Cornwall is warming up for Agape’s wintry fundraiser Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Bundle up and brave the weather for a fundraising event with plenty of sole. City of Cornwall officials and staff are inviting you to join them as they march towards the Agape Centre’s fundraising goal of $25,000 at the annual ‘Coldest Night of the Year Walk’ on Saturday (Feb. 20). “Homelessness and hunger are things we may not think touch us or the people around us,” said Coun. Carilyne Hebert, who also sits on the Agape board. “It’s usually hidden. So we really wouldn’t know if our neighbours or co-workers are skipping meals to feed their children. So please walk for those around us silently going hungry and cold.”
The event is aiming to help participants understand the reality of surviving on the streets during a cold Canadian winter. “While we’re commiserating together about walking in the cold, it makes us think about people right here in our community who are hungry, homeless, in need, or forgotten,”said Kendra Smith, volunteer coordinator at Agape. It’s the centre’s third year hosting the outdoor fundraiser which will also be taking place in over 60 cities across the country. Already, about 90 walkers and 21 teams have registered to participate. “There’s still time to join us and help us make our $25,000 goal,” said Smith. The Cornwall walk begins and ends at the Agape Centre (40 Fifth Street West). In bright blue
toques, participants will walk a 2km, 5km or 10km route. Toasty drinks will be waiting at the rest stop along the way as hundreds step up to help eradicate poverty. Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., a warm chili dinner will be served to all walkers and volunteers. “City of Cornwall employees give back to the community in a variety of ways throughout the year,” said Kevin Lajoie, captain of the city’s Coldest Night team. “This is another way to support the great community we call home. It’s a fun and exciting event to benefit an organization that is doing important work in our city. We’re looking forward to it!“ For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ events/434114560119976/ and agapecentre.ca. Coldest Night of the Year Walk schedule: 4 p.m. - Registration opens; 5 p.m. - Opening ceremonies 5:15 p.m. - Walk begins (all distances); 6 p.m. Registration closes; 8 p.m. - Route closes.

NEWSY LALONDE: Provincial plaque to be installed at civic complex TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc
A rather dapper-looking Newsy Lalonde. place. Representatives from the heritage trust have not yet returned phone calls seeking comment. It is hoped the plaque will go up in May. Lalonde was arguably the first Montreal NHL superstar, along with the likes of Georges Vezina. Lalonde scored 124 NHL goals for the Canadiens, beginning in the 1917-1918 season, including a remarkable 37 in 1919-1920 in just 23 games. It is said that he even scored the first goal in Canadiens’ history in 1910. In the 1919 playoffs he scored 17 goals in just 10 games. He was also a lacrosse star. The driveway leading from Water Street to the civic complex entrance was christened Newsy Lalonde Way in 2010.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Decades have passed since Edouard ‘Newsy’ Lalonde captured the attention of hockey fans across the country - and more work is finally getting done to recognize his greatness. The Ontario Heritage Trust is installing a plaque on the Cornwall Civic Complex property, adjacent to Newsy Lalonde Way that connects the facility to Water Street, marking his connection to the birth of the NHL and exploits as a member of The Flying Frenchmen. Similar plaques are going up in Belleville and Sault Ste. Marie - the homes of Jack Laviolette and Didier “Cannonball” Pitre, the other men who comprised the Frenchmen. “Better late than never - he’s starting to get some recognition for his accomplishments,” said Richard Quintal, a grandson of Lalonde who lives in Montreal. “It would have been nice in his lifetime, but at least there’s still some family that remember him. “It’s nice that the original Flying Frenchmen are getting some sort of recognition.” The commemoration, part of the Ontario Heritage Trust program, will include a large blue and gold plaque - one of more than 1,250 across the province that have been erected over the years. Former MPP Jim Brownell, who sits as a member of the heritage trust, was pleased to see a local hero honoured. “For such a long time nothing was done for Newsy Lalonde in Cornwall,” said Brownell. “It was quite exciting when I read in the package that Newsy Lalonde would be receiving plaque.” It’s still unclear when the unveiling will take

The leader of St. Lawrence College is calling on Queen’s Park to spend more money helping low-income students. Glenn Vollebregt, president and CEO of the college which includes a Cornwall campus, said Wednesday increasing financial support because the situation is becoming dire for lowincome families, which make uo the bulk of applications. “In this economy, it’s essential that all qualified students have access to post-secondary education,” he said. “The government should make enhanced support for low-income students a priority in its upcoming budget.” More than 50 per cent of college applicants have household incomes of less than $60,000.
‘Be careful what you wish for’ warn the cast and crew of the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s Into the Woods. With opening night only days away, Cornwall Square shoppers were treated to an impromptu performance by SVTC on Saturday (Feb. 13). “We’re giving the community a taste of the show,” said director Lacie Petrynka. The unmistakable music of Stephen Sondheim provides the soundtrack, as familiar fairy tale characters of our youth, go Into the Woods, in the musical production. The players themselves are a great mix of veterans and newcomers, including Michael Kiera Coulter DeWolfe, as the Narrator; Corey Disotell and Jenna Clute, as the Baker and his wife; Jill LeClair, R-O student in T.O. Kiera Coulter’s ideas could help shape the as Cinderella; Anna Villeneuve, as Little Red future of school breakfast programs across the Riding Hood, Cullen McNaughton as Jack (as in province. SD&G OPP arrested a 27-year-old Scarborough man in connection with a gas theft from an ONroute service station along Highway 401. Police received a complaint at 4:19 a.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 9) of a man speeding off from the South Dundas service station without paying for gas and food items. SD&G OPP intercepted the vehicle and arrested the driver, Riaz Ijaz. The man was also wanted for an alleged gasand-dash which happened on County Road 43 in North Grenville on February 8, 2015. He faces two counts of theft under $5,000. The accused was held for a bail hearing at a Cornwall courthouse.
We should know by the spring how feasible it will be to create an arts centre in Cornwall. City officials say a study, by +VG Architects and Sierra Planning Management, is examining the feasibility of such a plan, expected to be completed before summer. “This is a very important exercise and we want the community to help shape this study,” said James Fawthrop, the city’s parks and rec manager. With that in mind an online survey is being rolled out, seeking input from residents. In addition, members of the public are invited to attend an open house Feb. 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cornwall Civic Complex (Salon B).
Man caught stealing A 19-year-old Cornwall man was arrested after several vehicles were ransacked on Munro Avenue. Cornwall police received a complaint that a man was spotted going through parked cars early Tuesday morning (Feb. 9). Shortly after, the accused, was located in the area, taken into custody, and found to be in the possession of “a quantity of pills.” Ryan Mitchell was charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of a controlled substance. He was released to appear in a Cornwall court on March 15.

Butterfly Child soars into Cornwall on wings of steel...and rubber Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – If you’ve never met Jonthan Pitre even a few moments with the inspiring Ontario teenager is something you won’t forget. Pitre was honoured in Cornwall Monday for the work he has done to bring awareness and offer a face to one of the most painful and debilitating conditions known to modern medicine - Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a condition that causes his skin to blister and tear apart at the slightest contact. He lives in nearby Russell, but was brought to Cornwall Monday to drop the puck at the Cornwall Colts game at the Ed Lumley Arena and was also given a tour of the Cornwall Fire Station and saw a bit of the city from the front seat of one of the fire trucks. “Even when it’s not a good day…he makes a good smile out of a bad day,” mom Tina Boileau
said of her son, dubbed the Butterfly Child because his skin is as fragile as the tiny insect’s wings. Pitre has been featured in print media, and a powerful TSN special that showed first-hand the day-to-day struggles of people with EB. He must have the bandages that cover his body completely removed, and replaced, every two days. And Pitre is pain all the time. All. The. Time. He lives with the spectre of pain from the time he wakes up in the morning until he nods off to sleep. Even eating can lead to fiery lesions inside his mouth and throat. But to talk to Pitre, who at 15 is considered middle aged among EB patients who typically lived into their 30s, pain is second to enjoying life. And hockey. His first love is sports. “I’ve always liked hockey,” he said Monday from a wheelchair at ice level as the Cornwall Colts warmed up in the background. “I always
use all the energy I have because I won’t let EB stop me from living like I want to. “I know I’ll be tired later. But I’ll still give it.” His mother said making trips to Cornwall and spreading the word about EB, which has afflicted as many as 2,000 children in Canada, is important. A local fundraising drive, through the sale of plastic bracelets, helped raise $5,000 for an EB support group. “Having people reach out to us has been instrumental in trying to get the word out there,” Boileau said. “We want EB to be known as a very important disease that needs to have some attention because there is no cure.” Local boxing star Tony Luis made the trip to the Colts game Monday to meet the young man and offer some words of encouragement. “I wanted to meet you and show you some respect,” Luis told Pitre. When asked if he has become an inspiration to other people, including athletes, Pitre consid-

OPINION
Outside agency decisions create some consternation Todd Lihou
set aside for Agape had to be met. The concession, put on the table by budgetary hawks that were not as supportive, was it had to be listed as a one-time expenditure. Fine…until the next time Agape returns to city hall looking for money. This should not be interpreted as a shot against Agape. If I’m running a food bank I make as many grant applications as often as I can to secure the dollars needed. But all council did when they agreed to the money was open the door for similar requests from people at places like the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and a host of other agencies that aid poor people. “Hey, they got help for one year only… what about us?” It’s a good question – one we’re likely to see answered next year. In the meantime other agencies that have long-standing operating agreements with city hall complicated by landlord and tenant issues (like the museum and theatre) have their line items cut or frozen. This leaves us with one more budget meeting, likely to take place in March, where all of city council will get together to approve the document. It will be the first time for all of council to weigh-in on the document that was approved at the committee level in record time. If you’re expecting some last-minute shifts…don’t. City council is not about to reinvent the wheel after two budget committees approved documents with resounding voices of support.
todd.lihou@tc.tc
The body isn’t exactly cold, but what happens to TAG – Cornwall’s supposed vast collection of artwork when the final nail is driven into its coffin? The art gallery was denied funding again by city hall, and all indications are the embattled agency is on borrowed time. Though if the past is any indication, it’s likely we’ll hear something out of the gallery suggesting life support will continue. If it doesn’t though, who’s in charge of liquidating assets like the collection? The board? What happens to that money? I’m no artist (clearly) but if I were I’d probably have more than a passing interest in such a development. As an artist the big concern would be whether I’d be allowed back to the property after asking some rather pointed questions.
Historical Society’s $1-million stockpile (which includes some pretty cool stuff ) could one day be on the move. Historical society curator Ian Bowering let it be known last week that some of the stuff is already being trucked across the street to the former Cornwall Jail for display. He added if reduced funding from city hall makes it more difficult to properly care for and display the collection then it could be completely taken out of the Cornwall Community Museum in Lamoureux Park. You see, the city owns the museum – not its contents. Some councillors are only learning of this now. And while Bowering stressed he’s not looking for a fight there’s no doubt a message was being sent. One councillor who spoke with me after our story ran last week had a message in return: “They may not like (our) answer…or MUSEUM COLLECTION Speaking of vast collections, the SD and G end game.”

One last tip; my uncle and aunt do not respect what it says in Leviticus (19:19) by planting two different types of culture in the same field, as well as the woman who wears clothes made of different fabrics; cotton and polyester. Is it necessary to go through the embarrassing process to gather all the villagers to stone them, as prescribed in Leviticus, (24:10-16)? I know that you have thoroughly investigated all these cases, so I trust in your help. Thank you again for reminding us that the law of God is eternal and unchanging. Adrien Tessier, Cornwall

The second budgetary shoe dropped at city hall last week, when council’s outside agency committee wrapped up its work, saving you about $3,000 in the process. Councillors agreed to snip that amount from the outside agency bottom line (compared to last year), approving $544,000 in spending for the likes of the local tourism authority, historical society, seniors’ groups and the arts council to name a few. It’s probably the best of a bad situation, if your aim is to reduce the burden on city taxpayers. The Pandora’s Box that is outside agency funding in Cornwall is way out of control. We fund groups we should (tourism and the theatre come to mind), and then give away tens of thousands to other agencies that truly have no business coming to city hall looking for a handout (those seniors groups). There is some anger and disappointment, to be sure. That $20,000 Agape Centre expenditure was drawing plenty from the people I spoke with. They want to know when city hall got into the food bank business. A huddle of sorts took place among councillors during a break at the meeting last week, where councillors bargained over what they would support, and wouldn’t. For some reason committee members were adamant about presenting a united front and wanted the outside agency portfolio supported by a unanimous vote. This meant the desire to have something ART GALLERY COLLECTION

OPINION
Big news in Massena as radio personality arrested Claude McIntosh
THIS AND THAT In the week after presidential candidate Bernie Sanders shamelessly vilified police officers and called for legislation to protect citizens from “trigger-happy” cops, five U.S. police officers were shot and killed while on duty. None had his gun out. And in New York City, two police officers were shot and seriously wounded while on routine patrol in a housing development. So far in February, 10 police officers in the U.S. have been shot and killed in the line of duty. And who needs the protection? Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune reports that in the Windy City 369 people were shot in the first 50 days of 2016 and that 70 people died in the shootings. Not a single one at the hands of a Chicago police officer. At the current pace the city will have at least 2,560 shootings, mostly gangrelated, and 490 shooting deaths. TRIVIA ANSWER In 1873 Cornwall resident Thomas Murphy launched the town’s first taxi service using a horse and carriage. TRIVIA In 1974 high school teacher George Samis became the first New Democratic Party candidate to represent Cornwall at either the provincial or federal level. Who was the Conservative candidate in the byelection called to fill the seat left vacant by Conservative Fern Guindon: 1) James Kirkey, 2) Rev. Rudy Villeneuve, 3) Guy Leger, 4) Luc Guindon? A SLICE OF HISTORY Cornwall’s first“modern” street lights were installed in July 1882 when town council passed a bylaw allowing a gas company to lay pipes through the streets. By fall, gas lights had replaced coal oil lamps which had been in general use for street illumination up to that time. The first electric street lights appeared in 1887. It was the

job of the town constable to light and extinguish the coal oil lamp lights. FROM THE ARCHIVES On Jan. 25, 1978 a Pine Street boy was reported missing after going outside to play. For weeks the search failed to turn up a single clue. City police posted a $1,000 reward for information leading the boy’s whereabouts. The case of the missing boy wasn’t solved until early May when a group of youngsters playing on the snow dump on the south side of the canal discovered the body. Police pieced together the puzzle. On Jan. 25 the boy was playing with friends who had dug a cave, as kids often did, in the snow bank in the Cumberland/Second streets area. When the friends went home the boy continued playing in the cave. Tragically, he was scooped up by a frontend loader during snow-clearing operations and dumped in the back of a truck which emptied the load, and boy, at the snow dump. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR The frigid cold snap this week brought out a cold weather alert, which raises the question how society survived the pre-cold weather warning days? Back in the 1950s when Baby Boomers were urchins it was pretty simple. Your parents, particularly your mother, knew that when it was minus 20F and the wind was blowing, it was time to bundle up before going outside. Didn’t need the guardians of public health to hit them over the head with a cold weather warning. It was called common sense. You wore knitted woollen mittens, probably put on a pair of knitted woollen socks, wore a toque pulled down over your ears and for extra measure had a woollen scarf wrapped around your neck and pulled up over your mouth.

It would be hard to find somebody in Massena and the rest of St. Lawrence County who doesn’t recognize the name Sandy Cook. The larger than life Cook has been the WMSA morning show host for 42 years. His chatty show, The Extravaganza, is one of the longest-running radio shows in New York State. His folksy radio style, tailor-made for small-town America, made him a household name not only in Massena but throughout St. Lawrence County. Most times he knew callers by first name, sometimes asking how Bert or Jessie was doing. It was rare when he didn’t know a name offered for his Birthday Club announcements. When it came to popularity, Cook was to Massena and area residents what Max Keeping was to Ottawa and the valley: A legend. When Cook celebrated his 40th year at WMSA, the Malone Telegram told readers, “It is reassuring to hear Sanford T.’s voice in the morning” and that Cook told his audience “everything we need to know to begin our day. Sandy lets us know about school activities, tells students and seniors what is for lunch each and the schedule for upcoming sporting events.” But after village police raided his home Friday afternoon and took the veteran radioman and his house mate away in handcuffs, Cook’s sterling reputation took a beating. His career may be over. Win, lose or draw, it is almost impossible to recover a soiled reputation in a small town. Cook, 60, and Edward Slade, 24, were charged with cocaine and heroin possession. The town police blotter has never had a bigger
name; a name that jumped off the page. In 2001, Cook was elected to a four-year term as town supervisor, a position similar to chief administrative officer (CAO) in Ontario. He failed to be re-elected. The town rallied behind Cook in 2014 when he faced serious health issues. Fundraisers were organized by numerous organizations to help with his expenses. The arrest and charge against Cook put talk of the presidential nomination battles on the backburner. The arrest, as one resident put it, is the talk of the town. To say most villagers were shocked by the news and his mug shot in a police media release would be an understatement. The story in the Massena Courier-Observer had more than 58 comments by Sunday. Some, as anonymous comments can be, were less than kind. A few pleaded that Cook was innocent until found guilty. Police Chief Adam J. Love told the CourierObserver that the arrests were part of his department’s effort to put an end to illegal drug activity that has plagued the community and that the arrests were part of an ongoing investigation. The police said more arrests are pending. The key word in the statement is “ongoing investigation.” One would assume, considering Cook’s saintly status in the community, the raid and arrest were the result of a thorough investigation. It was no surprise that on Monday, the station said Cook had been placed on a leave of absence. Program director Todd Truax told the CourierObserver the main concern was the station’s image. Ah yes. The image.

Shar’s Tip of the Week Get rid of that soapy film on ceramic tile walls or floors - wipe with a solution of 1 part vinegar and 4 parts water over them. Rinse thoroughly with a clean water and buff tiles to prevent streaking. Dish washing liquid is also a degreaser, spread a thin layer over the scum area and gently scrub and rinse. For stained or mildewed grouting, apply a bleach solution(3/4 cup liquid chlorine bleach to 1 gallon water)with a cloth, wash and rinse.

Throughout our lives, our chronological age is questioned. Our answer may vary depending upon our actual age and the circumstances accompanying the query. When a two-year old toddler is asked “How old are you?” the response is likely to be four fingers proudly displayed and, “I’m almost fwee.” What we do to economize when eating out! If the sign at the entrance to the buffet restaurant states, “CHILDREN UNDER FOUR EAT FREE”, the parent of the five-year old may be tempted to claim, “She’s just under four – but big for her age.” Years later, if the sign is “CHILDREN UNDER TWELVE: HALF PRICE”, the teen is coached to explain, “I’m just under twelve, but thanks for noticing that I’m quite well-developed for my age.” The young male cashier is rather disappointed at hearing that and decides to not ask for your daughter’s name and phone number. Ah! The long-awaited age sixteen, the passionately anticipated eligibility to get a driver’s licence. The day before I turned sixteen, I asked my parents to sign for me so I could get my driver’s licence a year early. “No Nicky, we’ll have you wait until you’re

seventeen.” “But Mom, I have to get my licence now. I got a job driving a florist’s truck after school and on Saturdays, and I start this week if I can show Mr. Fogel my licence.” Reaching the age of 21 was no big deal for me. I didn’t have my first drink until I was in my late twenties. Water is still my favourite drink. When I reached 50, that had no more significance to me than just being a round number. However, the day I reached 55, I noticed the sign “FREE BANKING FOR SENIORS”. I went in and asked, “What’s a senior?” The next handy milestone was at 65. In 2004, I was chatting with the manager of the helipad in downtown Vancouver. Somehow, the fact that it was my 65th birthday came up. After being granted permission to have close access to the S-76 helicopters to photograph them, he asked “What are you doing to celebrate your birthday?” When I explained that I was going to take the ferry to Victoria, he offered to give me a free helicopter flight to Victoria. Did I take him up on his offer? Is the Pope Catholic? Getting out-of-country travel insurance becomes quite expensive once you’re beyond 75. When your age is beyond that watershed, you may be tempted to lie about your age and pre-existing health conditions. Don’t!

Firefighters rallying for one of their own in Lancaster Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
LANCASTER, Ontario - Randy Robertson probably never knew he had so many brothers...or maybe he did. South Glengarry firefighters from the Lancaster station are organizing a benefit for
their comrade who was involved in a rollover accident while responding to a call Feb. 6. Robertson was lucky to escape the accident alive, but now finds himself with a slew of serious injuries. He was released from hospital Monday. Deputy fire chief Mike Leger, who is chairing the benefit organizing committee, said firefight-
ers are lining up to help. “I had 16 guys looking to help,” Leger said of the tidal wave of support. “I had to tell some of the guys they wouldn’t be on the committee.” But that hasn’t stopped everyone from pitching in. The South Glengarry Station 4 Firefighter
Frozen Celebration Cake
Association will be hosting a spaghetti supper fundraiser as well as a silent auction for Robertson on Sunday, Feb. 21, at the Legion Hall in Lancaster from 4 to 7 p.m. Organizers said any monetary donation can be made to the firefighter association and all funds donated will be given directly to Robertson.

The 2015 edition of the Raisin River Canoe Race is set for The Nation Valley ATV Club’s Telus ATV Ride Sunday, April 10. for Dad, a prostate cancer fundraiser, returns to North Dundas on March 5. Caller would like to remind city council that we already did a Dillon report on Cornwall March Break is coming. Sign your kids up for Transit in 2007, which cost $75K and they told the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental council that cities of the same size DO NOT have Sciences’ Winter Fun Week at Cooper Marsh Sunday service. Before Sunday service, let’s fix (Mar. 14-18). For more details: riverinstitute.ca. night service and Saturday service.
