CORNWALL, Ontario - Tony Luis faced Giovanni Straffon in his third fight in his home town and in his first title defense at home.

The fight took place at the Civic Complex on Saturday, Oct. 14 and was promoted by Liveco Boxing.

There were five fights on the card, with the third fight for Cornwall local Ronnie Robidoux being cancelled due to his opponent being unable to fight because of an injury.

The fourth bout ended in the second round

after Nick Guivas was knocked down by the Ukranian Oleksandr Teslenko leading to a knockout victory for Teslenko.

Luis defended his NABA Lightweight Championship against Straffon for 10 rounds and won via judges decision.

Luis originally won his title after a fight against Cam O’Connell in Cornwall on June 17 for the then vacant title.

After the fight, Straffon challeneged Luis to a rematch, but Luis refused saying “I’m moving forward.”

BROCKVILLE, Ontario - Schools across the Upper Canada District School Board have raised approximately $70, 000 through Terry Fox School Runs held over the past two weeks, with fundraising efforts continuing.

“Once again our schools have come through for Terry,” said Superintendent David Coombs.

“It’s great to see that our students remain committed to raising funds for cancer research and showing empathy to those struggling with this terrible disease.”

Some of the UCDSB schools that performed well this year include: • Viscount Alexander Public School raised $3,870.

• Char-Lan District High School raised $3,980.

• Athens District High School (ADHS) raised $1,552, more than six times that raised in the 2016 run.

• Toniata Public School raised $1,900, more than tripling last year’s total. For exceeding last year’s tally, Principal Rich Tamblyn will honour a promise to kiss a fish at the October 31 Spirit Day assembly.

The Cornwall Nationals are promoting an anti-texting and driving campaign. to text and drive and afterwards it will be proudly displayed in the arena at the Cornwall Civic Complex so that they can see their name and their pledge every time they come to a game.

The Cornwall Nationals are proud to be committed community partners and being involved in local schools is one of their main undertakings. The team will kick off their Recycling Challenge once again this season, growing from five elementary schools last

season to fifteen this year. Also, at the end of the month they will be presenting their Healthy Nats program to grade 7 and 8’s across the city.

As busy as they are off the ice, the team is also preparing to dominate the Federal Hockey League this season, as they have acquired talent from across the world to put together a team that already looks championship worthy.

Their Home Opener is taking place at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Saturday, November 4th at 7:30pm and tickets are available now.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Texting and driving has become a terrifying epidemic and the Cornwall Nationals will not sit by and let it continue to happen. Putting the phone down while you’re behind the wheel is the message presented in their new “It Can Wait” AntiTexting and Driving campaign being launched in seven local area high schools during the week of Oct. 16.

“When I was in high school, all these presentations were about not drinking and driving and I think they really got through to us back then and now most kids know better than to drink and drive but they don’t seem to realize how dangerous texting while driving really is” explained Cornwall Nationals Sales & Marketing Director Kris McCarthy.

He added “We truly feel that, as influencers in the community, it’s our job to spread awareness like this and let kids know it’s not cool”.

The professional hockey team has partnered with the Cornwall Community Police

Service, the Cornwall Fire Department, The Cornwall Paramedics, Allstate Insurance, Herb’s Towing and M. John Sullivan Funeral Home to create a presentation that is engaging and informational but also impactful.

“We want to make sure the kids feel something and that they remember how they felt during the presentation the next time they go to text while driving” said partner and M. John Sullivan Funeral Director Marie-Claude Beauvais.

To ensure that a dialogue opens up on the days of the presentations, Herb’s Towing will be strategically placing a wrecked car out front of most schools to help kids see the damage that can really be done when they take the risk of texting and driving.

“We felt that kids needed to see something powerful like an actual car that’s been in an accident so they could realize the full scope of our presentation” said McCarthy “we really want them to remember the phrase “It can wait”’.

CORNWALL, Ontario- Madison Grant is on the right track to pursue her dream of playing professional rugby as she has been named to Canada’s Women’s Seven’s team. In just a week, Grant will travel to Victoria, British-Columbia to take part in training camp with members of the Canadian Olympic team.

Grant currently attends St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School in Cornwall and has competed for the rugby team there. In just two years of playing the sport, she has already shown great potential and a great love for the sport. It will be the 16 year old’s first major test on the journey towards her Olympic dream.

“With the start of the new Olympic cycle

already underway, it’s hugely important to us to get what we currently believe is the core of the team that will be in Tokyo 2020 working & growing together as a group,” said John Tait, Head coach of the Canadian team. “The program has evolved greatly over the last five years and it is gratifying to see the athletes we identified for the Youth Olympics, Youth Commonwealth Games and FISU 7s teams coming through and providing us with some quality depth within this new centralized group.”

Grant will look to impress throughout the series in hope of making the team that competes in the 2020 Tokyo summer games.

Team Canada will take to the pitch for the first time Nov, 30 in Dubai for the first part of the series set to end Dec, 1.

Panthers three-peat in close Charity Bowl win Chad Bissonnette, Special to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario- The St. Joe’s Panthers got the 24-21 win in the 11th annual Charity Bowl last night at Joe St. Denis Field. It was the Panthers third straight Charity Bowl win and seventh overall. They now lead the series seven wins to four.

The Falcons opened the scoring in the first quarter on a touchdown pass by Tyler Fisher.

The Panthers got on the board next, a missed field goal rolled out of the back of the end zone for a rouge to make it 7-1. The Panthers got another chance at points with another field goal but they missed again, the ball sailed into the end zone but the Falcons misplayed it and it was recovered by the Panthers for a touchdown to make it 8-7. After a bounce went the wrong way for the Falcons on kickoff, they were pinned deep in their own end and just one play later, a safety to give the Panthers a 10-7 lead going into halftime.

The Panthers scored first in the second half on a touchdown pass by Brody Fairbairn which

was nearly batted down by a Falcon defender to make it 17-7. The Falcons stormed their way back with a Blade Best touchdown run to make it 17-14. The Panthers added on to their lead by scoring on a sneak in the forth quarter to make it 24-14. The Falcons marched back late in the forth quarter. Costly penalties by the Panthers found the Falcons gaining yards and fast. Blade Best capped the drive for the Falcons on a short touchdown run to get his team back within three points. With only 54 seconds left, the Falcons needed an onside kick to keep the hope alive. The kick took a good bounce but a Panther player pounced on the ball before the Falcons had a chance. Two rushes by the Panthers killed enough time to the point where they could take a knee and end the game.

Despite the victory, the M.V.P award went to Blade Best of the Falcons for his stellar performance and two touchdowns on the night.

The Panthers are back at Joe St. Denis field next Thursday night for the Rose Bowl game against La Citadelle. The game is set to start at 6p.m. The Falcons will end their regular season at home next Friday when they host Tagwi.

Game time is set for 2p.m.

THIS AND THAT PART TWO Belleville Senators will have played nine straight road games before their American Hockey League home opener Nov. 1 in the refurbished Yardman Arena. The nine-game road trip is a minor inconvenience when compared to the six-week road trip Tulsa Oilers of the old Central Hockey League endured in 1984. The team went bankrupt in February and the owners high-tailed it out of town leaving a mound of unpaid bills. The bankruptcy voided the lease on their home rink.

The league took over the Oilers and the team hit the road. The Oilers’ roster included former Royals goalie Ron Scott and defenceman Graeme Nicolson. ... Bob Murray owns one of the longest active National Hockey League hockey careers.

The captain of the 1972 Memorial Cup champion Royals has been in the NHL as a player and front office employee since 1975 when he joined the Blackhawks, who had drafted him 52nd overall in 1974. He spent his first pro season with Chicago’s farm team in Dallas. When he retired as a player in 1990, Murray joined Chicago’s front office. He went from the Hawks to Vancouver Canucks to Anaheim Ducks, where he’s the general manager.

FROM THE WHERE ARE THEY NOW FILE Fred Boimistruck, an outstanding defenceman with the Royals in their back-to-back Memorial Cup runs, is retired as a (third generation) locomotive engineer. His junior defence partner Fred Arthur is a family physician in London, Ont. BOWLED OVER By 1943 hundreds of thousands of young men were in the military and this created a manpower crisis that threatened to shut down the bowling industry in the United States.

There weren’t enough young men to work as pinsetters. The Bowling Proprietors Association of America had a bright idea: Why not use German and Japanese prisoners of war being held in the U.S. as pin boys. The U.S. government gave it a thumbs down.

Steve “Bubba” Smith, Cornwall Curling Centre’s veteran icemaker, and his brother-in-law Robert Savard, who scored the OT goal to give the Royals the 1980 Memorial Cup title, got their relationship off to a rock’em, sock’em kind of start.

Smith was suited up for the Royals 1978 training camp (he was one of the late cuts) Blue/White game when Savard, a rookie defenceman from the Sudbury area, caught Dave Ezard with a hard check that sent the flashy veteran to the bench in a great deal of pain.

On the next shift Smith went after Savard and, as they say in shinny’s back alleys, tuned him pretty good for taking a run at the Royals’ star. The kind of ‘police’ action that would make Don Cherry proud.

It wasn’t the last time they would meet.

Two weeks later Smith’s sister brought her date home for the family to meet. It was Savard, the stiches removed but still sporting a black eye, and not expecting to meet the guy who gave it to him.

For Savard, it was one of those “Oh no, not

you!” moments.

“Shook his hand and said ‘no hard feelings, eh,’ “ recalled Bubba.

Savard and Sandra Smith married and live in Timmins where Savard worked for Ontario Hydro.

He’s retired.

“I wear his Robert Savard (Royals) button when he visits,” laughed Bubba.

Savard owns three Memorial Cup rings. Two with the Royals (1980-1981) and one with the Kitchener Rangers (1982). He is the only player on the planet to play with three consecutive Memorial Cup championship teams.

Savard started the 1981-82 season with the Royals but was traded to Kitchener 33 games into the schedule, which paved the way to a recordsetting Memorial Cup run.

THIS AND THAT With all the medical evidence piling up vis-a-vis concussions and brain damage, Don Cherry’s claim that nobody gets hurt when a couple of good old boys go at it rings pretty hallow. ... It’s not the greatest sports book ever penned, certainly not in the same league as Roger Kahn’s “The Boys of Summer”, but Jim Bouton’s “Ball Four”, a best seller when it came out in 1970, still a good read, if you can find a copy.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Liam Lascelle made 36 saves to backstop the Colts to a 4-1 victory over Hawkesbury at the Ed Lumley Arena Thursday night.

The win snaps a three game losing streak for the Colts.

The Hawks outshot the Colts 37-24 overall.

Justin McRae scored his 6th and 7th goals of the season to pace the Colts offence.

CORNWALL, Ontario- Every Saturday morning from October to April at 8:45 a.m. or 11:00 a.m., enjoy some good old fashioned curling with the Men’s Industrial Curling League. Each team consists of four players and the cost of the

season is $740 per team which also includes two meals and prizes.

The league currently has 16 teams but are still looking for more to fill the roster.. The goal is to get about 24 total teams. The league is welcome to all ages with the average age being about 40 but, there are some youth among the teams.

“I got involved because it is a very social

game.” said Dan Laperle. “It is fun to go out and get a drink with the guys after the game is over.”

The league was first created about 25 years ago by members of Domtar to be an industrial league for the men who worked there but, has since transitioned into more of a sportsman league for anyone.

The league has two divisions, “A” and “B” with the “A” division being the stronger of the

two. The teams battle it out week after week for the top spot in the league. The season ends off with some playoffs to determine the overall winners.

“Everyone wants to win the trophy at the end of the year but the main thing is that everyone has fun” said Dan Laperle The league officially started Saturday Oct, 7.

Youth Hunter Apprenticeship Program fully-subscribed for 10th season Handout from SNC

SOUTH NATION REGION, Ontario - For the tenth year in a row, a partnership between South Nation Conservation (SNC) and Delta Waterfowl has resulted in a fully-subscribed First Hunt Program!

The program is all about introducing young people to Delta Waterfowl’s First Hunt Program, which includes the Ontario Hunter Safety course and the Canadian Firearms Certification.

For 10 years running, youth between the ages of 12-15, keen to learn about hunting regulations have taken part in this free program.

“The Youth Hunt is designed to provide young hunters with the knowledge needed to practice safe and ethical hunting,” said Philip Duncan, SNC’s Property and Approvals Assistant II. “We’re training the conservationists of tomorrow to respect wildlife, habitat, private property, and personal safety.”

With over 12,000 acres of community land across a 4,384 square-km jurisdiction, many economic and recreational activities take place on SNC properties year-round including hiking, geocaching, bee keeping, and horseback

The 2017 program participants riding. A range of hunting opportunities also exist for species such as White-tailed deer, Moose, waterfowl and upland game.

Hunters are reminded that they require a hunting permit before accessing SNC-owned lands during hunting season.

The cost for the hunting permit is $100 and provides access to over 8,500 acres of forested land. Permit revenue helps offset some of the cost of hunting outreach initiatives, including

the First Hunt Program.

Residents are reminded to keep themselves and their pets safe outdoors this time of year by wearing high visibility clothing as some areas of SNC property may have multiple users at any given time.

Hunting is not permitted on SNC’s Conservation Areas where managed trail systems exist.

The one chipping tip every golfer should know Everyone who plays golf has at one time or another faced their own bugaboo type shot.

The shot they either fear or wish someone else would play for them. For some people this could be the drive; for others, it might be fairway bunker play or putting. To each his own.

But there is one type of shot that bothers a lot of players, regardless of their experience. And those are the chip shots.

Many people can drive a ball a good distance, putt as if they have radar in their heads, but it’s that little peice of real estate close to the green that wonks up their scores on a routine basis. Poor chipping equals much higher scores. It’s that simple. And let’s face it, there’s nothing worse than getting close to the green and watching your chip shot screech across

the green, pass the hole and go sliding off the other side. By that same token, a high-flying chip shot that overshoots is just as annoying.

Now I know (as I’m sure you do, too) there are a gazillion tips on proper chipping. Some of these are very good tips and should be followed by just about everyone. Others are, well, less than good. But as with all things golf, do what fits you best and works out for you on the links.

There is, however, one chipping tip that everyone needs to know and understand and practice. And that has to do with your hands on impact.

A major factor in hitting consistent chip shots is for the hands to lead the clubface through impact.

The vast majority of thinned or fluffed chip shots occur when the clubhead overtakes the hands and is, therefore travelling on the upswing, rather that delivering a descending blow at impact.

The first thing to do at set up is to move the majority of your weight onto the left foot. The ball is played towards the back of the stance, and the hands go ahead of the ball. This is vital if your want to control your shots. Setting up your body so your hands can do what they are suppose to do is crucial to getting this right.

Do not underestimate the importance of a good, proper stance when preparing to chip.

The chip shot can now be played with the correct downward strike. You should NOT be trying to slide the clubface under the ball, nor

should you be trying to scoop the ball into the air.

The key now is to make sure that you keep the hands AHEAD OF THE BALL and not allow your wrists to dominate the shot. Players who get “wristy” at impact run the risk of thinning it clean through the green or chunking it a few inches.

I’ll share some more chipping tips with you in the future and you can decide if they work for you or not. But the one chipping tip you should truly consider as being worthwhile, is the one you just read. Keep those hands ahead of the clubface.

OSHAWA, Ontario - The Cornwall Typhoon Atom tier II team were crowned Atom B Champions with a great performance at the 18th Annual Oshawa Lady Generals Fall Classic held between Sept 21st – 24th.

During the round robin the Cornwall Typhoons went 3-1 moving into the semi-finals on Sunday morning, where they won 6-2 against the Nepean Wildcats.

The finals were against the Peterborough Ice Cats who they played in the round robin & only defeated them 1-0 the morning before. So, it promised to be a close contest.

During the final the pace of the game was back & forth with the two teams ending in regulation in a tie 1-1. Overtime solved nothing & the teams were headed to a shootout.

After going through several shooters aside the Cornwall Typhoons were victorious with the 2-1 win in shootouts to capture the 18th Annual Oshawa Lady General Fall Classic Championship.
