Handout from Cornwall Peewee Celtics WHITBY, Ontario - The Cornwall Peewee Celtics went into the 2017 provincial tournament ranked eleventh out of sixteen ‘B’ teams.

After an incredible unbeaten run of 6 games, they emerged as champions.

This is the third straight year the Cornwall peewees have come home Ontario champions.

The past two seasons it was in the ‘C’ division.

This year the Celtics moved up to the B division based on their performance leading up to the championship. This B title has been 47 years in the making, as the last Cornwall team to win at this level was in 1970.

The Celtics met zone rival and the previously unbeaten Gloucester Griffins in an exciting final that Cornwall won 4-3. It was the sixth meeting between the two teams this season. Ethan Montroy and Joe Vida had 2 goals each to lead the way. Tommy St. Louis was an absolute wall

in net, as he was the entire tournament.

In the semifinal, Cornwall faced the overwhelming tournament favourite Burlington Chiefs. The Chiefs had played A level lacrosse for most of the season and were the highest ranked team in the tournament. The Celtics defence and goaltending kept them in it as they adjusted to the fast paced play. Knotted in a 3-3 tie with less than 3 minutes left, Nik Dovas found the back of the net for the Cornwall victory. Ethan Montroy had two highlight reel goals and Jack Vandrish added another.

Cornwall met Toronto Beaches in the quarterfinal and in spite of penalty trouble, dominated in a 7-2 win. Montroy and Vida had another 2 goals each with singles going to Kieran McLeod, Brayden Besner and Carson Martin.

The Celtics finished first in their preliminary Next the Celtics shut down the lacrosse pool with a record of 2 wins and a tie.

They opened with a 7-4 win over the Windsor legend John Tavares coached Mississauga Warlocks. Dovas and Montroy each scored a hat Tomahawks, 3-1. Goals were scored by Montroy, Vandrish, and first year player Landen Sweet. trick and Thomas Shoniker had a single.

In their final round-robin game, the peewees tied the London Blue Devils 4-4 to secure first in their pool. Montroy had another hat trick with a single going to Kieran O’Connell.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Gregor MacPherson of the Cornwall Sea Lions competed on the national stage at the 2017 Canadian National Junior Swimming Championships at the Pam Am Sports Centre in Toronto at the end of July.

“The atmosphere there was great,” said MacPherson, “Witnessing national records being broken was really cool.”

MacPherson said that the competition was really tough and that although he did not place as well on the first day of competition as he had hoped, he did improve his standing by five places on the second day.

He said that he learned a lot and now has a better feel for what it is like to compete at a national level.

“I’m going to have to work on a few things before I go to Senior Nationals,” said MacPherson.

Right now, MacPherson practices nine times a week, or about 17 hours. He says he

focuses on cardio, endurance and short speed exercises. During the school year, MacPherson will be getting up at 5 a.m. to make it to the pool to start his training before classes.

Outside of swimming, MacPherson also enjoys video games and track and field.

He hopes to compete at the Olympics someday.

Brute Strength displayed in local Strongman Competition Quest Strength Training & Massage Therapy held its annual Strongman competition on Saturday, August 19th. The events included pulling a 30,000lb tractor trailer, kettle bell throws, atlas stone lifts at 3 different heights and more.

The Petes, one of the best defensive junior clubs in the country, built up a 4-1 lead midway through the second period and at times seemed to be toying with the Royals. Then the Royals, who had given up a Memorial Cup record 11 goals the night before, started to score and score and score. Four unanswered goals gave them a 5-4 victory and a berth in the championship game, against the Petes.

Murray and the Pats were livid. They claimed the Mike Kennan coached Petes had thrown the game to avoid the Pats. All of Regina was in an uproar. There was talk of a championship game boycott by Regina fans.

At a news conference, Murray lashed out at Keenan and the Petes. He did everything but call for a Royal Commission to investigate the Petes.

And, he made a prediction: A Peterborough

rout over the Royals, whom he called an “inferior” team that didn’t belong in the final. He said the result would be an embarrassment to junior hockey.

Embarrassment? Funny game, that hockey.

At 1:28 of the overtime period, Robert Savard scored to give the Royals their second Memorial Cup victory. A third came the next season in Windsor.

While the jury remains out on whether the Petes purposely let up on the accelerator in that final round-robin game, Murray remained convinced his Pats were done in by the Petes.

While never accusing the Petes of a fix, the folks who run the tournament changed the format to four teams (host team bye) to take away the possibility of an alleged fix.

Meanwhile, Mike Keenan was taken off Bryan Murray’s Christmas card list.

Bryan Murray’s journey to the National Hockey League, which started in 1973 with the Pembroke Lumber Kings, came close to making a stopover in Cornwall.

The Royals were looking for a head coach in the summer of 1978 after Orval Tessier accepted an offer from Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

The long list of candidates came down to Murray and Doug Carpenter. Owner Paul Emard went with local talent.

Murray, the former Shawville high school teacher and businessman (he owned a Pembroke area motel), went on to become head coach of the Regina Pats who won the Western Junior Hockey League and a berth in the 1980 Memorial Cup tournament, along with the Royals and Peterborough Petes.

The Pats were tournament favorites. Big and tough with lots of scoring power. Centre Doug Wickenheiser, a Regina native, was the best offensive junior player in the country.

Montreal Canadiens would make him first overall pick in the draft later that summer.

However, when the puck dropped for the championship game in the Agridome, the Pats were bitter spectators ... and Murray, as it would turn out, was a far better coach than prognosticator.

The stage for a near riot was set when the Pats trounced the Royals 11-2 in their fourth game of the tournament, which gave them a 1-3 record and a shot at the championship game. Unfortunately, their fate was in the hands of the Petes. A Peterborough win over the Royals in the final round-robin game would put the Pats in the championship game against the Petes. A win by the Royals would eliminate

CORNWALL, Ontario - In just a week, 16-yearold Madison Grant will make the voyage from Cornwall to Victoria, British Columbia to pursue her dream of playing professional rugby.

Grant recently travelled to Victoria to take part in a training camp with members of the Canadian Olympic team. From there, Grant gained a spot in the centralized Rugby Sevens program on the U-18 Canadian team, as well as the women’s all ages top-24.

“I’m trying to be mentally and physically prepared for what’s coming, but it is bittersweet

moving so far away from home,” said Grant. “It’s definitely overwhelming moving across the country, but I’m just taking it one day at a time.”

Having played many other sports throughout the years, Grant says the physicality is what attracted her to rugby. Having picked up the sport just two years ago, Grant says it just stuck.

“I grew up playing basketball. In rugby, you need to be aggressive, but you also need to be fast and have a good sense of your surroundings,” said Grant. “Athletically, it challenged me in a whole new way.”

Grant says that her coach helped instil a solid work ethic from the early stages of her rugby career with the St. Joseph’s Panthers. She says

CORNWALL, Ontario - Golfers from across the region will tee it up for the Team Cornwall, Mayor aCouncil Golf Fun Day on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017.

The tournament attracts over 150 golfers each year to a day filled with sport, fun and networking, and offers an excellent opportunity for local business people to showcase Cornwall.

The tournament will be held at Summerheights Golf Links.

“This tournament is one our members look forward to every year,” said Peter Gault, Chair of Team Cornwall. “It is a great opportunity for community leaders to network and show their out of town guests that Cornwall is a great place to live – and play.”

The tournament will feature a continental breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by a Shotgun Start at 10 a.m. Lunch will be included, as well as a buffet supper around 4 p.m.

“We are fortunate to have such a beautiful facility such as Summerheights Golf Links in Cornwall,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “The tournament is an excellent example of what can happen when local organizations get together for the

common good of the community.”

Still time to register Registration fees are $125 per golfer, which includes breakfast, 18 holes, cart, lunch and a buffet meal. Registration is available online on the Team Cornwall website.

“Each year we host several people from out of town to showcase our community,” says Mr. Gault.

“These visitors return back to their home communities with a positive experience about what Cornwall has to offer.”

Team Cornwall is a unique organization that exists to spread the word about Cornwall’s positive attributes as a city in which to live and do business.

Team Members use their own networks to deliver timely information about the community and its growing development opportunities, and in doing so, act as ambassadors for the City’s economic development effort.

The proceeds of the tournament will go towards offsetting the costs of Team Cornwall’s ambassadorial efforts. The not-for-profit organization hosts a number of events throughout the year and maintains a popular website. In addition, Team Members travel the world to promote Cornwall, at their own cost.
