Cornwall rallies for Ordonselli: ‘If God was looking for an angel, he found her’ Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ont. – Claudia Ordonselli made quite an impression on the City of Cornwall. Over 200 people rallied at a spaghetti supper fundraiser at the Army, Navy, Air Force Club on Marlborough Street Friday (March 18) in memory of the Cornwall mom and wife who tragically died in a traffic accident last month. The event, organized by Mike Lapensee and a team of volunteers, raised $3,900 for the victim’s family. “The community support is overwhelming, actually, really overwhelming,” said Peter Brodka, Ordonselli’s husband. “This man (Lapensee) is a local hero. He stepped up and did something that is incredible.” Lapensee previously employed Ordonselli, 61,
and he was also her landlord at one time. “If God was looking for an angel, he found her,” said Lapensee. “She would come into the house and say, ‘Hi! How are the boys?’ It was everybody else she cared about. She never talked about herself. The lady was a workhorse and always had a permanent smile. It was too early. It wasn’t her time.” Two vehicles collided on Friday (February 26) and rocketed to the sidewalk on Brookdale Avenue and Ordonselli, became pinned under one of them while walking to get groceries. She was rushed to hospital by ambulance where she died of her injuries. “When this tragedy happened I wasn’t aware that it was a friend of mine. I found out from her husband afterwards. So I felt compelled to help alleviate some pain and the financial burden as well
as show respect and love for the family,” said Lapensee. “They are hard-working people, who serve the community. It’s time to give back.” He noted that 70 local businesses donated items as door prizes. “I never knew so many people cared about us and my mom - it’s surreal, really,” said Kristen Brodka, 18, Ordonselli’s daughter. Organizers gave a special shout-out to the ANAF club for supplying the venue and Cornwall rock outfit Trench Town Oddities for providing the live entertainment. “When people are down and need some help, we need to bond together as a community,” said T.T.O. frontman Sean Harley. In addition to being a beloved wife and mother, Ordonselli was a well-known server at the Tim
Hortons on Brookdale Avenue. Brodka said he first came to Cornwall in search of a job in broadcasting after graduating from Dawson College in downtown Montreal. What followed was a career-changing opportunity with CJSS Radio. “This town in an incredible place to live,” he said. “In a time of need these people step up to the plate — my incredible friends that I have here in Cornwall. I knew back then as I started progressing in my career that one day I’d be back. And so it happened, some 40 years later, I brought back a wife and a daughter. It was our interntion to remain here the rest of our lives and grow old together. Well, that has since changed. What hasn’t changed is the community’s spirit. I’m fortunate that I have their strength and support.”

Could be years before harbour lands see significant development CORNWALL, Ontario – It could be years before the harbour lands in Cornwall start to see things like parks and docks for pleasure craft, city councillors learned Monday night. While the city, Akwesasne and Transport Canada are approaching the end of negotiations that will see the federal government divest itself of the property, even if that happens soon it will take years to redevelop the land. Planning manager Ken Bedford told the city councillors at a planning advisory committee (PAC) meeting Monday plans to change the zoning of the land – which includes controversial chemical tanks owned by Trillium Distribution – are only the first step in a long process. “Really we’re looking at what the appropriate moves will be towards the future. The next 20 years for example,” he said. Harmonizing the zoning in the region, and moving away from manufacturing-type operations, will open up the space for playgrounds, docks and park space – years from now. A former city councillor who attended the
meeting said the public is looking for answers sooner rather than later. “This means nothing unless there is a date some time down the road,” Claude Poirier told PAC members. “I’m supportive of what is proposed… but the question that begs to be answered - these lands are government of Canada lands - when can we conceivably look at some true action?” It’s a good question – with no specific answer. “There are leases that are on the property,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy – referring to the Trillium lease to operate its chemical tanks. “Those leases are still confidential because they are the property of the federal government, not the City of Cornwall. There are escape clauses that fall

short of the dates of the lease. “(But) they cannot be discussed at this time.” Coun. Bernadette Clement said it’s important to consider future land uses for the harbour early in the process. “We’re looking and planning for the future – and this is what we’re looking at,” she said. “We didn’t do that before and look what we got stuck with – tanks!” Coun. Mark MacDonald said the public won’t wait decades for movement on the harbour file. “They don’t want to see it over 20 years. They want it over a few years,” he said. “We cannot drop the ball on the Port of Cornwall. The federal government shoved those tanks down our throats.
“I think it is only fair the public know at the very minimum how long those tanks will be there.” O’Shaughnessy confirmed Akwesasne officials have been apprised of the zoning changes planned by city hall, and are largely supportive of the moves being planned. PAC is expected to approve the zoning changes next month. In the meantime the use of the Cornwall port as a working harbour has been extremely limited. It’s unlikely any future use of the harbour will not include a manufacturing component for deep-water vessels transporting goods.

Giroux returns to his roots, and it shows in his artwork Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – When Pierre Giroux made the decision to move back to Cornwall it was to be close to family. But the oil painter who packs more talent into one brush stroke than most people exhaust in a lifetime had no idea it would impact him in other ways. Giroux’s artwork is helping to bridge gaps in the city, including some ongoing work to immortalize local landmarks by way of paintings that are being reproduced on massive steel plaques to be installed throughout Cornwall. “It’s bringing the community together a bit – all the BIAs and downtown,” he said from his studio-like home on Water Street. Giroux’s return to Cornwall, following years of living in places like Vancouver, Toronto and even parts of Europe, has trickled into his paintbrush. Gone are the images of deserted rooms and locales – now his paintings depict places that have a homey-like atmosphere. “I don’t know why I liked these abandoned spaces…if you look at the new ones they look lived in,” he said – probably because he’s painting from his hometown. “This house has helped me a lot – it feels more secure, in this
place.” And business is brisk. Giroux continues to send paintings to the West End Gallery in Edmonton, where his work is nearly sold out. As a full-time artist he’s been commissioned for other pieces, on top of the work he is completing for the city, but has had to tell some clients it will be a while. “I told them it will be about another year,” he said. “I’m really busy right now.” Giroux, 43, graduated from Ecole Secondaire La Citadelle in the early 1990s, but by the end of the decade was feeling the pull out of the city. He attended the Ontario College of Art and Design to further develop his skills and during his final year, he and fellow students moved to Florence, Italy for a time to study and experience the environment that has inspired so many artists. But his artistic roots were planted in Cornwall. “I was taught at 12 by a man from Cornwall named Bob Eadie,” said Giroux, who explained that at the time his instructor chiefly created work related to the city’s history. “He passed away a year later. “It’s ironic that I’m doing this work now. It’s like things have come back 360 degrees.” Indeed. Following his return from Europe Giroux
Pierre Giroux would spend two years honing his signature style by visiting old houses in and around Cornwall and sketching for hours. He also studied animation at Sheridan College and his time on the West Coast has cemented his reputation within the arts world - including those who paint, dance and sculpt here in Cornwall.
Giroux points to galleries and agencies like OBO Studios, Focus Art and Your Arts Council as entities that didn’t exist when he left Cornwall nearly 20 years ago. “The art is evolving - it’s more sophisticated,” he said. “The city itself...it’s positive too. All of this is inducing a more artistic community. “And it’s nice to see.”

Local border crossing left off list of pre-clearance checkpoints CORNWALL, Ontario - Despite reports that suggested the border crossing near Cornwall would benefit from a project that would ease travel congestion, nothing has been announced in Washington. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Barack Obama have endorsed plans to continue to move ahead on pre-clearing trav-
ellers moving between the U.S. and Canada. The Canadian Press reported that Massena, N.Y., just across the border from Cornwall, was to be one of the locations chosen for the pilot project that would see travellers pre-cleared for venturing over the border, before actually reaching a checkpoint. But in a statement Trudeau listed only
changes at large centres like Toronto, Vancouver, Quebec City and Montreal. “We also committed to make our borders more open and more secure, and we agreed in principle to expand preclearance to Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto, Jean Lesage International Airport in Quebec City, as well as rail service in Montreal and Vancouver,” read Trudeau’s
statement. “The President and I reaffirmed our commitment to streamline trade between our countries. Each day, $2.4 billion worth of goods and services cross the border. We agreed to work in collaboration to bring trade and investment to new heights.” It’s unclear if more announcements on the pre-clearance plan will be made.

CORNWALL, Ont. – Zimba, a golden Labrador, is much more than a best friend to Karli. The specially-trained service dog accompanies the non-verbal autistic girl wherever she goes. “Since Karli doesn’t have a sense of danger, Zimba helps keep her safe, which is affecting our lives for the positive,” said Jennifer Fullarton, Karli’s mom. “Having a service dog also gives her, and our family, a newfound independence.” Fullarton said her seven-year-old daughter benefits greatly from having a furry companion trained to help her cope with anxiety, social interactions, and ready to intervene if she wanders off. The Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides placed Zimba with Karli in November 2015 after Fullarton received 10 days of training experience. It cost approximately $25,000 for the

a perfect one-timer that beat Lacasse at 9:57 of the middle frame. Then, Anthony Stewart pounced on a huge rebound and buried a shot past Lavigne only 33 seconds into the third to give Jonquiere a 3-2 lead. Curtis Tidball challenged Hubert Poulin and Guillaume Veilleux took on Sean McMorrow in a pair of first-period tilts. In the second, Keven Veilleux dropped Luis Tremblay, who received an instigator penalty. Jonquiere outshot Cornwall 5-2 in overtime and 41-26 overall. Vigneault-Belanger (first), Lavigne (second) and Keven Veilleux were the announced stars. The Marquis scored five straight goals in the third period en route to a 5-4 victory over the River Kings on Friday night in Game 3. Cornwall built a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play on goals by Nicholas Pard, Ouimet and Nicolas Larocque-Marcoux. But Jonquiere took over in the third, to the delight of the 1,961 fans in attendance. Peter James Corsi led the Marquis attack with a two-goal performance. Eric Satim scored with 24 seconds to play for Cornwall, but it was too little too late. Charles Corsi made 28 saves but was tagged with the loss in goal for the River Kings.

CORNWALL, Ont. – The Cornwall River Kings have been eliminated from the LNAH playoffs. The River Kings season came to an end on Saturday night in front of 669 fans at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Jonquiere skated to a 4-3 overtime victory to sweep Cornwall in four games. Jeremy Vigneault-Belanger scored the game-winning goal at 10:42 of the extra session. Moments before, Cornwall had a goal disallowed on an offside call. Charles Lachance tipped home William Lacasse’s shot from the point with 8:36 to play in the third period to tie the game for Cornwall and send the game to overtime. Keven Veilleux opened the scoring for the River Kings 67 seconds into the contest. Francois Ouimet sprung Veilleux loose on a semi-breakaway and the towering centre beat Loic Lacasse through the legs. With Jonquiere on a powerplay, Jonathan Paiement leveled the score with a blast from the point at 18:26 of the first. Mathieu Brunelle gave the Marquis a 2-1 lead with a breakaway goal on a nifty deke at 5:01 of the second. Moments after killing off a lengthy two-man advantage, the River Kings went on a 5-on-3 of their own and David Croteau set up Ouimet for

CORNWALL, Ontario - Joanne Vien only spent about a year or so working as a temp at the Cornwall Transit office. But in that time her cheer and effervescence translated into bonds with coworkers that stretched beyond eight hours a day. So when Vien was diagnosed in January with breast cancer, forcing her to shelve work in favour of surgery, doctors’ appointments and treatment, her colleagues got together to help. Big time. “It’s really beautiful what they have done,” said Vien, whose son Eric moved back home to help his mother in the days and weeks to come. “At first I said ‘No.’They are busy and they all have their own families. “But my son said to me ‘Mom, if they want ot help you, you should let them.’ “I was surprised - and overwhelmed.” Her colleagues at Transit have organized a fundraiser for Vien, which will take place March

Next up will be an extended period of chemotherapy in Ottawa, followed by radiation sessions. Vien said her breast cancer is type 2. “It’s not great news, but it’s not the worst news either,” she said, explaining there are five breast cancer stages. The fundraiser will include live entertainment, a door prize, silent auction and light lunch. The $10 tickets can be purchased at the ANAF club in advance, or the night of the event.

The board had previously considered taking ownership of the aging facility, but opted for a new space as part of the Playhouse building. “This will complete our cultural space,” said Bowes, “with the shop, theatre, box office and now a rehearsal space.” The project is a partnership with Heritage Canada which contributed, $97,000, half of the funds required for the job. The Playhouse will take care of the rest. Other than for rehearsal, Bowes sees many uses for the space including meetings, among others. CORNWALL, Ontario - Now that spring is in the air, The Upper Canada Playhouse is once again in a flurry of activity, with a new season soon to begin and a new rehearsal space soon to be completed. Construction on the 2000 square foot addition to the Playhouse began before Christmas, and now that the snow is gone, work has reconvened, with an anticipated time of completion set for the end of April. “For us, it’s going to be great to not have to go off-site to rehearse,” said Donnie Bowes, artistic director. For many years, the company had been rehearsing at the Masonic Hall a few blocks away, from the
cert,” he said. It all starts in April, with Alice’s Restaurant, a concert of hits from the 60s and 70s, running the gamut, in terms of genres, from The Eagles to Simon and Garfunkel, and from Roger Miller to Kenny Rogers. The regular season begins with, Burglar in my Bed, by Michael Parker, the creator of such Playhouse hits as The Amorous Ambassador, Sensuous Senator and Hotbed Hotel, running from June 9 to July 3. Next, is Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, from July 7 to July 31. This is the story of a group of southern ladies who gather at Truvy’s Beauty Shop to share life’s laughter and tears. In the classic Broadway hit, Last of the Red Hot
Lovers, by Neil Simon (August 4 to August 28), a middle-aged and overworked restaurateur wants to add a little spice to his life, before it’s too late. Finishing off the regular season, from September 8 to October 2, Jonas and Barry in The Home, by and starring Norm Foster, tells the story of two friends who are living in an assisted-living home together. Another concert, Dean and Jerry, What Might Have Been, featuring timeless hits and hilarious bits from the most famous comedy team of the 50s, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, bookends the season (October 18 to October 23). Miracle on 34th Street (December 1 to December 18), a beloved Christmas tale, ends off the year, on a magical note. For further information, visit www.uppercanadaplayhouse.com.

Joel Sauve releases full-length album he built from the ground up Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Joel Sauve, a Cornwall native that is known through the region for his rich voice and powerful live performances, can now add heavy-lifter to his resume. Sauve has completed a full length album, Mezzanine, that has every drop of his blood, sweat and tears in every guitar lick and drumbeat. Because he did everything from playing the instruments to building a home-based studio and learning the computer software to get the album finished. “Dude...you have no idea how many hours were spent on this,” he said dryly, in an interview from his new home in Ottawa. “When I moved up here I bought a Mac, and downloaded the app to work on this album.” Then he built his studio, and began sinking every waking moment into building an 11-song album that describes personal experiences of loss, deception and rising above the noise. “I really wanted to make something that people could play from start to finish,” said Sauve. “The way an album should be played.” And Sauve has reinvented himself. On the stage he goes by the moniker Jaw Slinky, and play on words - and himself. “The main reason I went with that is because I kind of have a crooked jaw,” he said with a laugh. “I was also looking for something unique. They are the same initials as my name, and the same number of letters. “And I’ve always liked band names that kind of have that light-heavy sound - like Led Zepellin.” A grand CD-release party is planned for May 20 at Greenfield’s Pub in Barrhaven. In addition to his new bandmates Camil Lapointe (guitar), Joel Plamondon (bass) and Keith Charlebois (drums), Sauve has secured Graham Greer, Tracey Lalonde and Tyler Keeley who will perform the same evening. Mezzanine is available for digital download at a variety of places. More information can be found on the Jaw Slinky website.

OPINION
We’re in for a long wait when it comes to harbour development Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
When we were kids, a treat for my brother and I would be a drive by the Cornwall harbour in the family station wagon to see if there were any ships docked at the once-busy port. Sometimes a Canadian Coast Guard vessel could be found (the Simcoe and the Griffon come to mind) and on other occasions it was the cargo ship Thor (or one of its sisters) transporting caustic soda. Those days were some 30-plus years ago… and thankfully that’s where they will remain. If the comments coming out of city hall mean anything, the Port of Cornwall and associated harbour lands have seen the last of the large-scale lakers that travelled up and down the St. Lawrence Seaway transporting everything from salt to grain and chemicals. The city has grown in the time since the port was a hub of activity. The infrastructure in the area no longer supports a deep-water port. There’s no route for truck traffic to unload cargo from a large ship, and other cities with such ports have rail service to augment the capabilities of a working harbour. Cornwall has none of that. So, whether by design or simply an evolution of time, the book is slowly but surely closing on the Cornwall harbour as a deep-water port. And that is a good thing. Before the city, Akwesasne and federal government wrap up their talks on the divestiture of the land, barges filled with calcium chloride will continue to arrive at the harbour and
offload their cargo into a pair of controversial chemical tanks that no one but a select few saw coming. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said this week the three-party talks will continue at the end of this month. A deadline of March 31 is in place to get this port issue wrapped up, but sources indicate an extension is being drafted so that talks can continue into April. It’s not a sign of any trouble – more like an indication progress is being made and the process should continue to its rightful conclusion. If the talks fail, the federal government will retain ownership of the harbour land, and presumably begin a process to sell it off to the highest bidder. In the meantime the city is working to harmonize the zoning in that area, in an effort to protect the property from further development as a manufacturing centre. The city wants to see things like a playground, parkland, docks for pleasure craft and maybe even a residential component for that property. The problem that permeates this issue is that specifics are about as easy to find as a mercuryfree Lancaster perch. We still don’t know how long it will take to get those tanks out of the ground after a deal is signed. Ditto the length of time it will take to clean up the area, who will pay for it and when meaningful development will begin. A sliver of news came when municipal planning manager Ken Bedford said the city is looking long-term, perhaps as much as 20 years down the road, as it begins the process of zoning changes in the region.
In a nutshell, it could be several years before the Cornwall harbour begins to take on the grand design people like Groupe Renaissance Group stalwart Chuck Charlebois had in mind when they began pushing for a new look to this area - the place where the seeds of our city were sown. I had hoped, and even believed, I would see such a spectacle in my lifetime. Now, I’m not so sure. Government often moves in two speeds… slow and reverse. With three bureaucratic levels to deal with at this point, including city hall, our friends in Akwesasne and those guys in Ottawa not to mention a slew of unanswered questions looming on the horizon I wonder if we’re in for
a long wait. Later this year will already mark the third (!) anniversary since news broke on those tanks. Hopefully by then we’ll have some answers about their future – and the future of an integral part of Cornwall’s waterfront.
BROKEN HIP I know he reads our weekly offerings religiously (said with tongue planted firmly in cheek) but I just wanted to offer best wishes to a personal hero of mine, the indomitable Red Fisher, a sports writer for the Montreal Gazette. Fisher, who at 89 can write circles around the rest of us, broke his hip during a fall recently. Get better Red.
LETTERS Editor: Purely by accident I discovered a wonderful performance from Teatro de lascala, Milan, being shown at the Cineplex cinema in Cornwall on Sunday afternoon, March 20th. What disturbed me was the few people who knew about it. There were eight patrons who sat through a two-hour performance by Jonas
Kauffman performing Puccini arias. It was a magical performance which, had there been some advertising, would have been a lot better attended. I am sure the patrons who come regularly to the HD operas from the Met must not have known anything about this outstanding performance. It seems to me that the management of the
movie complex cares little for a committed group of opera lovers who would have so enjoyed this rare afternoon of magnificent music. When I looked around the lobby, there was no mention of this on the billboards and I had to ask the attendant if indeed there was a performance. At $15 per person, there is no way that paltry
sum would cover the expense of bringing this performance to the movie house. Hopefully the Cineplex management will see fit to a commitment of PR and advertising and bring more of the HD performances to Cornwall which, I am sure would be well attended if the public knew about them. Alison Troop, Cornwall

Terrible stretch of bad news in the 1960s Claude McIntosh
1932 he was a student at the University of Southern California. McNaughton died in Austin, Texas. He was 87. TRIVIA: On Feb. 15, 1965, RCMP officer Joseph Secours, of Cornwall, took part in this nationally televised ceremony on Parliament Hill. On the same day, similar ceremonies were performed throughout the country. Bonus point for the RCMP officer’s role in the ceremony. HERE AND THERE: According to a Cornwall Community Police Service media release, a 15-yearold city student was charged with assault after shaking his fist at a teacher. There was a day when that sort of classroom behaviour would have been taken care of without calling the police. But the rules of engagement have been changed in the school system. ... One of the tools police have in combating drunk driving that didn’t exist 20 years ago is the wide use of cell phones. Not unusual for police to receive tip of a suspected drunk driver from a cell phone user. And sometimes it comes from someone inside a bar ratting out somebody they don’t like. SPORTS STUFF: Both the semi-professional River Kings and junior Colts are done for the season. The question is will they be sharing the LumDome next season? The Colts will be back. But there is a big “if” hanging over the River Kings who had a box office cash flow problem. An announced crowd of under 700 for a playoff game in a league with team payrolls that come in at around $7,500 a game - home and away - just doesn’t cut it. ... In his first season as an Ontario Hockey League head coach, Dale Hawerchuk’s Barrie Colts won just 15 games and finished dead last. In the next five seasons his win record has raced past the loss mark. His record has climbed to 220 wins against 167 losses.

OPINION IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR The year was 1958. Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Germany. Ricky Nelson’s “Poor Little Fool” reached the top of the charts and was getting a lot of play on CKSF radio where Johnny Larocque was the popular morning host. “Bridge Over the River Kwai”, which won the Oscar for best movie, was playing at the Palace Theatre where theatre cop Herbie Montpetit maintained “law and order”. Truman Capote’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” was a best seller. Gunsmoke, The Phil Silvers Show, The Dinah Shore Show and Jack Benny won Emmys. Daytime television had game shows called “Beat the Clock” and “Strike it Rich”. ... Most members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 were WW2 and Korean veterans. ... The life expectancy of a Canadian male was 69.6 years. Ash trays were popular retirement gifts. ... The average yearly household income was $4,650. There were more stay-at-home moms than those who worked outside the home. Families bought potatoes in 50-pound bags. The new Ford Motor Co. Edsel was on display at the Miller-Hughes dealership. The first Pizza Hut opened in Kansas City but in Cornwall Zappia’s Pizzeria on Brookdale Avenue was where you went for a pizza, while Ma Lalonde’s on Pitt Street was flipping more burgers, at 10¢ each, than anywhere else in town. In the east end, Ruest’s had the best perch rolls on the planet. Pepsi was bottled - in glass bottles - at a plant at Pitt and Eighth streets. Coca-Cola was bottled at the Coke plant on Amelia Street, just up the street from Central Park which had the city’s only public swimming pool. The cheapest (10 ¢) large bottle of pop was called Kik Cola. ... Family TV entertainment included “The Flying Nun”, “F Troop”, “Hogan’s Heroes” and the “Brady Bunch”. The loss of 10 young Cornwall lives in three separate traffic accidents in a span of less than four years in the 1960s was staggering. The victims ranged in age from 14 to 20. In one of the accidents, which claimed four lives, the oldest was 18. In a terrible twist of fate, two young members of one family were victims in two of the accidents just two years apart. For city police officers, it meant knocking on 10 doors to deliver the tragic news. It is part of the job police officers dread. On March 26, 1967, Cornwall residents woke up on Easter Sunday morning to the news that three young city residents had been killed in a horrific overnight two-car crash near Massena. In all, six young people died in the crash. The sole survivor, the 21-year-old driver of the second vehicle, Joe Maston, a well-known Massena radio announcer, was critically injured. His two 16-year-old female passengers, Mary Ashley and Anne Tricase, both Massena high school friends, were killed. The Cornwall victims, all popular among their peers and regarded as great kids with bright futures, were Susan Cameron, 17, Ann King, 19, and Bill Lavigne, 20, who played football at St. Lawrence High School before graduating. They were passengers in a car driven by 18-yearold Norwood, N.Y. resident Brian LaFleur. Just about every young person in Cornwall knew at least one of the local victims. The tragedy pulled a heavy veil of grief over the community, particularly among young people. There was no such thing as grief counselling. New York State Police described the roadway as icy at the time of the crash. According to police, the LaFleur vehicle spun out of control and slid sideways into the approaching Maston car which didn’t have time to brake or swerve. Troopers said alcohol was not a factor. It
was one of the deadliest road accidents in St. Lawrence County history. Lavigne’s father, L.G. “Archie” Lavigne, was a former mayor of Cornwall. For Ann King’s mother, a widow, it was the second time in two years that she lost a child in a traffic accident. A son, Gerry, was killed in a crash on Vincent Massey Drive, along with two teen friends, in the summer of 1965. The three pals - age 20, 19 and 17 - were returning from a day at Long Sault beach. The car crashed head-on with a tractortrailer while trying to pass a line of east-bound traffic. The terrible string of multi-fatalities involving young city residents started on Nov. 8, 1963. Four city teens (ages 18, 16, 15, 14) were killed when the station wagon they were in was struck by a CN freight train at the level crossing on Brookdale Avenue. Incredibly, the crossing, despite Brookdale being a link to Highway 401, was not equipped with gates. A month after the accident a coroner’s jury called on authorities to take “immediate” steps to erect gates or an overpass at the crossing. Years later, an overpass was constructed. The train’s crew testified that the station wagon did not have its lights on. The impact was of such force that the wreckage, wrapped around the front of the locomotive engine, was pushed all the way to the Pitt Street overpass. TRIVIA ANSWER: Cornwall native Duncan McNaughton won a gold medal in the high jump for Canada at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. To this day, it is the only gold medal Canada has won in the Olympic Games high jump. In 1933 the gold medal was stolen from McNaughton’s car. It was never found. McNaughton’s family moved to British Columbia from Cornwall where he attended high school. In

En étouffant la concurrence, ils détruisent l’innovation et l’amélioration des services aux consommateurs et c’est le marché qui en souffre», a mentionné John Pecman, commissaire de la concurrence. that slide from left to right or both ways • hung window: two superimposed frames that slide upwards • casement window: opens with a crank • awning window: the frame pivots up and down Comfort: The insulation a window provides is a major factor where the overall comfort of your home is concerned. Consumers can choose double or triple glazing. With triple glazing, the third glass panel reduces heat loss even more and reduces condensation and noise. The air between the layers of glass is a good insulator, but sometimes gas (krypton or argon) is inserted between the panes to provide better insulation.

Price: Energy Star products are certified as the most energy efficient. They may be a bit more expensive, but you’ll save at least 10 percent on your heating costs. Doors and windows must be installed level, plumb, and square. This work should be done carefully, ideally by a qualified carpenter. Also, many companies, whether manufacturers or retailers, install the doors and windows they sell. They tend to ensure the job is done well, as their reputation depends on it. Poorly installed doors and windows can cause heat loss, be difficult to open, cause water infiltration, and other additional expenses. Dealing with professionals is always well worth the extra cost.

However, this effect diminishes over time, as the gas eventually escapes. A low emission (low-E) coating can be added to the window. This coating comes in the form of a low-emissivity film, which lets the sun’s rays in but prevents heat from escaping. You should also check the spacers that separate the two or three panes of glass. The spacers surround the windows and make them waterproof. It is important to ensure that they have low conductivity, or, in other words, that they are non-metallic. These inserts help to reduce condensation at the bottom of the windows and prevent the glass from becoming excessively cold. Weather-stripping seals both doors and windows against rain and dust and minimizes air leaks in moving joints.

Changing doors and windows is one of a home owner’s biggest maintenance investments, apart from replacing a roof. Style, comfort, and price are the three determining factors when it comes to choosing new doors and windows. Style: Firstly, let the overall style of your home guide you. If the house has a rustic look, you may want to opt for windows with small panes. If your house has stone siding and natural materials prevail, you’ll probably prefer wood. And lastly, if you have a modern home, you’ll probably want to focus on metallic or coloured finishes. The model of window has an impact on the look: • sliding window: two superimposed frames
The old custom of hanging a carpet on a clothesline and beating the dirt out can break the carpet’s backing. Use a vacuum instead. Vacuum carpets at least once per week. To remove as much dirt as possible, move the vacuum over the carpet slowly and make several passes over each area. Work in overlapping parallel strokes. Pay special attention to areas in front of couches and chairs.

Restaurant Week returns to Cornwall and South Glengarry from April 5-9. Check out the Spring 2016 edition’s mouth-watering lineup at www.seawayfoodfestival.ca Despite the fact that the Cornwall Colts (CCHL) didn’t make the playoffs for the first time in years and the Cornwall River Kings (LNAH) were quickly eliminated in the first round, both squads deserve a standing ovation from local hockey fans. Until next season! When’s the last time you visited the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area in Lancaster?

MAN OF THE HOUSE
The husband had finished his book, “Man Of The House,” by the time he reached home. He stormed into the house and walked directly up to his wife, pointing a finger in her face. He said, ‘From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I’m finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert afterward. Then you are going to make love with me where, when and how I tell you to! Then, after that, you’re going to draw me my bath so I can relax - and, when I’m finished with my bath, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?’ His wife responded, ‘The Funeral Director..”

I wonder how many people called in sick on March 18th? It’s never too early to start thinking gardening. A pesticide-free backyard won’t dash your dreams of a beautiful oasis. There are plenty of ways to keep your garden healthy while avoiding the use of harmful chemicals: • Do choose plants native to your area, because they evolved with local wildlife they have natural defences against it. • Do keep your garden soil healthy by adding compost and well-aged manure. These are better than chemical fertilizers. • Don’t stick to the same old plants. Many pests eat only certain plants. Growing a diversity of plants minimizes your garden’s susceptibility to any pest invasion. • Do use non-chemical methods, such as hand picking pests, using plant barriers or setting insect traps. • Do welcome insect predators such as birds, toads, snakes, spiders or bats to your garden by providing shelter, water and supplemental food sources. • Do your research. Take advantage of natural aversion of pests to certain plants by adding them to your garden. Mint, garlic, cloves, nasturtiums, lavender, sage and thyme repel pest insects. • Don’t water in the evening. Damp leaves in the evening can lead to fungus and other diseases.

Pet Tip of the Week: Every year across Canada, tens of thousands of healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized because there are not enough adoptive homes available. Help reduce pet overpopulation and support your local animal shelter. • Spay or neuter your pet. • Donate or volunteer at your local animal shelter. • Adopt a new pet from your local shelter. • Spread the spay/neuter message to family, friends and colleagues. If you’re visiting city hall in the future stop by Diane Brown’s desk and ask her about that beautiful new puppy she and her husband Alan have recently acquired. “Greysea” is quite the little looker. Congratulations, guys!
Every dog has its day. Kudos to the SD&G SPCA for hosting a free parvovirus vaccination clinic on March 19.
