New look for Brookdale Avenue comes with more traffic delays Todd Lihou
todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario – Big plans are in the works for a new-look Brookdale Avenue – but it’s going to come at the cost of traffic delays…again. Glenn Hewus, vice-president of engineering with Engineering and Construction of Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, told city councillors Monday night the work is scheduled to be completed by the middle of December – and Brookdale is slated to be closed for about half that time. “For the most part about 50 per cent of the time the roadway would be closed,” he said. “But we could make accommodations for local traffic.” The improvements to Brookdale Avenue
include straightening the road, adding new water and sewer infrastructure and trees, as well as a bicycle path. The work is expected to cost about $7.4 million, with the bridge corporation paying $4.8 million, and the city forking over the balance. The work was initially slated to cost $10 million. Local contractor Bray Construction has been tapped to complete the work. Hewus also told councillors the bridge piers that remain in the St. Lawrence River are scheduled to be torn down, but a portion will remain just above the surface of the water – perhaps by as much as two metres. Hewus suggested the bridge corporation is Brookdale Avenue. Coun. Elaine MacDonald floated the notion that The reconstruction work is expected to begin at the city could provide some options to the bridge open to suggestions about the piers – but time is the south end of Brookdale near Water Street and becoming a factor. corporation concerning the future use of the piers, move north to the traffic circle near Seventh Street. Councillors were receptive to the new look for including an area to display artwork.

Green thumbs get down and dirty for ‘Bark & Compost Day’ Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ont. – Eleven years later, and the Cornwall & District Horticultural Society is still digging deep to help beautify the community. Hundreds flocked to the annual ‘Bark & Compost Day’ on Saturday (May 7), helping raise over $3,000, with funds being matched by Scotiabank, for the local non-profit, also known as Friends of the Garden. The compost, produced at the landfill site located at 2590 Cornwall Centre Road West, is from city residents’ leaf and yard waste collected at the curbside. After a year and a half, a chemical analysis is conducted and the compost is ready
to use. Wood mulch and compost sold for $3 a bag, or $25 for a backhoe scoop ($15 for each additional). The funds raised from Bark & Compost Day, in partnership with the City of Cornwall, go towards the society’s monthly meetings and special events, including community gardening at a number of venues around the city, donations of tulip bulbs for the cenotaph, and container gardens given to local senior residences, planting at Habitat for Humanity homes, Cornwall Hospice, Living Wall at the Cornwall Public Library, and cash donations and support to Seaway Valley Community Health Centre’s Community Gardens and The Children’s Treatment Centre.

CORNWALL, Ont. – And the winners are... The inaugural ‘Canstruction’ Cornwall competition at the Benson Centre (April 15-30) raised over 12,000 cans and $1,300 for the Agape Centre. The food bank-community kitchen hosted an awards ceremony at the Best Western Inn on Thursday (May 5) to celebrate the competition’s success. “Canstruction was a huge success,” said Alyssa Blais, executive director for the Agape. “We wanted it at the Benson Centre because there’s so much activity there and it dovetailed nicely with CAPE. We’re going to hopefully do the same next year.” All six teams dreamed up a concept, designed it, fundraised to purchase hundreds to thousands of cans, then built the structures in less than 12 hours. “Can we double it next year?” the chair of the board of directors of the local food bank, Jim Healey, asked the audience. “Yes we can!” the crowd of 70-plus replied. Blais said four new teams have already signed up for the 2017 edition. The large haul of canned food items is already helping fill the Agape’s shelves, at a time of year when donations are very low. “It’s hard to understand what it really means to be giving away 1,000 cans of food a week,” said Healey. “When people can look at a giant structure built using 1,500 cans, and know that

Lowe’s officially opens with ‘board cutting’ at Cornwall store Todd Lihou
todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Lowes opened its 43rd store in Canada last Thursday with a board cutting at its new Brookdale Avenue locale in Cornwall. Dozens of dignitaries from local government and agencies attended the opening, which continued all weekend with customer incentives and an interactive autograph signing session with HGTV’s Bryan Baeumler.
“We’re thrilled to be here in Cornwall,” said Lowes vice-president of supply chain management Gregor Stuart. Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy welcomed the home improvement giant with a tongue-in-cheek suggestion he may be looking for a new line of work. “I’ll be submitting my resume by noon today,” he said to laughter, and then added for the benefit of Stuart: “We have space available for a new distribu-

tion centre here in Cornwall.” As part of the festivities Thursday a $10,000 cheque from the company was provided to the local Habitat for Humanity office, to help offset the cost of building homes for those in need. The cheque was accepted by Leigh Taggart, Habitat for Humanity executive director. Customers were invited to free home improvement sessions, giveaways and contests throughout the four-day event. Free $25 gift cards were provided to the first 200 customers on May 8. The store represents an approximate local investment in excess of $16 million and has created approximately 120-140 jobs, and additional 30-40 seasonal position s.
Lowes store manager Chris Boggs and Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy cut the board to officially open the Cornwall store.

*Actual amount may vary. **Targeted monthly distribution rates are based on the net asset value per unit of a fund as at the fund’s previous yearend. Target distributions are not guaranteed and may change at any time at the discretion of the fund’s Manager. If distributions paid by the fund are greater than the performance of the fund, distributions paid may include a return of capital and an investor’s original investment will shrink. A return of capital is not taxable to the investor, but will generally reduce the adjusted cost base of the securities held for tax purposes. If the adjusted cost base falls below zero, investors will realize capital gains equal to the amount below zero. Distributions are automatically reinvested unless an investor elects to receive them in cash. Investors should not confuse a fund’s distribution rate with its performance, rate of return or yield. CORNWALL, Ontario – There will be a modicum of control when it comes to busking that will be allowed on Pitt Street this summer. Buskers will have to register with city hall and won’t be able to monopolize a specific area of Pitt Street, instead they will move up and down the busy downtown area. The rules came as good news to some city councillors who were concerned about having too many performers requesting a particular location. “You better have someone (looking at that) or the next phone call you’ll get is to the police department,” said Coun. Andre Rivette. Economic development manager Marc Boileau told councillors there will be some rules to follow. “They’re trying to ensure there is a process, so it’s just anyone who is setting up,” he said. “We are going to review the applications; I don’t expect it

to be a lengthy process. “It’s really just a process to ensure there is some order on the street.” But Coun. Elaine MacDonald was also concerned about a groundswell of buskers looking to fill up Pitt Street. “I’m still not clear on who will be the point person on the city level. What sort of process will we have so we don’t have people competing?” she said. Boileau was once again unconcerned. “If we have a numbers problem it will be good problem,” he said. “Perhaps we’ll have to review the bylaw. But I think we’re going to be trying to attract as many buskers as possible. “I don’t anticipate there will be a problem.” Clerk Helen Finn said buskers will be on a rotation and will have to move to different areas of Pitt Street following a couple of hours of performing. Councillors will officialy approve of downtown buskers by way of a bylaw at their next meeting. The performances will take place on Pitt Street between Fourth and Water streets.

Kim Baird, president of the local Cystic Fibrosis chapter, said the event is moving away from the ‘Great Strides’ moniker the event used for years. In 2015 the event raised $6,000 for cystic

fibrosis research and support services. “We’re hoping to at least match that again this year,” said Baird. About a dozen people in SD and G have identified themselves as CF sufferers. Baird added the number could be more, as only those who have allowed their diagnosis to be shared can be identified as such. The cystic fibrosis walk registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk itself follows at 11 a.m. A ‘kid zone’ and barbecue lunch is included. Individuals and teams can register. For more information contact Baird (613-933-5851) or Sue (613-937-3080).

Williamstown native describes Fort McMurray chaos the most part, a special breed when it comes to helping people in need. “We really didn’t have anything. We had to go to Edmonton to get clothes for the kids. Every single person in every town, everywhere we go, is taking care of us. You’re getting deals on everything,” he said, adding his employers are paying workers at their regular rate despite the fact that no work is being done. “Bootleggers in Red Deer gave us 75 per cent off. Hotel rooms for free. People taking in strangers. The insurance company has been super supportive and our company gave us extra money to cope with everything. “It’s amazing. I never ever thought we would see anything like this. I have friends that escaped the fire…and drove straight to Edmonton and grabbed like 30 jerry cans of fuel and water and snacks and went back to help people stranded on the highway.” Flaro, a heavy equipment operator for Syncrude, said he was working nights and asleep when the call to evacuate Fort McMurray arrived
CORNWALL, Ontario – Matt Flaro’s Fort McMurray home survived a massive wildfire last week – but only just barely. The Williamstown native who moved out west a few years ago to pursue work on the oil patch found himself receiving conflicting reports about the status of his Draper Road home, before a neighbour who also happens to be a firefighter told him Tuesday it was still standing. “It burned in front of my place,” said Flaro in an interview from Alberta where he has found refuge with the family of his girlfriend in Rocky Mountain House. “It burned half way up my yard. It was hot enough that it emptied my propane tank that was full.” Real-time satellite images appear to show that the fire just missed his home – but he won’t know for sure how severe any damage is for several weeks as emergency officials won’t let anyone back to Fort McMurray until it is safe. What he does know is that Canadians are, for

May 3 in the mid-afternoon. By the time he got word that the city was being cleared Flaro took off north of the city in his pick-up truck on Highway 63 because the route south was blocked. His girlfriend Christina Laboucane, stepson Brayden and daughter Austyn were camping with their mom south of the city at the time. Flaro said he drove to an oil worker camp and spent part of the night there, while his family huddled in the campsite dozens of kilometres away. At about 1 a.m. he piled into his truck again and took off south to try and reach his family. “I drove back through all the fires. The wind had died down and it had suppressed the fire a bit,” he said, but added during the day things were different. “It was just chaos. People were driving down into the ditch to try to get on the highway. “There was just abandoned cars everywhere. Thousands of cars. It was like The Walking Dead. It was just mayhem.” He finally arrived at the campsite and had a tearful reunion with his family. Since then he has moved in with his girlfriend’s stepfather, and desperately wants to return to work. “To work for those companies is a godsend. Those guys are backing us 100 per cent,” he said. But Flaro has other words for government officials, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom he feels has turned his back to Canadians in need. “Trudeau is an idiot. He’s not even coming up here. It’s mass destruction up here. I can’t believe how scared and nervous people are,” said Flaro. “He should be here supporting us.”
Matt Flaro and his girlfriend Christina Laboucane. Trudeau has been criticized for rebuffing international offers of support to help battle the out-of-control wildfires, and for not yet visiting the community. “Trudeau has helped out more refugees than Canadians,” Flaro said. “Even the banks have all deferred payments. They’re backdating mortgages for up to four months. “They (politicians) should be there supporting us 150 per cent.” Fort McMurray’s hospital, city hall and strip malls were all left untouched, thanks to the work of firefighters who put up a 12-hour battle to douse flames. In all, 2,400 structures were destroyed, but another 25,000 buildings remain. Including Flaro’s home. “It’s unreal. I can’t believe the strangers and how everyone came together. I’ve never seen that kind of compassion.”

Trudeau trip to Fort McMurray may be too little, too late Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
I was asked this week why I haven’t written more about the devastating wildfires in Fort McMurray. To tell the truth, as a local newspaper we’ve been trying to find a connection to this tragedy that really brings it home for our readers. This week we found it, in the guise of Matt Flaro, a Williamstown native who now makes his home in Fort McMurray as an oil worker. To hear Flaro tell the story puts an exclamation point on the devastation in parts of Fort McMurray. Flaro still has a house in the fire-ravaged community – but only just barely. The flames scorched much of the land around his home, and was so hot it emptied a propane tank on his property. Flaro said his heart goes out to his employer Syncrude (who is continuing to pay him), his insurance company, friends, family and strangers who have come to the aid of Fort McMurray residents in a terrible time of need. He has less favourable words for people in government – and so do I. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s PR machine was taking a well-deserved beating earlier this week, as critics levelled accusations at the foot of the rookie head of state. Trudeau Liberals got plenty of support months ago in this space, when it was suggested that Canada (and Cornwall) should be doing more to help refugees from far off places like Syria who need our help and a place to live. But now, when rank and file Canadians are
being evacuated from their homes, where is the prime minister? It’s a question many in Fort McMurray were starting to ask. The answer came, finally, Tuesday afternoon when Trudeau told the House of Commons he would visit Fort McMurray Friday. The answer from many falls somewhere between “It’s about time” and “Finally.” Flaro was fairly brief in his description of Trudeau, going as far as suggesting our leader is “an idiot.” It could just be the frustration of being evacuated from his home boiling to the surface, but now that it appears as though the city has been spared, it’s obviously time for Trudeau to take his smile and charm out west. From this desk, in the relative safety of Cornwall where the only wildfires we have to deal with come via an out-of-control charcoal barbecue, it’s becoming clear that more from the federal government is required in the days and weeks ahead. Throwing more money at the problem may help some get over the hump, but action speaks louder than dollars. No one could balk at a prime minister who days ago suggested it wasn’t the right time to plan a visit. Then the fire was still bearing down on the city and there were genuine fears about Fort McMurray’s ultimate survival. Now those fears have subsided and anger is starting to boil to the surface. For a guy like Matt Flaro, who only wants to return to his home and go to work, suggesting the prime minister is an idiot tells you about the sentiment bubbling away below the surface in Fort McMurray.
These are proud, hard-working people who got caught in a natural disaster. They aren’t asking for a handout – but they are asking for some respect. They deserve it. NOW I KNOW WHAT AKWESASNE FEELS LIKE Don’t make the same mistake I made last week. After returning to Cornwall from Massena, N.Y. my wife and I stopped on Cornwall Island to gas up, before ultimately arriving at the Port of Entry in the city. “Where are you arriving from?” “Massena.” “What did you do there?” “Picked up some coffee whitener.” “Total value?” “$2…and we bought some gas on Cornwall
Island.” “Was that on your way over, or your way back?” “The way back.” And that’s when we got hauled into the CBSA office at the port of entry for a small lecture on the rules when returning to Canada. No stopping on Cornwall Island. Ever. Apparently there are signs on the island telling travellers to proceed directly to the port. I’m sure they’re big enough, but to be honest I’ve never seen them. And now I know what it is like for people living on Cornwall Island who have to report to the CBSA whenever they re-enter the country. There are cameras in place on the island to watch over the actions of motorists, we were told…so don’t make the same mistake I made.
LETTERS Editor: I am disappointed in Dr. Roumeliotis and Dr. Cooney’s presentation to City Council. (As per published reports) Dr. Roumeliotis said fluoride was okayed by Health Canada, when Health Canada never tested Fluorosilicic acid. He also said that poor children have the worst dental hygiene. As of January 1st 2016, the Ministry of Health has rolled out a Healthy Smiles Program (check on line), whereby children in lower income homes are eligible for free dental care.
Why did Dr. Roumeliotis not bring this up at his presentation ? The program is supposed to be rolled out from the Health Units! Dr. Cooney also twisted some facts, as Europe in general does not fluoridate the drinking water. They just do not. There are products sold with fluoride, for those who want it. He also said people should install filters to remove fluoride from their water. Well, Dr. Cooney there are no filters to remove fluoride.
The only way to remove fluoride is by reverse osmosis system, not a simple filter. The next questionnable fact was being told that twenty area dentists signed a petition to bring fluoride back. Surely dentists would know the difference between stannous fluoride (which they use),(pharmaceutical grade), and fluorosilicic acid from chimney scrubbers. Then, front page of the Freeholder on Wed. April 27, a picture of Councillor Elaine MacDonald, with the caption “
Justice at last”. A champion regarding workplace safety. She advocates safe working environments for all workers, but won’t help City of Cornwall workers stop handling fluorosilicic acid at the treatment plant ? The only consideration for citizens and Councillors, is that it definitely harms the rest of our bodies. Paul Brisebois Cornwall

belted out a favourite Elvis tune that brought back memories. Jackson had a generous heart, too. He donated his time and talent to numerous local charitable causes. “He was a good person,” said city councillor Andre Rivette, a musician in his younger days. Tim Hortons franchise owners Tim and Mike Moyer recall Jackson donating his act to help raise money on camp day, which helped send an local underprivileged child to summer camp. “A special man,” the couple penned on the obituary condolence page. Alfred Kloos, a TJ fan, recalled the singer performing at Lorneville Apartments and donating the money to charity. “Never saw anybody who put his whole heart into a performance like him,” the fan wrote. For Ron Begg, who interviewed Jackson on his Cogeco TV show, Jackson’s untimely death means there’s “a bright light now shining in the sky.” TJ Jackson’s generous heart gave out on him May 3 at The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus. There are Elvis tribute artists, some of whom are better suited for a comedy festival, and then there are Elvis tribute artists! TJ Jackson was the real deal ... with an exclamation mark. Born and raised in Akwesasne, Jackson was one of Canada’s best Elvis tribute artists. In some ways, he was more Elvis than The King himself in the last two years of his career. Jackson, a singer-songwriter, caught the “Elvis bug”, after he entered an Elvis tribute artist contest in 2006 “as a joke” at the posh Rolling Stone casino/resort in Verona, N.Y., wearing what he described as a “cheap” Elvis set of threads. Within a couple of years he was making a name for himself on the competitive Elvis tribute circuit, in Canada and the United States. And the “cheap” suit was replaced with the finest Elvis jumpsuits on the market, at $1,700 a pop. He painstakingly sewed accessories onto the suits. The summer Elvis tribute festival in Collingwood, Ont. is billed as the biggest of its kind in the world and Jackson was a regular fixture. His best showing, in a field of 144, that included some of the world’s best, Jackson placed second, a few weeks after he won the Tweed Elvis Festival. He always placed in the top 10 at Collingwood. Nobody enjoyed the role more than Jackson. He brought the wow factor to the stage. Not only was he a great singer but he was also a gifted entertainer who connected with his audiences. In an interview with the Seaway News three years ago, Jackson said what he enjoyed most was seeing eyes light up in the audience when he

It has to do with geography and your own style of play (ie, do you normally fade or draw). It’s rare to come across a course that is all flat or all straight. Courses are laid out with turns and hills and hazards, which makes the game what it is. A key to solid play is to use that geography to your advantage while teeing off. This tip begins even before you step up on the tee. As you’re walking toward that tee, look ahead and get a sense of the layout of the hole. Is it straight, is it a dogleg? Once you determine how the hole is laid out, look for that far away spot that you realisitically feel your tee shot can travel. In other words, where do you want the ball to land? When it’s your turn to tee up, keep in mind that you do not have to place your tee in the center of the tee markers. You are allowed to use whatever room there is there and it’s important that you do this. If you watch the pros, you’ll see they take the time to survey the hole and the teeing area.
They will “see” where they want their ball to land on the fairway, and then they will tee up in an area that will help them reach that target using their natural swing and ball path. Say, for example, that your natural golf shot is a fade. On most holes you should tee the ball up on the right side of the tee box, fairly close to the right side tee marker. If you then aim at the the left side of the fairway your fade will bring the ball to the middle of the fairway. If for some reason you hit the ball straight, you will finish on the left hand edge of the fairway. If, however, your fade turns into a slice you should still end up on the right edge of the fairway. Either way, you should still have a shot to the green. Having that shot to the green, no matter how your ball flies, is crucial to lowering your score, hole by hole. In fact, this one little tip when used properly can shave as many a 8 or 9 strokes off the average player’s score (on 18 holes). As with everything in golf, this takes a little getting used to, but it’s certainly worth the effort. It will also give you an enormous boost to your confidence when you play a new course for the first time as this tip works everywhere.

CORNWALL, Ont. – Cue the Rocky theme music – the grueling training schedule has begun. Cornwall Coun. David Murphy is preparing to step into the ring with Boom 101.9 host Dan Allaire at Champs East Side Boxing Club’s annual ‘Boxing for Change’ fundraising event at the Nav Centre in May 2017. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Treatment Centre (CTC) and the non-profit club. For two months, Allaire, 42, and Murphy, 43, have been training together, three days a week, at Champs with head coach/owner Jorge Luis and coach Matt Veenstra. Cornwall pro boxer Tony ‘Lightning’ Luis, Jorge’s son, will be special guest referee at the annual event. “I’ve been wanting to punch Murph in the face for 20 years,” joked Allaire, an orthodox puncher. To which Murphy, a southpaw, replied: “Now he’s going to get to do it for charity.” The amateur fight is fueled by a friendly rivalry and a shared passion for volunteering,
but Allaire takes the cause to heart. His dad, Richard Allaire, was on the CTC board of directors. The passed away a year-and-a-half ago after a lengthy battle with cancer “I have him on my mind every time I train,” Dan said. The 2017 Boxing for Change event will feature a full-course dinner, drinks, entertainment, and several rounds of amateur boxing. Guests will also be able to wager on the fight with all proceeds going to the local causes. Who do you think will win? “This is a chance for me to showcase boxing and what we do here,” Jorge said. “I take it seriously – I take a lot of pride in what we do here. I want them to do it with respect for the sport and for themselves. I want them to get fit and learn how to box. I don’t care who wins or loses – I want them to put on a good show and not be a circus. That was the deal. I said you guys are going to have to train and put in the time and the work.” More details about the event will be released in the upcoming months. For more information, visit www.champsboxing.com.

Important considerations for women regarding oral health Dr. Steven Deneka It’s common knowledge that fluctuating hormones can create numerous changes in the body, but it may come as a surprise that women can encounter different issues when it comes to the health of their mouths than men do. In fact, being able to connect the dots between symptoms and underlying causes during different stages of life can help women be more proactive about their oral health. Beginning with puberty, chemical changes in the body can cause some girls to experience instances of redness, bleeding and swelling of the gums, increasing potential to suffer from
and dry mouth. Managing risk of osteoperosis leading into menopause is also an important consideration, not only for bone health but to help avoid tooth loss as well. Though women may experience unique oral health issues due to changing hormones, visiting a dentist long-term can help identify changes throughout various stages of life and help manage symptoms before they become problems.
is born, routine check-ups are essential since untreated gum infections have been linked to low birth weight or premature births. Some pregnant women experience dry mouth due to changing hormones that can be managed through increased water intake or by chewing sugarless gum. It’s also common for gums to bleed during pregnancy, and regular brushing and flossing will help avoid infection. Always let your dental team know if you are pregnant so they can help choose the best treatment for you and your baby. Menopause too can cause shifts in a woman’s mouth, ranging from pain and burning sensations in the gums or palate to changes in taste
gingivitis. It’s important to continue building healthy habits with regular flossing and brushing to ward off infection. Unfortunately, certain women experience canker sores each month according to their menstral cycle. Aside from the annoyance of reoccurance, cankers can be painful. Rinsing with salt water and avoiding acidic or spicy foods can help with pain management. While canker sores often resolve on their own, your dentist may have suggestions to help with cankers that are particularly bothersome. There’s a persistent myth that pregnant women should avoid the dentist. While elective dental procedures can wait until after the baby

OFFER INCLUDES $1,790 IN FREIGHT AND AIR TAX
CORNWALL, Ontario – The argument concerning water fluoridation has gone political, and does not address safety concerns at Cornwall water filtration plant, the union representing operators at the facility has said. Alan Armstrong, president of CUPE local 3251, told Seaway News in an interview Thursday the general public is missing out on a major component of the debate. “This thing was something that started as a health and safety issue and it kind of morphed into the pros and cons of the fluoride issue,” he said. “And it’s become a very political topic.” Indeed city council has heard from two groups, both for and against the fluoridation of Cornwall’s drinking water. The union has significant concerns with the use of hydrofluorosilic acid (HFSA), the toxic compound added to the water to create fluoride. The union had asked to make a similar presentation to city council, but was turned down because such a move would have been against procedural bylaws. City councillors, by way of a two-thirds vote, could have overridden the bylaw – but no such move took place. “We’re not questioning fluoridation or its benefits,” said Armstrong. “What we’re questioning is HFSA. It’s a serious hazard to the workplace.” Health Canada and Environment Canada have published warnings related to the acid, and even city environmental services manager has deemed HFSA an extremely dangerous product, by way of a report to councillors. Should council vote to return to water fluoridation, workers at the plant will have to be retrained on how to properly administer HFSA to the water supply. Health concerns at the plant three years ago forced the city to abandon the practice. Workers will likely have to wear hazmat suits, and operate in containment rooms, should HFSA use return. There are still some 15,000 litres of the acid in storage at the treatment plant, and Armstrong said the product has no business in the city now, or in the future. “It comes in by transport,” he said. “What if there’s an accident? “Right now the morale is pretty low, with these guys,. They’re really concerned with this. You can put all the measures in place that you want, but there’s always going to be that chance of error. Whether it’s a mechanical breakdown or human error.” Armstrong also sounded the warning on potential costs for taxpayers. While the city has set aside money to cover the $350,000 cost expected to fix the issues at the plant, should water fluoridation resume, there is still a $50,000 annual cost associated with the practice. And Armstrong said anyone who thinks the upgrades will only cost $350,000 is dreaming. “If you look at the costs that are going to be involved and the extent of things they will have to do, that’s a red flag,” he said. “Regardless of how you fund this, the taxpayer pays for it. If they pull it out of reserves…they have to pay that back. Water bills are going to have no choice but to go up.” Proponents of water fluoridation have said the health benefits far outwiegh other concerns. Medical officer of health Paul Roumeliotis recently told city councillors Cornwall is in dire need of fluoridated water.

With fresh east coast lobster filling up Cornwall and area grocery stores, it’s time to feast. Enjoy this simple recipe for grilled lobster tails. Serves 4 Ingredients: 2 (10 ounce) rock lobster tails 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 cup olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon paprika 1/8 teaspoon white pepper 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder Directions: Preheat grill for high heat. Squeeze lemon juice into a small bowl, and slowly whisk in olive oil. Whisk in salt, paprika, white pepper, and garlic powder. Split lobster tails lengthwise with a large knife, and brush flesh side of tail with marinade. Lightly oil grill grate. Place tails, flesh side down, on preheated grill. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once, and basting frequently with marinade. Discard any remaining marinade. Lobster is done when opaque and firm to the touch.

Where to begin? To see real progress fast, start with the areas that tend to go the fastest - the livingroom and dining rooms and the halls - they’re usually less cluttered and less dirty. Bedrooms would be next as they are usually more dusty then dirty. Entrance ways, kitchens and bathrooms are the more time consumming areas as they collect more dirt, moisture and cooking particles. Windows, patio doors including tracks and screens can be completed as a seperate job as this can be a time consuming task. No matter what area you start with, avoid redepositing dirt on the surface. Always use a clean solution. Mix up a new bucket of cleaner and water as soon as the first bucket becomes moderately dirty.

Our lives go on without you But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent the tears that fall, Living our hearts without you Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return When we were all together, But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever. Till we meet again. Loving you forever and always, Helen, André (JoAnn), Monique (Lawrence), Gilles (Nicole) and all your grandchildren

mayoral election, securing 1.3 million votes to defeat his Jewish opponent and multimillionaire Tory Zac Goldsmith. The 45-year-old Khan is the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver. His victory has been rightly described as a triumph of “unity over division.” Khan has a simple and striking message for all Londoners. He made it abundantly clear he won’t be merely a Muslim mayor but a leader for all. “They used fear and innuendo to try to turn different ethnic and religious groups against each other – something straight out of the Donald Trump playbook,” Khan wrote in a British newspaper.

anywhere else in the world. Such divisive campaigns cause lasting damage. One only has to look at the last federal election campaign fought in Canada. A record number of visible minorities were elected in Canada and several of them now occupy distinguished position in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. The mayoral campaign is another eye opener. The 45-year-old former human rights lawyer was elected as a Member of Parliament for Tooting in South London just 11 years ago and he rose quickly through the Lobour ranks. Khan won 57 per cent of the vote in the

Calgary was the first major Canadian city to elect a Muslim mayor during the “Purple Revolution” campaign in 2010. Naheed Nenshi easily won the hard-fought election despite a smear campaign. “Today Calgary is a different place than it was yesterday. A better place,” said Toronto-born Nenshi, whose parents came from Tanzania in East Africa. Now Sadiq Khan has been elected Mayor of London, England. This makes Khan, whose parents came from Pakistan, the most powerful Muslim politician in
the Western world. This mayoral campaign was bitterly fought in a hostile campaign. Khan won a stunning victory despite a smear campaign by Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party, which attempted to link the South Londoner to terrorism and extremists. There were claims that Khan could not be trusted to protect London’s 8.5 million inhabitants backfired spectacularly. After the campaign, many Conservatives openly admitted the divisive campaign drove voters away from the party. There is no need for such divisive campaign in Britain, Canada or

NO MORE BABY TALK
A group of kindergartners were trying to become accustomed to the first grade. The biggest hurdle they faced was that the teacher insisted on no baby talk. “You need to use ‘big people’ words,” she’d always remind them. She asked Chris what he had done over the weekend. “I went to visit my Nana.” “No, you went to visit your GRANDMOTHER. Use big people words!” She then asked Mitchell what he had done. “I took a ride on a choo-choo.” She said, “No, you took a ride on a TRAIN. Use big people words.” She then asked Bobby what he had done. “I read a book,” he replied. “That’s WONDERFUL!” the teacher said. “What book did you read?” Bobby thought about it, then puffed out his little chest with great pride and said, “Winnie the Sh*t.”
