Festival returns to downtown Cornwall just in thyme for planting season Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – Grab your garden gloves and head over to the Justice Building Plaza for the fourth annual Incredible Edible Plant Festival. The free event, founded by Transition Cornwall + Food Action Group, will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday (May 28), and will feature a vegetable plant give-away and a huge bouquet of free, family-centered activities hosted by members of the All Things Food Network. “For those new to gardening, we will have experienced gardeners at information tables, ready and eager to help you pick the right plant for your patio, step, or balcony,” said Bill Carriere of Transition Cornwall+ (a working group of the Cornwall Social Development Council). As in previous years, attendees will be invit-

ed to take home one of these free potted vegetable plant to try growing food at home. Carriere said over 400 cherry tomatoes, green beans, spinach, lettuce, and sweet pepper plants have been generously donated by TC+ Food Action Group and Marlin Orchards in preparation for the big event. Young and budding gardeners are invited to help Growing Up Organic, event partner, plant the downtown fire station and Justice Building community vegetable gardens. These gardens will provide free food for the surrounding neighbourhood throughout the summer. “This year we decided to also create a pollinator garden near the police station, which will help support butterflies and bees in our community,” said Kat Rendek, coordinator at All Things Food Network. The Incredible Edible Plant Festival will also

feature free gardening activities, cooking workshops, and live music being offered by event partners Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects, Early Years Centre, Seaway Valley Community Health Centre, and local musical artists. On-going activities include sunflower planting, garden crafts, sensory games, table top toys, and face-painting. “So you will want to bring a picnic and stay for the whole day,” said Rendek. In celebration of the Transition Cornwall+ Active Transportation Challenge (June 5-11), festival attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, roller blade, or bring strollers to the event. Bike and Stroller Valet Service will be available on site and monitored by members of the TC+ Active Transportation Group. For more information, visit transitioncornwall.com/food-action-group.

Blais steps down as Agape Centre executive director Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – After five and a half years, the Agape Centre is losing Alyssa Blais, who has stepped down as its executive director. “I set out to do something at Agape and I accomplished my goals,” Blais said in a media statement on Wednesday (May 11). “I feel like my time has come to an end, and I’m leaving it in great hands.” The executive director’s last day will be May 26, and the Agape Centre’s board members will announce “recruitment plans soon.” “Alyssa has provided stability and direction to the running of the Agape Centre that will be missed,” said Jim Healey, Agape board chair.

Blais, 44, plans on taking a sabbatical for six months to a year, and traveling to Newfoundland, Nepal, and Thailand. Kendra Smith, fund development and communications officer at Agape, said Blais significantly contributed to the organization’s success, notably overseeing an important shift within the non-profit towards improving the quality of food distributed, earning the Agape Centre formal recognition as a Good Food Organization. “I want people to recognize that we have hunger in our community and it’s not going to go away,” said Blais. “The Agape Centre is an important resource and service, and I want to see it at the forefront to alleviating poverty in this community.” She also planted a fruit forest, introduced a

kid’s cooking program called Curious Chefs, and brought two new fundraising events to the organization: Coldest Night of the Year and Canstruction Cornwall. Blais said her proudest accomplishment is the $1-million ‘Within These Walls’ building campaign, she and her team carried out last year, renovating the 27,000 square-foot building into a safer, more accessible space. “Working with Bourgon Construction, and seeing the progress of a crumbling building turning into a place where people can come and feel comfortable was something special,” said Blais. “There’s a sense of peace that wasn’t here before. We dusted off this building and made it into a beautiful and safe place. It’s our home and people are happier here now.”

Local family steps up to help young girl battling cancer CORNWALL, Ontario - A local family is helping to raise money for a Cornwall girl who is just five, yet battling cancer. Melissa Greer has scheduled a fundraiser for the family of Laycey Lafave, who is in the midst of cancer treatments following a leukemia diagnosis April 1. The fundraiser, set to take place May 20 from

MELISSA GREER

8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297, will feature a silent auction, light lunch and music from DJ Sound. The cost to enter is a $5 donation to the family. “I’m a mother of three, and to see a

five-year-old who is sick...I just can’t imagine,” said Greer. As Laycey undergoes chemotherapy treatment at CHEO, her parents have recognized that the Cornwall area eagerly takes care of its own. A GoFundMe page and several fundraising events have already taken place. “I’ve never seen a community come together like this so quickly,” said Shaun Lafave, the brave young girl’s father, told Seaway News. Lafave said symptoms started included back

pain and mimicked the flu. Laycey’s mother, Kayla Snyder, took her to the Cornwall Community Hospital for tests, which indicated she had a low red blood cell count. With chemotherapy, childhood leukemia now has a survival rate in the range of 90 per cent. For more information visit www.gofundme.com/fight4laycey and join LACEY LAFAVES FIGHTgroup on Facebook.

AMAZING ROTARY RALLY: Scavenger hunting for charity Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – It’s a three-peat for Team ScaFUNgers. The foursome - Nancy Paquette, her boyfriend, Russel Racine, sister, Melanie Paquette, and brother-in-law, Justin Wheeler - won the local service club’s Amazing Rotary Rally on Saturday (May 14). “We were a little worried going into it with my sister being pregnant,” said Paquette. “But the day went well and we are super excited that we won again.” The event raised over $4,000. Proceeds will support the new mental health facility attached to the Cornwall Community Hospital as well as the Children’s Treatment Centre. Over 55 participants raced all over the city, taking photos of local landmarks, completing challenges and generally having a great time, said co-chair Christopher Bookhout. “The 2016 Amazing Rotary Rally was a success,” said Bookhout. “The weather held up which was our big concern. We wanted to create an event that people could enjoy and have fun. Something different for Cornwall.

We are also proud to help raise funds for local causes.” Teams of two-four had just four hours to complete a list of tasks, each with a different point value, like collecting items, answering trivia questions, and photographing their

The team with the most points at 4:30 p.m. was the winner. In this competition, it wasn’t as much about speed but strategy - opting to either try for a larger amount of smaller tasks or a few of the tasks worth more points. Teams were also encouraged to collect donations for Rotary’s ‘Purple Pinkie’

campaign to eradicate polio. Points were also awarded to the top three teams for the most funds collected. All of the proceeds will be matched two-to-one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. For more information visit the Cornwall Sunrise Rotary Club website at portal.clubrunner.ca/493.

Cornwall believed to be first ‘dementia-friendly’ community in Ontario Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall is one of the first, if not the first, municipalities in Ontario to designate itself a dementia-friendly community. City council voted this week to have all front-line municipal staff trained to deal with persons with dementia. The city will also identify municipal buildings as dementia-friendly offices. As a city where nearly 40 per cent of the population is grappling with a dementia diagnosis, or is caring from someone with the affliction, the news is being welcomed by experts “One of the things that people living with dementia…have said is that it is really challenging for them to get out,” said Shelley Vaillancourt, executive director of the local Alzheimer’s Society of Canada office. “They need supports. When they say to people they have dementia…those people don’t know

what to do next.” Later this year city staff will begin to receive training to deal with members of the public who may present themselves at a municipal building exhibiting signs of dementia. “We are very pleased with the city making this decision and in terms of going through training we hope to highlight the City of Cornwall as being the community setting the example for other communities,” added Vaillancourt. “I think Cornwall is the first community in Ontario to do this.” Within SD and G and Prescott-Russell as many as 3,500 people have been diagnosed with dementia, be it full-blown Alzheimer’s or other similar conditions. City councillors voted unanimously to support the move. “I like the sound of the dementia-friendly workshops and that looks like it will be a good thing,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. One of the ways a person can educate

The Alzheimer’s Society would like to see 7,000 Cornwall and area residents registered on the site, which will help this region become known as a dementia-friendly community.

CORNWALL, Ont. – A 39-year-old Cornwall man got a free ride – to jail, not home – after allegedly attempting to rob a taxi driver at knifepoint. Cornwall Community Police Service say the cabbie picked up a fare on Thursday (May 12). Once they arrived at the destination, police allege the man demanded money while brandishing a knife. Police were contacted and located the man a short distance away. “He did not get any money,” said CCPS Const. Daniel Cloutier. “The cab driver was able to distance himself from the would-be robber.” Alain Boudrias was arrested and charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carry concealed weapon, and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace. County council officially votes to pull out of tourism funding arrangement TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

8 - Thursday, May 19, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - United Counties council has voted to pull out of a funding agreement with a local tourism agency. County councillors voted Monday to end its partnership to fund Cornwall and the Counties Tourism at the end of this year, taking back some $80,000 the upper tier municipality spent on the agency that markets this area to visitors. While a specific plan to move ahead without the funding has not yet been announced, tourism executive director Linda Wilson has indicated her agency is looking at other avenues to replace the

county funding. Monday’s decision by county council was not surprising. The municipality had indicated to Cornwall city hall weeks ago its intent to pull out of the project. “We’re disappointed with the decision at the county council table,” said tourism president Linda Halliday. “However, we have no plans of stopping what we do, which is develop and implement excellent marketing strategies and campaigns to attract more visitors.” The agency said it will be business as usual for for the remainder of 2016, as marketing buys and projects are already underway, however the board of directors and staff will be trying to find ways to

recoup the $80,000 lost by the decision. “We have a strong foundation of partners and a creative team...we will be working diligently to seek out funding opportunities that will allow us to continue to build the tourism industry that brought in over $221 million in economic impact to this region in 2015,” Halliday said. Former Cornwall CAO Norm Levac said, in a previous interview, city officials have had descussions on how to move forward – and all options are on the table. As an example, there’s been informal talk of bringing the tourism wing under the auspices of the city’s economic development department. City hall contributed $160,000 to the tourism agency this year (down from $180,000 the year

Simpson has indicated the decision boils down, in large part, to ensuring the counties are getting effective bang for the municipal buck. Counties officials had some concerns about the way the tourism agency governed itself, including what it felt were a low number of elected officials from both municipalities on its board. It has also expressed worry with the low number of SD and G businesses that participate in the tourism agency’s initiatives. Last summer county council began voicing its concerns with continuing to fund the tourism agency.

Vintage wedding gowns to go down the aisle again for local causes ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc

ST. ANDREWS, Ont. – From 1840 to present day, every dress in the charitable fashion show has a personal connection to someone local. The Catholic Women’s League of St. Andrews Parish unveiled new details about their ‘Wedding Dresses: Through the Ages’ fashion show and dessert tea fundraising event, taking place at St. Andrews Church on Saturday (June 4) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (for the hospital’s addiction and mental health centre) and other area charities. “You can expect it to be like a wedding,” said organizer Linda Wood. The event will present over 30 vintage gowns, as well as bridesmaid, mother-of-the-bride, and flowergirl dresses. Wood said she is overwhelmed at the response from parishioners offering to lend to their treasured mementoes. A selection of the wedding dresses will be on display in the center aisle of the church and

throughout the side aisles for viewing. Accompanying each gown will be a description, which will also highlight social aspects of the time period, in addition to annecdotes about what might have happened at the wedding. “So it’s not just a regular fashion show,”Woods added. St. Andrews’ Mcleod sisters, Madison and Lauren, will be modeling their dresses as pictured above, and dozens of other gowns will be worn by other volunteers during the afternoon event. “Every dress has a relationship to someone,” said Wood. “You can learn a lot about society through fashion and these wedding dresses really give us a historical look at how people lived around here back then.” Tickets are $15 – $5 for children – and can purchased at Auntie Em’s Scrapbooking and Beading and Laura’s Flower & Gift Shop, or directly from CWL members. “We’re hoping that people will purchase ahead of time, simply because the CWL is making the fancy desserts so we want to make sure there will be enough for everyone,” said Wood.

CORNWALL, Ont. – A novel about tightly gathered emotions set in a small town on Lake Ontario just after World War I has been named by the SD&G County Library as the 2016 SDG Reads title. The SD&G County Library is happy to announce the return of SDG Reads, an initiative that encourages all Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry residents to read the same book from May until October. This year, SDG Reads selected Frances Itani’s Tell. “We were so pleased with the community’s response to SDG Reads in 2015, we’re eager to get started on this year’s program,” said Karen Franklin, director of Library Services. “We had input from staff and participants in choosing our next author and book, and we are looking forward to hearing what others think about this selection.” The SD&G County Library will be holding various events from now until October to get people involved in the program, and will be creating travelling displays to highlight some of the themes found in the novel. The whole SDG Reads program will end in October, with a visit by the author. Itani will be coming to North Stormont Place in Avonmore on Wednesday, October 19, at 6:00 p.m. “Ms. Itani is a very well-respected Canadian author and we are lucky to have her participation in this year’s program,” said Franklin. For more information, visit www.sdglibrary. ca/sdg-reads or contact your local branch. The rulebook says we should have fluoride in our water Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

The hours are counting down to next Tuesday, when city council is finally expected to make a decision on the fluoride issue that has polarized many this spring. What has been missed through much of this debate is one ironclad fact – Cornwall water should be fluoridated, at least as far as the rulebook is concerned. Try to follow the moving pieces here, because it can get a little complicated. A vote was held a few years ago to remove fluoride from our water. Council decided at that time to keep it in. So right now, on paper, Cornwall water is to be fluoridated. The only reason it is not, is because of a health and safety concern at the water treatment plant. A broken valve at the plant forced authorities to terminate water fluoridation three years ago, pending improvements at the plant. A vote to authorize those improvements has not yet taken place at city hall, and instead we have been subjected to reams of material both for and against the practice. While next week’s council meeting agenda won’t be made public until well after we go to press, every indication is Tuesday’s session will finally see an end to the swirling debate concerning our drinking water. At that time it’s conceivable council will simply vote to authorize the improvements at the water treatment plant – or not.

But what happens if such a vote ends up in a tie? With Coun. Justin Towndale attending military basic training there are now 10 members of council voting on the issue…and there’s every indication this could be a tight vote. Maybe even 5-5, depending on how some silent councillors ultimately decide to vote. A tie vote means nothing – no action is taken. Yet on the books we are supposed to have fluoridated water. Does that mean we could be considered a municipality with fluoridated water that has no fluoride in the system thanks to a technical issue at the plant? Maybe. To be sure, there are other options council could consider. A motion to simply remove fluoride is possible, though unlikely. Ditto a move to send the matter to the public by way of a referendum/plebiscite. The way I see this playing out next week is a budget vote to move ahead with spending money on water filtration plant upgrades – about $350,000 at last count, though the final number could reach as much as half a million. Sadly, I have to report there appears to have been little change among city councillors on this issue. Informal discussion suggests by a narrow vote of perhaps 6-4 council will vote to reinstitute fluoride in Cornwall. I hope I’m wrong, but it doesn’t look that way. Councillors Claude McIntosh, Towndale and David Murphy, as well as Mayor Leslie

O’Shaughnessy, have voiced opposition to fluoride. Fence-sitters, and those who have yet to make a definitive comment on the matter include Councillors Maurice Dupelle, Carilyne Hebert and Mark MacDonald, while the balance of council is likely to vote in favour of the practice. Towndale is on leave while he completes basic training with the Canadian Forces, and his vote to oppose fluoride will be sorely missed. And while it’s conceivable the troika of Dupelle, Hebert and Mark MacDonald could side with those opposed to fluoride, I’m hearing that is unlikely to be the case.

local man who works in Fort McMurray for two-week stretches before returning to Cornwall for a respite, took it upon himself to drive out to Edmonton this week to deliver some 200 prom dresses to fire evacuees. His boss’s daughter as looking for dresses and people in and around Halifax got together and collected them. When the airlines wouldn’t provide free transport for the dresses Landry decided to make the trek First he drove to New Brunswick where he picked up the dresses. Then he drove out west with them. We spoke with him Tuesday when he was in North Bay, headed west for the provincial border. What a guy. You can read the story on our ON THE ROAD AGAIN website. Kudos to Cornwall’s Jacques Landry. The relentless march of Father Time has been the post-war enemy for members of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders who helped unshackle Europe from the Nazi yoke. Some 70 years since the regiment fought its last battle in wartorn Europe, the ranks have dwindled to a handful of the 3,500 who were sent off to the war. Only five are believed to be alive today, all living outside SD and G. The last resident of SD and G who served with the Highlanders in the Second World War died earlier this year. Walter Solly, who was among the Highlanders who landed on Juno Beach on D-Day, was 95. He lived in Cornwall. The regimental reunion at Cornwall Armoury on the weekend had one Highlander Second World War veteran, Donn Fowler of Brockville. The Highlanders, some of them not old enough to vote and each carrying 78 pounds of equipment, landed on blood-stained Juno Beach at noon on June 6, 1944, several hours after the first waves of Allied soldiers stormed the Normandy coastline. By all accounts, it was an easy landing for the Highlanders. However, it didn’t take long for the ugliness of war to show its face to the Highlanders. The baptism of fire came 24 hours later when they went up against units of the feared SS Panzer Division. The clash claimed nine Highlanders. A few days later 34 Highlanders were killed in action. As deceased veteran John Angus McDonald once said of the initial losses, “That was just the beginning (for the Highlanders).” The last Highlander killed in battle came just two days before the war ended. It is said that the Highlanders never lost a yard in their 11-month hellish march

across Europe. In one stretch, they marched 30 straight hours through mud and rain without food and precious little water. The retreating Germans had poisoned the wells. But it came at a tremendous cost. Of the 3,500 sent to Europe from 1940 to 1945, 350 never returned. On Saturday, at a memorial service for those lost in battle, it took 22 minutes to read names of the fallen Glens. TRIVIA ANSWER The Eastcliffe Hall, a 4,000-ton laker, sank in the St. Lawrence River just east of Morrisburg after the vessel strayed out of the main channel in the early morning hours of July 14, 1970 and struck a concrete foundation a few feet below the surface. Nine members of the 21-person crew drowned. A board of inquiry determined that the captain, who was one of the nine victims, was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The ship’s bell was never recovered. It is believed divers removed it in the days following the accident. TRIVIA In April 1974 the City of Cornwall annexed 60 acres of township property for construction of this plant. An announcement by the international company said it expected to employ some 1,000 people, mostly tradespeople. SPRING SERENADE: Bringing Vivaldi to Cornwall area Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – Enjoy the sounds of Antonio Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’ as presented by the Amaryllis Choir from Vankleek Hill. Vivaldi’s most famous work, known for its sunny nature, warm melodies and distinctive rhythms, will herald a long-awaited spring on Sunday, May 29, at St John’s Presbyterian Church in Cornwall. The concert starts at four p.m. “As Gloria is a relatively brief composition, Amaryllis will return to its roots and perform several lively and challenging motets and madrigals as they were originally sung, a cappella,” said Kathleen MacEwen, president of the women’s and men’s choir executive. Members of Amaryllis will be accompanied by 16 musicians brought together by Cornwall native Therese Motard, renowned cellist who has appeared across Canada and throughout the world. “The opening movement in Gloria is a joyous proclamation by choir, orchestra, and trumpet,” said MacEwen. On hand will be Barbara Hunter, former instructor of trumpet and music pedagogy at McGill and Concordia universities and regular performer with the Encore Brass Quintet. In addition to these distinguished musicians is soloist Danielle Vaillancourt. “Her beautiful full mezzo adds beauty and depth to any performance,” added MacEwen. The Renfrew native is well-known in Cornwall for her vocal prowess and has established a name for herself in Montreal as soloist at St Andrew’s and St Paul’s churches on Sherbrooke Street. “Our guests can expect to be moved and serenaded by this magnificent sacred work that only lasts an hour,” said Vaillancourt. MacEwen described Amaryllis maestro Uwe Lieflander, of Germany, as a talented conductor who inspires choristers and orchestra alike, who delights in explaining the story of the music.

Renfrew native Danielle Vaillancourt, the soloist is set to perform with the Amaryllis Choir from Vankleek Hill during their two local upcoming presentations of Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. For the past four years, under the direction of Lieflander, Amaryllis has expanded its repertoire and has welcomed a men’s group into their midst and now sings primarily with orchestra. Although Amaryllis is based in Vankleek Hill, members come from both Ontario and Quebec. “Twenty-one years ago, a group of determined women approached Carol Hague, a graduate of McGill in choral music and her husband Richard, also very experienced in choral music shortly after they moved to the Hill from Montreal,” said MacEwen. “They convinced Carol and Richard to direct a choir of women they would assemble. After considerable hard work and organization, the result was a choir that blended in harmonies sung largely without accompaniment.” Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from Scotiabank Cornwall and The Grind Cafe. Amaryllis will also perform Gloria on Saturday, May 28, at Knox Presbyterian Church on High Street in Vankleek Hill. The concert starts at 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.amaryllischoir.ca.

Tulip blooming ceremony at Cornwall Cenotaph Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A retired Canadian Forces lieutenant-colonel has fond memories of the friendships he made while in the service. And he will be reminded of those memories every time he gazes upon 700 tulips, blooming at the Cornwall Cenotaph, planted to help honour Canada’s sacrifices during the Second World War. A tulip blooming ceremony took place at the Cenotaph last week, attended by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297, the Cornwall and District Horticultural Society and the forces. The hundreds of tulips were donated to Cornwall to mark the 70th anniversary of the Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden. In 1945 the Royal Family of Holland donated 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa to mark Canada’s sacrifices during the war. Today Cornwall is one of 140 Friendship Tulip

Garden locales in all of Canada. “This is a very special day because we are remembering friendships created many years ago,” retired Lt.-Col. Bill Shearing told a throng of school children attending the ceremony. “When I think of Holland I think of windmills, canals and flowers.” Thelma Cameron, president of the horticultural society, called the garden a “glorious display.” The red tulips have added a tremendous splash of colour to the Cenotaph on Second Street West. A tulip blooming ceremony took place at the Cornwall Cenotaph Tuesday morning to commemorate the planting of 700 flowers. Cornwall is one of only 140 Friendship Tulip Gardens across Canada.

Small Moments of Joy

2016 marks the 12th anniversary of Rachel’s Kids and it continues to evolve with the ever-changing landscapes of philanthropy by writing a new chapter into its foundation via ‘Small Moments of Joy’ – a new initiative created in its 10th anniversary year. Small Moments of Joy is a program focused on local children battling life threatening or chronic illness. The program will grant wishes for these children – with the goal of allowing them to forget their illness or upcoming / ongoing treatments or surgeries, and for a moment or two focus on a moment of joy. Our goal is to aid in the recovery process by providing a positive and happy experience for the child and his or her family, but with a focus on the young person. Harboured in this program is the belief that positivity aids in the recovery and healing process. Rachel’s Kids first small moment was the purchase of a pool for a local boy, Joel Fast, who is living with developmental delays, as a result of cancer treatments. This year, Rachel’s Kids continues its Small Moments of Joy program with George Jacobs, a 5 year old boy who has lived the first years of his life unlike other boys his age. He was born with polycystic kidney disease. There is no known cure for the disease and the only way to help him was to receive a transplant. Starting at the age of 2, he underwent hemodialysis for 2 years until a donor finally surfaced. During his long stays at the hospital, he dreamt of one day visiting Disneyland and meeting his favourite silver screen movie star: Emmet from the Lego movie! Once George’s health was up to par for travelling, Rachel’s Kids started planning their well-deserved family vacation. They visited Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood, SeaWorld, Legoland Hotel, and Busch Gardens. Rachel’s Kids was overjoyed that we could help George focus on having fun as a 5 year old boy rather than thinking about his illness for the week that they spent on vacation.

Helping Hands In 2014, Rachel’s Kids launched the Helping Hands program - an off shoot of Small Moments of Joy. There were many very young children suffering from serious illness but because of their age group, they were really too young to need or express their interest for a small moment. Rachel’s Kids quickly discovered that the stress, travel and time to take these young kids to treatment was placing huge financial burdens on these young families. Helping Hands stepped in and assisted with gas cards, food cards, pre-paid phone cards and the like to help these families cope with basic living expenses while their children were undergoing treatment. (The kids all got something too :))

One of the families we assisted this year was a family in need with a daughter who was born at 25 weeks, weighing in a mere 1 pound 10 ounces. Her name is Shanelle and she spent the first 4-5 months of her life in the NICU at the Ottawa General Hospital. Rachel’s kids provided her family with gas cards to help pay for the cost of travelling, along with grocery gift cards to help get them through the holiday season. “Words can’t explain how extremely thankful we are to Rachel’s Kids for their wonderful donation to our family especially at this time of year. It will greatly help out with our everyday trips to visit our sweet lil angel. Again thank you from the bottom of our hearts! The Cadieux Family xo”

CORNWALL, Ont. – Shoppers picked up a bargain while helping Baldwin House, a 10-bed women’s shelter, on Saturday (May 7). Royal LePage Performance Realty held its eighth annual National Garage Sale for Shelter Saturday (May 7), with all proceeds benefiting Baldwin House. The Cornwall branch is hoping to raise $10,000 including matched funds from Scotiabank. The final tally will be released next week. “We want to support our community, and Baldwin House needs our help,” said Linda Giroux-Daigle, sales representative for Royal Lepage and event organizer. Nearly 1,000 community members stopped by the event to show their support. The garage sale also featured a live auction, silent auction,

and BBQ. Over 50 Royal Lepage agents, brokers, managers, and administrative staff were more than glad to volunteer for a worthy cause. “This event helps with our programming operating costs that we can’t manage with our current budget through the ministry,” said Petey Cameron, staff finance coordinator for Baldwin House. “It offsets a lot of the operating budget and allows us to do some extra activities for the ladies and children who come in, that we would otherwise not be able to do.” Baldwin House helps women dealing with domestic violence and/or in need of housing. It has 10 beds and the typical length of stay is six weeks. The women’s shelter also has a 24-hour crisis line to further assist women and their children in the transition from violent and abusive circumstances to a safe and secure environment.

Saturday, June 18. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and registration is $20 per person, and $5 for children. While teams of two-five tour the city, a silent auction will take place at the Cornwall Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “A couple of years ago, I decided to start helping the community more,” said Massia. “After participating in the centre’s Bike-a-Thon Plus a few times, I’ve developed a really good relationship with Angelo Towndale (CTC board member). So every time I fundraise it goes back to the centre. I also really like kids, and will be running the children’s activities at the 2016 Bike-a-Thon.” Teams will be required to find items, answer trivia questions, take team photos, and respond to challenges during a three-hour timeframe. Each team will need a car, a camera, and a can-do attitude. “This event is a great way to give back, while having fun,” said Massia, winner of the CTC’s prestigious 2015 Spirit Award. “We, the youth, need to get involved to better our city.” Since 2012, the local do-gooder has hosted numerous CTC fundraisers, including: BBQs, yard sales, bake sales, and car washes. After recently completing a bachelor of arts degree with honours and a bachelor of education from Queen’s University, Massia is eager to devote herself to local youth as a teacher. McDonell slams Liberals over cap-and-trade scheme CORNWALL, Ontario – Local MPP Jim McDonell is slamming the Ontario government over plans to reduce carbon emissions via increased costs to taxpayers. The implementation plan of the Ontario government’s cap-and-srade scheme, obtained by the Globe and Mail, sheds light on the deep changes the government wishes to impose in the province – including curtailing use of natural gas for home heating. “The Liberals intend to plough $7 billion into various policy schemes that will not benefit consumers and result in an increase in the cost of all goods and fuels,” said McDonell. “The planned

on our way of life in Ontario and on the natural gas, petroleum and auto industries. After losing 350,000 good, well-paying manufacturing jobs, the Liberals have made it quite clear they are prepared to kill even more jobs, and send more Ontario companies south of the border. The affordability of life in Ontario and the health of our economy hang in the balance. If the Liberals continue with their reckless cap-and-trade scheme – the cost of everything in this province will go up and more hardworking Ontarians will be thrown out of work. That is why Ontarians must act now to stop this scheme before it’s too late.”

outside larger cities for the benefit of those living in denser areas,” said McDonell. “Another example is the planned free electricity giveaway for overnight electrical vehicle charging. We know our province has an electricity surplus and it is cheaper to give it away than sell it to our neighbours at a loss. The Liberals’ plan, however, ignores all those Ontarians who could benefit from free night-time electricity for the sake of the few who can own and use an electric vehicle – it makes no sense.” MPP Lisa Thompson, PC Environment Critic, hammered the Liberals too, adding: “The Liberal cap-and-trade cash-grab amounts to an attack

removal of the choice of natural gas heating will cost families $3,000 per year as the cost of electric heating skyrockets. A further tax on gasoline will hit commuters and the transportation industry. It is nothing but a wealth transfer on a massive scale from low- or middle-income Ontarians to wealthier residents who can, for instance, afford to buy a new electric vehicle.” Under the plan, buyers of electric vehicles will be eligible for $14,000 taxpayer-funded rebates, while the GO Train system can expect $354 million for electrification and increased service. “These policies are designed to tax Ontarians

A little rain doesn’t dampen walkers’ fundraising spirits Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – The 14th annual Hike for Hospice in Cornwall raised $55,000. Dwight Grant, bagpiper with the South Glengarry Pipes and Drums, led over 150 people from the centre’s parking lot on a 30-minute trek around the city’s bicycle path on Sunday (May 1). Sandy Collette, fundraising coordinator for Carefor Hospice Cornwall, thanked the community for their support despite the rainy weather. “We’re a little lower than usual (in regards to participants), but the money is tracking well,” said Collette. Since the centre only receives partial government funding, every year $500,000 has to be raised to meet its operational budget. Once again, the top individual fundraiser was Ray O’Collin. The dapper gentleman collected over $7,000; his running tally is roughly $70,000. For more information about volunteering or how to make a donation, visit www.cornwallhospice.com/donate.

‘Kids’ Art Exhibition’ returning for sixth year Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ont. – Budding young artists will be displaying their mini-masterpieces during a special outdoor event next month. For the sixth year, a South Korean painter who made a home in Cornwall is sharing the artwork of her students at an exhibition tent on her front yard.

“I’m so proud of my students, this is their day to show off their talent to parents and the community,” said Hye Kung, who graduated with honours from a four-year fine arts program at Wonkwang University. The private children’s art class she runs out of her home studio is hosting its annual Kids’ Art Exhibition at 1413 Holy Cross Boulevard on Sunday, June 19. The free event runs from 10

a.m. to noon. “It’s very important to help promote the arts,” said Kung. Kung, a familiar face at Our Beautiful Obsession (OBO) Studios, is an artist who paints with watercolours and acrylic and is fascinated with exploring country landscapes, birds, and wildlife. From September to June, her group of 30

aspiring artists ages nine to 15 have been learning techniques like shading and mixing, to help create their own breathtaking images for the event. Kung’s artwork has been seen in juried art exhibitions and festivals locally as well as Ottawa and Kingston. For more information, visit the Hye’s Art Facebook page facebook.com/HyesArt.

CORNWALL, Ont. – Cornwall City Hall is forging a strong relationship between the arts and politics. The City of Cornwall is launching a new program to showcase local artists by displaying pieces of their work in City Hall. The ‘Art of the City’ initiative will see original local art displayed in hallways and offices at City Hall (360 Pitt Street) on a rotating basis. The program grew out of an initial discussion about decorating the Mayor’s Office with pieces of local art. “Artists will benefit by gaining some exposure while the City benefits from having our building enhanced with beautiful displays of art,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “It is also a way for the City to show support for the arts and culture sector here in Cornwall.” The first piece of art to be showcased at City Hall comes courtesy of Kathleen Morin. Her painting, ‘Walk With Me,’ is on display next to the Committee Room on the second floor of City Hall. Mrs. Morin was eager to participate in the program. “I’m extremely pleased with the City’s effort in providing space for local artists to exhibit their work,” said Mrs. Morin. “It’s a great way to

celebrate the vibrant arts scene that exists in Cornwall and SDG.” Artists from Cornwall and SDG can apply to participate in the program on a voluntary basis. Given the anticipated response and limited display locations, there may be a waiting period for artists whose pieces are accepted for display. Based on the response, the program may eventually be expanded to include other City venues. Submissions are now being accepted and artists who wish to participate are asked to send an email to artofthecity@cornwall.ca along with their contact information, a brief biography and up to 5 images (in .jpeg format) of samples of their work for consideration. The artwork on display is considered to be on loan to the City of Cornwall and participating artists must sign a waiver of responsibility. Works of art to be displayed include (but are not limited to) drawings, paintings, prints, digital graphics and photography. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. It is anticipated that pieces of artwork will be rotated every few months (subject to the number of applications received). For full details and guidelines, please visit www.Cornwall.ca/ArtOfTheCity.

LONG SAULT, Ont. – Laycey Lafave is battling leukemia, but she’s not fighting alone. Dozens of people gathered in support of the five-year-old Cornwall girl at a charity softball tournament in Long Sault from May 6-8, featuring a bake sale, raffle prizes, and face-painting. The three-day event raised $1,000. The funds will help Laycey’s parents, Shaun Lafave and Kayla Snyder, cover travel expenses and medication as she undergoes chemotherapy treatments at the CHEO (Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario). “This is going to help us out a lot, especially travelling back and forth,” said Lafave. Laycey’s leukemia has a 90% cure rate, but the treatment process could take a few years. “As a mom, I can’t even imagine going through what this family is experiencing,” said Stacey Levac, tournament organizer. “My first thought was softball, of course, because any chance I get to play, I do. So it was a win-win!” Levac gave a special shout-out to several local businesses for stepping up to the plate, including: Play it Again Sports, Batter Up Cornwall, Furniture Village, Once Upon a

CORNWALL, Ont. – Brockville art teacher Mary-Louise Scappaticci will be transforming a popular Cornwall eatery into an ‘Ain’t Just Paint Night’ workshop starting on May 30. Scappaticci, who placed in the top five in this year’s Art Battle Canada, will be teaching guests to paint their own version of a forest landscape under the theme ‘New Beginnings’ at Captain George’s Fish ‘n’ Chips (1195 Second Street), next door to Cowan’s Dairy, from 7-9 p.m. “I’m hoping to inspire others to pick up the brush and create as I share my passion for painting,” said Scappaticci. For $40, guests will be given all the painting supplies needed to leave with their own masterpiece. Participants are encouraged to come have dinner beforehand and enjoy a glass of wine. The restaurant service runs from 4:30-9:00 p.m. The Ain’t Just Paint Night event will take place at Cowan’s since the ice cream parlour is closed on Mondays. “We’re proud to be hosting another exciting new addition to the city’s restaurant scene,” said Surinder Gill, owner of Cowan’s and Captain George’s in Brockville and Cornwall. The licensed eatery offers fish and chips, in addition to other seafood fare like shrimp and scallops as well as hamburgers and souvlaki chicken. Captain George’s also recently launched a new series of interactive trivia nights on select Mondays starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information, visit captgeorgecornwall.com.

DON’T GET STRANDED

It’s a beautiful day; the sun is shining and you’ve just launched your boat for the start of another season on the water. And the thoughts of that tough winter just past are quickly forgotten. Everyone’s on board, excited about the day ahead, so off you go. The day unfolds as you had hoped it would. Until a problem leaves your boat dead in the water. It could be that you’ve run out of gas or you’ve had a mechanical breakdown of some kind. What to do? Likely what you did not do is check your boat thoroughly before heading out. And unfortunately, you are not alone. www.smartboater.ca was created by the Canadian Safe Boating Council in partnership with the National Search and Rescue Secretariat to remind Canadians during Safe Boating Awareness Week, which runs from May 19th -25th and throughout the entire boating season to review their safe boating check list before heading out onto the water. Scott Miller, a Maritime Search and Rescue Coordinator with the Canadian Coast Guard says: “75 to 80% of calls for help to the Coast Guard are non-distress calls; the most common ones deal with boats that have broken down, run aground or have just run out of gas

which is far and away the most common call to the Coast Guard, and these are all situations that are entirely preventable by the boat operator.” Mechanical failures can strike any boater, any time. That’s just part of boating. And it’s not necessarily an indication that the boater has simply failed to properly look after the boat. Stuff happens! But many calls for help are predictable and preventable. Have a proper check list for your boat and follow it before you head out, each and every time. Make sure that your boat is mechanically sound and that you have enough gas for your intended voyage with some in reserve. And file a sail plan or itinerary to help Search and Rescue find you in the event of a real emergency. A few simple steps will save you the embarrassment of making an unnecessary call for help and diverting search and rescue resources from areas where they might be needed more. Review your check list BEFORE your leave – Be Prepared! Whether you use a power boat, sail boat, personal watercraft, canoe, kayak or fishing boat, find more information on a variety of boating safety tips by visiting www. SmartBoater.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall woman who lost her mom last year following a doublelung transplant has created a golf tournament in her honour. And Shannon Ferguson knows her mom couldn’t be prouder. Alice Ferguson died last year while recuperating from a heart attack she suffered in September. Alice had already undergone a double-lung transplant thanks to a hypertension pulmonary fibrosis diagnosis. Alice was no stranger to the business world, or politics. She help found the local Women’s Entrepreneur Network and was a candidate for city council in the early 2000s. The First Annual Alice Ferguson Memorial Golf Tournament goes July 10 at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. Sponsorships are still being accepted. “She would love this - she loved golf,” said Shannon. “We were members of the golf club when I was little. “Going through her old pictures I found a lot of her where she was golfing. I know she’s on my

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Boys and Girls Club is bringing in a heavy-hitter once again for its annual golf tournament.

Je me

allspice and rub all over quail. Arrange quail in 1 layer in a baking pan and marinate, covered and chilled, at least 1 hour. Make sauce: Simmer broth, lime juice, molasses, and scallion in a small heavy saucepan, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in butter until incorporated. Season sauce with salt and pepper and keep warm. Broil quail: Arrange oven rack so that top of quail (on top of broiler pan) will be 2 inches from heat, then preheat broiler. Lightly oil broiler pan and heat under broiler until hot. Brush quail (on both sides) with olive oil and broil 2 inches from heat, turning once, until just cooked through, 6 to 10 minutes total. Serve quail drizzled with sauce.

Washing painted walls is faster and cheaper than painting them. If you have your walls professionally washed, you’ll probably spend a great deal less than you would for a professional paint job. Practice the two-bucket technique to make your cleaning solution last longer. Rinse and sqeeze the dirt from your wall-washing rag into a bucket of water before dipping it into the cleaning solution bucket. Rinsing will help prevent streaking. Use only white, off-white or color-fast cloths to wash walls and celings; some dye in colored cloths may stain the surface. As a resting place for lint and other residue, baseboards are usually the dirtiest part of the room. Wash them last after you have washed the walls.

Robert “Pete” Goulet February 28, 1939 – May 19, 2014

I remember the day I met you, And the day God made you mine, I remember the day God took you, And will till the end of time, We made our vows together, Until death do we part, But the day God took you from me, My whole world fell apart, Sometimes I think I’m dreaming, I can’t believe it’s true, That I can go on living, When I no longer have you, And the memories of the happy years, When we were together, The joys, the tears, the love, the fears, Will stay with me forever. And when I’m sad and lonely, And everything goes wrong, I seem to hear you whisper, “Cheer up and carry on.” Each time I see your picture, You seem to smile and say, “Don’t cry I’m only sleeping, We’ll meet again someday.” Lovingly remembered by your wife Cindy and family and friends.

So many things have changed this past year, there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t think of you, your smile, your laugh, even just to hear you sigh. How I wish you could be here with us. But these things we only see in our dreams...oh but we feel them in our hearts. I want you to know, all those things you wished to complete, they’ve been completed. The last quilt has been quilted and your girls love them. Your last knitting has been knit and all those Christmas gifts you bought, they’ve been given. We visit you weekly, wishing for what could be and remembering all the times we shared. We talk to you, cry for you and wish so hard to feel your touch. What I would give to see you smile & touch you again. The grandkids all remember you fondly. Cheye talks to you all the time, she likes to talk about all the conversations you both share. We all miss you dearly my love. I pray you’re in a better place but how I wish you could still be here by my side. Don’t worry my love, we will never ever forget you. We will forever look at the blue skies facing East and feel your love brush our cheeks. Every sunset, we’ll watch and think of you and say “I love you Pauline, Mom, Gramma. You’re the best.” So rest in peace my dear, you have suffered silently enough here on Earth. ‘ Til we see each other again.

Official guests assemble Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com As we disembarked the North Star, the official guests, the VIPs who had been invited to attend the retirement ceremony were handed a blue pamphlet. “1030: Official guests assemble in Officers Mess”. “How official are we?” I asked Larry. “Looks like there’s going to be a big meal. How much money you got? I hope it’s a lot more than me?” Realizing that nobody was searching for cash in their pockets, we were able to enjoy our meal, and the post-dinner address by Air Marshal WA Curtiss, (Retired) CB, CBE, DSC, ED. Auld Lang Syne and O Canada followed. Then the

pamphlet stated “Official guests return to Officers Mess”. We didn’t. Since we now had the run of the base, we toured the ramps and the hangars to our hearts content. After all, we had taken on ‘Official guests’ status. It took us quite a while to satisfy our curiosity, but it was time to find out about the flight back to Downsview. Ordinarily, the AMU is crowded with arriving and departing passengers and those greeting them and those bidding adieu. However, when we entered the cavernous hall it was empty, except for someone at a desk, who had hurriedly shoved his newspaper out of sight. “What’s the departure time of the aircraft that’s taking the official guests back to

Downsview?” Pausing briefly, consulting a ream of papers on his desk, he gazed at us and said with a rather disinterested tone, “Left about an hour or so ago.” I returned his gaze, gathering my thoughts, and then I said with a carefully put on equally disinterested tone, “We’re going back to Downsview too.” Both of us, and the attendant, were obviously in a Mexican stand-off. Who was going to be the first to say something that would determine our fate? After a pregnant pause he came out with these statements of fact: “The aircraft taking the official guests back has already left. The only

other aircraft is taking Air Marshal Curtis back.” “I have no problem with that.” And then, I added, “I assume we won’t have to wait too long.” “No sir, it won’t be long.” As the Douglas C-47 Dakota droned westward, there were only three passengers on board. Two of them were trying to contain their glee, their relief and their sense of satisfaction. The tricky parts were now behind us. Our many years of continued aircraft chasing were still ahead of us. About thirteen years later, on November 4, 1982, Larry J. Milberry published his latest book, “The Canadair North Star”. Today, he is Canada’s most prolific and respected aviation author and publisher, CANAV Books.

HOT RODS: Local musicians keep giving back Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - A local “band of brothers” is getting together in support of a band of brothers and sisters, of another kind, when the Concert for Heroes hits the stage, at La Maison, on May 21. The benefit show for Wounded Warriors, a national organisation which helps service men and women after their return from deployment, is the brainchild of local rocker, Rod Robillard, who is enlisting (so to speak) a group of his musician friends for the event. “I’ve always had a special place in my heart for these guys (and gals),” said Robillard, who recently lost a friend who suffered from post-

traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This is just the first step in a much larger project, in which Robillard, who has already begun a letter writing campaign, aspires to set up a program that would offer free music lessons to soldiers, to help them, after they return. “Instead of a service dog, we’ll give them a guitar or keyboard or something. I think it’s a great outlet for them.” The show will feature The Rod Squad with special guest, Paul Deslauriers, and performances by Robert Cote, Red Flag, General Jiffy Pop and The Kernels, featuring Camil Lapointe, with special guest Jamie Heath. Of course the evening will end with the

“obligatory ‘super jam,’” said Robillard, who promises to “rock the roof off.” “La Maison is proud to be a part of this wonderful event,” said Rodney Rivette, general manager. “It’s a great cause. I think we all know someone who fought for our country. My grandfather was wounded in WWII; it’s near and dear to my heart.” Admission is a $10 minimum donation with all proceeds benefiting injured veterans. Tickets can be purchased at La Maison, Melody Music and from the event’s performers. Also, in live music, in May… The Jet Set Pub at Nav Centre, will host Trevor Walsh, May 20; Andre and Jason, May 21;

Joel Sauve, May 27; Brian and Tim, May 28. Classic Soul will be at Truffles Burger Bar, on May 7. On May 14, at Aultsville Theatre, Seaway Winds pays tribute through music, narration and songs to famous musicians, songwriters and singers, places, events, and even animals! Guest MC, soloist and narrator is Chris Coyea, internationally acclaimed tenor, and Director of the Theatre Department at St. Lawrence College in Brockville. The exciting concert is a fitting finale and tribute to Seaway Winds 15th year. If you have music news or an event you would like featured here, drop me an email at roxannedelage@gmail.com.

The poor man was such a habitual drinker that even he was finally convinced that he was an alcoholic . At his family’s urging he went to see a psychiatrist. After a lengthy consultation, the doctor sternly ordered that hereafter, every time the patient got drunk he was to report his transgression the very next day. A few days later the patient staggered into the psychiatrist’s office. “I wanna report that I wash drunk last night,” he mumbled. “For heaven’s sake, man, you’re drunk right now! ”cried the doctor. “Yeah I know,” said the patient, “but I’m gonna report this tomorrow.”

SCUTTLEBUTT From a caller...It’s very commendable to ask the public to “Adopt-A-Street” to pick-up litter, but shouldn’t the Public Works Dept. do their share of sweeping our very dirty streets and sidewalks...notably Second St. East and Water St. And when will our Public Works Dept. learn how to make nice and level sidewalks? There is so much slope on most sidewalks that after walking them every day, I’ve developed a shorter leg.

Pet Tip of the Week: During the summer months, remember, fireworks are terrifying for many pets. They will often run away, get lost, and end up in animal shelters. When fireworks displays are planned, leave your pet at home and play music or the television to help disguise the noise. Close windows and blinds or curtains.
