NEWS

Pokémon Go fever is burning hot in Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - The Pokémon Go mobile app is generating a lot of buzz in media around the world and is very much the “it” thing right now. The brand itself has been around for more than 20 years, but it is catching fire again because it is doing gaming in a new way. Pokémon Go is an iPhone game created by mobile gaming company Niantic where players walk through the real world to find and catch virtual creatures on their phone. This blending of real world movement and video games is called augmented reality, a relatively new concept to gaming that is the central feature of Pokémon Go. Pokémon Go encourages its players to leave the house and travel in the real world, sometimes long distances, to find new creatures in the game. The longer you are up and moving around, and the further you go, the more likely you are to find a new Pokémon. The game is taking over worldwide and Cornwall is no exception. Todd LeBlanc, a Pokémon Go player from Cornwall, co-founded an SD&G Pokémon Go group with Kaitlyn van Overbeek. LeBlanc says that his group currently has over 400 members. There are a lot of opportunities for eager Pokémon trainers here in Cornwall. “The best location in Cornwall when it comes

to Pokémon Go is Lamoureux Park, LeBlanc said. “There are four gyms, and approximately 11 Pokéstops between Eco Park and the RCAF wing.” The Pokémon brand had its first wave of popularity in North America in the mid-to-late nineties. At the time nearly every 11-year-old had the Pokémon trading cards and the Pokémon video game on the original Nintendo Gameboy. That legacy of popularity has definitely contributed to Pokémon Go’s current craze as a lot of players are not just teenagers, but also 20 somethings. “Certainly the attraction comes from a feeling of nostalgia,” van Overbeek said. “It’s hard to explain the feelings of heroism and adventure we had as kids, but as a child playing these games everyone had the idea that the world would have so much more wonder if we would actually capture and train Pokémon like we do in the game. Pokémon teamed up with Niantic’s augmented reality software and gave us what we’ve been looking for since we were children almost perfectly.” There has been controversy surrounding the game however. There are stories of gamers trespassing, putting themselves in harms way and even being hit by car’s in their quest to catch ‘em all. “The thing with these stories is it plays on peoples emotions if you see an article about something bad you’re more likely to share it and

(Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

give it a negative view,” LeBlanc said. “They don’t focus on the positives like the community it bring’s together a lot of these people down in the park are not people you expect to see playing Pokemon go in a park at night. Also it’s great therapy for people with depression anxiety and even getting people with mild to severe agoraphobia to step outside and interact with with world and soak up some much needed vitamin D People with social anxiety are finding a common interest to expand their social groups and

meet new people.” One feature of the game is that the in-game map incorporates important real-wolrld sites into the game. This has meant that some local businesses have seen an uptick in their trade because their shop or the area near by is now an important area for Pokémon Go players. “Businesses near Pokéstops have also seen more exposure and a lot of them work with the app to bring in younger clientele and greater profits,” said LeBlanc.

Cornwall’s own Newsy Lalonde honoured at Civic Complex Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

The Newsy Lalonde plaque was unveiled at the Civic Complex on Thursday, July 21. Newsy’s grandson Bob Quintal stands with, MPP Jim McDonell, Ontario Heritage Trust board member Jim Brownell, Newsy’s other grandson Richard Quintal, Bob’s brother, MP Guy Lauzon, Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame President Thom Racine, Francophone Affairs Assistant Deputy Minister Kelly Burke, Acting Mayor Denis Carr and Guy Lafleur (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). Richard also remembered the times when Newsy brought him and his brother into the hockey world. “We only ever saw Newsy one at a time because when he’d take us to hockey games, he could only take one, because he only had two guaranteed seats at the Montreal Forum,” said Richard. “We’d go there and everybody would be in a suit and tie and all the big names were there and they all knew Newsy, but all we knew was that

they were friends of grandpa.” Thom Racine, the incoming President of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame said that it was an honour to promote the memory of a hometown hero who never forgot Cornwall. “Not many people know that Newsy is buried right here in Cornwall in St. Columban’s Cemetery,” Racine said. “His headstone simply reads “Newsy” and if you are someone who knows where that headstone is, then you are a strong fan of sports in Cornwall.”

Lafleur said that heroes like Newsy are the kind of characters who breed the next generation of superstars. “For the kids, its important for them to identify with these players because it encourages them to success,” said Lafleur. Of the current Montreal Canadians, he said some of them do not remember figures like Newsy Lalonde, but that without men like him, they would not be where they are today.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Guy Lafleur representing the Montreal Canadians was in Cornwall on Thursday, July 21 to celebrate the memory of Cornwall’s own Eduoard “Newsy” Lalonde. At the Civic Complex, the Ontario Heritage Trust in partnership with the City of Cornwall and the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame unveiled a plaque in honour of Newsy and the other Flying Frenchmen, Jean-Baptiste “Jack” Laviolette and Didier “Cannonball” Pitre. From 1917 to 1922 Newsy played for the Montreal Canadians. In his time as a hockey player, he set several records, some of which still stand today such as his record for most goals scored in a game. Newsy Lalonde was a part of the team that won the Montreal Canadians’ first Stanley Cup. “Newsy was one of the ones that built the dynasty and made us dream of playing,” Lafleur said. “They were the franchise’s first superstars.” Newsy’s grandsons Bob and Richard Quintal, the last two living people who remember him, were on hand to share some of those memories and said that Newsy never forgot his home town. “He always considered Cornwall home,” Richard told the assembled crowd. “He didn’t speak much French, but was proud of his French heritage.” Richard explained that lacrosse was Newsy’s first love and that hockey was something that he did while waiting for the next lacrosse season.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - At their last council meeting, the Township of South Glengarry agreed to become a part of the historical map project started by their northern neighbours. “There are so many commonalities in our heritage,” said Kelli Campeau, the Township of South Glengarry’s Development and Communications Coordinator. “There has never been a resource like this map in the community before.” Campeau said that the project started in North Glengarry when the township applied for a trillium grant to start the project. Kelli’s counterpart in North Glengarry, Kerri Strotmann said that the idea for the project began at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum in Dunvegan, when a local biker stopped by asking for a map of the historical sites in the area. “People were passing through asking if there was a guided tour of the area and the idea was born from there,” Strotmann said. According to Stortmann, this project will create an unprecedented level of cooperation between North and South Glengarry’s various cultural and heritage organizations. “All of these organizations were working in silos,” she said. “Now is the perfect time to bring them together to create a comprhensive tour of all of Glengarry.” When North Glengarry conducted a workshop with local stakeholders at the end of May, the project was warmly received and ideas began to form as to how it could be implemented. One of the first and most popular ideas was the inclusion of South Glengarry because of the interconnectedness of the history of the two municipalities. Once the project got underway, a consultant firm, Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Ltd., was selected through a tender process to help bring the project to fruition. “We developed themes and stories through our working groups that we thought would be of interest to people,” said John Stewart, a Commonwealth consultant. “The idea is that you move along and come across different points of interest. It is very much a “hub and spoke” approach. We want to focus on the “Roots and Routes” of Glengarry, specifically the cultural roots and the routes around the area.” Stories of the First Nations, first settlers, Celtic heritage, folklore and legends will be some of the roots included on the guided map tour. Commonwealth Historic Resource Management has been operating as a historical consultant agency since 1984. They will be conducting a workshop in South Glengarry in August to identify locations and stories to add to the map. Those interested in attending the workshop should contact Kelli Campeau at the Township of South Glengarry.

Local marksman and Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School graduate, Mary Patrick was proud to be at the 5th annual Cornwall Lions Club Rib Fest this year. The first one the young athlete has ever had the chance to attend. ‘Unfortunately, I’ve always been gone to different shooting camps and stuff so being actually here is super amazing. So, this is my first year, and I didn’t realize how many people came out and how many vendors,” said Patrick, from her tent right next to the Lion’s bandshell stage. “The people are super awesome, and I’m glad to be a part of it.” Patrick is hoping to go to the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, along with New Zealand’s 2019 Long Range World Championship games. “I was first sponsored by the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club just a couple months ago, and ever since I’ve been coming out and helping as much as I can.” Patrick has been competing locally for six and a half years, one and a half of those years being outside of her involvement with cadets. Unlike many Olympic sports, marksmanship doesn’t have a wide following or attract large sponsorships, so Patrick is relying on the generosity of her community. Including strong support from the Seaway Lions Club, and her many fans. This year’s Rib Fest provides a great fundraising opportunity for the young athlete, as visitors can stop her booth while they enjoy countless food and drink options from other vendors, and meet with the local rising star at Lamoreaux Park.

Cornwall’s Little Historian ensures the history of the House of Refuge is never forgotten CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s Little Historian, Sara Lauzon, saw her hard work and dedication come full circle on Saturday, July 23 as a newly erected monument commemorating the lives of 29 House of Refuge inmates was unveiled to the public at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery in Ingleside. Lauzon, 26, raised $5, 000 over the course of 11 months to make the monument possible and ensure the remains were laid to rest and honoured properly. Her fundraising efforts included 15 Walking Tours of the downtown area, selling Christmas ornaments, holding lectures and giving presentations for donations, and a yard sale last August that was successful despite pouring rain on the day of the event. “I’ll never forget the community support until the day I die. I will remember this day and everyone who was here to support me through donations or just getting the story out and it’s just literally incredible,” said Lauzon. Master of Ceremonies, Thom Racine, is a retired Sergeant with the Cornwall Community Police Service and met Lauzon when she first

became involved in local history 10 years ago. Helping Lauzon with the House of Refuge Project was important to Racine and he assisted with double and triple checking facts. “We really had to be careful because there’s always going to be someone coming along with a different side to the story, so I was in essence a watch dog and I was happy to be there if she needed my help,” he said. Cornwall’s House of Refuge was built in 1913 after the Ontario government passed the Municipal House of Refuge Act in 1903 which was created to help remove severe cases of destitution from counties and towns across the region and country. As Lauzon’s website describes, those who stayed in a House of Refuge were referred to as inmates, not because they were in trouble with the law but simply because that term was used in the early 1900’s to describe someone who dwells with others in the same house. During its years of operation 906 men, women, and children sought shelter at Cornwall’s House of Refuge. As the monument describes, after the 1985 sale of the House of Refuge, which was located at 201 Eleventh St. East, the remains of 29

Cornwall Open to celebrate its 60th anniversary nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Open will be celebrating its 60th anniversary this year from July 30 to Aug. 1 at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. Club General Manager Sylvain Lacelle said that they have gone all out this year to make the event bigger than ever. “The greens haven’t been in this good condition in 40 years,” Lacelle said. “We are renowned for our greens. People come from all over to play on them and this year we wanted to go over the top.” The Open will cover every category of golfer, young and old and for the first time this year, there will be a Ladies Division. Entry into the open costs $60 per player, but Lacelle says that all spectators are welcome free of charge. Lacelle wants the public to be able to come and celebrate the anniversary of this tournament and enjoy the golf. On Sunday night there will be live entertainment on the patio provided by the Scotty J Trio. On Monday, on the last day of the Open, spectators will be able to see the Pro competitors take to the course. There will be 40 competitors competing

for $11, 000. Some participants include Chris Barber, Graham Gunn, Bob Flaro and Scott Johnson. Moe Bellefeuille, Head Pro at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club said that the Pros better bring their “A” game. “The greens are fast,” he said. “We want to make it tough for the boys on Monday.” Before he passed away, long time club member Ken Robertson wrote a letter to Lacelle where he shared memories of the First Open. “Club Pro Robert Dean suggested holding a Pro-Am Tournament, but warned us that this could succeed only if it was better than the others in the area,” the letter reads. “This warning became a challenge and the idea was accepted with enthusiasm.” In his letter, Robertson wrote how the first open was played on a nine hole course, because that is what the Club had back then. The participants had to go around the course twice. Both the Cornwall Golf and Country Club and the Cornwall Open have grown a lot since then. If you cannot make the Cornwall Open this year, then keep in mind that 2016 is also the 120th anniversary of the Club itself. The Cornwall Golf and Country Club will be celebrating its 120th anniversary on Oct. 28.

The Glengarry Highland Games is this weekend in Maxville Scottish entertainment. This evening is a magical time when everyone wears their finest tartan outfits as they raise a toast to a successful Games. Friday has a great lineup of heavyweights, highland dancing and piping competitions. A highlight of the day is the Youth Fiddlers Showcase on Friday afternoon in the Arena. The British MG Car Club will be polishing their vintage vehicles on the east mound and the popular 78th Fraser Highlanders will present their 18th Century Musket drill to the delight of the gathered crowd. Once again weather permitting, a talented trio of skydivers will “fly” the flags of Scotland, USA and Canada from the heavens onto the Games’ infield to begin the evening’s show. This year the Games is happy to partner with “GO Skydive” from Gatineau, Quebec to bring this highlight to start the Tattoo. Saturday is another full day of Scottish traditional events highlighted by the Official Ceremonies at noon hour when Jody Mitic, a Canadian military hero will welcome everyone to the Games. Community support made the First annual Alice Ferguson Memorial Golf Tournament a success Nick Seebruch CORNWALL, Ontario - Shannon Ferguson said that the golf tournament which bears her mother’s name would not have been possible without the support of a community like Cornwall. “No other place other than Cornwall could help me pull this off,” she said. “People and businesses came together and were so supportive.” One local business, Dave’s Reliable Signs, 6836477

St. Raphael’s Galarama celebrates 40 years Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media

ST. RAPHAELS, Ontario - St. Raphael’s Parish Galarama celebrated its 40th Anniversary on Sunday July, 24 by honouring the previous Chairs. During a speech given by present Chair, Marie MacDonald, she spoke of the plan Parish Priest Fr. Gary Osler (1976 – 1984) had 40 years ago. She said, “[He] had a vision of a fun filled day where the parishioners could come together with their family and friends.” MacDonald thanked each of the previous chair and invited them to join together to have their picture taken with a newly planted tree honouring them.

“These are two of the parishioners who have attended all 40 of the St Raphael’s Galaramas, and are still active on the committees,” she said. Bernie MacCulloch explained how the event has changed over the years .It was, he said, originally a picnic event held on the Sunday of the Highland Games with a softball tournament. About 25 years ago the event was moved forward one week. “What started as a parish fun day over the years has turned into a perfect venue to showcase local talent,” he added. Marie MacDonald said in the early days of the Galarama, each parish family would enter a team into the softball tournament. Some of the

activities going on at the 40th Annual St. Raphael’s Galarama included a silent auction, 50/50, a book sale raffles and food vendors and an antique car display. There was also a Kids Corner which catered to the children with face painting, bouncy castle fish pond and petting zoo. For entertainment there were a variety musicians and dancers. One of the highlights of the day was the tug-of –war. Although, she said, the activities have changed one thing that has not changed is the support from the community. She said, “I enjoy being the chair. I see the end result of what I have done, the work done by the committees. And see the community coming together, as a group with a common interest.”

Morgan Utton, 13, enjoys the Kids Corner Face Painting booth as Lexi Allinott, 14, a volunteer paints her face during the 40th Annual St, Raphael’s Parish Galarama (Heather Armstrong/ Seaway News).

5th annual Ribfest a huge success Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bigger and better than ever, the Cornwall Seaway Lion’s Club Ribfest opened in Lamoureux Park on the afternoon of Thursday, July 21. The heat did not keep people away as people started showing up more than an hour before the opening ceremonies of Ribfest that were scheduled for 5 p.m. There were six ribbers this year and 36 vendors. The biggest change was the extension of Ribfest from three days to four. “This is the best Ribfest for miles around,” said Ribfest Chairperson John Lucio. “The overwhelming demand made us extend Ribfest to four days this year.” A new electronic feature incorporated into Ribfest this year were the voting stations. Located around Lamoureux Park were signs with QR

codes that could be scanned that allowed Ribfest goers to vote on their favourite ribber. At the event was Mary Patrick, an Olympic hopeful who hopes to represent Canada for marksmanship at the 2016 Rio Summer Games. The Lion’s Club has supported Patrick by providing her with equipment to improve her training for the Olympics. In return, Patrick was more than happy to support the Lion’s Club all weekend at the festival. Lucio said that events like Ribfest help the Lion’s Club raise the money they need to help the community. “Helping Mary Patrick was an opportunity to really help someone local who was really striving for something,” Lucio said. “Ribfest and the Lion’s Club are all about raising money to put money back into the community for people like Mary and causes like the hospital.” Lucio said that Ribfest would not be possible without the support of the community and his team of volunteers from the Lion’s Club.

opinion

Just bike and no bark at Hells Angel’s rally this week Claude McIntosh Slogging through a lazy, hazy, scorching summer, a time newspaper columnist Allan Fotheringham complained he had more newsprint than news. Having said that ... Good chance there were high-fives in the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club public relations department on Monday morning after about 500 of the biker badasses spent the weekend in the nation’s capital. The capital had been put on high alert. Citizens were cautioned to be on their guard. Dozens of police officers were assigned to shadow the bikers. But nary a single incident involving the bikers was reported. As Will Shakespeare would say, “Much ado about nothing.” The Angels, as it turned out, morphed into model weekend tourists. They visited Parliament Hill, posed with gawkers and dined at downtown eateries. In short, they wore their “Nice Guys” faces. There have been rowdier Elks conventions in the capital. ***************************** The claim that legalizing marijuana will keep pot out of the hands of minors and put an end to illegal dope dealing is a myth. Tobacco is a heavily regulated legal product. Despite all the efforts by law enforcement over the years the illegal cigarette business continues to generate millions of dollars in untaxed profits with little impunity. Illegal cigarettes, which cost about a quarter of the much taxed legal brands, are as easy to buy on the black market as is a loaf of bread at the supermarket. Minors have easy access to cigarettes either through friends of legal age or on the black market. Probably the only under-agers attempting to buy legal cigarettes are minors working as junior undercover agents for health units. Ditto for alcohol. Always has been. Always

will be. Won’t be any different with marijuana. ***************************** Bob “Scooter” Jamieson, an outfielder with the Cornwall New York Cafe Aces who, against all odds, captured the Ontario juvenile softball championship and the hearts of a community in 1958, passed away Friday in London, Ont. He was 75. The Aces also played in the city junior baseball league where Jamieson did some pitching for the club. He is the third member of the championship Aces to pass away. The multi-talented Jacques Richard was killed in a boating accident at age 18, less than a year after the club won the Ontario title. Cornwall’s highest athletic honour - the Jacques Richard Memorial Trophy - given each year at the Lion’s Club Sports Awards Dinner is named in his honour. Yvon Cyr died in a freak accident a few years ago. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario (now Western U.) in 1965 Jamieson launched a secondary school teaching career in his adopted home town. Aces’ teammate Jim McDonald called Jamieson a great teammate and that he was much respected throughout his life. “He was a gentleman’s gentleman,” said McDonald. “When Jacques (Richard) passed away we knew they took the best man (on the Aces). He lived the straight and narrow and always went to church. Now, we could say the same about Bob.” The 1958 teammates have remained a tightly knit group over the years. They have taken a collection among themselves with the money to be donated to the Western University palliative care centre where Jamieson spent his last days. SPORTS STUFF: A 1993 Brushton-Moira Central School graduate who now lives in Cornwall will be inducted into the

Brushton-Moira Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday. Paulette Poirier played five years of varsity softball. In her sophomore year she batted .714, nailed nine home runs and was selected for the all-state first team. She was a four-year varsity starter in basketball and was voted first team allNorthern in three of those seasons. She is a graduate of SUNY at Rome, N.Y. ... Deadline for Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame induction night, Aug. 13, fast approaching. Tickets - $50 each can be purchased at Gordon Jewellers on Second Street West. THIS AND THAT: One of the most balanced opinion pieces written on the Sammy Yatim fatal shooting on a Toronto street car on July 27, 2013 was penned by retired Ontario Provincial Police commissioner Chris Lewis and published on CP24.com. Lewis makes a case that Const. James Forcillo had options other than shooting to kill. It is a must read for all police officers. Lewis is CTV’s public safety analyst. SEEN AND HEARD: Thumbs Up to the Ontario heritage folks for a plaque honouring hockey legend and Cornwall native Newsy Lalonde. However, did we really need

40 minutes worth of boring speeches at the unveiling? ... Newsy’s legendary hockey career had a humble start. He started playing at age nine and for the first year his father, a shoemaker, couldn’t afford to buy him skates, so he wore boots. He first learned to shoot a puck on an outdoor rink in the Cumberland/Water streets next to Snetsinger’s ice-making plant. TRIVIA ANSWER: The two Cornwall mayors to win three consecutive mayoral elections were Aaron Horovitz and Gerald Parisien. TRIVIA This family-owned scrap yard was on Pitt Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR: The National Lunch (the world’s best toasted perch rolls), Joe Ruest proprietor, 56 Montreal Rd. ... Cornwall Ice Company, Ed Caine proprietor, 19 Amelia St. ... Bell Telephone repairmen who strapped spikes to their boots and climbed wooden telephone poles. ... Unemployment Insurance stamps. ... Loney Brothers Hardware Store, 14 Montreal Rd. ... The Uncle Bob Club on CKSF, Rex “Big Slim” Silmser’s Sunshine Ranch show, Bob Eadie’s personal opinion show and Carl Fisher calling senior hockey games.

of this magnitude, we recognize that the organization of a safe and happy celebration such as Ribfest requires the year-long commitment of many dedicated individuals. The Cornwall Seaway Lions Club should be commended for their sustained commitment to many community initiatives; St. John Ambulance is one of several local charities to

benefit from such assistance. Our sincere gratitude is extended to John Lucio, Ribfest Chairperson, Julia Lucio, Ribfest Media Chairperson, and all the members of the Cornwall Seaway Lions Club. Support such as theirs helps us continue to provide community services through our volunteer programs such as the Therapy Dog Program and the

Medical First Responder Program. The Cornwall Branch of St. John Ambulance is proud to have been of service at the 2016 Cornwall Seaway Lions Ribfest. Yours truly, Michèle Brunette, Past Chair, St. John Ambulance, Cornwall.

By 2020-2021 Ontario debt is predicted to hit $350 billion

Dear Editor, Our awesome Cornwall Seaway Lions Club did a fabulous job with Ribfest once again this year. Wow…what an amazing job we did! But we couldn’t have done it without our volunteers who are dedicated to helping us see this event through, and work tirelessly without pay. They do this just because they want to help, and take part in an amazing experience. They are so awesome. And I am so thankful for their contribution. Thank you as well to all the great support from the media people here in Cornwall. The success of our event is also yours to share as you are the guys who help create the buzz

around it! Thank you for the love Wild Country 96.5, 101.5 The FOX - Real Classic Rock, My Mix 96.1, CKON Radio, Cornwall Newswatch, Cornwall Seaway News, Standard-Freeholder and The Seeker. A huge round of applause is also going to every City of Cornwall employee who worked on behalf of our awesome Ribfest: Sylvie O’Rourke (Parking & Licensing agent), Lorne Taillon (Leisure Arts Coordinator), and Bob Scott, Wayne Potter, Gilles Leger (each a City Foreman) and Latreille Electrical (subcontractor). I am so thankful for their leadership roles, and of course, for their crews of workers. You can’t pull something together as well and

ADearRandom act of Kindness kindness if she reads this in your newspaper! Editor: I had not one, but two wonderful people who helped me recently. The first was a lady who paid for my entire grocery bill at the Food Basic store on Second street! I didn’t have enough funds in my bank account to pay for my bill. As I was handing over the items that I couldn’t pay for to the cashier, this lovely woman offered to pay for my groceries! I was overcome with emotion, and after thanking her profusely, I asked if I could hug her. She smiled and said of course. I asked for her name, but she refused to give it. I exclaimed that she was one of my new Angels. I was literally in tears as she walked away. I may not know who she is, but she will certainly remember her

Then earlier this month, I was at Giant Tiger paying for a set of curtains at the cash, when I discovered that once again the funds in my account were not enough to cover the cost of my purchase. I decided to pay for one panel and then return later to pay for the other curtain panel. Just as I was going to leave, the lady behind me spoke up and said that she would pay for the other curtain! Once again, I was speechless. I couldn’t believe that this was happening Again! These two ladies have renewed my faith in humanity, and in our community. I was born and raised in Cornwall, and have been witness to the many negative things that have occurred here through the

awesome as this without the right people in place (like them) who go the extra mile whenever needed. Thank you sooooo much! One last shout out to our title sponsor, Ontarioeast.net. These guys rocked the Beer Garden all week-end long! They kept the people safe, made sure there was a constant flow of beer being poured and worked really hard to make sure everybody was happy. You can’t get better people! And to all the other sponsors, big and small, we couldn’t do this without your support and that of the community. See you all in 2017! John Lucio, Ribfest Chairperson

years. Say what you will about our city, but don’t tell me that good people cannot be found living in it. It’s people like these two ladies who make me proud to say I’m from Cornwall! Thank you once again to those beautiful ladies for their kindness! I will never forget you! If the woman I spoke with on the phone could email me to let me know if she received this, I would greatly appreciate it! These two women need to know how grateful I am, and the city should be aware of their acts of kindness! Thank you so much for your attention and time. Sincerely, Ms Debra Gillet

Dear Editor: Under the Ontario Liberal’s our debt has grown to $307 billion in 2016 from $138.8 billion in 2003. the net debt-to-GDP ratio rose to 40% in 2016 from 27.5% since 2003. The debt clock continues to tick upwards. The Liberals are financing loans to buy Hydro One stock why is this happening if, Premier Wynne stated Ontario needs cash and harassed former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper for an extra $12 billions a year in transfer payments do you hear Wynne harassing Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the same. Premier Wynne stated the 60% sale of Hydro One was required to generate a cash flow along with other Ontario assets is the cash flow to finance loans? Ontario used to make $750 million a year from Hydro One one would assume Ontario will only make 300 million a year with the 60% sale of Hydro One this sale will only add to Ontario’s debt problems so I must ask why are the Liberal,s are so intent on destroying our province now and for future generations, Ontario does not have revenue problem the Liberal’s have a serious problem of mismanaging funds and policies Ontario has lost 300 thousand manufacturing jobs due to our taxes and hydro rates which continue’s to drive investment and companies out of Ontario. Cornwall Sea Lions National Bound CORNWALL, Ontario - It is always exciting to watch the world’s best athletes complete, especially during an Olympic year. This year will be no different and no doubt many members of the Cornwall Sea Lions swim team will have their eyes glued to the television watching the swimming events. Before the Olympics start, however, there are two other swimming competitions that the swim club will be concentrating on. Kennady Kilger has qualified for both Senior Nationals which is the highest swimming competition in Canada and Age Group Championships. Unlike other swimming competitions, Senior Nationals has no age groups and only has one standard for all swimmers to attain. By qualifying for this prestigious competition, Cornwall Sea Lion Kennady Kilger ends the club’s over 10 year drought at attending the senior national level. Kennady will also be competing at the Far

Westerns in California. This is a faster competition and Kennady welcomes the added competition that USA swimming even will bring. Kennady stated that she is very excited to be attending this event and while she has personal goals that she wants to achieve, she is keeping those close to heart. Kennady admits her favourite swim stroke is the Butterfly. The second swimmer that will be in national competition this summer is Gregor MacPherson. At 13 years of age, Gregor has qualified and will be attending Age Group Championships; the Kennady Kilger and Gregor MacPherson are representing Cornwall on the national highest age group competition in Canada. Changing of the guard for longtime Le Village neighbours CORNWALL, Ontario - A changing of the guard has taken place in Le Village. Pat Blanchette, a barber at 132 McConnell Ave. has called it a career and is turning over ownership of his property to John Karitsiotis, his neighbour and owner of the King George Restaurant. The plan is to demolish Blanchette’s building and turn the property into some much-needed parking space for the busy restaurant. Blanchette, who first began to cut hair in Cornwall when haircuts were 60 cents and the prime minister was John Diefenbaker, has no regrets. At 90 years of age he’s earned a welldeserved retirement. “Somebody happened to get the idea that I might sell…but the only person who was going to get that property was John. He deserves it,” said Blanchette, a veteran of both the Second World War and Korean War as a member of the Canadian army, who after life in the service found himself looking for another adventure. Little did he know it would last more than 50 years.

“The story behind that is it was a tossup whether I bought myself a Studebaker…or the property where the barber shop is now,” said Blanchette of the nearby car dealership that was in Le Village at the time. “They were both about the same price, but there was no barber shop there.” Karitsiotis and his family are thrilled with the chance to expand their business. “I had been trying to get it since I opened here,” said Karitsiotis, whose restaurant has been in operation at the corner of Montreal Road and McConnell Avenue since 1999. His daughter Helen said the relationship her family has fostered in Le Village has stood the test of time – not unlike Blanchette’s barber shop. “He has been a great neighbour to us, and we cared about each other’s business, and looked out for one another,” she said. “As exciting as it is that we finally get to add our parking lot, it’s also sad to know that such a great neighbour won’t be part of our daily routines any longer. “Acquiring this property is very exciting for

John Karitsiotis, owner of the King George Restaurant in Le Village. us, knowing that we can provide this convenience for our existing clientele, as well as hopefully making it that much easier for someone who hasn’t tried our establishment, to stop in and enjoy a meal. “Operating our restaurant in Le Village has been such a great experience for us. history here and you really get to know your neighbours and your clientele, and work together trying to better the area. I have literally watched many of my customers grow up, from newborn to starting their own families. They have been part of many of my own milestones.”

Seaway’s own Atlantis draws divers Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - At the Cornwall City Council meeting on July 11, City Councillors praised the work of Linda Wilson and Cornwall Tourism for their work in promoting the area. “I’m so impressed with how the whole industry is pushing its borders,”Councillor Elaine MacDonald said. “You are certainly following suit.” One area that Cornwall Tourism is promoting is diving in the St. Lawrence. “Cornwall Tourism does well to cater to divers,” said Councillor Claude McIntosh. Linda Wilson, the Executive Director of Cornwall

Tourism said that Cornwall and the seaway had a lot to offer under the waves. “It is very enticing,” said Wilson at the council meeting. “Tourists don’t have to pay diving fees here and we have our own underwater Atlantis for them to explore.” “They can dive right from shore too,” Wilson added, “Our diving sites are unique. In Kingston and Brockville you have to take a boat to get out on the water. All of our diving is done from shore so it is very affordable and accessible.” The “Underwater Atlantis” that Wilson referred to was of course the lost villages. Wilson says that the villages and the old lochs with their big gate wheels are still under the waves of the St. Lawrence

and are accessible for divers to enjoy. There are also ships, like the Eastcliffe, who’s final resting place is just south of Crysler Marina and is marked on the Cornwall Tourism diving sites map. Another wreck listed on the diving map is right across from Cornwall off of the West coast of Stanley Island. The wreck is of the Fred Mercur, a Canadian ship built in Buffalo which sank after a fire in the early 20th century. The diving map was created with the help of the late John Earle. To learn more about diving in the Cornwall area please visit the Cornwall Tourism website at www. cornwalltourism.com

A reminder to Cornwall residents that your garbage and recyclables should be at the curb for pick-up after 7 p.m. the night before or prior to 7 a.m. on your collection day. Nukka is a 5 year old Siberian husky. She is a volunteer Therapy Dog with St. John Ambulance. She visits her great friends at the Parisian Manor but she also loves going to the library where her smaller friends get to read to her. Her soft fur coat and nice blue eyes always makes people smile. Nukka also loves playing with her fur sisters in the yard and when fall and winter rolls around she loves to run and pull a scooter or a sled.

How to keep more money in your pocket … • Bring your own shopping bag(s) to the store. If you are a clever seamstress, make colourful sacks from scraps of fabric. Some grocery stores give you a 5 cent credit for each one of your own that you use. • Use vegetable scraps (broccoli stalks, celery greens, cauliflower centers, etc.) to make vegetable stock for soups. Freeze the stock until you are ready to use it. • Wash glass jars and plastic food containers and reuse to store leftovers, lunches and so forth instead of buying containers, bags and wrap.
