Kraft Heinz Peanut Butter Challenge for Agapè

INGLESIDE, Ontario - Kraft Heinz Canada and its Ingleside employees donated 215 jars of peanut butter to the Agapè Centre. Every year, the food production company’s local site undertakes four events to help out the needy. “It could be volunteering in a food bank, which a team did earlier this year at the Agapè Center, or challenges that provide an opportunity for each employee to participate,” said Jackie Poulin, HR Manager at the Kraft Heinz Ingleside location. Since it’s the most requested item at the local food bank and synonymous with the Kraft Heinz brand, peanut butter was the perfect fit for this food drive. “We are so full of gratitude for this donation,” said Johanne Gauthier, Operations Manager at the Agapè Centre. “This is a huge boost. It’s a food item we don’t often receive in large quanti-

ties because it’s so expensive.” The added bonus: any employee, temporary services employee or contractor could purchase the product in the company store, and the Ingleside site matched their purchases. “We had excellent participation in this challenge,” said Poulin. There were 36 cases – or 430 jars – were collected in total, which was divided equally between the Agapè Center in Cornwall and the South Dundas Food Bank. “The jars went straight from the truck and onto our shelves, where we know it won’t stay long” said Gauthier. The crew at Kraft isn’t wasting any time on their next philanthropic project. “Our next challenge is being organized and Kraft workers loading up their delivery for the Agapè Centre. will be announced mid-October,” said Poulin. The Agapè Centre reported a 26% increase bank this past year. In a given month, 466 fam- had good food. The centre’s food bank gives in the number of households who used the food ilies need a little extra help to make sure they away $15,000 worth of food every month.

City agrees to provide dispatch services for neighbouring Townships

OSCPA raises funds and awareness at annual yard sale

The Worlds First Li-Ion Hearing Aids Never Change A Battery Again

Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Animal lovers had a unique opportunity to pick up, or drop off items for sale Sunday at the SDG OSCPA’s annual yardsale. The yard sale returned this year, for another chance to raise money for the OSCPA animal shelter on Boundary road. Organizers estimate nearly 150 people made it out today to show their support for the pets and volunteers who make the animal shelter possible. With donated items generously provided by community members, the OSPCA hosted their yard sale in the backyard area of the facility on Boundary road. Visitors could drop by and peruse the many items for sale, and enjoy a hot dog courtesy of the volunteers. “Today went really well, considering it was improtu,” said longtime volunteer Stephanie Carpenter. “It was very well supported as always, people have been very generous with the shelter.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - “Friends” and “Family” were the words which echoed in the Army, Navy, Air Force Club (A.N.A.F. The evening reunion also included a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in which the proceeds were donated to the United Way as well as a silent auction. Richard Filion, a foreman at Domtar was on stage providing musical entertainment. With about 270 guests attending the event organizer Debbie Fraser declared the evening a success. She said, It is nice to be together and having a happy time. Good food, good company and drinks. People arriving at the reunion were greeted by Brian Hollingsworth, a 28 year Domtar employee and Joe Foubert, President of the A.N.A.F. Club and former Domtar employee. Foubert started working at Domtar when he

Guy Briere:

An entrepreneur and a strong heart of the Cornwall community

10 - Thursday, October 6, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

CORNWALL, Ontario - One of the strong hearts of the Cornwall community has passed away. Guy Briere passed away on Monday, September 26 at the age of 70 of lung cancer. His children, Nick and Lindsay, remember him as a fun and loving father. “Anyone who knew him, knew he never had a problem being social,” said his daughter Lindsay. “He was the type of fella that when he walked into a room and five minutes later, everyone knew him,” said his wife Sue. “I have about five or six friends who thought of him as a second father, and that just tells you a lot about the kind of guy he was,” said Nick. Paige was one such case, who became an adopted daughter to Guy. Wherever he went, Guy connected with people, a trait that suited his love of travel. He had been to every continent except

Antartica, but had a special love for Barbados, visiting the island over 60 times. “People who hadn’t even met him in Barbados, knew the legend,” said Nick. Guy began to pursue his love of travel while working for his father’s company here in Cornwall, Briere-Gosling Travel. After five years in the Canadian Air Force, he worked at the company started by his father for 28 years. Always the hard worker and entrepreneur, he soon moved on to other ventures. Some might remember Par-T Golf, and indoor golf range started by Guy on Balmoral Avenue here in Cornwall. Later he would pursue his interest and love of food by working for Rockport Boat Lines and managing their restaurant. When the opportunity came, he and his business partner, Julie Amyot, formed B & A Food Services and managed the restaurants at Upper Canada Village, including the Harvest Barn and Willard’s Hotel. They also provided the food services for other events taking place at Uper Canada Village such as Pumpkinferno.

Guy Briere Guy was a man who enjoyed the outdoors. In his spare time, he would often enjoying fishing trips to his cabin near Fort-Coulogne, Quebec, where he could escape civilization. In honour of his love of travel and his love of Barbados, his family will be spreading some of his ashes there. “We have a lot of friends in Barbados who introduced us to so many people,” said his wife Sue. “Everywhere he went though, he had friends galore.” Over a hundred people expressed their sadness at his passing on social media.

“My condolences for your loss Lindsay, your father was a fun person to be around and had a joy of life that he would spread to everyone around him,” wrote one James Matheson. His daughter Lindsay said that the support her father was being shown was a testament to the type of man he was. “He didn’t judge people, and treated them all equally,” she said. “He didn’t come from much an worked his way up.”“He was a hard worker and had a big heart,” Sue added. A memorial services was held for Guy Briere on Wednesday, October 5.

Students want community’s help to save their school Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Grade 10 Char-Lan student Robert Moffat showing school pride.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Just days after the Upper Canada District School Board announced that it planned to close 12 schools by the end of June 2017, groups are already forming to save these rural community centres. Char-Lan District High School is one such school that the UCDSB has identified for closure. The Save Char-Lan Facebook page has been formed by students at the school to raise awareness and allow people to organize their opposition to the UCDSB’s decision. The page currently has nearly 1, 300 likes. Group organizer and member of Char-Lan Student Council Robert Moffat said

that it is important to create a forum where supporters can organize and put forth solutions. “A protest won’t work right now, it won’t get the school board’s attention,” the Grade 10 Char-Lan student said. “We’d be better off to have a community event and invite out our MPP and discuss solutions.” Right now, Moffat says that he enjoys the small classes, and community that exists at his rural school. “At a small school, everyone knows each other and everyone is friendly,” he said. “At a big city school we wouldn’t get the same support.” Moffat also currently has a 15 to 20 minute bus ride to school. If Char-Lan in amalgamated into one of the larger Cornwall schools under the proposed UCDSB plan, the length of his bus ride would at least double. Char-Lan alumnus Kathy Moffat wrote an impassioned letter on the Save Char-Lan page that describes why this rural school is so important to its students and its community. “I feel sorry for the students of

the next generation who will never get to experience the close knit community at CharLan. Now all the student will be slammed in to one big city school where every student is just a number,” Moffat wrote. “The school board obviously is unaware of Char-Lan’s motto of “Small enough to know you – Large enough to serve you.” Others commented on the page that the whole reason for them living in a rural area was so that their children would not have to go to a city school. “We moved to the country from the city so our children could experience living and learning in a small community,” wrote one Ana Kramar. As for Robert Moffat, he feels that the school board is not thinking about the best interest of its students. “The school board is only looking at us like numbers or livestock,” Moffat said. Moffat also pointed out that while the UCDSB is using the number of 10, 000 empty spots across the school board that his school is not empty and is currently at 80% capacity.

* An independent clinical study in the US has shown that primax provided a significant improvement in ease of listening in demanding listening environments. A newly developed methodology using objective brain behavior measures (Electroencephalographic data), showed a significant reduction in listening effort for mild to moderate hearing impaired subjects using primax hearing aids in speech-innoise situations applying advanced features such as Narrow Focus and EchoShield. ** Primax has the complete set of premium features and powered by binax. Two clinical studies have shown that binax provides better than normal hearing in certain demanding environments (University of Northern Colorado, 2014; Oldenburg Horzentrum, 2013): Speech Reception Thresholds (SRT) in cocktail-party situations improved up to 2.9 dB for wearers with mild to moderate hearing loss using Carat binax or Pure binax hearing aids with narrow directionality, compared to people with normal hearing.

OPINION

Belleville hockey is back Grief-stricken Belleville is back in the game. Next season the city will be home to the Ottawa Senators’ American Hockey League club. The team will be called, what else, the Belleville Senators. Belleville lost its beloved Bulls when new owners moved the Ontario Hockey League club to Hamilton. With little chance of landing another OHL franchise, the city started sniffing around the professional ranks. Enter Ottawa Sens’ owner Eugene Melynk. Details are still under wraps but the city and Melynk have an eight-year agreement which calls for an estimated $18.5 million in renovations - new ice surface and 1,200 more seats - to the Yardmen Arena, to be completed before next season. The city plans to soften the financial blow on property tax bills by withdrawing cash from a reserve fund. Something similar to the way Cornwall financed the Benson Centre. The huge expenditure on the arena, about the same age as our civic complex, is being sold as a monumental investment that will bring jobs and millions of dollars in economic benefits to the city, not to mention priceless publicity. Some of this might sound familiar to folks in Cornwall. You know, the infamous Aces fiasco that cost taxpayers at least $3.5 million. The deal was so bad that city hall fought to keep details confidential. The difference is that unlike the CornwallAces circus, these guys look and sound like they know what they are doing. There won’t be any Fig Newtons. And unlike the Cornwall experience, the groundwork to go after an AHL franchise wasn’t hatched in a downtown diner on a slow Saturday morning in the shoe business. The standing joke was that Quebec Nordiques’ owner Marcel Aubut got a speeding ticket on his way to sign the deal in Cornwall because he was afraid the city might suddenly realize it was being taken to the cleaners, that even if it sold out every game it couldn’t do any better than break even. Unlike Aubut, Sens’ owner Melynk is talking as if he really wants the Belleville marriage to work, not just seeing how much he can milk out

of the city before moving on. For the Sens’, a big plus is having its No. 1 farm team three hours away. So far, so good in Belleville. In the first week, after the announcement, down payments were made on 1,000 season tickets. Meanwhile in Cornwall we are left with, “What if?” COUNTING HEADS Cornwall’s population hasn’t changed much in the last 35 years - it jumped to 36,000 from 17,030 when the city annexed 29 square miles of Cornwall Township in 1957 - but that hasn’t been the case with other municipalities farther down Highway 401. The sign on the western entrance to the city puts the population at 46,000. There was a time not that long ago when Brantford, Sarnia, Peterborough, Belleville, Guelph, Barrie, North Bay, Welland and Niagara Falls had about the same population as Cornwall, in a couple of cases smaller population figures. Today those communities, thanks to their proximity to Toronto and the GTA sprawl, have experienced much greater population booms Barrie 140,000, Guelph 121,700, Brantford 95,000, Niagara Falls 84,000, Peterborough 80,000, Sarnia 74,000, Welland 51,000, North Bay 55,000 and Belleville 51,000. Cambridge, when it was Galt, had a smaller population than Cornwall back in the early 1960s. Today it has 130,000 residents. Brampton had 20,000 residents in the early 1960s. It has grown into the quintessential ‘bedroom’ community. It’s population has boomed to 600,000. HERE AND THERE The University of Oklahoma Sooners football team lost one of its biggest long distance fans last week with the unexpected death of Akwesasne resident Joey Whitecrow. He grew up in Tulsa and as a baseball pitcher helped his high school win the Oklahoma state championship in 1976, but football was his first love. Several years ago Whitecrow made a substantial wager on the Sooners. It turned into a nail-biter. With 10 seconds left the Sooners, down by five points, had the ball on the opponent’s one-yard line. They scored. Whitecrow did a victory lap up and down the bar where he was watching the game, and announced that the next round was on him. What he didn’t see was the penalty flag on the play .... against the Sooners. The line of

scrimmage was moved 10 yards back. The Sooners didn’t score. The clock ran out. They lost. A deflated Joey still bought the round. ... Jane Craig (nee Whiteside), who died last week, was a key fixture in the Lost Villages Museum across from Lakeview Height. She grew up in one of the Lost Villages. Interesting footnote is that her father owned a large parcel of property in what is now Riverdale. Jane, Joyce and Peter streets are named after his children. ... Another loss was Guy Briere who co-operated Willard’s Hotel and Barn restaurants at Upper Canada Village. Nobody loved life more than Guy. TRIVIA ANSWER St. Lawrence Breweries was on the northwest corner of Augustus and Water streets. It opened in 1907 with the capacity to brew 8,000 gallons of ‘Cornwall Ale’ per day. The plant soon fell on hard times and closed in 1920. It later became a warehouse for cheese manufactured at area plants. It finished life as an ice house before being demolished. Several years ago a Toronto developer proposed a multi-storey condo project for the site but never got past the blueprint stage. TRIVIA On Nov. 11, 1959 radio station CFML went on the air serving the largest Frenchspeaking population in Ontario. Its studio was on Pitt Street just north of Thirteenth street. The ‘ML’ in the call letters were named after the owner, a Cornwall resident. What was the owner’s name. REAR-VIEW MIRROR Rustic Camp Kagama on Sheek Island and the roaring Longue Sault Rapids, all lost to “progress”. ... New York Cafe where the 50s and 60s high school crowd would

gather before heading to Massena (where the drinking age was 18) on Friday nights. It was the unofficial transportation depot for anybody without a ride. ... Bonneville Bottling (7-Up and Orange Crush)in east Cornwall, the Coke plant on Amelia Street and the Pepsi plant at Eighth and Pitt streets. Kids would press their noses against the front windows of the Coke plant to watch glass bottles being filled while shuffling along on the assembly line. ... Devitt Fuels. Blanchard Fuels. Lally and Munro Fuels. McGuire Fuels on First Street East, next door to Atchison’s Feed Store. ... Guaranty Trust branch on Pitt Street and its first manager the classy John Cook. THIS AND THAT Let’s put a positive spin on the growing Canada Geese population (aka problem) in the city - we don’t have to drive to Upper Canada Bird Sanctuary west of Ingleside to gawk at them. ... Brookdale Avenue reconstruction has moved ahead of schedule. Could be finished by the end of November. That collective sigh of relief is from residents who have had to endure a bridge demolition and disruptive reconstruction of Brookdale in consecutive years. SPORTS STUFF As somebody put it, the World Cup of Hockey is one of the biggest cash grabs in sports. The pre-season clash had zero interest in the United States. And in Canada, it is hard to get excited about a Team Europe vs Team Canada final with the Ruskies and Americans sitting on the sidelines. It was a lot more exciting when it was Team Democracy taking on the evil empire (aka Soviet Union).

In life there are ‘The Road Trips’. By that I mean the grand treks, the journey to end all journeys, the memorable adventure of discovery by automobile. Let us assume that you are the driver exploring territory unfamiliar to you. How do you navigate? It could be just the road signs, a travelling companion (such as a grandparent), a map or a GPS. The year is 1974; a trip to a remote Berber village in Morocco. We had been invited to spend the weekend in a Marrakech

shop-owner’s home. No map, no road signs. In my best high school French I asked, “A quelle direction?” As our VW Westfalia accelerated our host replied, “Tout droit, tout droit!”. I instantly made an abrupt turn to the right. “Monsieur, tout droit!” Once again I turned sharply to the right. “Arret” he cried out in exasperation. That’s the day that I learned that ‘tout droit’ means ‘straight ahead’, not ‘always to the right.’ The driver and the person giving directions must have a clear understanding of each other’s background and vocabulary. To me “At 3:30” does not mean ‘almost tea time’, it means ‘At hard right’. You must remember that when travelling

with grandpa as navigator “We turn where the red barn used to be…” might mean something to grandpa, but nothing to me. He’s working with the geographical data base of a six year old riding along a gravel road. In the ensuing 70 or so years, it has been widened, straightened and paved. The farms and forests have been replaced by row houses, strip malls and U-Stores. Not all data bases are in the mind. Some are transferred onto paper in the form of a map. I once came across a pair of octogenarians from Quebec, parked on the shoulder of Boundary Road, north of Highway 401’s interchange 796. I stopped to see if they needed assistance. As the driver pointed to a yellowed map, he asked,

“How we do get to Kingston from this road here?” I studied the map. It was so old that highway 401 was not yet on it! They had somehow made it this far by trying to approximate the path of the Highway 2 they may have travelled on their honeymoon. That day they were probably on a golden wedding anniversary trip down Memory Lane. I offered them my current Ontario Government road map, hi-lited the route they would now have to take and pointed them in the direction of the 401. As they drove away, I shouted, “Congratulations on having made it this far!”

UCDSB admits to failing our students Dear Editor, The latest UCDSB plan indicates that the board admits failure to provide continued education for the English Public students in the Eastern part of our board. As a bureaucratic manipulation of numbers, the plan might rate a pass, but on educational, social, cultural and

student concerns, the plan rates a zero. This plan is an educational earthquake. It will result in the uprooting of English Public education in Glengarry by closing the two high schools. Exciting Career Opportunities in Manufacturing in SDG Marissa Fontaine has been at SigmaPoint Technologies Inc. in Cornwall for a year and has found that success stems from constant learning. After starting her job at SigmaPoint, Marissa found that her willingness to learn was matched by the eagerness of her new colleagues to teach. When she started at SigmaPoint, Marissa was soon put on a path where she began to work with Kata boards. Kata boards were started by the car company Toyota as a way to refine their production lines, identify problems and plan for success. Marissa’s proficiency with working with the Kata boards has led to her being given the responsibility to build boards of her own for new cells and product lines. Once they are up and running she will be in charge of coaching that line because the Kata board encourages continuous improvement. She has also been sent on trips to places like Boston to learn new techniques, presentations and share ideas.

Kids learn what’s wet CORNWALL, Ontario - As part of their educational series, the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences (SLRIES) was host to a number of youth from schools in the eastern Ontario area today, for the final day of this week’s 2016 Eastern Ontario Children’s Water Festival. Volunteers from L’Ecole Secondaire L’Heritage were on hand to lead the many information stations set up to educate and entertain children, while they learned about water quality and water supply issues. Today’s event was geared towards the French school boards, with around 25 ‘Discovery’ stations offered in both official languages. “It’s cool, we just come over from our classroom and volunteer with the kids,” said local student Randy Smith. “We’ve worked to create learning opportunities for both elementary and high school students that directly enhance Ontario science and technology curriculums,” said Cristina Charette, Festival Coordinator at the SLRIES. “Students learn about the science of water, as well as the importance of water conservation in a hands-on environment. The students even learn about water technologies, such as water treatment.” “By coordinating a festival for students that expands their knowledge of water, we’re taking an important step towards ensuring a safer water supply for generations to come,” added Charette.

What happens when chemicals mix with our water supply? Zach Meunier spent the day showing children what can happen from when chemicals and toxins mix with runoff water (Marc Benoit/ Seaway News).

The St. Lawrence River Institute facilitates three Water Festivals a year, to promote environmental based awareness for area school children. The events take place in Cornwall, Spencerville, and Casselman. Glengarry Highlanders Midget B come home with gold on ice demonstration of teamwork. “It was a total group effort” said head coach Ryan Winter. Goaltending was stellar, when called upon, the blue line controlled the flow of all the games with great offensive pressure and their anticipation led to quick transitions which created many offensive opportunities. Forwards skated hard, created a lot of pressure down low and battled hard in dirty areas. If the group continues on this path it will be an exciting season. All of the girls left the rink with a gold medal, and more importantly a smile on their face and a weekend full of memories that they will not soon forget.

Colts forward Nick Lalonde is tied for the CCHL lead in scoring with 7 goals and 11 assists for 18 points. Colts net minder Liam Lascelle is tied for 2nd in goaltending wins with 6. Your family is precious to you. To WDMH, our patients are precious to us. In order to better care for them, we hope you’ll join your neighbours and friends in making a gift today. All patients and staff will be grateful for your generosity. ADCs will bring Safer Care An anonymous donor is thankful to have WDMH close to home and has offered to match gifts given via this program to help bring Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) to WDMH, creating safer care for patients. We’re excited to tell you more… The new ADCs will replace the old ‘night cupboard’, which is close to 40 years old! Our old cupboard and system are inefficient and leave room for human error when choosing and counting medications. At WDMH, delivering 150,000 medications to patients each year is the most complex thing we do. With such a high-volume, repetitive, and labour-intensive process, it’s prone to errors. ADCs are part computer/part robot and ensure the right drug or drugs are dispensed to the right patient at the right time. This simplifies the process and increases patient safety. This is a big project that consists of five Automated Dispensing Cabinets, a pill packager and a computer to support them. This is the hospital’s number one priority equipment need this year and the need is immediate. The estimated cost for the project is around $400,000. That seems like a lot, but every donation counts and brings WDMH one step closer to safer care for patients. And with this generous matching gift program, an anonymous donor is doubling your gift, helping patients even more. Your gift and generosity will ensure that compassionate, excellent health care is there for those you care about most, close to home. Thank you!

cleaning power as a detergent. Its main purpose is to absorb odors. A sprinkling of dry baking soda before vacuuming a carpet will not help in the cleaning process but it will freshen carpeting just as well as any commercial carpet deordorizer such as Carpet Fresh. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a less alkaline powder. Leave an open box in the refrigerator and freezer, or sprinkle a little in the dishwasher, drains, garbage cans and cat litter boxes as it will absorb and deordorize.

The Harvest Fellowship Church opens as a modern house of worship Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Harvest Christian Fellowship Church on Ninth Street has gone through a dramatic revitalization to become a very modern house of worship. With the addition of a coffee bar, modern sound systems, coloured lighting, a day care and technological integrations, the Harvest Fellowship hopes to give an updated feel to their Sunday services. “We wanted to contemporize our services,” said Pastor Roy Stephenson. The coffee bar was added as a meeting places where Harvest Christian Fellowship’s two services could meet and interact. The Harvest Christian Fellowship has had to divide its congregation across two services due to the number of parishioners. One service is held at 9 a.m. on Sundays and the other follows at 11 a.m. Pastor Stephenson did not want this division to separate his church’s community, so he hopes that people will take advantage of the coffee

bar to meet, mingle and connect. Along with the coffee bar renovation, they also renovated the main hall of the church. The main hall now contains a stage, coloured lighting and a full sound system. Besides some HVAC and plumbing work, all the renovation work was done by members of the Harvest Christian Fellowship. The stage can accommodate a full rockband who will be playing contemporary songs instead of the traditional hymns, but Pastor Stephenson says that the message will be the same. “This is the same message, but a different method,” he said. The renovations to the main hall and coffee bar is the third and latest renovation that the church has gone through. Members of the Harvest Christian Fellowship hard at work renovating their church. Previously, the church added an elevator and renovated the downstairs to have an area and a room for breastfeeding mothers. adult with the same sticker can come and pick for younger parishioners. Harvest Fellowship has also instituted a them up after service. Parishioners ages six to 15 have their own modern system to keep track and ensure the The Harvest Christian Fellowship held a celebration at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 in honour worship hall and classrooms downstairs. Twilight Men’s League Champs

A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. He took out a business card, wrote ‘Revelation 3:20’ on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, ‘Genesis 3:10..’ Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.” Genesis 3:10 reads, “I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.”

Match of the Month

This is a Couple Match, a unique one at that! Big Brother D’Arcy in the middle was once matched with Patrick on the right. Big Brother Patrick and D’Arcy now do a match together. Patrick is learning the ropes on how to be an amazing Big to Little Brother Nolan. These guys are the first to volunteer with the agency when we need a helping hand. They not only help out the agency a tremendous amount, but they still make time for each other and go to hockey games, play pool, attend BBBS events and make time for a DQ treat. Thank you to this amazing match for always being there for us!

Congratulations to Barry Benton, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Township of North Glengarry’s 9th Annual Business & Community Awards Gala held on September 29, 2016. He was honoured for his over 40 years of volunteering in his community as well as serving on the Apple Hill Fire Department. The week before Benton raised almost $1,000 in the Strathmore Community Centre Shave-A-Thon. Do something nice for someone today. Then don’t say a word about it.

ANAF raises big money for Hospice Cornwall

Sandy Collette (centre) accepts a cheque on behalf of Hospice Cornwall from Lucille Foubert (right) and Sue McMurray (left) of the Army, Navy and Air Force Club (missing from the picture is Anita Bazinet). The club raised $5,655 for Hospice Cornwall from a dance they held on September 10 which featured bands AM-FM, The Butlers and Country Crossroad. Program Schedule for the week of OCTOBER 10 TO OCTOBER 16, 2016

SCUTTLEBUTT A junior manager, senior manager and their boss were on their way to a lunch meeting. In the cab, they found a lamp. The rubbed it and a genie appeared. “I’ll grant you one wish each,” the genie said. Grabbing the lamp from his boss, the eager senior manager shouted, “I want to be on a fast boat in the Bahamas with no worries.” And, poof, he was gone. The junior manager couldn’t keep quiet. He shouted, “I want to be in Miami, with beautiful girls, food and cocktails.” And, poof, he was gone. Finally, it was the boss’s turn. “I want those idiots back in the office after lunch.”

Great job! A presentation of over 100 quilts was made at a recent Monkland Highland Quilter’s Guild meeting. The quilts were made by members of the guild as well as quilters from across Ontario and Quebec. The quilts were made for the victims of the Fort MacMurray fires that took place earlier this year. A special thanks to Darlene McGimpsey who generously picked up the shipping tab!

Pet Tip of the Week: As we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend, make sure to keep human food out of reach for your pets. Leftover human food can be hazardous to your cat or dog. Chicken and turkey bones can easily shatter and choke them. Other food items to keep away from your pets include coffee grounds, macadamia nuts, salt, tomato, potato and rhubarb leaves and stems, alcoholic beverages and onions, as well as anything with mould.
