Talent from near and far took the stage at Cornwall’s first annual Musicfest Mary McCann, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Limelight Music and Arts Academy, in partnership with Nav Canada and boom101.9 radio, hosted the first Cornwall Musicfest on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 2 – 10 p.m. at Nav Canada Centre in Cornwall. The event involved approximately 12 musical acts, most of which were local, including Cornwall-born artist Paul Deslauriers and his band The Paul Deslauriers Band, as well as the very entertaining Sean McCann of Great Big Sea, and Brad

Roberts of Crash Test Dummies. Food and drink were also available for sale in tents at the location. “With the lack of music festivals now with Lift Off being gone…my business partner and I (Jason Mitchell)… figured it was time for Cornwall to have a new festival and bring some cool entertainment.” said Davie Bedard, an owner of Limelight Music and Arts Academy. “I’m a musician and an artist, and it’s something that’s a part of me and my business partner, and we feel that the artists need to be celebrated in

Cornwall…It’s nice to be able to bring the people from outside and the people from Cornwall together.” Bedard and Mitchell are not alone in their belief that Cornwall is overdue for another festival and venue for musicians. Bruce Ciccarelli, a local artist, shared his enthusiasm for the event: “It looks like it’s going to be a great day… I hope that Cornwall gets behind this…we’ve got some great bands coming out. A lot of local people get the chance to play. It’s great that Cornwall is doing something here, and I hope that it’s well received. There are very few music venues, so it’s hard to kind of establish yourself locally.” “It’s a good venue for Cornwall. I miss when we had Liftoff and all of the music that went

with that, so when I had seen it [the advert for Musicfest], it was like, yeah gotta go” offered Debra-Lynn Belfeuille, an attendee of the event. “Personally I feel that Cornwall has a lot to offer…I like what they have to offer. It’s a small town with big possibilities kind of thing.” Sean McCann of Great Big Sea was delighted to have been invited to perform. “I love Cornwall, and it needs a music festival…I’ve been around here and I know it’s a good venue, so when they told me it was here, I’m like, “That could work.”” Upon being asked if he’d return, the Newfoundland native eagerly said he’d love to return. “I think it’s great, and it seems like a really great crowd of people all about the music. It’s a really great feeling here.” McCann is looking forward to returning to Cornwall in November for his own show at Aultsville Theatre. The organizers of Cornwall Musicfest are thrilled with event, and hope to make it an annual occurrence to give an opportunity to local artists and visitors alike to share their work. CORNWALL, Ontario - John Milnes, 84, of Long Sault has been trying to overcome what he says is the bureaucracy that has prevented him from getting his drivers license. Milnes was in attendance for a press conference at the office of Stormonth-Dundas and South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonnell where McDonell announced the launching of a petition to cut the red tape for seniors. Milnes, first had his license suspended 12 years ago after he suffered a stroke that doctors said would leave him paralyzed and without the ability to talk, he overcame those obstacles to driving, but new ones emerged when he turned 80. The Ontario government requires all drivers 80 and over to take a driving test every two years on or before their birthday. Milnes says that he is still perfectly capable of driving, but that the requirements of the government just for him to get to do the test are overly onerous. “Last Summer, I drove through California, and this past Spring I drove through Europe without any problems,” Milnes said. He had to take these trips with a temporary license as he was unable to take the required test to get his full-time license back. Milnes said he had 3 cancellations from the Ministry of Transportation, before he finally was able to take, and pass, the test. The test, which is similar to a G1 driving test includes an hour long movie about the effects of aging on drivers, an eye-test and a cognition test. If the applicants fail this test, then they have to take a road test with a driving instructor and an occupational therapist at the cost of $850. Seniors who have to take the road test also have to travel to Ottawa to do it because there is no place available here in Cornwall. Milnes feel that the test could be administered much more efficiently. “Why do I have to go to a specific place, at a specific time to take a specific test, all of which is dictated to me by the government,” he asked. “Why can’t I just go to an Ontario Service station at my own leisure to take this test?” “I’m in favour of the eye testing the cognitive testing and the video being in one place we an go to at our convenience,” he continued. “That way we don’t have to waste half our afternoon because at our age, every hour is important.” MPP Jim McDonell agrees that this process can be done better for seniors. “Its every 2 years, and it is inconvenient. If there are delays it can mess up your travel plans. It seems like a little bit much,” he said. “There are more convenient ways to do this for sure.” McDonell’s petition is calling on the Ontario government to fix the problem. “The Ontario Government implemented a mandatory test and education session prior to allowing a senior aged 80 and over to renew their license,” MPP McDonell explained in a press release announcing the petition. “While this requirement may be understandable from a narrow, cognition-focused point of view, it is a significant inconvenience for seniors to begin with. The Ministry of Transportation has bungled this program from the very beginning. Seniors can’t get through to the appointment

UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - Chief Superintendent Daniel Redmond, Regional Commander for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region is pleased to announce that Staff Sergeant Michael Mulhearn has been promoted to the rank of Inspector effective August 1, 2016. He has assumed the Detachment Commander role for Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SD&G) OPP. Inspector Mulhearn replaces Inspector BJ MacDonald who recently transferred to East Region Headquarters. Inspector Mulhearn has been with the OPP for 29 years, serving virtually his entire career in SD&G. Mike joined the OPP in 1987 and was promoted to Sergeant in 1998. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 2012 and has served as the Operations Manager and Support Manager for the SD&G Detachment. For eleven months in 2015 and 2016, Mulhearn served as the acting Commander for the Hawkesbury Detachment. Inspector Mulhearn brings a wide range of experience to his new position, with a strong knowledge of the communities he serves and an equally strong understanding of the OPP’s commitment to community policing. “I am very pleased to have Mike as our new Detachment Commander”, stated Mr. Dennis Fife, Chair of the SD&G Police Services Board. “I have worked with Mike for several years and have always been satisfied with his performance.” “It’s a privilege for me to continue serving the communities of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry,” says Inspector Mulhearn. “I look forward to enhancing the relations we have with our community and policing partners.”

All sorts of fandom on show at CoTiCon Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Every fandom under the sun was on show at this year’s CoTiCon, held at the Cornwall Civic Complex. CoTiCon worked together with Beyond 21’s Foodfest this year to bring both shows to the next level. CoTiCon sent a team of stormtrooper cosplayers marching up the street to Foodfest for the entertainment of the children at Pommier Jewelers Kids Zone. “It was really fun,” said CoTiCon organizer Annie Derouchie. “Beyond 21 was over the moon when they saw us.” Events at CoTiCon this year included a Zelda

Quest where participants had to search and defeat a boss monster and the Pokémon Gotta Catch ‘Em All Game where players were given clues that lead them to pokémon puzzle pieces. The first team to complete the puzzle was the winner. The day also had a gamers room where participants could play classic Super Nintendo games and compete against each other in Super Smash Bros. A highlight of the day was the Pokémon pageant where participants could bring and dress up their Pokémon plush toys. The event was filled with vendors and cosplayers. Organizer Annie Derouchie felt that the convention had really grown this year and was thrilled with the support.

Emma, Alex and Izzy Wilson pose with a Sandperson, Kylo Ren and a Ti Fighter cosplayer at Foodfest on Pitt Street on Saturday, August 20. CoTiCon teamed up with Beyond 21 to send over cosplayers to have fun and take pictures with the kids at Foodfest (Nick Seebruch / Seaway News).

Concerned about big dogs Editor: I am writing as a concerned parent and dog owner. I have 3 young children and a small dog. On Sunday August 14th, the day after two adults were visciously attacked by + two dogs in Orleans, I was at the Guindon Park boat launch with my 5 and 3 year old, my mother-in-law, and our small dog Abby. Three women arrived with a large dog and began playing fetch with it in the water. They didn’t notice us, so I asked nicely if the dog was friendly, and told them we had a small dog with us and were sitting nearby having a snack. She said the dog was dog friendly. A few minutes later, we finished and began walking to another spot. As we quietly walked away with my dog on her leash, the woman’s large

dog charged out of the water, unprovoked, pinning my small dog to the ground, viciously biting my dog repeatedly. Stopping the attack was not easy. I and my mother-in-law yelled, with no help from the owner, pulled and swatted at the dog for what seemed like forever. It was a very frightening incident for all of us, especially my children. The women drove off with a quick ‘sorry’, and didn’t offer her name or number. Thankfully my dog will be fine, thanks to the kind and excellent care from the emergency vet at St. Lawrence Animal Hospital. What I find very unsettling is this is my 3rd large dog incident in Cornwall in the last 5 months. When I was 9 months pregnant, I took my dog for an evening walk. A dog off leash in my own neighbourhood

charged down it’s driveway and tried to bite my dog. Luckily Abby was not bitten that time, as she moved quick enough. Later in June, I was walking to pick up my oldest child from school, with my toddler in the wagon and newborn in a sling. A man let his 2 rottweilers off their leash in front of me. When I kindly asked him to put them back on their leash because we would be following him, the dogs ran over and stood about an inch from my toddler’s face while he ate his snack. The man swore his dogs were friendly, but he didn’t understand that under no circumstances should my child be intimidated by such large animals, or heaven forbid, mauled in the face because he scared them, or didn’t want to share his snack. Children can be unpredictable, even to their parents. Luckily, my toddler stayed still and calm,

though he burst into tears afterwards. I find myself scared now, not knowing how to protect my children and our family dog from these incidents. I love big dogs, but I can no longer trust them, or an owner who has his or her dog off leash or who tells me their dog is friendly. What happened to my dog, I never want to happen to my children. I would like to remind big dog owners to please be careful with their dog. Ensure you always have control of your dog around others, and be considerate of others. You might trust your animals, but I don’t. To avoid these situations for myself and to protect my 3 kids I will now leave my dog at home, and if I see a big dog off leash, I will go the other way. Also why is rural Ontario the dumping ground for the Liberal’s wind and solar farms in which people who are Liberal friendly or pay huge amounts of cash to attend Liberal fundraising events or donate to the Liberal party have gotten rewarded by receiving solar contracts which cost us 3-1/2 times more than would have in the States and twice as much on

wind power. No one in Ontario should be cut of hydro while the Americans, Quebec, & Manitoba are getting our hydro for free or pennies a kwh due to us over producing it which in any other product would mean lower prices due to overstocks. Ross Ayotte, Smiths Falls, ON

Hydro rate dishonesty there was brown outs in Toronto and we had generators in the streets in Toronto and there is a cost associated with this so I ask why did they promise to freeze hydro rates if they say the problem was as bad then as they continue to repeat today and what does this have to do with rural Ontario paying the highest hydro rates in North America.

Editor: When the Ontario Liberals came to power in 2003 our hydro rates were 4.3 cents a kwh all day long and they even promised not to raise hydro rates till 2007 but we all know rates went up almost immediately and if you paid attention you would of noticed every energy minister repeats the same line, when we came to power

CORNWALL, Ontario - Community members came together yet again, to support another great cause on Friday afternoon at Summerheights Golf Links but the focus at the 16th Annual Alzheimer Society Golf Tournament was about more than just raising money. The participating golfers were also asked to become dementia friendly. Executive Director of The Alzheimer Society, Shelly Vaillancourt, explained “We’re encouraging the 110 golfers here to go out and spread the news and then to request that people become dementia friendly”. She added “We are asking every golfer to become a dementia friend and we’re trying to promote it in a multitude of ways. One way is as individuals, for them to identify themselves as friends so they know what our charity is and what supports we provide to people, so if somebody in their neighbourhood or somebody they work with has it they know that we exist and can let them know there is support available”. The 18-hole shotgun tournament got underway at 11am and golfers were treated to a BBQ lunch along with hole activities, with a steak dinner and silent auction to follow afterwards. “It’s a full day and evening event, not just the day of golf. There’s lots of prizes and it’s a good time for everyone involved” said Adrian Bugelli, one of the event coordinators. He went on to say “The turnout is better than it was last year and we’re all here to have a good time and to raise money for a great cause”. The annual Investors Group tournament was brought together by staff at the Alzheimer Society office as well as many volunteers, including

United Counties hear loud objections to Library closures Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - Protesters were left with standing room only in Council Chambers during their Aug. 22 meeting. They were there to air their objections to the Library Board’s decision at their July 29 meeting to close three branches. Each branch to be closed, Dalkeith, Morewood and St. Andrew’s West each had a representative present their case to council. Brenda Noble and Leo Lehtiniemi represented Dalkieth and Noble motioned Council to override the Board’s decision and remove Board Chair, Councillor Bill McGimpsey. Cal Martin, head of the Save our SD&G Libraries group laid out their argument for the reversal of the closures. He argued that the reasoning to close the branches was flawed as was the process. In April there was a public meeting at the Williamstown Library where Martin asserts that there would be public consultations before any closures are made, but that that never happened. “Even if you agree with the closure of these branches, you cannot agree with the process,” Martin said. “It is offensive to what we stand for here in SD&G. The meeting was called on short notice, on the Friday before a long-weekend and right before the Highland Games.” “The St. Andrew’s West branch is in the top half of all 18 library branches in terms of borrowers,” argued Martin. “The Board is closing one branch that is more efficient than others.”

Martin argued that the Council had already approved the money for the libraries for this budget year and asked that no closures be considered until the next budget meeting. He warned that the Provincial Ombudsman had been informed about the Boards methods in passing the resolution to close the library branches and that the Ministry of Culture was looking into it. One reason given by the Board for the closure of these three branches was that they lacked accessibility. Laurie Rae, a patron of the Morewood Library said that for her, this was not true. “I have two disabled daughters,” she said. “If the library was not wheelchair accessible I would not be here today. I feel betrayed by the Library Board and this decision shows a lack of respect for the people,” she added. Warden Jamie MacDonald vacated the Chair during the council meeting to address the issue. “These delegations had no choice but to come here because their branches are being closed on little notice,” he said. “There were supposed to be public consultations, who put a stop to them?” “In previous years, do you know how many summer meetings were held in July or August? Zero,” he continued. “Proper consultation was promised before a closure would be considered by the Board. Dalkeith was added to the list of branches to be closed 30 seconds before the meeting, does that sound like proper consultation to you? People revile politicians for backroom dealings and is it really a surprise?” Warden MacDonald said in closing that decisions like these kill small towns and that library

Councillor McGimpsey replied to the comments of Warden MacDonald and the five other councillors who echoed them. McGimpsey laid out his argument as to why these branches were not sustainable. “Non library users told us that the library has no services that interest them,” he said. “Users said they use other branched because they have better services. Morewood has 54 patrons, St. Andrew’s West has 12 new members, this is not enough. People are going into other communities anyway to use their services.” McGimpsey then explained the process and

indicated that Board members were aware of the July 29 meeting a month in advance. After McGimpsey completed his remarks an elderly man in the crowd shouted “Dishonest!” Councillor Prevost asked the Library Board to have a meeting Sept. 3 and postponed the closures so the decision and the process can be reconsidered. Council made no motion to overturn the Board’s decision. CAO Tim Simpson informed the Council that Council had no power to over turn decisions of the Board and that the Ombudsman had no jurisdiction to investigate it.

Cornwall Food Fest serves up great fun for a great cause Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - It was a street food extravaganza on Pitt Street today. Crowds and vendors from near and far crammed on to the two block stretch between First and Second Streets, all enjoying a day of great food and entertainment in the Seaway city. Now in its second year, Cornwall Food Fest is ready to feed the city once again and, the best part is, it’s all for a great cause. “We started an hour earlier this year and we had people from 10 o’clock and on,” said Beyond 21 program manager, and event organizer, Jane McClaren. “We have lots of things going on all day, throughout the day to entertain...our children’s area was jam packed by 10 o’clock this morning.” Judges will be sampling the excellent fare from each vendor throughout the day, and will be announcing the prize winners with a post to the event’s Facebook page at 6 pm. This year’s judges include MPP Jim McDonnell, local radio personality Jentry VanBaal, police chief Dan Parkinson, along with deputy fire chief Bruce Donig and Brian Dufresne.

Live music and refreshments are served in the licenced entertainment tent, with bands and artists scheduled to perform throughout the day. “This is what a downtown should be like. I’m loving the vibe,” said Beyond 21 community skills facilitator Sandy Marsolais. Food vendors were also happy to be in on the action, with a few returning from last year but many making today their Cornwall Food Fest premier. “We’re very excited to be here for a great event, and support a local fundraiser,” said Sheep’s Head general manager, Hassan Rafiei. “It’s our first year, last year we were just a few weeks away from our grand opening. We’re here dishing out some Halifax donair and seafood chowder. We’re bringing the east coast classics to Cornwall.” Apart from providing foodies and food lovers with a great opportunity to experience the excellent cuisine, the event’s primary goal is to raise money for local organization Beyond 21. Beyond 21 assists adults with disabilities, enabling them to live more connected and

Beyond 21 is about as well.”

(NC)—Are noises in your house keeping you awake at night? Do you feel stressed even at home? Reducing the noise in your house will help improve your physical and mental health – and is easy with a proper insulation upgrade. “Many homeowners don’t realize the noise control benefits that come with adequate insulation. Insulation products, such as QuietZone® acoustic batts, can help significantly reduce the unwanted noise echoing throughout a house, whether it’s your teenage children laughing or a TV blaring in another room,” says Cheryl West, insulation expert at Owens Corning. “Engineered specifically for noise control, these products can help families enjoy the peace and quiet of their

home.” How to get started? For bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens or laundry rooms, Owens Corning recommends installing QuietZone® acoustic batts between interior walls, ceilings and floors to help reduce noise. This can help minimize the sound of noisy appliances, entertainment equipment or your pets from drifting throughout your home. Not only will updated insulation allow you to sleep well at night, but it will also help reduce the negative impact on the environment. How? With eco-friendly products, such as PINK™ FIBERGLAS® insulation, made from over 70* per cent recycled content, you will help turn waste into useable products.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAF) Wing 424, Cornwall, held its 12th annual fundraiser Saturday Aug. 20. This event is to raise money to fund renovations for the historic building. Built in 1866, the original building is in desperate need of renewal. With a new lease signed, the RCAF will continue to reside at 240 Water Street West until at least 2023. Don Ross, President of Wing 424 explained the importance of this fundraiser when he said, “It brings in revenue to keep our

building and pay for the renovation.” Marcel Leduc, the Organizational Chair, who also negotiated the lease, said, “In the last three years over $120, 000 has been spent in building renovations.” These updates include all new electrical, plumbing and the new ramp located at the rear of the building. The next project for the RCAF is already planned. “This evening is for a new dance floor and new floor for the dining room,” Leduc also said. The fundraiser included live music on the patio with fresh corn, Black Angus B.B.Q. steak dinner and dessert, music by Plan B a seven piece band and a silent auction.

DonalD anD Hillary Go into a Bakery

Donald and Hillary go Into a Bakery on the campaign trail. As soon as they enter the bakery, Hillary steals three pastries and puts them in her pocket. She says to Donald, “See how clever I am? The owner didn’t see anything and I don’t even need to lie. I will definitely win the election.” The Donald says to Hillary, “That’s the typical dishonesty you have displayed throughout your entire life, trickery and deceit. I am going to show you an honest way to get the same result.” Donald goes to the owner of the bakery and says, “Give me a pastry and I will show you a magic trick.” Intrigued, the owner accepts and gives him a pastry. Trump swallows it and asks for another one. The owner gives him another one. Then Donald asks for a third pastry and eats that, too. The owner is starting to wonder where the magic trick is and asks, “What did you do with the pastries?” Trump replies, “Look in Hillary’s pocket”...

Message from the Ontario SPCA: Every year across Canada, tens of thousands of healthy, adoptable animals are euthanized because there are not enough adoptive homes available. Pet overpopulation is at a crisis level in Ontario and is undeniably perpetuated one litter at a time. By making the responsible choice to spay or neuter your pet, you will become part of the pet overpopulation solution and will improve the lives of countless animals.
