Train whistle issue to go before council this month: petitioner
2 - Thursday, September 10, 2015 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall woman who wants to keep train whistles blasting through the city expects to see the issue come to a head in a few weeks. Kisa Lanctot was told by city staff that councillors are expected to receive a report from administrators Sept. 14, outlining arguments on both sides of a debate concerning the banning of train whistles on Tollgate Road. Nearly 100 people have signed a petition asking that city council stop the whistles, while Lanctot has filed a document in opposition to that move. She said in an interview about 140 names were
included in a hard copy of the petition filed at city hall, while the online version has more than 150. “What I’ve heard from people is that they support the petition and want to keep the whistle,” she said. Proponents of the whistle cite safety as a paramount concern. On the flipside those against the whistles are demanding action from city hall in an effort to make things a little quieter, and point to other whistle bans in Ontario communities as proof they can work without undue risk. Ottawa recently decreed trains stop train whistles at the Greenbank Road crossing. “We’d sure like to be able to sleep with our
windows open in the summer,” said Bob Keenan, one of the 91 people who signed the petition. “It gets pretty loud at three or four in the morning.” Some on the other side of the track are suggesting homeowners who purchased property adjacent to the rails should have known there would be some late-night noise. Keenan is having none of it. “I don’t particularly agree with that,” he said. “If someone was riding around on a motorcycle at three in the morning I’m sure something would be done about that.” Tara Bray, who lives on Branch Drive and whose property backs onto the tracks, said in an interview stopping the whistles presents a double-
edged argument. “I can see the need for the horns but that is also why there are guard bars and flashing lights (at crossings),” she said. “Besides, by the time you hear the train when you are in your vehicle it is too late anyways. “Honestly during the day it does not bother me in the least and with the hum of the air conditioner right now it isn’t too bad at night. There are some trains however who really like to lay on the horn and it can be very bothersome, especially to those with small children.” The petition is asking that both CN Rail and VIA Rail trains cease the practice at the Tollgate Road crossing.

Council files for $5k in expenses in the first half of 2015 Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – City council filed for more than $5,000 in expenses for individual members in the first half of this year. Mark MacDonald leads the way among councillors, accounting for $1,174 spent on everything from the $70 purchase of city apparel to the Lion’s Club Sports Awards banquet tickets that rang in at $140. The whopper, though, was $790 on Cornwall scrapbooks. “I took all the ones that were left,” he said of the books that were produced, in conjunction with Cornwall’s economic development department, and features old photographs of the city. “I’m going to use them over the next four years as souvenirs for people.” Councillors have a budget of $2,500 a year for personal expenses. Coun. David Murphy filed for $632 in expenses in the first half of 2015, much of which was spent on
city marketing merchandise ($300) and business cards ($175). Coun. Bock Frost has filed for $421 in expenses this year, including nearly $400 for “office supplies.” Frost, in an emailed response to Seaway News, said the supplies include a“laptop bag, binders and various stationery. “And a shredder. I shred all documents after each in-camera meeting.” There are some on the flipside who have filed nothing, or close to it, with regard to expenses this year.

Cornwall city council has declared September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and organizers of Paint Cornwall Gold are hoping to bring awareness through a number of events scheduled to take place throughout the month. “We’re hoping that more awareness will lead to more fundraising and research,”added Tourangeau. Donations of at least $2 will get you a Candlelighters gold pin at Life’s Little Pleasures on Pitt Street. Candlelighters is a volunteer organization that provides comfort and resources to young cancer patients being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. CORNWALL, Ontario - Young cancer victims can often feel like they are not only trapped by the disease, they’re also trapped inside their own bodies. To hear Cheryl Tourangeau tell the story of her son Alex and other young people who are taking on terrible diseases like leukemia, it’s no wonder families often feel like their caught in a prison cell. “Sometimes their immune systems are so low you can’t take them out and about because they pick up anything and everything,”said Tourangeau. “But they can still go out in the car.” As September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Tourangeau has organized ‘Paint Cornwall Gold’ in an attempt to get residents and business owners to bathe the city in that colour. It’s part of a larger event that is taking place across Canada to that end - even the CN Tower in Toronto is awash in gold. “So when the kids see that, if they’re driving by, they know that there are people supporting them,” said Tourangeau, whose son Alex was diagnosed two years ago. He is still in the midst of a treatment regimen that is being measured in years. Tourangeau said she knows of at least seven other local young people grappling with the disease in one form or another. “I know there’s more than that, but that’s what I

Possible human smuggling on the river, two Indian men drown CORNWALL, Ontario – Akwesasne police are investigating a potential case of human smuggling that saw two men from India die while transiting the St. Lawrence River on what appears to have been an overloaded Seadoo. On Wednesday the Seadoo capsized east of Cornwall Island, sending three passengers and the driver of the watercraft into the water. Two
of the passengers drowned, while a third was pulled from the river by people standing on the shore. Akwesasne police chief Jerry Swamp said officers are looking at a possible case of human smuggling. “That’s what we’re investigating now,” he said. “We are working in conjunction with Canadian immigration, the U.S. attorney’s office and the RCMP.” The names of the deceased have not yet
been released pending notification of next of kin. Swamp did say the passengers were all male, in their early 20s and came from India but would not disclose a specific region of that country. They appeared to be trying to travel from Canada to the U.S. Swamp said police are working to determine why they were crossing the river on the Seadoo. “Right now there’s no indication they were
connected to anything,” he said. “But we will be doing a full background check on them.” The driver of the Seadoo, Louis J. McDonald, 36, of Snye, Que. Has been charged with two counts of criminal negligence causing death, one count of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and a single count of breaching probation. The Canada Border Service Agency’s enforcement and intelligence branch has had a hand in the investigation.

When I saw that envelope I was holding my breath because I knew it was in the works,” he said. The heritage trust works to mark historical locations throughout the province. Many sites in the province have a blue plaque installed, denoting their status as a heritage trust location. Two local sites include the Cornwall Armoury and St. Andrew’s Church, among others. Brownell sought the position not long after he retired as a Liberal MPP. In a meeting with a staffer from the premier’s office he expressed interest in the trust and was told about six months ago to get his paperwork in order as a spot on the board had opened up.

CORNWALL, Ontario – They say it’s the little things you miss most when travelling, and a pair of Cornwall sisters on the other side of the planet can attest to that. Robyn and Shannon Bedford of Cornwall are both teaching English in South Korea. And while the move to the Pacific Rim has been rewarding on a number of levels, the niceties of good old-fashioned Canadiana is sometimes lacking. “Although it sounds like a Canadian cliché…I miss Canadian bacon and maple syrup,” said Shannon, who teaches at a school in Songdo, about 10 minutes from her new home in Incheon. “Some of the major things I had to get used to was the food, although I love spicy food and I’m pretty open to eating new foods, the meals here are much different than back home. “It is all very healthy. I eat kimchi and rice almost every day.” And there’s the little matter of cramming so many people into such a small piece of geography.
“The one thing I had to get used to was some of the everyday etiquette differences here,” said Robyn, who teaches English at a private school called Avalon in Seongnam. “Personal space is almost non-existent and if people bump into you they won’t apologize.” But that’s not to say the sisters are complaining. Not at all. “I made the move to Korea because I wanted to go out and experience something new,” said Shannon. The Bedfords have been in South Korea since February and signed one-year teaching contracts. After university, I wanted to go out and do some travelling but it was hard to save up the money,” said Shannon. “Teaching in Korea has so far allowed me to save money and Robyn, left, and Shannon Bedford of Cornwall are both teaching English in South I’ve been able to travel within and around Korea. Korea at the same time. After my contract is finished I plan to travel more around Asia.” Often in South Korea accommodations for though it takes some getting used to. Compared to Canadian standards, pay rates “It is difficult sometimes having no prior can seem a bit low. Some schools pay as little as foreign teachers are paid for and furnished and knowledge of the Korean language, you have to $15 an hour for teaching, but the cost of living meals can be much cheaper than in Canada. The Bedford sisters are making inroads when sometimes ‘sign’ your way through some little in South Korea is low too, especially if one lives it comes to communicating in the local dialects, everyday situations,” said Shannon. like a local.

‘Sheldon & Friends’ aims for 7,500 food items Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - From the ashes of a house fire, the Sheldon & Friends Food Drive sparked a local movement to help the Agape Centre in its fight against hunger. Sheldon Veenstra started the annual initiative after his family’s house burned down in 2007. Throughout the harrowing ordeal local support poured in for the Veenstras. The food drive started as a way to pay it forward. After eight years of door-to-door collecting, the results have well surpassed all expectations. In 2014, ‘Sheldon & Friends’ collected 6,500 items. This year, the goal is 7,500.
“I just wanted to give back to the community, and along the way volunteering became a habit,” said Veenstra. “Year after year the food drive keeps growing. But I have to step back a little now for school.” The 18-year-old recently graduated from La Citadelle in Cornwall, Ont., and is attending the University of Ottawa. So in order for the Sheldon & Friends Food Drive to keep its momentum without Sheldon, La Citadelle student Alexandre Cochrane stepped up for the cause. Veenestra will still help organize the food drive in between studying history, and travel home on weekends to collect donations.
“I have some great friends that will keep this food drive going,” he said. “We will also be reaching out to schools, churches, and businesses for support.” The Agape Centre provides food and clothing to more than 1,000 people each month. ‘Sheldon & Friends’ will be canvassing local neighbourhoods for food donations throughout September and October. As a heads up, volunteers donning Agape Centre T-shirts and bags will be passing out fliers in advance of their visit with a ‘wish list’ of healthy food items. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/Sheldon.Friends.
Sheldon Veenstra is ready to hand over the reins of the ‘Sheldon & Friends Food Drive’ to a new generation, while scaling back his role back to study at the University of Ottawa. news A lot of you have asked me why I am running. I am running because of you. I am running because you’ve told me that you want a stronger voice in Ottawa. You want someone with a solid track-record of working and collaborating with stakeholders across our counties. Someone who builds relationships and someone who listens to you. I am running because I don’t want to see so many families, generation after generation, hurting. Everyday at the Legal Clinic I see people struggle with a variety of issues such as unemployment, housing, health care, and elder care. I will work to improve the system for families and not just hand over cheques and cut ribbons.
Great performance The Tagwi Players would like to thank the Maxville branch of Scotiabank for their continued support of the Tagwi Dramatic Arts program. The hilarious farce, “Look, No Hans,” by John Chapman and Michael Pertwee. Once again this year, Scotiabank matched the total of ticket sales through their branch, for a grand total of $1,385. Pictured above are the cast and crew, as well as Scotiabank employees Amando Salazar and Miriam Vallance.
I am running because I believe that fairness is the best policy. Our Liberal childcare plan gives more money to the families that need it, and less to the millionaires. This is fair and puts more of your hard-earned money back in your pockets. I am running because every summer when I was growing up, visiting my grandparents wheat farm in Manitoba, I witnessed first hand the dedication, sacrifice and hard work that our farmers put in day after day, season after season. I know about the levels of debt our farmers must manage in order for them to continue to provide to our communities. I share their frustration with the amount of red tape and increasingly complicated process they must overcome in order to do their job. It’s about time we listen to them.

CORNWALL, Ontario - This job takes a special breed. Thousands of spectators visited Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg between September 5-7 during the annual Horse Lovers’ Weekend. In addition to numerous demonstrations by professional horse specialists, the festivities included horse-drawn wagon rides and boat rides, a horse parade, and a mock horse auction. On Sunday, Spirits in Unity member Yannick Lafrance and his trick pinto pony, Poncho, wowed the crowd with a humorous routine of impressive, high-flying antics. Farrah Green, three-star Parelli professional instructor and horse specialist, rode into the fairgrounds in traditional Spanish wear, holding a Garrocha (long pole). As salsa music rang out, the pair moved with mesmerizing grace and rhythm. This year also paid tribute to the 350th anniversary of the Canadian Horse, an exclusive breed that lives and works at the village.

Caught between a rock, and a hard case CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall woman is fuming after getting caught in a perfect storm of new home construction rules that will see city hall collect a hefty bill. Pamela Carson and her husband Ray are in the homestretch of making a move to Cornwall. Their new home on Kirkman Court comes with a spacious rear patio that, very nearly at the last minute, Carson decided she wanted walled off. No problem - except that city hall is now charging her $2,250 to add a minor variance to the property. What she finds even more confounding is that if she waits until next June - a year from the time she and her husband took ownership - the bill actually drops to about $580. The big question coming from Carson is, why is she paying more now to allow for the minor variance at her home, instead of a year from now? “The issue is the money,” she said in an interview. “There’s a big discrepancy...for the same documentation.

“Quite frankly, why should I pay anything? I paid for the building permit.” That’s true, but after taking ownership of her home Carson and her husband determined that the volume of traffic on nearby Montreal Road, not to mention a bike path that comes very close to her property, would be a distraction on their back patio. So, they applied for a minor variance to turn the patio into a three-season room with walls. The variance was approved - but at a cost of $2,250. Carson was astounded at the bill, and even more incensed because if she waited until next June the fee for the minor variance would have been reduced to $580. “Cornwall says ‘Choose Cornwall,’” said Carson, who was born and raised here before moving away. “But it looks like this was a mistake.” The reason for the discrepancy in fees, said planning manager Ken Bedford, lies in newlyrevamped cost-recovery fees the city has implemented. Bedford said there are different types of fees associated with completing minor variances on Cornwall properties, including those for new

While many municipalities typically have just one fee for such a scenario, Cornwall created two, so that owners of older homes in the city would not be penalized for making renovations or other changes to their property. “We wanted to give some more relief to the older existing development,” said Bedford. “That’s what she’s caught up in, is new construction. If the house was a few years old she’d be paying the $580.” Bedford said the fees are charged so that developers and new home owners are not seeing the construction completed on the backs of tax- Pamela Carson and her husband Ray are in payers via city staff time. City planning should start at home Todd Lihou
todd.lihou@tc.tc
Strategic planning – it sounds about as exciting as an insurance seminar. City council is expected to, finally, sit down as a group for a strategic planning session next week, perhaps as early as Monday before its regular meeting. What it’s supposed to be is a time for civic leaders to come together to map out the priorities for the corporation over the next 10, 15 or 20 years. This new city council, with its rookie-laden roster, has had enough time to get its feet wet and finally dive into some meaty debate concerning the future of Fun City – or so the story goes. I’ve seen more than a few of these kinds of meetings come and go. They’re typically convened in full view of the public, so every member of council does their best to put on a good show. Unfortunately that often means 11 people pulling in 11 different directions when it comes to touting individual pet projects. Will this meeting be any different? We’ll see, because I’m not entirely convinced this particular city council has jelled enough to push for change in any one area in particular. One can see the divisions. Every time Coun. Mark MacDonald gets up to talk about the skyrocketing costs of police, fire and ambulance in Cornwall the eyes of other councillors start rolling. MacDonald, it appears, has let some of that negativity get to him. If left-leaning councillors like Elaine MacDonald or Carilyne Hebert vote for something, you can
surely bet those on the right side of the political spectrum, like David Murphy, will be against it. Coun. Bernadette Clement’s oratory is often noted with raised eyebrows and shrugged shoulders by her colleagues behind the scenes. She’s taken the autumn off to pursue her dream of being MP – again. Some have opined to me that perhaps her heart is in Ottawa with Justin Trudeau (and colleague Brock Frost who apparently lives there now), instead of focusing on her job and responsibilities as a city councillor. I don’t necessarily agree - but that’s what I’m hearing. These issues aren’t discussed all the time, but they are debated enough to suggest to me council’s relationship with itself (and consequently the electorate) is still fractured enough to be concerning. Maybe that’s where this strategic planning session should start - it would certainly help with the spin coming out of city hall. When council was elected late last year I wrote a column suggesting the big priority for this group, at least in the early going, would be improving “transparency and accountability” – in short, the PR department needed an overhaul. Nearly every politician who won election/reelection mentioned that council had to improve on those areas. At the time the belief, both on the street and in some doorways at city hall, was that council had been too secretive. Closed-door meeting investigations, courtroom convictions for employee retaliation and perceived lethargy when it comes to those chemical tanks on the waterfront helped usher in some new blood around the council
table. In short, many wanted change and that’s exactly what they got…but are we any better off? Since the election municipal public relations has been a disaster, thanks to the likes of ‘Rinkgate’, ‘Wormgate’, Quebec police charges and phantom council resignations. Not everything can be laid at the feet of city council, but enough so-called ‘bad press’has been documented so as to take the wind from the sails of the S.S. City Council – almost as the ship was leaving the quay. This brings us back to next week’s strategic planning meeting. Council’s priority, before it tackles any other issue, should be to work through its internal challenges…which often means putting politics aside
– a tough job in an environment that is political by nature. The bottom line councillors must address is simple – what is this city council? The headlines thus far suggest more work needs to be done. One member has already thought of resigning, and changed his mind at the last minute. Another could leave if Liberal voters win the day Oct. 19 in this riding. Some continue to line up along party lines and when others open their mouths they get ridiculed in the process. Not exactly an auspicious start – the good news is there’s lots of time to get it fixed...starting Monday.

Technique is important. Children should be encouraged to brush in gentle circles so they clean every surface and avoid damaging their gums. A small child might enjoy brushing their teeth while imagining the wheels of a train or bus – moving round and round, instead of back and forth. If you purchase a small timer or use an app on your phone, you can make brushing more fun by challenging your kids to brush for two minutes at a time. Kids typically start losing teeth during the elementary school years, between the ages of five and seven, as primary teeth fall out to make

Yellow buses are driving down Cornwall streets again, taking kids back to school after a busy summer. Last column I covered baby and toddler teeth, and this month we’ll brush up on tips to keep school age kids’ teeth in great shape. It’s important to educate your child about how to keep his or her teeth clean to avoid cavities and develop habits that will prevent periodontal disease when they are older. At our clinic, we teach kids how to keep “sugar bugs” at bay, by brushing twice a day,
getting parental help with daily brushing and flossing, and learning which foods to eat in moderation. After long days at school and work, everyone’s tired so dental care can get sidelined at the bedtime rush, which is the most important time of the day to keep teeth clean. Check local store shelves for toothpaste that prevents acid erosion to protect the enamel on your child’s teeth. Remember to keep an eye on the squeeze – kids can load up their toothbrushes but should only be using a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste.

Football brothers will be remembered for all time Claude McIntosh
it is limited to five seasons. Kent was a two-time Canadian Press all-star. In his final season, 1962, he was named to the league “Dream Team” in a poll of coaches. His brother Don spent his career with the Gaels as an offensive and defensive end, and in 1959, with Kent throwing him passes, it had to have felt like Memorial Park days revisited. Both left Queen’s with law degrees. Don moved to Toronto. Kent joined an Ottawa law firm. Kent not only became a successful lawyer specializing in intellectual property law and high technology law - but over the years he planted a deep footprint on the Capital’s booming high tech and financial investment landscapes. He got in on the ground floor of Mitel Corporation, serving as a lead investor and director. Later he took on the same jobs with fledgling Newbridge Networks. His DNA can be found on several other ventures. He served as chairman of a biotech investment firm. He also served three terms on the Queen’s University board of trustees. Away from the office, he became an avid sailor and competed in the Tornado class with the best, nationally and internationally. He was a past president of the Canadian Tornado Association. Kent was inducted into the Queen’s University Golden Gaels’ Football Hall of Fame as a player in 2000. In September, he will be rejoining the Golden Gaels’ Hall, this time as a builder. He was named to the Cornwall Sports
Hall of Fame in 1982. The induction will be posthumously. He died Sept. 2 after a lengthy illness. He was 78. A common neighbourhood sight in the 1950s was Kent and Don Plumley hoofing it over to nearby Memorial Park at Third and Bedford streets for a pick-up touch football game. If, on the rare occasion, and it was rare in those days, nobody else was at the park, Kent would line-up behind an imaginary offensive line, set up the snap with “hut 1, hut 2, hut 3”, take two or three steps back and fire a pass to his brother, who was always in the clear. The brothers who grew up on Clark Avenue, just off Third Street West, sons of a Howard Smith Paper Mill employee, played other sports but their game was football. At Cornwall Collegiate, Kent became quarterback of the Golden Raiders. In 1955 he guided the Raiders to an undefeated EOSSA regular season but the CC squad lost the championship game to cross-town rival St. Lawrence Saints. It was a script played out too many times over the years for the title thirsty Raiders. The Plumleys went on to be one of the best brother tandems in Queen’s University Golden Gaels’ football history. Kent cracked the talented varsity lineup as a defensive halfback and safety but in his second season, 1959, coach Frank Tindall gave him the starting QB job. He was named team captain. The next season he returned to his defensive position when veteran QB Cal Connor returned to Queen’s and enrolled in medical school. In those days, you could play varsity football until, as the saying went, the cows came home. Now

AKWESASNE POWWOW: The fun takes place on the weekend Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A celebration of First Nation culture is branching out a bit this year, with the addition of traditional dancers from Mexico. The Akwesasne Powwow, a colourful display that typically draws thousands of people to Cornwall Island, will see Aztec dancers from Mexico City perform a pair of shows on the first day of the event. “We want the powwow to become a learning tool and a way to bring other cultures together,” said Romaine Mitchell, co-chair of the 2015
Akwesasne Powwow. Mitchell said the dancers were at the powwow a few years back, and most recently a group of dancers from Africa performed on Cornwall Island. “The passion that these dancers bring is just incredible,” he said. But there’s also plenty of homegrown passion, as singers, dancers and drummers from First Nations perform in traditional ceremonies and competitions. The powwow takes place Sept. 12 and 13 at the A’Nowara’ko:Wa Arena on Cornwall Island. Doors open both days at 10 a.m. and the popular “grand entry” takes place at noon on Day 1.

Hostage turned humanitarian speaks at CTC breakfast CORNWALL, Ontario - Hostage-turnedhumanitarian Amanda Lindhout believes life’s trauma should refine us, not define us. That’s one of the core messages she’ll highlight Oct. 21 as guest speaker at the annual Celebrity Walk and Breakfast sponsored by the Children’s Treatment Centre. While working as a freelance journalist in southern Somalia, Lindhout was kidnapped in August 2008 by teenage insurgents from an Islamic fundamentalist group. She was repeatedly tortured and brutalized during 460 days of captivity but refused to let her tormentors break her spirit or her belief in the basic goodness of humanity. “I went through an extremely trying ordeal,” she says, “but I never forgot the world outside was a beautiful place.” Since her release, Lindhout has devoted her life to sharing that beauty, even in the country that stole her freedom. As a writer and speaker, she’s a passionate champion of
forgiveness, compassion, education, and women’s rights. Once back in Canada, Lindhout studied development leadership at St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia before setting up the Global Enrichment Foundation. That charity works annually to send 100 Somali women to university, and prepare others for professional careers. Lindhout has also faced her fears head-on, returning to Somalia to help distribute famine relief. Two years ago, she co-wrote the New York Times bestseller, A House in the Sky: a Memoir, detailing her early life, international travels, and captivity. She says the book’s title came from her need to find a safe place in her mind where “there was no violence being done to my body and where I could reflect on the life I had lived, and the life that I still wanted to live.” Her speech at the Celebrity Walk and Breakfast, starts at 7:15 a.m. at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

The Force is with BBBS CORNWALL, Ontario - CotiCon and Capital City Garrison stormtroopers have stepped up and donated $400 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District. “It’s always a great feeling to give to a worthwhile community project,” said Annie DeRochie, CoTiCon (Cornwall’s Tiny Convention) organizer. “BBBS offers such a wonderful program to youth
in our area.” The donation stems from a collaboration with Ottawa-based The Capital City Garrison, which is part of the 501st Legion - a Star Wars costuming organization comprised of and operated by fans. During the second annual convention on August 22, a booth manned by stormtroopers
accepted donations for photos and a chance to duel with ‘Vader’s Fist’. Items were also collected from various local businesses, and a Chinese auction, as well as entrance fees contributed to the $400. “We hope to raise the bar next year. Our new goal is $1,000,” said DeRochie. The teen entrepreneur is off to college this

Bony to beastly: Berry muscles his way to the top Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Now that he’s achieved his dream of becoming ‘Mr. Junior Natural Canada’ – Cornwall-born Joey Berry has his sights set on the international arena. The 23-year-old ANS Performance sponsored athlete dominated at the Canadian Bodybuilding Federation (CBBF) 2015 Natural Canadian Championships - IFBB World Qualifier in Toronto, Ont., on August 22. Berry took top spots in Juniors and Men’s Classic, as well as second place in Men’s Middleweight. “The sacrifices, extreme work ethic, dieting, training, and everything I’ve done leading up to this show have definitely paid off,” said Berry. His next goal is to compete in the IFBB World Championships to represent Canada, or as Berry refers to it: the ‘Olympics’ of natural bodybuilding. The transformation from skinny wimp to flexing muscleman started at 15 years old, when his brother, Randy ‘The Rage’ Berry, reigning champion of Ottawa-based Big Time Pro Wrestling, set up a home gym in the basement. Within a week he started training at Physical Limits.
At 18, Berry registered in his first competition. “To keep it very short, I won first place and landed a huge supplement sponsor. That’s when the competitive journey began,” he said. Following several impressive victories came a crushing personal loss. In memory of his father’s passing, Berry put blood, sweat, and tears into the next competitions, including a provincial qualifier. Once again, he emerged victorious. Berry took a two-year break from competing to focus on fitness modeling. He quickly landed calendar covers, magazine features, and ad campaigns, as well as a Las Vegas photo shoot. But he still envisioned being ‘Mr. Junior Natural Canada’. Shortly after returning to bodybuilding, Berry was signed by supplement company ANS Performance. “They’ve already helped me out so much and I couldn’t be any happier to represent such an incredible team,” he said. Currently, Berry’s living in Ottawa for schooling, conveniently close to his original stomping grounds. “Cornwall has always been home for me,” he said. “The support I receive from the city is overwhelming.”

Berry credits bodybuilding for giving him discipline, determination, and countless opportunities. “It’s made me the man I am today,” he said.

Bold, exterior colour is something we love to see on holiday homes in exotic places. Why is it then that we shun it for the exterior of our own home? While we want our paint investment to stand the test of time and feel it should blend into the streetscape, colour experts like Janice Lindsay of PINK colour + design tell us that the back of our house can tell quite a different colour story from the front. “It may seem strange to choose a different palette for the back,” says Lindsay, “but in fact, we use the back of our home quite differently.” The back is more personal and less formal, she observes. “And since you never see the front and back at the same time, they don’t have to be the same colour.” Lindsay advises to make a smooth transition on the side, and then do what you like. Have fun. “Think about where you would like to vacation, and choose your backside colours to take

pH is a chemical symbol that expresses the degree of alkalinity or acidity of a solution. The pH scale runs from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. The higher the number, the more alkaline; the lower, more acid. Most of the soils we clean up every day, including fats, oils, greases, protein, body discharges, and most foods, are mildy acid (have a pH below 7). Because acid soils are more easily removed by alkaline solutions and vice versa, the majority of soaps, detergents, and cleaning products are alkaline (have a pH above 7). There are some alkaline soils and stains, however, and these are most effectively dealt with by acid cleaners. Alkaline soils include lime scale (hard-water deposits), rust stains, tannin, and food stains such as coffee, tea, mustard, and liquour.
you there. It will feel like you are on holiday every time you step outside,” she says. From the PPG Pittsburgh Paints Voice of Colour palette, Lindsay offers this guide to colour holiday destinations: • Whites like Winter Mood (512-1) are tropical. Add indigo blue to white for the Mediterranean (Blue Odyssey, 347-6). • Pastels are Miami in general and South Beach in particular. Try Cedar Beige (227-4), Frosty Glade (256-4), or Bleached Spruce (208-4). • Blacks and charcoals on the body and trim look Japanese. Try Black Magic (518-7), or Black Elegance (531-7). • Ochre and sienna (Toffee Crunch, 216-4) evoke Tuscany or the South of France. • For the warm and rustic feel of Mexico check out the sunny yellows and oranges of the Hacienda Style collection at voiceofcolour.com. • A mix of bold colours can be Jamaica or Latin America. (Look at your summer wardrobe for inspiration.) • Mixed greens melt structure into foliage and enhance the garden experience. (All greens look good together.) Some of the same rules do apply to back and front. The eye is attracted to the brightest or lightest things, so avoid white on trim unless you have really great trim. Instead, go tone-on-tone and make the trim a lighter or darker version of the body colour. Warm grey works with all colours. Paint out ugly things in the body colour so they disappear. If you want flowers or special features to stand out, give them a backdrop of greyed or dark colours. Painters always advise to invest in top quality exterior paint. From PPG, for example, the Manor Hall Timeless exterior line is self-priming, bridges cracks, gives one-coat coverage in many cases and comes with a lifetime guarantee. They say the modest incremental cost is well worth it. If you want to use bold colours but feel cautious, use them close to ground level where they are less obvious to neighbours, can be easily changed but still show personality where you can see and enjoy it. Don’t worry that summer colours may seem a little odd in the winter. You won’t be sitting out there in the cold months.

SUMMER - THE SEQUEL?: Weather Network forecasts warmer temps into fall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - If you’ve enjoyed the warm, rain-free days of late The Weather Network has some good news for you. The agency released its annual autumn forecast last week, which predicts a gradual cool down over the course of autumn in the Cornwall area. “Fall is a transition season,” said Kelly Sonnenburg, a Weather Network meteorologist. “We have two patterns set up for the fall. The first one will see temperatures at or slightly above seasonal.” But things won’t last that way. “We’ll see a flip of a switch in mid- to late

October,” Sonnenburg said, adding that’s when temperatures are expected to take a plunge. By the time November and December roll around, it will start to look and feel like winter is fast-approaching. “We can’t rule out some late fall snowfall,” she said. The main driver of the fall weather pattern is El Nino, a mass of warm sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. Sonnenburg said the fall precipitation models suggest that as long as the warm weather remains, it will be drier in our region. But when temperatures begin to fall, weather systems will become a little more unsettled. Fall officially begins Sept. 23.

Unfortunately, history tends to repeat itself. World War One, billed as, ‘The War to End all Wars’, was followed by World War Two. The Titanic foundered in icy waters, an inquiry that was to end all such tragedies was held, but ships, such as the Costa Concordia, still run afoul of perils. Twenty years ago, almost to the day, I shared my thoughts about the loss of Kara, our sixteen year old daughter, who died in a tragic single car accident just one mile west of our Williamstown home. The words that appeared in my StandardFreeholder Hometown column, “From My Desk”, were inspired by the eulogy given at Kara’s funeral by her sports coach. He told of Kara’s determination to do her best in seemingly impossible situations, perhaps fail, but just kept on going. He told of how Kara would attempt to return a volleyball serve that was obviously too difficult to punch back over the net. She would make a valiant effort, fail, fall flat on her face, skin her knee, but just get up, ready to deal with the next serve. Life goes on, and our family history repeated itself on Sunday July 26, 2015. Our elder son Kyle, age 40, died while speed-flying off The
Chief, a 2,297 foot high granite monolith that overshadows Squamish B.C. On some previous flights, he was able to land next to the home that he and Krista Besner, his wife, shared. On Wednesday August 12 Kyle’s widow gave birth to their daughter, Everleigh Skye Besner-Wolochatiuk. A new life begins, life goes on. Kyle lived for adventure and adrenaline rushes. He pushed the limit in snowboarding, kayaking, mountain biking and in his latest passion, speed-flying. This time the odds caught up with him. What’s the moral to this story, what’s the purpose of this column? It serves to drive home the saying, “History repeats itself.” However, I have several other reasons for once again sharing my post-tragedy thoughts. The first is that everyone mourns differently. For some, tears, and perhaps anger or acceptance, come instantly; for others it’s a latent time bomb that operates on its own schedule. Secondly, the most eloquent thing you can do when you meet a person who has been bereaved is to just give a big, lingering hug and be available with an attentive ear. The third message comes to me from Kara: when life serves you with a seemingly impossible serve, make a valiant effort, give it a try, be ready to fall flat on your face, but get up and be ready for the next serve. Life goes on.
