City mulls offer to take ownership of bridge span Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – The company in charge of cutting up the former Seaway International Bridge has a gift, of sorts, for the City of Cornwall – the high level arch of the structure that was lowered to the ground weeks ago. The big question now is, does the city want it? Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy confirmed last Friday officials with Demo Plus have offered the span to the city, presumably to be used as a crossing over the Cornwall
Canal for pedestrians. But the mayor said the city is in no position to accept the offer just yet, and has a metric tonne of questions concerning the span. “We will going down to take a look and discuss what has to happen,” the mayor said in an interview. “Apparently in the past (Demo Plus) was told there’s no interest in it.” It’s believed the span is coated in leadbased paint, and there are questions about how much it would cost to move the span, set it up on a foundation and adequately

LAUZON WINS: Fought two campaigns, including fight against wife’s cancer Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Veteran local MP Guy Lauzon fought two campaigns in this federal election - he’s won one, and is hopeful about the other. Lauzon cruised to another election win, with more than 6,500 votes separating him from second-place finisher Bernadette Clement Monday night. Lauzon told supporters he faced an uphill climb on two counts. “For the last 120 days, we’ve had another campaign,” he said, referring to his wife Frances’ cancer diagnosis four months ago and his voice cracking a bit. “That took the wind out of our sails – for about eight hours. Then we decided we would go on a campaign to beat this. “If you think we had a victory today, we’ll have a helluva lot bigger victory over this.” His wife will undergo her final treatment Tuesday, but in the meantime Lauzon is savouring a fifth straiight election win. He last tasted defeat more than 15 years ago. “You Conservatives know how to party. And tonight is party night,” he said to cheers from supporters. But his election win Monday night is bittersweet. Lauzon will sit in opposition as the Justin Trudeau Liberals steam-rolled the country. “I lost some great colleagues,” he said. “Our government has made this government so
proud on an international stage. “I’m going to hold the Liberal government’s feet to the fire. They better damn well do as good as we did.” The Conservative author of five-straight wins was the envy of challengers Bernadette Clement (Liberal), Patrick Burger (NDP) and Elaine Kennedy (Green). “I have no regrets. It was a younger team, mixed with experienced supporters from previous campaigns, and we worked together beautifully,” Clement said, adding she was pleased with the national results. “People want change. They want new leadership, they want open, accessible, and energetic. That’s what they’re going to get with Justin Trudeau.” With all 242 polls reporting Lauzon garnered 27,041 votes, Clement 20,450, Burger 4,333 and Kennedy 1,192.
GPR GOES RED: In a rebuke of Conservative policies, Liberal candidate Francis Drouin cruised to a win in nearby Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. Drouin defeated Tory incumbent Pieree Lemieux. With all 263 polls reporting Drouin MP Guy Lauzon addresses supporters while his wife Frances looks on. had 34,205 votes to Lemieux’s 23,284. comes to devoting staff time to helping set up the program. “After that’s done the program runs and it’s a matter of keeping up the list of volunteers,” said Marie-Paul. Councillors were impressed. “You’ve listed so many great benefits to this program, including the sense of ownership and pride in their neighbourhoods,” said Coun. Carilyne Hebert. “I think it’d be interesting to see. Perhaps we can start with a pilot year. It would be nice to start small and then grow into year two.” Coun. Justin Towndale agreed. “I think it’s an excellent idea,” he said. “My folks live at a corner, and people think that is a great place to throw garbage.” The city is expected to respond to the program request in the new year, with enough time to allow for recruitment before April. The program would typically run from April to October each year.

think that tends to become contagious,” said Coun. David Murphy. The Millards have spent the last three years picking up garbage they find while out for walks. They said their program will help beautify the city. “We find there’s an element of the population in Cornwall that think it is ok to throw garbage on our streets or in our parks or even on private lawns,” said Rod Millard. “We feel that such a program will go further than picking up litter. “It may raise the consciousness among people it is not ok to throw garbage on our streets. It could serve to change attitudes among some of the people. We think it is a strong message for a city to send when they have an adopt-a-street program. It says litter will not be tolerated.” The Millards and Legault figure it will cost about $60 to outfit a volunteer in the program with the necessary equipment to begin their chores. There is also more expenses when it

CORNWALL, Ontario – City hall is considering a plan to fund the creation of an adopt-a-street program in Cornwall to help combat the work of litterbugs in the Seaway City. A trio of concerned citizens met with city council Tuesday night and made what seemed like a successful plea for such a volunteer program to be created and funded by city hall. The program would see residents patrol a specific portion of the city and pick up litter
found on both private and public properties. The volunteers would, presumably, be outfitted with trash sticks for skewering the refuse, garbage bags, gloves and reflective clothing. Rod and Marie-Paul Millard and Denis Legault seemed to gain a sympathetic ear from city councillors Tuesday when they presented their plan for the program. While council sent the item to administrators to prepare a report on the subject, every one of the elected officials who spoke on the matter were supportive. “It’s nice to see that sense of civic pride. Outdoor street hockey challenge moves to more spacious Montreal Road Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – A popular outdoor street hockey tournament is taking on a different look this fall. Santa’s Street Hockey challenge, which goes Nov. 21, will still feature plenty of stick work, sharp-shooting and sprawling saves, but the location is moving to Montreal Road from Pitt Street. Organizer Robin McIntosh said the Montreal Road from McConnell to Baldwin Avenue will be closed to allow for wall-to-wall street hockey. “We’re also going to fence it off,” he said. The move to Montreal Road allows for more room to operate the growing event, and alleviates concerns about the slope of the street on Pitt. Students from St. Lawrence High School, St. Joseph’s and Bishop MacDonell celebrate Santa’s Street Hockey Challenge with organizers. Also new this year is a school challenge for both a junior and senior division. The top the most spirit will be awarded $500 each. CORNWALL, Ontario – Santa’s route is changing - again. A last-minute push by some downtown business people, who felt they had been bypassed when parade organizers said last week the route would exclude the Pitt and Second street intersection for the first time in years, was successful Friday in having organizers agree to yet another switch.
The 2015 Cornwall Santa Claus Parade will still begin at St. Lawrence High School, but will head west on Second Street to Augustus Street before turning south on Augustus Street and ending there, said a social media post from parade organizers. It’s believed parade floats will line up along the west side of Augustus, while waiting school buses will be parked on the east side of the street to transport school children and other parade participants to the Cornwall Civic Complex.
Organizers had originally planned to turn the parade south at Marlborough Street this year and then follow Montreal Road to the complex, but downtown business people were upset that their area of the city was to be bypassed. Andre Pommier was critical of the initial plan, but was pleased Friday to learn of the reconsideration during a meeting with organizers. “It was a great meeting,” he said. “I learned a lot about the logistics of having a parade. It’s all about
emergency services…and having Second and Water streets closed off would have been too dangerous. “There was no politics involved.” This year the parade awards will be handed out in the salons at the complex and the public is invited to attend. The parade is slated to begin at 5 p.m., Nov. 21 from St. Lawrence High School. More information on the parade can be found at cornwallsantaclausparade.com.

Popular beer-tasting event to combat diabetes returns Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A beer tasting event that last year raised more than $15,000 to help young victims of diabetes is back this year with a vengeance. The popular annual event will see as many as 10 craft breweries set up shop at the Agora Centre in Cornwall Nov. 6. “We’re so pleased with the number of craft breweries that have signed on to help us this year,” said organizer Jeff Lalonde. “Our event has grown every year and we can’t thank our sponsors and beer tasters enough. “With their help we will find a cure.” The third round of Crafting a Cure raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), an organization dedicated to type one diabetes research funding and advocacy. Lalonde and his wife Cherie know all about diabetes. Their teenaged children Ashley and Evan both have type-one diabetes. This summer Ashley slipped into a diabetic coma and nearly died. Without the help of her quick-thinking brother who force-fed her a pair of juice boxes, and the work of doctors and nurses it’s likely the 17-year-old would have become another statistic in a disease that
kills all too often. “She was doing everything right,” said Lalonde, adding his daughter had eaten properly and was taking the medications necessary to keep diabetes in check. “Her body just absorbed more than it normally would and caused her to crash.” More than 250 beer enthusiasts are expected at the Crafting a Cure event. Tickets are available at Scotiabank in Cornwall.

Something stinks – theft from garlic festival CORNWALL, Ontario - Something stinks for the new summer festival - and it’s not the garlic. With over 70 exhibitors and an estimated 5,000 visitors at Lamoureux Park on Sunday, August 30, Eastern Ontario Garlic Fest co-organizer Brenda Norman of Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects is calling the inaugural event a “great sucess.” It’s what happened after that has left organizers shaken up. The festival’s donated prizes (worth roughly $800) were stolen from the Lion’s Club Bandshell. Organizers had left the items locked up overnight following the event with the intention of collecting them during the next day’s cleanup. “I was heartbroken and didn’t know what to do,” Norman, the president of KCEP and owner of Kozroots Garlic and Herb Farm, said in a statement. “Our volunteer team had worked for months to put on this amazing event and when we discovered that the donations were missing, all of the enthusiasm and pride from what we had accomplished was stripped away.” According to organizers, the initial police investigation has proven unsuccessful. “So KCEP is seeking the assistance of the Cornwall and surrounding community to help find those responsible,” said Norman. “If you have any information regarding these events, we ask that you please come forward and contact

Trunk sale expands to two days this year Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - A popular fall event that has raised more than $60,000 for area charities over the years has outgrown itself. The 2015 Trunk Sale hosted by W3G & Co. has expanded to two days this year from one. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. the weekend of Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at Marlin’s Orchard east of Cornwall. The sale, which benefits the MS Society of Canada, had to expand because of the incredible demand it has created among local shoppers looking to enjoy a different sales experience.
“A lot of our guests said last year they weren’t able to visit in one day,” said co-organizer Julie D’Alessio-Hickman. Her partner Debbis Burns agreed. “The only way we could expand was to go over two days,” she said. In addition to the added day, the trunk sale will also include some delicious table fare from five culinary arts programs from area high schools. That’s on top of some of the delectable treats prepared by the vendors who take part in the sale. “A lot of these kids wouldn’t have the chance to be exposed to so many patrons at one time,” said D’Alessio-Hickman.
The high schools include Holy Trinity, L’Heritage, St. Joseph’s, CCVS and St. Lawrence. Last year more than $20,000 was raised by the trunk sale, which was donated to the M.S. Society. More than 200 vendors have signed on to the event. Karen Torrie-Racine, volunteer office manager of the local MS office, said her people are thrilled with the philanthropy of W3G & Co. “We think this is an awesome event,” she said. “Not only for the community, but for our chapter. “The girls go above and beyond...to provide a unique shopping experience and they never fail to amaze us.
“We’re very grateful to be the recipients of all their hard work.” Tickets to the event are $5 a day, or $8 for the weekend. They can be purchased at Pure Aesthetics, Life’s Little Pleasures, Love Love Food, Joe’s Place, Marlins and the Quirky Carrot (Alexandria).

OPINION
Love him or not, Lauzon knows how to win Todd Lihou
todd.lihou@tc.tc
If I heard it once Monday night, I heard it a thousand times: “The voters are never wrong.” But critics are pointing to the fact that here in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry we have not one, but two senior members of government who now sit as part of opposition as opposed to the government. Monday night the electorate, in its wisdom, sent incumbent Guy Lauzon back to Ottawa for the fifth consecutive time. If that string of wins isn’t a local record, it’s got to be pretty damn close. In doing so voters sent the message, yet again, that they feel Liberal Bernadette Clement is still not worthy of the job of MP. This in spite of the fact that a tidal wave of Liberal red washed across Canada. The big question we will now hear is, why? Why would local voters return Lauzon, a Tory, to Ottawa? Why not give Clement (or any of the other candidates) a chance? Why are we always so backward in this part of Ontario? I don’t know if I have an answer, and I’m not sure if those questions are particularly fair, but it’s clear that voters in our region have their favourites. Perhaps we vote for the name on the ballot, not the party, which would explain why a massive federal Liberal majority did not translate into a similar result locally. Tory MPP Jim MacDonell won last year when the provincial
Liberals were racking up a majority of their own. Maybe it is because we are an older population. The last time I looked the median age here is 45, while nationally that figure drops closer to 40, and as most of us know older voters typically cast ballots with a Conservative bend more often than not. Or maybe it’s because there’s something in the water…or maybe it’s none of these things, or all of them. Pundits with more expertise than I can muster will debate the ins and outs of Lauzon’s win long after the final ballot is counted. But one thing is undeniable – Lauzon knows how to win. Regardless of your political affiliation, five straight wins in anything is a dynasty and something to be immensely proud of. Lauzon told me during the campaign that he could outwork anyone on the ballot. It’s kind of an arrogant statement to make (though I know he didn’t mean it that way) considering the company he keeps on the ballot, but Lauzon admits he had to dig deeper than most during this election. His lovely wife Frances is battling nonHodgkin’s lymphoma. They got word of her diagnosis four months ago and Frances underwent her final treatment Tuesday. With his voice cracking Monday night you could tell her condition was often first and foremost during this election. But he won anyway – and while many won’t like the result, you kind of have to respect it.
While the NDP’s Patrick Burger and Green candidate Elaine Kennedy deserve some of that respect too for simply putting their names forward, this was a two-horse race from the start between Lauzon and Clement. And while she made significant strides in this race, Clement still couldn’t do enough to will herself a win. And if anyone wanted the win more than Clement, I’d like to meet them. When we last spoke face-to-face for an extended period of time her voice was scratchy and her expression was worn. Clement worked hard and put in long hours of campaigning door-to-door. She won the debates I saw. Perhaps she deserved better than she got, but in elections there are no points for second place.
Behind the scenes, I think the Liberals owe her something. It says here Clement will be offered an appointment, perhaps befitting of a strong female with a political pedigree and a background as a lawyer. Perhaps it will be something better than the job of an MP in this riding. That position continues to be filled by the same man who last tasted the bitterness of defeat some 15 years ago. Another thing I heard during the election came via a social media post that went something like: “Lauzon is a nice guy, he’s just a member of the wrong party.” They say nice guys often finish last – like so much else, it’s true everywhere but around here.
Editor: Last month Guy Lauzon stopped by my house while on the campaign trail. Although I immediately indicated my disdain for Stephen Harper, Guy did pay me the courtesy of a conversation. I brought up numbers on Health Care, Trade as well as other issues supported with facts.. On no fewer than 5 occasions Guy retorted that it is nothing more than an attempt by the CBC and the Liberal media to tarnish the PM’s solid reputation. I beg to differ. This is the same media that crucified Jean Chretien 10 years ago.
It is the same media that labeled Paul Martin, “Mr. Dithers”. Stephen Harper was the architect of his own demise. In the end he underestimated not only Justin Trudeau, but the majority of Canadians. There is no better illustration of such than his dying moments in power. Least we not forget his photo ops with Rob Ford in a pathetic attempt to rally the “ Ford Nation”. A rag tag band of about 1500 misfits. Harper, the tough on crime, mandatory minimum jail for pot heads, rubbing shoulders with a crack smoking alcoholic who publicly displayed daily acts of
Buffoonish behavior. Then, his call to Canadians to report to the newly established RCMP tip line, ‘Barbaric Cultural Practices’ . Seriously folks, just what the heck are ‘Barbaric Cultural Practices’? One can amusingly assume Harper was referring to male circumcision and foreigners who stink up apartment hallway’s with the smell of curried chicken. This ‘Barbaric Cultural Practices’ Bill was no doubt directed at the few who subscribe to the divisive politics of hatred and bigotry. Fortunately, the majority of Canadians have the presence of mind and intellectual sensibility to
have recognized the Bill as such. The 70% of the electorate who never supported Harper’s Alliance/Reform/Progressive Conservative coalition in the first place finally spoke up and said..........ENOUGH. As for the thin skinned Harper supporters who feel the Liberal victory was a result of a Liberal Media conspiracy, suck it up. What you’ve just witnessed is...... democracy in Action. As hard as they tried, the Liberals could not sell stubborn Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry on repainting the riding. So, while the Red Tide was redecorating the Canadian election map with a high-powered spray gun Monday, Guy Lauzon and the Conservatives were giving the riding a fresh coat of solid Tory blue. Lauzon, the retired federal civil servant better known as the local Canada Day organizer and aquatic centre fundraiser when he first stepped on the political stage in 2002 as a Canadian Alliance candidate, losing to long-time Liberal incumbent Bob Kilger, swept to his fifth straight victory Monday. He reinvented himself as a member of the retooled Conservative Party, took on Kilger in 2004 and surprised the Liberals with a comfortable margin of victory. Since then, he has racked up four straight unprecedented landslide victories. It is just the third time in 80 years that Cornwall has been represented by a member of Parliament sitting in opposition. And, Lauzon is just the third local Conservative elected since Lionel Chevrier began his long tenure that ran from 1935 to 1954, when he was appointed first president the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. Other local Conservative MPs, both serving single terms, were Grant Campbell (1958) and Norm Warner (1984). Campbell was part of the Diefenbaker government. Warner served with the Brian Mulroney government. When most of the riding went to bed Monday night and riding polls were still being counted, Lauzon held a more than comfortable 6,000-plus lead on Liberal challenger Bernadette Clement, who had doubled her vote from four years ago when she was chased out of the ball park by Lauzon and barely held off NDP candidate Mario Leclerc.
The local Liberals ran a smarter campaign this time but could not cash in on Trudeaumania Two. Today, Clement has returned to her city council seat with questions about her future role in federal politics. Thanks to the unexpected Liberal majority, she has four years to consider a third shot at the title. No defeated candidate in a riding involving Cornwall has taken a third straight run. In politics, four years is a long time. Clement has strong ties to both the Ontario and federal Liberals. She could be short-listed for some sort of plum appointment. She is owed consideration. Big loser in the local vote count was the New Democratic Party. After chasing the Liberals to the wire in 2011, candidate Patrick Burger finished around 16,000 votes behind Clement. It was preOrange Wave territory for the NDP in StormontDundas-South Glengarry. It is reasonable to believe that Lauzon has fought his final battle for the Conservatives. He will be brushing against 76 when the riding goes back to the polls. He just might decide that it is time to pull the plug on an amazing political career. Waiting in the wings is United Counties warden Eric Duncan. TRIVIA ANSWER Cornwall voters decided in a 1971 referendum to abolish the ward system in favour of elections at large. Each of six wards elected two members of council. TRIVIA It was a hockey first for Cornwall on May 14, 1972. HERE AND THERE Belated condolences to the Ouderkirk family on the passing of husband, father and grandfather, Mel. Long Sault Yarns employees swap stories at reunion CORNWALL, Ontario - Mike Arcand and dozens of his closest friends swapped stories about the night in March 1972 when they had to spend the night at Long Sault Yarns. That story, and bunch of others, were shared Oct. 3 when Long Sault Yarns held a reunion. It was March 1972, and the so-called ‘Storm of the Century’ was dumping reams of snow on North America. “It (was) a chance to reconnect,” said Arcand. “The plant has been closed for 10 years now, and about 25 people who used to work there have passed away. “So we want to get together.” The reunion took place Oct. 3 at the Army, Navy, Air Force Hall on Marlborourgh Street in Cornwall.
From left are Long Sault Yarns former employees Mike Arcand, Fern Piquette, Betty Cote and Frank Gordon.

REMEMBER
Arcand said the plant employed nearly 300 people at its maximum, but when the doors closed in 2005 that number had dropped to less than 200. The plant underwent a number of name and ownership changes after opening 50 years ago...way back in 1965. It was known as Dominion Textiles until
1998, when things changed to Cavalier. Then from 2001 to the closing in 2005 Gildan Activewear was the chief employer. Arcand worked at the plant right up until its closing, nearly a 40-year stretch. “We wanted to do a reunion a couple of years ago, but we couldn’t,” he said. “But now people (were) saying let’s do it.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – An oil pipeline that runs through South Stormont along Highway 401 will soon begin operation following National Energy Board (NEB) approval. The much-ballyhooed Line 9 will be used by Enbridge Inc. to send oil from Western Canada through to Sarnia and on to Montreal. The 2.5-foot pipe will contain pressurized oil and has been the subject of intense scrutiny and even criticism since Enbridge announced it wanted to use the infrastructure to increase flow eastward. The startup of the pipeline has been delayed over environmental worries, including the protection of water crossings along the route. Enbridge has completed high-pressure water testing on three portions of the line west of
Cornwall. “The successful (tests) confirm the NEB’s confidence in the integrity of the pipeline and its confidence that the line can safely be returned to operation,” read a media release from the regulator. Line 9 was built in 1976 to carry oil eastward, but for the last 17 years was allowed to transport foreign oil into the western reaches of the country. Critics have spoken out about the 60,000 extra barrels a day the company intends to carry. The NEB indicates there are strict conditions for Line 9 in the first year that includes patrols every two weeks and integrity testing of the pipeline quarterly. Enbridge also has to limit the pressure of the pipeline for the first year.

the chill off. A roast that goes into the oven refrigeratorcold will likely yield a piece of meat that is overcooked on the outside and undercooked at the center. As you slice the roast, you’ll see a bull’s-eye
effect: The middle is rare (or even raw) while the outside is well done. This is less of a problem with smaller cuts like chicken breasts–though even those benefit from resting at room temperature for five or 10 minutes before cooking.

SPORTS
Circle May 2, 2016 on your calendar Thom Racine If you liked the drama of last week’s Blue Jays Rangers game five, mark your calendars for May 2nd 2016, 7:07 p.m., because that’s the next time Jose Bautista will have to face the Texas Rangers. That will be the night the Rangers’ pitcher will put the first pitch in Jose Bautista’s ear for ending their season in epic style. Remember 1997, “Bloody Wednesday,” when the Red Wings waited an entire year to get back
their job was to keep the Jose and the Jays in the yard. They didn’t and when the ball left Jose’ bat, what was he supposed to do, say he was sorry. No, he did what any Ranger would have done, what any hitter would have done in that moment and in that place. He reacted and had some fun. In a day and age where we teach our kids to have fun and in some cases (which I find ridiculous) don’t even keep score of their games, Bautista had some fun in the moment. Did he have too much fun? So what if he did.
The energy inside Rogers Center last week demanded it, they had just witnessed the wildest of innings in baseball history, the unpopular right call made at the crucial moment, followed by the baseball Gods seemingly handcuffing the Rangers for three straight plays and the baddest most in your face karma charged bat flip in history. They say the greatest stars perform on the greatest of stages Joey Bats did just that...lets hope the Jays have some more magic left.

at Claude Lemieux, make no doubt about it Jose knows its coming too.... For what you ask. Consider the unwritten rule in sports, “don’t show up the other team” or something to that affect. Here is why I don’t have a problem with the Bautista “bat flip” of last Wednesday nights game five. 50,000 crazy and emotionally charged fans, not to mention a national audience as emotional, watching in. If the Rangers didn’t like what happened,

Cornwall teen sharp-shooter’s yard sale aims high with low prices Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Mary Patrick has her sights set on the 2020 Olympics, and bargain hunters are helping the 17-year-old get there. The Cornwall sharp-shooter, along with her stepfather Scott Gardiner, hosted a yard sale on Saturday (Oct. 17) raising roughly $909.35 to support her journey of becoming a member of Canada’s 2017 national junior team. The proceeds will help cover the costs of this year’s qualifying competitions, the next is only a few weeks away. Hundreds of items were donated such as desks, air conditioner, microwave, table, chairs, clothes, videos, wheelchair, and dresser. “I can’t express how thankful I am toward the community,” said Patrick. “We were originally hoping for $500 -
we’re amazed by the turnout and the donations,” added Gardiner. The CCVS student is steady training for her upcoming competition at the end of October. “I’ll be going to my coach’s house and going to Ottawa to train. Mostly what I can do is mental management, proper breathing techniques, and relaxing myself. It’s just repetition of all of that,” said Patrick. This summer, the Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School student competed in Bisley, England and earned the highest Canadian score in the under-25 division at a National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom event. As a member of the Royal Canadian Army Cadet National Rifle Team, Patrick scored a total of 686.87 during the 11 matches in which she competed. She was presented the Gerry Ouellette Award, an award presented each year to the top under 25 member of a
real estate
Canadian Team in Grand Aggregate by the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association. In addition to many other national accomplishments and champion titles. “It’s (sharp-shooting) something I like. It takes the stress off of me, and a sport’s a sport,” she said. Patrick is also a cadet warrant officer at 2403 Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.
Fundraiser right on target: Cornwall’s Mary Patrick and her stepfather Scott Gardiner hosted a ‘Future Olympian Yard Sale’ to help the 17-year-old compete in the 2020 Olympics, on Saturday, October 17, 2015. Adam Brazeau

Globally acclaimed documentary being screened here for the first time CORNWALL, Ontario - A documentary that details the story of a Cornwall man who nearly stabbed a local woman to death is being screened publicly in the Seaway City for the first time. The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation will be hosting a fundraiser and open forum which will include the screening of the film NCR: Not Criminally Responsible on
Nov. 7 at Aultsville Theatre. The film recounts the story of Sean Clifton, a former Cornwall resident, who was declared not criminally responsible after he stabbed Julie Bouvier in the storefront of the Cornwall Walmart in 1999. The film looks at both sides of the discussion and personalizes the moral concerns raised regarding mental illness. “This movie has been shown around the world so we appreciate the opportunity to finally share our story with those living right

here in our community. Through this journey of forgiveness and healing we certainly have a greater understanding of the stigma that surrounds mental illness,” said Bouvier’s father Andy. After the screening there will be an open forum with a respected panel of guests including four-time Emmy Award-winning producer and director of NCR, John Kastner; Noella and Andy Bouvier and Christine Penney, VicePresident of Community Programs at CCH. The Foundation is currently raising funds for
f cus
the new Addiction and Mental Health Centre which will be located on the McConnell property. There are seven services that will make the move to the new building, with occupancy projected to take place by the end of 2016. “Having all community based services under one roof will help with access and transfer from one program to another,” said Penney. For more information, or to purchase tickets for the screening, please call the Foundation office at 613 930-4508 www.cornwallhospitalfoundation.ca.

God looked around His garden And found an empty place, He then looked down upon earth And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful He always takes the best. He knew you were suffering, He knew you were in pain. He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And hills were hard to climb So He closed your weary eyelids And whispered ‘peace be thine’. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God called you home.
Love you forever, Diane and Carole

news
Airlines should treat us like dogs instead of like cattle Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com Airline travel no longer has the cachet it once had. Until the Second World War, air travel was exclusively for the rich and famous. During the war thousands of paratroopers made one-way trips by C-47s and Ju 52/3s. Unfortunately, due to heavy flak and marauding enemy fighters many bomber crews also made one-way flights. Then came the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. Trans-Atlantic and other long distance flights became accessible to the unwashed masses. The Boeing 747s were able to accommodate over 350
travellers at a time. As the girth of passengers increased, the width of airliner seats and leg room decreased. To compound the problem, aisles became narrower and the amount, weight and size of checked and carry-on luggage increased dramatically. Thanks to the invention of luggage wheels, little old ladies were able to trundle luggage that would have given a porter a hernia. Medium range flights from major cities to major cities, such as to New York City from Toronto or Montreal in the 1960s via ‘slow’ propdriven aircraft such as the Vickers Viscount took less downtown -to-downtown time than today.
Today we have time-consuming traffic congestion to and from downtowns to the airport. Parking lots are vast. Security checks of our luggage and of our persons can be a painstaking ordeal. My dog used to be a better air traveller than many of today’s loutish, impatient and demanding passengers. Keesha had made the trip between home and the West Coast four times without a complaint. In the course of her 12 years of flying, in 25 different types of aircraft, not once did she whine or appear to worry. Every time an airliner touches the runway, the cabin attendant pleads, “Sit! Stay!”, but the
Frozen Celebration Cake
passengers insist on immediately rising up from their seats, struggling with their over-size carryons, then fume and fret because the aisles are gridlocked. Dog kennels must to large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around when it is confined in it. If only provision of passenger space in the cabin were as generous! Did you know that most airlines impose a surcharge of $100 per leg when a dog is carried? Therefore, an Ottawa to Edmonton flight, with a stop-over in Calgary, the surcharge for a dog would be $800, but only $400 for a parrot and nothing for a snake. Get it?
