Good samaritan still haunted by images from river tragedy Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Raymond Burelle only recently went back into the water - because it’s the place this summer where he saw how tragic life can be. The Cornwall man was dubbed the “good samaritan” in July when he jumped into the water west of the city in an effort to save the life of local filmmaker John Earle, who died after suffering a heart attack while on a dive. In the days and weeks since the event Burelle – an experienced diver who only a few days ago went back to his hobby - has been plagued by
images from the day, which flashed vividly in his mind. Sleeping became an ordeal, and so did work - he’s currently on stress leave as a result of the event. While at the same time suggesting he’s “dealing” with the trauma as best he can, Burelle is critical of a system where professionals like firefighters, police and paramedics have quick access to counselling services, and so-called good samaritans do not. “They have all the resources they need,” he said from his Cornwall home Monday. “But for someone who is a good samaritan...they go because it is the right thing to do.” Immediately following the tragedy Burelle was offered an hour’s worth of free counselling by a local agency. Since then similar services have been hard to come by. An ironworker by trade, Burelle said he’s still on stress leave. “You don’t realize how it will affect you until it happens to you. It affects you...um...,” and then Burelle’s voice trails off. He and his family were out boating on the St. Lawrence River west of Cornwall July 18. He had just tied his boat to a dock at Guindon Park and was looking to fetch his truck to pull the watercraft from the river when people began noticing a diver in trouble on the water. Burelle raced to his boat and carefully navigated the rock-filled basin where the diver was in trouble. Burelle grabbed a life-jacket and jumped into the water to try and help. Burelle had to grapple with what he was seeing in front of him, and the frantic cries from Earle’s

that he did everything correctly at the scene, Burelle is still grappling with his actions. “There are times when I say ‘Oh my god, what did I do?’” he said. “There’s still some doubt in your mind. That doubt will always be with you.” Blais told Seaway News in an interview in the days following Earle’s death that an autopsy report indicated he suffered a massive heart attack, and his death was not in any way related to the dive. “The doctor said it could have happened during a bike ride or even a walk,” she said. “It was just the physical exertion.” Despite the trauma, Burelle said there is a sliver of a silver lining. “It has really brought my girlfriend and I closer,” he said.“I used to think that I was invincible. But this has made me more aware…more cautious.”

wife, Alyssa Blais, who began swimming to her husband. “I shouted to her‘Sweetheart, you don’t want to be here,’”recounted Burelle, who knew Earle was in serious trouble. “I tried to keep her busy.” Blais swam out anyway, and was handed a lifejacket from another boater in the area. After Earle was transported to shore, Burelle got Blais back into his boat and took the two to the dock. After tying up his boat, and seeing the ambulance pull away, Burelle said the trauma of the event finally hit home. “I just started shaking like a leaf in a windstorm,” he said. “As soon as I got to that dock I had a complete breakdown. “I had to have someone else pull my boat out.” Despite being told by emergency professionals

Lauzon opens campaign office Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Conservative MP Guy Lauzon officially opened his Pitt Street campaign office with over 350 supporters cramming the parking lot on Saturday. The incumbent MP of Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry is seeking his fifth term when voters go to the polls on October 19th for the federal election. In 2011, he was elected with 62 per cent of the vote.
“I’ve had six campaigns, but this is the most important election,” said Lauzon. “Do you realize what we’re facing? Can you imagine if we don’t win this election? Think of the alternatives that we have...It’s not a very pleasant thought.” The campaign office is located at 900 Pitt Street, and runs from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The office number is 1-844-VOTEGUY (868-3489). Lauzon opened the doors on August 3, day one of the campaign. “On October 19th we’re going to choose a
government to protect our fragile economy for the next four years,” he said. “Among the global economical turmoil are choices, real consequences. The wrong government decision on taxes and spending or deficit can affect the fragile economy, causing business closure, downsizing and job loss in our community. That, we don’t want. The economy is our government’s number one priority, with a $5 billion surplus so far, and we’re pursuing a low tax, balanced budget program to protect Canadian jobs and
growth in our economy. The Liberals have announced they will run multi-year deficits.” Lauzon then “compared the three options” from which the crowd has to vote (Conservative, Liberal, NDP - although the Green Party is still an option, just ask SDSG federal candidate Elaine Kennedy). “You’ve heard lots of spin, and maybe the Conservatives have spun a little bit – I dare say the other parties are spinning a lot more,” he said.
Harper absent from health care debate with provinces: Clement CORNWALL, Ontario – Liberal candidate Bernadette Clement slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper Monday for not engaging with provincial premiers over crucial health care funding. She said Harper has been absent from the debate over health care with his provincial counterparts who fund those ministries, and
suggested he has only taken part in conversations “when he absolutely has to. “The last few years the federal government has not been at the table. We have a prime minister who doesn’t meet with the premiers.” But incumbent Conservative candidate Guy Lauzon was having none of that. “The Conservative government increased funding (to the provinces) by 70 per cent…in nine years,” he said, and then chided the Liberal

Ontario government for not using that money effectively for health care expenditures. “Health care is critical – when you go to the door it’s the second most important issue people want to discuss.” Green party candidate Elaine Kennedy suggested her party would work to ensure health care starts with a living wage. “We believe everyone should have the medicines they need,” she said. “But we believe in preventative medicine as well. One of the things we can do is for people to keep them healthy is to have a guaranteed income.” Topics at the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce event shifted to the local economy as well, with nearly every candidate for MP in the Cornwall area wanting more engagement with young entrepreneurs if they’re elected next month. They agreed to engage more with young professionals, though incumbent Guy Lauzon suggested the problem could be apathy from the
electorate. “When I was first elected I held town hall meetings,” he said. “The first one I held there were 80 people. The last one I had, we had three. “The ongoing challenge is for me to get input.” Bernadette Clement, who is carrying the Liberal banner during this campaign, suggested the focus needs to be on young professionals, including entrepreneurs, who want to grow the economy through small business. “If you were to meet regularly with young people…you shouldn’t just do it at election time,” she said. “Meetings all the time – town hall meetings. It’s striking to me how much people want to be heard and take care of opportunities to be engaged. The best way is just to talk to people.” NDP candidate Patrick Burger did not attend the event, which took place at Truffles on Pitt Street. The election is Oct. 19.

Remembering a pioneer in the local battle against multiple sclerosis Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Joan Pearson infected everyone around her with a fierce courage in the face of multiple sclerosis – so much so that a dear friend named her son after one of the corner stones of the local MS Society office. “When I had Jay in 1989 I named him after her – her maiden name,” said Karen Torrie-Racine, of her son Jarrett. “She was the foundation of our chapter and who we are.” Pearson was also a shoulder to lean on. Her
battle against MS and the complications it can create ended last Thursday when Pearson passed away. She was in her 70s. Torrie-Racine, her voice quaking with emotion, said Pearson was a Joan Pearson rock, despite being diagnosed in 1968. “Joan was the first person I told when I was diagnosed in 1985,” said Torrie-Racine. “She and
some other people with MS started our chapter in 1968 and she was still an active member of our board until about five years ago.” After that the complications of living with MS, including scleroderma - a chronic hardening and contraction of the skin and connective tissue – began to take its toll as well. “They were just more than she could handle,” said Torrie-Racine, who preferred to dwell on the way Pearson lived. “She was such a trooper. “She taught me a lot and how to deal with living an autoimmune disease. You can be better than the illness and stronger than the illness. I’ve
always strived to be – well, I can’t be half the person she was - but I want to live within her legacy.” That legacy is expected to be debated by the local MS Society board soon, where it is expected one of the hallmark events the agency puts on will be renamed in Pearson’s honour. “It was all about her kindness and her strength,” said Torrie-Racine. Pearson is survived by her husband Gary and her children Lori (David) and Scott (Debbie) and grandchildren, Haylee Morgan, Chase and Trinity Pearson. The funeral was held Tuesday.

Kids Expo returns to Cornwall Civic Complex Oct. 3 Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Parents of young children in Cornwall looking to connect with like-minded people should be impressed with the Second Annual Kids Expo this year. The Oct. 3 event will see a variety of local youth programs, sports and fitness groups, businesses, clubs, and various resources fill the salons of the civic complex. With dozens of booths to choose from, patrons will be able to see model trains, slot racing, a Pokemon tournament, clay creations, face painting and interactive lights and lasers. “It’s just a good chance to meet and network,” said coorganizer Ginny Pereira. “Cornwall is really good for sports, but
the other aspects of being a kid should be discussed and there should be information available. “We want to show what’s available in Cornwall for families.” The event runs in conjunction with the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of SDG purple ribbon campaign launch in Lamoureux Park. The popular paper bag pop, which is meant to symbolize renewed focus on issues of child abuse, will take place in both the park, and the complex. “The two events just seem to fit really well together,” said co-organizer Mai-Liis Renaud. The Kids Expo is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct, 3. Donations are being accepted for the Jump Start Program.

NEWS
Coppers and Littles cast a line Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The catch of the day wasn’t always a fish. With a flick of the wrist, the worm-filled hook went sailing across the St. Lawrence River, plunging deep into the slow tide. Ijaz Mohmand, 24, and Luke Jamieson, 15, waited for a bite, nibble, tug, any sign of a fish, perched on the dock alongside the river behind the RCAF Association Wing #424 on Saturday (September 19). For the second year in a row, the ‘Big’ and ‘Little’ came up empty-handed at the annual Kids, Cops & Canadian Tire Fishing Days in Cornwall, but you couldn’t tell by their smiles. “It’s about the quality time together – we get to catch up on things,” said Mohmand. In November 2014, he moved from Cornwall to Ottawa. But after a year of playing outdoor hockey and soccer, going to NHL games and zip-lining, the match is still going strong. “It’s been great, and a lot of fun,” said
Jamieson. Mohmand would only change one thing about his first experience as a Big Brother. “I wish I started sooner,” he said. “I thought I should give back to the community and have a positive impact on someone.” Children of all ages casted a line into the St. Lawrence with members of local law enforcement, including the Cornwall Community Police Service, Cornwall Police Association, and RCMP as well Ministry of Natural Resources representatives. The event supports Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Cornwall & District. Every youngster that attended went home with a fishing rod, tackle box, lunch bag, T-shirt, hat, rain poncho, and fishing book. “It definitely breaks down barriers,” said CCPS Const. Pat Hyugen. “The kids that participate feel that police are more approachable and they’re more open to speaking to us and less shy.” Fifteen Littles attended the event, in addition to several youths and teens who
Pictured are, CCPS Const. Pat Hyugen, Vanessa Primeau, case worker with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, Savanna, Trinity, Bernadette Lapierre. Adam Brazeau followed the smell of BBQ and flashing blue and red lights to the scene. Participants rotated between cruising in a police boat, fishing with MNR reps, and group-fishing on the shore. “It’s a free event that our Bigs and Littles
get to come to and have a regular day that most kids don’t always get to get,” said Vanessa Primeau, BBBS case worker. “Last year it rained, so this year was wonderful. We had a good turnout. And we’re very thankful that they put this on for us.”
Terry Fox Run draws hundreds, raises $20,002 CORNWALL, Ontario - The Terry Fox legacy is still running strong in Cornwall at 35. The annual run saw 358 participants raise $20,002 on Sunday (September 20). “I never set a goal – I always just want the
community to do whatever they can to support the Terry Fox Foundation,” said event organizer Josée Sauvé. “We didn’t beat last year’s total, but I’m not disappointed. In 2014, we had a one-time personal donation of $5,000 – that doesn’t happen often. I am incredibly proud of Cornwall for pulling together and raising what we could for Terry.”
Since organizing her first run in 2006, Sauvé hasn’t looked back. For a decade of service, SDSG MP Guy Lauzon presented her with a certificate of achievement, an accolade she received earlier in the year from the Terry Fox Foundation. The second Sunday after Labour Day is now officially Terry Fox Day in Ontario.

Do-gooder’s mission to Uganda ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A semi-retired Cornwall school teacher is taking her expertise on a charity mission in East Africa. Hélène Sauvé is spending November in Kamengo, Uganda, as part of a volunteer team providing childhood education and primary health care services, through the Canada Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA), an Ottawa-based non-governmental organization. “We are fortunate here in Canada with what we have. It’s important for us to reach out to these communities,” said Sauvé. “Imagine if everyone helped out for a few weeks, how much better the world would be.” The total cost of the two-week mission is $5,160 ($2,820 medical/educational supplies and $2,500 flight). The active volunteer leaves on November 12. She will be assisting in triage throughout the day, and teaching in classrooms during nights and weekends. Sauvé has already saved up 500 pencils to give away, amongst other items. In June, the avid traveller completed a 12-day, 240-kilometre pilgrimage from Montreal to Ottawa with five friends. But this is her first visit to Africa. Sauvé will be staying
with a local family, sleeping four per room in bunk beds. “I’ve never done anything like this before,” she said. Sauvé has been a teacher for over 32 years; a few decades spent at Central Public School in Cornwall. She is also a long-standing member of the Cornwall Rotary Club and the Catholic Women’s League with St. Peter’s Parish. “Education has been my life. Every single day I try to help as many people as I can,” she said. To raise funds for the CACHA mission, the UCDSB substitute teacher is hosting a spaghetti fundraiser and silent auction at Knights of Columbus (205 Amelia Street, Cornwall) on Friday, October 2. The event runs from 5-8 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti and meat sauce, garlic bread, Caesar salad, coffee and tea, and homemade dessert. The evening’s soundtrack - a toe-tapping mix of traditional and modern Irish folk - will be provided by local band Twisted Kilt. In addition, Sauvé has been collecting funds with her baking skills, selling “healthy” muffins to church-goers and supporters. Tickets are $15. They can be purchased at Centre Charles-Emile Claude (146 Chevrier Ave., Cornwall) and by calling 613-933-5099 or 613-932-3954. For more information, visit www.cacha.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - If the early returns are any indication, Shorty Jenkins will be coming back to Cornwall. While nothing concrete has been released, the response from organizers, officials at the Cornwall Curling Centre and (perhaps most importantly) the curlers themselves is the Shorty Jenkins Classic held over the weekend was an unqualified success. “The curlers loved it,” said Gord McCrady, one of the organizers of the World Curling Tour event that had to move to Cornwall from Brockville following a compressor issue at the facility in that city. “They said they would come back in a heartbeat.” But an official decision on whether the Shorty is played in Cornwall next year or returns to Brockville - its home for 18 years - won’t be made for weeks. “We can’t say yes or no yet,” said McCrady. “Once we know for sure we’ll do a press release.
“It’s a huge event. There’s wall-to-wall people. It can be stressful for some members of the club, and great for others.” John Dilabio, a longtime member of the Cornwall club and one of the local volunteers to help with putting the Shorty together in just 17 days, said his club wants it back next year. “The response was phenomenal,” he said. “We were overwhelmed by the support from the community.” Dilabio said the Cornwall club’s board of directors will meet soon to complete a postmortem on the event. He agreed it’s too early to make a pronouncement on the 2016 event, but concedes Cornwall wants it. “Of course we do,” he said. “But things have to be discussed with our board, Gord McCrady and the Shorty Jenkins family.” Hundreds of people took in the event in Cornwall last week, which saw the Brad Gushue rink, and the Kim Eun Jung (South Korea) capture the men’s and women’s titles, respectively, on Sunday.

JUMP! A look back at some good (and not so good) parachutes Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com Years before aircraft were invented, about 1485, a bright lad by the name of Leonard V. drew a sketch of something that would allow someone (definitely someone else) to jump out of a flying machine and land on the ground. For several obvious reasons, Leonard did not make or use one, something now known as a ‘parachute’. In 1912, Franz Reichelt tested his own version by jumping off the Eiffel Tower. Unfortunately for him, it was a complete failure. He never got a
chance to go back to the drawing board. It seems it’s safer to jump from aircraft rather than a tower. Grant Morton proved that by being the first to do it successfully, at Venice Beach, California, by jumping from a perfectly good Wright Model B airplane. (West Coast folks are known for doing strange things.) Military observers went aloft in tethered hydrogen-inflated balloons during WW I. As soon as they saw enemy aircraft approaching, they made use of parachutes to vacate the premises. Smart move! German fighter pilots were issued parachutes during that ‘War to End All Wars’. Unfortunately,
one of them whose life was saved was Hermann Göring. I’d count his successful use of a parachute was unfortunate for the rest of the world. In 1945 Göring had another successful escape. This time it was through his use of cyanide to escape the death sentence pronounced by the Nuremburg trials. During WW II, generals made it all the rage to have men parachute from perfectly good aircraft. “What a marvelous way to go to war!” they decided. “No days and days of bumpy rides in the back of trucks and in tanks.” If you saw the movie “Bridge Too Far”, or if you read the novel of the same name, or if you were one of the 20,011 men
who parachuted into Holland in September 1944, you will never forget what Operation Market Garden was all about. After the war, parachuting took on a new life; this time it was just for fun, the adrenaline rush of sky-driving, free-falling, base jumping and a bizarre one known as wing suit - ‘squirrel suit’ - flying. In next week’s column, I’ll share with you some more recent parachuting stories, one of which took place northeast of Cornwall, at about 10,000 feet, in the chilly air above the Alexandria airfield.

We’re still clearing away the party favours and chicken wing bones, so forgive us if the place is still a little messy. WHERE’S THE FIRE? Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy is playing his cards pretty close to his chest on the firefighter arbitration hearing that took place last week. Publicly the mayor tried to contain his disappointment (read: anger) with the submission put forward by the firefighter union that calls for everything from hefty pay hikes (8.6 per cent) to better vacation allotments and holiday cash outs. Said one city councillor (not Mark MacDonald) last week: “We expected them to come in and ask for the stars...but this is like reaching for Uranus.” O’Shaughnessy, when asked if the firefighters were asking for too much, suggested such a premise is an understatement. Insiders tell me the mayor and much of city council said a whole lot more behind closed doors when the submission was discussed last week. Council is not happy…not one bit. We’re still waiting for the city to release an official response to the submission. One has been filed with the arbitrator but the rest of us (who will actually be paying for the arbitration award via our taxes) are still waiting…tick tock.
Union president Jason Crites told me last week the firefighters felt caught between a rock and a hard place, because in the days leading up to the arbitration hearing they still had not yet received the counterproposal from city hall – so they left their submission intact. “We didn’t want to pull it apart at the last minute, so we left everything in there,” he said. Once again, the firefighters find themselves on the short end of the PR stick. Taxpayers will be pleased to know the arbitration award is for an already-expired contract with Cornwall firefighters. Dates are now being set to renegotiate this deal because it will have expired before the retro paycheques are signed. LODGE PHARMACY You have to wonder if municipal managers sometimes leave city hall, following a council meeting, and go home to kick the dog. Such may have been the case last week when finance manager Maureen Adams was grilled for doing her job - finding a suitable candidate to fill a soon-to-be vacant contract for pharmaceutical services at the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge. Councillors, with politics playing a huge role in full view of the TV cameras, voted to turn down Adams’ suggestion for a new service provider because it is not a local firm. Of course it makes good political sense to fill tenders and requests for proposal with as many local firms as you can – but when you can’t, does it make sense to throw your people under the bus…and in the process leave yourself open to
a lawsuit? That’s exactly what council did last week, with many voting against Adam’s suggestion. Proponents of a local-first mentality on this subject seem to want Medical Arts Pharmacy (Located on Montreal Road) to fill the vacancy at the lodge. Of course Medial Arts is a fine local business and I’m sure they would do a good job…the issue I have is with council’s short-sighted decision last week and the message it sends. If I’m a business owner, why would I bother making a submission to city hall on anything from stocking paperclips to replenishing toilet paper if I thought the tendering/selection process was also subject to the political whims of the day? The short answer is…I wouldn’t, as a
business owner my life is likely to be complicated enough. The other more important issue the city is likely to find itself grappling with is a big fat lawsuit from the fine people at Classic Care Pharmacy in Nepean. They were deemed (through a squeaky-clean selection process) to be the best candidate to fill the role at the lodge. Adams told councillors the city should brace for a court date for not going with Classic Care. Council, with almost a cavalier mentality (councillors Claude McIntosh and David Murphy voted to go with Adam’s recommendation), said to hell with that and voted against Classic Care anyway. Sigh…
letters Editor: My name is Kisa Lanctot, I recently started a petition to save the train whistles near Tollgate Road. As I was looking through the Seaway News I saw a Letter to the Editor written by Linda Meikle stating that I “should be disqualified based on age”. I have never met this lady before, and she states that I attend St.Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School, and that I don’t pay taxes. First off, I do not attend St.Joseph’s Catholic
Secondary School, I graduated in June 2015 and I am attending St.Lawrence College here in Cornwall currently. I am 17 years old and turn 18 on October 12th, which means yes I can vote in the upcoming elections. I have lived in Cornwall my whole life. I am an avid volunteer around Cornwall, I started volunteering at various places from a young age and still do to this day. I am also the future generation, I always hear people saying how young people should be more proactive in the community, yet when we are we are told that

Clearing the air on train whistle petitioner our opinions don’t matter or shouldn’t be considered due to our age, being young doesn’t mean that we aren’t entitled to an opinion and that we shouldn’t be allowed to stand up for what we believe in. I may not pay taxes, but I assure you a great percentage of the people who signed that petition do, and that’s what counts. I started the
petition to have the train whistle kept because safety is something I hold close to me, and as seen through the signatures many others do as well. Thank you to everyone who have continued to support me through this process. Kisa Lanctot, Cornwall
Tax credits are big government Editor: The Harper Conservative are proposing a tax credit for service club memberships. That follows earlier tax credits for volunteer firemen, children’s organized sports, and children’s organized cultural activities. These are all very noble and worthy endeavours. But do they need tax credits? Do tax credits make them more worthy than other types of volunteering, community engagement, pickup ball hockey in the yard, or exploring the forest with your parents? The tax credits do not increase participation in such worthy
endeavours. They merely reward existing behaviour and buy votes among target audiences. The Conservative Party was supposed to be about small government. These tax credits are simple examples of meddling in private lives and big government intrusion in individual values and priorities. How dare Harper tell us where to put our time and out money! Where is the Conservative Party of small government and personal freedom? Tom Manley Berwick ON
Clarification
Linda Meikle, a letter writer from last week, wishes to clarify a position taken with regard to train whistle petitions. She indicates that the petitioner looking to keep the whistles should be disqualified because she is not a taxpayer. Her age has nothing to do with it, indicates Meikle. Seaway News welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be no longer than 300 words and may be edited for clarity or length. Please send your letters by email to editorial@cornwallseawaynews.com or by mail to 501 Campbell Street, Unit 6, Cornwall, Ontario K6H 6X5. Please include your name, address and phone number.

The Ogdensburg airport has received $7.5 million in federal funding for the first phase of a 1,200foot runway extension that will accommodate Allegiant Air passenger jets capable of carrying up to 177 passengers. He would be a good off-the-street, justanother-face-in-the-crowd candidate for a police line-up. Except for the fact he is a candidate in a federal election. Of the four candidates challenging for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry bragging rights, the NDP’s Patrick Burger is the least recognizable name and face in the crowd, even a month into the campaign. He is certainly less known than incumbent Conservative Guy Lauzon, and veteran city councillor Bernadette Clement of Team Trudeau, a popular city councillor and runaway leader in the last two civic elections. And less known than the Green Party’s Elaine Kennedy, a retired high school teacher who is returning to the political arena after a sabbatical Heck, Burger’s campaign manager, Brian Lynch, is better known than his candidate. So what. Four years ago a cluster of Quebec NDP candidates got elected despite the fact few voters in the ridings ever heard of them. One successful candidate had never been to the riding and was vacationing in Florida during the last week of the campaign. See didn’t even live in Quebec. Here in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, the 2011 NDP candidate wasn’t any better known than Burger. But he came close to edging out Liberal candidate Clement for second place. Mario Leclerc and the elected unknowns in Quebec got a huge boost from the magic of Jack Layton and the Orange Wave. Leclerc, now living in Greenfield Park, Que., is bucking the Wave this time around. He has gone Green and is a candidate in Longueuil-Charles-LeMoyne. Tom Mulcair is not Jack Layton, but he hasn’t hurt the NDP brand. If anything, he has enhanced it in this campaign and is in a good position to become the next prime minister. The latest polls call the national race a three-way battle. Not so in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. Super Guy is not about to be swept aside by the Orange Wave. However, the Wave could lift the least recognizable name and face in the local race to a second place finish.
The Liberals may need a big ninth-inning to keep it from happening. ***** He doesn’t have a medical background, but Gerry Paquette, president of the men’s senior section at Cornwall Curling Centre, said he has a remedy for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), better known as the winter blahs. At least if you are 55 or older. The prescription is a membership in the center’s senior division, which is part sport and part social club. The cost is nominal, compared to golf and some other sports. New curlers get a discounted rate for the full season, which runs from October to April. Games are played weekday mornings at 8 and 11 o’clock. Each team plays at least twice a week. And, Paquette pointed out, you are never too old to play the sport. Last year, two active members of the senior division were on the north side of 90. The average age is around 72. “It is a great way to spend the winter,” said Paquette. “It sure makes it go by faster and you meet a lot of great people.” For those who have never curled, there is opportunity to give it a whirl with free lessons from experienced curlers, and ongoing help during the season. The season is sliced into monthly draws, each winding up with a luncheon. Twice a year - Christmas and end of season - a special spread is laid on with prizes. It is all included in the registration fee. A modest entertainment fee supplies unlimited coffee, tea and hot chocolate each morning. The senior division, Paquette said, is more about enjoying yourself and socializing than winning. Registration is being held at the curling centre Sept. 28-Oct. 1, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Registration forms and information are available on the centre’s website, www.cornwallcurling.ca TRIVIA ANSWER Roy Orbison played at the formal opening of the new recreation centre that would become known as the Bob Turner Memorial Centre. Orbison was 25 at the time and on the threshold of becoming one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Scaring up funds for United Way Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Zombie Run at McMaze is far from dead. Close to 40 runners converged at the popular St. Andrews West corn maze, complete with obstacles and a horde of flesheaters, Saturday morning for the United Way of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry fundraiser. Participants wore a belt with four flags (which represented four lives) to protect throughout the race, while zombies pursued their potential lunch and waited impatiently in ambush areas along the five-kilometre course. As Cornwall’s Jen Michaud and her 14-year-old son, Tyler Reasbeck, crept through the long-winding field infested with the soulless corpses, screams echoed in the rows of tall trees surrounding them. “This is my first time being chased by zombies. It’s a lot of fun,” said Michaud. “This is my
seventh run this year and I still have three more. But if it doesn’t help a charity, we don’t do it.” The United Way of SDG supports 17 agencies offering 18 programs throughout SDG. The 2015 fundraising goal is $710,000. “It’s the first event we’ve had since the recent campaign launch - and it continues to grow every year,” said Lori Greer, United Way of SDG executive director. Organizers expect to raise over $2,500. Acting Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale and City Coun. Carilyne Hebert were in attendance at the third annual Zombie Run. Hebert dressed the part, donning a ‘zombie warrior’ costume with a fake machete in hand. The pair of politicians helped constituents through roped obstacles, but when the biters came...the group effort quickly became a solo mission. For more information, visit unitedwaysdg. com.

Stormont County Fair: ‘Summer’s last hurrah’ Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - For 148 years, the Stormont County Fair in Newington has been a Labour Day weekend tradition. Organizers say over 12,000 people visited the fairgrounds from September 4-7 during the four-day event, which focuses on agriculture and farming. “This is where families get together annually for Labour Day weekend, then folks are off to
college, or school – it’s summer’s last hurrah,” said Barbara-Ann Zummach, the fair’s secretary treasurer. “More than 300 volunteers from all over Stormont County rally to make sure it’s a success.” The Stormont County Fair began in a field east of Willard Wereley’s. It then made its way to Osnabruck Centre, until 1867, when the official Stormont Agricultural Society was formed and permanently moved it to Newington. Residue Residue is the term used for any soap scum, dirt, cleaning chemicals, etc., left on a surface after it’s cleanned. Residue is usually the result of failure to rinse or to rinse enough. On hard surfaces it kills the shine, and on fabric or carpet it acts as a sticky magnet to attract dirt and speed up resoiling. Residue also contaminates and affects the bonding of things
owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services
Shar’s Tip of the Week we often want to apply after we clean—wax, floor finish, paint, or soil retardant. Most residue is alkaline, so to remove it, a mile acid rinse such as vinegar is what you need.

Puis, pour une troisième fois, la compagnie présente Love is in the birds (1er avril). GOLF
How to read golf greens for speed and break Short putts and long putts, are played with the same golf club even though the stroke pattern and purpose are quite different. Short putts demand club face control while the long putts demand pace control. The short putting stroke should be as short as possible to lower the risk of changing your club face position after aligning the club face at the target. The long putt stroke can be long and flowing because controlling the pace of the ball speed is your goal. You’ll find when you three putt a green most of the time you left your putt short or you knocked it past the hole, unless there was a significant amount of break that you did not negotiate properly. It is usually the pace or speed of the
ball that is the most difficult to control, especially on super fast greens like Augusta. Today we discuss long putts and how to first determine the speed then the break. Most golfers look at the break first. I first have to make a decision on how fast I’m willing to roll the ball before I decide how much break or curvature the ball will take over the surface it has to cover. The slower I roll the ball the more it will break or curve. I look at the green from 150 yards first to see any tendencies of lean one way or the other. If I threw a bucket of water on that green which way would it flow off? Once reaching the green you need to look at the putt from both sides to gather all the

down? Is there a ridge where the ball will speed up on you and run by the hole? Make a determination while walking around the hole as to how fast you need to roll the ball. Then once behind the putt, meld the information you acquired from looking at the putt from the back and the frontal view you have. Now and make an educated guess at the amount of break you should play for. Remember if you are off on your amount of break by a foot or two it probably won’t cause you to three putt. It’s that putt you leave seven feet short or twelve feet past the hole that will cause you to three putt. Get the pace first, then the line.

information you can about the surface you are about to roll the ball on. I suggest that you drive your golf cart to the back of the green each time, (being that most golfers leave their ball short of the hole on approach) and then walk around the back of the putt first. Try walking a half moon circle around the putt rather than straight to the ball. Look at how the green leans. Understand that the designer of the green had to account for water to flow off the green for drainage purposes. Find the area of drainage and you’ll have the keys to the “lean” of the green. Look at the coloration of the green. Is the color a deep dark green and thick or is it light brown with very thin grass blades? Is it up hill or

Do something nice for someone today. Then don’t say a word about it. Flue season: Don’t forget to cough into your sleeve, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap or hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, stay home! Autumnal to-dos: Get your lawn and garden winter-ready and ensure an easy start next spring. Mow, rake, fertilize and water lawn to ensure that it’s fully nourished through winter. Clean up and compost dead annuals and deadhead perennials. Until the ground freezes, water trees and shrubs to help augment their moisture stores. Wash garden tools, removing rustpromoting dirt. Insulate top and sides of compost bin with leaves or straw and cover bin with a tarp to maintain warmth so that composting continues over winter.
