Sk8fest Celebrates 13 Years of Grit and Glory ALEXANDRIA, Ontario - The gloomy weather didn’t stop skaters from coming out to shred at the 13th annual Sk8fest this Saturday, Aug. 13. The event, which raises funds for the skate park in Alexandria, has matured a great deal over the years. Not only did skaters have access to over 40 ramps, participants and public also got to enjoy a wide variety of musical performances throughout the day. Held at the Glengarry Sports Palace, the venue worked perfectly to serve both purposes. Event organizer, Alain Lauzon said that despite its continued popularity, however, this was the make-or-break year for Sk8fest. Opting to take a gamble, Lauzon decided to lower the cost of admission this year; a move he says ultimately paid off. “The turnout has been excellent,” said Lauzon. “Probably the best one yet, thanks, in part to the rain.” Lauzon, who also owns and manages
70
Alexandria’s AdLiBb Music, said that community involvement in the event has reached a critical point if Sk8fest is to expand. “When someone takes time to organize an event, the township should recognize its potential and get behind it,” said Lauzon. “That’s really the most important part of any event’s growth.” This year, his main focus was on delivering a jam-packed day of live performances, with musical diversity being a top priority. In its 13th year running, the event featured 9 musical acts, from punk/grunge to hip-hop. Unlike some local shows, Sk8fest kept the tunes coming throughout the day, giving folks a great bang for their buck and living up to its claim of being ‘cheaper than most poutine.’ This year, organizers were able to purchase a trailer which houses all of the event’s ramps. “I used to keep them in my backyard,” said Sk8fest veteran, Justin Sauve. “The first year, we only had about 5 or 6 ramps. Now, we’ve got the mobile skate park, and there’s between 40 and 45 ramps.” Spectators enjoyed a handful of
competitions, with Long Grass Gap Ollie, Game Of SKATE, and Biggest Quarter Pipe To Quarterpipe Transfer, to name a few. Event organizer, Alain Lauzon says that he enjoys giving young people the chance to showcase their talent on the big stage. “There might not be 100 or 200 people in front of stage but they are treated as such,” said Lauzon. “To see young bands come up on stage, turn it up loud and play...that’s the best.”

Lauzon praises his volunteers for helping Sk8fest go off without a hitch, crediting much of the event’s success to their overwhelming support. All funds raised will be put toward Phase 2 of the Alexandria Skatepark Project, which helps to continuously improve the park and the wellbeing of local youth.
Tasting Tomatoes CORNWALL, Ontario - Transition Cornwall+ Food Action Group and the Cornwall Public Library invite the community to Tasting Summer Tomatoes, a pop-up tomato tasting event on Wednesday, August 24 from 11:00a.m – 1p.m. This free event will allow passers-by to taste a wide selection of locally grown tomatoes, learn simple ways of preserving the summer harvest, and provide an opportunity to ask gardening questions to local experts. Local gardeners and tomato growers are also invited to participate in the fun by bringing three-to-six tomatoes from their gardens to share with the public. The more the merrier, although organic and heirloom varieties are preferred. For those looking for a break from the heat, a free screening of Heirloom Tomatoes for Home Gardeners will be shown inside the library at 12 p.m. The film showing features a presentation by David Kroska, M.D., the owner of ACME Heirloom Tomato in Minnesota, USA. The event will be setup outside on the library’s front terrace located on Second Street, west of Sydney. In case of rain, tasting will take place in the library entrance hallway. Tasting Summer Tomatoes has been planned as part of the Local Food Challenge, a public awareness campaign that challenges residents to (re)discover the local food sources in the community, choose more local food, and share local food experiences with others. The LFC runs from August 12 to 28, 2016 and is open to residents of the counties of Stormont, Dundas, & Glengarry (SDG), Prescott-Russell (PR), and the City of Cornwall & Area. Cornwall’s Port Theatre is hoping their upcoming comedy show will become a regular feature. The Port has a stacked card to help make their first show on Aug. 19 a hit. The show will be headlined by Mike MacDonald of Ottawa Yuk Yuk’s fame, and will also feature other comedians from Ottawa and from Montreal’s Just for Laughs. The show at the Port Theatre is special for not only being the first comedy show being held there in recent memory, but also for being the first time that comedians from Ottawa Yuk Yuk’s and Montreal’s Just for Laughs share the same stage.
Bonville was brimming with excitement this Sunday, Aug. 14 as members of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul gathered at the Cornwall Township Lions Club, and were presented with a cheque for $ 3, 500. A breakfast was organized to celebrate the generous donation, with people piling in to eat around 8 a.m. The proceeds were from the Cornwall Township Lions Club 5th Annual Car Show, sponsored in part by Wired Audio.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Waterfest came roaring into town on Saturday, as spectators and participants crowded the banks of the old canal in Riverdale to enjoy a day of high speed dragon boat racing. The seventh annual Kinsmen Cornwall Waterfest offered entertainment for the entire family; from live performances and mouth-watering food — to the Waterfest Marketplace, which included over 20 vendors. But, the main attraction for event goers was the action on the water. “It’s a lot of fun to get in a boat and paddle away…there is a little bit of something for everyone. We try to get the whole community out here for our free event,” said Waterfest organizer Kate Dwyer. Alongside enthusiastic local participants, Waterfest attracts teams of dragon boat racers from across the region, including the Ottawa Police, and new this year, the Tiger Lilies from Montreal. “As far as local teams go, Emard’s is probably almost a professional team…Emard Lumber and ‘Dragon Rrrr Butts’ are hardcore, every year,” said Dwyer. “I think this is our sixth year” said Chris Emard, owner of Emard Lumber and de facto team lead for his company’s entry. “We’re a mixture of employees, friends and family…We joined this five or six years ago with the intention of it being fun and it’s still fun, but I think every time you get a team together at the end of the competition you’re thinking, ‘Hmm, could we have done a little bit better?’” Not even the much-needed rain that was forecast for today kept fans away. “We’ve had fantastic weather for the past four or five years, so it was time for us to get a little bit of rain…I’d rather have the rain than the extreme heat all day,” said Dwyer. “I think a lot of people are just happy it finally rained.” Waterfest is held along the old canal, across from the minor league soccer fields. To help people get to the event, Cornwall Transit rerouted service for the day to include the site of festivities on the transit route. Boats and training services are provided by 22 Dragons, an Montreal based company. Anyone interested in registering for next year’s event is encouraged to visit Cornwall Waterfest’s website to sign up.

“We want people to know that their support really makes an impact,” Beyond 21’s People Connector Dana Bingley said. “That hot dog they’re buying makes a difference.” Bingley went on to say that all of these different groups coming together in support of a common cause is at the heart of what Beyond 21 is all about. “Community is really the heart of Beyond 21,” she said. “Bringing community together really fits with out mandate.” Tish Humphries, the President of Beyond 21’s Board of Directors said that the work that her organization does relieves a lot of pres-

blue cheese, date, and almond salad to serve with it. INGREDIENTS 1 (1-1/4- to 1-1/2-inch-thick) New York strip or beef rib-eye steak Vegetable oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS Remove the steak from the refrigerator and let it come to room temperature, about 30 to 45 minutes. Heat a gas or charcoal grill to high (about 450°F to 550°F) and rub the grates with a towel dipped in vegetable oil. Meanwhile, season the steak on all sides with salt and pepper. When the grill is ready, place the steak on the grates and cover the grill. Cook, undisturbed, until grill marks appear on the bottom and the steak’s lightly charred on the edges, about 4 to 5 minutes. Flip, cover the grill, and cook until the steak’s medium rare, about 4 minutes more. To check for doneness, use your finger to press on the meat: It should be firm around the edges but still give in the center. You can also use an instant-read thermometer; it should register between 125°F and 130°F. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let it rest for at least 5 minutes before serving.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Olivia Therriault had the opportunity to compete on the French kids television program Les Jumelles, which means twins in English, when it was in town filmin on Monday, Aug. 15. Olivia, 8, is a student at Marie-Tanguay Elementary Catholic School. She said she found out about the show from her teacher, who is the uncle of the show’s hosts, the titular Jumelles, twins, Catherine and Julie Seguin and he encouraged his class to take part in the show. To get on the show, Olivia had to make an audition tape explaining why she wanted to be on and send it in. Les Jumelles is a show where family members team up to travel around their town to find clues and solve a puzzles.
Olivia decided to team up with her grandmother Denise for the show, so the two of them traveled to locales around town like the Kids Corner, Floral Expressions, the War Memorial and the painted mural in front of the courthouse on Second Street. At Floral Expressions, Olivia and her grandmother had to solve a flower arranging challenge where they had to match the layouts and patterns of the Floral Expresssions crew. “I had tremendous fun,” Denise said. “It was really nice. It was very energizing and Olivia was very good at finding clues.” At the end of the competition Olivia got to meet the twins, Catherine and Julie. “It was fun meeting them, they were really nice,” she said. The show is produced by Balestra Productions and is broadcast by the French language network TFO.

Working our way through the summer news drought Claude McIntosh The Ontario Association of Municipalities (AMO) conference was held this week (finished Wednesday) in Windsor and one of the hot button topics was arbitration awards given to police and firefighters. It is an old complaint - at least 30 years old that gets dusted off at AMO conferences and during municipal budget discussions. And, like other years, the province will pretend to be sympathetic. Remember, it was the McGuinty Liberals who tossed fuel on the issue when it declared that the OPP would be the highest paid force in the province and brought in unnecessary retention bonuses for the provincial force. Arbitrators didn’t have much choice but to extend the same bonuses to municipal forces and keep the salary playing field relatively level. Unfortunately, and as flawed as the arbitration system might be, the alternative is to remove the essential service label and give firefighters and police officers the right to strike. Nobody wants that: neither the firefighters, police officers nor the public. It would be a nightmare. It would, in some ways, give police and fire unions a bigger bargaining chip. Many municipal politicians have called on the province to rein in the arbitrators with marching orders to be kinder to the municipalities. No judge would side with that one in a legal dispute. Arbitrators are independent creatures free of political interference. Giving them a to-do list would make them less than independent. And, by comparison, despite binding arbitration that many believe is tilted in favour of the protective services, police and firefighters remain in the same salary range as teachers and
nurses with similar qualifications. Where firefighters and police officers gain traction on the salary scale is overtime. But it’s not all bad. Cornwall dodged arbitration with its police association which recently agreed to a five-year contract with an average annual pay increase of 1.85%, which will keep them in the bottom third in Ontario. In the early 1990s they were the highest paid. Hard to make the case that arbitration awards over the last 25 years has made the local cops big winners. THE WELL WORN JERSEY One of the rug rats (aka grand kids) wanted me to give him my autographed Wayne Gretzky jersey that I won in a Mr. Big chocolate bar contest 26 years ago. Told him no, that I would leave it to him in my will, to wit he said, pointing to a slight stain on the front, “Will you clean it first? MINOR HOCKEY STARTING SOON Registration for minor hockey programs will begin before the end of the month soon followed by the start of the season. When many Baby Boomers were playing minor hockey (house league registration fee $10) the season started when the outdoor rinks were ready. RETIRED AND ENJOYING IT Cornwall Police Service staff sergeant Pierre Pilon noted that the Ontario Provincial Police detachment was on Augustus Street, not Adolphus Street as we said in last week’s column. We blame it on a brain cramp. After the Seaway construction, the OPP station moved to the new town of Long Sault. TRIVIA & ANSWER Retired Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster/author Brian McFarlane played for the old Inkerman Rockets after an outstanding career with St. Lawrence University
in Canton, N.Y. He scored 101 goals over four varsity seasons. He was the colour commentator for Leaf games until 1980 when team owner Harold Ballard banned him from the Gardens press box for on-air comments that supported captain Darryl Sittler and criticized the team owner. HNC moved him to Montreal and Winnipeg games. He retired in 1991. Next week our annual trivia extravaganza. GEORGE MOSS MEMORIES City resident George Moss tickles our memory with some of the sights and sounds of summer in Cornwall many, many years ago. They include swimming in the Cornwall Canal at Mack’s Bridge (aka Silver Bridge) and the lifeguards Bob Doyon (who became a high school teacher) and Sid Montpetit, whose brother was a lifeguard at St. Lawrence Park. The chained-off area for kids just learning to swim. Lover’s Lane, the echo, the bywash and boardy bottom. The Chinese laundry at Brennan’s Corners, just west of Marlborough. Salhany’s store across the street. Larue’s Meat Market on the other corner. Collin’s Store and the pharmacy that later became Rex
Dupuis’s confectionary. Loney’s hardware store. The Loney family lived next door. He recalled the junk dealer at Gloucester Street and Aberdeen Avenue. An enterprising kid next door spent the summer selling the same old tire to the elderly junk dealer for five cent. Each time he wheeled the worn-out tire over to the dealer and collected his money he would volunteer to toss it up on a huge pile against the fence. He would throw it high and far enough so it landed back in his yard. Is it my imagination or are there more abandoned grocery carts around town than in other years. Sometimes there are two or three in the same spot, and left for days. Last winter an abandoned grocery cart sat in a Second Street West snowbank - eventually being covered - for almost the entire winter. Years ago I had one left on my front yard. Called the grocery store but they never pick it up. That was 10 years ago. The store has since closed. ONE FINAL THING Tuesday marked the 39th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s passing at age 42. Where has the time gone?
American politics very different from Canada Why am I and many others suddenly so interested then? The answer is simple. The November 2016 election is very different from all others. The election campaign has become so interested because of one particular candidate, insults being tossed around daily, huge amounts of money being spent, lies being circulated and the entertainment it provides. I never looked at an election this way bore.
This year the interest is so high because of Donald Trump, the billionaire and the erratic Republican presidential candidate. No one in mighty America, including all the veteran political pundits, expected this. These experts just like ordinary Americans are surprised and baffled by the turn this election has taken. And it is hard to predict what the final result will be. In comparison, the Canadian federal election was tame and far more civilized. Admittedly
would not get anywhere. Look at what has happened so far. There are still about three months to go before the Americans head to the polls. And there are still three big debates to go. Around the world, in stable and poor unstable countries, people are craving for a change. Look at what happened in the Philippines. Until the very end of the campaign, no pundits in Canada expected the young, charming and affable Justin Trudeau to win a majority government.
many Americans don’t like Democrat Hilary Clinton, the former First Lady and wife of President Bill Clinton, who may make history by becoming the first woman ever elected to the top post in America. A series of opinion polls in past two weeks suggest that Trump is falling way behind Hillary Clinton. Yet, other polls say this will be a closely fought election. Why should anyone believe when every single poll so far has been incorrect or way out of line? Pundits told us Trump

Objection to the behaviour of the Library Board Editor: As you may be aware, we have been advised by the SD&G Library Board that the Morewood, St. Andrews West, and Dalkeith library branches will be closed as of September 3rd, 2016. Congratulations to the SD&G Library Board! Once again you have betrayed the library community of SD&G and behaved very unprofessionally. Can you not follow established practices, policies or public consultation prior to making major decisions of this nature? The current mission statement of the SD&G Library is as follows: “Our Mission is to be actively engaged and make a significant contribution to the social and economic success of the community by providing free, convenient and equitable access to information for all residents as well as programs and services that support creativity, imagination, innovation and entrepreneurism.” Nowhere in this statement do we find the closing of
libraries as part of the SD&G Library mission. Why then is the Board Chair stating publically that the branches indicated will definitely be gone as September 3rd, 2016. In fact, it is suspected that library administration has already begun removing resources from St. Andrews West. Has SD&G County Council recently requested that the Library Board close branches? Not to my knowledge they haven’t. The current SD&G Warden, and South Glengarry Deputy Mayor as Board members, both voted to retain the branches. The Mayor of South Stormont will also be providing support for local branches at the SD&G County Council meeting to be held in Cornwall on August 22nd, 2016. Library Strategic Plans come and go, but the main mandate of any library service is to provide access to their resources, not close branches. These small branch libraries located in our
small rural communities are more than just places! They are the mainstay of our small communities in which they are located. These “disposable” branches are the front porches of our communities. They are places we can walk to for those of us without transportation, where we meet one another and get to know our neighbours, where we share our love of reading, knowledge, recipes, crafts, etc., where we take our children to give them the gift of learning to read and life-long learning, where we have access to computers, photocopiers, fax machines, important for those on fixed incomes. Each time a branch is closed, the negative ripple effect it creates for residents, users and the community as a whole is overwhelming. This continuous upheaval regarding libraries within the counties has got to stop! Previously, these small towns decided they needed a library for their residents. What makes Library Admin and the Library Board think that this
rationale has changed? All is quiet for awhile, and then all hell breaks out again –the midnight movers arrive to clear the resources out the building and lock the doors. In closing, it is hoped that members of the SD&G County Council can appreciate the need for these small library branches to be retained in their local communities and will instruct the Library Board accordingly. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Sunset Party Patio Fundraiser was held Saturday, Aug. 13 from 6-9 p.m. in the All Ranks Mess Hall at the Nav Canada Centre in Cornwall. The event included a meal, a speaker, a silent auction, and live music by Mena Hardy. Organized by Exsellence Team Realty Brokerage in conjunction with Investago Realty in Ottawa, all funds will be donated to the Soldier On fund, a Canadian charity which provides funds for Canadian veterans that suffer from wounds, PTSD or other related difficulties and help their recovery. Having been inspired by a client, the owner of Investago Realty, whose spouse spent time in Afghanistan and suffered from Posttraumatic Stress Syndrome, members of Exsellence Team Realty chose to direct this year’s fundraiser to aiding soldiers. “We thought it would be a great fund to support. Not a lot of charities in this area are directed that way (towards supporting troops), and we felt that this was something that was good, and at the same time, we had somebody who has been directly impacted,” shared Vicki Vanderveen and Hana Novotny, owners of Exsellence and organizers of the event. Vanderveen also hoped that veterans in the area would attend the event in order to support the cause through their community. “Historically, you hear that stress or mental issues aren’t really recognised as much as they can be, and it’s a little bit of a stigma, but it’s about time that people are stepping forward and recognising that these are legitimate injuries and they deserve the help that they’re getting through this kind of charity” offered Derek McEwen, also a member of Exsellence Team Realty. This is Excellence’s second charity event, the first being for Hospice Cornwall which served to raise over $13, 000. To contact Exsellence Team Realty Brokerage: Tel. 613-935-5777 or visit exsellenceteamrealty. ca.

Creating homemade glass art to Raise money for Hospice Cornwall CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall resident Violet Michtell has experienced the loving support Hospice Cornwall can provide to people going through the most difficult of times. She is now trying to raise money for the hospice through yard sales, and through selling homemade sculptures and birdbaths she’s created with old glassware. Violet’s daughter, Christina Archambault, 30, is currently being cared for by Hospice Cornwall and Violet greatly appreciates the support that they have given her daughter and her family in this difficult time. Until recently, Violet had been caring for her daughter’s children, two boys, 7 and 11-years-old. Violet said that the boys had lost their father to cystic fibrosis four years ago and it is that much more difficult now that they are losing their mother too. She said that Hospice Cornwall has made things easier for her family.
Violet Mitchell is raising money for Hospice Cornwall by selling her homemade artwork on her front lawn on Cumberland Street. She hopes to raise more with a yard sale, and is asking the community to donate items (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

“I wanted to give something back to thank them for the great work they do and how good they are to families,” she said. Violet makes her birdbaths out of old glassware, like salad bowls, serving plates and vases. She said she had never created stuff like this before, but learned through Pintrest. In addition to the birdbaths, she also makes glass sculptures, again out of old vases and other glassware, that she calls “angels”. The angels are $40 each and the birdbaths are $25 each. All of her work is on display on her front lawn on Cumberland Street. Violet said that through selling her birdbaths, along with a yard sale held earlier this summer, she has managed to raise $500 for Hospice Cornwall. She is hoping to raise more and have another yard sale, but is asking the community for help in finding stuff to sell. If anyone has something they would like to donate to Violet Mitchell for her to next yard sale in support of Hospice Cornwall, they are encouraged to drop it off at 1234A Cumberland Street.

The Fines are now at Home Nick Wolochatiuk, Special to TC Media INGLESIDE, Ontario - After a two year search for an area that has business opportunities and is an appealing place to live, Murray Fines and his extended family have set up shop in the SD&G area. “We operated a store in Shelburne, Ontario for 22 years. For two years we searched for an area in Ontario that would meet our criteria. This part of SD&G was it. Ingleside is about 3,500 in population, the same as Shelburne. The Cornwall Home Hardware was slated for closure December 31, so we took it as a signal it was time to make a move.”
And move they did. Murray and Scott Fines and their extended families have found just the right homes in the Ingleside area. The store now has a warehouse that provides more than 10,000 square feet of secure storage space. Surrounding it is a large paved storage yard for building materials, with a fence perimeter. On Friday August 12 the official opening took place. Five Home Hardware head office staff from St. Jacobs, Ontario were in attendance. South Stormont Mayor and several of the councilors were also on hand to welcoming the latest boost to the local economy and addition to its shopping facilities.

“Clean up the earth now” is the rallying cry. Who’s going to do it? Point the finger in the right direction - ourselves. Here are a few things we can all do that will have an impact. 1. Think reusable. Use cleaning cloths instead of paper towels and so on. 2. Use concentrated cleaners. Cleaning chemicals that you mix in your own spray bottles with water. 3. Recycle the cleaning product containers that can be recycled. 4. Dispose of leftover or outdated cleaning products safely. Check with local Environmental Agency if in doubt. 5. Take care of everything you have. This will double the life of most things and drastically reduce both the need for new purchases and the solid waste problem in garbage sites. 6. Don’t use more of any cleaning solution (laundry, dish detergents etc…) than you need. Cleaning chemicals are designed to work at a certain ratio of dilution. If you add more to the water than the label says, it won’t just leave dulling detergent residue and call for extra rinsing. It’ll actually lessen the solution’s dirt-dissolving power. 7. Don’t procrastinate. Waiting to clean almost doubles the energy and cleaning supplies needed to accomplish the job. 8. Clean up after ourselves. Right! If from today on we would all take just five minutes and pick up just after ourselves, we wouldn’t spend so much time on cleaning.
