Agape Centre needs $200k by end of the year to cover its reno bills TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Agape Centre needs $200,000 to cover the cost of its $1-million renovation project before the end of the year, its board said at a news conference Monday. Without the money, which is being requested from the public while Christmas shopping ramps up and other agencies like the United Way search for dollars, the Agape Centre will be unable to cover the last of the bills for its Within These Walls campaign which are due by the end of 2015. Board members, who invited local journalists to Agape on Monday, conceded the challenge is daunting, given the time of year and deadline. “It’s pretty tight,” conceded board president Jim Healy. “We recognize there are a lot of other organizations and a lot of valid reasons people would contribute to something.

“One of the issues is going to the public when there is some donor fatigure perhaps. We’re certainly not in a position where we’re trying to step in front of anyone else. We just have priorities. It’s a really important task for us to raise that money.” As an example the local United Way is entering the stretch run for its $710,000 campaign. “The shortfall, unfortunately, is still required,” said Healey. Board member Elaine MacDonald and Healey pointed to the Agape furnace, which is about two steps away from failure when it was replaced as part of the renovation work. Agape Centre board president Jim Healey is flanked by board members Lise Snider “Our furnace as red-tagged. We didn’t have and Paulette Hebert. the luxury of planning a campaign,” said MacDonald. The board is hoping donations from the phase of the campaign, with an invite-only “Our heating system was seriously in jeoppublic can be enough to meet the demands of reception at the newly renovated facility on ardy. City hall ready to help Syrians...if it gets asked TODD LIHOU CORNWALL, Ontario - While 36 cities across Canada have been identified to assist with resettling Syrian refugees in this country, city hall said Wednesday Cornwall still isn’t on the list. The Government of Canada on Tuesday

announced plans to resettle 25,000 refugees from the Syrian conflict with a target of 10,000 refugees arriving by the end of 2015 and the remainder arriving by the end of February 2016 Cornwall was not identified as one of the 36 cities, though municipal officials are standing by to help if asked. The city is closely monitoring the situation and staff is in regular communication with

provincial and federal representatives. “The City of Cornwall stands ready to assist should it be requested by the Government of Canada,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. Negotiations between the federal government and Nav Centre for use of that facility as an interim lodging site are still happening, said public relations officer Kevin Lajoie, but he added the City of Cornwall is not directly

involved in those talks. If people would like additional information about Syrian refugees and the process to sponsor a refugee, detailed information can be found on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/index.asp. The city indicated via press release it will provide more information in the future.

Fisher said the massive holes left on the property will be filled in after the contaminated ground is taken out. “The tanks were removed as part of the previous retail outlet decommissioning activities,” she said, adding other underground pieces that may have been left behind during previous work will be taken out too, if found. “There is the possibility that previous site infrastructure encountered during the excavation activities would also be removed.”

“We expect to be on-site for approximately three more weeks.” Lisa Chalmers, a senior environmental officer with the local MOE office, confirmed her department is aware of the work and monitoring events. In 2013, during an inspection at the site, the ministry identified potential concerns with the condition of the site and at one point there was a worry the contaminants could spread to nearby private properties, as well as city-owned land.

St. Matthew CSS Hospitality students launch catering business CORNWALL, Ontario - The Hospitality and Tourism Specialist High Skills Major Program (SHSM) at St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School, has grown again. Recently, to reach the general public and to give students realworld experience, the Hospitality and Tourism students have launched Freshca – a student run catering business that provides healthy, family style meals at a reasonable price. Students participating in the Freshca business venture benefit from hands-on learning, which helps to maintain a sustainable program. Students prepare, portion, package,

and sell delicious meals-to-go. Since the Freshca Facebook page was created, the business has become extremely successful, giving students the opportunity to cook daily to keep up with the growing number of food orders. Owen Ryan, who came to St. Matthew CSS in grade 11, believes that this program is helping him gain practical culinary arts skills and business savvy. “I prefer this cooking program over other programs I’ve participated in at other schools. I like that we get to cook every day.” Freshca also offers seasonal items, holiday

specials, and canned goods. For the upcoming holiday season, an array of baked goods and desserts will be for sale on the Freshca Facebook page. Items will feature the programs famous pumpkin rolls, sugar pies and chocolate chip cookies, in addition to some holiday favourites, like pecan pie and gingerbread cookies. All Hospitality SHSM students at St. Matthew are trained and certified in industry standard credentials, such as Safe Food Handling, Smart Serve, Customer Service, First Aid, CPR level C, and WHMIS. In addition, students participate in a Dual-Credit program through Algonquin College’s Culinary Arts Program which is delivered by a Culinary Arts Professor at St. Matthew, in the Hospitality suite. Collectively, the students learn industry standards and techniques throughout their time at St. Matthew, and upon high school graduation, are often sought after by local employers. Last year, students began participating in cooking competitions throughout Eastern Ontario. The experience has proven to be very challenging, and the quick thinking required often mimics real-world industry pressures. Cynthia Lovejoy, one of the school’s top contenders and winner of multiple competitions last year, noted the benefits of competing. “This program helped me learn about food and techniques, and then the cooking competition challenged me further. I think cooking in a competition would be a lot like the first day of work at a restaurant – I was nervous, and felt challenged, but it was very rewarding.” Students will participate in an upcoming Christmas Cookie Competition and Master Chef competition, both being held at St. Matthew Catholic Secondary School. HOME ALONE: Cornwall man loses dad and uncle in the space of three weeks TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - What would normally be a home full of the hustle and bustle of Christmas is going to be decidedly quieter this year for a young Cornwall man and his family. Colin Boisvenue, in just a matter of weeks, lost two people close to him when his father Gordie passed away tragically following a massive heart attack Oct. 28, only then to have his uncle Mike Degan succumb to muscular dystrophy just three weeks later on Nov. 18. Degan was 58, and Boisvenue’s father Gordie was just 51. “It will be pretty quiet this year, that’s for sure,” said Boisvenue, a well-mannered and articulate St. Lawrence College student of

game development. “It will be different.” No kidding. Where there was once six people that filled his Cornwall home there are now just two - Boisvenue and his mom. A couple of older brothers have since moved out of the home, and with the deaths of Mike and Gordie, things will be understandably subdued. “It’s still very surreal,” said Boisvenue. “The family is sticking close together and trying not to think about it. “We’re keeping busy.” Well, Boisvenue is keeping busier than most. On top of a busy school schedule Boisvenue has created a Go Fund Me page (gofundme.com/myarkkckto) help raise money for muscular dystrophy. He said he wanted to do something to honour his uncle’s

legacy, while also tying in the passing of his dad. Already $1,000 has been raised via online pledges and personal donations. “My dad was really the reason for starting this whole thing,” he said. “When he passed away the whole family did a fundraiser for heart and stroke. I was just looking up a couple of things and I thought I would do something for muscular dystrophy. “Mainly it’s about awareness.” Muscular dystrophy is a hereditary condition marked by progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles that has afflicted thousands of Canadians. Boisvenue said he plans to continue to collect money over the next couple of weeks, before presenting it to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

What would normally be a home full of the hustle and bustle of Christmas is going to be decidedly quieter this year for Colin Boisvenue.

from now on, thanks to a helpful referral from a neighbour. As the owners of an older home, Donald and his wife realized they could benefit from the Union Gas Home Weatherization Program, just as one of their neighbours had. “This house is over 100 years old, so it has never been fully insulated,” Donald says. “You could feel the cold from down in the basement, and the furnace would just never shut off.” So when a neighbour told him about the program that pays for energy-saving upgrades to homes like his, he took action right away. Following simple instructions on the Union Gas website, Donald contacted the authorized contractor, who guided him through the application and assessment process. “You apply fi rst, then a person comes to do an energy assessment. He did quite a few tests and saw that the place really needed insulation.” Donald was called by the contractor to schedule the work. Insulation was installed in the basement

Belt-tightening ahead for city departments following firefighter award: councillor suggesting raising taxes for property owners isn’t palatable. “I’m not in favour of doing that. “When something like this happens, the pot doesn’t grow. It realy means you have to tighten the belt in other departments.” City hall still has not officially responded to arbitrator William Kaplan’s decision, which went public when Seaway News filed a report last week. And some councillors are a little miffed that they themselves have not been provided with the arbitration award specifics. Coun. Justin Towndale said he only got a copy

of the award from Murphy Monday - but the document has been available for viewing online for nearly a week. When asked if it makes it frustrating to wait that long Towndale responded with: “Yah, it kind of does. “That’s an issue I’m not too happy with.” Towndale said he wasn’t in a position to comment on the award and is awaiting more details from administrators on its impact. “I would have preferred that we not go to arbitration,” he said. “Then we could have sat down

and worked something out on our own.” Coun. Denis Carr said Murphy’s suggestion that other city departments may have to reduce expenditures on the backs of firefighters is premature. “I don’t think that’s fair, to ask everyone else to tighten their belts,” he said. But Carr was likewise waiting until administrators prepare on report on the impact of the arbitration award before making pronouncements. The arbitration award will see a first-class firefighter earn more than $90,000 a year.

CORNWALL, Ontario - While city hall still hasn’t officially responded to a firefighter arbitration award that could add to the municipal bottom line, some city councillors are expressing disappointment. Coun. David Murphy is suggesting the firefighter arbitration award, which will see union members receive a 7.5 per cent pay hike over three years, a 24-hour shift schedule and other perks, will mean other municipal departments will have to make cuts. “We don’t have an option in this case,” he said,

Habitat building new home in Lancaster for single mother of three

home bundles just got better

SOUTH GLENGARRY - Manon Brousseau was moved to tears after learning construction on her family’s new Habitat for Humanity home gets underway in spring 2016. “She was crying with joy,” said her eight-yearold daughter, Sadalee Samson, while members of the Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley Family Services Committee met with the family on the lot for their future home on Saturday (Nov. 21). The Lancaster family of five also includes: Sadalee’s twin, Wyatt, their younger sister, fiveyear-old Cecilia, and Brousseau’s mom. “We are looking forward to partnering with Manon on this very important opportunity,” said Julie Blouin, HFHSW Family Services Committee chair. “She is a hard-working single parent with three children and is very motivated to do her 500 sweat equity hours.” Construction will begin next year on a Lancaster lot, generously donated by the Township of South Glengarry. “The organization is hoping to build new relationships within the area, to help make the dream of homeownership a reality for a well-deserving local mother,” said executive director Leigh Taggart. Since being founded in 1998, Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley has provided 11 families and 25 children with affordable housing. To get involved with the 2016 home build, contact Leigh Taggart (613) 938-0413, ext. 202, or leightaggart@habitatseawayvalley.org. Two new Handi-Transit buses making stops in Cornwall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Transit’s vehicle fleet has been enhanced with the acquisition of two new fully-accessible Handi-Transit buses. The two new buses from Creative Carriage Ltd. arrived earlier this month and the maintenance staff at Cornwall Transit has been busy preparing them for the road by adding the familiar blue and white stripes and installing fare boxes, bus radios, antennas and other equipment. The new buses have replaced two 1997 HandiTransit buses and they offer a variety of accessibility features such as yellow stanchions, wide doors and large ramps, no-skid flooring, easy-reach stop bell signals and wheelchair restraints. A typical Handi-Transit bus travels about 35,000 kilometres in a year and the service itself provides an average of 41,000 passenger trips annually. Members of the City’s Transit Committee got a first-hand look at one of the new buses following a committee meeting on Thursday and they were quite impressed with what they saw. “These new buses will serve Cornwall residents well for years to come,” said Committee Chair Ron Bonneville. The buses cost $180,500 each and Cornwall Transit is also waiting on delivery of a new

conventional bus ($482,000) in early 2016. These investments are being financed over an 8-year period and the City is using a portion of the provincial gas tax funds it receives annually to cover the cost. With these latest acquisitions, Cornwall Transit’s 24-vehicle fleet is now almost entirely fully-accessible. “This is another big step forward towards becoming fully-accessible,” said Len Tapp, Transit Division Manager. “At the same time, through these investments in transit, we are also promoting alternative forms of transportation in our community.” The bus acquisitions formed part of a joint purchase that Cornwall Transit participated in through Metrolinx, a Crown Corporation charged with administering urban transit projects in Ontario. Through this Transit Procurement Initiative (TPI), the City was able to save money by reducing unit costs through higher volume purchases and performance-based specifications, avoiding duplicate procurement costs while improving product quality. With the new acquisitions, the average age of the Cornwall Transit vehicle fleet now stands at 10 years and the goal is to reach an average age of 6-7 years. The normal life cycle of a Handi-Transit bus and a conventional bus is 8 and 18 years, respectively.

and thyme in a 2-quart saucepan. Boil until reduced to about 1/4 cup, about 12 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a small bowl, pressing on and then discarding the solids; rinse out the saucepan. Return the liquid to the saucepan and heat over low heat until hot, about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the cold butter a few pieces at a time until the sauce is creamy and emulsified. Remove from the heat. Stir in the chopped parsley, season to taste with salt and pepper, cover the pan, and keep the sauce in a warm place or transfer it to a small thermos. To poach the fish, return the poaching liquid to a simmer and then turn the heat down to medium low. Remove and discard the herb sprigs. Gently slide the salmon into the liquid, which should come at least 3/4 of the way up the sides of the steaks; add hot water if it doesn’t. Quickly ladle some of the poaching liquid over the fish, tightly cover the skillet, and cook for 1 minute. Remove the skillet from the heat and let sit, covered, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the fish registers 120°F for medium rare or 125°F for medium, 7 to 10 minutes Using a slotted spatula, transfer the salmon to a paper-towel-lined platter or plates; let rest uncovered for 5 minutes. (The salmon will continue cooking as it rests.) Discard the paper towels and serve the fish with the beurre blanc.

River Kings back to the loss column to put the River Kings on the board at 13:23 of the second. Then, with 3:17 to play in the middle frame, Nicolas Larocque-Marcoux was left unattended in front and his tap-in goal leveled the score. Moments later, Sy Nutkevitch sprung loose on a breakaway and beat Travis Fullerton to give Cornwall its first lead of the night with 2:25 to play in the second. The 3L took over in the third, however. RDL struck early in the third on a goal by Etienne Archambault , who one-timed a Chad Lacasse feed past Karvouniaris only 13 seconds in. After the Laflamme marker, Swan, with his second of the game, and Marc-Andre Tourigny added the empty-net goals in the final 67 seconds of play. River Kings defenceman Frederick Cote and Jean-Philip Chabot had a lengthy bout early in the second before Curtis Tidball and Samuel Levesque exchanged huge blows.

Cornwall outshot the 3L 41-35. Swan (first), Nutkevitch (second) and Caron were the announced stars. At Jonquiere on Friday (Nov. 27), Loic Lacasse made 27 saves to backstop the Marquis to a 5-1 victory over Cornwall. Francois Ouimet, with a shorthanded goal, scored his 4th of the season for the River Kings. Jonquiere had five

different goal scorers in the contest, played in front of 1,425 fans. The River Kings have a home-and-home series with the defending champion Thetford Assurancia next weekend. Cornwall travels to Thetford on Friday (8:30 p.m.) and the two teams meet the following night at the civic complex (Saturday, Dec. 5) at 7:30 p.m.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall River Kings fell to Riviere-du-Loup 3L 6-3 Saturday (Nov. 28) night at the civic complex in front of 962 fans. RDL scored four unanswered goals in the third period – two of them empty-netters. Cornwall had won its two previous games on home ice. Rookie Jean-Christophe Laflamme scored the game-winning goal off a wicked bounce with 6:11 to play in the third period. Laflamme, all alone in front, was at the right place at the right time to beat a helpless Pete Karvouniaris. Bryce Swan opened the scoring for Rivieredu-Loup with a shorthanded goal at 13:54 of the first. Swan one-timed a pass from 3L captain Sylvain Deschatelets past a sprawling Karvouniaris. Maxime Villemaire extended Riviere-duLoup’s lead early in the second with a breakaway goal 3:25 into the period. The speedy J.P. Caron banged in a rebound

TV TIMEOUT: Some council meetings look more like commercials Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

The televised city council meetings here in Fun City are supposed to be commercial-free. But they aren’t. At least once a month we get a presentation, or three, at city hall that is more about playing to the masses watching at home than the individuals sitting around the council table – and it has to stop. The way it looks from the media table is that anyone who wants to make a presentation at a council meeting is waved immediately through – part of a vetting process that appears eerily similar to “How much time do you need?” and “We have a place right here for you, come right in sir.” Case in point was last week’s history lesson from The Art Gallery – Cornwall. The agency, also known as TAG, didn’t ‘ask’ for anything - that will come later when the 2016 budget documents are presented. Instead they just wanted an opportunity to fill council in on the goings on of their agency…and whoever happened to be watching at home. They only reason they did that was because their friends over at Your Arts Council did something similar a few weeks ago. Why? If these‘updates’are just that, why not put it in an email and fire it off to city council for further study? It’s because the presenters love that the fact that they can provide themselves with a free plug on television – and no one, it seems, is checking

them on that. Coun. Claude McIntosh was spotted leafing through a Cornwall Living magazine during the TAG presentation (you have to admire his selection). After the presentation the deafening wall of silence from councillors put an exclamation point on things. No one was engaged. Even YAC got a few token questions before their infomercial wrapped up. But the fact that both of those agencies (and a myriad of others) who make presentations at city hall are green-lit simply because they have asked is troubling. It’s not an issue that will result in taxpayers marching in the streets, but it’s one of those thorn-in-the-side annoyances that will fester to the point of complaints. Or at the very least a rant from a newspaper hack. Surely there is a rule book in the city clerk’s department that spells out what is, and is not, allowed when it comes to a presentation from the public at a council meeting. And, likewise, I’m sure those rules are being followed (or at the very least should be). What needs to happen is the creation of an updated list of protocols that spells out exactly who, and what, should be included in a presentation to councillors. Good examples include issues of importance to the community at large…like the never-ending fluoride debate. Before council makes a decision (finally?) on whether we fluoridate our water I fully

expect proponents and critics of the practice to make presentations to council. Likewise budgetary discussions, including the annual auditor’s report, which spells out how our money is being spent. Everyone should be in on those meetings, including those tuning in from their living rooms. But updates on local festivals, arts shows and the goings of one particular agency or another is nothing more than a chance to say: “Look what we did!” live on television. Some agencies have disguised their motives by suggesting since they are partially funded with tax dollars that returning to city hall with an update on their activities is warranted – but that’s what budget time is for, when the TV cameras are safely tucked away at the Cogeco offices on Pitt Street. Some city councillors are privately grumbling

about this but no one has had the fortitude to stand up and say a word to fix the issue. I fully realize that many members of this council campaigned on a promise to increase transparency and accountability at city hall – but installing a speed ramp to the presentation table within the council chambers is not helping. I am willing to bet that if the TV cameras were not in the room, the number of unnecessary presentations at city hall would plummet. NOTE: This column should not convey any disappointment with the fine work done by our friends over at TV Cogeco. People like Bill Makinson, Chris Rohde and Gabriel Riviere-Reid (despite the fact the guy’s a vegetarian) and a small army of volunteers do a great job covering our community via news reports, community features and, yes, council meetings.

culminating creation, but the arrogance fits. Regardless, you miss the point. Yes, some tax money will be allocated to their health and wellbeing but that is a small sacrifice to show compassion and humanity to a desperate multitude. You then state that our welfare system will suffer damage just as it has in Denmark, UK, Germany and Greece. (I didn’t realise you read reports on the status of social systems for all these countries) Your Saturday nights sounds so thrilling! I’m

assuming since you do so much reading you don’t get out much. You should try it sometime. Buy a calendar…. Your eyes aren’t fooling you. It actually says 2015 on the cover! Editor: RE: letter to the Editor from A.S. Fox. Congrats! You managed to make several racist and unfounded comments in such a short letter. First, you stated that there are experts who claim that up to 20% of refugees are linked to ISIS. Who are these experts? You conveniently didn’t identify your source. You also seem to want to equate ourselves to what some states in the US are doing – yet you are Canadian. You then interchange

your wording from refugee to invader. You made another statement about refugees being unscreened. Not one article I have read has indicated that refugees would not be screened. A Global News article indicates they actually go through 5 screening steps. You then suggest all Syrians females are polygamous and with multiple children. Another biased statement without merit. Plus, you make is seem as if its inconvenient women have children. I doubt you were God’s

THIS AND THAT (2) Other than firefighters, is there another profession that works 24-hour shifts (seven days a month)? The key word here is“works” as in awake doing the job. It is a unique situation unavailable to other professions and gives new meaning to condensed work schedules. Heck, you could hold down a part-time job, or run a business on the side. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR A case could be made that the Millennial generation has been shortchanged when it comes to role models. Talk about playing a hunch ... and hitting the jackpot. It started when St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies on patrol decided to check on a driver parked in a car lot along Route 11 just south of Massena early one evening last week. Just one of those routine traffic checks. But this one quickly became anything but routine. A few hours later when the cops finished unloading and weighing several bags of cocaine tucked away in a secret compartment built into the vehicle, they had one of the biggest drug busts ever made in Northern New York State. The haul weighed in at 47 kilos. A total value of $10 million ($13.4M Canadian). It could be one of the biggest single drug busts in the state’s recent history. To put that in perspective, the total amount of cocaine seized over the last 10 years in SD and G and Cornwall probably hasn’t added up to $10 million. It was like hitting the winning lottery numbers. While talking to the driver, the sheriff’s deputies felt something was not right. So on a hunch they brought in a canine patrol that was in the area. As Sheriff Kevin Wells put it, seconds out of the patrol car “the dog went crazy.” “I always try to impress on our officers that it is not about the ticket but it is about the stop,” Sheriff Wells told the Watertown Times. Cornwall Deputy Police Chief Danny Aikman concurs with the sheriff’s take on the value of checking out something suspicious.

“A traffic ticket (stop) can lead to criminal charges,” said Aikman. In this case, major undercover drug operations covering months have turned up far less. Wells pointed out the officers were not acting on a tip. The 25-year-old driver was not known to police. Based on sentences handed out for some of the 33 persons charged in last year’s major undercover drug operation in St. Lawrence County, the 25-year-old man faces some serious federal prison time. Guilty pleas resulted in some stiff sentences. A Massena man received 10 years. A Canton man was hit with 14 years. A man from New York City is facing 25 years to life when he is sentenced next month. New York State takes the illegal drug trade far more seriously than it is taken on this side of the border. St. Lawrence County law enforcement agencies have expressed alarm over the quantity of heroin and cocaine coming into their jurisdiction from New York City and Boston. They aren’t afraid to say the region has a serious drug problem. Whereas, many police officials on this side of the border are in denial. On this side of the border, a hop, skip and jump away from St. Lawrence County, law enforcement treats cigarette smuggling as a bigger problem. TRIVIA ANSWER City council went to the bank on April 9, 1956 and borrowed $1.73 million for construction of a new water filtration plant. The cost included purchase of the Bronson farm. At the time, it was the most expensive taxpayer-funded project in Cornwall’s history.

news

I’m game, as long as it’s somewhere interesting Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com Page 97 of The Adirondack Atlas is titled “The Most Powerful Park in the World”. When I read the material under that attention-grabbing title, I was transported back to the most interesting place I have ever over-nighted in the Adirondacks. It wasn’t in a tent on Mountain Pond, nor in the back of a pickup truck on Lake Kushaqua, nor in a Cobble Mountain cabin and not in a VW Westfalia near Rainbow Lake. Nor was it in the mountain-top fire tower. It was in one of the ten

Atlas missile silos that were once operated throughout the Adirondacks by the 556th Strategic Missile Squadron. A farmer’s Harvestore silo towers above ground, a landmark that stands high above the fields of corn. In contrast these military silos didn’t house grain: they hid a 6,300 mile range missile that could incinerate any target in western Russia. Their protective silos were 50ft. in diameter and 165ft. deep – but completely underground, clad in steel and concrete. When the iron mine at Lyon Mountain was closed, the out-of-work miners built these shelters for the nuclear-armed 125-ton second-

strike missiles. The crew quarters and command centre were also underground, designed to withstand a nuclear blast. It was in one of those eerie rooms I spent a night. Fortunately, the threat of the Cold War was over, the nightmarish philosophy of “mutually assured destruction” was abandoned, the Berlin Wall had fallen. The site’s Atlas missiles had been deactivated and turned into pots, pans, powerboats and plowshares. There was no cry of a loon, whispering of wind in pines or lapping of waves to lull me to sleep. There was only the sinister whisper of the sophisticated air-circulation system. No

moonlight nor glow of a rising sun slipped through the windows, as the sleeping quarters had no windows. Whenever a tent was my shelter, I was intimate with the sounds and smells of my surroundings, completely vulnerable to any prowler, whether it be a raccoon, skunk or bear. Here, in my burrow of concrete and steel, I was as secure as if I was in a maximum-security prison. I select my places to sleep in the same way as I try to choose where I travel, what mode of transportation I use and where I dine out. I’d rather have ones that will be memorable, ones that will offer learning experiences.

A TRUE STORY? (Hardly - just an amusing yuk!) Airborne approximately thirty minutes on an outbound evening Aer Lingus flight from Dublin, the lead flight attendant for the cabin crew in her lovely Irish brogue nervously made the following painful announcement... “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m so very sorry but it appears that there has been a terrible mix-up -- one minute prior to take-off by our airport catering service... I don’t know how this has happened but we have 103 passengers on board and, unfortunately, only 40 dinner meals... I truly apologize for this mistake and inconvenience.” When passengers’ muttering had died down, she continued.., “Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of our 5 hour flight.” Her next announcement came four hours later... “If anyone would like to change their minds, we still have 40 dinners available.” GOD BLESS THE IRISH!!!!

The truck will be used for the White Swan Linen commercial laundry program delivery services. Michael Lloyd a long time Alexandria businessman who passed away in 2008 helped start ARC Industries in Alexandria, a organization that provides employment programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, similar to White Swan Linen commercial laundry service. The new $128,000 truck was donated by Debra Baker’s uncle Lloyd Barbara and Aunt Marie Barbara, in memory of Debra’s father Michael Barbara, who was a strong supporter of Community Living Glengarry and its programs. From left are Maurice Dupelle (White Swan Linen manager), on behalf of the donors family — Aline Barbara, (wife of Michael Barbara), her son David Barbara, and her daughter Debra Baker, with Danielle Duranceau (Community Living Glengarry executive director), and CLG board chair Daniel Giroux.
