Multi-rez properties in Cornwall are paying big bucks Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Owners of some multiresidential buildings in Cornwall pay more than double the tax rate that a typical residential property in Cornwall grapples with. Cornwall finance manager Maureen Adams told city councillors Wednesday morning there can be a significant pressure on owners of multiresidential properties with more than seven units because provincial legislation mandates a much higher rate of taxation. For example the Cotton Mill Lofts in Cornwall are taxed as residential properties and per unit Tours TRAVEL QUEST Escorted Space is limited BOOK early and SAVE!

taxes average about $2,504 a year. But over at the new Knox City Centre, which is taxed as a multiresidential property, the per unit tax bill skyrockets to an average of nearly $5,900. “They’re probably somewhat comparable… in value,” said Adams, who added many property owners are making the decision to convert their buildings to condos, to avoid the multi-residential tax class. “This is one of the biggest drivers for those decisions. “If you take your multi-rez building and convert it to a condo, your assessment might go up a little bit. But overall the taxes that property will generate go down.” Adams said complaints have been filed. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy suggested a new tax class could be created to mitigate some

of these pressures, but such a move is not likely to happen overnight. “It can’t be done in this budget,” he said, adding things could begin to change in time for the 2017 budget process. City bean counters have gone as far as running the numbers for all 14,370 residential properties in Cornwall to determine what the average tax hike will be for their properties. Such an exercise suggests taxes are set to go up by 1.73 per Bob Pelda, president of RMP Construction, left, and Mayor Leslie cent, or $38, across the city. Critics have attacked the city in the past for O’Shaughnessy cut the ribbon at the only using a randomized list of 500 properties to Cotton Mills. determine the average tax hike/decrease, which single-family detached homes (10,122) and 9,800 they felt did not give a true representation of the of those are assessed between $100,000 and pressures faced by homeowners. agreed Thursday to spend the money on a consultant who will determine the feasibility of adding another weekend service to the system. Half of the money would be covered by the tax base, while the balance would come from gas tax transfer payments. The study will also look at long-term goals of the service and areas where other enhancements/efficiencies can be found. While the approval of the move requires the assent of all of council when the budget is passed, there is support in some quarters already for Sunday service. “We need Sunday service. To me it’s not a ‘want,’” said Coun. Mark MacDonald. “I know that it’s not in the budget. In my opinion I would like

to see it at least included as an item we can discuss.” Critics of the transit service have demanded Sunday service by way of public comments and petitions. But it won’t come cheap. The early estimates suggest as much as $400,000, maybe more, would have to be added to the municipal bottom line to transport the hundreds of people who are demanding the service. With that in mind transit manager Len Tapp has argued against Sunday service for now, until other problems are mitigated. “We need more buses, so we have to solve that problem first,” he said. “There’s mechanics. There’s a whole bunch of things behind it.”

What’s to be done with the Domtar stacks? City hall wants to know CORNWALL, Ontario – A city councillor wants administrators to find out what the plan is for the iconic Domtar stacks that continue to stand post on the former mill property, nearly 10 years after the facility closed. Coun. Denis Carr wondered aloud Monday night what is to become of the stacks that were rumoured at one point to be demoed in short order, but still stand to this day. He wants

administrators to find out. Paris Holdings, the owners of the mill property, have been tight-lipped about their plans for the stacks and city hall has not been informed of what will take place in the future. “The short answer is no, we have had no specific conversations in that regard,” said city infrastructure manager John St. Marseille. Just what could happen with the entire property is likewise up for debate. Paris Holdings officials have been studying the level of land contamination at the property

Coun. Bernadette Clement said in many respects the city’s hands are tied. “Obviously the Domtar lands are held by the private sector so there’s not much we can do,” she said. “But we have to make sure as a city we communicate with the owners of that land that it is important to the community and appropriate development must occur there. “It’s important for us as a city that we keep on top of this. “Ask us for help too. LANDFILL ON BORROWED TIME

TRANSIT CAMERAS ON THE WAY

With the future of The Art Gallery Cornwall debated this week some former board members have a simple message: let it die and create something else. The Art Gallery (TAG) held a meeting to solicit opinions from members and the public at large about its future, but Eric Covington - one of many who spent time on the executive before resigning - said it’s time to move on. “It may be time to let it die and create TAG 2,” he said. “They may be trying to resuscitate a dead horse.” Covington qualified his remarks by pointing out he has no idea the financial status of TAG, though he presumes it isn’t good.

Cornwall’s landfill only has about 15 years left before it is full. City hall is considering spending $160,000, spread over two years, to study just how the city will proceed after the aged landfill on Cornwall Centre Road can take no more. The study is expected to focus on identifying and evaluating options available for future waste disposal including expansion, mining and other possibilities. “One of the things this study could be used for is to look at incineration, as an alterative,” said Coun. Elaine MacDonald.

Cameras are expected to be installed on Cornwall Transit buses to maintain a record of interactions between riders and drivers. City council is expected to approve a $25,000 request in the 2016 budget, which will be combined with $50,000 that has already been set aside, to cover the purchase and installation of the cameras. “The transit industry recommends cameras. It eliminates the he-said, she-said thing,” transit manager Len Tapp told city councillors at a budget meeting Thursday. Tapp added the material captured by the cameras would have to be kept.

A North Glengarry man is facing several drug-related charges after a traffic stop in Alexandria on Tuesday (Feb. 2). SD&G OPP say officers pulled over a vehicle on Main Street around 10 p.m. and found an undisclosed amount of marijuana, methamphetamine, and hydromorphone. The 43-year-old driver, Michel Piette, has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, and four counts of failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance. The accused was held for a bail hearing at a later date in a Cornwall courthouse.

SD&G OPP are investigating what they call a suspicious death in a home in the community of South Dundas, near Iroquois. Police say they were called to the home at about 10:40 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 6), where they found the body of 67-year-old Edward Robert Allen, of South Dundas. A post mortem examination is scheduled for Monday at the Ottawa Hospital?. The SD&G OPP Crime Unit, under the ?direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), are continuing the investigation. SD&G OPP Const. Joel Doiron told Seaway News police are asking for public assistance in its investigation into the suspicious death. If you have any information on this case, contact SD&G OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

SUNDAY SERVICE STUDY

TAX HIKE PEGGED AT 1.9% City hall is pegging a tax increase at about 1.9 per cent for a typical residential property in Cornwall – about $42 on the average bill. The city’s budget committee, in record time, wrapped up deliberations on the 2016 document Thursday. And while all of council will be required to give the budget its assent at an upcoming special meeting, there appear to be enough votes around the table to go with document as presented. Budget committee chair Bernadette Clement suggested the work will now focus on feedback from the community. “It’s a palatable budget,” she said. “The big challenge will be next year.”

Some city councillors want to add $70,000 to the 2016 budget to pay for a study of Sunday service for Cornwall Transit. Councillors on the city budget committee agreed Thursday to spend the money on a consultant who will determine the feasibility of adding another weekend service to the system.

‘SUSPICIOUS DEATH’

NEWS

South Glengarry firefighter tells wife ‘Alex was watching’ Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – How South Glengarry firefighter Randy Robertson survived a harrowing rollover accident on Highway 401 Saturday is anyone’s guess – except his. “He told me our nephew Alexander was watching over him,” said Robertson’s wife Debbie Julien on Sunday, barely 24 hours after Robertson was nearly killed while responding in a fire truck to another accident on the busy provincial thoroughfare. Alexander is better known to readers as Alex ‘The Warrior’ Lazore – a little cancer fighter who sadly succumbed to the disease a week before Christmas. “He and Randy were very, very close,” said Julien. “How he survived that mess…I don’t know.” A mess indeed. The tanker truck Robertson was driving rolled multiple times on a snowy Saturday morning. He was left partially hanging from the vehicle which appears nearly destroyed

in images shared with this newspaper. His injuries read like a laundry list of life-threatening ailments: a collapsed lung, broken shoulder, broken collar bone, broken vertebrae, internal bleeding and a deep gash on his head. A chest tube has also been inserted. Doctors, who have informed Julien that her husband is expected to recover, are expected to make a decision on surgery concerning his badly injured back. “I’m just thankful he’s alive,” said Julien. “They’re keeping him very medicated due to the pain in the ribs and the collarbone. They will be installing a morphine pump this afternoon. “He’s laying flat on his back and cannot be moved. He’s had nothing to eat since yesterday morning because we’re still not sure if they’re going to do surgery.” The rallying cry has already been sounded, and messages of support are flowing in for a man who just recently was named the top firefighter in South Glengarry.

“Station 4 has been very supportive they’ve been calling and texting and sending lots of love and prayers,” said Julien, who added Robertson is conscious, and in pain. “He’s got a long road ahead of him. “Mostly he’s been saying ‘I’m in pain’ and ‘Where’s the doctor?’” Poor weather conditions have been attributed to the crash, at around 8 a.m., that severely injured Robertson. “The road conditions were very slippery… causing the fire truck tanker from Station 4 in Lancaster to roll over while responding to an accident along Highway 401,” said Fire Chief Vic Leroux. “The firefighter involved in the accident was operating the tanker and was the only occupant of the vehicle.” Robertson was initially transported to the Cornwall Community Hospital. Doctors had planned to send him by air to Ottawa, but poor weather conditions scuttled that idea and instead he was driven. He is now in the trauma unit at the

Former aldmerman Ray Lalonde to be immortalized at city park Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - When the two Lalonde brothers who went into public life look around the city park that one day soon will carry the name of their late father Ray, one thing comes to mind. “It’s like dad is back with us,’ said Todd Lalonde.

Ray Lalonde, an alderman in Cornwall from 1979 to 1994 and community volunteer who passed away nearly five years ago at age 73, will be immortalized by having a park on Blossom Drive renamed in his honour. While the move has not yet been officially approved by city council, all indications are the municipal rubber stamp will follow a report on the matter which is expected in

think it is well deserved. “When I would campaign with my dad you would see all these people who would come up to him and liked him. “Everyone liked Ray.” Blossom Park is located on Blossom Drive in the city’s east end. It includes play structures for children. Ray’s family also includes his wife Merita and sons Rick and Kevin Lalonde.

The people of Cornwall have once again demonstrated exceptional generosity and commitment to the community. From November 7 to December 31, 2015, Your Credit Union held a fundraising campaign in aid of the Cornwall Community Hospital’s new Addiction and Mental Health Centre. Your Credit Union pledged to match every dollar donated to their year-end appeal, up to $10,000. As usual, the citizens of Cornwall went far beyond expectations donating $41,891 which produced a total of over $51,000 with the donation from Your Credit Union.

$51,000 Raised for CCH Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Your Credit Union would like to thank everyone who donated to this very important project. Your Credit Union has been a part of the Cornwall Community for over 65 years and we are committed to reinvesting in the community to improve the quality of life for all. We proudly serve Cornwall from our branches on Second St. West and in the Cornwall Community Hospital and shortly, from our new branch at 1315 Second St. East. Thank you Cornwall for your support.

Motorist crashes into SD&G OPP cruiser LANCASTER, Ontario - No one was seriously injured after a driver collided with a police cruiser, less than an hour after a South Glengarry firefighter was seriously hurt on the same stretch of highway. As SD&G OPP officers re-routed traffic at the Lancaster exit of Highway 401 at about 8:40 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 6), a seconed vehicle lost control and slammed into an unattended police car being used to direct traffic. The driver, a 31-year-old man from Mirabel, Que., has been charged with several Highway Traffic Act offences, including driving without insurance, driving without a licence, driving without a valid permit, and failing to notify a change of address. A female passenger suffered minor injuries in the vehicle that lost control, police said. The highway has since reopened.

Cornwall man captures first place at St. Albert’s poutine contest Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Timothy Woods took one look at the competition Saturday and knew he had them beat. “I was into my second one, and they were still on their first,” he said. The second “one” he is talking about is a poutine, and the Cornwall man polished off three in just 10 minutes to win the first ever St. Albert’s Cheese Poutine Eating Contest. For those keeping track at home Woods downed about three pounds of cheesy, gravyladen French fries, besting the second-place finisher by about a quarter of a pound. Despite what seemed like a close finish Woods said in an interview after the event Timothy Woods looks on with quiet confidence on his way to first place. things weren’t in doubt. “I slowed down the pace,” he said. “I took it Photo: Facebook easy as soon as I got to the third one…I could was two-and-a-half through.” have eaten more. “Most of them got down their first one and I Woods is not a competitive eater by any

stretch, but he knows what he likes and poutine is definitely on the list. Despite what amounted to a fairly hefty midafternoon snack (the contest took place at 2:30 p.m.) he still had room for a hearty supper. “We have chicken and potatoes tonight.” For his efforts Woods was presented with a $250 gift card from St. Albert’s Cheese

- arguably the most popular curd destination in this part of the country. But even Woods, who can now add “champion eater” to his resume couldn’t use the entire card- he split it with a buddy. “$250 is a lot of cheese”...said the guy who just ate three poutines.

Cornwall’s application at Kraft Hockeyville has been accepted Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A local writer with a passion for hockey is hoping our love for the game will be recognized on a national level. Ashley March has submitted a successful application to Kraft Hockeyville to have the Seaway City recognized as a top-tier hockey community by the popular wintertime contest. Winners of Kraft Hockeyville receive $100,000 in arena upgrades and also host an NHL exhibition game.

March has focused on the Ed Lumley Arena for those upgrades. She points to some specific areas of concern at the arena that is the home of the Cornwall Colts and River Kings and was built 40 years ago. “While the NHL ice surface is absolutely perfect, the rest of the building isn’t on par with modern arenas,” she said. “We have trouble attracting entertainment as well and that might be one of the issues why. Cornwall isn’t a rich town and I know the money to be won would help tremendously.

“There’s no reason, except money, why we can’t the nicest looking...arena. Cornwall really felt a loss when the OHL left and if we want them back, this definitely has to be done.” March, the author of marchhockey.com - a great hockey resource, said Cornwall has always been a pillar of the sport. “Cornwall has never stopped being a hockey town even when our much loved teams relocate,” she said. “Everyone still talks about Memorial Cup wins from the 70s and 80s to this very day. And if you’re looking for passion, you

have to look no further then last year when the fans collected money to pay the River Kings players to help keep them in town. What other city has done that?” March 5 Kraft Hockeyville will select the top 10 communities that will take part in the voting round for the contest. “I’m confident we can make the top 10. We’ve done it before in 2007 and this is the same competition,” said March. A social media campaign has been launched concering the application.

2016 NORTH AMERICAN CAR OF THE YEAR

CORNWALL, Ontario - The first time Mike Krushelnyski skated the Ed Lumley Arena was against the Cornwall Royals in the late 1970s. Fast forward a few decades and four Stanley Cup wins, and he can still be found chasing the puck as local sports fans cheer. Krushelnyski and a squad of fellow hockey legends returned to the Cornwall Civic Complex for the annual NHL Alumni Tour charity game on Saturday night (Feb. 6). “It’s about the old cliche of having fun being around the guys, playing against great people for great causes,” said Krushelnyski. “And it’s also for the player who doesn’t skate that well scoring a goal on us or when someone strips us of the puck - it’s about seeing their smile.”

The former NHLers defeated the Cornwall Community Police Service ëAll Star Enforcersí 11-9 in support of Special Olympics Ontario and the Law Enforcement Torch Run. “It was another fun game, they always make us work,” said Krushelnyski. “And the police force does a great job raising the money and filling the stands.” The benefit match also featured a skills competition and plenty of on-ice practical jokes. “The fans are used of the NHL, and then they see us....and, yeah, we’re a lot slower. But some of these guys can still rifle the puck just as hard,” Krushelnyski told Seaway News.

Canned food structures help Agape fight hunger Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Do you have what it takes to design and build a structure made of nothing more than canned food? The Agape Centre’s first ‘Canstruction’ competition is coming to the Benson Centre on Friday, April 15. ìWeíre really excited to bring this international event to Cornwall,” said Kendra Smith, volunteer coordinator of the Agape Centre and member of the Canstruction Cornwall planning committee. The unique fundraiser challenges teams to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food and non-perishable food items. At the close of the competition all of the food is donated to the local food bank and soup kitchen. “It’s a fun way to raise some food for the shelves at the Agape Centre, at a time of year when typ-

ically donations run low,” said Smith. Teams will begin building their sculptures on April 15 and will work through the night to have their structures ñ which can be as large as 10 ft x 10 ft x 10 ft ñ ready for judging Saturday morning. The colossal art pieces will be on public display for two weeks, beginning 8:00 a.m. on April 16 through to April 30. “If you can dream up a design, make a plan, fundraise cans, and assemble a group for the build, the organizing committee will make sure you have an engineer to mentor you,” said Smith. Eight groups have already committed to the challenge: Bourgon Construction Inc., St. Lawrence College, Lowe Gravelle & Associates/EFI, City of Cornwall, Professional Engineers Ontario, Rotary Interact Club, Agape Centre, and WSP/ Architecture49 Inc. “Our mission is to help the community of Cornwall in any way we can. We strongly agree that

hunger is a pain no one should feel,î says Thomas Devaney, St. Lawrence College student with the CCSF team (Cornwall Community Support Force), a group of five from the Police Foundations program. ìWe’re quite excited about this event.” Teams will also contend for a title in five categories: Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Jurors Favorite, and Peopleís Choice. The local winners will move on to the international competition. “We hope everyone will visit the Benson Centre to see all the cansculptures and vote for their favor- For the first time in Cornwall, teams of ite to receive the Peopleís Choice Award,î said engineers, builders, designers, students Alyssa Blais, executive director of the Agape and and supporters, plus more than 8,000 member of the Canstruction Cornwall planning cans of food, will converge at the Benson committee. ì Centre this spring for Canstruction. Exploring the connection between the heart and love can share. Some may wonder just how the emotions of love became tied up in the shape of a heart, even though it’s widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs affections. In ancient times, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emotions. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it became the cornerstone of human feelings.

like symbolic hearts, that was the color chosen. Red has long been associated with passion, so it made sense to depict the heart in a bright red hue. Many other theories have been offered regarding the symbolic heart and its representation of love. While there’s no definitive correlation between love and hearts, the heart has become an accepted symbol of the emotion and the season of romance.

Love is considered to be one of the most profound and strongest human emotions, therefore it was reasoned that the feeling must emanate from the heart. Surprisingly, the heart has not always been the only organ associated with love. During the Middle Ages, the heart was deemed a useless organ. Followers of the Greek physician Galen theorized that the liver actually was the seat of the soul and love. The first depictions of a symbolic heart date back to the 11th century, when the heart was drawn to resemble a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upward. The scalloped heart that is more familiar today first arose in the early 14th century. Around the same time, the heart was depicted with the point facing downward and the indentation at the base. Naturally, as time passed and more was learned about human anatomy, it became obvious that the brain was the seat of all emotion and thought processes. However, as the brain was something intangible in a living body in ancient times, and the beating heart could be much more readily monitored — with a pulse rate speeding up when a person is excited or aroused — it’s easy to see how the link between the heart and love has endured. Although the human heart is not bright red

Hearts and Valentine’s Day are forever intertwined. One of the most recognizable symbols of love is the modest heart, and hearts adorn candy boxes and cookies while paper hearts are pinned to doors or windows as a symbol of Valentine’s Day. Young valentines may share candy hearts printed with silly sentiments. A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomical heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of affection a person

Bowl for Kids’ Sake - a striking success Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The annual Tim Hortons’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake has raised $68,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District. Organizers are celebrating the 38th edition’s striking success despite being a few pins shy of this year’s $70,000 goal. “It might be close, but it’s a great total - which is outstanding considering we had less teams than last year,” BBBS past president Bill Makinson told Seaway News on Sunday (Feb. 7). “We are extremely happy.” Makinson expects to hit the fundraising target with last-minute pledges.

“We always have some donations that come in afterwards,” he said. The non-profit’s signature event took place on Saturday and Sunday at Olympia Bowl and Nativity Lanes in Cornwall, and the Chesterville Bowling Lanes in North Dundas. Tim Hortons’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake drew 171 teams, down from 2015’s nearly 200. Community members, service clubs, businesses, and of course Bigs and Littles, cheered and heckled their fellow teammates in a non-competitive battle for bragging rights. More than 100 Tim Hortons staff members also participated in the event. TC Media is proud to be one of the sponsors of Tim Hortons’ Bowl for Kids’ Sake.

OPINION

It’s time for some answers on those iconic stacks Todd Lihou

todd.lihou@tc.tc

With demolition work for the high-level Seaway International Bridge seemingly entering the home stretch public attention should shift to another demo project that appears in some circles to be lagging. We’re referring, of course, to the two sentinels that continue to stand post within the former Domtar paper mill land – the iconic smoke stacks. The stacks, which for decades belched into the Cornwall environment signaling what many feel was a more prosperous time for rank-and-file blue-collar workers, are the two highest profile remnants of that time. It appears likely we will have them for some time – unfortunately. Paris Holdings, the owners of the mill property and its infrastructure, have yet to let the public in on their plans for the stacks and this has to change. I challenge Paris Holdings to give us some idea, even if it’s just a snippet, of what their plans are for the stacks. Way back in 2008, before my buddy Kevin Lajoie got his cushy city job, he was a reporter in Cornwall and penned a summertime story about how the smoke stacks were set to be blown up in a spectacular public display. As city editor of that publication at the time I made a big deal out of it on the front page. Tickets were to be sold to the public and a lucky pair would win the right to push the

buttons that would set off explosives and reduce the stacks to rubble. Money would be raised for charity and the plan at the time, according to Gerry Rose of Demo Plus, would have seen this spectacle take place in October of that year. “It’s going to happen,” Rose told Lajoie, who was a reporter at the Standard-Freeholder at the time. “There’s an awful lot of interest in it.” No kidding, Gerry. Here we are nearly eight (!) years later, and those smoke stacks are still sitting there. If you had told me back then that the smoke stacks would have outlived the aforementioned bridge I would have said you were nuts – but here we are. There could be a good reason for this…or a really bad one. No one, except those at Paris Holdings/Demo Plus seems to know. And they aren’t talking. “The short answer is no, we have had no specific conversations in that regard,” city infrastructure manager John St. Marseille told city councillors at a Monday council meeting. Perhaps it’s because no one has asked the question, which is why Coun. Denis Carr wants administrators to reach out to Paris Holdings/ Demo Plus and find out. Of course they don’t have to say a damn thing. The Domtar property is most definitely private land. There is no legal obligation for owners to let us in on their plans for the future – but there is a moral one. City council has asked for updates, twice a year, on what is taking place on the former mill

property. As Coun. Bernadette Clement puts it, Paris Holdings/Demo Plus owe us that much at least. “We have to make sure as a city we communicate with the owners of that land that it is important to the community and appropriate development must occur there,” she said Monday. “It’s important for us as a city that we keep on top of this.” So, with that, I fully expect Gerry Rose and others working on the rehabilitation of the Domtar lands to lift the veil, even if only slightly, on some of the work they have planned. The longer we go without knowing, the more concerned we become.

NO BLACK-AND-WHITE AFFAIR Coun. Elaine MacDonald, clearly, is no football fan. Following an impassioned speech from Coun. Claude McIntosh on Bob Turner’s impact on the city – which was part of a larger discussion on Black History Month – MacDonald rose to let us know how far we’ve come as a society. “Did we not see the first black quarterback perform in a Super Bowl?” she wondered aloud. Um, no, we didn’t. According to NBC sports Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair and Doug Williams came before Cam Newton on the weekend. Just sayin’.

us have heard, condominiums and parkland. The Seaway Bridge demolition and new bridge has given the entire area a facelift. I just think the smoke stack towers should be preserved as the beacons to the new life that will spring around them. The entrance way to a new beginning. The path back to the once busy canal that thankfully still remains on the property. The stacks that many a man and woman passed daily for work, still remains a vivid memory in their lives. Structurally, if the main stacks are sound, a small green space and dedication should identify the area. Restoring the stack to its days of glory

when large letters emblazoned Howard Smith and later Domtar down its spine, could be upgraded by splashing the old name of that area SMITHVILLE onto its side today creating an instant historical link to the past. Our city is unique in many ways. By keeping some things around for years to come, our children and their children will be able to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors and not have to sit down one day and wonder what was or why did they (we) get rid of more history. Thom Racine, Cornwall

LETTERS

Editor: The once proud paper mill is a part of our history and heritage. As the walls came tumbling down and the scrap metal from Domtar’s skeletal remains was turned into cash, the smoke stacks remained. Are they still here because of environmental concerns, or is it because the owners of the property believe in preserving history. How can a couple of tapered concrete and steel towers be considered eye sores by some, but are so valued to others including me? Answer; They retain a status because they are symbols of our city. They identify what once was, like the old

post office, the Canal, Capitol Theatre, Si Miller arena and most recently the bridge. Sadly, they are all gone, but the stacks remain and we should try and keep them. It’s tough to stand in judgment of those responsible for the demolition of some of our heritage buildings; especially when they believed what they were doing was just, all in the name of progress. Truth be told, times were different too. We all know, it is very easy to be a Monday morning quarterback, even when these iconic buildings were destroyed years ago. I have no idea what is in store for the property that once was Domtar. I have heard what most of

Shades of a case back in the Sixties when city police seized a 15-minute pornographic movie reel - what was called a ‘blue’ movie at the time from a city resident. The out-of-town magistrate wanted to view the film, in his chambers, before he sentenced the perpetrator. A detective involved in the case said they played it so many times for his honour they nearly wore out the evidence. The convicted man received a suspended sentence. TRIVIA ANSWER The 100-bed St. Lawrence Sanatorium in Glen Walter opened in 1937 to treat patients with tuberculosis. It closed in the 1970s. A reader tells the story that he spent eight months in the San after an x-ray showed a spot on his lung. It was diagnosed as tuberculosis. Turned out, after eight months of being confined to the San, the medical staff discovered he didn’t have tuberculosis. Dr. Zbigniew Gorecki, who for many years served as the San’s superintendent, was sentenced to life in prison on April 16, 1973 for murdering his estranged wife, TRIVIA In 1873, Cornwall resident Thomas Murphy, armed with a horse and carriage, established this first-of-its kind business. The horse and carriage part of the business has been replaced by horsepower. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR The CJSS-TV dance party carried live on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. from the Water Street studio (it was a former garage) that also housed the radio station. Don McGowan, who started his television career at the station (along with Barry Dunsmore of ABC fame) before moving on and making it big at CFCF in Montreal, told the story of how the station didn’t have a portable camera to cover the annual Santa Claus parade. So, the parade route was changed

OPINION so it would passed in front of the station. The stationary floor camera was gently moved to the front yard. The parade was held up while McGowan interviewed Santa. ... The station’s sports broadcaster was Carl Fisher, one of the best in the business. When the station was scuttled, Fisher made the shortlist for Hockey Night in Canada’s hot stove host. He remained in Cornwall, launching a successful insurance business. ... Reader recalls WSTS in Massena which had a great Saturday afternoon rock and roll show that was popular among Cornwall teens. Cornwall native Ron Roberts along with Bill Kingsley and Dick Cook were Saturday afternoon DJs. The station went on the air in 1958 with a limited 100 watts. It went off the air each day at sunset. In 1965 it became WYBG. The station closed last June. SPORTS STUFF The Florida Panthers, a team that has struggled the last few years to put more than 10,000 fans in its arena, has become a big attraction this season. It sold out (20,000-plus) Saturday’s game against PIttsburgh. ... The lateseason jump in River Kings attendance might be too late to save the semi-pro hockey club from an end-of-franchise financial bath. ... ... Most lopsided junior hockey fight this scribbler saw while covering the Royals was a 1989-90 season mismatch at the LumDome (first game of the season) between Royals rookie J.P. Latreille and veteran Niagara Falls Thunder forward Keith Primeau. The 17-year-old Latreille, a high Royals’ draft pick, was knocked out with one Primeau punch. He was taken from the rink by ambulance and spent a couple of days in hospital. He was never the same. In 26 games he had one assist. He was released to the Smiths Falls Bears.

With apologies to the late, great Bing Crosby, now that he has a lot of idle time on his hands these days Willie Wise might want to rewrite the renowned crooner’s mega hit “Brother, Can You Spare Me a Dime?” Willie’s version might be “Bro, Can Ya Spare Me a Few Million?” As if he hasn’t enough headaches of migraine proportion dealing with a 19-year prison sentence at age 65, the U.S. justice system has thrown him for another loop. He has been ordered to repay $100 million (US) to the 700 folks he ripped off with his $130-million Ponzi scheme that had him cruising the fast lane as if it was his money. By all accounts, Willie blew all the cash he swindled from folks. Assets that included a Caribbean island home, a Challenger jet, several luxury vehicles and boats and his main residence in Raleigh, N.C. were seized by the feds. Oh yes. Also standing in line with its hand out is the dreaded Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It says Willie owes the federal treasury $1.045 million in unpaid taxes. Good luck to the IRS! If there is any good news in this for Willie it is that he got a jump on the sentence when he turned himself in back in 2009 after hiding out in a Toronto apartment, and that federal prosecutors backed off on the 100-year sentence they originally sought, no doubt in exchange for his co-operation. Translated: ratting out his partner who pleaded not guilty. He has a few more years to log but the day could come, within the next five or six years, that Willie will be sent back to Canada to finish his

sentence. That usually means checking in for a cup of coffee at a halfway house. In what can be described as a symbolic gesture, District Judge Edward Chen last week ordered Wise to fork over at least $25 every three months from his paltry prison pay to help reduce the restitution and tax bills. That won’t leave much to spend at the slammer canteen. For sure, it nixes his credit rating. He can’t afford a tin cup. The Cornwall native, who has a law degree, served a term on city council, tried to establish a real estate empire and ended up with majority control of the Cornwall Royals Hockey Club (his nickname among Ontario Hockey League managers was Willie Dumb), might want to put in for overtime in the prison laundry. FROM THE ARCHIVES Fearing that the August 1972 edition of Playboy Magazine would damage the moral fibre of the city, Cornwall Police Department took the unusual step of banning the sale of the magazine within city limits. Detective Inspector Percy Riviere announced that any city vendor selling the August edition, which carried recreated sexually explicit scenes from Martin Scorseso’s Hollywood movie Boxcar Bertha, starring Barbara Hershey and David Carradine, would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Riviere, after viewing the magazine, called the scenes obscene. This, of course, made the August edition a much sought-after black market item in the city. I’m willing to bet the magazine (aka evidence) made the rounds in the station. The movie, which had a Restricted rating (18 and over), was based on the true-life experience of Depression-era criminal Bertha Thompson.

Professional Care is Best For Your Hair

Say I DO!!

Once you have become engaged, nothing makes it more official than posting your engagement picture and announcement of your upcoming nuptials in your local newspaper. This is when becoming engaged and planning a wedding really starts to sink in. Telephone or e-mail your newspaper to get the information that is required by them. Normally a newspaper will have a form for you to fill out with the appropriate information that they need to complete an engagement announcement. Hopefully by now you have had an engagement picture taken to include with your engagement announcement. Engagement pictures can be as formal or informal as you want them to be. The style of picture that you choose to have taken

depends on your personalities and your lifestyle. Whether you choose to have your engagement photograph taken at a department store photography centre or an independent photography studio is up to you and your overall wedding budget. Be sure to ask the newspaper staff what their photograph requirements are. You’ll need to verify what the size requirement is (4x6 or 5x7) and if they will keep or return the photograph. Be sure to order extra pictures from your photographer for engagement announcement submissions. There are no rules to how many newspapers to announce your engagement in. The average number is two and this is based on one announcement in the bride’s hometown and one announcement in the groom’s hometown.

Mistakes to avoid

6599177

There is no doubt about it: organizing a wedding is a big job. To help make sure your special day goes off without a hitch, be sure to keep in mind these common mistakes and avoid them at all costs. Mistake 1: not having a budget Budget planning is an important part of any wedding. Having a budget means that you decide in advance where all your hardearned money is going. This lets you avoid overspending or spending your money on the wrong things.

Mistake 3: extending last-minute invitations Draw up your guest list carefully and then stick to it. Don’t add names along the way to please those who want to invite themselves or interfere with your planning. Be prepared to respond gently but firmly to that single

friend of yours who told you she’d be coming unaccompanied but who now would love to bring her last-minute love interest. Mistake 4: spending exorbitantly — or stingily A wedding doesn’t have to be spectacular and grandiose to be memorable. Some expen ses can be reduced. Put your friends to work on decorating, for example, and spend a bit more on your dream dress. But be careful not to go to extremes; you can be reasonable without being cheap. Your wedding is likely going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and too much money-pinching could result in a plain or boring day.

Good tips to keep in mind

18 - Thursday, February 11, 2016 - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

Mistake 2: group shopping Shopping for a bridal gown with friends and family members is not necessarily a good idea. The reason is very simple: everyone has their own opinion, even if they don’t openly discuss their tastes and favourite colours. The danger here is in being influenced to choose a gown that somebody else has been dreaming about rather than the one you’ve always wanted. It is preferable to go shopping with just one other person, someone who you can count on to be honest and objective.

• Avoid giving important jobs to the parents of the bride and groom — unless they really want to be involved that way. Instead, let them enjoy being with the guests. • If you intend to create a gift list, be sure to put it on the Internet so that it will be easily accessible to everyone. • If small children will be at the reception, plan to have a space available where they can play and a quiet room where they can sleep. • Take photographs of your hair and makeup

test runs so you can choose the perfect combination. Prepare a make-up kit for any touch-up jobs on your big day. • Leave a guest book at the entrance of the reception hall. It’s a great souvenir to keep, along with your photo album. • Leave a disposable camera on every table so that guests can record magical moments during the reception. • Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality.

Bridal Dreams Glittering wedding bands What kind of wedding band are you going with good reason. So relax and take the time to establish your priorities; doing so will to choose when the time comes? Will allow you to make a good choice. you give free rein to your creative First of all, be sure to dreams or will you consider your own opt for something personal needs and more practical and tastes. Close your restrained? Whatever eyes and visualize your the case, the ring seals wedding day. What do you see your union on the big day, on your finger? One or two overlaid so be very careful about what rings? White gold or yellow? An you choose. A lot of importance is attached to this little piece of jewellery, and embedded single clear diamond or a cluster

of emeralds? There are lots of questions to think about before you get down to some serious shopping. Keep in mind that the trend in engagement rings and wedding bands for 2014 is towards diamonds and geometric shapes, such as squares and hexagons. What’s more, the 2014 ring is definitely on the large side — dainty diamond solitaires, move over! Because of the impressive size of the central stone, it is also referred to as a cushion-

cut ring. If you love a clunky cocktail ring, then you will love one of these; will not go unnoticed on your

i t finger. Diamond pave wedding bands are also very much in evidence this year, featuring single or double halos. With this style, either the ring or the central diamond is highlighted by a tangle of small diamonds dancing around it. Wow!

What information should a wedding invitation include? Announcing your upcoming marriage to your family and friends is always exciting. But this excitement can sometimes result in a few details being forgotten when the time comes to write the invitations. Whether you opt for elegant type and formal language or a simple, no-nonsense format, the invitation ought to include the following information: • first and last names of the bride and groom • wedding date • time of the ceremony • where the ceremony is to take place • contact information for the bride and groom

Reception invitation If some guests are to be invited to a separate ception after the (and more exclusive) re ceremony, then the following information should be included on a separate card: • time of reception • site of reception • financial contribution for the meal (if applicable) • dress code or theme • details about the event, if desired (i.e., menu choices, open bar or cash bar) • a list of hotels, bed & breakfasts, and other accommodations in the area

Some tips to make your wedding shine

ums) also swarm in certain areas during certain seasons. Consider renting pest control tanks to alleviate the problem or including bug repellent in guests’ gift bags. Check Your Credit Take advantage of the high cost of weddings and sign up for a credit card with a rewards program. Whether it gives you airline miles or great shopping deals, consolidating all weddingrelated purchases to this card will help you accumulate thousands of rewards points (which could be used for your honeymoon). Pay It Forward Let one vendor lead you to another. Your wedding photographer can tell you which florist’s blooms really pop, and your reception manager should know which band packs the dance floor. Lighten Your List The easiest way to trim your wedding budget? Cut your guest list. Remember, half of your wedding expenses go to wining and dining

b e f o r e the big day. Invitations for summer weddings should be sent even earlier to ensure that people can plan their vacations accordingly. • It is acceptable to invite some people just to the ceremony or just to the reception. • Before choosing your final invitation design and reply cards, find out about standard postal sizes and weights from the post office.

your guests. If it’s costing you $100 per person, eliminating one table of 10 can save you $1,000. Ask and You Might Receive Request an extra hour for cocktails or for your band to throw in that Frank Sinatra sound-alike before you sign on the dotted line. Most vendors would rather secure the reservation than nickeland-dime you early on and turn you off. Later on, though, they may have less of a motive to meet you halfway. Get Organizationally Focused In a three-ring binder, compile all your correspondences with vendors, notes you make during meetings, and photos or tear sheets from magazines you want vendors to see. Set up a special email address dedicated to your wedding, and store important vendor numbers in your cell phone. Tend to Your Bar Typically, you need one bartender per 50

guests to keep the line at a minimum. But if you’re serving a signature cocktail that cannot be made ahead of time (or in large quantities), consider adding an extra server designated to this task. Leave Some Room in Your Wallet Your wedding budget should follow this formula: 48 to 50 percent of total budget to reception; 8 to 10 percent for flowers; 8 to 10 percent for attire; 8 to 10 percent for entertainment/ music; 10 to 12 percent for photo/video; 2 to 3 percent for invites; 2 to 3 percent for gifts; and 8 percent for miscellaneous items like a wedding coordinator. It’s essential to allocate an extra 5 to 10 percent of your money for surprise expenses like printing extra invites because of mistakes, additional tailoring needs, umbrellas for a rainy day, and ribbons for the wedding programs. Go to TheKnot.com/budgeter for an interactive budget allows you to add your own items.

Guests Come First Get a grip on the approximate number of guests you’ll invite before settling on a venue. This will ensure there’s ample space for your crew. As a rule of thumb, allow for 25 to 30 square feet per guest. That may seem like a lot, but it’s not if you count the space you’ll need for the tables, bustling waiters, the band, and the dance floor. Investigate Wedding Blackout Dates Know ahead of time if your wedding date falls on the same day as a trade conference, charity walk, or other local event that could affect traffic and hotel room availability. Listen to Mother Nature Heed the weather and other potential annoyances. The five virtues of the ideal maid of honour

Being a maid or matron of honour involves a lot more than just wearing a beautiful dress. Her role is also to personally ensure that everything goes perfectly for the bride, before, during, and after her big day. Do you have what it takes to fulfill this role? 1. Organization: One of the maid of honour’s responsibilities is to organize the bachelorette party and accompany the bride to a variety of gatherings and fittings. In other words, your good time-management skills are essential. 2. Honesty: The future bride is hesitating between two dresses and one of them is completely wrong for her. Now’s the time to be honest. You were chosen by the bride for this role because your opinion is important to her. Of course, you don’t impose your ideas, you just make tactful suggestions. 3. Devotion: On the big day, your job is to ensure

that the bride’s dress, particularly the train, is always arranged properly and that her hair is perfect for the photos. You accomplish all the tasks related to your role without complaint; you’re not just a guest, but one of the people in charge of the entire event. 4. Patience: Even if your friend is turning into a bridezilla (a bride-to-be whose wedding planning behaviour can be regarded as obsessive or intolerably demanding), you still need to be patient and give moral support to the bride throughout the process. 5. Modesty: Be content to take the backseat on the wedding day; after all, it’s not you who is getting married. Think only of the bride while you’re wearing that formal dress and uncomfortable shoes that you’ll never wear again. Oh, what wouldn’t a maid of honour do to please the bride-to-be!

Aspiring Cornwall Olympian triggers crowdfunding campaign Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mary Patrick, a 17-yearold sharp-shooter, launched a crowdfunding campaign to help her reach the podium at the 2020 Olympics. Supported by her stepfather Scott Gardiner, Patrick started the online fundraising campaign on ‘Makeachamp’ (a crowdfunding site for competitive sports) with a $16,500 goal. “I’m an aspiring Olympian ñ and I’m trying to find funding in different manners, because it’s pretty difficult when you’re a shooter,”said Patrick. “I want people to see that marksmanship is a sport

and guns aren’t always dangerous, they can be safe if they’re used in the right manner.” The 60-day campaign closes on April 3. “We weren’t able to use a majority of the crowdfunding sites, because there was an issue with weapons,” said Gardiner. The CCVS student added, “It’s one of the biggest challenges: people’s views towards weapons.” In summer 2015, Patrick competed in Bisley, England, and earned the highest Canadian score in the under-25 division at a National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom event. On her wish list: rifles, rifle accessories, and safety equipment. The total fundraising goal does not include transportation, accommodations,

competition entry fees, and ammunition. “We’re trying to get her her own rifles. This way she won’t have to rely on people to lend them, it will make trips a little easier, and then she can get a feel for them,” said Gardiner. Patrick will have to wait until she’s 18 to actually purchase the firearms. The teen markswoman will begin studying mechanical engineering at Carleton University in 2017. Patrick is also a cadet warrant officer at 2403 Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. For more information, visit www.facebook. com/shooting4gold and makeachamp.com/ marypatrick.

SHOOTING FOR GOLD: Cornwall’s Marian ‘Mary’ Patrick, 17, launched a crowd funding campaign to help purchase rifles and marksmanship equipment as she shoots her way to the top of her sport.

From a reader: I would like to thank a very kind gentleman in Ingleside, St. Lawrence Street, who kindly returned my garbage can lid after it blew off during a snow and wind storm. Never thought I’d see it again, thank you very much for your trouble.

From a reader: When are people going to put down their cell phones? You think it won’t happen to you, but it only takes a blink of an eye and you’re in an accident. Hope you don’t get hurt. And some people should re-read the rules of the road: you may turn left from a one-way road to a one-way road on a red light after coming to a complete stop and making sure the way is clear.

Cornwallites love poutines more than your average foodie. This was proven amidst a buffet Obviously Elaine MacDonald is not a football of curds, gravy and fresh-cut fries at the first St. Albert’s Cheese Poutine Eating Contest. fan. COngrats, Timothy Woods.

Helping hospital foundation

34 - Thursday, February 11, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation extends special thanks to Barry Cox and Brian Leitner for their creative contribution to CCH’s Chemotherapy Unit fundraising. Barry and Brian, seen with hospital foundation director Erin Killoran, took bolts and washers from the original Seaway International Bridge in Cornwall, and turned them into commemorative works of art. So far, the unique pieces have raised $3,500 to help bring chemotherapy to Cornwall. “It’s been such a positive experience for us to give back to the community in our own way,” said Barry. “Brian and I would also like to thank Davar Bronzing, Cornwall Glass and Demo Plus for being great partners and contributing towards this feel-good project.”
