CORNWALL, Ontario - On Sunday, July 17, the Army, Navy and Airforce Club in Cornwall was the site of an expression of love and support for the family of five-year-old Lily Douglass. Lily was diagnosed with stage four childhood rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS cancer) at the beginning of June.
Tanya Vierling, a close friend of the Douglass family organised the fundraiser to alleviate some of the burden on the family. “I had a sick infant a few years ago,” Vierling said. “My husband and I vowed to not let another family go through that.” The money raised on Sunday would go to cover the travel expenses of Lily’s family as they travel

back and forth between Ottawa and Toronto for their daughter’s treatment. Lily’s mother Nancy Ravary is not working so she can stay at home with her daughter while she is being treated for her disease. Lily’s father, Ryan, said that he was overwhelmed with the unsolicited support his family has gotten from their friends and community. “They really rallied behind us,” he said. “The help is very appreciated. Whe haven’t had to organise events like these by ourselves and it has given us time to focus on what we needed to focus on.” Childhood RMS cancer presents as an unusual, fast growing lump on a child’s body. Lily’s parent’s originally thought that she had a bug bite on her

Lily’s parents say that her cancer is being treated aggressivley. Her father Ryan said that originally they were frequently commuting to Toronto for treatment, but that thanks to coordination between the Ottawa and Toronto campuses of CHEO, Lily is now able to receive her treatment closer to home. about the fundraiser as well as the Canadian Diabetes Association itself, and locating resources surrounding the condition. All volunteers were there to support those they knew suffering from diabetes, and were grateful for any support from the community by attending or assisting with the event. “Cornwall is a very giving community,” said volunteer Vanessa Regnier, “Hopefully this is the first one [fundraiser] of many.” Members of the Association and volunteers say they look forward to holding another fundraiser next year and thank participants for their support. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Canadian Diabetes Association held its first annual golf tournament in Cornwall on Friday, July 15 at Archie’s Family Golf Centre, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event consisted of free reign of the multiple golf options and mini-golf available at the location. A one-hour show provided by trick shot artist Todd Keirstead, and a silent auction. Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocer, St. Albert’s Cheese, Boston Pizza, Rurban, Strathmore, and Somersby provided food and beverages for attendees and volunteers. According to organizer Linda Rogers, the fundraiser’s opening event held special significance in the organization’s celebration of the 95th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. The goal of the Canadian Diabetes
Association was not only to raise funds, but to encourage interest and understanding. “It’s good to raise awareness. People don’t realise the important role it plays, and how serious it is,” said Anne Charlebois, a participant who has multiple family members with diabetes. Her sister Helen Charlebois, a dietitian with the Diabetes Educator section of the Association in Ottawa who also attended the event added, “I’m quite involved because it’s very personal in my family. We’re running out of funds, and I think the research is very important because…it’s a lifelong battle. They need support, so I think it’s very important to do a lot of fundraising and try to get more money for diabetes and just for diabetes care in general.” Volunteers from Scotiabank were present in the tent offering information and handing out brochures advertising more

A Cornwall sports legend will be recognized on Thursday with the unveiling of a new provincial plaque and a community celebration in his honour. Cornwall City Council has proclaimed Thursday as Newsy Lalonde Day in Cornwall and there are a number special events planned to mark the occasion. Residents are invited to join in the festivities taking place on the arena floor of the Cornwall Civic Complex from 10 am - 2 pm. “It’s going to be a great celebration of hockey and one of our hometown heroes,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. The highlight of the day will be the unveiling of a new provincial plaque recognizing Édouard Newsy Lalonde as one of the original ‘Flying Frenchmen’ from hockey’s early days. The ceremony will be held at 11 am and it is being coordinated by the Ontario Heritage Trust in partnership with the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame and the City of Cornwall. In addition to the plaque unveiling, there will be a number of free activities (subject to change) for visitors to enjoy including: - An appearance by Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur. - A display by the Hockey Hall of Fame featuring various NHL player awards and artifacts belonging to Newsy Lalonde. - A display of photographs of Newsy Lalonde spanning his career. - An appearance by Spartacat of the Ottawa Senators (from 12 pm - 1 pm). - Tours of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame. - Appearances by players and staff of the Colts and River Kings and draws for various prizes. - A hardest shot booth by Own the Ice Hockey. - The Cornwall Fire Service’s inflatable firehouse and an appearance by Sparky. - Face painting for the children. - Much more! Visitors will also receive a Newsy Lalonde souvenir postcard (while supplies last). Born in 1887, Newsy Lalonde is regarded as one of hockey’s and lacrosse’s greatest players of the first half of the 20th century and one of sport’s most colourful characters. He was a member of the first Montreal Canadiens team to win the Stanley Cup in 1916. From 1910 to 1954, he held the record for the most goals scored by a major league hockey player, including his pre-NHL totals—455 goals, a record later broken by Maurice Richard. In 1950, Lalonde was named athlete of the half century in lacrosse. He was also elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1950, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1965, and the Sports Hall of Fame of Canada. He had lit the torch when the Sports Hall of Fame opened in Toronto in August 1955.

Diving skills on show at Reg Campbell Park Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s youth were showing off their diving skills at the diving competition in Reg Campbell Park on Friday, July 15. Five teams of kids took to the diving board to demonstrate what they had learned over their two week introduction to diving course organized by the Cornwall Aquatic Centre. There was a total of 31 children divided across the five teams competing in the competition. Each team was based out of one of Cornwall’s outdoor pools and represented that pool in the competition. The teams were St. Francis, Mattice,
St. Joseph, Terry Fox and Reg Campbell. Every competitor had the opportunity to perform two dives and had two tries per-dive. Each participant received a ribbon for participating. David Dubinsky of the Terry Fox team said he felt ready to dive, but that adaptability was key. “Its a lot different than at the Terry Fox pool because the board here is higher,” said Dubinsky referring to the diving board at Reg Campbell park. “When you go into different pools you have to be prepared.” Dubinsky had four other teammates with him on the Terry Fox team, Brayden Brunet, Hannah Lalonde and Anna White along with their coach
and lifeguard Mike Brie who kept a watchful eye over them while they dived. The diving competition is an annual event which celebrates the end of the diving training camp and Cornwall’s outdoor pools. David Dubinsky, Brayden Brunet, Hannah Lalonde and Anna White made up the competitors of the Terry Fox team. They stand alongside Michael Brie, their coach and lifeguard at Reg Campbell pool during the diving competiton organized by the Cornwall Aquatic Centre (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). Cornwall Claymores win their first ever home game CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Claymores under-18 girls rugby team won their first home game ever against the Barrhaven Scottish with a score of 26 to 19 Saturday, July 16, in front of a crowd at the Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School field. This is the first time there has been a U-18 girls rugby team representing Cornwall and area. The Claymores play in the Junior Female Division of the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union. The team is coached by Mike Smith and Casey Leger. Both men coach locally at the high school level. The Claymores are affiliated with the Cornwall Crusaders, the local men’s rugby club. Both Smith and Leger have ties to the men’s team. “The team is made up of girls from the St. Joe’s,
Holy Trinity, and Tagwi high school rugby teams,” said Coach Leger. “But most of them come from S, D & G Championship team, St. Joe’s. Two of the girls from the Claymores play for the Eastern Ontario U16 rugby team who just won gold at the Eastern Canadian Rugby Championship. The Claymores have played two matches at Twin Elm Rugby Park in Nepean and are looking for their first win at home.” “This is a brand new team, made up three different high school teams playing against well established clubs,” said Coach Smith. “We are slowly getting better. The last match the team put four tries on the scoreboard; compared to only one for the first game.” The season has the 25 member team play six regular season games throughout the summer with finals at the end of August. the new Cornwall side, teams from Ottawa, Brockville, Kingston and Gatineau make up the league. Rugby is the fourth most popular team sport in the world; with 15 players per side and two thirty minute halves for the U-18s. In North America it is played on a football field and is not unlike football where a try or touchdown is five points and a kicked convert is two. There are no pads and there are a lot more tackles and hits between players on the field. Rugby will debut as an Olympic sport this summer;

although, it will be the fast-paced, seven player a side rugby that is played for seven minute halves. “We are still hoping to grow the team and the culture of rugby in Cornwall,” said Smith. Practices are Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. on the TR Leger (General Vanier) field next to St. Joseph Secondary School. “All girls who think they are tough enough to play rugby are welcome to come out to practice. It’s one of the only sports that allows full contact for women. Bring cleats and mouth guards,” Smith continued.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Knights of Columbus will be holding the Knights of Columbus Hospice Golf Classic in support of Hospice Cornwall on Friday, August 12 at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. The local Knights of Columbus councils and 200 golfers will be raising money for much needed equipment at the Cornwall hospice. Equipment the Knights hope to provide include chairs lifts, therapeutic mattresses, a Hoyer lift to lift patients out of beds, etc. Since Hospice Cornwall opened in 2009 it has provided end-of-life care to over 800 residents, but the number of residents seeking care far exceeds that number. So far this year, Hospice Cornwall has received over 1, 400 referrals. The average stay for a patient at Hospice Cornwall is 16 and a half days and the most common reason for admission is cancer. Registration Now Open Registration fees are $125 per golfer, which includes breakfast, 18 holes, cart, lunch and a buffet meal. Registration is available online on the Team Cornwall website. “Each year we host several people from out of town to showcase our community,” says Mr. Gault. “These visitors return back to their home communities with a positive experience about what Cornwall has to offer.” Team Cornwall is a unique organization that exists to spread the word about Cornwall’s positive attributes as a city in which to live and do business. Team Members use their own networks to deliver timely information about the community and its growing development opportunities, and in doing so, act as ambassadors for the City’s economic development effort. The proceeds of the tournament will go towards offsetting the costs of Team Cornwall’s ambassadorial efforts. The notfor-profit organization hosts a number of events throughout the year and maintains a popular website. In addition, Team Members travel the world to promote Cornwall, at their own cost. Politics the American way Claude McIntosh Sitting outside their trailer at a local campsite as the sun slowly surrendered to dusk, the visitors from the U.S. pulled no punches when it came to telling the inquisitive Canadian who they support in the November presidential election. “Trump ... all the way,” said Sid, with his wife’s nod of approval. “He’s going to beat Hillary, easily.” He continues: “Look, the Clintons are crooks and Hillary is a liar. She can’t be trusted. Look at that email scandal. The scary thing about Hillary is that she believes her lies.” The right to bear arms is a big issue with Sid, a military veteran. “They (left wing Democrats) want to take away our guns. Then only the bad guys will have guns. That won’t happen with Trump.” When it comes to immigration, Trump’s idea of a wall is music to Sid’s ears. “It can’t be high enough,” he said. “Let them (illegals) get in line like everybody else. Same with those Syrian refugees.” And that, he said, is why many Democrats are closet Trump supporters: guns and immigration. Trump, he said, would be good for Canada because he supports “that pipeline.” Unlike many Americans, Sid and Carol are familiar with Canada. They keep up on what is going on in Canada by watching the CBC at their home near the Vermont border. They liked Stephen Harper but are not sure about Justin Trudeau. “Too much like our guy (Obama).” They call Canada a great neighbour and Ontarians friendly. Just one complaint - gas prices: They’re too high. “If they raised gas prices in the States the way yours are raised there would be riots,” said
Sid. “You’re getting gouged.” That, said Sid, is something he doesn’t understand about Canadians. “You should be raising hell. You guys are too nice. You need a guy like Trump.” ************************************* A devoted family man and good police officer who went about the job in a quiet, conscientious manner is how former colleague Deputy Chief Danny Aikman described retired Cornwall Police Service officer Ron Swerdfeger who died Friday after a short struggle with cancer. He was 66. He joined the force on Dec. 1, 1970 and retired in July 1999. Swerdfeger spent two years with the city’s bylaw enforcement office after he retired from CPS. He was one of the last members of the old city police traffic unit (members wore a white cover on their caps) which investigated all traffic accidents, major and fender benders. The unit was mothballed several years ago and traffic investigations were absorbed by regular patrol units. ************************************* J.P. (Pete) Leclair recalls that 40 years ago this month the flame for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games arrived at city hall on its way to Kingston where the sailing events were being held. He remembers because he was a member of the torch relay team. He was the runner who carried the flame to the front steps of city hall where it remained overnight. His long-time friend, Kevin Parkinson, was also on the relay team. Each torch bearer ran one kilometre. Leclair and Parkinson still have the torch they carried. Each runner kept theirs as a souvenir, along with the relay team shorts and t-shirt. ************************************* Not sure what this means, if anything, but three of the four smartest presidents - in terms
of IQ scores - are Democrats, all of recent vintage: 1) Bill Clinton 156, 2) Jimmy Carter 153 and 4) Barack Obama 145. Teddy Roosevelt (Republican) is third with a score of 149. No surprise that one of the lowest scoring presidents is George Dubya Bush who comes in at 124, six points below the senior Bush. Ronald Reagan had a 130 score, which put him in the gifted category. Before anyone starts dumping on Dubya and calling him a dummy, consider this: 100 is considered average, which means a lot of people calling Dubya (124) dumb have a lower IQ. When it comes to the world of professional athletes, Reggie Jackson hits a grand slam with 160. One of the highest IQs in Hollywood belongs to James Wood. His 180 puts him in the top 1%. Also in the genius category are Steve Martin 142 and Jodie Foster 140. And are you sitting down? Arnold Schwarzenegger’s IQ is 135.
One other thing. Somebody calculated that the average serial killer has an IQ of 110. Ted Bundy scored 123 and Charles Manson had 121. TRIVIA ANSWER: The Conservatory of Music was in the former Trinity Anglican Church Hall at Augustus street and Trinity avenue. The building was destroyed by fire on May 22, 1962. A senior housing high rise now occupies the property. TRIVIA: Only two Cornwall mayors have won three consecutive terms. Who are they? THIS AND THAT SEEN AND HEARD: The Ontario debt is creeping up to $300 billion. That is about $21,000 for every man, woman and child in the province. California, which has a larger economy and much bigger population, is in hock to the tune of $145 billion, about $3,900 per person. Throw in the federal debt and the per capita debt for Ontario climbs to $38,400. ... Instead of a forecast calling for 30% chance of rain, why can’t they put a positive spin on it and call for 70% chance of sunshine?
be a thing of the past? Why am I so concerned about the cost? In this last budget, as I was reading it online, Tourism was cut by $20, 000 and when I questioned some Councillors I was told that they and Administration had made a mistake, (really). And you expect the same services? My biggest disappointment was that Mark MacDonald, who
represents Tourism, uttered not a word pro or con. As for the location, the North - South corridor on Brookdale will soon see the heaviest traffic in years with the new bridge to and from the 401 to the USA, and from the USA into Canada. The present location is ideal. Syd Gardiner.
Dear Editor: There were two reasons that I attended Monday nights City Council meeting. As a former city Councillor with two terms on the Tourism Board I am concerned at the cost of moving Tourism to the Civic Complex and the location. As a board member I looked into the past history of Tourism in Cornwall and this is what concerns me. Previously, when Tourism, under the control of the Economic Development Department was

budgeted, the cost then was $300, 000. That did not include the cost of the salaries and benefits of the three Municipal Employees who administered the Tourism programs. I wonder if today’s Councillors were made aware of those facts. During my time as a member of the Committee, the entire budget was $181, 000 including employee salaries and benefits. In the last four to five years, Tourism found efficiencies and never asked for any increases to our budget.I am concerned that the no budget increase will

LONG SAULT, Ontario - Train enthusiasts were out in full force this past weekend as the Seaway Train Show rolled into town, taking place at the Long Sault Arena on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. In its fifth year, the show is put on by The Seaway Lighthouse 3rd Rail modular club, a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of model railroading through the collection of memorabilia and toy trains. Event organizer, Marie Morrell, was happy with this year’s turnout and said “It keeps getting bigger every year and this year, for the first time, we actually had a ride-on train outside for the kids and people really liked that.” Vendors and exhibitors came from all over the province, as well as Quebec and New York State and the family event included train displays, memorabilia for sale, as well as face painting for kids, and raffles throughout both days which raised money for Parade of Nations for the Developmentally Challenged. Steve Skerry is the president of the Seaway Valley Model Railroaders and was an exhibitor at the Train Show for the fourth time. He said he enjoys attending because “Talking to people about trains and model railroads gets them interested and involved. Especially with kids, which is the fun part, seeing them get excited is just great”. Close to 30 vendors and almost 20 exhibitors took part in this year’s show and Morrell was happy with the high attendance numbers saying “Train shows are a big thing for enthusiasts and we are happy that we can bring that community together.”

FRIDAY NIGHT CONCERT AND TATTOO
Kelli Trottier originally from Dunvegan will be the Guest Fiddler for the Scottish Fiddle events at this year’s Games. There will be lots of opportunities to experience Kelli’s talented fiddling on Friday afternoon in the Metcalfe Centre and the Arena Hall, and then on Saturday when she conducts two fiddle workshops in the morning and leads a fiddle ceilidh in the afternoon. The Arena Hall will be jumping when Kelli takes to the stage. Kelli has been nominated three times for fiddle player of the Year by the Canadian Country Music Association and has been inducted into the Ottawa Valley Country Music Hall of Fame and the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame. She toured North America and beyond with the sensational Bowfire entourage as one of their select virtuoso fiddlers. She has played fiddle for the NHL, our Canadian Military in Alert and the Middle East ,and performed for Sir Sean Connery in New York City and for his private 80th birthday Celebration in the Bahamas. There’s much more fiddling at the Games with the Youth Fiddlers Showcase on Friday afternoon and the Massed Fiddlers on Centre Stage just before the Tattoo. Saturday offers the two fiddling workshops and a fiddle ceilidh capped off by another massed fiddlers performance all in the Arena Hall.
Heavyweight Competitions Always a Crowd Pleaser For great spectator events at the Games outside of the massed bands, the heavyweight events can’t be beat. The events are part of Scotland’s history when in early days, the young people of Scottish clans competed to prove who was the strongest, most agile and

An Orphan Harp Comes to the Games A very melodic and interesting addition to the Games in recent years is the Harp Workshop. This year’s guest harpist is singer/ songwriter Martha Gallagher who plays not just any harp, but plays a one-of-a kind Orphan Harp, named Hope, must be seen and heard! In college, Martha fell in love with the Celtic harp. She built her first harp and taught herself to play. Martha Gallagher also known as the Adirondack Harper has delighted audiences with her distinctive and richly varied performances for over 35 years. She has a diverse musical background; from classical flautist with a symphony orchestra to lead singer in rock and jazz/blues bands. Martha has toured around the US and Canada and has performed with such celtic luminaries as The Chieftains. She has produced and recorded six CDs on her indie label Singing Strings. Join Martha in her workshop on Friday, July 29 from 11am until 12:30 pm. Bring your harp or join the audience and also learn about the Orphan Harp.

skillful. Many of the events were based on the occupations of the time – farmer, soldier, blacksmith and forester. These traditional competitions have evolved into today’s heavyweight events of the hammer toss, sheaf toss, and of course, tossing the caber. The caber is the most well known and popular of the heavyweight Scottish events. The competitor must pick up the caber, run, and toss it so that it does a 90 degree turn and lands straight out from him/her at a 12 o’clock position. The caber is tossed for accuracy, not distance. The caber ranges from 18 to 26 feet and can weigh from (approximately) 100 to 150 lbs. Getting the heavyweight events rolling at the Games early at 8 am on Friday, July 29th are the Amateurs who compete in the same events as the Professionals and hope one day to join them. Later at 10 am in the Women’s Professionals, fans will be cheering on Lisa MacDonald of Alexandria and Laura Reusser now from Bow Island, Alberta but originally from Martintown. They will have stiff competition as the perennial winner, the colourful Josee Morneau from Winnipeg Manitoba, returns to defend her title. In the afternoon, the Masters start at 1 pm and these veteran competitors will show that they have not forgotten the techniques that made them champions a few years ago. The crowd will be looking for Ron Graham of Apple Hill and former champion George Chiappa of Ottawa to bring in good results. On Saturday July 30th, professional heavyweights from British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New York and England will put their best efforts forth in the Canadian Scottish Professional Heavyweight
great music include the Brigadoons, Bob and Ducky, and Stewart’s Glen with Tattoo headliners Coig and the McLean Avenue Band adding their talents to the mix. See the Games website for a full list of the best in Glengarry entertainment at the Games.

What is it about celtic music that when its solid rhythms, upbeat tempos and catchy melodies start up, that people are compelled to clap their hands and tap their feet and start dancing. It doesn’t matter if you know the dance, join the fun on the dance floor and before you know it, you’ll be dancing like a pro. There will be tons of opportunities at this year’s Games to try out your dance steps as celtic bands perform both days starting at 1pm Friday in the Metcalfe Centre and later in both the Centre and the Tents until 1am and 2am respectively. The great music continues on Saturday where things start up at 2pm in the Tents and the Metcalfe Centre and continue all day with just a break for the massed bands and Closing Ceremonies. The night comes to an early end at 10pm. Championship. Local favourite Jason Baines Perennial favourites providing this year’s from Dalkeith will be among the nine athletes who will try to unseat current Canadian and Maxville record holder Matthew Doherty of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Marching to a different beat The Games has heavyweight events for all ages. Those in training include the Marchant au rythme Intermediate competitors, 13-17 years, and the Juniors, ages 12 and under, who compete on Saturday starting at 9:30am.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Representatives from Beyond 21 and Pommier Jewellers gathered in Pommier Square to announce on Thursday that the Square would play host to the Kinsmen Family Zone at this year’s Food Fest. The second annual Cornwall Food Fest will take place on Saturday, August 20 on Pitt Street between First and Third Streets between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Over 30 vendors, 16 food vendors, face painting and artists will be lining Pitt Street. Entertainment will include a Princess in the Family Zone, a magician and acts such Eric and Grace Willison, the Night Hawks and Bang on the Ear just to name a few. Beyond 21 is partnering with CoTiCon this year, which is taking place on the same day. CoTiCon, which is an anime and cosplay convention, is sending a regiment of Imperial Storm Troopers to parade up Pitt Street in support of the Food Fest. Beyond 21 operates a support program for adults over the age of 21 who have developmental disabilities. A new feature at this year’s Food Fest will be the Beyond 21 Ambassadors. The Ambassadors will be in purple shirts and will be walking around the festival informing people on the
importance of the event and of the work Beyond 21 does in the community. “We want people to know that their support really makes an impact,” Beyond 21’s People Connector Dana Bingley said. “That hot dog they’re buying makes a difference.” Bingley went on to say that all of these different groups coming together in support of a common cause is at the heart of what Beyond 21 is all about. “Community is really the heart of Beyond 21,” she said. “Bringing community together really fits with out mandate.” Tish Humphries, the President of Beyond 21’s Board of Directors said that the work that her organization does relieves a lot of pressure in the lives of some families. “So many families are suffering in silence because they don’t get the support they need,” she said. “We are here to provide support while they care for their loved one 24/7.” Andre Pommier of Pommier Jewellers said that he is happy to support Beyond 21 and provide the use of Pommier Square for community events like Food Fest. “We are committed to our community,” Pommier said. “This event really touches home because they chose the downtown and it is so fun to promote it. That is why we wanted to provide Pommier Square.”

4. Profitez des services en ligne. Lorsque vous achetez votre billet, choisissez votre type

Canadian Cowgirls on show at Avonmore Fair love with the being on the team,” said Bray. The Canadian Cowgirls of Chatham are an elite precision riding team. Dressed in shining costumes they perform a variety of precise musical drills. “I think that is what attracted me to the team, the pageantry and the pride we all share carrying our Country’s flag,” Bray said. The team has a variety of breeds of horses including the American Quarter Horse, the Appaloosa, Arabians and Paints. Bray rides a blue-eyed American Paint horse. “His name is Frankie, after Mr. Blue eyes himself Frank Sinatra,” Bray said. “Frankie likes to keep me on my toes and I like the challenge of getting him to adapt to new surroundings.” “I love to spend time and travel with my horse. I admire the teamwork it takes to be a successful rider. We all become family after travelling across North America hauling eight to 18 horses,” Bray continued. The Canadian Cowgirls performed on Saturday night and before the Fair’s closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Back to back champions The Seaway Valley U15 Regional Blazers have won back to back tournament championships after winning the Ambassador Cup in Kingston Ontario over the July 9, 10 weekend. In the opening game, the Blazers defeated the East Gwillimbury Falcons by a score of 3 to 0. The Blazers also won their second game of the day by a score of 5 to 1 against the Rockwood Football Club. An early evening game on Saturday saw the Blazers with a 0 to 0 draw against Southend United from London, ON, with a convincing 5-0 win against Mount Hamilton on Sunday morning, the U15 Blazers secured themselves a spot in the playoff round. The semi-final would see the Seaway Club with a rematch against the tough London squad.
Nevertheless, the Blazers would secure the win and their place in the final with a 2-1 win. Having to play in the U16 division, the U15 Blazers were faced with the challenge of playing their own club in the final, the U16 Seaway Valley Blazers. In a Blazer vs Blazer showdown, the U15 squad played a patient game and found the back of the net three times to take a 3-1 win against the U16 Girls claiming their second consecutive tournament championship. The U15 Blazers put up some impressive numbers during the weekend tournament. The team went undefeated scoring a total of 18 goals and giving up only two. In league play, they continue to battle for top spot in the East Region Soccer League U15 Regional Division.

SVTC new production “Rumors” opens this week Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - Don’t believe everything you hear. A husband lay dying and a wife goes missing the night that they are to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, in the Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s upcoming production of the Neil Simon farce, Rumors, opening this week. Rumour has it that Simon, better known as a contemporary comedy writer, was in a funk at the time this particular play was written, and purposely penned his first farce to cheer himself up, explained this production’s director, Grant Reso. Invited guests are gathering for the party of Charlie and Myra, while their lawyer and his wife scramble to get their story straight. And,
of course, the chaos crescendos from there like any farce worth its weight, explains Reso. “It was very challenging to cast this show as there were so many talented people who came out and auditioned,” he said. “In the end, I couldn’t imagine having this show cast any other way. They’re all absolutely talented and really contribute to SVTC’s reputation of having great performers. The cast of ten includes a great mix of veterans and newcomers, alike - Justin Poirier as Ken Gorman, Anna Villeneuve as Chris Gorman, Alison Latimer as Claire Ganz, Paul Aubin as Lenny Ganz, Cameron MacPhee as Glenn Cooper, Melanie Samis as Cassie Cooper, Jill Leclair as Cookie Cusack, Corey Disotell as Ernie Cusack, Terry Mazerolle as Officer Welch and Krystal Taillon as Officer Pudney. “Justin and Jill are relatively new to the
theatre company. They both had a big break in our production of the musical ‘Into the Woods.’ This is Anna Villeneuve’s second play; she’s (best known) for doing our kids shows and musical.” This is Reso’s second time in the director’s chair, having called the shots, for the first time, last year, in Figments. He credits his “codirector,” David Barnes, and producer, Matt Latimer, for their hard work and support in putting the show together. “I couldn’t have done it without them.” He also notes that the play does have some adult content and is for mature audiences, with language that is not suitable for anyone under 14. Rumors runs July 22, 23, 24 (matinee), 29 and 30, at The Old Canal Theatre (formerly Dream Builder Studio), on Second Street West. For further information, or for tickets, visit www.svtc. ca.

House of Refuge Memorial to be placed July 23 Todd Lihou CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s Little Historian has unveiled some big news. Sara Lauzon said Thursday she has not only raised the $5,000 necessary to erect a permanent memorial for the remains of as many as 29 people that died decades ago at what was once the House of Refuge...but also that the memorial will be in place July 23 at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery. “Definitely this summer,” gushed Lauzon, who spent the better part of a year providing walking tours, holding rain-soaked yard sales and a host of
other events to raise the money for the memorial. “I’m really excited for this,” said Lauzon, who has made it her passion to tell the stories of the more than 900 inmates at the House of Refuge, that was once located on Eleventh Street. The property now houses a long-term care facility.“I’m so thankful for the community for having my back.” In the early part of the 20th Century officials at the House of Refuge would often bury the bodies of deceased inmates on the property. The House of Refuge was known as a place for the less fortunate. In 1985 when nearby homes were being built
as many as 29 bodies from the property were removed and interred at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery, west of Long Sault. The Kaneb Family purchased the plots at the cemetery. Recently city council authorized the mayor and clerk to sign documentation to allow for the creation of the memorial, and Lauzon said the Kanebs are also providing their consent to the plan. “Everyone is on board with this,” she said. Brunet Monuments in Cornwall has been retained to create the memorial, which will likely measure three feet by 1.5 feet and will contain a message concerning the House of Refuge and its
inmates. There is no tombstone marking the new graves at the cemetery - something Lauzon has worked to change. “This broke my heart,” said Lauzon. “Since the beginning of my research with this facility, I have known that bodies were uncovered from the property on two occasions.” She confirmed that information last year when she visited the cemetery and pored over their records. The remains were reburied in a western section of the cemetery, near the St. Lawrence River, said Lauzon.

The pain is now mine, you are set free, I love you, and miss you, my sweet Marley. “A very special thank you to Dr. Ian MacNaughton and his team. The kindness and compassion that was extended to Marley and me, during his two month battle, is greatly appreciated. Mike Hogan was awarded the 2016 Men’s Championship at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club Here’s a few tips to help control the mosquito population in your back yard this summer: • Destroy or dispose of tin cans, old tires, buckets and similar water-holding containers.• Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outside and cover trash containers to keep out rainwater. • Clean clogged roof gutters on an annual basis. • Change water every week in birdbaths and wading pools. • Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used. • Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps and arrange them so they drain properly. • Clean animal troughs weekly. • Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days. Since mosquitoes are known to carry diseases such as the West Nile virus, canine heartworm and viral encephalitis, every preventative measure is important. With a little extra effort, summertime in the backyard can be an even more enjoyable experience.
