City council behind new sign rules for restaurants, supermarkets todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – City councillors are fully behind a move to see signs hanging in area restaurants and supermarkets that will alert diners to potentially dangerous conditions inside. Eastern Ontario Health Unit medical officer of health Paul Roumeliotis explained the details of a new sign program that will detail whether or not the particular eatery you’re at has passed inspection, is in the process of meeting standards or is closed due to health issues. The health unit needs municipalities to add teeth to their licensing bylaws with area restaurants to make the hanging of the signs mandatory.

“I think this is wonderful,” said Coun. Elaine MacDonald. “We need to implement this as a bylaw as quickly” as possible. But council voted to refer the matter to administrators for a report before moving forward with what appears to be a rubber-stamp vote to come later. Roumeliotis told a council he wants to start the program before the end of the year. “We do not have the power at this moment…to enforce the signage,” he said. “So we would like the City of Cornwall and the counties to follow suit to modify the bylaw right now that demands a food premise not open without our inspection…to post it in a visible place and have one food handler have training in food-handler courses.”

The new program also covers other operations like supermarkets. “What we’re trying to do right now…is we are going to be sending out information packages to all premises in the area and we want to roll out this program across all our five counties and areas we serve, and in addition we will modify our website,” said Roumeliotis. Roumeliotis said the signage will be colourcoded green (pass), yellow (conditional pass) and red (closed). He had hoped that the province would create an Ontario-wide program for all regions to follow, but instead individual health units will responsible for their own DineSafe-type initiatives.

The health unit currently publishes the results of its restaurant inspections on its website here, but some residents have complained that the information is not immediately available at specific restaurants. The health unit has a mandate to inspect all food premises in its catchment area – more than 1,400 locales. About a dozen public health inspectors inspect premises as a little as once a year, or multiple times. “They are quite engaged in educating more than enforcing in terms of satisfying the requirements for a functioning restaurant,” said Roumeliotis. There are some 43 items on a check list for inspectors.

Stephanie Grady honoured with memorial walk Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The We’re NUT Givin’ Up group is building on the legacy of a beloved Long Sault mother, wife, and teacher. An “Army of Blue” could be seen at the Stephanie Grady Memorial Walk and Family BBQ at the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ingleside, Ont., on Sunday (September 27). “The reason why we’re here is to remember Stephanie and her spirit, and our goal is to give back to others who have helped us so much, “ Nick Grady told the crowd of 150 family members, friends, and residents of the South Stormont community inside the Stephanie Grady Educational Pavilion. The community rallied around Stephanie and Nick, who have three children - Riley, Taylor and Danika, with a massive outpouring of support during the We’re NUT Givin’ Up fundraising campaign in the weeks following her NUT midline carcinoma diagnosis.

The disease progressed too rapidly for her to start treatment, and on May 10, 2014, just four days after when she should have started the trials, Stephanie died peacefully in her home with her family by her side. “I should tell you about another reason why we’re here. In Stephanie’s final days...we discussed the possibility of holding an annual event in her honour,” Nick said. “She thought it was a good idea to help others who have helped us - so thank you so much for coming. Our plan is to make this a yearly event. It’s also very nice to be here again, combining two of Stephanie’s passions, her love of family and nature.” Proceeds from the inaugural walk will go toward Camp Erin, a free three-day bereavement camp for ages six to 17 and the “Getting on Board” project of the St Lawrence Parks Commission and the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. In addition to facilitating this event, Nick has already donated to various regional and local causes.

Giving Hope For Today

CORNWALL, Ontario – MPP Jim McDonell Wednesday slammed the governing of Ontario’s 14 Community Care Access Centres, accusing executives of lining their own pockets at the expense of patient care. “Clients of the Champlain CCAC reported seeing their services reduced or cut altogether since last summer,” McDonell said. Ontario’s auditor-general released a damning report into the management of Ontario’s 14 CCACs, which oversee the delivery of home care and long-term care for thousands of people. The report lays bare concerning trends, such as the fact that CCACs reported profits and overheads as patient care spending, did not perform any economic studies on whether their service delivery model was effective and did not focus on patients’ care outcomes. “Executive salaries, according to the auditorgeneral, have climbed at the same rate as the CCAC’s funding, however the CCAC’s chronic and palliative client load almost doubled,” he said. “These clients need more intense care, but the CCAC can’t fund more care and more executive compensation at the same time – so they chose the latter. This is unacceptable.” According to the report, more than 25 per cent of all CCAC funding was not spent on services to patients. “CCAC’s claims of spending 90 per cent of their funding on patients could only be justified by fuzzy accounting,” McDonell said. “This report strips these figures of the waste, profits and

MPP Jim McDonell. overheads. Twenty-eight percent of CCAC’s funding is not spent on their clients. “Some CCACs gave their CEOs unjustified signing bonuses and annual payouts. In other cases, CCACs did not measure the effectiveness of their service delivery programs thus avoiding internal accountability for their spending.” Not surprisingly, McDonell – a Tory - took a shot at the governing Liberals. “Today’s report is a strong wake-up call for the government. The Community Care Access Centre model needs to be reformed with strong accountability initiatives and objective, measurable standards in place,” he said. “Home care and long-term care are not to be considered just a source of free bonuses and good news stories. Patients’ health and quality of life are at stake – these should be the CCAC’s only priorities.”

IPM attendance could breach 100,000 mark: officials FINCH, Ontario - The number of people who crushed through the main gates at the International Plowing Match in Finch may have reached 100,000 or more. While official numbers had not been released by press time, there was cautious optimism at the plowing match last week. “It would not surprise me one bit,” said IPM chair Jim Brownell, whose army of volunteers have turned the Kagi farm just outside Finch into all things plowing, growing and planting. “The numbers have been incredible.” How incredible? Organizers had to add an extra helicopter to the field for the popular rides that give IPM-goers a bird’s eye view of the action below. The added attraction of things like a combine demolition derby and an auctioneer competition (two firsts for the longtime festival sponsored by the Ontario Plowman’s Association) saw more young people crowding the grandstands at the massive expanse of activity than before. “I have been blown away every day when they come to me with the numbers,” said Brownell. Local MPP Jim McDonell, who has been at the IPM all week, said officials have advised him that the 100,000 mark will be breached. “There’s over 1,000 people in the RV park,” he said. “They will be over 100,000 and that’s

a bit more than the average.” No kidding. Typically an IPM draws about 70,000 people. McDonell said all the exposure for SD and G will pay dividends down the road. “It’s bringing people from all over the province to see our region,” he said. Like Amelia Moore-Crispin and Chloe Maxwell, a pair of teenaged friends from Carleton Place who were taking in the rodeo Friday afternoon. “It’s really cool,” enthused Moore-Crispin. Maxwell said her family visited the IPM a few years ago, and when it was announced that the event would be hosted in eastern Ontario her father Mark decided they would make the trek to Finch. “He grew up on a farm, so he wanted us all to see this,” she said. “It’s great.” Crysler’s Jeremy Landry said his family was blown away by the spectacle. “It’s huge,” he laughed. “It reminds me of a massive farming show.” Perhaps a farming show on steroids would better describe the event for the layman. The IPM is laid out over a huge open expanse of farmland, complete with street signs, its own power grid and a myriad of tents and stages for vendors, performers and displays. The IPM wrapped up Saturday and organizers were expecting another onslaught of visitors, many of whom had to work all week but wanted to see the event before it wrapped up.

His role as a long-term security planner/ advisor means he flies out to remote parts of the country by helicopter – in this case the cavernous Mi-8 helicopter Russia has provided to the mission. “(There are) long days but a chance to see some country from the window of an Mi-8,” he said in an interview. In Haiti democracy is anything but an existential right at this point. Three rounds of elections for everything from national to local representation is scheduled before year’s end, including the presidential run Oct. 25 and municipal/regional balloting Dec. 27. The first round took place in August. “If you had to walk several hours to a polling station, not knowing if someone was going to pull a gun on you, look over your shoulder while you voted or stuff your ballot box with pre-filled returns, would you take the time to vote? They do in Haiti,” said Young. He said there are also cases of armed gangs roaming the area to threaten voters, ballot stuffing and other problems. “It’s a real Third World Country,” said Young. “Although there have been problems, Haitian authorities are getting the job done.” His duties take him to far-reaching areas in Haiti where he and other military/police planners work with local authorities to ensure voters are allowed to cast their ballots without fear of intimidation or violence. “2015 is the first year that Haiti has been

It’s likely his final overseas deployment. Young turns 54 in a matter of days, and at age 55 one is no longer allowed to volunteer for such missions. He said he is missing not only his family and his beloved pet dog, but also the volunteer work he does as a Free Mason, and his fellow troops at the Armoury in Cornwall. “I’m also missing the plowing match,” he said with a laugh. Young returns to Canada in February.

SOUTH GLENGARRY NEWS

Emilie Bonneville is bringing an army with her for another battle with cancer Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

GLEN WALTER, Ontario - Emilie Bonneville is waging another battle with cancer - but this time she is bringing an army. The woman who lives in the Sapphire Hills development in South Glengarry just two years ago waged a successful fight with breast cancer was weeks ago diagnosed with affliction once again. Surgery is planned soon to remove the tumour (followed by chemotherapy treatment), and as part of a send-off her friends have organized a novel way to not only draw awareness to the disease, but offer a way to provide Bonneville with some strength.

Friends Christine Andrews and Mandy Mason corralled more than 700 pumpkins and through the help of a number of volunteers have painted them pink in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The pumpkins, which are also decorated with ribbons, are being sold and proceeds will raise funds for Bonneville’s Run for the Cure team - The Real Boobies of Cornwall. What they thought was going to be a small gesture of solidarity with Bonneville quickly turned into a massive undertaking. “I just love my neighbourhood,” said Bonneville, who lives in the same Sapphire Hills development as Andrews and Mason. “We were always close friends - but now we’re family.

Emilie Bonneville is flanked by Mandy Mason and Christine Andrews amidst a sea of pink pumpkins Sunday night. “This has grown to be bigger than I ever thought it would be.” No kidding. The pumpkins were all painted this weekend, and nearly all of them have been spoken for. “We wanted to have one on each of the front steps for her when she went away for surgery,” said Andrews. “But when I made the Facebook event it just kept going ding, ding, ding. Everyone wanted one.” Several hours of work and dozens of pumpkins later the event has taken on a life of its own. Neighbours who passed Andrews’ home were brought to tears by the display. The pumpkins were left in the driveway to dry, turning the front of the home into a sea of pink. “This is just amazing,” said one woman, wiping her eyes. Pumpkins are $10 each and go on sale Monday. A limited number are left, and Andrews can be reached at christinesteve@sympatico.ca for more details. The little pumpkins were purchased from Harvest Gardens in Cornwall. A trailer from Cornwall Siding has been donated to help transport the mountain of pumpkins and local business Table and Chair is also helping out. The pumpkins are expected to be sold out by Wednesday - just in time for Bonneville to have her pledge money submitted for the annual Run for the Cure.

EDUCATION

The need for training never stops employment will decrease and that will pose a challenge for employers. That is one of the reasons immigration is getting so much attention these days. It’s no longer a matter of immigrants taking away the jobs of existing employees; it’s more a matter of them filling vacancies that we cannot fill on our own. And that need will continue to grow. The alternative is that if enough employees cannot be found, the jobs move elsewhere. The contradiction, of course, is that Cornwall currently has an unemployment problem. It seems there are not enough jobs available to keep the available workforce fully employed. Yet a look through various job listings indicates that there are easily a few hundred or more jobs in the area currently vacant that employers are anxious to fill. So, there are jobs available, but many of those who are looking for work lack the requisite experience, education or skills. Or they are dealing with disabilities, police records or other impediments that put limits on their employability. This is where the Eastern Ontario Training Board and many other employment and training partners come in. Every year a lot of government money comes into the community through various programs geared to enabling more people to join the active workforce. Of course, it means taxpayers are subsidizing that. But a fully active workforce reduces social problems within the community and that benefits all of us. Continuous advances in technology are driving the need for continuous upgrading of job skills across the board to meet the needs of employers and their products. Current trends indicate that most employees will change careers or require major upgrades to their job skills every five years. It’s somewhat like the 24-hour news cycle. The need for training just never stops.

Ed Allard In my last article, I noted the demographics in play in Akwesasne where more people will be retiring from the workforce in the next 10 years than the incoming youth population can replace. Census data for the Cornwall area suggests a similar demographic. There are roughly 14,000 people in the age group 50-65 who will be leaving the workforce and some 10,000 in the age group 10-25 who will be entering it in some fashion over the next 10 years. This is part of the aging trend that is occurring all across Canada as the baby boom generation reaches retirement age. We’ll see more people leaving the workforce than entering it. Current trends indicate that more people are continuing to work past age 65 but a number still retire prior to 65. Also, there are a number of people of workforce age who are not in the active workforce, such as stay-at-home moms, people with disabilities and so forth. On the other hand, some of today’s youth will aspire to careers that take them away from the local area, as they always have. Then again, continued technological advances mean that the need for certain jobs and the nature of those jobs will continue to evolve. So, the numbers do not always add up easily. The mills that were the backbone of the local economy remain only as skeletons of Cornwall’s past. Manufacturing work still exists but in smaller operations. Distribution centres and call centres are the economic drivers of the moment. Machines and computers have taken over many jobs that employed humans just 10-15 years ago. So, the nature of available work has already undergone significant change, which will continue in some form or other. But regardless of how those factors affect the actual numbers, over next 10 years and beyond the size of the local workforce available for

OPINION

Frost’s European vacation is more about optics than substance Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

this year, weeks after being sworn in as a city councillor. Those are the lowlights, but you can see that Frost has storm clouds following him early in this term. So when O’Shaughnessy got up at the city council meeting Monday to suggest Frost was dealing with health issues, only later for us to find out the good councillor was crowing about a much-needed European vacation days earlier…well, it just doesn’t look good – and that’s the problem with this latest chapter in the Brock Frost diatribe. Frost can go on medical leave for as long as he wants – I wish him well. But perhaps it would have been a better idea to keep the Ukrainian jaunt on the down low. At the very least O’Shaughnessy probably should have avoided making such a public display Monday night. O’Shaughnessy wished Frost a “speedy recovery” Monday night...words usually reserved for something on the serious side, like a medical affliction that could threaten

one’s life. O’Shaughnessy, I’m told, knew about the Facebook posts and made his announcement anyway – another PR mistake. To find out that Frost has booked weeks of gallivanting in Europe and is asking friends to join him for drinks on the shores of the Danube River…well, it makes O’Shaughnessy’s announcement and well wishes look foolish, despite the fact that they are undoubtedly heartfelt. It’s the optics of this whole thing that’s troublesome…not the substance. Councillors, following Monday’s meeting were laughing - literally laughing - at one of their own. It makes for good copy and some smart aleck comments by a newspaper hack – but does little for the image of a city council that needs more good stories than bad this early in its mandate. I hope Frost enjoys his vacation and recharges his batteries in time for a successful return to municipal politics, but I’m not betting on one of those ‘Wish You Were Here’ postcards from the Estonian border.

Councillors need to pull in the same direction Ed Allard

12 - Thursday, October 1, 2015 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

“Train wreck: (noun) A total (expletive) disaster…the kind that just makes you shake your head.” That definition, courtesy of our friends at urbandictionary.com, pretty much sums up the political career of Coun. Brock Frost, in a nutshell. Frost, the new Clark W. Griswold of local politics, is readying for a vacation, touring the wilds of Eastern Europe with stops in all the hot spots including Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia and (my personal favourite) Ukraine – where they just happen to be rehearsing for World War III. Why is this news, you might ask? Typically it’s not…but Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy made a small splash Monday night when, without being prompted, he explained to all of us in attendance (and those watching on TV) that the embattled councillor is on leave from council business until Oct. 27. “Health issues” was the reason given, and it was said a doctor suggested the councillor who nearly quit his post this summer needs a break. Fair enough…stress can be a terrible thing. But, if I’m angling for a stress-releasing vacation I usually book something on a beach, or a ship, where I can unwind. The potential for dodging artillery in Ukraine doesn’t make my personal list but, hey, to each his own. Days before the mayor’s announcement Frost let everyone know via Facebook that he had, apparently, booked a European

vacation. “There’s an old English proverb that says ‘When you’re physically and mentally exhausted from stress, stop everything you’re doing immediately and book a spontaneous flight to Estonia, rent a car, and then drive through Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and into Ukraine,’” Frost said in a Facebook status update attributed to an account bearing his name dated Sept. 24. “I leave in nine days.” A few days later he added stops in Russia and Finland and invited friends to join him for a drink. Is any of this an outright assault upon the voters of Cornwall? Absolutely not…unless you’re ranking the work of the Brock Frost PR machine to date, which scores somewhere between “nul” and “nichego” (that’s Russian, folks…for “zero” and “nothing”). Because of this and so many other things it’s painfully clear Frost needs a lesson in how a politician grapples with the kind of stigma we’ve attached to him. His track record to date includes a short-lived ownership of the Cornwall River Kings that blew up in his face, with many people suggesting it was a publicity stunt to get elected (note: I don’t buy it, but some do). His time in office has included news that he is facing criminal charges in Quebec, followed by a resignation in June that milliseconds later was rescinded, and a Cogeco TV interview that he convened to avoid being misquoted by print media – where he promptly misquoted himself and misspoke to the point of suggesting he would plead guilty to those same police charges. Oh yah…he also moved to Ottawa earlier

just about everything the city is involved in. You can see the results on the city website under the City Government tab. I counted some 48 different “priorities.” The word strategy was used a lot but there was no “plan” for how and when to implement the various items, if they could be implemented at all. No costs were attached to the items, so we don’t know if they were even affordable, let alone achievable. There were no timelines developed, no measurable steps toward completion and no clear idea of what the end results would look like. Some of the items were so broad they could be used to justify just about anything. Getting a university in town comes under “greater access to postsecondary education”, but the college provides postsecondary education too, so it could easily be read to mean subsidizing college operations as well… or maybe a daily helicopter link from Cornwall direct to Carleton U or Queens… Don’t get me wrong, it was a brilliant academic exercise and the previous group certainly wonderfully fleshed out the structure that the facilitators gave them. And everything

fitted into a nice chart that managed to go on a single sheet of paper. Gold stars all around! But it was all process. The session was time limited so there was no real opportunity for indepth discussion. What this council needs to do, though, is some serious strategic thinking rather than just following a process. They need to come to agreement on a few, I’m guessing four or five specific items at most, that they want to accomplish above all else that would benefit the city over the long term. They should agree on what the end product will look like and should establish some measurable steps towards completion. Each of the items will also have to be costed by the staff and then councillors must ensure those funds are provided for in upcoming budgets consistent with the timelines. That’s asking a lot given that the current group are not on the same page on so many things, but that is the challenge and it would serve taxpayers much better than what exists now. And that’s the way I see it.

ture of penicillin. TRIVIA Lucien Lamoureux defeated this city-born lawyer, the incumbent MP, to take back Stormont for the Liberals in a 1962 federal election. HERE AND THERE U.S. newspapers and television networks gave wall-to-wall coverage to the Pope’s visit last week but most Americans were not interested. A poll showed just 32% of Americans followed the coverage. Rhode Island showed the most interest with 56%, followed by New Jersey (49%) and New York (46%). No surprise that the weakest results were in Utah and the Bible Belt. Only 14% of Utah residents showed an interest in the papal visit. Southern States at the bottom of the list were Georgia (27%), North Carolina (28%), Mississippi (23%), Alabama (22%). And 83% of Americans said the coverage was excessive. ... Hillary Clinton claimed that when the family left the White House in 2001 it was broke. If so, the Clintons have made a remarkable financial recovery. Bill’s financial net worth in 2014 was pegged at $55 million, and counting. But that’s chump change when stacked against other former presidents. Lyndon Johnson had an estate worth $98M. The wealthiest was John Kennedy. He was worth $1 billion at the time of his death. At the bottom of the list is Harry “Give ‘Em Hell”Truman. He was worth a measly $1M. THIS AND THAT On the way home from the International Plowing Match Saturday, I realized that I had spent seven hours at the site, walked the grounds from one end to the other, absorbed all the wonderful sights and sounds of a country

fair on steroids, and never saw any plowing. ... Friend said a pollster called the other day to ask him how he was going to vote. He said sure, “By secret ballot.” ... A Toronto-area man was charged Sunday with a dozen impaired driving charges after his vehicle slammed into a car, killing three children. And his lawyer tells the media that his client “is struggling” and that this is a “very tough time for him.” Tough time for him! How about some compassion for that family dealing with three dead children his client is accused of killing? Welcome to the justice system where the concern quickly switches from victims to the rights of the accused. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR This from fellow scribbler Nick Wolochatiuk who noted that in our Sept. 17 column we wrote, “The new Grade 4 teacher who two years before was in high school…Class sizes and teach-student ratios were not an issue. Thirty kids in a class and another showed up, just add another desk…” “Ha! That’s nothing,” said Nick.” In September 1959, at age 19, I was in charge of a class of 40 boys, 30 Grade 7s and 10 Grade 6s. Annual salary: $21,000. Only two months before I was in high school. Can anyone beat that?” ... A reader recalls going to a one-room country school in the 1940s with one teacher for all grades. “In the winter, the school was heated with a wood-burning stove at the back. And we walked a mile to and from school, after doing the morning chores. Sometimes, our father would hook up the hay wagon (or sleigh in the winter) to the tractor and drive us (four kids) to school.” ... The farm house, summer kitchen, cook stove and wood shed.

The red brick barn on the Kelly family farm on the East Front that became the site for the first Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge. ... The Highway 2 cabins beside Blackadder’s Creek in old Cornwall Township and the cabins just west of Grey’s Creek. ... The Killarney Inn on Second Street, just west of Cumberland Street, operated by the Burke family. Several motel units were later built behind the inn. ... When there were more bicycles in the bicycle racks at Howard Smith Paper Mill and Courtaulds than cars in the parking lots. ... Folks walked to work or took the bus in the winter because it was easier than trying to start the family chariot. ... Cars that had hand cranks for cold winter starts. ... Before selfies, we called it taking a picture of ourselves, which shows that sometimes the more things change the more they stay the same. ... Reader recalls as a kid in the 1950s using a wooden clothes pin to attach a piece of cardboard, or a hockey card, to the spokes of his bicycle to make a motor type sound. The faster you went, the louder the sound. ... Bamboo fishing poles. SPORTS STUFF Just in case you were wondering, David Price is not the highest paid Blue Jay. Mark Buehrie and Troy Tulowitzki lead this season’s team pay parade with $20M each. Price not far behind at $19.8 but he is in for a huge pay raise. Blue Jay bargains are Marcus Stroman ($514,700), Roberto Osuna ($507,500) and Kevin Pillar ($512,000). MVP candidate Josh Donaldson might be considered a bargain, but his $4.3M salary isn’t exactly chump change. The Blue Jays are No. 13 on the Major League payroll ladder - $115,901,600M.

At age 50, when most civil servants are checking their pension plan statements and starting to tick off the days to freedom 55, Guy Lauzon was thinking about a new career. “I always wanted to be a firefighter,” said the incumbent MP, who at the time was employed as a Manpower manager. So, when the St. Andrews native learned that Cornwall Fire Service was accepting applications to fill a couple of approaching vacancies, he applied. At the time he might have been the oldest person to apply for a firefighter’s position with the department. Lauzon, whose son Jeff is a member of the department, took the written and demanding physical tests. Passed them with flying colours. He finished in the top 10, outperforming many of much younger applicants in the physical test. He went home and waited for a call for an interview. The call never came. “Guess the chief thought I was too old,” said Lauzon who at age 71 keeps himself in great physical condition. “You know what, I could still pass the (physical) test,” he said. TRIVIA ANSWER Mustard gas was produced and stored at Stormont Chemicals.

back pain and injury. Low back pain is the most common complaint among golfers. It’s no won der since the golf swing is such a torquing movement that directly affects the lower back if you have weak and restricted muscles.

The benefits far outweigh the effort involved. Longer drives, no more injuries and years of golf enjoyment. There’s no better return than that. So take a different approach to improve golf driving distance.

to build up the golf specific muscles that can make this happen. To improve golf driving distance you must take this attitude. If not, be ready to accept the same swing, game and results you’ve been get ting for a long time. I don’t mean to mix words, but the truth is needed. No sugar-coating! This is “throwing all the cards on the table” and deciding how bad you want to improve your golf driving distance. Golfers have been bombarded with ads about the latest-greatest driver, guaranteed to add 30 yards to your driving distance. I say bs on that. It’s you that swings that club. Doesn’t mat ter what club you have if your body is in poor condition. The critical area to work on for the quickest results is your core (mid-section). Your core is the engine that drives the swing and produces all the power. You’ve got to strengthen this area from a rotational standpoint to improve golf driving distance. Not only will this approach improve your golf driving distance, but it will eliminate low

How do I improve my golf driving distance? I hear this question daily. This is the dream of almost every amateur golfer. To hit it longer. But to improve golf driving distance isn’t what you think. No it’s not your equipment. It’s not pounding more balls at the range. And it’s not even taking more lessons. It’s about working on the machine that swings the club. Are you following me? Do you know what I’m getting at? You’re an athlete if you play golf. Don’t laugh. I’m serious! To swing a golf club effectively takes a tremendous amount of golf specific strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and stability. None of the above can be accomplished without an optimum level of golf specific fit ness. When was the last time you made a swing and felt like it was an effortless, full and pro duced maximum power? I’m sure it’s happened on occasion, but not as often as you want right? The reason why is your body can’t produce a repetitively powerful swing. It’s not capable of it. Why? Because you need to work on it ‘off the course’ with simple golf strength and stretches

Hitting the silk – but just for fun Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com

seconds the pair free-falled down to 5,000 feet. “It was marvelous, the view was amazing, but there certainly was a pucker factor about the whole thing. On the GoPro audio, the wind noise sort of muffles my ‘Holy sufferin’, snappin’….!!’ (Anyone from North Rustico, PEI knows the rest of the saying that jumped out of my mouth.)” “Then the big chute snapped open. We were then able to carry on a conversation. It was gorgeous up there. It was a risk, but a calculated risk.” Five minutes and 14 seconds after leaving the aircraft, Judi and Deschenes were safely on the ground. Since she had followed his meticulous instructions, it was the jump master’s feet who took the brunt of the impact. Mark Bourdon, operator of Alexandria Skydive, was right there to greet them. It is notable that the

proceeds of their opening day went to breast cancer research. “That’s it! It was great, so absolutely memorable. I decided a long time ago that I would not go to my grave with an unfulfilled bucket list and the thought “I wish I had......” Good health is precious and life is not infinite. Plan for tomorrow but live for today. Next on my list is to be behind the wheel of a race car zooming around a track. Of course, there will have to be a professional driver sitting beside me – just in case.” NOTE: On that same day, on another flight, I also made my first jump, but leaving a plane at 10,300 feet was never on my ‘Bucket List’. A generous friend, John Kivenko, had financed my jump. Who could refuse a gift from a friend! However, I had to wonder about his motives...

When a wing breaks off, or when the cockpit is belching fire, or when a heat-seeking missile is racing toward your aircraft, it’s time to escape by ‘hitting the silk’ and joining the club. “What club?” you ask. It’s called “The Caterpillar Club” established in 1922 by Canadian Leslie Irvin, a parachute manufacturer. To become a member, your life must have been saved by using a parachute to escape from a disabled aircraft. Anyone, military or sport jumper, who went up intending to exit from a perfectly good aircraft is not eligible for membership. Therefore, Judi Mooney of Cornwall, who jumped

from a perfectly good Cessna 182 from an altitude of 10,300 feet, doesn’t qualify. Her jump was on her ‘Bucket List’ and a birthday gift. Thanks to the GoPro camera strapped to her jump suit, she has been able to re-live the audio and visual aspects of her recent return to earth. During my interview with her, we replayed the dramatic footage. “It felt like an eternity for the aircraft to climb up to 10,300 feet. I was afraid I was going to accidentally fall out of the doorless aircraft. However, I had complete confidence in my tandem master, Jean Deschenes. After all, he had already made over 4,000 successful jumps. He coached me as if I was on a delivery table.” During a tandem jump, a stabilizing drogue chute is deployed almost instantly. Why is the pedestrian countdown at the corner of Seventh and Cumberland streets so messed up? It starts at 99 or something, then jumps down to the 40s, and finally ends up at something like six or seven before counting to zero. Wonder what would happen if someone gets hit there...is the city on the hook in some way?

It’s time to start thinking about car care for the winter season coming up. Check your car manual and switch to the lowest recommended winter oil grade for your model. Synthetic motor oil (though more expensive) can be used year round and resists cold-temperature sludge.

A Cornwall woman has a big thank you to the trio of people who found her lost purse at the IPM and turned it in to be found.

After selling tickets throughout the summer across SDG, the United Way/ Centraide ATV/Trailer Raffle has a winner. Bernie Carriere was the winner, having his name drawn by David Murphy, shown above. This inaugural draw contributed just over $19,000 to the United Way/Centraide SD&G 2015 Community Campaign. “This was a new endeavor for us this year”, said Lori Greer, United Way/Centraide Executive Director. “We started selling tickets in June, participated at various events and fairs throughout SDG, the last one being the International Plowing Match in Finch.”

Pet Tip of the Week: People food is dangerous for your pet. Rich foods can upset their delicate stomachs and poultry bones can splinter and cause serious illness. The best thing to feed your pet is a specially formulated cat or dog food. Your veterinarian can help you select the one best suited for your companion animal. So this Thanksgiving, make sure to keep the turkey and trimmings out of Fido’s reach.

FALL CLEANING ~ Mulching and composting are great ways to get rid of your leaves this fall. Mulch leaves with a lawn mower to reduce the bulk of the pile, then add the mulch in small amounts to your compost. It will break down along with your kitchen scraps to make an eco-friendly fertilizer. What a beautiful September we had this year ... let’s hope it continues through October! You can take the councillor out of city hall, but not the other way around...or something like that. Bernadette Clement is keeping a close eye on municipal business while stumping for the Liberals in the Oct. 19 election.
