Loving mom and community volunteer is being mourned Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Shannon Ferguson sums up the impact her mother Alice has had on her life with one simple phrase: “She taught me everything.” Alice Ferguson, a Cornwall businesswoman who was also a founding member of the local Women’s Entrepreneur Network and a candidate for city council in the early 2000s, passed away Oct. 29 in an Ottawa hospital. She was 64. In the spring of 2014 Alice, who was also named small business owner of the year in 1999 by the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce, underwent a successful doublelung transplant in the spring of 2014. Shannon, raised as an only-child by Alice – a single mother who operated both Alishan Transport and later Nahsila Freight Forwarding – had an incredibly close relationship with her mom. “She taught me to never back down and to always be strong,” said Shannon, who has

parlayed her inner strength into a strong writing career that she knows her mother was always proud of. “She also taught me to ask for help when I needed it. “Which really comes into play right now.” Shannon said she always knew she could count on her mom when she was growing up. But it was mom who began to rely more on Shannon when Alice’s health began to fail leading up to a life-saving double-lung transplant in May of 2014. “She was the strongest person ever,” said Shannon. “She always just did things. She did it all. She was a super caring person. Everyone else counted on her.” Alice had begun to enjoy life again, following her transplant that came as a result of a hypertension pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis that Shannon spent many an hour with her mom, essentially meant scar tissue on her lungs was and said Alice continues to stand by her side preventing them from fully functioning. But Sept. 27 a heart attack landed her back even today. “I told her I will be writing my book,” she said. in hospital, where a lung infection eventually took hold. “And I told her that if I ever have writer’s block

Alice Ferguson and her daughter Shannon. I’m going to expect her to help me.” Alice’s funeral service will be held Friday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Anglican Church, 105 Second St. W. Reception will follow at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297.

Deputy Mayor Tammy Hart said in an interview township council wants to have its feelings on the matter placed on the record - regardless of the impact of their vote. Hart is predicting South Stormont council could vote against the roundabout and she conceded in an earlier interview she has been back and forth on the issue since discussion on a roundabout began earlier this year. She now opposes its construction. “I started out…I was promoting them. I love traffic flowing. I don’t like stopping,” she said. “People can adapt and they’re fine with them.” But Hart said the residents she has heard from don’t want a roundabout. “I work for the people and if they don’t want it, then I can’t support it,” she said. “I’ve tried to sell it. (But) they don’t want it at that location.” Roundabouts are something new for area drivers. Proponents suggest they reduce collisions, minimize traffic delays and accommodate pedestrians. But critics charge they are confusing for drivers and lead to more consternation behind the wheel. Engineers have said the intersection in Long Sault has been in need of replacement for some time.

Last Wednesday night Mayor Jim Bancroft had initially ruled the presentation from delegates would be received for information purposes with no vote on the matter - presumably because a vote to formally endorse the project will come from the upper tier government at the United Counties council level.

Tugboats not strong enough to complete river work: TSB Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of tugboats that capsized on the St. Lawrence River this summer were not strong enough to do the work being completed, says the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. Stéphane Chevalier, a senior investigator with the TSB, said in an interview the national agency that works to advance marine safety has determined the tugs were ill-equipped for moving a large barge on the river in late June. “The suitability of the tugs...had not been thoroughly assessed,” he said in reading from a Marine Safety Information Letter that was written in the wake of an investigation into how the Lac Manitoba and LCM 131 capsized on the river this summer. On June 22 the Lac Manitoba was trying to position the barge on the river. The barge was being used to help with the demolition of the Seaway International Bridge.

During the work the tugboat lost power and slammed into the side of the barge. The current, which TSB officials estimate was between five and 7.4 knots on that day, quickly forced water into the tug and it capsized. Its crew escaped without loss of life. The smaller support vessel, the LCM 131, continued work at the site, trying to secure the barge via steel cable to a bridge footing, when it became swamped by the onrushing current. Its crew also escaped without loss of life. “Both tugs heeled over because of the strong current,” said Chevalier. The marine safety letter compiled by the TSB has been addressed to all the companies McKeil Marine Limited personnel carefully remove fuel from the sunken tug Lac involved in the incident that day, including Manitoba and weld lifting brackets to the hull in advance of recovery operations. “A bad deal for the province”: MPP McDonell slams Wynne’s ‘fire sale’ of Hydro One Adam Brazeau

adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Ontario’s new budget watchdog reported that the fire sale of Hydro One will not bring in the revenue optimistically forecasted by the Liberal government. “Residents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry and from across Ontario have been right all along – the unaccountable sale of Hydro One is a bad deal for the province,” said SDSG MPP Jim McDonell in a statement. “The Liberals over-estimated the revenues

from the sale and forgot to factor in the loss of future income from the utility.” The sale of Hydro One could cost the province approximately $700 million in lost revenue every year. The utility’s $27 billion debt, which the sale should have helped pay off, will instead be downloaded to consumers through everhigher electricity rates. Another planned rate increase takes effect November 1, and current forecasts expect a 41 per cent increase in hydro rates by 2019. “The province’s fiscal position will deteriorate compared to if they didn’t undertake this

sale,” Stephen LeClair, Ontario’s financial accountability officer (FAO), said on Thursday (Oct. 27) as he released his first-ever report to the legislature. “The sale of Hydro One will have an immediate improvement to the province’s balance sheet, but because of the loss of net income that results from the partial sale of Hydro One, there will be subsequent worsening of the government’s fiscal position relative to if this sale had not occurred.” McDonell is steamed, to say the least. “We learned that the Liberals refused to

disclose to the Financial Accountability Officer how they calculated the estimated proceeds of the sale,” McDonell stated. “This is a slap in the face to all Ontarians – Premier Wynne simply expects us to take her secretive and wasteful government at their word and stay silent. Ontarians, however, have expressed their disgust at this sell-off loudly and clearly. I will continue to push for a cancellation of the fire sale of Hydro One and encourage all residents to sign a petition demanding the sale be stopped.” The petition can be found at www.jimmcdonellmpp.ca/petitions.

Troy Edgell has been gone 15 years, cops still hoping for a break

Digging deep to protect Raisin River Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - In the 15 years since Troy Edgell went missing, OPP detective-inspector Peter Donnelly has spent many a restless night wondering just what happened to the Cornwall man who disappeared without a trace. Donnelly has been working the mysterious cold case involving Edgell, a man with connections to the drug element, since Cornwall police turned the matter over to the OPP in 2002. In that time, like so many other cops who work murder cases, Donnelly has risen in the middle of the night to replay parts of the case over in his head. “This is one of those cases…if I don’t do my job, then someone literally got away with murder,” said Donnelly, who maintains Edgell met a grisly fate in the late spring of 2000 and that is why he hasn’t been seen or heard from since. “Did I miss something and the guy who killed Troy Edgell get away with it?” Edgell’s case has confounded police since June 4, 2000 when he was reported missing to the Cornwall Community Police Service. Edgell had just dropped off his six-year-old daughter at his mother-in-law’s Cornwall home when he seemingly vanished into thin air. The disappearance took a nasty turn when Edgell’s burned-out 1987 Lincoln was found way out in the Lanark Highlands near Perth. How it got there, and whether Edgell was behind the wheel when it arrived in rural township is anyone’s guess. Donnelly said if the public can take anything away from the case it’s that anything is possible. “Troy had a lot of connections in Ottawa, Kingston and Brockville…he had a lot of addresses,” Donnelly said, adding Edgell, or his remains, could conceivably be anywhere. “Don’t think that you don’t have anything to offer. “I wouldn’t rule anything out.” Last year, when the OPP went public to remind residents of a $50,000 reward for information concerning Edgell’s disappearance he was described as a family man - which added to further confusion as to why he would go missing.

Troy Edgell was last seen in June 2000 when he dropped off his daughter at a family member’s house in Cornwall. It is said he doted on his children which also included a pair of sons. But his life was not without problems. The Ottawa Citizen reported last year that court documents indicate he was at one time involved in the drug trade and on two occasions in 1998 was convicted of possession and fined. “It’s a case full of twists and turns,” said Donnelly. “It’s got a lot of interesting characters… with criminal backgrounds.” As many as four investigators, including an analyst, are working on the Edgell case at any one time. Donnelly said there have been tips, to be sure, and occasions when he believed the case was on its way to being broken wide open. But more often than not tips turn out to be thin on details, and never really pan out. “This case is about people,” he said. “There’s several people that know where Troy Edgell is and what happened to him.” Donnelly and his people are hoping that one of those individuals will soon find themselves in some kind of trouble with the law. “Sometimes you hope one of these people will get caught for something and will provide information to get out of trouble,” he said. “This is one of those cases.” The Lanark County Crime Unit of the OPP are asking anyone who has information about Edgell’s disappearance to call 613-267-2626 or CrimeStoppers if they have any information on the incident.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Raisin River shoreline at Pitt Street and Tollgate Road in Cornwall got a water-friendly makeover, thanks to 60 volunteers who planted 400 trees and shrubs. Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA), RBC, Tim Hortons, and City of Cornwall staff joined students, nearby homeowners, and family members to create a riparian (shoreline) buffer zone located next to the local Tim Hortons on Oct. 25. The water’s edge plantation came out of a grant that RRCA recently received from the RBC Bluewater Project to make habitat improvements along the Raisin River shoreline within the Seaway City. “This particular area of the Raisin River is a key fish spawning and nursery area for several fish species, and unfortunately it has little to no tree cover,” said Normand Genier, RRCA’s forestry specialist. Genier suggests that shoreline homeowners along the Raisin and St. Lawrence rivers consider preserving existing trees and shrubs on their property as this vegetation

also helps to prevent erosion and flooding issues. Tim Horton staff noted that the new trees will provide a much appreciated wind break as well. Karen Douglass Cooper from the local Upper St. Lawrence River Protection Network added: “Planting trees, not only helps to protect fish and wildlife habitat, it also goes a long way to improving water quality in the Raisin River, as well as the health of the water that flows into the St. Lawrence where we access our drinking water.” RRCA also hosted its annual TD Tree Days, in partnership with TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, on Sunday (Oct. 25) at Gray’s Creek Conservation Area. “The 600 potted trees and shrubs planted at Gray’s Creek will provide very similar benefits as the Raisin River project,” said Genier. “One of the differences with the Gray’s Creek site is that there seems to be an increase in development recently near the conservation area, which may or may not have some impacts on water quality in the future. For this reason, the RRCA decided to be proactive and increase tree planting efforts along Gray’s Creek.”

EDUCATION

New employees are entering the workforce Ed Allard If you are an employer in the manufacturing or logistics sector in SD&G, you might want to take note. As of Nov. 20, a number of newly skilled, prospective employees will be looking to enter the workforce. They will be graduates of the Manufacturing Operator course at St Lawrence College, which began in late September. This eight-week course familiarizes students with the machinery, tools and equipment used in manufacturing processes. It also offers training on how to be productive in the workplace such as critical thinking, problem

solving, teamwork, conflict resolution and communications skills. Seven of those upcoming graduates are part of Service Canada’s Skills Link Program, which is being managed locally through the Eastern Ontario Training Board. That program is designed to assist unemployed people, aged 15-30, who face employment barriers when trying to enter the active workforce. Those barriers could be a lack of formal qualifications, such as a high school diploma, or a criminal record, a lack of work experience, a visible or ethnic minority, a single parent, a disadvantaged background and so forth.

Employers who hire those individuals will receive a reimbursement of $11.25 per hour for 40 hours per week for a period of 14 weeks. The aim is to assist its participants gain access to employment all the while reduce the impact for employers while the employees get settled into the job. The reimbursement occurs once the employee has completed the 14 weeks, though it is our hope that the employees will retain employment after the subsidy has been exhausted. The Training Board offers coaching assistance where necessary, to help both employee and employer get settled.

Projects – Labour Market Resources - News & Events - Articles Our mandate includes directing the workforce planning and development in support of government training programs and employment related services. This includes identifying priorities for training; making recommendations on programs and services to ensure they are accessible, effective and responsive to local needs; and working with Community Partners to resolve labour market and socio-economic development issues.

Jobs Now is another program managed by the Training Board. It is designed to assist unemployed people of any age who have selfidentified disabilities, but who are still capable of entering the workforce and completing assigned duties. Four such candidates are currently enrolled in the Manufacturing Operator course at the college. Jobs Now also reimburses employers at the rate of $11.00 per hour for up to 30 hours per week over 12 weeks, and it subsidized the cost of training for the students as well. The Training Board is also available to offer coaching assistance to both employers and employees where necessary. The Warehouse Worker Training Program at the college recently graduated eight Jobs Now participants. The course was specifically created to meet emerging employment needs generated by the growing number of warehouse distribution centres in the area. It included classes on problem solving, team building, communication and mathematics as well as work specific subjects such as forklift training, handling of dangerous goods, and occupational health and safety. These are just two recent examples of your Training Board at work, partnering with employers and training outlets to promote more active participation in the area’s workforce. If you wish more information on these programs, contact Kimberly Vass-Lihou at the Eastern Ontario Training Board, telephone 932-0210 or e-mail kimberlyvl@eotb-cfeo. on.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Stuffed animals are often used to brighten the lives of young sex abuse victims at Koala Place – but now they have a new mission. The cuddly creatures are heading to the front lines in a battle for much-needed operating funds as Koala Place grapples with drastic reduction in budget from the Department of Justice Canada Victims Fund. “In order to continue operating and providing a much needed service to children, youth and families in our community, we are working diligently to try and secure funds to sustain our centre,” said Elyse Lauzon-Alguire, Koala Place executive director. The cuts equate to about $70,000 annually, and the new funding arrangement adds up to about $80,000 a year (2013-2014 - $151,000; 2014-2015, $155,000; 2015-2016 - $80,000; and 2016-2017 - $80,000). “We are extremely grateful to receive ongoing support from Justice Canada. Koala Place would not have come so far, so quickly, to address the critical issue of child abuse if not for the support,” said Lauzon-Alguire. The centre aims to provides a safe, neutral, confidential, and child-friendly environment where children, youth, and their families who are victims or witnesses of physical and sexual abuse meet with Police Services, Children’s Aid Society of SD&G, and other community partners. Since opening in January 2014, the Cornwallbased non-profit has supported over 250 children, youth, and families. “Koala Place is here in our community to respond collectively to child abuse, and empower those who are impacted by child abuse to lead healthy and productive lives,” she said. “It is a place where children and youth complete their forensic interview, and can receive services from Victim Services and other community professionals.” By adopting ‘Kiki’ for $15, residents will be supporting this noteworthy cause. You may keep Kiki or donate him back to Koala Place as a child/youth may take home a stuffed animal after their interview. Due to the delicate and sensitive nature of Koala Place, staff kindly ask that you contact their office at 613-935-5437 or via email elauzon-alguire@koalaplace.ca in order to make arrangements to purchase your very own Kiki. Majority of council against convening by-election to fill vacant spot Todd Lihou

“If we had two or three people (to replace) then maybe a by-election,” said Hebert. “But at this point I’m not in favour of it.” Council is expected to be officially notified of its options for filling the vacant seat at its first meeting Nov. 9, with a decision to come on how it plans to act at the Nov. 23 session. Council has 60 days to decide how it wants to fill the open spot. A by-election would be convened exactly like a typical ballot, with just as many polling stations and staff on the job. Some have pegged the cost to be as much as $150,000, which soured many councillors on going that route. “I can’t see spending that kind of money on a byelection,” said Mark MacDonald. Murphy agrees.

todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – City council is leaning towards appointing an individual to fill a vacant seat at the table, as opposed to convening a by-election. Seaway News reached out to a number of councillors Friday to ask how they plan to fill Brock Frost’s seat at the table. Councillors Elaine MacDonald, Maurice Dupelle, Claude McIntosh, David Murphy, Carilyne Hebert, Mark MacDonald and Andre Rivette were all emphatic in their opposition to a by-election. “A by-election would be foolish,” said Elaine MacDonald. So with all those votes already in the bank there’s not nearly enough support to convene a by-election.

“It doesn’t make financial sense,” he said. “I can think of more effective ways to use that kind of money to help with our budget.” The sentiment appears to leave the door wide open for the return of Denis Carr to the council fold. Carr has publicly stated he would return to council if asked – and councillors appear very close to asking. “We have to bring in in someone who can hit the ground running,” said Rivette. “We don’t have a lot of time to train someone.” Rivette tried, unsuccessfully, to have council vote on the matter at its last regular meeting. There appears to be growing sentiment among councillors to vote on the issue Nov. 9, given the way the majority is thinking. “I’d like to make a decision on this as soon as possible,” said Hebert.

Not everyone, though, is against a by-election. Coun. Justin Towndale wants to see one. “If you look at provincial or federal politics, it’s the practice there when an MPP or MP resigns,” he said. “I think that the people should decide who fills the vacant seat. We are only just over a year of a four-year term. “We may also find ourselves with new candidates who were not able to run last year, or have since taken an interest in running. There has also been some talk about adding referendums on fluoride and a ward system. “I realize that there is a cost, but this is the cost of democracy. Elections cost money.” Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and Coun. Bernadette Clement told Seaway New they have not made up their minds on how to vote on the matter.

Four Colts named to All Star team challenge CORNWALL, Ontario - There will be some local flavour playing in the Eastern Canadian Jr. A All Star Challenge in Cornwall later this month. Three Cornwall Colts forwards Grant Cooper, Nick Lalonde and Tanner Spink as well as one defenceman Ross Craig have been named to the CCHL Robinson Division Team coached by Colts

bench boss Ian MacInnis. The team is also made of six players from the top ranked Carleton Place Canadians, four Kemptville 73’s, four Smiths Falls Bears and one each from the Brockville Braves and Hawkesbury Hawks. “These players earned their spots in this tournament by what they bring to the rink every night,” said MacInnis. “It’s a good event for scouts and recruiters.” Smiths Falls coach Mark Grady and Hawkesbury’s Rick Dorval have been named assistant coaches on the Robinson Division team. A total of nine teams will participate in the three day event with two teams from the CCHL, four from the OJHL (Ontario), one from the NOJHL (Northern Ontario), one from the LHJQ (Quebec) and one team from MHL (Maritimes). The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday, November 16th with the first game at 6pm at the Benson Centre. The championship game is Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm. The games will be played with a unique format of 2-20 minute periods. This format will raise the intensity of the games and enhance the scouting schedules. Daily passes/tickets will be available at the door.

Local businesspeople schooled on spotting counterfeit bills CORNWALL, Ontario - Nish Vairavanathan and his colleagues at the Bank of Canada have seen it all when it comes to counterfeit Canadian currency, including images of beloved cartoon characters and some stuff that is not suitable for work. “We’ve seen Tweety Bird, Homer Simpson and some inappropriate images,” he told about 30 people who attended a fraud seminar Monday at the Cornwall Civic Complex hosted by city police. Vairavanathan is referring to the hidden images the government places on currency, like those of former prime ministers, to ensure their validity. Counterfeiters try, but often come up short, in their attempts to recreate the hidden imagery. The Monday seminar, part of Crime Prevention Week in Ontario, gave local businesspeople some insights into how to spot counterfeit currency which, while decreasing from a high point of exchange in 2004, is still a problem at the points of sale in grocery, hardware and convenience stores in all parts

of the country. Vairavanathan told delegates that the introduction of polymer bills some five years ago helped to stem the tide of counterfeit notes in Canada. Today about 80 per cent of the bills in circulation are polymer, and chartered banks are instructed to return all paper bills to the Bank of Canada so they can be taken out of circulation. “Every day you see less and less of the paper bills,” he said. “The main reason we switched to polymer was security.” And it has paid off, pardon the pun. There are about 31 counterfeit parts per million in circulation currently, said Vairavanathan - meaning if one were to select one million currency notes in Canada, you’d find about 31 fakes. That’s down from about 34 in 2011. And Vairavanathan said the vast majority of counterfeit bills still in circulation in Canada are of the old paper variety. Toronto leads the way in terms of the number of counterfeit bills passed in Ontario - with the $20 bill being the most popular for fakers, with more than 70 per cent of the counterfeit bills in circulation being the faker. OPINION

Too much money for too little turnout on by-election Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

If Carilyne Hebert is voting against a by-election in Cornwall to fill a vacant council seat, you can pretty well consider the decision iron clad. Hebert makes no bones about her left-leaning political beliefs, and I had her tacitly penciled in as a supporter of a by-election to fill the vacancy at city hall following the resignation of Frosty the Showman. But the rookie councillor surprised the heck out of me Friday when she indicated now is not the time for another run to the polls. So did David Murphy, Maurice Dupelle, Claude McIntosh, Elaine MacDonald, Andre Rivette and Mark MacDonald. That’s seven votes against a by-election, and barring a major shift in thinking, by-election supporters can kiss that notion goodbye. Thank god - we’re about two months away from the silly season, and I don’t mean Christmas. In just a few short weeks we will jump into City Budget 2016, where we will once again hear how much money Cornwall DOESN’T have…and spending $150,000 (according to some estimates) on an election where exactly 53 people (I rounded up) will be brave enough to trek into the snow to cast a ballot for a single council seat makes no sense. I say that with all due respect to people I’ve come to admire like Todd Bennett, Mike O’Neill

and a host of others who deserved better than they got at the polls a year ago. There have been calls for such an election, to be sure. I think I’m the only local journalist with a platform who is suggesting we forgo a byelection and simply appoint (like has been done on at least three previous occasions in recent memory) the next person in line. I’m not a shallow person, but in large part this boils down to money and value. Even if it was only $100,000 I’d still say no to a by-election. There must be a list a metre long of things council could spend the money on before asking people to trek out in the snow to fill a single city council seat. Does it make me anti-democratic? Nope – I’m a realist. I’ve heard $150,000 (if that’s what the ultimate bill becomes) is simply the cost of being in a democracy. Pfft. It’s the cost of fixing a mistake…and as a guy who truthfully had no part in authoring that mistake on voting day, I say keep your hands off my tax money and do the smart thing by appointing the next person in line. Some have suggested a way to get more bang for our by-election buck is to load up the ticket with a bunch of questions for the electorate, so that we can find out what people really think of things like fluoride in our water and the size of city council…to name a few. But even that rings a little hollow. Our city

council, such as it is, was elected to make those decisions (even the difficult ones) on our behalf. If every time council was faced with a tough call and had to resort to double-checking with the voters then the slow pace of local government would be reduced to something akin to molasses and January. It doesn’t mean we should stop emailing council members or (god forbid) calling them to express our thoughts on how they should vote – but it’s their job to make decisions. We shouldn’t be making those decisions for them. We’re much better (he said with tongue in cheek) at second guessing their decisions, but that’s a column for another day. REMEMBRANCE LIGHTS? I added a little item in our Scuttlebutt section last week concerning Christmas lights

shining brightly on some properties here in Fun City on what was the last week of October. I suggested that perhaps we should keep the lights off until after Nov. 11 as a sign of solemn respect for our soldiers – those alive today, and others who made the supreme sacrifice. Let me be a little blunter this week – turn ‘em off. I’m as merry as the next guy when the holidays approach (no, really) but surely the homes that are lit up this early can spare a little bit of holiday cheer (not to mention power) and keep the Christmas decorations unplugged until Nov. 21 when the Santa Claus parade winds its way through Cornwall. It’s a small gesture, but it would mean a lot. Veterans deserve at least that much.

LETTERS Editor: There are two elephants in the room that explain why Bernadette Clement had a much easier ride in 2015 compared to 2011 Federal Election in SDSG. First elephant - Who has moved the NDP to

the centre-right , who has an abrasive style, who said one thing in English and another in French. Who is against Energy East project in Québec but when asked by the media in the west said the very opposite. Nationally the NDP lost its bid for

government because of the first elephant in the room, the leader himself. The second elephant - locally, the NDP did very poorly. The truth is in 2015 Bernadette Clement has had much easier ride than in 2011 since I was

not running as the NDP candidate. No wonder she stood aside until it was confirmed by Brian Lynch in the Seaway News that I was not running in SDSG to officialize her candidacy. Mario Leclerc, Former NDP candidate in SDSG

At Christmas, middle-class kids got to pick a gift from the Eaton’s or Simpsons-Sears Christmas catalogue, to be delivered by Santa, of course. High on Santa’s list were Maple Leafs’ and Les Canadiens’ toques and sweaters. There was one black rotary telephone in the home. Long distance calls were for special occasions. A call to Martintown or Morrisburg was long distance and could tack an extra 25 cents on the monthly bill of $2.25. Most middle-class families had party lines. At an extra 75 cents a month, private lines were considered an unnecessary luxury. Stay-at-home moms wore aprons in the kitchen and had lunch ready when the kids walked home from school at noon. Porridge was a winter breakfast staple. Country kids took lunch to a one-room school in a tin lunch pail. Fast food was a soup and sandwich gobbled up before going back to the park. Going to a restaurant was a special event. TRIVIA ANSWER Jack Roy (Nav Centre) nailed last week’s trivia. Prime Minister MacKenzie King represented Glengarry from 1945-49. He lost his Prince Albert, Sask. seat in the 1945 general election. Soon after he won a byelection in Glengarry. King was first elected to the House in 1908 but was defeated in 1911 and 1917 general elections. He was elected leader of the Liberals in 1919 and won a byelection in Prince, P.E.I. In 1921 he was elected in North York and sworn in as prime minister. He lost the seat in 1925 and another byelection was “arranged”. This time in Prince Albert. He won. King resigned as prime minister in 1948 but held the Glengarry seat for another year. He did not run in the 1949 general election. pay for a summer vacation. The less than middle-class friendly banks required the average middle-class family to surrender the first-born for a loan of more than $10. The monthly child allowance cheque, $6 per kid, was treated as manna from heaven. Only parents and the only girl in the family had their own bedroom. Kids wore hand-me-downs. Mittens were knitted and socks were mended. Moms were seamstresses who used Singer sewing machines for the family needs. Monday was wash day using a wringer washer set up in the kitchen. The clothes were put out on a line to dry. Thursday, pay day, was grocery shopping day, often done at a neighbourhood grocery store owned and operated by somebody everyone knew by name. Most times he was the butcher and his wife was the cashier. Regular customers could run an account. Families purchased potatoes in 50-pound bags that where stored in the basement or cold storage room. This was life before the rec/family room. Basements, or cellars, were just that. Vegetables grown in the family garden were taken to Murphy’s cannery. A big event for a middle-class family living in the city was a summer Sunday afternoon drive in the country, or packing up the picnic basket, with a large thermos bottle filled with Freshie or Kool-Aid, for a family outing on Sheek Island. After shelling out $1.25 for a hockey stick and tape, a parent expected junior to make it last the entire hockey season. A broken stick could mean the end of the season, which is why taking a slap shot at the neighbourhood park outdoor rink was risky business.

OPINION

Where does the middle class begin, and end? Claude McIntosh During the marathon federal election, nearly the longest in Canadian history, Justin Trudeau, Canada’s freshly-minted prime minister, did a lot of talking about “struggling” middle class families and how he wanted to help them cope. Of course, born into considerable privilege, Trudeau the Younger has no middle-class experience from which to draw. The modern-day challenge is where does today’s middle-class begin and where does it end? When Baby Boomers were growing up, in the Fifties, the middle-class was easier to define. The household income line where middle-class started and where it ended was not as wide as today when a household income of $60,000 is considered middle class, but so is a household income of $180,000. Back in the 1950s , when the first wave of Baby Boomers was growing up, it was easier to define middle-class families. Seemed everyone was in the same boat. The average middle-class family didn’t have a lot of disposable income, certainly not by today’s financial standard. Life was pretty simple. Most middle-class families had one breadwinner, the man of the household. The mill worker was paid about the same as a teacher, registered nurse, police officer or firefighter. The closest most middle-class families came to Florida in the winter was watching the Orange Bowl game on a fuzzy six-channel, 21-inch black and white television set, made in North America, and purchased at a local television/radio appliance store with $10 down and $10 a month. It was the only TV in the house. The finance company could be counted on to help

lest we forget

Three Cornwall boys died together during Battle of Hill 70 near Lens, France As is my custom on Remembrance day, its time to reflect... When searching for a story this year, we found a ‘letter home’ from Lance Corporal Rene DeRochie MM. DeRochie was born on August 4, 1897 in Glen Walter. He was one of 12 children to Norman and Elizabeth. Brothers Charles and Roderick also served in the Great War. What the letter describes is horrific and it also offers a clue. Something Rene DeRochie did so innocently, when he wrote this letter home. Trenches Clogged With Dead Bodies was the headline from the Ottawa Journal October 1, 1917. “We have been having a pretty hot time lately, I suppose you heard of the big scrap and of the Cornwall boys who were killed. It was one of the worst battles the Canadians have fought, and they have fought some hard ones, too. I pulled out pretty lucky. I was slightly wounded when I was going over the top on the morning of the attack. I got a small piece of shrapnel in the lower lip, but I didn’t stop for that. I was buried up three times with shells landing near. That was on the first day. The second day came and we were still pushing the enemy, taking pieces of trenches and using every means of killing them. The third day passed and we still had the best of them and were taking prisoners. The trenches were beginning to get clogged with dead and we would fall all over them. On the fourth day some more of our battalion came up to reinforce us. When they came I noticed Leonard Tyo, Jimmy Tyo, Lawrence Degray, Bruce Gillies and Herb Kittle, all Cornwall boys. The fight was still going strong and our lines were getting thin again. Fritz was getting wiped out. I was going up a trench that afternoon (Saturday) and I noticed Bruce Gillies, Lawrence Degray and one of the Tyo boys all lying there dead. I pulled them to one side and put the three together and covered them with my ground sheet. Later the same day I saw Herb Kittle going

Pte Michael O’Rourke (left), a member of The First Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) in Petawawa, accepted the Peace Through Dialogue Medal on behalf of all North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) soldiers on Saturday, February 9 in Munich, Germany, from NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer (right). The award was presented to NATO by the Munich Conference on Security Policy, and has been awarded each year since 2005 at the conference to honour outstanding contributions to international peace and security. NATO requested that a Canadian soldier accept the medal on its behalf. Pte O’Rourke is also a recipient of the Military Medal of Valour for braving enemy fire to assist in the treatment and evacuation of his fellow soldiers trapped in a disabled vehicle in the Panjwayi District in Afghanistan. out on a stretcher severely wounded. It made me feel as if I could have licked the whole German army.” When I searched for this Cornwall trio, gone so young, I found Lawrence DeGray and Bruce Gillies both died August 15, 1917 and their names are on the Memorial at Vimy Ridge. Vimy, as we all should know, contains the names of 11,000 Canadians who died in the area of the ridge who have no known graves. Interestingly, James ‘Jimmy” Henry Tyo who also died that day, is laid to rest at Cabaret Rouge Cemetery in Souchez, France. It is impossible to say, but if Rene DeRochie covered his three Cornwall friends together, maybe there is a chance Pvt. DeGray and Pvt. Gillies bodies were not identified, but are buried at Cabaret Rouge too, under the inscription, A Soldier of the Great War - Known unto God. As for Herb Kittle, Rene DeRochie did see a severely wounded Kittle being moved out, eventually succumbing to his wounds on August 17, 1917 at Lapugnoy Communal Clearing station. He is buried at Lapugnoy. Lance Corporal Rene DeRochie was wounded during the battle of Hill 70 and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for Bravery in the field. Lest we forget.

Even a week after the fact, Pte Michael O’Rourke admits he’s still somewhat overwhelmed. The 23-year-old member of The 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (1 RCR) in Petawawa, accepted the Peace Through Dialogue Medal on behalf of all North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) soldiers on Saturday, February 9 in Munich Germany. He was accompanied by his father, CWO Kevin Representative of NATO soldiers awarded with a medal at the Munich Security Conference Pte Michael O’Rourke, the son of a CF member was born in Lahr West Germany in 1984 while his father was posted there. He spent most of his childhood and teen years in Petawawa Ontario. He graduated high-school in 2002, and attended Algonquin College in Ottawa completing one year before joining the Military in 2004 as an infantryman. After recruit training in St Jean Quebec and Trades training in Meaford Ontario, Pte O’Rourke was posted to the First Battalion, The Royal

O’Rourke, CFB/ASU Petawawa’s most senior NCO and the man who inspired Pte O’Rourke to join the Canadian Forces. Talking about the honour last Thursday in his father’s office in Petawawa, five days after receiving a standing ovation during the 44th Munich Conference on Security Policy, the afterglow remains evident. “To represent not only my country and my Battalion, but all of NATO is very humbling,” he said in a quiet, measured voice. “It’s a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, and I felt very honoured.” Canadian Regiment, in Petawawa Ontario. He immediately began training for Roto 2, Op Archer (Afghanistan). After training events in Petawawa Ontario and Wainwright Alberta, Pte O’Rourke deployed with 1 RCR, Charles Coy. The archives at ST John's Presbyterian Church on Second St. E. in Cornwall holds a poster displayed during WWII. It lists the names of all 147 members of the congregation that who had volunteered for active service with Canada's fighting forces plus one in the USA. Designed by A.J. Casson of the Group of Seven, printed in colour, inscribed by hand, the poster is 37" high by 23"wide. No doubt it was a weekly reminder to the congregation of all those absent from the Sunday service. Inscribed–For King and Country, it includes the Canadian coat of arms and those of the Navy, Army and Air Force.

Result of over-cooking chicken...charred skin and rare meat in the thickest part of the breast. Grilling bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts feels like it should be simple enough. Even experienced grillers often try to cook them entirely over direct heat, figuring it’s just a matter of timing. At which point dripping fat causes flare-ups that engulf the breasts, charring the skin while the meat remains rare deep within. Yet perfectly grilled chicken— with crisp, browned skin and juicy, succulent meat—is relatively simple if you learn to manipulate the heat.

First, establish two temperature zones: Set one side of a gas grill to medium-high and the other to low, or build a fire on one side of a charcoal grill. (Make sure your grate is clean and oiled to prevent sticking.) Start the chicken skin-side up on the lowor no-heat side, and cover the grill. After a few minutes, when the chicken fat starts to render, flip the meat, skin-side down. Point the breasts’ thicker ends toward the hot side to help them cook evenly. Cover and grill for about 25 minutes. When the meat is done (165° at the thickest part of the breast), crisp the skin on the hot side for a minute or two, moving it as needed to avoid flare-ups. Wait until the last few minutes to brush on barbecue sauce: The sugars in the sauce will char quickly.

CAPE lands Star Trek veterans for 2016 Cornwall show Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – What do a 2001: A Space Odyssey vet, the original ‘Hot Lip’s O’Houlihan and a Star Trek minx have in common? They’ll all be in Cornwall next spring for the second coming of the Cornwall and Area Pop Event (CAPE). Star Trek fans will recognize the three previously mentioned stars and a trio of others who will help headline the event that takes place April 23 and 24 at the Benson Centre in Cornwall. Gary Lockwood - who starred in 2001: A Space Odyssey as Frank Poole (while also playing Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell on star Trek), Sally Kellerman – who played Major Margaret “Hot Lips” O’Houlihan in Robert Altman’s 1970 smash hit M*A*S*H* (and Dr. Elizabeth

Dehner on Star Trek), BarBara Luna – Lt. Marlena Moreau on Star Trek, Michael Forest – Apollo on Star Trek, Sean Kenney – Star Trek’s original Capt. Christopher Pike and Louise Sorel – Rayna Kapec on Star Trek, have confirmed their attendance at the event. “We were surprised all six of them said they could make it,” said Carol Grant, who along with fiancé Randy Sauve, is organizing the 2015 edition of Cornwall’s version of Comicon. Grant said the six Hollywood stars will be available for photographs and to meet sci-fi fans of every stripe. “They’ll be at CAPE for the full two days,” added Sauve. “They’re coming to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.” The Cornwall couple got a chance to rub shoulders with Luna at a Star Trek-type show in Ticonderoga, N.Y. where the seeds of a budding business relationship were sewn.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Cigarette smoke

Watch for red flags Roofers trying to work too fast: Ensure your roofing company will be providing you with an experienced installer and enough manpower to do the job properly (at least two or three workers). “It’s a seasonal type of business, so roofers can get very busy in the summers,” Mr. Benerowski says. “If a roofer is working too fast and he hasn’t set his pneumatic gun properly, that nail head could be driven too hard with too much pressure. You’ve cracked the shingle and now you have the potential for leakage.” Laying new shingles over old: Specify the full removal of the old shingles

Sharon Fortier

owner/operator shar’s private cleaning services

– if you don’t, the roofers may lay new ones over the old ones, which can trap moisture and lead to premature deterioration of the new surface. Not removing old nails from the roof: Leaving old nails is trapping “a bunch of needles underneath the new shingles. When you strip a roof, it has to be fully stripped.” Poor ventilation: Be sure your roofing contractor will be addressing ventilation issues and is up-to-date on current ventilation techniques and products. “If you don’t have any ventilation at all, in the summer the attic gets very hot and you end up baking your shingles and they don’t last as long.”

Shar’s Tip of the Week Smoke is composed of tiny particles of oils, tars, resins, nicotine, and water vapor floating in the air. When washing, we’re usually talking about the yellow film that builds up on surfaces where these particles come to rest. A degreaser works well for cleaning walls, ceilings etc. Add 1 part isopropyl alcohol to 5 parts window cleaner to help cut the oily film on windows or glass.

Off the Shelf: News from SD&G County Library

Susan Wallwork swallwork@sdglibrary.ca

Let’s talk November! November has it tough – it’s easily forgotten between the beauty of the changing colours in October and the preparation for the holidays in December. It’s a dreary month, one that sees shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and let’s not forget all that yard work we have to get done before the snow.

But what about the silver linings? At the Library, we see this month as the perfect time to get caught up on some of those guilty pleasures we’ve been putting off all summer. It’s time to go inside early, stay warm with a good book, or binge on a television show. Or perhaps you’re looking for something with more involvement? With Remembrance Day commemorations, our Food for Fines campaign,

and National Day of the Child celebrations, the Library provides lots of opportunities to connect with your community. During this cold and gray month, why not take advantage of our spaces as gathering places to share in some community activities with your neighbours and friends? Sure, October was exciting with the Federal election and the Jays making the playoffs - but let’s not forget the beauty and fun that can be

found in November. Look beyond the falling leaves and hardening ground, and take this opportunity to connect with each other. You may be surprised what you discover! Trunk Sale exceeds shoppers’ (and exhibitors’) expectations CORNWALL, Ontario - There’s no buyer’s remorse when the money supports a new local company, especially when the 11-year-old CEO donates portions of the sale to both the SD&G SPCA and MS Society of Cornwall & District. Through the flurry of activity at the sixth annual Trunk Sale hosted by W3G & Co. at Marlin Orchards on Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, AW Scare ‘em head honcho Alyssa Wensink’s handmade fleece monsters grabbed the attention of thousands of shoppers. “This is only my second show,” said a wideeyed Wensink, acknowledging the high level of brand exposure. The plush toys sport a cheerful smile and come with an adoption certificate, but each creation is one-of-a-kind, sketched by Wensink, and brought to life by her silent (but proud) partner, Valerie Tinkess, otherwise referred to as mom. “She has an anxiety disorder, and part of her therapy is being creative,” said Tinkess. The Avonmore residents launched AW (the CEO’s initials) Scare ‘em in spring 2015. With a modest local following, the new business is

already receiving custom orders, including monsters for raising autism awareness, and another with a cleft lip. Wensink’s inspiration stems from a young boy who made spooky creatures with socks during a stay at CHEO in Ottawa. Cornwall’s Lisa Boyle couldn’t resist picking up a monster that bears a striking resemblance to a character in her grandson’s favourite book. She described her first experience at the Trunk Sale as “a way to buy unique gifts you wouldn’t normally see and a great way to support local charities.” Each $5 admission fee at the gate went directly towards the local MS Society of Canada. In addition, vendors also donated 10 per cent of their earnings. W3G & Co. will release the final amount raised when all the proceeds and donations are We 3 Girls and Co. members Debbie Burns and Julie Hickman stand at the entrance of their tallied sometime next week. However, organizannual Trunk Sale event in support of the MS Society of Canada - Cornwall & District chapter ers agree last year’s record amount of $20,000 at Marlin Orchards & Garden Centre, east of Cornwall, Ont., on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015. has already been surpassed. one day we will run out of veterans and Silver Cross mothers to lay wreaths at cenotaphs on November 11. I dream that all our military cargo planes will shed their camouflage attire and bear Red Cross and United Nations markings during their relief missions. I dream that guns and swords and uniforms will be scattered on the ground, to be transformed into plowshares and work clothes. When armies have to conduct baked good sales and operate flea markets to finance their operations, only then will that strangest dream of Ed McCurdy come to life. In the meantime, let us hope for peace, pray for peace, work for peace and dream of peace.

From 1914 to 1918 we had the Great War, ‘The war to end all wars.’ At a horrific cost of the lives of over eleven million soldiers and eleven million civilians, we got great things such as rat-infested trench warfare, tanks that crushed hapless infantry, submarines that sank the ocean liner Lusitania and bomber aircraft that devastated cities. After that war we celebrated with an annual Armistice Day. Then the nations of the world came together to have another great war, from 1939 to 1945. Integrated into it was the Holocaust, two

atomic bombs and the redrawing of the map of Europe. Then, in 1950 a guy by the name of Ed McCurdy claimed “…last night I had the strangest dream I’ve ever dreamed before; I dreamed that all the world agreed to put an end to war.” Unfortunately the rumble of tanks and artillery surging back and forth over the 38th parallel of the Korean peninsula drowned out the song that originated with his dream. While other wars raged on and on in the Middle East, India, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Vietnam, McCurdy’s song was brought to life in over seventy-five languages by groups such as The

Two NuNs aNd a MiNi dracula Two nuns, Sister Mary Agnes and Sister Mary are traveling through Europe in their car, sightseeing in Transylvania. As they are stopped at a traffic light, out of nowhere, a small vampire jumps onto the hood of the car and hisses at them through the windshield. “Quick, quick!” shouts Sister Mary Agnes, “What should we do?” “Turn the windshield wipers on. That will get rid of the abomination,” says Sister Mary Vincent. Sister Mary Agnes switches on the wipers, which knock the mini-Dracula around. But, he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns.

“What shall I do now?” she shouts. “Try the windshield washer. I filled it with holy water before we left the Vatican,” replies Sister Mary Vincent. Sister Mary Agnes turns on the windshield washer. The vampire screams as the water burns his skin, but he hangs on and continues hissing at the nuns. “Now what?” shouts Sister Mary Agnes. “Show him your cross,” says Sister Mary Vincent. “Now you’re talking,” says Sister Mary Agnes. She then opens the window and shouts, “Get the **F$#K** off our car!”

From a caller - Flat tire ... If you find a nail or screw or something sharp in a parking lot, on the street or sidewalk or in a driveway, why not pick it up and throw it in the garbage. My tire picked one up recently and it cost me the price of a new tire. Because of the location of the puncture, they could not patch it. Didn’t see that one coming!
