Cornwall welcomed over 700 cyclists for MS Bike Tour MARC BENOIT, SPECIAL TO TC MEDIA

CORNWALL, Ontario - Over 100 kilometers, around 700 cyclists and only two days. All in support of 100, 000 Canadians living with an incurable disease. Welcome to the 27th Annual MS Bike Tour. Ingleside’s Farran Park was buzzing with cyclists of all ages on Saturday, August 6, for the MS Bike Tour from Ottawa to Cornwall. Approximately 700 participants made the trip from the community of Metcalf in Ottawa’s south end, to Cornwall’s NAV centre, with many planning to ride back on Sunday. “This is a really good cause, and it’s very well organized,” said Jean Sebastien, who is on his second year riding for MS. “It’s been a good day, nice weather, and nice people,” said Ian Bazinet, “My sister has MS...and this is my 5th year.” The Farran Park campground was the site for a barbeque and pit stop for riders entering the last leg of the tour. Volunteers served up hot food, and cool refreshments to the hundreds of participants who had travelled approximately 70 of the 100 km in support of combatting the autoimmune disease. “I feel so blessed that my three sons and

two grandsons came down, ” said volunteer coordinator Sue Tarle, “It makes me very proud. They’re behind their mom 100 per cent.” Tarle has lived with MS for 35 years now, and has been volunteering with the MS Society and participating with the bike tour ever since her diagnosis. “Just look at all these people. I’m really blessed, blessed beyond to have such great people helping.” For Andrea Lainchbury, this is her first time making the trip from the Ottawa area to Cornwall, in support of MS. “The people are really nice. I’ve had two flat tires and a lot people stopped to help. It’s been really great,” said Lainchbury, who was cycling as part of the Wheely Awesome team. Lainchbury’s husband could be in the early stages of MS, so the couple decided it was important they get involved in this year’s tour. “We’re doing it to support him, and everyone who has it,” said Lainchbury. New splash pad completed in Riverdale Park Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The promised splashpad at Riverdale Park opened to cheers from a crowd of grateful kids on a sweltering hot day on Friday, Aug. 5. When the issue of the splashpad was raised at City Council in February, then CAO Norm Levac raised the possibility of it not being completed by the end of summer 2016, however, Grant Marion Construction was able to completed the project while there was still plenty of hot weather left in the year. “It was all thanks to a lot of co-operation with

the City,” said Mathieu Lefevbre of Grant Marion Construction, when asked how the project was completed so quickly. “The City was all on board from the get-go.” Construction on the splashpad began at the end of May and was completed two months later. “City Council was keen on getting it installed as soon as possible so that families could make use of it this year,” said Richard Bourdeau, Supervisor of Facilities/Operations. “We worked hard to accelerate the tendering process in order to get the splashpad operational sooner. The original completion date was mid-August so we are pleased to have been able to turn the

The Mayor said that splashpads like this one

are an important community investment. “This is an important investment that adds to the quality of life that our residents enjoy,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “It is sure to be well-used by residents and I’m excited that families will be able to make use of it this summer.” The splashpad has a variety of water features and on-site changing rooms. The splashpad at Riverdale Park will be in operation daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The average sale price in Cornwall is just under $200, 000 and the high-end of that spectrum is anything over $500, 000. That being said, there are still quite a few homes on the Cornwall market. To ensure that homeowners are getting the best prices they can for their homes, Ouellette recommends that homeowners have a proper comparable market analysis done on their homes to ensure they are priced appropriately. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the average home cost in Canada was $503, 301, which is an 11 percent increase from last year. The bulk of that rise can be attributed to hot housing markets in Toronto and Vancouver which are dragging up the average. For the first time ever, in April of this year the average home cost in the Greater Toronto Area was over the $1 million mark. This 11 percent national increase is the biggest annual rise the CREA has seen since 2006 and according to Royal LePage’s quarterly analysis on its website, housing prices could rise a total of 12.4 percent in 2016. Cameras to be installed at the Cenotaph and Silver Cross memorials pending external funding

CORNWALL, Ontario - Last month saw outrage from residents after the cenotaph on the corner of Bedford and Second streets was vandalized. This led to a motion at the July 11 meeting of City Council that cameras be installed at the cenotaph and at the Silver Cross memorial on Tollgate Road. A report from the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) estimates the total cost for both cameras to be $30, 000. The report looked into the possibility of integrating the proposed cameras into the Cornwall Police’s existing CCTV system. The Cornwall Police’s CCTV system is a closed circuit camera system that was installed in 2010 and is passively monitored from the Cornwall Police Communications Centre. The CCPS report recommended against integrating these new cameras into their CCTV system as infrastructure of the new cameras would have to be installed as well.

The installation of additional camera infrastructure would raise the cost of the camera at the Silver Cross site to $35, 000 alone. CCPS instead recommends solar-powered cameras that store their data in memory cards housed inside the cameras. The Cornwall Police would then retrieve the video data in the event of an incident. The City will be seeking a $15, 000 grant from the Community War Memorial Funding Program which is run by Veteran’s Affairs Canada. The Community War Memorial Funding Program covers 50 percent of eligible expenditures on the renovation or expansion of Canadian war memorials. “Council is applying first for the grant. If we do not receive the funding Council then may apply that the installation is not cost effective,” Mayor Leslie O’Shaugnessy said at the City Council meeting held on Aug. 8. In its report CCPS does not however that cases of vandalism like the one that occurred at the Cenotaph in July happen very seldom. “It is worth noting that a search of the Cornwall Police records data base reveals only one prior incident of criminal mischief at either the Cenotaph site or the Silver Cross Site in the past decade,” the CCPS report reads. Councillor Elaine MacDonald suggested an alternative route to overt security of these memorial sites. “Obviously we owe a tremendous debt to our veterans and we need to protect their

Paint Cornwall gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness month Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cheryl Tourangeau has had childhood cancer turn the life of her family upside down, but is confident that through raising awareness and fundraising, childhood cancer can be a thing of the past. “I hope in my lifetime that cancer will only exist in history books,” she said. Tourangeau’s son, Alex, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Leukemia in 2013. Three year’s later, Alex hopes to be done his treatment this coming November. Tourangeau will be making a presentation at City Council’s meeting on Monday, Aug. 8 on the importance of raising awareness to fight diseases like childhood cancer. “There are 1, 400 kids every year who are diagnosed with pediatric cancer in Canada, that’s

four a day,” she said. “The average survival rate is 80 percent. Alex’s chances are 85 percent survival, but there are some kids for whom the survival chance is zero percent. Four kids that were in Alex’s cancer summer camp last year are gone now. Pediatric cancers only receive 4 percent of cancer research funding,” she continued. “When a child dies of cancer, that is 71-years of contributions to society that are lost.” September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. On Sept. 1, Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy will be raising the gold kids cancer flag in front of City Hall. Tourangeau says that she is encouraging everyone to sport a little gold on their front porch to help raise awareness. “Something as simple as a gold ribbon can help draw attention to this issue,” she said. “I would like to encourage all city departments, businesses, and residents to “paint” Cornwall

gold in September to visually show these children and their families our support and to bring awareness to childhood cancer,” Tourangeau wrote in her presentation. This Thursday is Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen, with proceeds raised going to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Tourangeau says that supporting CHEO is a very important cause that is related to childhood cancer because children with cancer do not only use the cancer centre. She says that all parts of CHEO impact the treatment of childhood cancers because chemo and radiation treatments can often lead to secondary illnesses such as heart problems, learning disabilities and fungal infections. “Through awareness we can achieve understanding, do fundraising and eventually find a cure for all childhood cancers,”Tourangeau’s presentation concludes.

hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation

CORNWALL, Ontario - School’s out and the kids are savoring their holidays, but for many families in our community summer is one of the hardest times to keep food on the table. Ask any food bank what time of year is their busiest for donations and they’ll tell you it’s December. But hunger doesn’t happen just at Christmas. Many low-income families rely on school meal programs to help their get children the nutrients they need to thrive. During the summer months, kids don’t have access to these programs so parents on low-income often struggle to be able to provide meals for their children. Mathew, a father of three children, was recently laid off. Last week was the third time that he’s visited the Agapè Centre’s food bank. “I was always working and now I’m laid off. It’s hard. It’s nice to get the extra help,” Matthew said. The young father knows first-hand the particular strain of the added costs of the season. “Kids love the fruits in the summer. They’re always hungry and more fruit is expensive on its own,” he said. What does 1000 clients a month for the food bank look like? The Agapè Centre gave out over $15,000 worth of emergency food each month this June and July. “The summer months can be difficult for many families to keep food on their tables, so we’re faced with a higher need for services from families,” said Johanne Gauthier, the Agapè Centre’s Operations Manager and Interim Executive Director. “But it’s also the time of year that we see a substantial drop in donations.” Over the summer, the centre sees more chil-

dren eating in the community kitchen. “During the month of April, 26 children were served meals in the community kitchen, but in the first month that school was out (part of June and part of July), 44 children lunch in our kitchen – that’s an increase of 69%,” said Gauthier. There are many ways to support the local food bank and soup kitchen, which services more than 1,000 people in our community. You can give fresh food from your garden, drop off a grocery store gift card or cash donation, or become a monthly donor. The charity will issue tax receipts for any donation of $20 or more (cash or food or grocery gift cards with receipts). “What we really need right now is money for fresh produce. And if people have an aversion to giving cash, we are always happy to receive PC gift cards,” said Gauthier. “The PC gift cards allow us to buy items like milk and eggs, which we don’t receive through normal donations.” The Agapè Centre spent $4,500 this past month on fresh foods alone, including potatoes, carrots, onions, milk and eggs. “We don’t want to be feeding bellies with empty calories. Low wealth is often correlated to low health, and we do not want to contribute to the costs of our health care system in the long run,” she said. The local food bank and soup kitchen has been feeding people in need for over 40 years, and recent changes to the organization are making it easier to access services in a comfortable and dignified way. “The upgrades at the food bank are great – I always feel welcome here. Don’t be ashamed when you actually do need the help,” said Mathew.

Great memories from the 205th Williamstown Fair Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media

12 - Thursday, August 11, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Williamstown Fair is Canada’s Oldest Annual Fair. The fair which ran Aug. 4 to the 7 has seen many changes over the years, but the one constant is its agricultural base. Fair President, Pierre Roy said of the fair, “Its biggest attraction is that it caters to family and what family means to the rural community.” For over 200 years the Williamstown has kept its core events, which include competitions for livestock, a variety of horse shows, sheep shearing, exhibits of home and garden as well as many games and sports. The community has been gathering annually since 1808. Roy said, “The fair was originally held on the streets of Williamstown.” But in 1812 when the fair grounds were donated by Sir John Johnson, The Williamstown Fair was created. Although, the fair now includes a midway Roy said, “(The fair) embodies all things that make a rural community unique.” Roy explained how even the changes and additions of buildings try to keep a historic feel.

Library Board member resigns over closure decision Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The SD&G County Library Board voted to close three library branches at their board meeting on Friday, July 29. The Dalkeith, Morewood and St. Andrew’s West branches will all be closed by Labour Day. Local patrons of those branches feel that the vote took place before they could have their say and one Library Board member resigned in protest. “The fact that we were holding this meeting on a Friday before a long weekend gave the impression that we were trying to hide something,” said former Library Board member Barbara Lehtiniemi. Lehtiniemi went on to say that the Board also considered these closures before the public had a chance to address the matter. “At our April meeting we agreed not to discuss closures until the Fall,” she said. “We didn’t do what we promised the public we would.” Cal Martin, founder of the Save our SDG Library Branches went further and said that he felt betrayed by the Board and Board chairman Councillor Bill McGimpsey. “This Spring, the Board reduced the hours of three branches, and the people rose up in protest,” he said. “We filled the meeting room at the Williamstown library. The Board reversed its decision and promised us proper consultation before making any further decisions. So this latest maneuver is a complete betrayal.” Martin went on to concur with Lehtiniemi

that he felt the decision was pushed through to avoid public consultation. “McGimpsey called a last minute meeting on the Friday before a long weekend, and during the Glengarry Games to push through the closures” he said. “The resolution that was passed wasn’t even in the Board package. Plus, the library website posted the info on proposed closures 7 weeks late (from the June 9 meeting), so we couldn’t know what was happening. The appearance is that he purposely wanted to keep the public in the dark.” Jeannie Gagnon, a member of the Save our SDG Library Branches said that McGimpsey promised public town hall meetings to discuss the closures and failed to deliver these meetings. McGimpsey counters that the town hall meetings will still be happening, but that from the very beginning they were never intended to be about the closures. In an email forwarded to the Seaway News by McGimpsey, he writes that “I feel the town hall meetings are an opportunity for the users to bring out friends and others to introduce them to the Library. It is also important that the members of the public that support libraries but don’t use them come out to see what they are all about. Of the 500+ who supported the Dalkeith Library, we know that only 40 some people use them per month. If they truly support the system, they need to come out and find out more about us.” In the SD&G County Library Board’s June 9 meeting package, the Board explains their intent for the town hall meetings.

The Library Board has announced that three branches of the SD&G County Library will be closed before Labour Day (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). “The purpose of these meetings is to inform the public about our Library and our services, but also to create a dialogue about what they envision for their Library within their specific township,” the meeting package on town halls reads. A media release sent out on Friday stated that the decision to close the branches was about providing better library service. According to the media release, “the decision to make these changes is in response to Council’s directions to offer a more equitable distribution of hours of operation across local municipalities, and limit operations at underused and/or inappropriate locations.” The media release goes on to say that the decision will allow resources to be allocated to where they will be best utilized.

McGimpsey says that the closure of the three branches will save the Library system $150, 000 which could be spent elsewhere. Jeannie Gagnon says that a library is an important pillar in these small communities, moreover she says that they are being used. “St. Andrews West branch has had an increase in circulation of on average 33 percent per month since November,” she said. “The only month that didn’t do as well-is the month the Board reduced the hours, again without any public consultation. We have also had an increase of 26 new patrons.” As for Barbara Lehtiniemi, she says that SD&G’s libraries are important to her, but that she could no longer serve on the Board. “I felt bad for resigning, but I didn’t want to work with people who deal like this,” she said.

Some fine tuning in the way the Ontario government allows alcohol to be sold to the unwashed can be described as a quantum leap into the future. Hey, this is Ontario which, when it comes to the dispensing of spirits, still has a light tint of puritan blue. But, as Bob Dylan wails, “Times are a changin’” The province is catching up to the 21st Century. The latest tinkering with the province’s musty booze laws gives Ontario residents the “wonderful” opportunity to order online from an LCBO outlet and have the order delivered. The catch is that the order has to be for at least $50, which isn’t difficult considering the LCBO’s overtaxed, inflated sticker prices. Oh, one other thing. There is a $12 Canada Post delivery charge, if there isn’t a strike or lockout at the national delivery service. This delivery thing isn’t exactly groundbreaking. For years mom and pop delivery folks have been filling telephone orders placed by residents, cheaper and faster. The online ordering comes on the heels of the “monumental” decision (by Ontario standards) to allow 12-packs to be sold in LCBO outlets. Well, some of them. Just 10 in big market regions to start. One news agency called them the “10 blessed temples.” Got to tread carefully. Wouldn’t want to tick off the foreign controlled Beer Store folks who have enjoyed a monopoly when it comes to selling suds in Ontario. The big lie over the years has been that tight controls and high prices are needed to keep Ontario residents from drinking themselves into the gutter which might be why a big cheese at the LCBO ivory tower in downtown Toronto said that the online/delivery service is not aimed at selling more booze and boosting the bottom

line. No. He said it is to help customers to secure rarer items that might sell out quickly. We still have a long way to go to catch up with Quebec’s laissez-faire attitude on the sale of alcohol, but we are light years removed from draconian liquor laws that commanded LCBO outlets hide the booze in a backroom and customers had to fill out order forms and lineup to place their order. Then, by law, they had 12 hours to get the booze home. Who knows where all of this is going. By 2050 folks might be picking up a six-pack at the corner store. TRIVIA This retired sportscaster/author who was part of the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast team for many years played for the famous junior Inkerman Rockets after graduating from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. where he was an all-American on the varsity hockey team. TRIVIA ANSWER Cornwall Commercial College was founded in 1862 in the Snetsinger Block on lower Pitt Street by George F. Smith who remained the founder/principal until the school closed in 1962. In its pre-Second World War heyday, the school had a reputation as one of the best commercial colleges in the country. It attracted students from across Canada, the United States and Great Britain. THIS AND THAT You would think that the world’s most powerful democracy filled with so many brilliant minds could do better than HRC and The Donald. Ralph Nader said it best “Time for a ‘none of the above’ on the ballot. Nader believes this would bring out more people on voting day. He might be onto something. ... Can’t wait for this one. Retired boxing legend Roberto Duran is so angry with The Donald’s plan to kick out 11 million illegal Central American immigrants, he has challenged the belligerent billionaire to a fight in the ring. ... Strange that for many years South Africa was black listed, and rightly so, by the United Nations for blatant human rights abuses, but many of the same UN member countries now ignore human rights abuser China. According to available and updated statistics, an elephant is brutally slaughtered for its tusks in Africa every 15 minutes. Without concerted international action, the very future of African elephants is facing serious threats. According to some wildlife experts, there is threat these magnificent animals could become extinct by 2025. momentum is growing for a permanent global ban on the sale of ivory. A global summit is just around the corner where we could win the total ban we desperately need. Already there is a petition on line to ban ivory so elephants can be saved for future generations. Efforts are also being made to convince all countries around the world to get on board. All over the world, iconic species are being driven to the edge of extinction. Europe has been a world leader in efforts to tackle the illegal wildlife trade. Some progressive African countries like Kenya in East Africa have taken drastic steps to fight poachers and put an end to ivory trade. Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta set fire to the world’s biggest ivory bonfire not long ago and

demanded a total ban on the trade in tusks to end illegal ivory trade. “The height of the pile of ivory before us marks the strength of our resolve,” Kenyatta declared before setting fire to the ivory. “No one, and I repeat no one, has any business in trading in ivory, for this trade means death of our elephants and death of our natural heritage.” Conservationists are warning the world these majestic elephants cannot survive Asia’s high dollar demand for ivory tusks. There has been a huge increase in poaching activities and it is often reported that some wildlife agents, customs officials and government leaders are being paid off by what is being viewed as a well organized crime group. This group, it is claimed, is moving ivory from

Africa to Asia in huge quantities. The elephant population in Africa in the 1950s numbered five million. By 1989, this number dropped to 450,000 in the continent. The number has dwindled because of poaching. Poaching is on the increase because of the demand for ivory in China. The price of raw elephant tusks in China has more than tripled in the past year. All drastic steps must be taken to stop the killing of elephants. International organizations and world powers must get involved in ending this frenzy as ivory fuels wars and profits. The future of the African elephants ultimately rests with one country and this country is China. China is by far the world’s largest market for ivory products.

so why cut the service? Library Board policies were broken throughout this process by the Chair. During this furtive process, council was lied to, the people were lied to, and policies were broken. If this is how they run committees, then something needs to be done. Ironically, it was through closing a service that increases knowledge that this bad governing was brought to light. To the county council: Please step in and save our library. Without a proper process to follow, this whole service can be decimated on a

whim. Their mission statement clearly includes providing equitable access. Equitable means everyone, seniors, children, rich, poor, drivers and walkers - don’t take away another service from this community. A library isn’t just about books - it is a place you can go to for almost anything, after all it is a library. Save our libraries! Ignorance is the downfall of communities and democracy. Sincerely, Jeannie Gagnon former Vice-chair of SDG Library Board

LETTERS

Save our SD&G Libraries told a hall full of people that we would have the chance to voice our concerns with the Board this story was then changed to suit the Chair’s agenda. County Council was told that they too would be afforded the chance to rebut if the Board decided to close any branch. This never happened. We were told to get our library’s stats up and we did. St. Andrews is one of the cheapest branches to operate and consistently the 7th best performing branch in the system (for number of users per month). The budget wasn’t cut,

Dear Editor: Three libraries are closing in SD&G: St.Andrews, Morewood and Dalkeith. I feel that I need to tell you this since the Library Board voted to close the 3 branches on July 29, 2016 but have failed to place notice in any branch affected. They are not giving any notice to the very people who use this service, nor did they afford the same courtesy and respect to county councils before they railroaded the process to close the branches. CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall City Council heard a proposal at the Aug. 8 Council meeting to have pop-up patios installed at some restaurants in the Downtown and Le Village BIAs. Pop-up patios are temporary patio structures that can be installed relatively quickly outside restaurants. The goal will be to have the pop-up patios agreed to and installed in time for next summer. The City approved a motion to have City administrators produce a report on the logistics required for such an undertaking. In the downtown area, the pilot project could see temporary patios installed along Pitt Street between Second and Third streets. Chairperson of the Downtown BIA, Brenda Campbell, says her organization supports the move. “We’re pleased that city administrators are looking into this important subject and we look forward to reading a report on the matter when it is presented to city council in the future,” said Campbell. “As evidenced by the work done in other cities, pop-up patios can be an important driver of foot traffic and commerce in downtown areas. Heart of the City Manager Denis Carr said that his organization also supports the idea. “It’s clear that pop-up patios have become an integral part of the downtown framework in other communities,” he said. “Everything we are hearing suggests this would be a positive addition to our downtown community and would benefit businesses, as well as customers looking to enjoy a meal or beverage under sunny skies.” Individual business owners will be responsible for applying to take part in the pilot program if it is approved by the City.

Fines Home Hardware & Building Centre is a family owned business living in your community. With the help of SD&G we have been able to purchase a hardware store in January and turn it into a full lumber yard in august. We are not new to the business as we ran a lumber yard in Shelburne, for 22 years and servicing the contractor and home owner is what we are good at! Thanks for all the support during our renovations.

MORRISBURG, Ontario - The Upper Canada Playhouse summer season continues to sizzle, with its upcoming production of Neil Simon’s Last of the Red Hot Lovers. “A truly great comedy withstands the test of time and continues to entertain audiences long after it’s written,” said artistic director, Donnie Bowes, of the now-classic, penned by America’s greatest contemporary playwright, which opened on Broadway in 1969. “Like all good comedies, Last of the Red Hot Lovers is about real people,” said Bowes. “Audiences identify with the characters because they reflect the life experiences we all face at one time or another. And like all great comedy, there’s wit and wisdom behind the laughs, as some keen observations are made about the human condition, with its trials and tribulations.” The plot centres around Barney Cashman, a

47-year-old owner of a fish restaurant, who married his childhood sweetheart, and has lived a very ordered and predictable life up to this point. Inspired by the sexual revolution of the 60s, and the need to spice up his life, Barney is looking for adventure outside his marriage. He chooses the security of his mother’s New York apartment for an illicit affair, but of course, nothing goes to plan. “Last of the Red Hot Lovers is in the hands of four talented and experienced actors who are well-equipped to bring this comedy to life and mine it for all its comedy and wisdom.” A Playhouse favourite, for many years, Brian Young (The Genleman Clothier, Bedfull of Forreigners) plays Barney along-side his reallife wife Alison Lawrence (Wife Begins at Forty). Playing Bobbi is Maria Dinn (Hilda’s Yard) and as Elaine, Viviana Zarrillo (Whose Wives Are They Anyway, and I Do! I Do!). This production of Last of the Red Hot Lovers is in collaboration with Orillia Opera House, with Orillia’s artistic director, Jesse

He hosted free hot dog days for the charity last year which raised over $800, and he dropped off a generous truck load of food at Corus Feeds Kids stuff the bus event this past June. “We’re really grateful for the support Mike has given over the years,” said Kendra Smith, the nonprofit’s fund development and communications officer. “Third party fundraisers like this are a huge help to keeping our shelves stocked with good food – especially during summer months.” Allaire partnered with other local businesses to help with the event. “The food cupboard is in much need. I thought

this was great idea,” said Bob Stevenson, Store Manager of Wholesale Club. Wholesale Club is supplying drinks, ice cream and volunteers to help serve up the grub – and even helped with the planning. “Agapè is an integral part of Cornwall and Séguin Patate is an integral part of Cornwall. The Wholesale Club is affiliated with both parties and we just wanted to do our part in celebrating the 60th anniversary and letting Agapè benefit from Mike’s goodness,”said Yvon Larocque, Assistant Store Manager of Wholesale Club. “We’ve all been affiliated with Agapè at some point and to some degree. It’s just a win-win.” Allaire thanks Cardinal Meats for supplying the hot dogs and Betty Bread for donating the buns. Séguin Patate is located at 921 Marlborough St N.

Bring the mixture to a boil and add the shrimp; cook and stir until the shrimp turn pink, 3 to 4 minutes. Toss steamed broccoli and water chestnuts with the shrimp mixture to coat with the sauce. CORNWALL, Ontario - The local chip stand icon is celebrating 60 years of fries with some special deals on Sunday August 21 from 11am to 6pm. Owner Mike Allaire will give away 60 t-shirts to lucky customers at the top of every hour. And there will be a hint of nostalgia: Séguin Patate will bring back the 25¢ fry cone for the day. Allaire remembers the old days of summer with Séguin Patate chip trucks ringing their bells up and down the streets of Cornwall. He hopes the fry cone will bring people back to the delight of sucking up every last drop of vinegar out the bottom of the cone…once the fries were devoured of course. All proceeds from the following celebration specials will be donated to the Agapè Centre: • Mini donuts, $2/dozen • $2 Hot dog and drink combo • 25¢ fry cone • 60¢ ice cream cup

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Seaway Valley Northern Lights girl’s hockey team had a great showing at the 6th Annual Women’s Beantown Classic that was held in Boston, Massachusetts. During a hot and dry July weekend where the temperature in Boston hovered around 112 degrees Fahrenheit, 17 girls found themselves in the rink and on the ice battling some of the best female hockey players from Canada and the United States. The Northern Lights would open the tournament with a 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Blades. In game two, the Lights evened their record with a 4-1 win over the U16 Philadelphia Lady Flyers. The team would split the next two games falling 4-1 to Game Plan 2001, a Toronto based team, followed by a 5-2 win over the Vermont Shamrocks. After the round robin portion of the tournament, the Lights would find themselves with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses, enough to finish in the top 16 of the 30 team division and moving on to the playoff round. The team’s hopes of a championship came to an end in the first game of the playoff round as they would fall to the first place Anaheim Lady Ducks by a score of 5-1. At the end of the weekend, the Seaway Valley Northern Lights would finish the tournament in 15th place in their 30 team

Biodegradable tees made of bamboo are also available in specialized stores. It’s hard to believe that one of the smallest and most useful accessories continues to help golfers improve their game! 6836478

Designed to elevate the ball on the tee-off, the tee has evolved considerably over the years. This simple little wooden peg has made a lot of progress and still remains an important accessory for golfers. The time is long gone when players used a pile of sand to elevate the ball! The arrival of the wooden tee not only allowed golfers to improve their drives but also to avoid damaging the grass on the tee-offs. Tees have become much more sophisticated over the years. These days they are made mainly from variously coloured wood or plastic. Some golfers prefer the traditional wooden tees for their effectiveness, while others will opt for those made in plastic because of their greater durability. Large manufacturers of golf equipment are constantly searching for improvements and a wide variety of tees are now available on the market. One option is the wooden tee in two colours and varying lengths, while the range of plastic tees is more elaborate. Apart from conventional tees it is also

Spray foam insulation combats mould (NC)—If you worry about mould in your home and are trying to find solutions, you can take one simple step to help prevent it from happening. Mould is commonly found in houses that have poor wall insulation. As moisture builds up, the interior of the walls can slowly rot. This gives off a foul smell and reduces the overall stability and quality of a property. You may need to completely strip your walls to effectively repair them. Such a repair can be expensive, but in order to prevent this situation from occurring, you can choose an alternate kind of insulation for your home. Spray foam insulation, (like Icynene) is a good choice, especially for preventing mould. Unlike other insulation, spray foam protects your walls against moisture by forming an air barrier.

Be careful with BBQ brush bristles. You don’t want to get it in your food and end up swallowing it. Clean your grill before and after you cook. Wash your grill with soap and water and use olive oil before putting food on the grill. This will clear it from any bristles and keep your food from sticking.

LINING UP FOR HEAVEN

6890161

34 - Thursday, August 11, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

In this day and age of environmental concerns, it’s still unbelievable that people give little thought to littering.

When everybody on earth passed on and waiting to enter Heaven, God appeared and said, “I want the men to make two lines: One line for the men who were true heads of their household, and the other line for the men who were dominated by their women. I want all the women to report to St. Peter.” Soon, the women were gone, and there were two lines of men. The line of the men who were dominated by their wives was 100 miles long, and in the line of men who truly were heads of their household, there was only one man. God said to the long line, “You men should be ashamed of yourselves; I created you to be the head of your household! You have been disobedient and have not fulfilled your purpose! Of all of you, only one obeyed. Learn from him.” God turned to the one man, “How did you manage to be the only one in this line?” The man replied, “My wife told me to stand here.”

This is Tyson. He’s a three year old German Shepherd. The first picture is the day we adopted him. He was a rescue. He was picked up on the streets of Montreal & taken to a shelter. From there he was taken to a Rescue in Ottawa. We adopted him when he was a small 5 month old puppy. He’s 110lbs now & is amazing. We visit the Hartford Nursing home in Morrisburg once a week. They love this big teddy bear. When we’re home he enjoys swimming & playing with his brother & sister, also German Shepherds. People think rescues are hopeless...I’m very proud of this boy. He brings many smiles to the elderly. Pet Tip of the Week: People sometimes think that in a cottage setting, pets can be allowed to run at large. The truth is that many of these pets become lost, are hit by cars or get into fights. Pets need to be safely confined to the cottage property and be equipped with identification that carries the address and phone number of your cottage.
