22 high schoolers to receive free prom makeover Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Some 22 high school girls will receive free makeovers this spring as they head off to prom with their favourite someone. Karley Gagnon (Hott Stylz) and Allison Belanger (Poppin’ Makeup and More) are organizing the first-ever SD and G Makeover Project. The duo has secured sponsorships that will allow two girls from 11 Cornwall and area high schools to be selected to have a makeover in time for their prom. Applications are being sought from family, friends, teachers, bosses and anyone else who knows of a deserving young woman looking forward to some pampering before heading off to prom. “We’re going to be reviewing every story,” Gagnon said in an interview. Belanger added that the stories can cover everything from an individual’s academic work,
to local volunteering and stories for young women of limited means. “If you have a niece that you think should be nominated then we want to hear from them,” said Belanger. Applications are being collected via email, and should include a message of not more than 100 words as to why the young woman should be nominated. More information on the rules of the project can be found on Facebook. The day of the prom for each school the winners - chosen by Belanger and Gagnon - will be pampered at The Loft, a Cornwall salon. Food (Moustache Joe’s), flowers (Blooms), makeup and nails (Hott Stylz and Poppin’ Makeup and More) as well as before and after photography (Carol Grant and Kelsey Lindsay) will be provided free of charge. The deadline to submit an entry is April 22, and Belanger and Gagnon are urging people to provide their entries as quickly as possible.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of Cornwall and area hardware stores that were once slated for closure are in the midst of expansions. The Home Hardware stores in the Seaway City and Ingleside are now owned by the Fines family, which officially took over ownership of the locations in January. Murray and Andrea Fines, along with their son Scott and daughter-in-law Amanda, have big plans for the future. “Everyone we talked to about this, said this market has room to grow,” said Scott. So, the Ingleside Home Hardware is
expanding for the creation of a full-service lumber yard, as well as an accompanying building centre which will include supplies of all kinds for a myriad of construction projects. The Cornwall store is also expanding its product line for a similar purpose. “A lot of people don’t understand Home Hardware to be as big as they are,” said Scott. “Our service is our biggest asset.” The Cornwall store will continue to employ about 16 people, with another seven at the Ingleside location. The Cornwall property was a corporate store before the Fines took over, while the Ingleside location was privately owned.

CORNWALL, Ontario ñ Sometimes you have to learn leadership lessons off the ice to become a magician with the puck. Just ask Ontario Hockey Academy Grade 12 student Morgan Farrow. The 17-year-old Nova Scotia native joined dozens of local high-schoolers on Thursday (March 3) at the Best Western Parkway Inn at a workshop hosted by the 12th annual Cornwall Community Police Service Youth Symposium, in partnership with the Eastern Ontario Training Board. “As a hockey player, it’s very important to be a leader, especially to help my teammates,” said Farrow, who is completing her final year of high school at the OHA in Cornwall, Ont. CCPS Youth Symposium guest speaker Etienne Vendette left the crowd of students spellbound with a series of sleight-of-hand tricks during his ‘Magic of Success’ presentation. The Montreal motivational speaker and professional illusionist also performed for hundreds of youth at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and St. Joesph’s Secondary School. “I’m trying to make people think about what they want really want to do in life, and what the next step is to get there,” said Vendette. “A major goal today was learning different leadership styles to help the students get the best results from their endeavors, including the importance

of time management.” CCPS Const. Jeff Lalonde told Seaway News the event aims to inspire Cornwall area youth to take leadership roles in the community. “We want them to know there are options to stay on the right path,” said Lalonde. Farrow noted she first encountered the Cornwall police while volunteering at the Agape Centre. “It’s nice to see them around the city helping out,” she said.

Some city councillors are demanding answers after yet another municipal roof has sprung a leak. The roof at the Cornwall Civic Complex began leaking on the weekend, the latest in a long line of buildings belonging to the city including the land ambulance headquarters, the Benson Centre, the aquatic centre and even the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge where a leaky roof has caused problems. What makes things worse at the complex is that in 2004 some $460,000 was taken out of the Progress Fund interest to cover repair costs to the roof. Two years later another $464,000 was removed from the interest account to replace the roof. Now 10 years later its leaking again and councillors want to know why - and how much it’s going to cost this time around.
St-Hubert Restaurant Celebrates
35 YEARS IN CORNWALL! The yellow and red pyramid has long been a familiar sight on Cornwall’s Brookdale Avenue. Born and raised in Cornwall, Keith and Paulette McMillan opened St-Hubert in 1981, making it one of the first of the franchise’s restaurants to open outside of its home province of Quebec. “I remember that we were all very excited to be opening a restaurant in our hometown,” says Karen McMillan, Keith and Paulette’s daughter and current owner of the restaurant, along with her husband Lloyd Lalonde. It was a big undertaking at the time, given the economic recession; interest rates were over 30%! “I never imagined then that I would eventually continue my parents’ legacy.” In 1997, Keith and Paulette began contemplating retirement. “My parents approached us about purchasing the restaurant, but at the time I owned M&M Meat Shops and Lloyd had just started a new career, so we weren’t sure that we were ready to take on a second business.” Eventually, the prospect of owning an established, successful restaurant lead Karen and Lloyd to purchase it in 1998, 17 years after its opening. Renovations were undertaken at once to add the Cafe-Bar and completely remodel the dining room. In 2007, yellow and red delivery cars were purchased and were immediately recognized around town. Five years later in 2012, a second renovation was started to modernize the Cafe-Bar and dining room, as was an expansion to add a dining room large enough to accommodate groups, and a dedicated take out counter. The restaurant’s new look isn’t the only evidence of its improvement over the years. Every year, the franchise recognizes the three restaurants with the best overall performance as determined by inspections, mystery shopper reports, and consumer surveys. “We’ve received seven awards over the last decade – including four gold roosters – so we’re very proud of our 80 employees’ hard work and dedication to excellence.” In 2012, the restaurant was not only awarded a gold rooster, but also won Business of the Year at the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Awards. But what really makes the Cornwall restaurant unique is its family tradition. “Not only has the restaurant been in my family since its opening 35 years ago, but we’re very lucky to live in a community with so many loyal customers who have supported us all of these years.” When asked about the future, Karen simply says, “We hope it’s full of satisfied customers… and a few more roosters would be nice!”

3 SPECIAL OFFERS, WITH OUR THANKS
NEWS
Police union, board exchange contract proposals Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
The union representing city police officer has exchanged proposals with the Cornwall Police Services Board. Cornwall Police Association president Dave MacLean confirmed the news Friday. Maclean said dates for contract talks are slated to begin later this year, with a total of six sessions set aside in both April and May. Maclean could not get into the specifics of what each proposal contains, citing the upcoming negotiations, but he said the framework of a deal is available if both sides continue to work together. “In my opinion the outlook is positive,” he said. “I feel as though the board and the association are both realistic in their individual proposals. “We’re conscious of the dollar side of things. We feel we’re looking out for the best interests of our members and the city.” Pat Finucan, the chair of the police services board, could not be reached for comment. The last police contract called for increases in 2013 (1.5 per cent, followed by 1.25 per cent), 2014 (1.5 followed by one) and 2015 (1.5 per cent). A first class constable makes more than $90,000 a year, which can get pushed to more than $100,000 with overtime.

Kinsmen Pizza Party - a decade of raising dough for charity Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario ñ Can Louis’ Pizzeria make it a four-peat? The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall’s 10th anniversary Pizza Party fundraiser takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at the Best Western Parkway Inn. “Cornwall has an appetite for generosity and all-dressed pizza...the tables are already halfway sold-out,” said event chair Dan Carbonnell, an active member of the service club. Newcomer Boston Pizza will compete against 2-4-1 Pizza, Bobby’s Place, Domino’s Pizza, Pizza Pizza, Milano’s, Best Famous Pizza and Louis’ Pizzeria. Dessert pizza will be served complimentary of Dairy Queen Grill & Chill Cornwall. In 2015, Louis’ Pizzeria was crowned champion for the third straight year, while second place went to 2-4-1 Pizza, and Bobby’s Place took third.
But the crowd had their say, too. The People’s Choice top three: Louis’ Pizzeria, Bobby’s Place, and Best Famous Pizza. “This is a fun, family-friendly event about enjoying the city’s legendary pizza and giving back to the community,” said Carbonnell. The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall’s annual Pizza Party has raised over $121,535 for local non-profits, youth programs, and other local charitable initiatives in the last decade. This year, proceeds will be sliced up several ways to the Longue Sault Public School Spec Ops Program (a fitness and character development program), Koala Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre in Cornwall, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall & District, and the family of Sean Cowan, an Eamerís Corners Public School student battling leukemia. The event is sponsored in part by TC Media - Cornwall Seaway News. Tickets are $25 and can be found at Scotiabank Cornwall and by emailing dcarbonnell@cogeco.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - And the award for best Oscars-themed charity event goes to... La Cuisine Volante’s inaugural ‘A Night in Hollywood’ gala in support of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation and children’s mental health programs. Over 165 guests strutted down the red carpet into the lavishly decorated Cornwall Civic Complex salons for the event’s debut on Saturday (March 5). Held the weekend after the Academy Awards ceremony in L.A., guests were treated to a feast of gourmet fare and entertained throughout the evening by Robert Cote from Quiet Moments, The Alison Wonderland Band, and DJ Sound’s Stacy McPhail.
“It was a huge success,” said James Morris, owner of La Cuisine Volante, the complex’s exclusive caterer. The selected beneficiary of the gala is the Cornwall and District Service Councilís $250,000 pledge by 2020 to the CCH Foundation toward children’s mental health programs. “The Hollywood gala was a fantastic boost to our campaign - we’re about halfway there and expect to reach our goal within two years,” said service council vice-president Marvin Plumadore. Allan Wilson, board chair, said the CCH Foundation is honoured to be the charity of choice for such a unique fundraiser. CORNWALL, Ontario – Another fundraiser is being organized in memory of a Cornwall mom and wife who tragically died in traffic accident last week – and this time it has the support of the family. Peter Brodka, who was initially unsupportive of any kind of work to raise money for his family, said in an interview he has been overwhelmed with messages of support from the community, and added people are asking for an opportunity to mourn the death of his wife Claudia Ordonselli, and pay respects in one way or another. “I’m 100 per cent behind it,” he said. “There’s a whole caravan of people coming over to pay respects to her.” The fundraiser, organized by Mike Lapensee and a team of volunteers, is slated to take place March 18 at the Army/Navy Club on Marlborough Street in Cornwall beginning at 4 p.m. and lasting into the evening. Tickets are being sold for a spaghetti supper and door prizes to help raise money for Brodka and his daughter Kristen. Live entertainment, including a performance by the Trench Town Oddities, as well as karaoke is planned. An online fundraiser was started, and quickly shut down, when Brodka said he was not in a position to accept help. That fundraiser did not
have the consent of the family. “I didn’t want people to think I was reaching out to get money,” said Brodka, who has been described as an incredibly proud man by many people Seaway News has spoken with. Brodka said he was later surprised that so many people want to help, and felt it was right to accept that support as a way to honour his wife. “Firstly it was a shock, and secondly it was a confirmation of how Claudia touched people every time she had an encounter with everyone,” he said of his wife, who worked at Tim Hortons on Brookdale Avenue, just across the street from where she was killed. “She was greater than life. She was a positive soul and we are looking forward to meeting the guests who are going to be coming and visiting her and the guests in her circle of influence.” Two vehicles collided last month and rocketed to the sidewalk on Brookdale Avenue and Ordonselli became pinned under one of them while walking to get groceries. Lapensee, who employed Ordonselli as a cleaning lady and was also her landlord at one time, said he felt compelled to help the family. “We became great friends,” he said. “We were talking every week. I’m doing this because I love the people. I want to show everybody…it’s too easy to be kind to people. Why doesn’t everybody do it?”

‘Local-focused’ store’s grand opening supports after-school program Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Even though Marrow & Spice is new to the city, it’s already giving back to the community. The health food restaurant and ‘local-focused’ store, which offers natural grocery items, celebrated their grand opening at 812 Pitt Street unit 40 on Friday (March 4) by donating 10 per cent of
proceeds to the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/ SDG. “They do great work, and I’m really impressed with what they’ve done to their main clubhouse,” said store owner Mike Merriam, a Finch-area pork, beef and honey producer. Trevor Smith, BGC communications director, said the donation will go toward the club’s afterschool teen program. Merriam credited his marketing coordinator
Lee Theodore, an avid local volunteer, for igniting the new partnership between the store and BGC. Marrow & Spice opened a few weeks ago, promising a return to the fundamentals of food, with everything from hot sauce to honey and meat products that have all been produced within a 100-km radius of the Seaway City. The Pitt Street store also offers pre-cooked take-out meals, with a wide-variety of soups, salads, and other authentic creations, local product
promotion, and culinary education through seminars and training. “The idea came from farmers’ markets,” said Merriam. “The primary directive is to be local and connect people with their food. And the response has been crazy. Stock has been selling out. It seems what people were trying to convince me of is true: Cornwall has a real desire to have good food that is sourced locally. All we have to do now is figure out how to survive in a small location.”
Local musician continues to give back to community CORNWALL, Ontario - In the last four decades, if you have followed the local music scene, you will have certainly had the pleasure of seeing and hearing one of the hardest working, and prolific musicians around. Presently playing in three bands, Mike Tessier, 53, remembers fondly where his love of music began, sitting around the kitchen table, as a young boy, playing his 45s on a record player, wanting to emulate his older brother, Gilles (Robert), an accomplished musician. “My first gig was at 13, playing for grade eight prom, at Jean XXIII, in the mid-70s.”

keep all internal moving parts clean. Cheap oil will work for any vehicle but your vehicle can really benefit from the good stuff. Because engine oil is in constant contact with the many moving parts it can start to collect minor pieces of debris. An oil filter will sift these fine particles of debris out and collect them in its catch. If debris is left to build up the filter can become clogged and the entire system can suffer. Changing the engine oil filter at least every other oil change is recommended to ensure safe operation.

The benefits of regular oil changes are many. In order to keep your vehicle performing optimally and to get the maximum life from your engine, your vehicle ABSOLUTELY needs an oil and filter change regularly. Why does your engine need a regular oil change? Let’s keep it simple and highlight some key facts about oil. Engine oil is a: • Lubricant – Oil, whether it is synthetic or natural is first and foremost a lubricant. After a while the oil will break down and lose its lubricating properties, this is natural and with almost any vehicle this will occur every 3 months of solid driving or 3,500-5,000 miles. • Coolant – Oil’s lubricating properties reduce friction and pulls heat away from the moving parts of the engine. Also most newer cars have an oil cooler that pumps cooled oil back through the engine to reduce overall temperature. • Cleaner – Engine oil will filter debris from the crank case and oil galleys. Most oil is also built with detergent packs which
Tessier reminisces about the repertoire and the band that the young group called Earth, in which he sang lead. “It was the time of Peter Frampton Comes Alive. We did a lot of stuff from that, and Bee Gees were really popular at that time.” He started playing the guitar he inherited after his brother’s passing, in ’77, and joined a band called Shotgun, with the likes of Roy Nichol, Mark Day, and Marc Chartrand. You will certainly have heard those names, many times over too. One night at practice, he jumped on Nichol’s (April Wine fame) drum set, for fun and

McLeod said only properties on the east side of Boundary Road, from Tyotown Road north to Highway 401, would be serviced by city water, if the agreement becomes a reality. It’s believed any costs associated with the plan would be borne by South Glengarry.

CORNWALL, Ontario – South Glengarry wants to borrow a cup of water from Cornwall city hall. Make that a few million cups of water. The rural municipality made a public plea to members of Cornwall council Monday to connect properties on the east side of Boundary Road to the city’s fresh water and waste water systems. South Glengarry Mayor Ian McLeod said increased development on Boundary Road spurred his community to make the request. “We’ve seen over the last couple of years Boundary Road…certainly has had many, many changes. It’s no longer just a connecting link. It has become an employment centre,” he said. “I think it is acknowledged by everyone in business that you require full municipal services. “It’s working, but it’s not working nearly as well as it should.” City council has referred the request to administrators who will prepare a report on the feasibility of such a move. Cornwall’s municipal water system could easily accommodate the request. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said the water works in Cornwall currently operates at just 30 per cent of its capacity. “That leaves a lot of capacity,” he added. But just how much it would cost to see the scheme become a reality remains to be seen. McLeod could not provide, when pressed by city Coun. Claude McIntosh, a specific dollar figure for the project – nor could he say definitively how much water the township needs. O’Shaughnessy said some of those answers could come when city administrators submit their report on the subject. It’s not known when city administrators will be ready to release their report. In the meantime the Cornwall mayor said the project would see the city water system connected to buildings and properties that have already been developed. “You would be looking at servicing existing structures,” he said. The mayor also added a memorandum of understanding Cornwall signed with North Glengarry years ago, to transport city water to
OPINION
Spring has sprung a few leaks in Cornwall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
Spring has sprung, it appears. The snow is melting, birds are singing and roofs are leaking…again. We found out this week, thanks to a photo that was circulating on Facebook, that the roof at the Cornwall Civic Complex has sprung a leak. This has ruffled more than a few feathers around the city council table. The problem lays not so much in the fact that the roof is leaking, but that it was replaced just 10 years ago when $464,000 in Progress Fund interest was used to help cover the bill. To make matters worse just two years prior to that some $460,000 (from the Progress Fund account yet again) was used to repair the roof. That’s nearly $1 million from an account that is supposed to be used on municipal projects that improves our ‘quality of life’ here in Cornwall. Instead there are now suggestions the money was wasted on a roof project(s) that barely lasted 10 years before beginning to fail. And it’s not the first roof problem we’ve seen among municipal buildings. The aquatic centre roof began to leak shortly after construction. So did the roof at the land ambulance headquarters on Campbell Street. Ditto the Benson Centre…and even the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge. Things have gotten so bad the lawyers are now involved. City hall has become embroiled in litigation concerning the Benson Centre and
councillors are receiving regular updates on the legal proceedings via closed-door meetings. The big question centres on who is to blame. Did architects submit a flawed design? Are contractors coming up short? Have the buildings been improperly maintained? Have winter conditions led to rapid deterioration? Is this just an expensive coincidence? No one really knows, but as someone who put a $5,000 roof on his house just a couple of years ago I can tell you one thing: it’s probably a little of everything. We knew for years our roof was ripe for replacement. I was hoping against hope that we could squeeze one more year out of our cracking, peeling shingles. But when we arrived home from work one day to find a small puddle in the kitchen it was obviously time for a replacement. It was right around this time of year, when snow and ice are melting. Since then we have made it a point to ensure our gutters are cleared every autumn, and I can even be found in the late winter months atop a ladder, with a hammer in my hand, chipping ice out the drain pipes. I also check the attic on a regular basis to make sure everything is dry. I guess the point is when repair/replacement of roofs is measured in the hundreds of thousands of dollars then every ‘i’ must be dotted and ‘t’ crossed. It’s clear with so many problems
among municipal buildings that someone, somewhere, has not done their job. PORT OF CORNWALL It’s getting down to crunch time concerning negotiations between the city, Akwesasne and Transport Canada regarding the harbour lands in Cornwall. The deadline to wrap things up is supposed to be the end of this month, when it’s presumed all three parties will agree to see the federal government divest itself of the property. Moving forward the land will be administered by a board made up of both Cornwall and Akwesasne representatives.
Money is a sticking point, as it almost always is. But a bigger question looms on the horizon…once that property comes under the control of the city and Akwesasne, what then? It will cost millions to get that land cleaned up in an effort to make it useable for any residential/commercial purpose. Decades as a conduit for industrial practices means the harbour lands will need a major cleanup. Who pays for that? And how long will it take. The ownership change for those lands will present more questions than answers in the weeks ahead.
LETTERS Editor: Some 70% of the people in Ontario get fluoridated water. The benefit is that it strengthens teeth as they are formed. The benefit lasts as long as you keep your teeth. It reduces the number of cavities, and it reduces the severity of cavities. Some think it is unnecessary, now that we have fluoridated toothpaste, but painting it on the surface of the tooth isn’t nearly as effective. What about the cost? At $50,000.00 per year, that’s little more than $1.00 per person. Perhaps $100.00 for each person’s lifetime. How does that compare to the cost of one simple filling?
As taxpayers, we can pay $1.00 a year, per person, to reduce cavities, or, over the course of a lifetime, you can pay your dentist for extra fillings, and later, further repairs, and further repairs. For $1.00 a year, you save a lot of money, and discomfort. Is it safe? Despite considerable publicity given to concerns about an extremely wide range of possible side effects, Ontario’s Minister of Health considers it safe. So does Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. And Health Canada. And the World Health Organization. Cornwall has fluoridated its water since about 1960. The previous Council was asked to
discontinue the process, and listened to the arguments at length. It was pointed out that Calgary, very prosperous at the time, had decided to discontinue fluoridation in 2011. If that’s a good decision for Calgary, why not Cornwall as well? Our Council decided to continue the process. Council’s decision was promptly undone by equipment failure at the filtration plant. There was some concern about the cost of repairs. More significant concern was raised about worker safety. For two years, there has been no debate about fixing the equipment, or about worker safety.
I don’t know what is involved with the worker safety concerns, but it seems to me that this work has been done safely for over 50 years, here, and throughout Ontario for 70% of our population. And what about Calgary? Just three years after they stopped fluoridating municipal water, a reputable study shows a significant increase in cavities for children in Grade Two. How sad for Calgary. And, how sad for Cornwall. Stephen B. Renner Cornwall

FROM THE ARCHIVES Local merchants who opposed a proposed shopping centre on the old WW2 training grounds that ran from behind Cornwall Armoury to Ninth Street were told at a June 28, 1957 Cornwall Planning Board hearing that whether they liked it or not, the first shopping centre sooner or later would be built somewhere in the city. Those fighting the training grounds site included the nearby Hotel Dieu Hospital, medical association and school boards. The strongest opposition came from the Retail Merchants Association represented at the hearing by city lawyer M.J. Fitzpatrick. He reminded the board that the 190-member association employed 2,000 people and paid almost 50 percent of Cornwall’s taxes. Lucien Lamoureux, counsel for the Roman Catholic School Board, warned that traffic brought to the area by the shopping centre would be a danger for school children. Dale Hawerchuk, former Cornwall Royals superstar and current coach of the Ontario Hockey League Barrie Colts, will be back in a Winnipeg Jets uniform next season. Not for the entire season. Just one game ... the outdoor Winter Heritage Classic old timers tilt on Oct. 22. The game will be the undercard for the main event the next day when the Jets play host to the Edmonton Oilers in a regular NHL clash. Hawerchuk’s last season - No. 16 - in the NHL was 1996-97 with the Philly Flyers. He joined the NHL Hall of Fame in 2001. The Legends fixture will pit the Oilers (originally known as the Alberta Oilers in the World Hockey Association) old timers against the Jets of yesteryear. Hawerchuk, whom the Jets made the first overall draft choice in 1981, will captain the Jets. The greatest of them all, Wayne Gretzky, will wear the “C” for the Oilers. The lineups will include Teemu Selanne, Bobby Hull, Mark Messier, Juri Kurri, Paul Coffey, Dave Semenko and Blair MacDonald, the former Cornwall Royal who is one of the original Oiler captains and was a Gretzky line mate. MacDonald played some of his best hockey on The Great One’s line, but it is hard to find a player who didn’t benefit from the Gretzky wizardry. Hawerchuk told the Winnipeg Sun that he hopes to convince former Winnipeg line mates Paul “Shotgun” MacLean and Brian Mullen to join the roster. A sell-out crowd of 33,000 is expected. Average ticket price is $250 with the best seat in the house going for $600. That would generate an $8.25
million gate. Pity that Florida and Arizona will never get a kick at the Heritage Classic cashbox. All they can hope for is the winds of climate change to blow their way. HERE AND THERE Actor Kirk Douglas, who will turn 100 in December, and his wife Anne have made another hefty donation to St. Lawrence University just across the river in Canton, N.Y. The cheque is for $2 million. Douglas, who grew up in a poverty-stricken immigrant family, graduated from SLU in 1939 after borrowing the tuition money and paying it back by working two or three part-time jobs. A big chunk of the money will be used to help students in need of financial assistance. It comes at a time when the university has announced that students will pay $2,240 more for tuition and fees next fall. This hikes one-year tuition to $64,390. In recognition of a previous multi-million dollar donation, the university named a hall after the Kirk and Anne Douglas. ... Startling declaration by Bernie Sanders and H.R. Clinton during Sunday night’s Democratic debate. Both said they can beat The Donald in November. What else would they say, that they would lose? THIS AND THAT The Council of the Great Lakes Region has made Ed Lumley one of five honourary patrons. He is in good company. The other four include two former U.S. ambassadors to Canada (James Blanchard and David Wilkins) and two former Canadian ambassadors to the U.S. (Raymond Chretien and Michael Kergin). The principle mandate of honourary patrons is to promote the council and help it identify opportunities to strengthen the United States-Canada relationship in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Region

Champagne said all proceeds from the bonspiel stay in the Cornwall area for vision rehabilitation services, such as developing independent living skills, teaching braille, and navigation with a white cane. A total of 18 teams registered, including the Kingston Blind Curlers. “Having a visual impairment doesn’t stop them,” said Champagne, “in fact, they’re usually winnning.” She noted that attendance took a slight dip this year since the bonspiel landed on the same day as the 2016 Tim Hortons Brier in Ottawa. Julie Herman, Ryan’s mom, thanked the Cornwall Curling Centre, event sponsors, and bonspiel participants for their continued support. Herman can do everything a child with vision in both eyes can. He enjoys skiing and snowboarding, playing ball hockey, volleyball, and soccer, yet he still wonders if being visually impaired will impact his future. ìI don’t think about my vision, I just do it,î said Herman. Bonspiel chair and Herman’s grandmother Barb Champagne told Seaway News CNIB has done wonders by helping him successfully adjust to being visually impaired, especially when he was first diagnosed.

L’an dernier, la Dictée P.G.L. a amassé 1 042 123 $.

TRACKS of sliding doors
Tracks are a natural settling place for things and the moisture that always condenses on glass or mirrors. Vacuum first and use an old tooth brush to help remove most of the dirt. Then use a spray bottle with an all purpose cleaner, spray the tracks then drape a cleaning cloth over a screwdriver and run it through the tracks until clean. After dried, spray a little WD-40 on them.

OPINION
Investing in immigration will solidify the future Ed Allard
26 - Thursday, March 10, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
Immigration is what built this country and there is every reason to believe that an investment in further immigration is an investment in the country’s future. This is especially true in a country where the birth rate is nearing the level where insufficient children are being born to replace the older generation. All Canadian families descend from immigrants except, perhaps, for some pure native families. Experience has shown that, once settled and gainfully employed, immigrants become net contributors to our economy and to society in general. In many cases they bring with them skills that local employers need, which are not readily available or in sufficient quantity within the resident population. Those are some of the reasons the Eastern Ontario Training Board and T.R. Leger teamed up about five years ago to seek funding from the federal government for a Local
Immigration Partnership (LIP). That partnership has since grown to become the Five Eastern Counties LIP, involving a number of key stakeholders across SDG and Prescott-Russell. The purpose of the LIP is to develop strategies that will facilitate services to immigrants in order to better settle them into the community as well as to develop the organizational connections that can put those strategies into action. The strategies include: accessing employment in the area; social integration into the community; promoting an environment free of racism and discrimination; and ensuring newcomers are aware of our laws, norms and the general Canadian culture that underpins our society. The most common country of origin for recent immigrants to the local region is Pakistan; followed closely by Sri Lanka, with India, Colombia, Haiti, France, Bangladesh and Ethiopia in smaller numbers. But the list
goes beyond that to involve more than 25 different countries in all. It’s a notable change from historical immigration patterns from Europe. English is only a small percentage of the languages spoken; so English language training is a critical initial requirement for finding work, medical and other services and for otherwise integrating into the community. While not specifically designed for the current Syrian refugee crisis, the structures and strategies that have been set up through the LIP should work equally as well. The process for getting refugee families to Cornwall is outside the responsibilities of the LIP. That will be determined by the federal government and will depend on local sponsoring agencies or groups of individuals. However, the fact that the LIP exists and that resources exist for finding housing, employment, translation services, etc. could serve to enhance the applications by those groups who wish
to sponsor refugee families. It is unlikely, at this point anyway, that the area is going to be inundated with refugee families. But it is possible that anywhere between one and several families could arrive over the next year. Some more are possible after that, depending on circumstances. Those numbers should be within the region’s capabilities to absorb without unduly affecting employment opportunities for current residents or the unemployment rate. Should NavCan become a temporary residence for larger numbers while awaiting placement, it could well increase short-term demands on some local services. However, it does not necessarily mean they will all be settled locally. In any event, the LIP continues to evolve its strategies and action plans to meet the changing situation. More information about the Five Eastern Counties LIP can be found at www.5eo.ca.

McCALLUM, Morley Clinton. It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Morley on March 3, 2016. He passed at Cornwall Community Hospital surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer. Morley was born in Cornwall February 6, 1948, son of Donald and Louise McCallum, husband to (Sharon Clark), father to (Jamie, Clinton, Kenneth, Kevin and Bradley). Brother to Donald, Garth (predeceased ), Sharon, John, Ellen, Mary, Melvin, Leah and a favorite uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Morley was raised in Cornwall and Long Sault where he attended both public and high school. Moved to Alberta in the early seventies where he met his wife Sharon. They eventually moved to British Columbia where they raised their family. After retirement they moved back to Cornwall. Morley’s hobbies included hockey, harness racing and most of all singing and playing his guitar. His passion for music was inspired by his dad and his older brother John, where they played and sang on many occasions in the family home. He continued in his retirement years to sing and play in the Cornwall area with his good friends Barry and Brian, known as the “ The New Folkies.” A very special thank you to Michael MacDonald, not only his cousin but his best friend too. Thank you, Mike and family. Morley will be sadly missed by so many friends and family and never forgotten. Respecting Morley’s wishes there will be no visitation or service. Cremation services entrusted to the M. John Sullivan Funeral Home. As expressions of sympathy memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. 6676200

What are you Air Force guys doing on our base? You stealing our lumber?” The moment of truth had arrived. It was obvious they had been caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Without a pause or a stammer, one of the airmen stepped forward and spoke up. “We had a

My Dad bought my Mom a piano for her birthday. A few weeks later, I asked how she was doing with it. ‘Oh,’ said My Dad, ‘I persuaded her to switch to a clarinet.’ ‘How come?’ I asked. ‘Well,’ he answered, ‘because with a clarinet, she can’t sing.’
