UCDSB report calls for mass school closures Nick Seebruch
CORNWALL, Ontario - The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has announced that it is considering a plan which would see 16 public elementary and high schools closed by the end of the year. “There is a challenge currently facing the board that needs to be addressed,” reads a report released by the school board. “We have too much surplus classroom space in our schools. This is a challenge because the funding school boards receive from the Ontario Ministry of Education to operate and maintain schools is increasingly based upon the amount of physical school space required given student enrollments.” The UCDSB claims that it has 10, 000 surplus spaces in its schools and the closures must be considered to deal with corresponding budget shortfalls. “The Upper Canada District School Board is compelled to address the realities of maintaining its aging inventory of school buildings,

The 25th and final Williamsburg Fall Festival For 25 years the Williamsburg Community Association has held the Fall Festival, but this year was the last. “We don’t have enough volunteers to keep our committee going,” said committee President David Lapier. “Its hard after 25 years also to keep it fresh. We want to keep
it fun but it is getting harder to do that and keep it cheap. We were thinking of having fireworks this year but that would be a few thousand dollars. We always have had fantastic volunteers since the beginning, but the ones who started with us are in their 60s and 70s now.” The festival ran from Friday Sept. 23 to Saturday, Sept. 24.

Protesting male infant circumcision Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media MORRISBURG, Ontario - A busy Morrisburg intersection was the site chosen by a small group of protesters who call themselves Intactivists. On Sunday, Sept. 25 the group of 7 protesters gathered to peacefully bring awareness to the issue of male infant circumcision or mutilation as they deem it. The group would like to see a ban on the practice. The Intactivists use the word “Cut” when referring to the procedure of circumcision. Organizer Nicole Truesdell explained the choice of location when she said, “Morrisburg is a high cut area.” Truesdell also said she would like to see a complete ban on practice of circumcising infant males. Until a ban happens she said, “I want
people to make an informed choice.” The information she wants highlighted is the risks involved. The common complications associated with circumcision are bleeding and infection. Truesdell said, “The possibility of hemorrhaging is 35 percent risk and the chance of developing Meatitis, (an inflammation of the urethral opening) is eight to 20 percent.” Joey Moore another of the Intactivists sees the problem also as misinformation. He said circumcision is being sold as a disease preventative choice. He feels doctors are persuading young, new parents to cut their children by using fear tactics. He said, “They are constantly selling the boogeyman.” Moore said he doesn’t understand why it is only females who can claim to be traumatized by their circumcision. All forms of circumcision need to stop. He said, “It is hypocritical to be against one but promoting another.”

Bentley Boardwalk falls through Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
LONG SAULT, Ontario - The Bentley Boardwalk condo development at the site of the Long Sault Marina will not be happening. Developer JC Godard has said that he will cut his losses from the site. His decision to end the project, according to him, is because of the lack of sales for the proposed condos. “There wasn’t a market for this project,” Godard said. Bentley’s Boadwalk would have included 72
condos, a boat club and a bar-and-grill. “I’m sorry to see JC pull out of the development,” said South Stormont Township Mayor Jim Bancroft. “I’m still of the opinion that the type of housing offered by these condominiums still has a place in our community.” Improvement of the Long Sault Marina property was identified in the Township Community Improvement Plan and the Waterfront Development Plan. Mayor Bancroft said that he was not aware of any other developer currently interested in the site.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City revealed on Thursday that it wanted to upgrade the infrastructure around the new Bridgewood Elementary School to make the area safer for pedestrians. “To assist with pedestrian access to the school site, a new sidewalk is being constructed on the south side of Marleau Avenue,” the City said in a statement. “The City is overseeing construction of the sidewalk. It was originally scheduled to be completed by September 6th and the City apologizes for this inconvenience. Construction is underway and the sidewalk is expected to be completed by Sept. 23.” The City also explained that at this time there were no plans to add crossing guards at the Marleau/ Nick Kaneb intersection. “There is a pedestrian signal in place at this location,” the City’s statement reads. “In addition, there is a school crossing guard in place at the intersection of Holy Cross Boulevard and Nick Kaneb Drive. City staff is monitoring the traffic in this corridor and will make adjustments if necessary.” The City has also be installed a pedestrian signal at the Marleau and Lochiel intersection.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A plaque at Pointe Maligne was vandalized Thursday night. The police have been informed and the Heart of the City is asking people for help in identifying the vandals. The plaque was a part of the Historical Walking Tour plaque series that was installed in the Downtown and Le Village areas earlier this summer. The tour was a joint project between the City of Cornwall, Heart of the City and the Downtown and Le Village BIAs. Centretown Coordinator Todd Lihou made it clear also, that this kind of vandalism would not be tolerated. “This is an unfortunate act. So many people, including countless volunteers and stakeholders, worked hard to make this project a reality,” said Lihou. “We hope that by providing this information to the public the police will be able to find out who did this, so that this won’t happen again.” The vandals spray painted over the plaque, as well as the nearby Legion Park building. The plaques have a coating over there surface that prevents things like spray paint from adhering to them. Before and after photos of the vandalism have been included above. Anyone who recognizes the vandalism, or who might be able to identify the vandal, is asked to called the C o r n w a l l C o m m u n i t y Po l i c e a t 613-933-5000.

Get ready for a stress free Thanksgiving The key to a stress-less Thanksgiving is being prepared. That sounds easier said than done for most of us. You want to start with the small stuff like pies that can be made in advance and frozen (to be cooked on the day you need to serve them). Before you start power baking, you want to make a Master Plan List, this includes such key information as who is coming, are they bringing anything, what is to be served and a what time. Don’t be afraid to ask some of your guests to bring something specific, this is very common nowadays. With the above information you want to gather your recipes and start ingredient
about serving sliced turkey breast (avoid fighting for the white meat). This part of the turkey can be cooked the day before, to ensure the meat does not dry-out, cover the sliced turkey in gravy. Then all you need to do is heat and serve. Mashed potatoes, yams and Brussels sprouts can also be done the day before. You want to have a fun and entertaining Thanksgiving and not to be stuck in the kitchen, take time to enjoy your company and have a good time. Now, where will everyone sit at the dinner? Do you have enough chairs and table space? You will also want to look at your dishes, do you bring out the family heirloom set for Thanksgiving? Look at it, does it need to be re-washed or dusted? Or in a worse case scenario, do you need to go buy more dishes? The Bath Solutions Cornwall story began with a great installation from a Bath Solutions franchise in 2006. Rick Parks had a tub liner and acrylic walls installed in a tenant unit, expanding the project to three more tenant units. The products were amazing – installation fast and accurate – it holds up to tenant use – when cleaned, it shines like crazy! In 2012, Rick and Abbie Parks started to look for Bath Solutions again, for more acrylic, to renovate more bathrooms in rental units. After research, they discovered that there was no franchise owner in their area – and the story of the Bath Solutions in Cornwall today, began. Bath Solutions uses a two-step process. First a customer schedules a free estimate with Abbie. During the visit, the customer is welcome to share what they like about their bathroom already, what they would like to change, and anything they would like to cover or move. Abbie needs to measure the dimensions of everything being covered or replaced. The customer will select a shower base or tub, what type of covering for the walls (tile and acrylic choices are plentiful) and what type of plumbing they would like to have. Abbie is able to generate a quote for the job in the same session. In the second step, when the customer is ready to move ahead, the materials are ordered. The customer is called the week before the last materials arrive in the shop to schedule installation by the Bath Solutions installers.
and rehabilitation they need. Please join us for the awareness walk and make a difference in your community. Tune-in to “Mental Health Matters” Season 3 on COGECOTV starting Tuesday Oct. 4, 30 p.m. -cable 11 and now in HD on 700.
Comfort, Luxury and Safety With our Price Saver. Includes Mirolin rectangular shower base with new chrome drain, smooth white walls, Moen faucet. Fully installed and Guaranteed.
Bath Solutions can cover your old tub and tile with acrylic. They can replace any and all plumbing fixtures in the bathroom where they are or move them. Their most popular renovation is to refresh the shower enclosure or turn a tub into a shower only. The first of many years in bed with the Cornwall Lions Club Alycia Douglass, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Tangible excitement filled downtown Cornwall this Saturday, Sept. 24, as local schools and businesses got into bed for the Lions Club of Cornwall’s first annual Bed Race. The competition featured 21 local business and 3 community high schools. Participants rolled up in decorated beds and strapped in for a wild ride. Teams were composed of runners, who propelled the bed; as well as one rider, whose job was to stay firmly seated in the bed at all times. The hospital had organized a similar event in previous years, but it was Kibby Lutz who
encouraged the Lions Club of Cornwall to follow suit. “I thought it would be something the city could get on board with,” said Lutz. “And also a great way to have fun while encouraging donations.” The speed victors in the business class were Blue Beacon Truck Wash, with La Citadelle winning the award for fastest youth class. Amédé Fontaine, who was one of the team’s six runners explained the strategy behind their triumphant victory. “We had speed on one side of the bed, and strength on the other,” said Fontaine. Having formed their team a mere two days prior to the event, the guys were eager to serve a
worthy cause. “We were approached by our coaches, and they asked us to get a team together to come compete...and that’s what we did,” said Fontaine. Organizer, Kibby Lutz says that community involvement is key when it comes to planning an event like this. “All involved, including the City of Cornwall and local businesses have been amazing in the organization,” said Lutz. “It’s looking like this is going to be the first of many.” After the races there was a dance at 7 p.m. at the Civic Complex to help raise funds for the Lions Club of Cornwall, with all proceeds going towards serving the community.
Lions Club members race down Pitt Street in an ultimate challenge of speed and strength (Alycia Douglass/ Seaway News).

OPINION
Eureka moment for Kathleen For Preem Kathy, it seems to have been one of those slap-on-the-forehead, knock-me-overwith-a-feather moments. Holy mackerel Andy, two weeks ago, perhaps while sitting at the breakfast table with Jane and reading the morning papers, she suddenly realized the unwashed are upset with hydro bills that are not just outrunning inflation, but lapping annual cost of living hikes. It seems Jane, who takes care of the household bills, didn’t mention it. And so, the preem was in a fog when it came to a 400% spike in Hydro One bills since Dalton and the Fiberals wrestled power from the Conservatives and the gouge those increases have put in Joe Average’s pocket book. Stay tuned folks. More to come with cap and trade. Hey, buying a riding with a gas plant scandal doesn’t come cheap. “I recognize that there are challenges,” the preem said. Not sure if she was referring to the folks strapped with the skyrocketing bills or her government’s attempt to find new ways to pick our pockets. Fear not. The now clued in, and concerned, preem will be taking action. She said dealing with high (hydro) prices has become an “urgent” issue for her government and the energy minister has been told to take action, which means rolling out the household energy conservation bus. No doubt, Hydro One will be mailing out a list of tips (for the hundredth time) on how to save energy and chop huge increases to big increases. You know, the usual drill - a few more inches of insulation in the attic, chalk around windows and vents, turn down the thermostat at night to 5 C, seniors should hang out at the local mall during the day-time, don’t run the dishwasher more than three times a year, keep showers to under two minutes every two days, do the laundry at 2 a.m., put a windmill in the
backyard, or get a second job. (We could add, or move to Cornwall which uses cheaper power from Quebec). Collectively, all of this just might reduce that pocketbook gouge to a dent. But be careful. Last year Hydro One jacked up rates to help pay for a decline in power consumption. SPORTS STUFF How many times did Royals fans see this play out: Hawerchuk scores the game winner in the final minutes of a game. Fast forward to Friday night in Kingston with the Frontenacs host to Barrie Colts in an Ontario Hockey League season opener. Ben Hawerchuk, second-year left winger and son of coach Dale Hawerchuk, scored at 14:02 of the third period to give Barrie a 2-1 victory. He assisted on Barrie’s other goal. ... Never understood why it takes four pitches to intentionally walk a batter. Don Drysdale, the late, great LA Dodgers hurler had a simple solution. After manager Walter Alston told Drysdale to walk the next batter, Drysdale hit the batter with his first pitch. His reasoning: Why waste four throws. TRIVIA ANSWER Olive Diefenbaker, who laid the cornerstone for First Baptist Church, York and Third streets in November 1960, was wife of Prime Minister John Diefenbaker. The church was built on the former McGill Chair Factory property. TRIVIA In 1907 a Sherbrooke, Que. businessman, Seth Nutter, launched St. Lawrence Breweries in Cornwall. The plant had the capacity to brew 8,000 gallons of “Cornwall Ale” daily that was sold coast-to-coast. However, in 1920 the plant closed. It re-opened in 1939 as a cheese storage facility. In its last years it became an ice plant. The property is now a vacant lot. Where is it? FILLING UP THE FRONT ROW There was pre-debate chatter that Gennifer Flowers, who had a liaison (aka extra-marital affair) with Bill Clinton years ago, showing up in the front row. Heck, if all the women Willy had played around with while married showed up,
they could fill the front row. ... And when it comes to health concerns, when did The Donald make a full recovery from the physical ailment that made him ineligible for the military draft (and going to Vietnam) not once, but four times. ... The consolation prize in the November election is the fact that the vice-presidential candidates score much higher than the prez contenders when it comes to honesty and trustworthiness. ‘bedroom’ community. It’s population has boomed to 600,000. IN THE REAR-VIEW (Circa 1955) - The first visible sign of the pending mega St. Lawrence Power Project was the destruction of a magnificent 10-room, three-storey farm house on the West Front in March 1955. The Allan Robertson home, with its large verandah and rolling lawn, had been in the family for 150 years. It was being demolished to prepare the site for the huge dyke that holds back Lake St. Lawrence. The home, on 85 acres, was the first of many stately homes that would be destroyed in the name of progress. - A Toronto developer announced plans to build a luxury apartment complex on a vacant piece of property at Third and Cumberland streets. The first of three buildings would be finished by the end of the year.
- New Roman Catholic church was under construction at Thirteenth and Lisieux. - City council approved purchase of the Louis Horovitz property on the southeast corner of Fifth and Sydney streets for expansion of Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School for $62,500. - J. E. Anderson Motors moved to its new building at 1200 Second St. W. from Pitt Street. It was also the new Canadian FINA gas dealer. - Police Chief Allan Clarke warned that cyclists caught riding on the bicycle path that cut through Central Park would be issued tickets. A bylaw banned the riding of bikes through the park. ONE FINAL THING Monday night Belleville council approved a deal with the Ottawa Senators that will bring the NHL team’s American Hockey League franchise, currently based in Binghampton, N.Y., to the city for the 2017-18 season. Among other things, the city is required to spend $20 million of taxpayers’ money to upgrade that includes adding 1,200 more seats that will increase seating capacity to 4,400 in the Yardmen arena. The AHL team will fill the void created when the major junior Bulls moved to Hamilton because the arena didn’t have enough seats. The mayor of Belleville called the AHL deal a “great day” for Belleville. Humm. Does some of this sound familiar?

Canada’s central bank governor Stephen Poloz has been frank, absolutely clear and forthright about the current state of the economy. The country’s economy is looking bleak and is likely to get bleaker before it gets better. “The data are volatile,” Poloz told reporters in Ottawa following a speech to the Canadian Economic Association. Export activity and business investment is gradually slipping and the job creation is not very robust. Oil prices are still low but there are indications they may start rising soon.
Alberta, once the richest province in the country, has been hurt by falling oil prices and wildfires. Adding to all the troubles are threats Canadian household debts which are rising at an alarming rate. The federal government’s promised fiscal surge in stimulus spending is slow in getting off the ground. The housing market is also slowing down and the Bank of Canada has left the interest rate at 0.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the long honeymoon with the Liberal government, headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is coming to an end.
Trudeau, who is fond of talking about sunny days, has many hard choices facing his government. These range from electoral reform to oil pipelines and a new national strategy on climate change. The Trudeau Liberals made numerous promises during the election campaign to defeat Conservatives headed by Stephen Harper. Many of the election promises will not be fulfilled. The government will soon have to make some hard changes that will not please everyone. Canada lost 31,000 jobs in July while job

creation fell to its lowest level since the recession in 2008-09. All this is happening when the Liberal government is drawing a lot of ire from Canadian taxpayers. What happened to the promises of transparency and fairness? Many of the senior Liberal ministers and also top advisers to the prime minister are rightly facing criticisms about their expense claims. Is the Trudeau-mania losing its luster? Well, the fall is here and our legislators are back to real business in the House of Commons. The sunny days will soon give away to cloudiness.
Jim McDonell on proposed school closures closure of Kemptville College, the only agricultural school in Eastern Ontario, and now we see massive closures of Eastern Ontario rural schools. Under the slated closure proposal, there would be no high school between Cornwall and Vankleek Hill and between Cornwall and Prescott. Parents and residents already do their part through their property taxes and their tireless involvement in the school boards’ operation. It is unconscionable to
expect them to put up with closures and the inconvenience and crowding they are likely to present to parents and students. The Ministry of Education must work with Upper Canada District School Board and all other school boards representing rural areas in order to create a funding formula that would preserve local students’ access to primary and secondary education close to home.”
The community immediately opposed the planned closures. “I am disappointed that the school board would shock the community and me with such a sudden and farreaching proposal” MPP McDonell stated. “Any consultation with parents, teachers, students and members of the community would have shown the report’s recommendations to be absolutely opposed to the interests of our region.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is now in possession of a new outdoor gym and as Rotary Club member Pat Clarke said, “there is now no excuse not to be fit in Cornwall.” The outdoor gym was a joint project created through the collaboration of both the Rotary Club of Cornwall and the Rotary Cornwall Sunrise Club. The total value of the project is $100, 000. The outdoor gym, located in Lamoureux Park near the Cornwall Community Museum, contains equipment to workout almost every muscle of the body.“A lot of contractors were involved with this project,” said Jeremiah Point, the past President of the Rotary Club of Cornwall. “We have a great community and this is another great example of that.” In total, there were twelve suppliers and contractors who took part in the building of the out-
door gym. The gym was partially funded by donations. Donors could have their names engraved on a brick in the outdoor gym. Donations can range from $250 to $2, 500. For $250, the donor can get a 13x6.5” brick with twoto-three lines engraved on it. The larger bricks can have company logos included on them. In a press release on the handover of the outdoor gym to the City, the Rotary Club noted that the project was not currently fully funded and that the Rotary Club was still seeking donations for the gym. Rotary Club member Pat Clarke noted that the outdoor gym was right near an apple tree in the park for anyone who was seeking a snack while they worked out. He also encouraged everyone to use the near by water fountain and re-usable water bottles rather than plastic water bottles which will only end up in landfills.
AVONMORE, Ontario - The Avonmore Firefighter’s Association will be hosting the Second Annual Chenier Mechanical Avonmore Firefighter Run on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016. The course received many compliments from runners for being flat and picturesque with multiple water stations along the route. This year’s run will once again feature a live DJ, Chip Timing, Free Breakfast, and a Free Technical Shirt for early registrants. An exciting new element this year is that every participant will receive a medal upon race completion! During the event, members of the Avonmore Firefighter’s Association will be on hand to provide course direction and encouragement along the race routes. There will be a 5km and a 10km Run/Walk with both races beginning at North Stormont Place in Avonmore at 9 a.m. The cost is $30 and $35 for the 5km and 10km respectively with proceeds going to the Avonmore Firefighter’s

Cut: Crown mouldings have to be cut at a 45° angle if they are to fit properly in right angle joints. To avoid costly mistakes, do a trial run on the portion of moulding you bought for this purpose. Pressing firmly, stabilize the crown moulding on the template and cut it with the mitre saw. After placing the test mouldings in a corner and making sure the joint is to your satisfaction, draw some reference points with your pencil. Glue: Once all your final mouldings are cut, ask a willing volunteer to help you install them. Start by spreading wood glue over the entire surface of the back of the crown moulding before applying it to the wall. Then hammer in the finishing nails approximately every 30 cm. After joining the mouldings in the right angles, wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Lastly, before painting your crown mouldings, fill the nail holes and cracks with the latex caulking and allow to dry.

He has a background in business, having studied Business Administration at St. Lawrence College and learned his trade while working for a tile restoration company in Ottawa. He has roughly five years of on-the-job experience. Corey’s advice to clients is to always consider restoration of tiles before replacement. He says that the most common mistake he Smith sees on the job are people throwing away perfectly good tiles when they could be restored for a fraction of the price of replacement. Corey is not the first member of his family to build a business in the Cornwall community. h me renovation Buying A New Roof? Consider this…
Falls on construction projects continue to be the main cause of workplace injuries in Ontario. Roofing is dangerous work; even a small slip can have serious consequences. So it’s very important to ask about health and safety precautions and certifications before you hire a roofing contractor. DiD you know? • By law, workers must be trained in fall protection and must be protected at all times whenworking above 3 metres (10 feet). • Employers must train workers in workplace safety hazards. Before signing a contract ask the contractor aBout worker safety • Is the contractor registered with the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board? (WSIB administerscompensation and no-fault insurance.) • Have the workers been trained to work safely? • Will workers be wearing fall protection equipment? If the answer to any of these questions is no, look for another contractor. home renovation proBlems are consistently among the top consumer complaints in ontario Take the following precautions before you sign a contract: • Get written estimates for the work. Generally, three estimates will provide enough information, but get as many as you need to feel comfortable making a final decision. • Ensure the estimates contain everything you ask for. Assume anything not listed is not includedin the price. • Before signing the contract, ensure you fully understand what you are signing for and what is included. • Ensure the contract covers all discussed terms. This should include a breakdown of all costs and applicable taxes. A “hand shake” promise may not be enforceable if it’s not included in awritten contract. • Avoid contractors who offer tax-free deals. This can be a sign that a business is avoiding important consumer and worker protection responsibilities as well. A taxfree deal without areceipt provides no legal recourse over the goods and services purchased, and can result in you having to pay twice if the job is left unfinished or done poorly.

Is your wood floor scratched? Is one of your favourite pieces of furniture stained? Fortunately, you can make them look like new (or at least limit the damage) by trying these tips. Scratches: If your beautiful hardwood floor is looking ruined by a scratch, gather up the following items: baking soda, a small brush and some floor varnish. First, clean the scratch with water and baking soda, then rinse and let dry. Then apply three coats of varnish to fill the scratch. White heat stains: A hot dish was put directly on your varnished wood table and now it’s “decorated” with an ugly white stain? Don’t panic. Try to get rid of it by rubbing it with one of the following mixtures: • One part turpentine to two parts linseed oil • A paste made of olive oil and salt • A paste made of olive oil and wood ash Ink stains: A bottle of ink was spilled or a pen leaked on a favourite piece of wood furniture? Move
Use a fresh lemon to get rid of ink stains on a wood floor or piece of furniture.
quickly! Cut a lemon in half, rub the stain with it and then wipe the wood with a damp cloth. Alternatively, spray the ink stain with hair spray and blot it with a paper towel. If stains and scratches are deep and inde lible, the item will have to be sanded completely and a new coat of varnish applied. For the best results, call on the services of a professional.

Make your own ice pack
For a temporary fix, sprinkle talcum powder over the noisy area and sweep it into the cracks. Be sure to remove any traces of powder if you’re ever going to refinish the floor.
A little silicone spray lubricant (sold at hardware stores) will grease the skids. Spray it onto a rag, then wipe along the tracks, whether they’re metal, wood, or plastic.
Rub the spot with white toothpaste and a dry cloth or with an eraser. Or spray WD-40 on a towel and rub lightly, making sure to degrease the area afterward with liquid dishwashing soap and water.
Peeling wallpaper
Hard-to-remove decals
You can make your own ice packs by filling a zip lock baggie with dish soap, then placing into a second baggie to seal in leaks. The soap won’t freeze totally, allowing you to mold it to your body. Bonus, you can get a few packs out of a $1 bottle of soap from the dollar store.
With a knife, smear wallpaper paste onto a piece of writing paper. Rub the paper against the underside of the peeling section. Press the wallpaper against the wall. Slide the writing paper out and smooth away bubbles with a clean cloth.
Spray the decals and the surrounding areas with WD-40, lifting the edges to get underneath, if possible. Let sit, then gently scrape away the decal with the edge of a credit card. Degrease the tub with liquid dishwashing soap.

Remove grease stains from clothes
How to clean your shower head
Chalk will remove grease stains from clothes. Simply rub the stain with chalk, then toss in the wash as normal.
To get the built up residue off of your shower head, tie a baggy of vinegar around a shower head. Leave it there over night, and it will clean everything off with no work!
Combine equal amounts of cream of tartar and baking soda with enough lemon juice to make a paste. Rub the mixture into the stain with your fingers or a soft cloth. Let sit for a half hour, then rinse well with water.
How to clean your chrome faucets To get the water spots off of chrome faucets, after cleaning rub them with a piece of waxed paper- it will keep the water spots and fingerprints from sticking to the clean metal.

BEAT THE BLIZZARD EVENT
h me renovation Increasing safety, luxury and confidence in the bathroom If a wheelchair or walker are an everyday concern, an easier opening to the shower is needed. A tub might be able to be cut into. A pattern is cut out of the side of the tub, the wall is built up inside and a new step or door opening is added to the cut out space. There are wheelchair accessible showers that allow rolling safety equipment to roll right into the shower with no barrier or very little. To relieve aches and pains, some people consider walk-in tubs. There are walk-in tubs that have a regular sized door opening or even an extra wide outward opening door, this is easier to get into, from a wheelchair or walker. Sometimes the use of a handheld shower head can allow the hot water to work on these same aches and pains. Bathroom safety solutions have become very popular and more accessible than ever before.
Homemade air freshner • Soak orange peels in vinegar for two weeks in a sealed mason jar then pour the vinegar into a spray bottle. There are safety concerns that suddenly appear or increase for people over time. In order to decrease the chances of slipping in a shower or tub, anti-slip textures are now on the floors of most tubs and shower bases. Sometimes losing balance, slipping or a weak knee/leg/hip are the concerns. There are acrylic and metal safety bars, white or popular metal colors, there are a range of sizes from 12” up to 36” safety bars that go around the shower. These can add confidence to shower and bath time. The addition of a safety seat, an integrated seat or bench can be a back-up plan for a person to add comfort to the shower. There are seats that are free standing, some anchored into the wall while still flipping up or others included in the shape of the shower base.

Bamboo blinds, solar blinds, shutters: how are you going to dress up your windows this year?
installed
Natural materials Raw fabrics, such as silk or linen, give a Zen appearance to modern decors but are very high maintenance. In addition to wrinkling easily, these delicate materials usually have to be dry-cleaned. Similarly, advocates of ecoresponsible decorating prefer bamboo, a plant that grows in abundance and at lightning speed. In the form of roll-up or slat blinds, bamboo immediately adds an exotic and cozy look to your home. As a bonus, it’s a real breeze to maintain. Shutters Shutters continue to be popular and are suitable for any type of decor: rustic, sophisticated, contemporary, etc. They are the ideal solution for anyone seeking privacy without sacrificing natural lighting and being able to see outside. This year, several international de si gners have been inspired by Eastern or Mediterranean styles, adding beautiful perforated (or openwork) shutters to their collections. Solar shades Solar shades are very fashionable at the moment and come in a variety of models to enhance any type of style. In addition to protecting your furniture and carpets from UV rays — and prying eyes — these shades look great when combined with decorative curtains.

Bereaved Families annual gala raises funds for children’s programs CORNWALL, Ontario – It was far from a solemn evening at the annual Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO) Gala Dinner held at the Best Western Parkway Inn on Saturday, September 17, as the community gathered to raise funds for one of the organization’s most prominent programs. In its 16th year, the gala which began in 2001, is a dedicated fundraiser that supports the BFO’s Children and Youth Bereavement Services within Cornwall and area.
Event organizer and past BFO president, Rachelle Lamond, explained “Children need a lot of support when they lose someone they love, so the funds raised at this gala go directly towards programs that help them cope and to bring in new programs for them, as well.” Those in attendance ranged from event sponsors, to prominent community members, to those who have been affected by the loss of a loved one and used the services provided by BFO. “A lot of people that come out are members or people who have gotten help from Bereaved Families when they lost somebody, so we all really work together to make it a
good night,” said Lamond. Add a few drops of white vinegar to your mopping bucket to remove soap traces. If the floor is linoleum or vinyl, add a few drops of baby oil to bring a soft gleam to the surface - a mere 1 or 2 capfuls at most, or you’ll turn the floor into a skating rink.

Special thanks to Father Claude Hallé for the celebration of the Funeral Mass and to Father Claude Thibeault of Ste. Thérèse-de-Lisieux Parish for co-celebration of the Eucharist. A very special thank you to the staff of Riverdale Terrace Retirement Home for the loving care given to Mom, as well as the caring doctors and nurses of the Cornwall Community Hospital. Words are inadequate to express the personal and professional touch of Lahaie & Sullivan.

FALL CLEANING ~ Mulching and composting are great ways to get rid of your leaves this fall. Mulch leaves with a lawn mower to reduce the bulk of the pile, then add the mulch in small amounts to your compost. It will break down along with your kitchen scraps to make an eco-friendly fertilizer. Keeping in Touch … One student fell into a cycle of classes, studying, working and sleeping. He didn’t realize how long he had neglected writing home until he received the following note: Dear Son, Your mother and I enjoyed your last letter. Of course, we were much younger then and more impressionable. Love, Dad. Flu season: Don’t forget to cough into your sleeve, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap or hand sanitizer. If you’re sick, stay home!

Pet Tip of the Week: People food is dangerous for your pet. Rich foods can upset their delicate stomachs and poultry bones can splinter and cause serious illness. The best thing to feed your pet is a specially formulated cat or dog food. Your veterinarian can help you select the one best suited for your companion animal. So this Thanksgiving, make sure to keep the turkey and trimmings out of Fido’s reach.

FREE KITTENS!
A pretty little girl named Suzy was standing on the sidewalk in front of her home. Next to her was a basket containing a number of tiny creatures; in her hand was a sign announcing FREE KITTENS. Suddenly a line of big black cars pulled up beside her. Out of the lead car stepped a tall, grinning man. “Hi there, little girl. I’m Donald Trump. What do you have in the basket?” he asked. “Kittens,” little Suzy said. “How old are they?” asked Trump. Suzy replied, “They’re so young, their eyes aren’t even open yet.” “And what kind of kittens are they?” “Republicans,” answered Suzy with a smile. Trump was delighted. As soon as he returned to his car, he called his PR chief and told him about the little girl and the kittens. Recognizing the perfect photo op, the two men agreed that Trump should return the next day; and in front of the assembled media, have the girl talk about her discerning kittens. So, the next day Suzy was again standing on the sidewalk with her basket of “FREE KITTENS,” when another motorcade pulled up, this time followed by vans from ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and CNN. Cameras and audio equipment were quickly set up, then Trump got out of his limo and walked over to little Suzy. “Hello, again,” he said, “I’d love it if you would tell all my friends out there what kind of kittens you’re giving away.” “Yes, sir,” Suzy said. “They’re Democrats.” Taken by surprise, Trump stammered, “But...but...yesterday, you told me they were REPUBLICANS.” Little Suzy smiled and said, “I know. But today, they have their eyes open.”

Thank you for being a local hero in our SDG community! It’s time to start thinking about car care for the winter season coming up. Check your car manual and switch to the lowest recommended winter oil grade for your model. Synthetic motor oil (though more expensive) can be used year round and resists cold-temperature sludge.
