Forest Blakk releases new single CORNWALL, Ontario - The musician known as Forest Blakk has released a new debut single “Love Me”.

Originally from Montreal, Blakk spent several formative years in Cornwall and SD&G having gone to school in Martintown and Cornwall and his family owned a farm in Glen Roy. He says he remembers being in Cornwall during a tough time in his life when he was homeless. He remembers going to the Agape Centre for support and food and going in and going to school in town.

Blakk’s relationship with music began at the age of 15 when his grandmother gave him his first guitar. He says that at the age of 21, when he had his heartbroken, he began to pursue ways to express himself musically. He describes how he worked his way up the chain from acoustic nights at different venues, to open mic night’s to joining bands.

Blakk has performed in Calgary and New York amongst many other places and is currently based in Germany.

Blakk explained that his current musical experience with this new single has been few years in the making.

“I wrote the song a few years ago,” he said.

“There is such a release when its done.” Blakk already has plans to follow-up on “Love Me” with another single “I first found you” next month.

He said that right now he will continue to focus on putting out singles before thinking about producing an album, but he said that an album wasn’t out of the question.

“When you have a show, people want something to take home with them so there is still a place for producing albums,” he said.

Blakk told Seaway News he wanted to send out a big thank you to Cornwall.

“It has been such a big part of my musical career and up-brining,” he said. “Cornwall is a rough and tumble town with a lot of hardworking people and great stories.”

Corporal Herbert William RAYMOND enlisted in the military on January 25, 1940 and served until September 22, 1945.

He was a member of the S.D. & G. Highlanders, 1st Battalion and was sent to the Isle of Wight on a special assignment with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry to train with the British Commandos. He then served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He fought at Dieppe, where he was critically wounded. After being hospitalized for 3 months, he returned to active duty until the end of the war. He received the following medals: The Defence Medal (awarded for the defence of Britain); The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (awarded to persons who voluntarily served on Active Service); The 19391945 Star (awarded for those undertaking operational services during WWII); The France and Germany Star (granted for operational service on land in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany after DDay landings on June 6, 1944 until May 8, 1945 – the end of active hostilities in Europe); The Dieppe Bar (awarded to those who participated in the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942); War Medal (British decoration awarded to those who served fulltime in the Armed Forces); Maple Leaf Silver Bar (awarded for 60 days of service outside Canada). Herbert W. Raymond returned to civilian life, working at Howard Smith Paper Mill, then joining the Cornwall City Police Department where he worked for 29 years.

John Gordon Proulx (Alexandria, Ont.) (known to his fellow soldiers as Jack) he was a member of the S.D.G. Highlanders and a WWII vet.

He enlisted in 1940 trained at the basic training camp at the Dingwall Estates Cornwall and in Kingston, then in the United Kingdom. He trained as an armourer, also assigned to CORU (ordnance) and RCOC (field army supply). Belonged to CDN (Canadian Infantry brigade) also R.C.E.M.E. Served with 1st Infantry in Italy Operation «Husky».

His unit Royal Canadian Electrical Mechanical Engineers served under the British 8th Army while in Italy going through Sicily, up as far as Rome. Was then transferred back to S.D.G. Highlanders and went in to Northern Europe up to Holland till his company was returned back to Canada 1945. He served 51 months overseas with a total of 68 months in the Canadian Army. He returned home as Sgt. Oct 26, 1945. In 1958, received the Military Service Medal given to him by Lieutenant Col. G.E. Edgerton ed. cd commanding officer of Alexandria Armories. He remained involved with CDN Army in Alexandria till 1962.

Here is something I wrote paying homage to my Grandfather, a WWII War Hero!!! He was wounded in the war. That wound would have sent most men home. He recovered and returned to battle. I am so proud. An Argus from his squadron crashed near Puerto Rico and he lost many friends.

Captain Gault was in charge of the Glens Anti-Tank Platoon. The Glens were at Emden, Germany when the fighting ended on May 5, 1945.

SF100169 CPL. D.J. Amirault of New Edinburgh, Nova Scotia, served 12 years in the Canadian Army from 1956 to 1968, four years in the Royal Canadian Engineers and eight years in the Royal Canadian Signals. During those years, Doug served in Germany from 1957 to 1959 with the Nato Forces and also served as a Peacekeeper in Cyprus for six months in 1964 with the United Nations Forces. The remainder of his service was in Canada.

During those 12 years, Doug was awarded the Nato Medal, The Peacekeeper’s Medal, the U.N. Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration (C.D.) After leaving the Army in 1968, Doug joined the O.P.P. and served 25 years, all in Lancaster, Ont. Doug was awarded the Police Examplary Service Medal.

Doug presently resides in Cornwall, Ont. with his wife Diane.

CORNWALL, Ontario - With current Chief of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) Dan Parkinson getting ready to retire in 2018, the Police Board has announced his replacement.

CCPS Deputy Chief Danny Aikman has been named as Designate Chief effective Jan. 1, 2018 and will work for a year on the transition with Parkinson. Aikman will fully take over as Chief Jan. 1, 2019.

Aikman has been with the CCPS for more than 30 years and has served as Deputy Chief since 2003.

In 2011 Deputy Chief Aikman was invested in the Order of Merit for Police Forces by then Governor General David Johnston. He has also received the Police Exemplary Service Medal for 20 and 30 years of service and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

“Thank you, I’m excited and humbled by the opportunity,” Aikman said on Twitter.

Between all the gloom and doom Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings Now and then, squeezed between all the gloom and doom, a feel-good story pokes through, one that tugs at the heart strings.

So it was a few days back.

It started with a telephone call to the Norman Street home where D.J. and Trudy Cameron live.

D.J., a retired Cornwall Electric lineman (line person or whatever) and one of the old hockey sweats and all-round good guy, has been battling some serious health issues.

The caller was his old Cornwall pal Gilles Leger, a senior member of the New York Rangers’ scouting staff.

Leger, who earned the handle Goldfinger back in his young playing days because one year he played on a half dozen championship teams, everything from hockey to basketball, told Trudy he was on his way to visit D.J. and that he was bringing a “surprise.”

A knock at the door and in walked Leger who announced to D.J. that he had a couple of guys who would like to meet him. They were Rangers’ president Glen “Slats” Sather and assistant general manager/senior vicepresident Jim Schoenfeld. They were on their way to Ottawa from Montreal. Sather and Schoenfeld agreed to make a side trip to Cornwall to visit with D.J., a big Blueshirts fan.

Sather is best known for guiding the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cups.

Schoenfeld is best known as the New Jersey coach who called referee Don Koharski a “Fat

pig!” and told him to “Have another doughnut.” All on television.

“He (D.J.) was surprised. It raised his spirits,” said Rob Cameron, a brother, who said the two Ranger executives couldn’t have been more gracious.

Nice touch, Gilles.

YA GOTTA WONDER FILE Last week on the Prime Time Sports show (Sportsnet) host Bob McCowan was kibitzing with colleague John Shannon. (The late afternoon show is on radio and TV and has a national audience).

McCowan borrowed Shannon’s pen to write down something. McCowan wondered aloud where Shannon got the “free” pen? He read the writing on the shaft of the pen out loud: “Village Diner. Cornwall, Ontario. 613-9387000.” The two sportscasters then got into a discussion on whether the diner had hot chicken sandwiches on its menu. Talk about a plug. Just for the record, the Village Diner is on Tollgate Road in the old bus station. The unanswered question is how Shannon got the pen?

schools were closed for Remembrance Day. There were no milk and bread delivers to households. However, grocery stores, gas stations and auto dealerships were allowed to remain open. ... The last sections of Roosevelt Bridge were removed. ... Guy Sauve was the new manager of the New Parkway Hotel. ... A Cornwall man was given a seven-day jail sentence for hitting a Cornwall police officer. ...

An east Cornwall bootlegger was fined $250 after being nabbed in a police sting operation. ... The Brookdale overpass built at a cost of $400,000 was officially opened. Its construction became a priority after a train-car collision at the level crossing took the lives of four teen-agers. ... HERE AND THERE The New York City cop who shot and wounded the driver responsible for the carnage has been elevated to hero status and praised by the mayor and governor. The same was the case for the Malonebased New York State Trooper who shot and wounded Dannemora prison escaper David Sweat. If they had been police officers in Ontario they would have been suspended on the spot and their careers put in limbo while the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) carried out a drawn-out probe. And, no doubt, an Ottawa Citizen deputy editor would have railed about out-of-control, gun-happy cops who need to be trusted with nothing more lethal than a water pistol. Perhaps the relentless beating up on cops is rooted in a speeding ticket.

The day after Halloween in my neighbourhood Christmas decorations started appearing on my neighbours’ homes.

I know some people whose homes were already decorated for Christmas in advance of Halloween.

While I appreciate their excitement for “The most wonderful time of the year” they seem to be forgetting something. They seem to be forgetting that between now and Christmas, there is an occasion that still needs to be observed, an occasion that we have the duty to observe.

November 11th, Remembrance Day should not be overshadowed by Christmas. It isn’t as flashy, no one gets any presents and that’s the way it should be. Remembrance Day should be a solemn time between Halloween and Christmas where we as a country take the time to honour those who fought for the military and were forever changed by it.

Really, it is only a short time on November 11th that we truly pause to reflect on that sacrifice and for two weeks before that we wear poppies to show our appreciation to veterans. In perspective, this is a very brief amount of time to remember such a huge sacrifice compared to

the energy and time spent on Halloween and Christmas. Perhaps that’s because there is no candy or gifts to buy.

I spoke with both the Cornwall Legion and the RCAF Wing in town and they gave me their perspectives on it.

“I think it is too soon,” said Linda Fisher of the Cornwall Legion. “Put a flag up, put some poppies up, but don’t start decorating for Christmas until after Remembrance Day.” Peter Hood over at the RCAF Wing remarked how eager the stores are to get Christmas decorations on their shelves.

“Normally putting up Christmas decorations happens after the 11th is my understanding,” he said. “But the stores have gone haywire and have really commercialized it. We don’t put up Christmas decorations at the Wing until after the 11th and I don’t at my home either, but I’m military and that’s the way that it is.”

There are 12 full days between the end of Halloween and Remembrance Day. Is it too much to restrain ourselves for less than twoweeks before we get wrapped up in the food, fun and frenzy of the Christmas season?

AROUND AND ABOUT Local cops with help from the OPP and RCMP made a major drug raid last week on one of those well-fortified drug dens in the east end of the city. Sad fact is that the raid and arrests will barely put a dent in the local drug biz. ... Remplacement du passage inférieur entre les routes de comté 2 et 34, remplacement des ponts sur la rivière Raisin et remise en état du ponceau du ruisseau Finney, conception et évaluation environnementale de portée générale APERÇU DE L’ÉTUDE Le ministère des Transports de l’Ontario (MTO) a retenu les services de Dillon Consulting Limited (Dillon) afin de réaliser la conception et l’évaluation environnementale de portée générale pour les travaux suivants le long de l’autoroute 401, dans le canton de Glengarry Sud, dans les Comtés unis de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry : • Passage inférieur entre les routes de comté 2 et 34 – Remplacement de la structure existante par une nouvelle structure avec un trottoir, une voie dans chaque direction et des voies pour tourner. Les véhicules continueront d’y circuler pendant les travaux. Pendant la démolition de la structure, les véhicules circulant sur l’autoroute 401 devront faire un détour sur une courte période durant la nuit. La fermeture des bretelles d’accès (au nord et au sud de l’autoroute 401) sera requise sur une courte période d’environ 12 journées.

• Ponts sur la rivière Raisin – Remplacement des deux ponts de l’autoroute 401 sur la rivière Raisin. Pendant les travaux, l’autoroute ne comptera qu'une seule voie dans chaque direction.

Sept frères et sœurs exposent leurs œuvres à la galerie Le Corrid’Art du Centre culturel de Cornwall, au 510 rue Second est, Cornwall.

Tout a commencé avec les parents, Dolores et Armand Patenaude. Dolores était une couturière hors pair alors qu’Armand créait des meubles en bois. Leurs neuf enfants ont continué la tradition en s’orientant dans différentes facettes artistiques. Un frère et une sœur sont malheureusement décédés.

Patenaude, et les quatre sœurs, Reina Trudel, Marie Dupuis, Linda Roy et Hélène Couture présentent des œuvres magnifiques dans différents média tels que peinture, poterie en bois, courtepointe, tapis tissé, artisanat, zentangle. Ils nous amènent aussi quelques œuvres de leurs enfants, petits-enfants et arrière-petits-enfants.

Ils sont une preuve irréfutable que l’expression artistique a toujours été une valeur importante pour nos familles. Une exposition à ne pas manquer. Le vernissage aura lieu jeudi le 9 novembre 2017 entre 17 heures et 20 heures.

Le 31 octobre dernier à l’école Rose des Vents, certains élèves de 6e année ont conçu une maison hantée pour tous les autres élèves de l’école.

Ce projet a nécessité beaucoup de préparation. La veille de l’Halloween, plusieurs élèves ont préparé les tables, les décorations et les accessoires. Le plan de la maison hantée a été pensé par Mme Mélanie Quesnel et Mme France Sabourin. Le matin même, certains élèves très excités sont arrivés à l’école dès 7h afin de fabriquer cette maison dans une classe. Qui a dit que les élèves n’aiment pas se lever pour venir à l’école?

Pendant la semaine précédent l’événement, 4 él èves ont invité les classes à décorer leur porte en faisant un “Flashmob”. Lors de leur arrivée à la maison hantée, les classes choisissaient si elles visiteraient la maison avec les lumières éteintes ou allumées. Les classes étaient accueillies par des élèves et se faisaient accompagner tout au long de leur visite.

Les braves élèves qui se sont aventurés dans la Grâce aux élèves de 6e année et à leurs enseignantes, 485 élèves de maison ont rencontré sur leur chemin des squelettes, notre belle école ont vécu une expérience inoubliable et terrifiante! des clowns effrayants, des zombies, des sorcières, Les élèves de la classe de Mme Mélanie Quesnel, 6e année. des animaux, une licorne et des sportifs en état de décomposition! De loin, on entendait des cris de peur et des rires. Les élèves sont très fiers d’avoir réussi à effrayer monsieur Robert Davidson, le directeur adjoint, lors de sa visite de la maison hantée.

Au cours du printemps dernier, je me questionnais sur l’impact de la rénovation d’un centre communautaire dans un vieil emplacement.

Est-ce que cela en fallait la peine ? Est-ce que nous mettions bien à profit les fonds publics remis par nos différents bailleurs de fonds et ces investissements portent-ils fruit au sein de notre communauté francophone?

Pour tous ces questionnements, la réponse est oui. Cette réponse a été renforcée par la lecture du livre Si la beauté rendait heureux de François Cardinal et Pierre Thibault publié aux éditions La Presse. Tous les deux se sont penchés sur le sens de la beauté et de l’impact d’une architecture innovatrice sur le bien-être des gens. En conclusion, il est pertinent de bien investir et de se doter de belles choses si l’on veut rendre notre communauté plus heureuse.

Cet impact, je le vis depuis plus de six ans d’efforts à la rénovation de notre centre de personnes âgées qui se métamorphose au fils des ans.

Ce bel et nouvel environnement a un impact sur les employés, les bénévoles, les membres et la communauté qui utilisent nos services. Ceuxci sont plus enclins à venir nous voir, à venir flâner dans notre nouveau coin-café et à découvrir les services et les programmes offerts au fil des saisons. Ayant un espace communautaire fonctionnel dans l’est de notre municipalité, il devient pertinent et important d’y injecter un élan de jeunesse et de faire rayonner la beauté dans ce secteur.

and this summer created murals in downtown Ottawa and in Montreal. He said he started out creating similar stuff to what his mural on Kastner’s has covered over.

“I was that kid who was scribbling on the back walls,” he said.

Girling said that so far, he’s heard a lot of positive feedback in regards to the mural.

“Every time I was back there people were stopping and commenting,” he said. “No bad

comment so far. People are very happy with it.”

Logan explained that he hopes to do other murals downtown and that murals like the one behind Kastner’s are the best way to deter graffiti.

“The biggest way to fight stuff like that is with stuff like this,” he said. “Kids leave stuff alone that they know has been done by one of the vets. If there is ever anything painted over it, I’ll come back and fix it.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - New vibrant Canadian colours have transformed a downtown Cornwall parking lot.

Artists John Logan approached Burton Girling of Kastner’s with the offer to replace the graffiti on the back wall of their building with a new mural.

“I park back there a lot and I saw the wall,” he

said. “I didn’t have an idea at first, but we wanted to do something Canadian.”

Originally, there were ideas of having a trading ship or the old Seaway International Bridge, but in the end, with some advice from one of the residents at the local senior’s centre, he settled on fall maple leaves and a Spitfire fighter.

Logan had four people in his crew and they took five days to complete the project.

CORNWALL, Ontario – For the second year in a row Cornwall’s history is being immortalized in time for the holidays. The popular Cornwall Historic Walking Tour is the subject of a new 13-month calendar. Each month features a different plaque from the downtown section of the walking tour, which was unveiled earlier this year. The calendar features the artwork of renowned Cornwall artist Pierre Giroux and brings to life historical scenes from Cornwall’s past, including the Cornwallis Hotel, the Capitol Theatre, the Rossmore House and New York Cafe. “The Walking Tour has been universally welcomed by local residents and visitors to our city who have told us they appreciate our dedication to local history and local art,” said Todd Lihou, Centretown Coordinator. “Now people can celebrate the holidays with a gift that is steeped in Cornwall’s proud heritage.” Proceeds from the sale of the calendar will be re-invested in the walking tour project, to help expand it in 2018. And it won’t cost you a cent to visit as the City of Cornwall is waiving parking fees at all municipal lots in the Downtown Business Improvement Area.

Shop the Blocks takes place Nov. 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. in downtown Cornwall. Participating businesses are staying open late and offering a chance to view their newest collections and current trends in time for the busy holiday shopping season.

Typically the city charges to park at metered spaces until 6 p.m. on weekdays, but Cornwall’s Chief Building Official Chris Rogers said that won’t be the case Nov. 8.

“We will waive parking costs at that time,” he said.

The evening is sure to be a hit with shoppers downtown.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Carol-Ann Breedyk’s art was on display this weekend for a good cause at Love Love Food right in the heart of Cornwall’s downtown.

Breedyk has been a lifelong artist and tries to use mediums that gives something old, new life. For instance, one of her pieces that was for sale this past Saturday at Love Love Food was painted on old wood that used to be a part of a barn.

“Everything is recycled or pulled out of dumpsters,” she said. “I walk into a canvass store

and everything is so generic and we need to be pulling stuff out of landfills.”

Part of the proceeds from the art show went to support Ten Oaks, a week-long summer camp for children aged eight to 17 who are members of the LGBTQ community. Ten Oaks is designed to empower its campers and increase their self-esteem.

Breedyk said that she hoped to do a show like this again next year.

“My goal is to expand this every year to make Cornwall more aware,” she said. “I know there are kids that need these services.”

What memories do you have from the first six years of your life? I’m sure all of you have recollections from that time period.

My early childhood days, 1939 to1945, took place in the northern Ontario town of Coniston, downwind from the belching smokestacks of Sudbury. My year younger wife, spent her early days in Southampton and Isle of Wight areas of England.

When I asked her, “What do you remember from those days?” Juliet recited a litany of vivid

recollections. “I remember the throbbing engines of the Dorniers returning home after a night raid. The wailing of the air raid sirens. There is one very vague memory of the whistle of a falling bomb. At dawn, Dad, with his tin helmet, standing at the doorway, watching the bombers going home.”

“I slept in a hand-me-down pink crib. I remember running to our air raid shelter, being pulled along by my mother. When we slept in the shelter, I wore a ‘siren suit’, something like a snowmobile outfits. I had two, one pale blue, the other a brown check pattern.

I preferred the brown one, because the German pilots wouldn’t be able to see me in it.”

“Then there was the horrible margarine ration: yellow, waxy, vile. Powdered dry milk, labelled ‘National Dried Milk’. It came in a metal canister,

“When I first started school, I remember weeds growing in the craters where buildings once stood.

There were gaping holes in the stonework of those still standing.”

What did I remember of from that same era, but thousands of miles away? I remember the night-time burning of a house at the end of a dead end street in Coniston. It was a cold winter night.

Recently, when I told my seven-year older brother of that incident, he retorted “You couldn’t remember that! You were only three when that happened.”

My only other memory comes from Toronto’s Sorauren Avenue hill that leads to Dundas Avenue. I was in a cheering crowd that lined the street as a huge aircraft fuselage was being towed up the street.

In contrast with my wife’s numerous and detailed memories of that wartime era, why do I remember virtually nothing? Is it because my environment was one that had no perceived threat of war? Until the age of five I neither spoke nor understood any English. Ukrainian was my mother tongue. Perhaps my early memories may be trapped in a linguistic strongbox, to be opened only if I were to be reimmersed in the Ukrainian language.

My prayer for this up-coming Remembrance Day is that some time in the future, there will be no one who will be burdened with memories of war.

Grow a Moustache to fight Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect Canadian men. One in eight men will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime.

Prostate cancer is a disease where some prostate cells have lost normal control of growth and division. They no longer function as healthy cells.

A cancerous prostate cell has the following features: • Uncontrolled growth • Abnormal structure • The ability to move to other parts of the body (invasiveness).

It is important to note that not all clusters of cells growing in a mass are cancerous, and

that a prostate with an irregular shape is not necessarily cancerous either. It is advisable to ask your doctor what it may be.

Prostate cancer can be slow-growing and some men who develop prostate cancer may live many years without ever having the cancer detected. It is important to get screened regularly so that if you do develop prostate

cancer, the appropriate action can be taken.

A significant proportion of prostate cancers, if untreated, may have serious consequences.

SignS and SymptomS Common signs and symptoms of prostate cancer may include: • Difficulty urinating • Urgent need to urinate • Frequent urination, especially at night • Burning or pain when urinating

• Inability to urinate or difficulty starting or stopping urine flow • Painful ejaculation • Blood in the urine or semen Symptoms are not always present especially in the early stages of prostate cancer.

If detected and treated in its earliest stages (when cells are only in the prostate), your chances of survival are greatly increased.

Vinegar is forever being rcommended as a cleaner, for everything from windows and floors to false teeth. It may squeak, but it isn’t really very good at removing soil and breaking down grease. Because most soils are acid, an alkaline cleaner is much more effective at cutting them.

Vinegar doesn’t have the emulsifying ability of a soap or detergent either. It does have the value as a rinsing agent, though. Custodians have used a vinegar rinse(1/2 cup vinegar per gallon of water)to neutralize the alkaline residue left behind from floor cleaners and leave surfaces bright and streak-free. This also applies to dishwashers, and laundry, as it will provide brighter colored laundry and less spotted glassware.

Vinegar’s acid personality also makes it good as a neutralizing agent, mild bleach, acid spotter and has some deodorizing ability. Distilled, plain white vinegar is best to use for all cleaning puposes.
