Making music for mental health Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A group of local musicians will be holding a night of fun, dance and music at the Legion Hall on Second Street West on Sunday, Sept. 25 in support of the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation’s children’s wing of the new Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Centre. The concert is being put on with the help of the Service Council, who have pledged to raise $250, 000 for the children’s wing of the Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Centre over five years. So far the Service Council has raised $170, 000 and hopes to add another $5, 000 with this fundraiser. There will be around 18 musicians from the band known as The Retreads who will be taking the stage from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. One of those musicians is former Cornwall City Councillor Syd Gardiner. “We were sitting around here talking and asked the guys if they were interested in doing something for the Treatment Centre,” he said. “Some of us have had lost musical friends and band-mates to drugs.” Gardiner said that drug and mental health problems are something that he has witnessed in this city for a long time. “I remember a few years ago a young woman was stabbed by a mentally ill person outside of the old Walmart here in Cornwall,” Gardiner said. “She was lucky, there were people there to help her. We’ve never had a

Clifton was declared not criminally responsible for his actions and was treated at the Brockville Mental Health Centre. “I think the problem here with mental healthcare is that there were eight satellite units and there was no consistency,” said

Marvin Plumadore, President of the Service Council and one of the event’s organizers. “There are around 1, 700 kids being treated at this new centre and most of them are under seven years-old.” Plumadore says that this new centre will be able to provide new care and also bring in new perspectives on mental healthcare that this community did not have before. “Our new hospital is bringing in new professionals and this facility will bring in new

professionals too,” he said. The concert will feature country western music, light rock, bluegrass and some Elvis songs. Admission is $15 per-ticket and includes a quarter chicken dinner. “This fundraiser will be successful by people dropping in and having fun, it is a fun day,” said Gardiner. Tickets are available now at Legion Branch 297, 413 Second Street West.

SD&G Library Board votes to not overturn closure of three branches UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - At a Special Meeting of the Library Board held on Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Board voted not to overturn their decision to shut three branches of the library. For more than a month, the Library Board has been the centre of controversy over their decision to close the library branches in St. Andrews, Dalkeith and Morewood and over the methods they undertook to bring about the closures. In response to public concern, the Library Board called the special meeting on Tuesday. More than 40 protesters were in attendance. The Board heard testimony from representatives of the three branches. Cal Martin, the organizer behind the Save our SD&G Libraries group, spoke on behalf of the St. Andrew’s Library. “The amount of people here today speaks volumes about this issue,”Martin said. “Library Chair has said operation of 3 branches is higher than the operation cost of the most expensive branch, this is not true. Either the Board or the Library administration is presenting false information.” Martin then went on to say that despite hurdles faced by the St. Andrew’s Library, they have still persevered. “The St. Andrew’s library has received inadequate support,” he said. “The St. Andrew’s branch was setup for failure, but it did not fail. Despite these hurdles it is still 5th cheapest branch.” In his closing statements, Martin dropped a bombshell that he would push for the county of South Stormont to secede from the United Counties Library system.

Each county could pass a by-law to leave the United Counties Libraries and setup their own. “Because of the disrespect shown by this board’s decision South Stormont could vote to leave the United Counties Library system and take $500, 000 share of the budget with it,”he said.“With that money we could setup our own 3 branch library system. If you do not vote to reconsider your decision to close library branches, I will not stop in my effort to convince South Stormont to leave the Library system. All that I am asking is that you follow a fair and transparent process.” Before the vote to rescind their decision to close the St. Andrew’s, Dalkeith and Morewood branches of the Library took place, United Counties Warden Jamie MacDonald made a statement to the Board. Everyone knows where I stand on this,” he said. “The decision made on July 29 was complete lack of process and transparency. Those types of decisions make politicians look bad. We have no real plan for this. I’m really tired about hearing about stats,” he continued. “Stats don’t mean anything unless you’re comparing them to something consistent. In Dalkeith we don’t have the same hours and resources. We are always putting the onus on people to bring in more members, but the onus should be on us. Today, we must vote to rescind that decision of July 29 and vote to build up our libraries, not destroy them,” he finished to a standing ovation from the crowd gathered. Despite these presentations and pleas, by a margin of 3-2, the Board voted to maintain their decision to close the St. Andrew’s, Morewood and Dalkeith branches of the United Counties Library.

Branches of the United Counties of SD&G Library. The motion was defeated 3-2 (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

The meeting adjourned after the vote was decided. “I’m stunned and disappointed,”Warden Jamie Macdonald said. “The delegates spoke well and passionately today. The Library Board acts on its own so I think this will be the final call.” Cal Martin re-iterated his plan to encourage South Stormont to secede from the SD&G Library system. “This type of move is not unprecedented and would only require the Township to pass a by-law to leave the library system and setup a new one,” he said. “While the mayor has not voiced his support for this plan yet, because we haven’t presented it to council yet, he has said he is opposed to this decision by the Library Board.” Bill McGimpsey, the chairman of the Library Board and one of its members who voted in favour

of the closures has been at the centre of the controversy surrounding this decision. McGimpsey stated that the Library system would need an additional $350, 000 next year if these branches were to remain open. “Of our budget, 75 percent goes towards staffing and to keep up with the cost of living, that alone is a significant increase every year,” McGimpsey said. The issue had been raised as to why the Board made this decision now and did not wait until the 2017 budget meeting. McGimpsey said that making the decision now would have a minimal impact on savings for 2016, but would free up $80, 000 per branch in resources for next year. “It is not a pleasant or popular decision,” he said. “Politicians aren’t lining up behind us on this and have preferred to stay out of it.”

OPG hosts Teddy Bear Picnic to give back to community

6 - Thursday, September 8, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - What better way to spend the last Sunday of the summer holidays than with cute, cuddly teddy bears, on a sunny afternoon? Thanks to new summer programming at the Ontario Power Generation visitor centre, over a hundred visitors got to delight in arts and crafts, and fun learning while playing with their fury little friends. “The turnout has been great so far,” said Kasey Sleeman, an organizer for the event. “The teddy bear picnic is just a way to give back to the community a little bit.” “We have arts and crafts, they can build crowns or just make pictures. Then we have our medic station…and we have the community police here, doing a Race Against Drugs demo, and we have a fire truck,” said Sleeman. Ample entertainment for the family was available during the picnic, with the much attention going to the medical station for injured teddies. Children were able to have their teddy bears treated for any injuries at a medic tent, where bandages were provided in addition to a cookie. “It’s just something fun for the kids, they really like it,” said summer employee Tanner Smith, who was responsible for treating the ailments of the teddy bears. “Plus they get a

cookie.” Cornwall’s emergency services were also on hand to help out the community today. The event featured a Cornwall fire truck for families to have a chance to explore, and meet with local firemen. The Cornwall Community Police Services were also on hand with their Race Against Drugs care to promote safety and healthy living for children. After one hour of being open to the public, the picnic already had over a hundred visitors stop by to check out what was on offer the OPG visitor centre. “It’s a good day for a picnic,” said Anna Rowe, mother of Elizabeth and Margaret who were enjoying the arts and crafts station. “I’m pretty happy with this turnout so far. This is the first event I’ve helped with,” said summer employee Charlie Major. With so many smiling faces around the crafts table and medical tent, it’s easy to see that these little stuffed friends bring out a lot of happiness on a fun, Sunday afternoon.

Friends Ella Hopkins and Charlotte McCarthy enjoy the day together with their other friends Tim, Spot, and Tigger (Marc Benoit/ Seaway News).

One last day of summer fun for Labour Day picnic goers Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario - For most of us, today is the last day of the months long summer holiday. It’s the final day before going back to school or the office after a long and relaxing summer vacation. But, for the organizers who worked to make today’s Labour Day Picnic a success, today is a celebration worth everyone’s attention. “I’ve been involved for over twenty years…” said long time labour advocate, Elaine MacDonald. “We tend to put on a pretty good show, and food is free, so it tends to bring people out.” The annual Labour Day Picnic was held again at Lamoureux Park this year, and was met with perfect weather for a day outdoors. Entertainment for the entire family, hot dogs, drinks, and the last opportunity to enjoy the summer holidays helped

bring out a crowd of roughly two hundred people. Organized by the local Labour Council, the event included representation from various unions which are active in the Cornwall area. “There is a lot of union pride here…It’s a chance to wear your union colours,” said MacDonald. Picnic goers were entertained by Lil John, a clown performer who kept crowds engaged through funny jokes, participatory dancing, hula hoop contests, and the promise of free prizes, all led from the Lion’s Club Bandshell. The bike path running through the park was a temporary rail line for the afternoon, providing joy rides for children and young families through all the excitement. “It’s a chance to celebrate all the gains that workers have made. You know, workers benefits, sick leave, pensions, and things like this,” said

MacDonald. MacDonald has worked to promote workers’ rights as part of the labour movement for most of her professional career. More recently, she has held the position of city councillor since the 2006 local elections. “We are going to what they call precarious work, and there is no job security there and no benefits, so we need to fight against that,” said MacDonald. “It hurts the business too, because part-timers don’t have the same buy in if their loyalties are divided between two or three places of important.” “We need to be conscious of those things, because we can’t ever let them become background issues.” The Labour Day Picnic plans to return again next year. It is free to the public and held every year in Cornwall on Labour Day at Lamoureux Park.

City councilor Elaine MacDonald keeps busy during the Labour Day Picnic, an event she has been helping out with for over two decades (Marc Benoit/ TC Media).

Flag raised to kickoff Child Cancer Awareness Month Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy was on hand to help children who have been afflicted with cancer and their parents raise a flag in honour of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which begins Sept. 1. The golden flag is a part of an effort to paint the town gold to help raise awareness. Cherly Tourangeau’s son Alex was diagnosed with and aggressive form of Leukemia in 2013. At the City Council Meeting on Aug. 8, Cherly made a presentation to council on why awareness on this issue is so important. “There are 1, 400 kids every year who are diagnosed with pediatric cancer in Canada, that’s four a day,” she said. “The average survival rate is 80 percent. Alex’s chances are 85 percent survival, but there are some kids for whom the survival chance is zero percent. Four kids that were in Alex’s cancer summer camp last year are gone

now. Pediatric cancers only receive 4 percent of cancer research funding,” she continued. “When a child dies of cancer, that is 71-years of contributions to society that are lost.” Tourangeau is encouraging everyone in Cornwall to display a little gold to show their support. “Something as simple as a gold ribbon can help draw attention to this issue,” she said. “I would like to encourage all city departments, businesses, and residents to “paint” Cornwall gold in September to visually show these children and their families our support and to bring awareness to childhood cancer,” Tourangeau wrote in her presentation. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Civic Complex will host the annual Mayor-Media and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Blood Donor Clinic. “During the summer months, we all change our routines and take vacations, so donating blood isn’t always top of mind. Meanwhile, daily in our region, there are hospital patients who

requirements for blood. I am hoping this year will be the same. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the media for their continuing support in sponsoring the clinic, which is a summer tradition in Cornwall.”

The intensive training was scheduled after Julie Quesnel and Tracy Wheeler, purchased an Assist-2-Sell franchise office for Cornwall, Ontario and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. Julie Quesnel and Tracy Wheeler were joined in Reno by seven new Assist-2-Sell franchise owners from all over the United States.

I went to Reno to learn more about operating an Assist-2-Sell franchise but left with so much more,” said Julie Quesnel, who also serves as the Broker of Record for Assist-2Sell Cornwall Realty. “Mary LaMeres-Pomin, and Lyle Martin, the founders of Assist-2-Sell, taught many of the classes, which was incredible. I learned so much and I’m really excited about implementing the ideas and systems” Assist-2-Sell’s “Full Service with $avings!”® program has been refined over the last 25 plus years and sets Assist-2-Sell apart from

other real estate companies. Consumers who work with a local Assist-2-Sell office have a team of qualified real estate professionals working for them; taking care of everything throughout the entire process of buying and/or selling a house. Tracy Wheeler added, “We’re really going to focus on educating consumers about Assist-2-Sell’s full-service, discount real estate services. We really believe in the concept and want everyone to know that Assist2-Sell makes buying and selling a home easier and more enjoyable… and you can save a

lot of money in the process.” Assist-2-Sell Cornwall Realty is owned and operated by Julie Quesnel and Tracy Wheeler. North America’s Leading Discount Real Estate CompanySM, Assist-2-Sell provides home sellers with full brokerage services for as low as $2,995 + HST for homes up to $300,000, saving consumers in Cornwall as well as in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry thousands in commissions.1 Homebuyers also have access to a full range of services. CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Lions Club will be holding a Bed Race and Dance on Saturday, Sept. 24. Local businesses are encouraged to donate a bed and race as a team and there will be a special category for high school teams. Registration is $200 and all participants will be given a receipt. “We view this project as another way to stay visible in the City,” said John Locke, Co-chair of the event. “One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised from this event will remain in the community.” The Lions Club has also been busy making beds of their own that teams can rent for $25 each. Prizes will be awarded to the best decorated bed, the best decorated team and the fastest bed. Those businesses who need a little extra push can count on high school volunteers who will be willing to help get their bed to the finish line. There will be a $500 prize for the winning high school team and $500 prize for the team that wins with a non-student team. The race will be run along Pitt Street between First and Second Streets. That evening there will be a Dance at 7 p.m. at the Civic Complex where the prizes will also be awarded.

Lobster Macaroni & Cheese In a large oven-proof pot, melt 8 tablespoons of butter and whisk in the flour. Over low heat, whisk constantly for 2-3 minutes to create a roux. Gradually whisk in the warm milk. Continue constant whisking 2 more minutes until the mixture is smooth and thick. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in both

cheeses. Add the cooked macaroni. Place the pot in the preheated oven and bake 35-40 minutes or until the edges of the top noodles are nicely browned. When the noodles are almost done, melt the remaining two tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan. Stir in the minced garlic, then the

breadcrumbs. Mix well and cook only until the breadcrumbs begin to brown. When the macaroni is done, remove it from the oven. Divide it into 4 (or 6 or 8) individual dishes and top each first with the lobster meat, then the breadcrumbs.

African-Americans. It ended with a pregnant 23-year-old shot dead while sitting on a porch with her boyfriend who was left in critical condition with a bullet wound to his neck. The day before, just a block away, a 19-year-old man was gunned down on the street. This year’s murder toll stands at 485. It will soar past the 500 mark by Dec. 31. There were 90 murders in August, an increase of 36 for the same month in 2015. Police can’t keep up with investigations, which is why 70% of the murders are not solved. A study showed that 90% of the shooting victims are young African-Americans and that 90% of the shootings are by young African-Americans. Most are gang-related. As one police official said, “It is a social problem. You can’t arrest your way out of this problem.” Jesse Jackson and film-maker Spike Lee want a state-of-emergency declared with some type of military intervention. Overlooked in the sprint to the end of the summer season was the passing of one of Cornwall’s most successful business persons who as a young U.S. naval officer during the Second World War invented a contraption that was christened the Dilbert Dunker. It was credited with saving hundreds of downed U.S. fighter pilots. Wilfred (Fred) Kaneb, a Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School graduate, had just graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston (an institution for the brightest of the brightest) when the U.S. Navy, concerned with the drowning toll of pilots forced to ditch at sea, came calling. This was before ejection seats. The freshly-minted Lieutenant Kaneb came up with the simulated aircraft cockpit - christened the Dilbert Dunker - that taught pilots how to survive while submerged under water, sometimes upside down, in their cockpits. At the same time, his brother George, also an MIT grad, was working on the production of artificial rubber for the U.S. government. Although their parents, Thomas, a Lebanese-born immigrant, and Agey, were residents of Cornwall, the mother decided to have George and Fred in Worcester, Mass., where she was from, which made the brothers U.S. citizens. She returned to Cornwall shortly after each birth. At the end of the Second World War, Fred, along with George, returned to Cornwall where they became hugely successful in the business world. (A measure of Fred’s success can be found in the fact The Globe and Mail carried a lengthy story on his passing). He founded Parisien Beverages and Olco Petroleum, which had some 300 gas stations in Ontario and Quebec, and built moulding company Fiberez into a successful company. An interesting tidbit regarding the name Olco is that a legal paperwork typo changed Oilco to Olco. Either nobody noticed the

mistake, or it was decided that it sounded better. Fred was ahead of his time. Back in his soft drink bottling days he had a falling out with his partner. Fred felt that the company should expand into bottled water. His partner scoffed at the idea, saying people would never pay for bottled water. One way Fred got away from the grind of the rugged business world and relax was lending a hand to the care of the 400-tree orchard (apples, pears, peaches and plums) at his Glen Walter spread. Fred Kaneb passed away on Aug. 9 at his home in Glen Walter which overlooks the St. Lawrence River and distant Adirondack Mountains. He was 96. __________________ It was a one-of-a-kind tradition that captured the attention of television viewers each Labour Day weekend. The Jerry Lewis Telethon ran for some 40 years before, as one Muscular Dystrophy Association official put it, “the new realities of television viewing and philanthropic giving” caught up with the 23-hour marathon fund-raiser. For a few of those years Cornwall had a popular live segment on Cogeco. One year it was aired from the Capitol Theatre with Bill LaSalle playing host. The Lewis telethon was, in many ways, corny. And, thanks to remote controls, it was easy to check in on. But it raised a lot of money - an estimated $2.6 billion. The death knell sounded when Lewis “retired” in 2011 in a storm of controversy. The curtain came down on the abbreviated version (two hours) in 2014. Somehow, the ice bucket challenge didn’t have the same effect. Lewis is still with us. He’s 90 and just finished a movie role. He told CBS that he hopes to milk four or five more years out of life. __________________ The sad slaughter in Chicago goes unabated. On the Library Board To the Communities of SD&G, All you need to know is the current Library Board members: Bill McGimpsey, Evonne Delegarde and Nolan Quinn do not listen to their constituents and do not care for their communities. They don’t care about current trends, smaller library branches, rural Ontario, and facts. The Director of Library Services, Karen Franklin, put forth recommendations to close 3 branches without any proper research and consultation and the Board stuck with their decision to keep 3 well-used branches closed within SDG. They sat in their highbacked chairs, and didn’t bat an eye when Tina from Morewood implored them to not close her branch as it is her lifeline. Their stoic expressions never changed as Cal Martin, Brenda Noble, Leo Lehtiniemi and Debbie Courneyea brought forth heartfelt and logical arguments as to why the libraries should

stay open. St.Andrews, Morewood and Dalkeith have dedicated users who haven’t complained that their services have been non-existent in the past 6 years. We are still waiting for an open sign. Yes, an OPEN Sign was never given to our branch. Now we need a big closed sign. Programs were done by our Library Clerk- with a yearly budget of $100. Not the Service Delivery Technician, whose job this is as stated in her job description. Yet, the report to the County council showed the cost for programs at St.Andrews was over $3000. Something is wrong. Who is telling the truth? When you apply for the Library Board, you make a commitment to be an advocate for libraries. The mission statement for SD&G Libraries is to provide an equitable service for everyone, not just for those in larger communities. This action reeks of exclusion and is disgusting. By closing 3 branches, they have taken away

an important service that is well used and loved by 700 users in those communities. The Library Board and staff have left a huge section of SD&G empty of library services. To what end? What is the purpose of closing 3 branches? Is it solely because they are smaller branches? Or, is it to increase hours at other branches? We don’t know, as it was never disclosed and the plans continue to be hidden. But then again, maybe the question isn’t which libraries need more hours, maybe it is time to ask the people when they will most likely use the library. If they are providing a service for people, don’t you think the first step is to find out when the best times are for people to use them? Maybe it is time to use the tools at hand- i.e. the communications and marketing librarian, Susan Wallwork - to get more people to go. Library Board and Staff: stop telling the community to do your job – do it yourself. Is that not

the reason the staff at head office received those raises in February? Because they are supposed to be promoting the libraries, and getting people to use them- not intimidating the people of SDG with “use them or lose them” tactics. It seems to be a simple enough concept but it was never done. A system such as this needs branches to complement each other, not be in competition with each other. When people are hired to manage a system like this and they only want to close branches, well maybe it isn’t the system itself but something else that needs changing. I have to say, I am shocked and disgusted that the Library Board didn’t care or listen to the communities. They held a meeting, to just shut us up, and the Chair ended with “Life isn’t fair”. No, it isn’t fair but it should be just and this wasn’t just. Jeannie Gagnon

Ontario has the highest Hydro rates in North America Ontarian’s will have paid an additional $133 billion more in ‘global adjustment fees’ and, yes, premier Wynne is defending her record and is staying the course to produce more so-called ‘green energy’. The truth is Ontario is over-producing electricity to the point that the IESO predicts between 2015 to 2020 Ontario will have over produced enough excess power to fully supply hydro to Nova Scotia for five years while paying wind & solar farms not to produce power.

Due to Liberal policies there are 571, 000 households eligible to receive the Ontario energy support program which gets added on our hydro bill also the OEB reports 566, 902 homes were in arrears last year and 60, 000 homes got disconnected and yes you can expect a nice rate increase on Nov. 1, 2016 thanks to premier Wynne. Also 38.6% of our bill is a delivery charge, 11.5% of our bill is HST/GST and 3% is our regulatory charge then keep in mind Ontario is the

only province in Canada to have the foregoing charges added to our power bill, which means 53.1% of our bill has nothing to do with how much hydro we use then as mention above our global adjustment fees are added to what we pay to produce hydro and the difference for what it is sold for and you no longer have to ask why we have the highest hydro rates in North America. Letter to editor, The Ontario Auditor General stated, the province is over-paying three and a half times for solar power and over-paying twice as much for wind power as a result, we are over-paying $9.2 billion on 20 year wind and solar power contracts. The Auditor General also stated from 2006 to 2014 we paid $37 billion in ‘global adjustment fees’ to accommodate this failed experiment; but it gets worse from 2014 to 2032

Fixing a golf slice

There are several reasons why you hit this ugly shot, and learning how to improve a golf slice will be painless and easy. You’ll never need to take another golf lesson again to fix this miserable swing fault. Golf Grip Most slicers have a weak golf grip, which 6639746

encourages your clubface to get to impact WIDE OPEN, and here we go...slice away! A simple correction of strengthening your grip, will make it nearly impossible to get to impact open with your clubface. In fact, you might be hitting a HOOK in a matter of just a couple of swings. Now wouldn’t that be pretty cool, if you’ve been spending all your time off the right side of every fairway? Golf Swing Takeaway A slicer of the golf ball usually takes the club away from the body, separating from their core, which is a disconnected golf swing that encourages an “over-the-top” downswing. Try taking the club more straight back, or you might need to feel like you’re taking it back to the inside right away.

Golf Impact Impact is the moment of truth! A slice is caused by either an open clubface at impact, or a clubface that is coming across the ball creating sidespin. Try coming into the ball from the inside and with a slightly shut clubface and you’ll quickly learn how to improve a golf slice in a matter of minutes. Over the Top Downswing One of the most common causes of a golf slice is the “over-the-top” downswing. This is when your shoulders start your downswing first, and they get out and ahead of the lower body, making it impossible to swing down from the inside, which is needed to fix a slice in golf.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Brother and sister Kalska and Cody Aubin are a couple of hardworking athletes from Crysler. Kalska, 15, is a swimmer, and her brother Cody, 13, does track-and-field. Both have won gold in their respective disciplines. This would not have been possible however, without the support of Special Olympics Ontario. Special Olympics Ontario supports athletes with intellectual disabilities so that they can compete in a healthy and supportive environment. According to Stacey McKeown, District Development Officer for Eastern Ontario, she said that Special Olympics Ontario supports 80 athletes in the Cornwall and SD&G area. Stacey, Kalska and Cody met with Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry MP Guy Lauzon on Friday, Sept. 2 to tell him a little bit about how important federal funding is to Special Olympics Ontario. “It is more difficult for them to be themselves

on other local teams,” said Tina, Kalska and Cody’s mother. Kalska and Cody’s involvement with sports has not only helped to keep them fit and healthy, but has also built their confidence. Kalska’s confidence has grown so much, that she was recently able to address players at Tees for Teens, an annual golf tournament in support of teens with special needs. Cody recently won first place in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter Jack Rabbit Provincial Conference for Track and Field. His sister Kalska won gold in the 25 meter back-crawl at the Provincial Competition in May. She won two silvers in the 25 meter freestyle and bronze in the 100 meter freestyle and another bronze in the 50 meter backstroke. Kalska and Cody’s accomplishments could mean that they will qualify for national competitions in their respective sports. Special Olympics Ontario will be having their annual Hill Day on Oct. 25. The Special Olympics is an international organization that supports athletes as they put it, “from cradle to grave”. Next year will be the Special Olympics 50th anniversary.

Because acid soils are more easily removed by alkaline solutions and vice versa, the majority of soaps, detergents, and cleaning products are alkaline (have a pH above 7). There are some alkaline soils and stains, however, and these are most effectively dealt with by acid cleaners. Alkaline soils include lime scale (hardwater deposits), rust stains, tannin, and food stains such as coffee, tea, mustard, and liquour.

Off the Shelf: news from SD&G County Library Susan Wallwork Full disclosure: I don’t like to be told what to read – and I work in libraries! To be totally honest, I don’t like being told what to do period (and I know I’m not alone in this!). But it especially applies to books and reading. There are a lot of books I want to read, only so much time, and there’s a sort of pressure when someone tells you “you have to read this book”. I don’t want to feel obligated in my reading time – obligated to finish or obligated to

like the book. So, I’ve always been a little hesitant with the idea of book clubs – it had sounded like a formal process of telling me what to read. However, I was very surprised to find out that book clubs not only don’t require you to like the book; you don’t even have to finish it! Book clubs are social activities that bring together people of different interests and opinions. Upon further investigation into book clubs, I’ve found that there are even clubs that don’t

require everyone to read the same book – rather, participants can choose their read individually and then meet to discuss whatever it is they read. Even more creative, there are “graffiti in the margins” book clubs. These clubs encourage (yes, I said encourage) participants to draw or write in the book as they read. Whatever they feel as they read, they can illustrate it. When they’re finished the book, they exchange it with other participants and when the book is returned they have a collection of peoples’

ideas and feelings from the book. The “rules” around book clubs are much more loose than I realized and it’s just about finding or creating the club that best suits your personality. The SD&G County Library helps to coordinate a number of different books clubs if you’re looking for one to join – speak to our branch staff to find out more information. And don’t forget, SDG Reads (our community-wide book club) is on right now – read the book Tell by Frances Itani and join the conversation! http://www.sdglibrary.ca/sdg-reads

Collectors to convene in Cornwall for Carnival Glass Convention Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Canadian Carnival Glass Association is holding their 2016 convention, banquet and auction Sept. 15-17 at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre. The auction will be on Saturday, Sept. 17 and will be open to the public. Any collectors or fans of carnival glass are encouraged to come out even if its for no other reason than to see more carnival glass in one place than they could ever imagine. Visitors to the auction will be given the opportunity to join the Canadian Carnival Glass Association at the discount cost of just $10 for the year. Canadian Carnival Glass Association

members will be arriving in Cornwall on Thursday, Sept. 15 and the festivities will begin with games and a pizza party. The next day will see an educational seminar. Even members of the Association who have been collecting carnival glass for ten years are still always learning new things. In addition to the live auction, there will also be a silent auction where items donated to the Canadian Carnival Glass Association will be auctioned off. Both Rurban Brewing and Blooms have both donated to the silent auction. The Canadian Carnival Glass Association is a non-profit entity and all proceeds go back into the organization so that they can continue to hold conventions like the one in Cornwall. Those interested in participating in the auction are asked to call Brian at 613-938-7258.

The Canadian Carnival Glass Association will be holding their convention in Cornwall from September 15-17 (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).

Wow my house is quiet now that my kids are back to school!

Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room. The first kid leans over and asks, “What are you in here for?” The second kid says, “I’m in here to get my tonsils out and I’m a little nervous.” The first kid says, “You’ve got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It’s a breeze!” The second kid then asks, “What are you here for?” The first kid says, “A circumcision.” And the second kid says, “Whoa! I had that done when I was born. I couldn’t walk for a year!”

Randy and Carol...off to another adventure to promote CAPE. Hidden Disabilities ~ Many residents in our community are living with hidden disabilities. Every day can be a huge challenge and if they are out not using a regular cane, white cane, walker, wheelchair or scooter, other members in the community can often be unaware that these residents even have a disability. Some hidden disabilities can include fatigue, weakness, balance, numbness and visual problems and they can be caused by a variety of issues such as an accident, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, heart disease, etc. These symptoms can often come and go and easily be misunderstood by the general public. A person with a hidden disability may be able to walk only a short distance and having an accessible parking permit will allow them to park and enjoy the community like everyone else. So please, try not to judge someone using an accessible parking space … you may not know the whole story! On the other hand, drivers and caregivers must remember that, if the person with a disability is not in the car, they should not be using these parking areas for themselves.

Well..well..looks like Thorston is back in school ...sure looks happy to be there. School started last Tuesday for students in the French Catholic School Board and with the other schools not being far behind, the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) has issued a reminder to drivers to stop for school buses. “Motorists who do not stop for school buses is a problem that we have every year, and this threatens the safety of our children,” the CCPS said in a press release. “We are taking a “zero tolerance level” on the enforcement of this type of violations. School bus operators are also carrying violation forms, that they complete and turned over to police for investigation. This form contains details of the alleged offence such as, license number of the offending vehicle, location, date & time of the offence, description of the driver. “
