Relay for Life an emotional roller coaster CORNWALL, Ontario – According to the Canadian Cancer Society`s website, in 2015 more than 195,000 people were diagnosed with cancer. And right here in Cornwall, on any given day you don`t have to look very far to find someone who has been affected by it in some way. Hundreds of people gathered at Lamoureux Park to participate in Relay for Life for the first time in Cornwall as they paid tribute to cancer survivors, family and friends who have lost their battle and to those still fighting. “This year is our first event so hopefully next year it will grow,” said Sandra Donnelly, chair of the Cornwall Chapter of Relay For Life. “I thought there was a need to get things going here and love to volunteer.” Dr. Gordy Katt, a colorectal surgeon hosted the first Relay For Life in May 1985 to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. His goal was to show that one person really can make a difference and he spent twenty-four hours walking around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising over $27,000 USD. Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. The first Canadian Relay for Life was held in 1999 and raised $85,000. Canadians across the country have joined together for the past 17 years ever since to do so. This year, Cornwall was witness to this inspirational overnight event that brought together our
community, united with one common goal - to raise money towards prevention, support programs and research for cancer. Senior Manager with the Canadian Cancer Society of Eastern Ontario Byron James shared some inspirational insight on the concept of Relay for Life. The event in Cornwall operates on the original and traditional overnight concept from 7 pm to 7 a.m. While many of us were nestled in our beds, participants worked in teams and walked the entire night. “Relay for Life mirrors cancer,” said James. “At first you have your diagnosis, the shock, it`s dark, and you walk through the night, wake up the next day, fight, the sun comes up, you keep going. “It`s not easy. It`s not a marathon, there are lots of emotions and you leave tired and sore.” But as grueling and tiring as a 12-hour walk can be, everyone can agree it pales in comparison when he further added: “Try having cancer!” The Relay event opened with many survivors in attendance who walked the first lap. One of the most powerful of the ceremonies was the Luminaries ceremony. Held at 10:00 pm, luminaries were purchased in memory of loved ones affected with cancer and placed around the walking track. As participants continued to walk throughout the night, they were comforted by the hundreds of candles shining through the darkness as dozens of luminaries lit their path. Two very powerful images stood out as dozens of these luminaries were carefully arranged to spell the words HOPE and CURE, two words that continued to give them
Survivors proudly holding their signed banner marking years as survivors during Cornwall’s Relay for Life. the strength to complete their night but also to continue to fight. James states “These luminaries serve as markers.” People will pass these markers as they complete each lap. James adds “ When you`re doing the track all night you can see families stop and have a moment. It`s very emotional”. James attends Relay for Life across the province where the events are usually held on high school tracks or fields where lighting and electricity is brought in. He was quick to praise Lamoureux Park and added “It`s never been
run in Cornwall and I couldn`t understand why, especially with a location like this! It`s one of the most beautiful sights across the province. You`re looking at the river and you couldn`t have dialed up a better night!” While this was a building year for Cornwall`s first event, the goal was to raise $55,000 and make this a solid event. James expects to reach that goal and Cornwall can expect a return event for next year. DOWNTOWN VIGIL: Crowd gathers to hoist Pride flag, mourn Orlando losses Shannon Ferguson Special to TC Media
CORNWALL, Ontario - The Justice Building on Pitt Street was vibrant with colour on Friday but the tone was wrought with emotion at a public vigil held to remember and honour the victims of the Orlando shooting at Pulse Nightclub. The Cornwall vigil allowed for people to mourn the lives lost in the mass-shooting tragedy and express unity amongst the pride community within the city. Before the flag was raised to half-mast, Coun. Elaine MacDonald and former pride member Lori Taylor read out each of the 49 victims’ names and ages to a silenced and emotional crowd. Many city officials, including Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, were in attendance at the Cornwall vigil. “We’ve flown the pride flag before but we felt a sense of urgency to do it this week because of the Orlando events. We felt that to have a public vigil allows people to share, express, and honour,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, June 12 a lone American-born gunman pledging allegiance to ISIS entered the gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Armed with two firearms, he held those inside captive for hours, killing 49 people and injuring 53, before he was shot and killed by police. The mood changed from sombre to hopeful as the vigil continued and the stage was turned over the public in an open mic forum with people coming forward to express their solidarity with the LGBT community, vowing to bring pride back to Cornwall and reinvigorating the vitality that still surrounds the group. MacDonald was pleased with the energy brought forth. “They’re going to get active again and I think it’s important they do so because otherwise we can’t From left are Councillors Bernadette Clement and Elaine MacDonald as well as Fred turn the public spaces over to those who aren’t on Cappuccino (minister, Child Haven), and Lori Taylor (former Pride member). side,” she said. CORNWALL, Ontario - A new high-tech callback system is being implemented by the Cornwall Fire Service that will succeed an archaic scheme that has come under fire recently. A new mass text system is being put together that will notify off-duty personnel that an emergency requires their attendance. Seaway News broke the story a couple of weeks ago that firefighters were unreachable during the recent Ontario Hockey Academy fire that resulted in outside personnel being called in to help battle the flames. The system in place at that time obligated dispatchers to make phone calls to each off-duty firefighter. “We’ve addressed the procedure surrounding
callback as well as the priority in terms of who will get the call to come in during an emergency,” said fire chief Pierre Voisine. The move was welcomed by the firefighter union. “This particular fire highlighted the importance of modifying the process. The firefighters brought ideas forward to management to address the issue,” said Jason Crites, president of the Cornwall Professional Firefighters Association. “From there, the chief assigned the project to our Communications Lead, Captain Andrew Van Veen, with the mandate to implement a resolve.” The fire service is in the midst of purchasing software capable of automating the process, although it will take some time to implement and tweak. The new short-term fix is now being tested and will be fully operational within the next few days.

Retirees immortalized at Cornwall police HQ Shannon Ferguson Special to TC Media
CORNWALL, Ontario – Retirees of the Cornwall Community Police Service were honoured Monday morning with the unveiling of the new Retiree Wall of Honour, proudly displayed in the entrance way of the police station. The wall features 129 names of retired personnel, dating back to 1957 and including those who passed away while still employed with the service. Josee Lalonde initiated the Retiree Wall project and has been a dispatcher with the police service for 17 years. In 2012, she realized there was nothing in place to acknowledge past members for their lifetime commitment to the service. “It was then I had a vision to create something to honour those who spend their lives serving this community, something that shows From left are Doug Masson (Retiree), Paul-Guy Brisson (Retiree), Josee Lalonde our sincere gratitude,” said Lalonde. Big news on the way from ‘little historian’ Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s Little Historian is set to unveil some big news. Sara Lauzon said Thursday she has not only raised the $5,000 necessary to erect a permanent memorial for the remains of as many as 29 people that died decades ago at what was once the House of Refuge...but also that the memorial will be in place this summer. “Definitely this summer,” gushed Lauzon, who spent the better part of a year providing walking tours, holding rain-soaked yard sales and a host of other events to raise the money for the memorial. “I’m really excited for this,” said Lauzon, who has made it her passion to tell the stories of the more than 900 inmates at the House of Refuge, that was once located on Eleventh Street. The property now houses a long-term care facility. “I’m so thankful for the community for having my back.” In the early part of the 20th Century officials at the House of Refuge would often bury the bodies of deceased inmates on the property. The House of Refuge was known as a place for the less fortunate. In 1985 when nearby homes were being
built as many as 29 bodies from the property were removed and interred at St. Lawrence Valley Seaway Cemetery, west of Long Sault. The Kaneb Family purchased the plots at the cemetery. This week city council authorized the mayor and clerk to sign documentation to allow for the creation of the memorial, and Lauzon said the Kanebs are also providing their consent to the plan. “Everyone is on board with this,” she said. Brunet Monuments in Cornwall has been retained to create the memorial, which will likely measure three feet by 1.5 feet and will contain a message concerning the House of Refuge and its inmates. There is no tombstone marking the new graves at the cemetery - something Lauzon has worked to change. “This broke my heart,” said Lauzon. “Since the beginning of my research with this facility, I have known that bodies were uncovered from the property on two occasions.” She confirmed that information last year when she visited the cemetery and pored over their records. The remains were reburied in a western section of the cemetery, near the St. Lawrence River, said Lauzon. - With TC Media files.
Sara Lauzon says a memorial will be erected this summer for House of Refuge inmates.
Great St. Lawrence River Cleanup tackles trash
8 - Thursday, June 23, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com
CORNWALL, Ontario - As a part of their promise to take back the St. Lawrence River “one piece of garbage at a time,” the Upper St. Lawrence River Network kicked off the first day of the Great St. Lawrence River Cleanup on Saturday, June 18 at Gray’s Creek. The kickoff event on Saturday is the first of four dates which will take place over the summer to clean-up the St. Lawrence River. At the biggest clean up, planned for August 13, Karen Cooper of the Raisin Region Conservation Authority, hopes to have a crane on hand to get the really big pieces of garbage out of the river. “People see everything in the river and ask
why someone doesn’t do something,” Cooper said. “We know there are parts of the old bridge in there, but also washing machines, car parts and toilets from people who don’t want to pay dumping fees. What they don’t understand though is that this is our river. We get drinking water from this river.” Efforts to clean up the river go back thirty years when the rising levels of toxins in the water were declared a growing concern, and that is when the Remedial Action Plan to take back the river was organized. The Remedial Action plan is a part of the Upper St. Lawrence River Protection Network which supports the efforts of conservation groups along the river including in Cornwall, SD&G, and Akwesasne.

Scott Peters from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s environmental department was on hand to lead the volunteers at the cleanup in a traditional Mohawk prayer. Peters said that garbage in the St. Lawrence is something he has had to deal with for awhile. “It’s something I always see when I go out on the river,” he said. “I see this stuff and I do my best to stop and pick it up.” Peter’s said that 20 years ago, Akwesasne was sending divers out to pull some of this garbage out of the river. “I’m glad to see that now the whole region is getting involved in tackling this issue,” said Peters. Around 50 volunteers spread out along the coast line to pick up trash that had washed ashore, while 15 divers went out on boats to recover what they could from the water. Those who are interested in getting involved in future clean-ups are encouraged to get in touch with the Raisin Region Conservation Authority.

Team Cornwall welcomes community leaders back to the fold Shannon Ferguson Special to TC Media
CORNWALL, Ontario - Team Cornwall wants to continue to bring our own stars back to shine in Cornwall. The local business-advocacy group held its annual general meeting Tuesday, and the star of the show was City of Cornwall CAO Maureen Adams, who spoke of new developments here including the Riverdale splash pad as well as a new look to a busy city artery. There will be “significant replacement of Brookdale Avenue, including much landscape

She’s someone who left and now we are lucky to have her back here with us,” he said. Adams was appointed CAO for the City of Cornwall in May, making her the city’s first ever female CAO. Previously, she had served as the General Manager and Chief Financial Officer for the city with 20 years of prior experience in the banking and manufacturing industries. Peter Gault, Team Cornwall chair, kicked off the meeting with an energetic look at how the organization continues to advocate for the city and spread positive messages that showcase all the good things Cornwall has to offer. OPINION
Take a bow Angelo, you deserve it Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc
You have to wonder why we don’t have a park or a street named after Angelo Towndale. Because we darn well should. Just a few months ago Coun. Claude McIntosh stood up during a meeting at city hall and made an impassioned plea to have another piece of municipal infrastructure named after the late, great Bob Turner – a man of colour who towered above racism to become one of the leaders of our city before his untimely death in the 1960s. An arena bearing his name was torn down. It’s time for someone else to do something similar for Angelo, one of few people in this city who works tirelessly behind the scenes for the betterment of children and families yet eschews the limelight as if it were the plague. If only more who claimed to volunteer on behalf of others learned from Angelo’s fine example that when you truly give of yourself you do it without an expectation of praise or recognition. You just get to work. When I was a reporter at the StandardFreeholder we used to have an unofficial pool going on who would be able to snap a picture of Angelo and actually see it run in the newspaper. I don’t think anyone ever collected on that wager, but I see the daily finally succeeded in giving Towndale his due with some heavyduty coverage. Not surprisingly Angelo wasn’t quoted in the story that featured more than a few welldeserved accolades from treatment centre
partners. That’s probably due to two reasons: 1) Angelo didn’t know the story was being done, or 2) Would have refused to take part in it anyway. While so many ‘volunteers’ haven’t found a spotlight big enough in which to bask, I’m pretty sure Angelo would wilt in its glare. The Children’s Treatment Centre celebrated its 20th anniversary at a Friday gala, where the institution which survives without government assistance by virtue of the hard work Angelo completes in rallying people (and money) to his cause. Attendees heard from a pair of Cornwall moms whose children have been helped via its service. And while he characteristically avoided any praise or attention, it’s not hard to see Angelo’s fingerprints all over the successes the treatment centre has enjoyed. Politicians, sports figures and celebrities have all agreed, perhaps with some gentle prodding from Angelo, to give of their time to attend one treatment centre function or another. In the process tickets are sold and money is raised. You can thank Angelo for that work. Of course there is a small army of volunteers who rally behind Towndale and his treatment centre team – but Angelo is the general, and his decision-making has shaped an agency that has known more highs than lows in its 20 years of existence. Angelo got his philanthropic start at the local Children’s Aid Society, where his zeal for helping underprivileged young people has born. His work ethic can be witnessed every day.
I’m pretty sure he owns a car, but I’ve never seen him behind the wheel. Instead, he makes the daily trek to work by walking from his west-end Cornwall home to the treatment centre offices at the corner of Second and Adolphus streets. Often he carries an umbrella, because even inclement weather is no match for a man on a mission. And long after many of us have had our dessert and the sun is setting, Angelo can often be found walking back home again – another 12-hour day has been put in the books. It was somewhat surprising that I received a phone call from Angelo months ago. “What are you doing June 17?” he asked. This was the dead of winter, so my answer was something akin to: “Probably not much.” “I would very much like you and your wife to attend our anniversary event. I will set aside
tickets for you.” Now anyone who reads newspapers in Cornwall knows that the Standard-Freeholder and the treatment centre have enjoyed an ironclad relationship since day one. Our newspaper has similar partnerships with other community agencies. But this is Angelo – and you often feel just a bit humbled when he makes such an offer. “We’ll be there,” he was told. “Great. I want you to come and enjoy the night. You don’t have to cover it.” Wait for it… “But if you’d like to write a story, that would be great.” He’d probably be irritated to learn the story, as it should be, is all about him. But it’s the least we can do Angelo. You deserve so much more.
LETTERS Editor: As a member of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and a Safety Ambassador for the PLAYSAFE Program, I have met kids who have lost limbs in accidents that
could have been prevented. With the weather warming up, it’s a good time to teach kids about the dangers that can come with summer, such as lawn mowers, boat motors and playing around water areas.
I encourage parents to go on a “safety walk” dangers. It only takes a split second for an accident to with their children and point out the hazards in their area. By spreading the PLAYSAFE message, happen, so let’s all PLAYSAFE! Rachel Quilty children learn to spot the danger before they Peterborough play, and become more conscious of potential

Stuffed among the crowd of 100 or so souls at the Gay Pride flag event in front of the Justice Building on Friday was a gaggle of sign-bearing folks exercising their (gulp) right to protest at a public event. They see it as a God-inspired duty in their neverending fight against moral-corruption in our community. They are members of a small flock of local evangelical fundamentalists who can be counted on to show up at such events with their scripture-laced signs that warn members of the GLBTQ community that without knee-bending, altar-calling repentance and rejection of a sinful lifestyle they are on the fast track to hell - that you have to pass a sexual orientation test to pass throught he narrow gates of heaven. At least, that is their interpretation of God’s word. Not that many years ago, particularly in the Deep South, the Bible was misused to justify segregation, and before that, slavery. While their decision to crash Friday’s solemn event was somewhat despicable, considering that it became a vigil to remember the 49 innocent lives slaughtered in Orlando, at least they refrained from the shocking, hate-mongering rhetoric that has come out of the mouths of some pulpit loons in the Excited States of America in wake of the mass murder. Such as the nutbar Sacramento pastor who said the real tragedy is that more of them didn’t die. And another who said the he was upset the shooter didn’t finish the job. Then there was the pastor who said the (U.S.) government should round up all LGBTQ people and blow their brains out. And that
is mild when measured against the naked hatred spewed by Florida-based Westboro Baptist lunatics who stage loud protests at funerals. One thing that stood out at Friday’s event was a lesson on tolerance given by the LGBTQ community and their supporters. The annoying “bible thumpers” who crashed their event, while not appreciated, were accepted for who they are. TRIVIA ANSWER: From 1904 until 1962 the Salvation Army Citadel was on the north side of First street, just west of Pitt street. The site is now a municipal parking lot. The Army relocated to a new building at Fifth and York streets. The Corps came to Cornwall in 1888 and held services in a building on Water Street. The Corps band was a regular Sunday night fixture at Pitt and Second streets. In the late 1880s, Salvation Army founder Gen. William Booth visited the local congregation and spent several days in the town. TRIVIA: In 1979 the local chapter of this women’s organization held its final dinner meeting during which it turned in its charter. It was formed in 1949 with 52 members. It looked after the interests of local mothers and widows of local servicemen killed in the Second World War. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: Television circa 1957 - The morning kids shows that included Buffalo Bob, a puppet called Howdy Doody, Clarabelle (who never talked until the final episode) and the peanut gallery. Capt. Kangaroo, Mister Green Jeans and Grandfather Clock. Bozo the Clown. ... The Friday night boxing cards from Madison Square Garden on the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports which opened with the snappy “Look Sharp/Be Sharp March” tune. MULTISPORT CLUB: Kids’ event promotes healthy lifestyles CORNWALL, Ontario – All youngsters come away winners during the Cornwall Multisport Club Kids’ Day. From tiny tykes ages six and under, through to 16-year-olds, this year’s popular event will be held Saturday, July 9 at Lamoureux Park and is free to everyone in the community. “We really want to encourage parents to bring their youngsters down to the park for it,” encouraged Kathleen Hay, race director. “The event is meant to encourage kids’ to become physically active, but it also promotes important qualities like good sportsmanship and fair play. “Plus, it’s tons of fun, too.” The CMC club has organized the event for several years, and members eagerly look forward to it every summer. It is a kid-friendly morning that is specifically designed to encourage participation in a positive, non-competitive atmosphere geared towards all levels of physical ability. “For instance, not only do we have awards for each age group, but every participant who crosses the finish line receives a finishers’ medal,” she added. “They take such pride in this, it’s a real sense of accomplishment for them, and they’ll end up wearing it the whole day. “It’s great to see them running across the finish line with big smiles on their faces.” In addition, club members also volunteer as pace bunnies for the events. This ensures that
no participant is left behind on the course, and that there’s someone there to see they get over the finish. Kids’ of all levels of physical fitness are encouraged to register and no special equipment is required except a pair of running shoes. “You see the pacer run up with the kids, then step back as the kids would cross the finish on their own. It’s a very positive thing for participants.” Registration takes place from 10 – 10:20 a.m. at the bandshell. It will take place rain or shine. Those interested may also sign-up in advance by visiting www.cornwallmultisportclub.com/ cmckids.shtml. The race routes are all in Lamoureux Park and around the bandshell area. Distances vary from 700 metres (6 and under), 1.25 km (7-9), 2.5 km (10-12) to 3.75 km (13 +). It is very important to remember, however, that any child is welcome to run a shorter distance if they prefer: participation and fun are the names of this game. Events for ages 6 and under begin at 10:30 From tiny tykes ages six and under, through to 16-year-olds, this year’s popular event will be held Saturday, July 9 at Lamoureux Park and is free to everyone in the a.m., with all other age groups as listed to follow. community. Play to your strengths able to adapt to different situations. Golfers who don’t have a powerful swing can often compensate with precision. For example, it’s always possible to have a par score with a well-placed approach shot or a long putt. On the other hand, those who can drive long distances often have to rely on luck with their short game or their putter. In the end, all that really counts is the result. Don’t forget: apart from power and precision, the mental aspect of the game counts for a lot. Golfers who can concentrate despite all kinds of disturbances, and those who can quickly turn the page and get on with their game after missing a shot have a great asset in their bag.

Do you have a powerful drive? Do you find long iron shots easy? Are your approach shots precise? Can you handle a putter with assurance? If you’ve replied in the affirmative to all these questions, you must be a professional! Indeed, very few golfers can boast of possessing all these skills. How many times have you heard golfers returning to the clubhouse saying they would have had a better score if they hadn’t missed some drives or some threefoot putts. Some grump about their lack of power, while for others it’s their poor performance on the green that ruins their score card. Every golfer finds it difficult to really master all aspects of their game. The important thing to remember is to play to your strengths and be

STREAKS
Streaks are embarrassing evidence that we didn’t get it clean—they’re dirt or soap left on the surface, and they really stand out because they reflect light differenctly from the clean, well-rinsed rest of it. Streaks can also result from too much cleaning solution, always follow the
recommended amounts and directions. From missed areas while washing, and even from an over wet rag. I’ve avoided streaks by following 1. Clean thoroughly and rinse thoroughly; 2. Overlap strokes when wiping, to make sure you don’t leave any missed areas; 3. All reflective surfaces should be dried with a cloth, not left to air dry.

Two iconic international sporting figures are gone Two iconic international sporting figures are no longer with us. This is a big loss for everyone, not just the sporting community. I am, of course, referring to Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest heavyweight boxing champion whose fists and irrepressible personality transcended sports and captivated the world. Ali left us on June 3 and before he passed away, he had immaculately planned his own funeral arrangements. His funeral procession and memorial service
was held in Louisville, Kentucky. Ali, as he constantly claimed, was certainly the “greatest.” United States President Barack Obama openly declared: “His jabs knocked some sense into us,” the president said. “He pushed us to expand our imagination and bring others into our understanding.” Obama called added Ali was America. Not only the rich and powerful were drawn to Ali. He was also a big hero to the poor and
forgotten. The second iconic figure we lost recently was Gordie Howe, the greatest hockey player his native Canada has known. As a superb hockey player, Howe, often known and respected as Mr. Hockey, died at the age of 88. Even until his death, he never refused to sign autographs for his numerous fans. I am not a big hockey fan, to me Howe was soft-spoken, gracious, humble and also funny. Even a fellow hockey player, Wayne Gretzky admitted Howe was the “greatest player ever.”
Another hockey player Bobby Orr said Howe was the best that ever played. Suffering from dementia, Howe had a serious stroke in October 2014. But, he never gave up living. Howe was honoured at a dinner and had a rink named after him in his home town of Saskatoon last February. Howe played 1,767 games in the National Hockey League, more than anyone else. The world lost two fine men who made a huge difference in the sporting world. To two fine gentlemen, I say rest in peace.

Great work being done: Last year, Hoople Creek Farms donated plants for the Agapè Centre’s garden to grow produce for the food bank and soup kitchen. But this year, they want to get more hands dirty. The small-scale family farm in Ingleside’s owner/operators Judy Horvath and Jamie Creskey gave eight families enough seedlings to plant their own gardens to grow food to be donated the Agapè Centre.

During his physical, the doctor asked the patient about his daily activity level. He described a typical day this way: “Well, yesterday afternoon, I waded along the edge of a lake, drank eight beers, escaped from wild dogs in the heavy brush, jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand and took four leaks behind big trees.” Inspired by the story, the doctor said, “You must be one hell of an outdoors man!” ”NAH,” he replied, “I’m just a crappy golfer.”

Gardening Tip for Mid to Late Summer ~ There are a number of ways you can make your garden wildlife-friendly as the summer progresses. By implementing the steps below, you can make your yard healthier and more vibrant, while helping provide shelter and food for a number of different species. * Water your lawn deeply (2.5 centimetres of water in the morning) once a week or when necessary to prevent evaporation and fungus * If your water supply is limited, you may safely let your lawn go brown, as this is a natural and protective dormancy that lasts until your grass is revived by rainy weather * Mulch garden beds to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and nourish the soil * Maintain your grass at 5 cm to 8 cm high to better withstand drought and compete with weeds * Compost your kitchen and yard waste to make “gardeners’ gold”, a nutrient-rich soil amendment

Hat-tip to researchers and people whosupport MS patients: A new Canadian treatment for late-stage multiple sclerosis patients was the talk of the Joan Pearson Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament, named after Pearson who helped countless MS patients in the region, was abuzz concerning a treatment where doctors harvest stem cells from the bone marrow of their pats. The Justice Building on Pitt Street was vibrant with colour on Friday but the tone was wrought with emotion at a public vigil held to remember and honour the victims of the Orlando shooting at Pulse Nightclub.
