River levels west of Cornwall leave some boats stranded to pulling the plug on a bath tub, or replacing one. “It’s really going to affect the water immediately near the plug,” he said. The board has been receiving a number of queries, and complaints, from boat and home owners west of Cornwall. One person, via social media, suggested it had been 30 years since water levels dropped this much, but the board said that is not the case. “Lake St. Lawrence was last this low in 1998,” the board said on its Facebook page, though it did concede levels have dropped drastically. “I drove the north shore on Saturday while the level was at its lowest mid-afternoon. You could see stone fences from the Lost Villages and other such features that very rarely surface. It was quite surreal.” Another woman complained: “I’d love to get some water under my boat so that I could possibly start it and pull it out! It is currently sitting completely surrounded by mud where threeplus feet of water used to be.” The board plans to increase the level of the river, perhaps as early as this weekend, so that recreational boaters can get their vessels

removed from the water. “The board continues to target this weekend (Oct. 10-11) for a subsequent flow decrease to temporarily raise levels and aid in boat haul-out on Lake St. Lawrence, please continue to plan for this and we will update with more information in the coming days,” said a Facebook submission Monday morning. Bruxer said by decreasing the flow at the power dam levels immediately west should see an increase - fairly quickly in some cases.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Water levels on the St. Lawrence River west of Cornwall are so low that boats are becoming stuck on the bottom, or in their lifts. John Mason, who lives on Island 17 near Long Sault, said his sailboat’s keel is stuck on the bottom and if the water levels on the river don’t increase, even slightly, there could be real problems. “I’m not alone here,” he said. “Ault Island is like that. The (Long Sault) marina is like that. “My jet-ski is high and dry...and the sailboat’s stuck in the mud.”
Mason said, according to his measurements, the level of the river near his home has dropped some 70 inches from a high-water mark earlier this year - nearly six feet. Mason added he hasn’t seen a drop this bad in more than 30 years. Things look bleak along the shoreline of the river west of Cornwall. Where there was once ample water is now a rocky landscape. Docks that were once surrounded by water are dry as a bone. The level of the St. Lawrence River often drops in the late summer and fall. This fall the water level has dropped more than usual because of a wet summer on Lake Ontario. Those levels are controlled by adjusting the outflow of water at the R.H. Saunders power dam in Cornwall. With high levels on Lake Ontario more water is released at the dam in Cornwall - resulting in low levels immediately west of the power plant. Jennifer Gardiner, a spokesperson for Ontario Power Generation, said her agency receives direction from the St. Lawrence Board of Control concerning water levels on the river. Board spokesperson Jacob Bruxer likened it

Smell from sewage treatment plant has neighbours holding their noses CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s newest piece of infrastructure even has that new waste water treatment plant smell - and neighbours aren’t pleased. Peter McArthur and a number of other residents in the Sunrise Acres neighbourhood in the east of Cornwall have smelled the stink of the plant for weeks – in some cases months. McArthur walks his dog in the area immediately north of the plant and often smells the pungent odour of sewage…but things got worse recently when more neighbours began to smell the stench from their own properties. “You can smell it, definitely,” said McArthur, who describes the stench as something akin to a wet or dying animal. “And when we walked by earlier this month you could smell it in the neighbourhood.” McArthur was told by some neighbours there is a concern about property values now that the
plant appears to be up and running at full capacity. The city concedes there has been a smell factor in recent weeks. “We have received complaints,” said John St. Marseille, Cornwall’s manager of infrastructure, who added part of the problem can be attributed to the growing pains of a new piece of municipal hardware: the treatment plant is not yet a year old. “As we’re doing the rollout of the new plant… we add different (compounds) as we work on the settling of solids and other wastes.” One of the new compounds comes with a pretty significant side-effect. “It smells,” said St. Marseille. “I’ve gone into the area, and I can smell it.” He added crews at the waste water treatment plant are likely to stay away from using that particular compound in the future. But St. Marseille did say the city plans to continue to calibrate the plant in the weeks ahead to optimize efficiency.

TOUCHDOWN! Iconic bridge arch is finally on the ground CORNWALL, Ontario - Painstaking work to get the iconic arch of the Seaway International Bridge lowered to the ground finally ended at about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 30. Cheers went up from those watching the spectacle and the iron workers who completed the work laughed and shook hands when the massive piece of steel finally touched down on support pads on the ground. The apparatus used to lower the arch was operating at about 15 feet an hour,
making the event an all-day affair. “It was quite a sight to see,” said Robert Lefebvre, who witnessed the touchdown. Witnesses believed the work to lower the arch to the ground had been halted when a cable snapped, but iron workers told Seaway News that more than 100 cables are supporting the bridge on its journey to the ground and the process has continued unabated.
Lights were set up at the site to allow for work after sunset. Bob Earle has lived in the bridge’s shadow for 77 years, just a few hundred metres away on Pine Lane, where he grew up and still lives with his wife, Myrna. “I watched them build it, and now I’m watching them tear it down,” said Earle. “I never liked it. I’m overjoyed to see it come down, because it was dirty and noisey. No love lost here.”
The cente span will now be cut up. The $15-million demolition project is being overseen by Morrison Hershfield. The engineering company’s contract administrator Robert Goulet told Seaway News construction crew members will be lowering the centre span at 18-feet an hour, and there is roughly 110-feet from the suspended piece to the ground. For more photos check out cornwallseawaynews.com.
Bridge bolts being sold to raise money for chemo equipment CORNWALL, Ontario - Barry Cox, owner of the Trophy Shop, and his friend Brian Leitner, owner of BAM Laserworks, have teamed up and created a unique keepsake out of bolts taken off the Seaway International Bridge. The two have used their trades to design and craft the bolts in a Plexiglas case with an engraved plaque with an image of Cornwall’s iconic landmark. There are a limited number available, with each piece having its own serial number. These are a labour of love, each made personally by Barry and Brian themselves with materials provided at cost by Cornwall Glass. Demo Plus has also given the pair access to the scrap piles to pick out the bolts being used. Each bolt is being sold for $150 and the proceeds will be donated to Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation. The funds raised will support the purchase of equipment for the new chemotherapy area. Cox and Leitner are also working on a less expensive piece of memorabilia using the bridge washers. They are aiming to sell these for around $25 so that everyone can have a piece of Cornwall’s history.
When Cox and Leitner first heard that chemotherapy was coming to Cornwall Community Hospital, they immediately wanted to help. Cox lost both his brother- and sister-in-law to cancer at young ages, and Leitner knows first-hand the difficulty associated with driving a family member to Ottawa for treatment. “I drove my mom back and forth to Ottawa for her appointments, and it was awful. While I took her to Ottawa, another family member stayed back to care for my father who was also ill. Time off work, the cost of gas and parking – the logistics are such a challenge,” said Leitner. Both agree that having chemotherapy right here at home will make a huge difference in the lives of many families in our community. “We’ve all lost someone we care about to cancer,” added Cox. The limited edition bolts are available at the Trophy Shop or by calling 613-938-6444. You can also visit bamlaserworks.com or cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca for more information. To date, CCH Foundation has raised approximately $300,000 of the $400,000 required to purchase equipment for the chemotherapy area.
Brian Leitner and Barry Cox proudly display the bridge bolts they are selling to raise funds for the new chemotherapy area at Cornwall Community Hospital.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Canada’s national pastime hits the pavement for the United Way of SDG at Boston Pizza Cornwall on Saturday, October 17. The local charitable organization has teamed up with the popular eatery (located at 1234 Brookdale Avenue) to serve up a fresh event with Cornwall Colts for referees and fun giveaways. “The winning team gets treated to a pizza party,” said UW program and event coordinator Sherry Davis. The 5-on-5 ball hockey tournament runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Boston Pizza Cornwall parking lot. It costs $100 per team. The rules are simple, two women must be in play at all times, and participants must be 18 years and older. Each team will play three 30-minute games. To ensure everyone has an opportunity to score big for Cornwall area charities, individual registrants are invited to join in for a $20
donation. The generous athletes will be paired with various teams. Cornwall Community Police Service Special Const. Melanie Chartrand signed up to help the community, earn bragging rights, and the piles of pizza up for grabs. “We challenge EMS (to register a team) for sure,” said Chartrand. United Way of SDG executive director Lori Greer told Seaway News the 2015-2016 campaign has raised 15 per cent (roughly $106,500) of the $710,000 goal. The City of Cornwall and the United Counties declared October ‘United Way Month’ at separate flag raisings on Thursday (October 1). Greer says both municipalities donate annually to the campaign through payroll deduction options offered through their workplaces. UW supports 17 member agencies offering 18 programs throughout Cornwall and the United Counties. For more information, visit the Facebook event page here or call United Way of SDG program and event coordinator Sherry Davis at 613-932-2051.

Pop goes the silence: Cornwall won’t stay quiet about child abuse Adam Brazeau
Society of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry launched its Child Abuse Prevention campaign adam.brazeau@tc.tc at Lamoureux Park in Cornwall. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Children’s Aid On Saturday (October 3), over 975 people,
compared to 801 in 2014, popped a brown paper bag in their hands to highlight how calls from the community play a vital role in preventing child abuse. Organizers say 1,500 enjoyed free BBQ, activities, and entertainment throughout the event. “We had an amazing turnout given how cold it was,” said organizer Kimly Thivierge, CAS of SD&G public relations officer. “This initiative keeps growing every year, and more people
keep coming out to show support.” Dozens in attendance donned ‘Break the Silence’T-shirts. The powerful fashion statement is still available for $10 throughout October, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month, at Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer in Cornwall. Each year, about 171,000 Ontarians report their concerns about the safety and well-being of a child, according to the Ontario Association of Children’s Aid Societies (OACAS).

Cornwall author’s debut explores ‘The Unknown Truth’ adam.brazeau@tc.tc
Adam Brazeau
CORNWALL, Ontario - This eerie paranormal mystery novel aimed at young adults is fiction, but first-time author Annette Labelle still believes the stories they’re based on are hauntingly real. “Do you believe in ghosts? I believe,” said the 36-year-old mother of three. Labelle’s debut offering, ‘The Unknown Truth’ is published under United Kingdombased Copyhouse Press and goes on release Thursday (October 1) in paperback and ebook edition for $20.95. “I never thought about writing,” she joked. Labelle started chronicling her own experiences with paranormal activity on her iPhone and iPad, while her children would sleep at night. When she depleted her stock of spooky stories the novel fell by the wayside for many months until she started collected them from friends and family. The 250-page book was created over a three-year period. “I just wanted to get it out,” said Labelle. The novel’s protagonist, 16-year-old Tina, moves into a new home with her family only to realize they’re not alone. After some unexplainable events occur she turns to a medium to solve her haunted house problem. “It’s geared toward teenagers,” she said. “I didn’t make it too scary, because I want my kids to read it. But I didn’t make it too lame, either, because I want my kids to read it.” Follow this link to purchase Annette Labelle’s The Unknown Truth: https://www.chapters. indigo.ca/en-ca/books/the-unknowntruth/9780993394027-item.html.

New logos, paint job for Cornwall’s water-filled monolith Todd Lihou
includes a spiffy new paintjob, and updated logos for the exterior. “Right now there are two logos on the outside, but when it’s done there will be three,” said Owen O’Keefe of the city’s infrastructure department. The tank was drained of its capacity in the middle of September in preparation for repair work within the tank, not to mention the exterior improvements. By the middle of November it is anticipated the tank will be back online, said O’Keefe. In the meantime Cornwall residents are getting their water directly from the water

CORNWALL, Ontario – What is 150-feet tall, weighs well more than you can imagine and is in need of a facelift? It’s the Cornwall water tower – and the facelift has already begun. The monolithic tower that stands post near Highway 401 off of Tollgate Road has been completely drained of the one million gallons of water it can hold and is being refurbished at a cost of about $500,000. The work includes safety upgrades inside the structure to ladders and kick plates, but the big change that the public will see

Municipal officials scheduled the work for the autumn to avoid taxing the municipal system in the dog days of summer. Cornwall collects its water from the St. Lawrence River, upstream of the R.H. Saunders Generating Station. Owen O’Keefe stands alongside the Cornwall water tower which is undergoing a facelift.

CORNWALL, Ontario - An online petition is circulating to collect names of those opposed to having fluoride reintroduced into the Cornwall water supply. Jason Pichie, the architect of the petition, said in an interview he’s not necessarily opposed
“To put it back there would be some substantial costs,” said city infrastructure manager John St. Marseille in a previous interview. “There is still an outstanding report to bring back to council...to allow for some public discourse on how to proceed.” Critics have argued the risks of using chemicals to treat the water present too many worries for workers, while also creating a danger for those who consume it. So-called “hydrofluorosilicic acid” is used to create fluoride in the water, and municipal officials, in past city reports, consider it dangerous. - With Seaway News files.
on the subject Oct. 13 when administrators outline the ramifications of re-introducing the fluoridation process to our water - or keeping the additive out. Two years ago the fluoridation of our water was discontinued after technical problems at the treatment plant occurred, followed by health and safety concerns. While medical professionals have long suggested the benefits of water fluoridation, especially in terms of dental care, the decision for councillors could boil down to money. It is expected to cost as much as $300,000 to upgrade the water treatment plant, as well as an extra $50,000 a year in operational expenses.

JIM REID: Big or small, he grows ‘em all but mostly the big ones Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Officially Jim Reid is an employee of the Ministry of Finance, working with the integrated border enforcement task force, helping to monitor the region in Cornwall for contraband. Unofficially, Reid grows pumpkins, tomatoes, turnips and cabbage…big ones. The latest pumpkin to leave his garden near Martintown tipped the scales at 1,000 pounds exactly. But its big brother, a whopper at more than 1,200 pounds, is scheduled to go to competition in October where Reid hopes to add to his trophy haul as a so-called giant vegetable
grower. In his first year as a competitive grower, just four years ago, Reid won the Wellington Pumpkinfest with an 1,148-pound gargantuan. The competition can be tough - he bested the second-place finisher by just 15 pounds. “I’ve always had a garden,” he said. Reid attended agricultural college in Kemptville as a younger person and said tilling the earth has always been a passion. “When we built this house in 1981 I had a garden in before the house was finished.” His menagerie of produce includes huge cabbages, tomatoes and turnips to name a few…all of which are destined for one
Jim Reid, with a 1,200-pound monster pumpkin.

competition or another. There’s even an 18-foot sunflower keeping a watchful eye over the property. It was an inauspicious start to his hobby. “The first pumpkin I grew only got to 200 pounds,” he said with a laugh. “I visited a relative in PEI and he gave me a few seeds for a pumpkin.” But since the first attempt Reid has put time and resources into carefully adding just the right amount of carbon, manure and other compounds to his garden, while keeping a watchful eye on the rain forecast, to make sure his harvest comes out the way he likes it. It’s a labour of love…and time. A couple of hours a day, every day is spent in the garden on top of his regular work. “On the weekends I can spend all day out here,” he said laughing. Reid also grows different varieties of regularsized pumpkins, which dot the landscape at his home.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A suspected smalltime drug operation near a Cornwall high school has been shut down after a police raid on Monroe Avenue. The Cornwall Street Crime Unit with the assistance of the Emergency Response Team executed a drug warrant at about 7:35 p.m. on Tuesday (September 29). Cornwall Community Police Service Const. Daniel Cloutier told Seaway News distraction devices were used, causing a loud explosion sound, as officers surrounded the small deadend street off Sydney Street. According to police, officers seized a quantity of cocaine, marijuana, and Canadian and U.S. currency. Vincent Bryan was arrested at the scene. The 62-year-old suspect was taken into custody and charged with possession of cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession of marijuana, and property obtained by crime. The man was released to appear in a Cornwall court on November 10. While the drug raid unfolded, the nearby Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School (CCVS) was placed under a ‘hold and secure’ for safety reasons.

OPINION
Some reasons to be thankful heading into the long weekend Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
This space has been filled with too much complaining as of late…which is mostly my fault. It’s what I do. But as we head into Thanksgiving, typically a time to remember all the good things we have in our lives, I offer the following as a testament to how fortunate life can/should be when you take time to smell the roses. UNITED WAY 2015 The campaign has begun and the money, even if only a trickle, has started to flow as $106,000 has been collected. Every year, usually around this time, we pen an editorial urging the community to support the charity that funds more than a dozen member agencies like Big Brothers, March of Dimes and Beyond 21 to name a few. The difference this year is the United Way has doubled down and is looking for even more money after a campaign a year ago that had to be extended and ultimately finished just short of its goal. Last year it was $707,070, while in 2015 United Way supporters are being asked to contribute towards a $710,000 goal. The phrase ‘go big, or go home’ comes to mind. I say good. There’s nothing wrong with aiming high when it comes to raising money for good community work and that’s exactly what
the United Way and its agencies do. Here’s hoping that by Christmas United Way’s stocking is overflowing with cash. MAX KEEPING I met Max, the venerable CJOH News anchor, a few times. I always got the impression that he remembered me, but it was just his way of making someone feel comfortable during a conversation. The last time we spoke was at the business excellence awards a few years ago and Max and my wife had a long conversation about the dress she was wearing…which typically happens when Kim walks into a room. Max, as you no doubt know, passed away last week. As we said in our report on his passing, if you watched the six o’clock news in this part of the province at any time in the last 40 years, you watched Max. He was not only professional, accurate and trustworthy, but Max cared about his viewers. His countless philanthropic efforts, including a mountain of support for youth in the Cornwall area, won’t soon be matched by anyone – TV personality or not. He’ll be missed in Ottawa, to be sure. But Cornwall sends a note of sorrow as well. SEA OF PINK By now Emilie Bonneville is likely recovering from surgery and planning out a treatment regimen for yet another battle against breast cancer. At just 30 she is one of the youngest in our region to grapple with the affliction not once,
but twice. Her friends in the Sapphire Hills neighbourhood east of Cornwall rallied to send a message to cancer…something akin to “You wanna fight? Cuz we’re ready.” Christine Andrews and Mandy Mason are clobbering cancer with hundreds of pink pumpkins they and other volunteers have been painting and selling to raise money for research and treatment of the debilitating condition. It’s rumoured even the likes of Ellen Degeneres has taken notice of social media posts featuring the little Cornwall-area project that has gone viral in every sense of the word. Great job everyone – it’s nice to know we have a community of such selfless people ready
to help one of our own. MONTREAL CANADIENS At the risk of upsetting Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs fans (Kevin Lajoie, Rodney Casselman, Todd Bennet, Guylaine Galvin, etc.) I have to tell you that MY Canadiens look poised for some success. The other perennial favourites here in Fun City…they’re kinda terrible (by comparison, of course). Now, lots can happen over the course of a hockey season (the first game hadn’t even been played when lame-brained Zack Kassian landed in rehab) but the Habs’ Stanley Cup door is wide open – all they have to do is walk through.

Editor: Farmers are very concerned with the TransPacific Partnership, an ongoing negotiation between global nations and the pacific rim countries in order to set standards for trade. There is an enormous opportunity to gain access to new markets. There is also risk. Conservatives say that in order to access Asia, we need to kill supply management but we know that they have been looking for an excuse to dismantle it for decades. The Liberals have different view. As climate change and political unrest make the global food industry more volatile, we NEED supply
management to protect our food producers, our resource sovereignty and our manufacturing diversity. The fact is, agriculture IS manufacturing. Just as an auto plant builds cars, Canadian farms of all sizes manufacture the food on your table. They do it with skilled workers and advanced technology while managing large risk. Risk is the business of a farmer. Farmers say they NEED supply management and Liberals are listening. Mr. Harper and Mr. Lauzon have not been listening. They bungled grain transport, letting millions of tons rot. They privatized the Canadian Wheat Board, and sold controlling interest to a
Saudi corporation. They have no problem with selling our food security to foreign interests.. . The NDP also miss the point. They only see the trans pacific negotiations as negative. They forget that these talks include labour and environmental concerns. If we want to REALLY champion these issues, we can’t walk away from the trade table. When Justin Trudeau and our very own candidate Bernadette Clement visited the Glengarry Highland Games, he strongly stated, “We’ve managed to sign large trade deals in the past, from NAFTA to Canada-Europe and others without having to put supply management into the
bargain...supply management has worked for years”. He agrees with farmers. Liberals can negotiate without axing supply management. Don’t forget, we created the Team Canada Trade Mission in 1994 that successive governments have often emulated but never duplicated. No one can tell us what we can or cannot do with our resources and products. Leadership is about striking a balance, managing risk and reaching out to new markets. Mr. Harper and Mr. Lauzon had their chance to strike this balance. They didn’t get it done. A Liberal government will. Jamie Labonte, Avonmore

‘Cruise control’ would still win Lauzon this riding Bernadette Clement’s Liberal campaign team started this marathon federal election campaign believing it could do the impossible.
Building local community
was eight in 2012. HERE AND THERE Brockville Police Service presented its 2016 draft operating budget to that city council last week. It projects a 0.29% decrease. The 2015 budget had about the same decrease. Talk of an Ontario Provincial Police cost estimate to take over policing might have something to do with the decreases. ... According to one of the financial papers, the average price of a detached house in greater Toronto passed the $1 million mark in September. The average price is rising at about 10% a year. Great if you are downsizing. Even greater if you are selling and moving to Cornwall. Not so great if you are a first-time buyers who would need at least $100,000 to put down. ... What does $50 million get you these days? Well, if you are a Queen’s University graduate and can afford to part with that kind of cash, it puts your name on a building. The Queen’s School of Business was renamed the Stephen Smith School of Business after the wealthy businessman donated $50M to the school. Smith, who made his money in financial services, graduated from Queen’s in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree. The $50M is a long leap from the $8 donation he made to the university as a student. THIS AND THAT North Bay is the latest Ontario hospital to wield a cost-cutting axe. It is cutting at least 158 jobs and closing 60 beds to help balance the books in wake of the Liberal government’s new health-care funding formula. It is a pretty simple formula: run a hospital in 2016 on a 2012 budget. The same government is telling doctors they will have to work longer hours for less money. ... Still think that former labor activist Mike Oliver, a retired prison guard now living in British Columbia, might be the best Cornwall city councillor never elected.

One too many zeros which left the impression it was $21,000. The salary was $2,100. Nick said he did work his way up the pay scale, to $21,000, but it took many years and dozen of summer and evening courses. These days it takes work to rule and strikes.

Ditto for Patrick Burger’s New Democratic Party troops who were hoping to parlay a strong showing in 2011 and Thomas Mulcair’s rising leadership poll numbers into an upset. Meanwhile, incumbent Guy Lauzon, who crushed opponents in the last three federal elections, said he was not taking anything for granted and was running “scared”. But according to the website Threehundredeight.com, which monitors all 308 federal ridings, Lauzon could switch on cruise control without any serious consequences, something, according to the website, many of his incumbent Tory colleagues can’t do. Some high profile Conservative incumbents are fighting for their political lives. If re-elected (okay, let’s go out on the limb and say when re-elected), there is a reasonable chance Lauzon will be in part of a minorityrun House of Commons. It is a toss-up which political brand will be stamped on that minority government. The website pegs Lauzon’s chances of reclaiming Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry at 95%. Or, on the flipside, the chances of Lauzon losing the seat is 5%, which can be translated as no chance of the Liberals or NDP unseating him. This might explain why heading into the final week of the campaign neither Justin Trudeau nor Thomas Mulcair has made an appearance in the riding. Oddly enough, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has visited one of the party’s safest ridings. Perhaps he had some time to kill.
On a stretch run, parties zero in on ridings they are fighting to hold and ridings they have a good chance of moving into the fold. In Brantford-Brant, where the Conservative incumbent is fighting off the NDP, Mulcair has visited the riding twice in the past five weeks. He has been to Brantford seven times in the last two years. The party believes it has a good shot at taking the riding. In 2011 Lauzon gobbled up 62% of votes cast in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. It was one of the biggest margins of victory in the country. In the two previous elections, his share of popular support was 55% and 57%. His first campaign victory was in 2004 when he upset long-time Liberal incumbent Bob Kilger. Two predictions: He will win his fifth straight federal election campaign with a percentage of around 58%. And, this will be his last campaign. TRIVIA This large Canadian insurance company owned Cornwall’s transit system from 1899 to 1977. TRIVIA ANSWER Lucien Lamoureux defeated Conservative incumbent Grant Campbell in 1962 to reclaim Stormont for the Liberals. When smiles are spooky: fear and the dentist’s chair Dr. Steven Deneka
mild to severe, and may stem from painful experiences, concerns about potentially invasive procedures or discomfort with a dentist’s bedside manner, perceiving someone as too serious or not empathetic enough. Some people may develop a phobia based on indirect sources, like hearing about someone else’s bad experience, or negative portrayals of dentists in the media. Solutions to calm patients’ nerves are twofold. A combination of technological advances and strategic dental techniques can go a long way in helping increase comfort levels. From a technology perspective, using digital
If you were expecting a Halloween column warning about the horrors of eating candy, you’ll be disappointed. Instead, I thought I’d write about something many of us might find a little scarier – fear of visiting the dentist, or “odontophobia”. I came across an article recently that said 40 per cent of Canadians are afraid of visiting the dentist. Don’t worry, my feelings weren’t hurt. I hear it all the time. In fact, when I was younger, I was nervous about going to the dentist until I found one who made me comfortable. Fear of visiting the dentist can range from
photographs can help a dentist explain the need for a procedure, and help tell a patient about what their treatment may entail before it’s done. Often what people fear is the unexpected. Technique can help soothe potential discomfort and fear. Gentle dentistry is essential to anticipate patient pain and help manage it appropriately. Local anesthetics play an important role in dental treatment, and knowing which parts of the mouth are more sensitive than others, and delivering injections strategically, can help reduce pain. Giving time for an anesthetic to take hold before starting a procedure
can also increase a patient’s comfort level. Finally, I’ve always tried to work efficiently to keep chair time down and help patients get back to their daily life that much quicker. It’s important to find a dentist who you feel comfortable with and explain any anxiety you’re feeling to come up with a plan that works for you. And about that candy? Everything in moderation is fine, just remember to get your little ghouls to brush their teeth!

Make sure it works: your smoke alarm can save your life
The Cornwall Fire Series will be hosting a series of special events throughout the community next week to mark Fire Prevention Week. Running from October 4 to October 10, Fire Prevention Week is a longstanding event to raise awareness of fire safety.
continue through the day. “This event will be a great opportunity to learn about fire safety and gain a better understanding of the work our firefighters do,” said Chief Voisine. SAFETY TIPS • Install smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. • Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound. • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working. • There are two kinds of alarms. Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn about flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms are quicker to warn about smoldering fires. It is best to use both types of alarms in the home. • A smoke alarm should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keep smoke
alarms away from the kitchen to reduce false alarms. They should be at least 10 feet (3 meters) from the stove. • People who are hard-of-hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms have strobe lights and bed shakers.

This year’s theme is “hear the beep where you sleep,” which encourages residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms in or directly outside sleeping areas. “Fire Prevention Week gives us a chance to get out into the community and speak to children and residents about fire safety and the importance of working smoke alarms,” said Cornwall Fire Chief Pierre Voisine. “We have a number of exciting events planned.” Fire Expo-Friday, October 9 The highlight of the week will be the Fire Expo taking place on Friday, October 9th in the Walmart parking lot on Ninth Street West. There will be live burn demonstrations, equipment & fire truck displays, fire extinguisher training, children’s activities and much more. All interested residents are welcome to attend. The activities will begin at 8 am and

as you go? Recapture some of the thrill of a leaf fight with a loved one as you stroll through the neighbourhood or on a path through the woods. Go for a drive in the country. In the U.S., people travel en masse to the northern states to see the colourful fall leaves. We shouldn’t ignore our own bounty! Go for a drive and feast your eyes on the hillsides filled with reds, yellows, and oranges. Winterize the house. This is the DIY guy or gal’s dream weekend. Put the patio furniture away, store the lawnmower, and put up the Christmas lights (why not do it while it’s still above zero?). Eat (the all-time winner, hands down). On the menu? Hot pureed soups, stews, roasted fowl, and fall-harvested vegetables. Need we say more?

We Canadians don’t overdo the Thanks giving thing, do we? There are no big shopping bonanzas, no big balloon parades, and no black hatted pilgrims at the table. There’s just crisp fall weather, an abundance of colour on the trees, and maybe some turkey ’n stuffing. Here are some of the things we all love to do on this low-glitz long weekend. Visit the farmers’ market. It won’t be long until it closes for the winter, so now is the time to catch the fall harvest. Cultivators and producers are offering up their finest locally grown vegetables, butchered meats, cheeses, preserves, and fall fruit. Go for a walk. Do you remember that childhood sound of walking to school on the sidewalks, scuffing leaves with your feet

CORNWALL, Ontario - Standing on the same football field that launched his 17-year CFL career, Moe ‘The Toe’ Racine wore the familiar 62 on his new honourary La Citadelle Patriotes jersey. School staff and students honoured the famed kicker during a ceremony prior to their Seaway Valley Football League match with the CCVS Raiders on Friday (Oct. 2). “This is fantastic...it’s hard to believe, because it was so long ago, but I still have the memories of playing high school football,” said Racine. “In Grade 9, I didn’t even know what a football was, but I learned quickly. Then we won three championships in a row. That was the start of it. Next, I went to Ottawa, and it was a great career.” The game’s first kick-off was a trigenerational effort, with some help from the father-and-son team of Thom Racine and Jarrett Racine. In 2014, Thom detailed his dad’s success in the CFL in ‘Moe The Toe - Never My Dream.’ The football match and ceremony also
coincided with La Citadelle’s annual pep rally ‘Blue, Blanc, Rouge.’ In recognition of Racine’s gridiron legacy starting at the Cornwall high school in the mid-to-late ‘50s when it was known as St. Lawrence High School, La Citadelle principal Julie Charland says a commemoration plaque will be posted in the near future. Charland described the former Rough Rider as an avid observer of the Pats during their home games. Over the last few years, Racine has been a loyal fan, speaking with students and watching proudly on the sidelines of his former stomping grounds, as a new generation of local athletes enjoy the sport. “This is where his career began, and he’s been following our team - we had to put this in context to celebrate. It just took a little while to get this going,” said Charland. In November 2013, Racine was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, four decades after his legendary run as a Rough Rider from ’58 to ’74.
Former CFLer Moe ‘The Toe’ Racine stands with his grandson, Jarrett, and son, Thom, at a ceremony commemorating his football career taking root 59 years ago on the La Citadelle field in Cornwall, Ont., on Oct. 2. Adam Brazeau

Les écoles du CSDCEO, pour apprendre dans un climat scolaire positif entre la réussite des élèves et le milieu scolaire où l’apprentissage a lieu. En 2015, le CSDCEO a mené son troisième sondage auprès des élèves, des parents et des membres de son personnel. Les résultats dégagés en sont très positifs: Nous sommes passés à un taux de 66 % d’élèves satisfaits du climat scolaire en 2011 à 78 % en 2015, soit une augmentation de 12 %;

The art of putting The majority of the game of golf is putting – pure and simple. It looks so easy – rolling that little ball into a nearby hole. But mastering the skill has threatened many a golfer’s sanity. Here are a few tips to help improve your putting skills. • Use just one ball when you practice your putting. This is closer to what a real game is like. You tend to concentrate better this way than if you have a bucket of balls to keep digging into. And be sure to practice your putting daily. • Putting isn’t all in the wrists. When you’re putting, the palms of your hands face each other. This prevents one hand from dominating and ensures that both work together for you. • Make sure you’re totally relaxed before you strike the ball. Loosen up your muscles so they feel flabby and jelly-like. Never tense up your
muscles when putting! • Make your back and follow through strokes the same length. • Keep your putter face square by weakening your left hand and strengthening your right. • Rely less on your wrists and more on your shoulders when putting. • Keep that left wrist firm. • Relax your knees a little. Don’t lock up. • Your heels should be shoulder-width apart. • Gary McCord advises that on curved putts, keep your feel parallel to the line you’ve chosen, not parallel to the hole. • As you make contact with the ball, you want to accelerate the putter. Keep the putter grip moving toward your target. • Practice your putt at home on your carpet stay with it. • It’s better to miss a putt by sending it when the weather is bad or you can’t get to the • Have something at stake at every hole so beyond the hole than by having it come up golf course. you become accustomed to putting under short. Finishing off the shot will be easier. • Find a putter that works well for you and pressure.

Shar’s Tip of the Week To get rid of hard-water rust stains on commodes, tubs, and sinks, just squeeze a little tooth paste onto an old brush and scrub away. Or scrub the stain with a paste of borox and lemon juice or a solution of equal parts of turpentine and salt. Whichever method you choose, attack rust stains right away. The sooner you deal with them, the easier they are removed.

NEWS
Off the Shelf: news from SD&G County Library Susan Wallwork
swallwork@sdglibrary.ca
With the arrival of Fall, it also brings with it many beginnings: the beginning of a new season, the beginning of a new school year, and the beginning of hockey! This idea of beginnings also comes into play at the SD&G County Library. One of the buzz phrases surrounding libraries right now is “maker spaces” and here at the Library, we’re getting ready to embark on our own journey into this maker space realm. Over the last year, staff at the Library have
D.R. fencing
been researching and preparing maker space kits ideal for program use at our branches. With eighteen branches to consider, these kits need to not only be portable, but they also have to encourage the users to explore, learn and create! And so, now that Fall is upon us, we’re beginning to introduce these kits and programs. Our maker space kits range from basic, low technology kits to complex, high tech programs. Both are designed to challenge patrons of all ages to use their imaginations, their creativity and their intellect. Now, what exactly do we have to offer? Let’s start with our low-tech kits – we’ve got a
button maker that is perfect for the artist in everyone. Whether you want to create your own design by hand or use drawings from the computer, this maker kit lets everyone add a flash of personal flare. As well, we’ve invested in sets of littleBits; electronic kits that introduce users to the world of circuits and motors. These kits use the idea of building blocks to let individuals design and invent things that can move, light up or manipulate other objects. We’ve also explored maker space kits that may involve more advanced knowledge of technology. For example, come in and try out our
Makey-Makey. This kit uses everyday objects to control programs on your computer. And then there is the LEGO Mindstorms - the robot you’ve always dreamed of creating (with all the classic fun of LEGO)! This Fall is the perfect time to visit one of our branches and join us as we begin to offer more and more of these exciting maker space programs. Talk to your branch staff to see what they have planned, or contact Susan Wallwork, Communications & Marketing Librarian, if you have a group that might be interested in setting up a special program for your organization. Cheers to new beginnings.
We carry all your roofing supplies.

Digging and receding waters reveal the past Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com
They were making a pilgrimage to where they were born, where they had grown up, where they had once worked. We were just curiosity seekers, but we could empathize a bit, because during this summer, one of us had revisited Coniston, Ontario and the other the Isle of Wight, England. Both were places that memories of our separate childhoods. The places of our roots are somewhat changed, but still relatively intact. However, the so-called “Lost Villages” of the Seaway era are gone, but thanks to the current low water levels of Lake St. Lawrence, ‘skeletons’ are once again being revealed: rectangular outlines of foundations; poured concrete sidewalk slabs; carefully decapitated tree stumps; a railroad tie or
spike; bricks; a car chassis; a medicine bottle; shards of pottery; a door hinge… I just heard you say, “Did you take any pictures?” Hmmm….Is the Pope Catholic? I followed up our canoe and foot exploration by a flight in a light aircraft based at the Iroquois Airport, overflying the shoreline as far east as the Moses-Saunders generating station and dam. I know what you’re thinking: “On your flight, were you able to take any pictures?” Hmmm…. Yes, the Pope is definitely Catholic, very Catholic. Thanks to the years of zebra mussel filtering of the water, the visibility under the St. Lawrence approaches that of Tobermory and the Caribbean. Far below my lens was a ghostly roadmap.

On August 12, 2012 a skeleton was discovered when a Leicester, England car park was being excavated. Eventually, it was confirmed as being that of English king Richard III. (I’m not sure it was by the unpaid overdue parking violation ticket in its pocket, or by some other more sophisticated means.) Archaeologists claim that if you dig very carefully, you just might uncover something that may prove to be quite interesting. I don’t dig very often, but the drop in depth of about four feet of Lake St. Lawrence between
Iroquois and the Cornwall dam has uncovered some very interesting mid-Twentieth Century artifacts. Within one week at the end of September I was able to explore what the receding waters were revealing. First, it was by our canoe, ‘Dances With Waves’. We paddled from Crysler Marina to the Long Sault Marina. All the while we marveled at the stumps, boulders, roadways, building foundations and sidewalks that were being exposed. For two hours we able to walk on some of the streets and sidewalks of the former Aultsville village site. We were not alone. We met a few folks who were even older than us. They had lived in Aultsville before it was inundated on July 1, 1958.

WANTED POSTERS
A group of elementary school students were on a field trip to the local police station. Several of the children were fascinated by the wanted posters on the wall. Little Billy raised his hand and asked the police officer giving them the tour who the people on the wall were. “Those are pictures of criminals we are looking for,” answered the policeman. “We call those wanted posters.” Little Billy looked puzzled. His hand shot back up into the air. “Well,” he wondered, “why didn’t you just keep them when you took their pictures?

Happy birthday, Alma Congratulations to Shelly Mair for winning a gift basket worth over $1100 in the “round Up You Change” event at Giant Tiger. Great Customers and Great Community Partners allowed us to raise $5033.00 for the Children’s Treatment Centre.
Alma Carter celebrated a 100th birthday with friends and family at Heartwood, a long-term care home in Cornwall, last week.
Pet Tip of the Week: As we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend, make sure to keep human food out of reach for your pets. Leftover human food can be hazardous to your cat or dog. Chicken and turkey bones can easily shatter and choke them. Other food items to keep away from your pets include coffee grounds, macadamia nuts, salt, tomato, potato and rhubarb leaves and stems, alcoholic beverages and onions, as well as anything with mould.
FALL CLEANING ~ Mulching and composting are great ways to get rid of your leaves this fall. Mulch leaves with a lawn mower to reduce the bulk of the pile, then add the mulch in small amounts to your compost. It will break down along with your kitchen scraps to make an ecofriendly fertilizer. Flu season: Don’t forget to cough into your sleeve, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap or hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, stay home! Have you seen the great things happening at The Salvation Army? Enjoy apple picking this fall, then bake a fabulous pie!
