Seaway News St-Jean confirmed that sentiment. “Many things have happened in the past year and find myself in a different place. Now a Florida resident, I regrettably have to decline,” said St-Jean. Carr, a city council veteran who finished 12th in the 2014 race, told journalists following council’s decision that he would take the job if it is offered to him. That officially took place Tuesday where Carr was sworn in in deputy clerk Manon Poirier’s office. Councillors were not prepared to spend money, and time, on a by-election to fill the vacancy at city hall created in the wake of Frost’s resignation. “I’ve been sitting around this table a long time…we’ve always done it this way,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. Coun. Justin Towndale was the only councillor who wanted a by-election, which comes with a $150,000 price tag. “It’s just the way I feel we should proceed. I understand the costs, but election costs money,” he said. But council also expressed concerns about trotting members of the public out to vote in a by-election in the middle of winter, and there are concerns about low turnout. “I think there’s been lots of discussion and when we look back and what the cost of a by-election would be…holding us up for a by-election and the expense at budget time is bad timing and not a good use of dollars,” said Coun. Maurice Dupelle.

Denis Carr, during a swearing-in ceremony for a previous iteration of city council. Coun. Bernadette Clement wanted a special meeting to discuss the issue, but a majority of council wanted to deal with the matter Monday night. “It’s regrettable that we want to rush this. It wouldn’t hurt to have a separate meeting to talk about this,” she said, despite supporting the motion to appoint a replacement as opposed to holding a by-election.

Dupelle suggests waterfront tank report is too ‘vague’ Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Coun. Maurice Dupelle suggested a report detailing contact between the city and owners of controversial chemical tanks on the waterfront is too “vague.” Dupelle said he plans to forward specific questions on the contact between city hall and Trillium Distribution via the mayor’s office, but he was called out by Coun. Elaine MacDonald for not making those questions

public Monday. “I don’t know why he doesn’t ask them tonight,” she said. But in an interview after Monday’s meeting Dupelle explained that questions he wants answers concern issues that were dealth with at in-camera council meetings. He added he could not ask those questions in a public forum, but still plans to follow up behind the scenes. Dupelle did not explain himself during the public portion of Monday’s meeting. Kevin Pollard of Trillium Distribution

approached the city in February 2013, and again in June of that year, concerning the tanks, said a report from economic development officer Bob Peters. On the first occasion Peters said Pollard was told about the sensitive nature of the tank project on the waterfront, but by June Trillium had signed a lease with Transport Canada for the harbour land. Peters suggested Transport Canada did not send correspondence to confirm this news and did not respond to requests from the city about construction at the site during

the year before Seaway News broke the story on the project in December 2013. “We have to be loud and proud as a city to make sure no one does this to us again,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement, who in a federal election debate with MP Guy Lauzon was accused of knowing about the tanks in advance of their reality becoming public. Lauzon, during a debate weeks ago, also suggested other city officials knew about the tank construction. Further reports on the matter are expected to come before council later.

Alan Brown named Big Brother of the Year…again CORNWALL, Ontario - It means just as much the second time, according to Alan Brown. The 50-yearold was named Big Brother of the Year (for the second time, first in 2006) at the annual BBBS of Cornwall & District banquet hosted at the Cornwall Golf & Country Club on Saturday (Nov. 7). “I thought you were only supposed to win this once,” joked Brown. “It’s been a fantastic 15 years, it goes by so fast. Sharing all these moments with the kids. You’re trying to make their day important, because they are. The agency, I can’t say enough.

You’re always there. ...I think men could volunteer a little more, eh. But I’m very proud, and happy, about the award.” Two weeks prior, Brown stood in the same hall as a member of his first Little Brother’s wedding party, with his two current Littles, Brennan BillmoreTessier, 14, and Nick Fell, 15, his wife, Diane, and her Little Sister. “That was a special moment,” said Brown. Newlywed Francois ‘Frank’ Godard, 24, added: “I wouldn’t be who I am today without Al. He always has my back.” In 2010, Brown started a new chapter with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District named Alan Brown Big Brother of the Year (for the second time) at the local non-profit’s annual banquet awards night on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015. Brown is joined by his current Littles, Nick (left) and Brennan (wearing his 2006 Big Brother of the Year jacket), and his first Little, Francois. Adam Brazeau

Brennan, after Godard aged out of the program. A few years later, another Little entered the mix, when Brennan and a young boy on the waiting list, Nick, were given the opportunity to visit DisneyLand with a program called ‘Dreams Take Flight.’ Brown wanted to make sure the boys felt comfortable with each other, so he planned a couple outings with them before the big trip. He even brought both Littles to the airport at 4 a.m. and picked them up at 12:30 in the morning the end of their amazing journey. “The three of them hit it off as if they were a family meant to be,” said Amanda Brisson, BBBS Cornwall & District executive director. Both teens agreed that having fatherly advice

readily available and someone to play ball hockey with is priceless. Brown even acquired sponsors from his workplace to help put both boys through hockey - purchasing brand new equipment and funding their registration. “These little brothers would not have had the experience of hockey if it wasn’t for their Big Brother - they even won medals,” said Brisson. Brown’s Big Brothers legacy sparked when a former colleague of his described the non-profit’s pivotal role through a turbulent time in his youth as life-changing. Son of a late hockey fanatic gets to see his beloved NHL team Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – The players on the ice were something special at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, but for Jonathan Ladouceur the real thrill was the one person in the stands that only he could see. It was his father Brad, who passed away tragically at age 38. The son of a self-proclaimed hockey nut, Jonathan has followed in his father’s footsteps and recently, through the philanthropy of his school and a local bus company, got a chance to watch his beloved Vancouver Canucks take on the Ottawa Senators via a pair of tickets he received last week at school. “I was surprised,” Jonathan, a 13-year-old Grade 8 student, understated at the time. “He was jumping for joy,” corrected his stepmother Stephanie Larochelle. Jonathan lost his father Brad Sept. 2 when the Cornwall man succumbed to a ruptured aorta suddenly at his city home. The pair could often be found, not unlike

clockwork, settling in for hockey broadcasts at every turn. “Every Saturday night it was Hockey Night in Canada,” said Jonathan. His favourite Canucks include the Sedin twins, Radim Vrbata and Ryan Miller. Larochelle said the game will be something her stepson will take with him for a lifetime. “We’re a big hockey family,” she said. “Brad loved to play hockey.” Mark Begg, general manager of Delaney Bus Lines Ltd, approached Jonathan’s school, Cornwall Collegiate, with the desire to provide an opportunity for a deserving student to receive two tickets to an upcoming Sens’ game. “We were honoured to be able to do this for him and hope that he enjoys the game,” said Begg. CCVS vice-principal Josh Harrison was pleased to see Jonathan heading to Ottawa. “This would not have been possible without the goodwill and generosity of Mark and his Delaney team,” said Harrison.

Chemo program at hospital enters stretch run CORNWALL, Ontario - With just weeks to go before its deadline of raising $400,000 to create a chemotherapy delivery program in the city, Cornwall Hospital Foundation officials are a stone’s throw away.

Erin Killoran, executive director of the foundation, said $355,000 has already been raised and there should be no issue reaching the goal before the end of the year. That means that starting next year local cancer patients who currently travel to Ottawa for treatment will be able to seek life-

saving chemotherapy closer to home. “We wanted to finish it up within a year and services would begin in 2016,” said Killoran, adding the program was announced last December. “It’s really about the donors. “This has really resonated with them. That’s where the bulk of our donations have come from.” The money will go towards outfitting the new chemotherapy department in Cornwall with infrastructure like chairs, prep areas and other equipment. As many as seven people at any one time will be able to receive chemo in Cornwall

once the program is activated next year, for a total of 275 people within a 12-month period. Killoran said the program will also serve to train about 30 hospital staff who would otherwise not been able to gain experience treating cancer patients in a chemotherapydelivery setting. Angela Preston, a senior development officer with the foundation, said the fundraising for many of these much-needed programs in Cornwall is integral to sustainability. She added that while the hospital was offered the opportunity to host the chemotherapy program, its funding envelope was not increased - so officials turned to the community. The hospital foundation also has its sights set on fundraising for a mental health facility currently under construction at its McConnell Avenue location.

Reconstruction at Agape Centre wraps up CORNWALL, Ontario - The walls at the Agape Centre are ready. So are the new parking spaces, bathrooms, windows and heating system…to name just a few. Construction for the ‘Within These Walls’ campaign at Cornwall’s only soup kitchen and thrift store - which saw the massive building on Fifth Street completely gutted was to wrap up last Friday. “All that’s left after that is some cleaning

and getting things ready,” said Alyssa Blais, Agape executive director. Ready for what, you might ask? Agape will have an invitation-only unveiling this week that will show off the $1-million project that has transformed Agape into a more modern facility. Gone are the seven leaking bathrooms, substandard boiler and asbestos. “Our building is completely redone,” said Blais, adding simple amenities that many would take for granted are seen as a luxury of sorts now. “Our bathrooms - they’re just

like regular bathrooms with no leaks.” Within These Walls was announced a year ago with the goal of raising $1 million to cover the costs of the redevelopment project that will make Agape a more welcoming place for those in need in Cornwall. “Our services are needed in the community on a long-term basis,” said Blais. “The people need a home to come to.” Blais suggested the 100 or so people who employ Agape on a regular basis to get by would be otherwise out of luck if the agency ceased to exist.

A new feature at the Agape Centre following the renovations is the creation of a socalled “Referral Room” where people who cannot afford clothing and the like will be able to select items free of charge - and in privacy. “They can get their clothing and other items with some dignity,” said Blais, adding the Referral Room is expected to be open a couple of times a week.

‘Just Breathing for Liz’ lung cancer fundraiser in Williamstown this Thursday Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Cornwall native Elizabeth Dessureault was given a grim diagnosis at the age of 26, while pregnant, she refused to be a victim. The 26-year-old is helping to change the face of lung cancer, with a little help from Piloxing with Sarah Millar. The instructor is dedicating her upcoming weekly class (a combination of pilates, boxing, and

dance) to her longtime friend. Since it’s a black light event, organizers encourage participants to wear white. The ‘Just Breathing for Liz’ fundraiser and silent auction takes place at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre in Williamstown on Thursday, November 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per person. All proceeds go to Lung Cancer Canada. “This is a chance for me to create awareness and help end the stigma,” said Dessureault. “I am so very

appreciative that Sarah has decided to run this event, and am immensely grateful for people like her who go above and beyond to help the cause.” Born and raised in Cornwall, Dessureault attended Viscount Alexander Public School and Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School. In 2013, she moved away to teach in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where she met her husband Dax, an RCMP officer. While five months pregnant, she was diagnosed with lung cancer - a crushing blow. Having never been a smoker and otherwise healthy, it came as a huge shock for her and her loved ones. Dessureault has since moved back to Ontario and is currently living in Ottawa with her husband, and their newborn son, Jack. “Come hear about Elizabeth’s journey,” said Millar. “We are inviting everyone out to this event to get the facts about lung cancer and to challenge our own lungs in a great workout. There is so much stigma around lung cancer, and that has to end - it begins by getting the awareness out.” In addition to the “Just Breathing for Liz” fundraiser that is being organized Thursday, Dessureault’s ‘Just Breathe’ bracelets continue to help create awareness and funds for lung cancer research. The $15 bracelets are available online: https:// www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ FromLizziesLungs?ref=search_shop_redirect “When I was first diagnosed, thinking of myself as a “cancer patient” was a very depressing thought, so I wanted to put a positive twist on these bracelets by adding some luck instead,” said Dessureault. “I decided not to put the traditional cancer ribbon,

Elizabeth Dessureault is pictured with her son, Jack. The Cornwall native’s battle with lung cancer has inspired a fundraising event for research and awareness in Williamstown on Nov. 12, 2015. and instead chose to put a four leaf clover since I was born on St. Patrick’s Day. I wanted to help remind all those who are fighting to stay positive, and know that with a positive attitude, an incredible medical team, groundbreaking research, and some good luck on your side, anything is possible.” For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/events/651585671648394/.

Leaking roofs have councillors demanding answers Todd Lihou CORNWALL, Ontario - Two relatively new municipal buildings with leaking roofs have city councillors demanding answers. Councillors Monday night directed administrators to prepare a report on why the roofs at both the Benson Centre and the paramedic headquarters are leaking and have been for months. “These are brand new buildings and the roofs are leaking,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. “How long is

>6423559

this going to go on? That can’t be healthy on the rest of the building.” The Benson Centre, with a cost of $34 million (including $2 million from public donations), was opened in Cornwall in 2011. The paramedic headquarters building was built in 2012 at a cost of more than $5 million. This is not the only leak issue the city has dealt with when it comes to its roster of buildings. Seaway News reported in 2012 it would cost $200,000 to fix a leaking aquatic centre roof.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Inspired by her ancestor’s experience, a Cornwall-born author’s third novel explores life in ancient lands, and the result of the French and English claims to its riches. DeBruin’s new offering, Daughter of Conflict, follows her fact-based, historical fiction series: A Walk with Mary (2012) and Shadows in the Tree (2013). The book is based on a famous attack

known as the “1704 Raid on Deerfield,” American colonists were carried off to Canada, including Sarah Allen, who was taken to the shores of the mighty St. Lawrence River. DeBruin will be led a multimedia presentation at her well-attended book launch at the Cornwall Public Library on Wednesday (Nov. 4). Daughter of Conflict is now available in select local retailers, Chapters.ca, Amazon. com, and others. For more information, visit www.jenniferdebruin.com.

“It changed my life”: Elizabeth Quenville named Big Sister of the Year Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Even when she left for university, Elizabeth Quenville’s commitment to being a mentor never wavered. The 31-year-old was named Big Sister of the Year at the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District banquet hosted at the Cornwall Golf & Country Club on Saturday (Nov. 7). “I applied to be a Big Sister when I was 18. I wanted to even before I was old enough,”

said Quenville. “When I got through the process, and was finally approved, I started to panic. I didn’t know if I had the time, or if I was going to be good at it. But when I met Austin I realized it was going to be a really great thing for him. And I realized really quickly, it was going to be great for me, too. It was my introduction to tons of volunteering jobs, and essentially led to me being a foster parent with CAS. It changed my life.” Her Little Brother was seven years old when they were first matched. Early on, she realized that the family

situation would not be easy to work with, often her Little Brother would be switching homes weekly, from mother’s to father’s, making it difficult to keep tabs on his whereabouts. In their second year, Quenville pursued her education, enrolling at Ottawa University to study business. She realized that she was the only positive influence, and stability in his life. This led her to visit the city three times a month, call each week, write letters, all the while never missing a celebration.

On his ninth birthday, she opened his first bank account. Ten years later, her Little is the father of a newborn. “I’m really grateful about my experience with the agency. It definitely gives so much back to the people who volunteer - I’ve loved my time. My Little Sister that I have now is amazing, we’re a great match. It’s also so great to be a part of Austin’s life, and hold his new baby, and to be there when it was born was a huge blessing,” said Quenville. Pizza, the great equalizer, binds us all together...in cheese Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

Every so often we pull back the curtain here at rumour control (typically to find me asleep at my desk) to put a different spin on an issue of community importance. This week the topic is a simple one, but is sure to set off a firestorm of debate, criticism and could result in blood-letting – name the best pizza in Cornwall. To be sure, this is hardly a scientific example of ranking one pie versus another. For the most part they are all amazing… probably because anyone acquainted with me knows there are two universal truths to my existence: 1)What time is lunch?, and 2) Give it to me. But despite the labels that are typically associated with Cornwall, our pizza stands alone and will likely go down as our one of most famous exports - with all due respect to Ryan Gosling. Sorry Ryan, but North End Pizzeria has made more appearances in my dining room than you probably will…dammit. In any case, our love affair with pizza, and its near-universal acclaim outside city limits knows no bounds. I have a buddy in South Carolina who had his mom smuggle a Cornwall pizza aboard a plane so they could feast in style during her visit. NHLer Paul Ranger, then a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2014, told a media scrum in the Big Smoke that “Cornwall’s pizza is the best in the world.” He enjoys it with family living in Fun City every chance he gets.

As a kid growing up I just assumed, because we are blessed with amazing pizza, that you could expect the same thing everywhere you went. Imagine my horror during a trip to Guelph (I think it was Guelph) when pizza at a distant cousin’s was found to be about four millimeters thick and 90 per cent bread. Cornwall’s homegrown pizza artists know that the devil is in the details, and if you’re going to skimp on the toppings you might as well call yourself a Communist and move to North Korea. Our pizza is red-blooded Canadiana. Just this week I asked, via an innocent Facebook post, where one could find the best slice here in the pizza capital of the world. Within minutes my Facebook page was baked in ooey, gooey submissions that put a big fat exclamation point on our love affair with homegrown zahh. The top two answers included Riverside Pizzeria and (kind of surprising given their knack for chicken) Cornwall BBQ. Louis Pizzeria, North End Pizzeria (my fave) and others also made the list. I could name them all, but you can pretty much guess that nearly every restaurant in town that serves pizza was mentioned. What is clear though (about as clear as the cholesterol that runs through the arteries of many of us) is the favourites include your prototypical ‘mom and pop’-type places, as opposed to the ‘chain-type’ operations that can be kind of formulaic in their pizza presentation. “Louis. Pep and bacon, bacon on top. Perfect

crust (usually) right amount of pepperoni covered with the best mozzarella topped with a generous amount of chopped bacon. Cooked to perfection giving the bacon a light crisp. Splash with Worcestershire...damn!!!” said Corey Stone, who obviously enjoys pizza on a cosmic level reserved for religious healers. “This is why Cornwall is so well known for great pizza because really there is more than one place!!! Louis, Riverside, Olympic, Cornwall BBQ, North End are places with good pizza (that) just have their own recipes but all good!” added Mark Vincent, a connoisseur of local pies. But my favourite response has to go to my buddy Stephanie Gibson, who has a hard time with the power of suggestion. “Seriously, I want

pizza in the worst way now,” she lamented. “I’m salivating at my desk, and I can’t concentrate on my work kind of way.” They weren’t all winners, though. One of my friends, who shall remain nameless, still harkens back to the day when McDonald’s (yup, home of the Big Mac and McNuggets) decided to diversify and serve up pizzas with the added bonus of having them atop a “special little tray.” Sigh… So, at the risk of boring you with yet another political rant (tune in next week) or an onslaught of one-sided tripe, we present you with something to chew on – quite literally. What is your favourite pizza – and why is it so special to you? See you at the dinner table.

Lags come with just about everything In nature, society and with individuals, there are all sorts of lags, i.e. the delay between when something is expected to happen and when it actually does occur. This year, there has been a delightful lag in the retreat of summer from nature’s stage. Within the last month we (my wife and I) have had three delightful overnight sojourns in the Adirondacks. During our summer-ish canoeing we enjoyed the placid waters while we explored several lakes and streams. The only thing missing was the pesky presence of blackflies and

mosquitoes. Only a few days ago (November 8) we spent several hours paddling down the St. Lawrence from Rockport to Brown’s Bay. The brisk autumn wind pushed us along faster than we could ever achieve by paddling alone, but the seasonal lag in water temperature was delightful. The crystal clear waters approached summer warmth. Unfortunately, the seasonal lag in water temperatures of large bodies of water works two ways. Anyone tempted to go boating on an unusually mild April day can find the water temperature to be at least a month chillier than one might expect. An accidental dunking could result in rapid onset of hypothermia and its fatal follow-up.

Politics are just like nature: both exhibit strong laggard tendencies. We’ve often heard, “If I’m elected….” Yeah, sure: water will soon run uphill, a cornucopia of government grants and subsidies will flutter into our outstretched palms like the leaves of autumn. Remember the British prime minister who boastfully uttered “Peace in our times” as he stepped off the plane that had just returned from a meeting in Germany. That was 1939, not 1945. There have been several generals who have promised, “The troops will be home by Christmas.” The gullible citizenry always neglect to ask, “Which Christmas?” Car warrantees come with an iron-clad lag. If your vehicle comes with a two-year, 100,000

kilometer bumper-to-bumper contract of perfection, during the 25th month or 100,100th kilometer point of ownership, your until then faultlessly performing car will exhibit all sorts of grinding, clattering, wheezing and balkiness that are not covered by that piece of paper that was given to you when you handed over the $49,999.99 wad of money to the salesman. You forgot to read that tiny, tiny, tiny print at the bottom of the contract. It explained the dealer’s escape from lag provisions. So what doesn’t come with a consequence lag? Careless driving during winter’s first snowfall; mishandling of unloaded firearms; any bravado stunt that is preceded by, “Hey! Hold my beer. Watch me do this.”

men’s Goldhamer Trophy Draw sponsored by World Financial Group. A come-from-behind win over Randy Cameron and a victory over Peter VanLoon in the second game of the 12-team final gave Bill Dickie bragging rights. Dickie’s team was made up of Roger Roy (third), Ron MacMillan (second) and Ken McLaren (lead). Finishing 1/2 point behind Dickie was Don Hogan. Other Hogan rink members were Nick Cox (third), John Irvine (second) and Bernard Breton (lead). Other top six finishers were Larry Gabri, Randy Cameron, Roger Lalonde and George Dolejsi. Thirty-four teams took part in the draw. ... Deadline to enter a team in the threeon-three Santa Street Hockey Challenge is Friday, Nov. 13. The co-ed tournament will be held Saturday, Nov. 21. This year’s event has added a school challenge division, Grades 3-6, 7-10 and 11-12 with $500 in prizes. There is no entry fee. Medals are given to all participants. Entries can be made at sshc.weebly.com. The challenge also has a Facebook page S.S.H.C. 2015. One suggestion is that it be named after former UCDSB trustee Art Buckland. Good suggestion. Buckland’s connection with local public school education goes back almost four decades. He started out with the old SD and G public board that morphed into the UCDSB. In all, Buckland spent 38 unbroken years as a public school trustee. Pierre Trudeau was prime minister when he was first elected. His tenure, believed to be the longest by any school trustee in Ontario, came to an end in the 2015 board elections. ... Kudos for city police constable Jeff Lalonde and his team for another successful (third) Crafting a Cure fundraiser for juvenile diabetes research. It was held Friday night at Agora Centre. It raised $20,000. HERE AND THERE Good for Justin Trudeau for not going with the media pick for national defence minister. Instead of naming Andrew Leslie, a retired General, he went down a couple of ranks and gave the nod to Harjit Sajjan, a decorated Lt.-Colonel who served three tours in Afghanistan. He’s a big step up from Julian Fantino. ... Best non-pick was former Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair for public safety minister. WACKY HEADLINE OF THE WEEK “Porn star sues over rear-end collision”.

A federal riding that includes Cornwall hasn’t been represented by a cabinet minister since Ed Lumley. That goes back to 1984. The door for that to change was opened by city voters on Oct. 19, but it was slammed shut by rural voters. Lumley was minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce when he was defeated by Norm Warner in the Brian Mulroney Conservative sweep of the country. It was one of several cabinet posts the former Cornwall mayor held in the Pierre Trudeau and John Turner governments. Prior to Lumley entering cabinet in 1980 as minister of trade, the riding that included Cornwall was represented in cabinet by Lionel Chevrier who served as minister of transport from 1945-1954, when he resigned his seat to become first president of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority. Today, in the wake of the Liberal landslide victory on Oct. 19, and Justin Trudeau’s record 15 female MPs in his cabinet, a case can be made that if Bernadette Clement had taken StormontDundas-South Glengarry, the riding would have had its first voice in cabinet in 30 years. Just speculation but it is not hard to believe that a female francophone, fluent in both of Canada’s official language, who holds a law degree, has municipal council experience and comes from a family in which one parent is a visibile minority, would not have been near the top of Justin Trudeau’s list for a cabinet post.

At the very least the veteran city councillor would have been given a parliamentary secretary position, which is one step from cabinet. It is something that Clement must have been thinking about while watching the swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, Nov. 4. Not that the two-time federal Liberal candidate lost by a whisker. Incumbent Guy Lauzon won by a landslide margin of some 6,640 votes. He collected 51% of votes cast. However, Clement made some hefty gains from a disastrous 2011 campaign when she barely edged out NDP flag bearer Mario Leclerc for second place. In Cornwall, where she won a handful of polls in 2011, Clement captured 75% of the 90 city polls. She had 7,520 votes to Lauzon’s 6,181. However, it was a different story in SD and G where Lauzon outpolled the Liberal challenger 12,800 to 7,600. That was the game changer. While the margin of Clement’s victory in the city, when compared to 2011, is a bit of a surprise, Lauzon’s huge edge in the rest of the riding was expected. It is a bastion of blue support that was able to withstand the Crimson Wave. For the Liberals, rural SD-SG will remain a tough nut to crack. ‘FLIPPING’ OVER HIGHLAND GAMES: Local woman moves up in national ranks CORNWALL, Ontario - France Bourget readily admits she still doesn’t know much about competing at highland games - but she’s sure of one thing...practice makes perfect. The Loch Garry woman who last year jumped with both feet (and both arms) into the medieval-like sport has climbed the ranks of Canadian athletes and now sits 21st out of about 50 people. Not bad for someone who in the summer of 2014 had just learned which end of a caber is up. “I’ve come leaps and bounds from when I started,” she said. “But I’m still new to the highland games world.” Her biggest thrill came just this past summer when, in front of her hometown fans at the Williamstown Fair, she tossed the caber for a complete flip - the first time she did so in competition.

“I think I ran up to (husband Ron Graham) and went to give him a chest bump - but then I just gave him a big hug,” she laughed. Graham has been a longtime highland games competitor, and he is currently ranked 16th in Canada. Bourget, a teacher at Iona Academy in Williamstown, said her goal has been to focus on personal bests and let the rest of the rankings fall where they may. “I want to show my students that if you work hard then you can achieve anything,” she said. “I owe a lot of credit to my step son Sam who would come out after supper and lift the caber and encourage me. I always tell him ‘There is nothing you can’t do...as long as you believe you can.’ He would echo my words and cheer me on.” The couple plans to continue to train and compete together for next year as well, including the popular Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville.

• Streaking occurs when the rubber squeegee dries, hardens and cracks. It can also be caused by tree sap, road tar and other foreign substances collected on either the glass or the blade. • Skipping occurs when the blade develops a curvature from lack of use (e.g. left in the ‘parked position’ for an extended length of time). • Wearing occurs with extensive use and is when the rubber edges are rounded instead of squared. • Splitting is caused when the sun’s ultraviolet rays penetrate the rubber squeegee, causing it to breakdown and separate from the frame. • Bent Refill Vertebra and Bent Frames cause inconsistent contact with the glass surface, creating streaking or skipping. Irwin, posthumously, was inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame on the weekend in Toronto. The Irwin family is known in Cornwall as the bedrock of local motorcycling. They own Irwin Supply in the city - a Mecca for local motorcycle riders - and Bert made a name for himself as not only a Canadian leader among enduro racers, but as a local volunteer as president of the Kiwanis Club of Cornwall, past

Ontario and Quebec and after placing well in the junior division in 1950; was top money winner as a senior in eastern Canada in 1951. In 1952, he ended the season second in Eastern Division Canadian Expert dirt track and third in Expert Road Racing, improving his position to second in 1953. While competing in 1954, Bert suffered a broken back and the medical opinion was that he would never ride again and may have to endure a permanent disability. Not to be deterred Bert was right back into racing, winning the Quebec Trials Championship in 1955 and 1956 as well as a second in the Canadian Ice Racing Championship that same year. His last National Championship came in 1978 when Bert was 45 years old.

Tom Irwin shows off his father Bert’s 1967 BSA 500 Royal Star - a touring bike. Irwin also has his dad’s racing machine, a 1957 BSA 650 Spitfire.

The six-hour charity marathon’s 2015 goal was $140,000. “It’s a little slower this year but I’m sure we’re going to come in close, because money still comes in afterwards,” said Sandy Collette, Carefor Hospice Cornwall fundraising coordinator. In 2014, the telethon raised a record-

breaking $154,000. Over 800 clients have used the palliative care facility since the first day hospice opened in 2009. Collette and her team are tasked with raising nearly $600,000 annually to help cover the operational budget. “There are no words to describe how grateful we are to the community for today’s support,” she said. “We’d never be able to make our (operational) fundraising goal if it weren’t for the telethon and the volunteer hours TVCogeco Cornwall provides for us.” To make a donation, visit the hospice website: cornwallhospice.com.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Illustrator, photographer, documentarian – and now Frank Burelle has a space to teach others his passion for all things creative. The local artist’s studio is officially open for business at the corner of Sydney and Second streets, upstairs from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce building and the license bureau - entrance located on the east side. The 43-year-old husband and father of two hosted an open house on Saturday (Nov. 7). “I’ve been at it for so long I’ve picked up many disciplines – I’m a professional photographer, illustrator, cartoonists, filmmaker,” said Burelle. The studio will start with drop-in classes for all ages and any skill level, but will expand to eight-week courses starting in January 2016. “Anything that I’m good at that people want to learn, I want to teach. All of these things now equal a career, and this place was a step in that direction. I get to teach and I don’t have to clear anything with anyone. I teach what I want, when I want,” he said. Burelle’s ‘100 Portraits Project’ made a splash this summer, while his independent films and drawings have been a staple of the area’s art scene for decades. Line of the night from Jamie Carr (not surprisingly) after his father Denis was unofficially welcomed back to city hall Monday. Jamie interupted a small media gathering with his father to announce, with his cell phone in his hand: “Hold on a second, it’s Guy St-Jean.”

Maybe the city should consider putting up traffic lights at Marleau and Campbell St. It’s a nightmare trying to access Marleau from Campbell at lunch time and at the end of the work day as many businesses in that area all finish at the same time.

Seaway News wants your opinion! Every week dedicated readers flock to the back pages of our print edition for Scuttlebutt. There’s always plenty of community gossip (on the positive side) and shout outs to local people, businesses, and charities. Submit your ‘scuttlebutt’ for consideration to adam.brazeau@tc.tc today! With a circulation of over 37,000 in Cornwall and SDG, plenty of people will be reading.

The Agape Centre’s soup kitchen needs volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. It takes a cook and a team of six volunteers to prepare and serve lunch to over 100 people a day. If you’re looking for a rewarding experience, and you’re reliable, comfortable in a kitchen setting, and like working with the public, consider applying to be a volunteer. Applications can be found online at www.agapecentre.ca.

LittLe Johnnys’ Back again!

At school, Little Johnny’s classmate tells him that most adults are hiding at least one dark secret, so it’s very easy to blackmail them by saying, “I know the whole truth.” Little Johnny decides to go home and try it out. Johnny’s mother greets him at home, and he tells her, “I know the whole truth.” His mother quickly hands him $20 and says, “Just don’t tell your father.” Quite pleased, the boy waits for his father to get home from work, and greets him with, “I know the whole truth.” The father promptly hands him $40 and says, “Please don’t say a word to your mother.” Very pleased now, the boy is on his way to school the next day when he sees the mailman at his front door. The boy greets him by saying, “I know the whole truth.” The mailman immediately drops the mail, opens his arms, and says, “Then come give your Daddy a great big hug!”
