud to be signed,” said O’Grady. Through Lucid Eyes started as a ‘do-it-yourself’ band, writing, recording, producing, and distributing music from their parents’ basements. Following the release of their first self-titled EP in 2014, featuring guest appearances from Jesse Cash of ERRA and Carlo Knöpfel of Breakdown of Sanity, the metalheads say they lost a bit of the drive and passion that made writing music meaningful. “Having a record label invest in us was the spark we needed,” said O’Grady. “Now that Famined Records helps us out with promotion and distribution, we have more time to focus on creating quality music.” The band is working with a professional producer for its upcoming project. pre-production stage, TLE is demoing and tweaking the new material. “Without giving too much away, the themes for our new EP were inspired by our own personal growth and exploration over the last two years,” he said. “Hopefully the combination of strong lyrical content and emotional melodies will hit home.” The first single, ‘Echoes,’ has been released with a music video (https://youtu.be/ B5Xk2yV2zBQ). O’Grady says the track is “the epitome of the style we’ve been working on since our inception.” “For our next release, we’re writing music without trying to please anyone but ourselves,” he said. “Instead of having breakdowns just for the sake of being heavy, listeners can expect more unique melodies and sounds.” Through Lucid Eyes is headlining an all-ages metal show at Vu NightSpot on Friday, August 21, starting at 6:30 p.m. Other acts include Cornwall’s Here Comes Bigfoot and The Observer Effect. The Thirteenth Floor from Ottawa will be opening the show. Tickets can be purchased for $10 from any of the local bands, or for $12 at the door. Even though most have moved away to pursue post-secondary education, everyone in the band still calls Cornwall home.

Through Lucid Eyes performing at Vu NightSpot in Cornwall during the fivepiece’s debut self-titled EP release party in 2014.Matt Dillon “There’s a surprisingly large underground metal scene here,” said O’Grady. “Growing up, there were a few small shows at Murphy’s Inn, but I credit Jamie Maracle and Vu with the revival of the scene.” Headbangers into the fire Through Lucid Eyes members Zach Avery and Cameron Bennett, with the help of local man, Cory Dwyer, saved a baby from a second-storey window in May, as the mom jumped from their burning building. The trio was feted by city council at a special presentation.

Food Lovers’ Field Days: More than a flash in the pan Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Under the heat of competition and the sizzling skillet, chef Ahmad Mansori kept his cool. The owner of downtown Cornwall’s Table 21 and Truffles Burger Bar finished a close second at the annual Iron Pan competition, taking place during the third edition of Food Lovers’ Field Days at Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg, Ont. Mansori’s succulent pork chop topped with fig sauce and herbs wowed the judges at the inaugural competition, but not enough to win him first or second place. “I don’t give up that easy,”he said“I didn’t do this for me. I represent Cornwall and all the good chefs there.” As competitors dueled to win over the judges’ taste buds, hundreds of spectators surrounded their cooking stations. “I’m camera shy, so having people around me is out of my comfort zone. But this year was a little easier,” said Mansori. Chefs were challenged to create a dish using a box of local mystery ingredients, each using a

single cast iron skillet. Competitors had 15 minutes to shop the pantry for ingredients and 30 minutes to cook. FOOD FEST: 14 food trucks means bring your stretchy pants CORNWALL, Ontario - Downtown Cornwall is being transformed into a food lovers paradise this weekend as the inaugural Cornwall Food Fest gets underway. On Saturday 14 food trucks will add to the excellent array of downtown restaurants for a one-day celebration of food and music.

Cornwall Food Fest is a joint effort between Beyond 21 and the Downtown Business Improvement Association, and organizers are hoping the event not only becomes popular with local residents, but also attracts out-oftown visitors. “We will be creating a festival atmosphere in

one of the more vibrant areas of our city,” says organizer Jane McLaren. “Food Fest will offer the opportunity to highlight different tastes that people may not be familiar with, and at the same time help draw attention to all of the wonderful merchants and restaurants that call Downtown Cornwall their home.”

The pros will all tell you the same thing: you have to be in good shape to play golf. Apart from affecting your performance on the golf course, your physical limitations can lead to serious injury. Even though golf is less demanding on the cardiovascular system than activities like hockey, tennis, soccer, or football, it is still very important to prepare for this sport in order to avoid back pain, tendinitis, or muscular pain. Before teeing-off, it is strongly advised to follow a training program. The lower back, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and the torso are the areas of the body most used by a golfer. Training that includes stretching, walking, cycling, and warm-up exercises will help to improve your flexibility and strength. They will also help with

your endurance, an important factor for regular rounds of 18 holes. And don’t hesitate to ask the advice of a golf pro or a physiotherapist about the best posture for a swing. Before each game, take a few minutes to gradually stretch your muscles. Be sure to use suitable equipment; avoid playing with clubs that are too long or too heavy. Because a round of golf represents about 6 km of walking, invest in some good quality shoes, and ensure that your bag isn’t too heavy if you carry it on your shoulders. If you choose a non-motorized golf cart, it is always preferable to push it rather than pull it. Lastly, don’t forget to drink lots of water and to protect yourself from the sun. Mystery solved Thom Racine Good things come to those who wait. Sure it’s cliche, but sometimes that is exactly how to describe what happened this week. In February, I ran this picture looking for information, who was this man and what did his cup represent. There was a theory that it was a photo of Dr. William Knight who, during the mid 1920’s donated a Cup to the local city hockey league which was appropriately called, the Knight’s Cup. Sometimes you can get tunnel vision covering your favourite subjects, it had to be a sports trophy and I hoped one day to unlock the mystery. A week later, we learned that it was not the Knight’s trophy, the Knight family got in touch and confirmed it was not Dr. Knight. Then Darlene Hollingsworth sent a picture of the Knight’s trophy, the cup in the photo was definitely not the trophy I had hoped it would be. It continued, reader Bill Amell got in touch and while searching some old family photo’s, he actually had the very same picture, but had no idea who or why the picture was in his family album. The case of the man and his cup was put into abeyance. There was more history to search out. Out of the blue, enter Rita Sauve. Rita is Bill Amell’s aunt and the two got together recently and while discussing several old family pictures, Rita produced a picture of an elderly couple,

Osias and Rose (Robidoux) Vincent who collected dolls, those big life like dolls from yesteryear. They had what appeared to be hundreds of dolls and doll parts in their home. Then Rita mentioned, “you remember that picture in the paper of the man and his cup, well that’s him.” Bill asked the question...”He was a cheese maker and had produced an award winning cheese that year and received this cup,” Rita said. Well, I’ll be damned as they say, Osias Vincent, the cheese maker and doll repairman and part time bar tender at the old Carleton House Hotel is our mystery man with the cup. Osias Vincent’s cheese shop (possibly Cornwall Gems) was on McConnell and the building still stands today. Of course, I would love to know the name of this trophy, most likely associated to the Cornwall Cheese Board, but I wonder too, where all those dolls went? Case solved. Or, perhaps someone out there knows more?

Why ethnic Canadians are getting sicker Opinion Column – Sultan Jessa A just-released new Canadian study has found ethnics in this country cannot escape from obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and many other diseases. The situation could change if ethnic Canadians make dramatic changes to the way they live and what they eat. I was fascinated by what researchers had to say. Only a few weeks ago, we discussed the same issue during a dinner at a friend’s house where several doctors and medical specialists were present. For some reasons the discussion switched from Bollywood films to medicine and sickness.

It is obvious many of the doctors agreed there was a spike in risk factors because ethnics, not only Asians but also Africans, have switched from what they normally ate in their native countries and have switched to eating at fast food outlets. The diets of ethnics have dramatically changed. No one really cares too much about organic foods. Over the last few decades, the ethnics in Canada are showing more incidents of heart attacks and strokes. As Ontario study determined that from 2001 to 2012, diabetes rates more than doubled among South Asian men and almost doubled

among black women. Also obesity levels rose among all ethnic groups. This was evidence in Asians, Chinese and also people from Africa and the Caribbean countries. “We found that the most striking difference was among the prevalence of diabetes,” said lead researcher Dr. Maria Chiu, a scientist at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) in Toronto. “It was most striking among South Asian men.” The prevalence of diabetes has doubled over the 12 year period. This new study analyzed data from almost 220,000 Ontario residents who responded to

Frozen Celebration Cake

Statistics Canada’s Canadian Community Health surveys from 2001 to 2012. This study established ethnics eat more fatty foods as well as processed foods and often eat between meals. When we were discussing this, some doctors pointed out ethnics have picked up “bad habits” of the fast Western culture. I can speak for myself. Prior to me getting very sick 15 years ago and undergoing a series of stomach series, I decided to switch to healthy eating. My lifestyle had a lot to do with my sickness. I can relate to this new study.

Seemingly, this is an actual interview with 101 year-old Hattie Mae MacDonald of Feague, Kentucky: Reporter: Can you give us some health tips for reaching the age of 101? Hattie: For better digestion, I drink beer. In the case of appetite loss, I drink white wine. For low blood pressure I drink red wine. In the case of high blood pressure, I drink scotch. And when I have a cold, I drink Schnapps. Reporter: When do you drink water? Hattie: I’ve never been that sick.

I said, “No, how are we alike?’’ “You’re both old,” he replied.
