The event takes place in the park area at the intersection of Power Dam Drive and Second Street West on Saturday, August 12, 2017, starting at 8:00 am.

This event is a fund-raiser for Cornwall Hospice and includes exciting Dragon Boat races, the Waterfest Market, a Silent action, the ever-popular Tug of Oar, and local musicians and other acts on the Waterfest stage. Food

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall BMX Club is extremely pleased to announce they will begin construction of a BMX Canada sanctioned race track in the City’s Guindon Park this summer.

The City of Cornwall has generously allocated an unused portion of the park and provided the club with $18,000 in funding through their Community Projects Grant program. The funds will be used for purchasing and renting equipment, clearing the land, and the excavation of the material needed for the final track shaping.

The club has also received commitments from the Rotary Club of Cornwall who has agreed to assist with funding for the materials and construction of the starting hill, BMX Canada who will be providing the track design and final shaping services, Cor-Tek Industrial Services who will be constructing the starting gate, and Leduc Property Maintenance who will be providing excavation and clearing services. Speedy Glass/ Krown Undercoating Cornwall has also kindly agreed to donate a large shipping container to be used for equipment storage, and Kristina’s Massage Therapy in Cornwall has already donated funds which are used for the club’s administration, registration and marketing.

BMX racing is an official Olympic sport that is open to anyone who can, or is willing to learn how to ride a bicycle. 3 to 8 competitors of similar age and skill, line up at a special starting gate and race bicycles for position over bumps, humps, jumps and berms, and then across the finish line. Racers ride the track two or three times to try and qualify for the day’s main event, and how a rider finishes in the main event will decided what prizes they will be awarded for that day’s race (i.e. medal, trophies or certificates for 1st, 2nd and

MAXVILLE, Ontario - As the Glengarry Highland Games prepares to celebrate its 70th year on August 4th and 5th, the many planning committees are working to make it an outstanding show for everyone who attends.

Added to the traditional Games events of piping, drumming, dancing and heavyweights are several events that have grown to be much anticipated attractions of the Games.

One of these that has attracted a strong following over the past 10 years is the Tug of War.

The tug of war was a feature of many of the early Games but fell out of favour until North and Glengarry teams began their rivalry pull before the Friday night Tattoos. In 2008, a demonstration Tug of War was held between the SD&G Highlanders and the Cameron Highlanders from Ottawa. Since then the Highland Regiment Tug of War has rapidly grown to last year’s record number of 12 teams competing before an enthusiastic Games crowd.

The Highlander Tug of War … continued include: 1. The Brockville Rifles 2. 42nd Field Regiment (The Lanark & Renfrew Scottish), Royal Canadian Artillery The Camerons are currently on a winning streak of five wins in a row from 2012 through to 2016. Of the past ten competitions, The Camerons have won all but three! The home town Glens are always a favourite and have placed in the final round almost every year. This year will likely be no different. That said, The Toronto Scottish look to be strong contenders this year and have taken on expert coaching and instructional periods on technique.

Combined with their size, they’ll prove to be a

tough team for the Camerons and Glens to beat.

The Argylls and E&K Scots have been steady performers for some time now, and the Lorne Scots have been here twice before and each time they improve their technique and power.

It is expect ed that all these teams will provide tough competition. The Lake Superior Scottish travel the greatest distance...18 hours on the road from Thunder Bay. That distance has never been a weak point for the team as they always show up ready for a tough fight on the rope.

The two new teams, Brockville and 42 Field Regiment, are a welcome expansion to the competition. They will be the wild cards in this year’s show.

“It’s great to see the interest in the competition spread across the Army Reserve. Sports programs like The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup, through the demands of training and competition, contribute to the operational readiness and overall effectiveness of the Canadian Armed Forces...and it’s great to see the Glengarry Highland Games be a part of that contribution,” add Walsh as prepares for what should be another exciting Tug of War event.

The Highlanders Tug of War takes place on Saturday August 5th starting at 10 am on the east side of the infield with the final pull at 5:30 pm just before the massed bands.

CORNWALL, Ontario – A group of young soccer players got a chance to hone their skills for this season at the Challenger Sports soccer camp.

“We had them learning things about how to operate in defensive phase, how to work in attack phase and working as a unit,” said one of the Challenger coaches Jonathon O’Neill. “We also worked on fundamentals.”

U14 Blazers Manager Joanne Parker has been working for the last three years to bring Challenger Sports’ soccer camp program to Cornwall. U14 Blazers Coaches Brad Kisnics and Alain Boisneau both endorsed the camp coming to Cornwall to help sharpen their player’s skills.

The camp ran from July 3 to 7 and was an all day camp (from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and saw boys and girls from a range of ages participate.

Jonathon O’Neill, one of the coaches, was actually a soccer player from Ireland who took the opportunity to coach with Challenger Sports to come and visit Canada.

Claude McIntosh In the 1975 Ontario Hockey League draft the Cornwall Royals made the captain of the Canadian midget champion Barrie club, a defenceman, their third-round pick, 39th overall.

Mike Gibb went on to play three solid seasons with the Royals.

Gibb was a talented player who battled to become a regular on the Royals’ blue line corps that included Dave Ezard, Graeme Nicolson and Jerry Ingram.

Last week, Gibb lost his biggest battle when he succumbed to cancer. He was 59.

Life after hockey was good. A graduate of General Vanier High School in Cornwall and Canadora College, he became a successful North Bay entrepreneur, owning several businesses, including Swiss Chalet and Boston Pizza franchises, and pieces of real estate. He recently sold his franchises and was semi-retired, operating Gibb Property Management.

“He was a community and business leader who believed in his city and gave back generously,” North Bay Mayor Al McDonald told the North Bay Nugget newspaper. “He will be missed by all who knew him and by so many who had no idea how generous he was. He was fun to be around.”

A former employee wrote on Facebook, “He was such a great man and he gave me my first job in the world.”

Veteran Royals trainer Steve Ouderkirk has fond memories of Gibb.

“Mike was a great skater and puck-handler with a great shot,” recalled Ouderkirk. “Always a huge smile and dry sense of humour.”

Ouderkirk said he visited with Gibb several years ago while on a business trip to Northern Ontario.

“We had lunch at one of his restaurants.

Unfortunately, it didn’t have a liquor licence so he couldn’t buy me a beer. But we had a good visit with a few laughs about his days in Cornwall with the Royals.”

While with the Royals, Gibb lived with Dunc and Barbara Fulford.

His obituary read, “Mike will be remembered for his competitiveness in hockey which eventually led to his successful entrepreneurship. He was well know for his sense of humour and practical jokes, and he will be missed by family and friends.”

The scoreless OCOT Junior Baseball League struggle ended with Ron Branchaud’s daring but calculated steal from third base in the bottom of the seventh with two out, giving Coca-Cola Monarchs a 1-0 nail biter over Paragon Royals. In a weird twist, losing pitcher Bernie Larue came off the mound with a no-hitter.

While trying for his fifth-straight victory, Larue struck out 10 and issued two walks. However, his teammates committed three errors. Winning pitcher Lionel Currier gave up one hit, an infield single by Gary McDonald, and struck out 12. He walked two. Only two balls in the game reached the outfield.

SHORT SHOTS Ted Rogers purchased the Toronto Blue Jays in 2000 from Belgian beer-maker Interbrew for $140 million. Today the Blue Jays are worth $900 million. ... CORNWALL, Ontario – The Alzheimer’s Society will be holding their annual golf tournament on Aug. 18 at Summerheights Golf Links.

The tournament has supported the Alzheimer’s Society for the past 17 years.

There will be 140 participants divided into teams of four and the Society hopes to raise $25, 000 to help fund its important work.

“The Society provides support services to people throughout Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott, Russell and Akwesasne,” wrote Josée Roy-Pilon of the Alzheimer’s Society in an email to Seaway News. “It is important to learn about your diagnosis and about ways that you can live well with dementia.”

“The Alzheimer Society provides this service entitled “First Link” to people living with dementia, to family members and education to the public so that they can feel confident becoming dementia friends,” she continued. “Partial funds for these services are provided to us by the Ministry of Health, but each service is financially supported by our community. There are over 3,600 people in our region living with dementia, helping them is only possible through the sponsorship of our community.”

All money raised by the golf tournament will stay in the community to help members of the community.

In addition to the golfing, there will be fun activities on the course for the beginners and for the seasoned players, as well as a chance auction at the Clubhouse.
