CORNWALL, Ontario - After many years of running the popular Italian Night event, the MS Society Cornwall & District Chapter is passing the torch over to the United Way of SD&G. This year’s Italian Night will be on Friday, Jan. 12 at the Cornwall Legion. Tickets are $25 each and go on sale on Dec. 26 at Rona, the Cornwall Legion and are available through the United Way if contacted at 613-330-6432 or by email at lori@unitedwaysdg.com The MS Society’s Karen Torrie-Racine is retiring as are all current Cornwall & District Chapter MS Society Leadership Volunteers after some 35

years of fundraising and volunteer service.

Italian Night along with other MS Society fundraising events in the community will not be supporting the MS Society any longer, hence the passing of the event to a new cause.

“The United Way supports 14 important community programs,” explained Racine. “The MS Society is officially passing the torch to the United Way and we are doing that by passing the Italian flag.”

United Way Executive Director Lori Greer was happy to take up the torch and plan another successful Italian Night.

“We’re thrilled,” she said. “I’ve attended many times. It’s a terrific event. We’re shifting what we’re doing to have events outside of our usual

Many past volunteers will be coming back and will be working alongside new volunteers from the United Way to make sure that the 10th annual Italian Night is a success.

Once again Casa Paolo will be providing some of the delicious pasta sauce and Casa Paolo is one of Italian Night’s corporate sponsors this year alongside Rona Home Centre, the Sign Factory, Riley’s and Tim Hortons.

Also returning this year is the live entertainment in the form of the Kealey-Greer All-Star Band.

There are 300 tickets available and they go quick. Last year’s Italian Night was completely sold out.

Kevin Lajoie named new Tourism Coordinator CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is pleased to announce that Kevin Lajoie has been appointed the City’s new Tourism Co-ordinator.

The Tourism Coordinator oversees efforts to market Cornwall to tourists as well as manage the delivery of information to visitors. As such, Mr. Lajoie will be working closely with community partners to build upon a successful year of events and activities that attracted thousands of people to Cornwall in 2017.

Mr. Lajoie has considerable experience in working with Cornwall businesses and community organizations. He has held the position of Public Information Coordinator with the City since 2011, where he has been responsible for the delivery of information on municipal programs and services to local residents. Prior to working for the City, he was the Project Coordinator for Heart of the City following time spent as a Journalist with the Standard Freeholder.

Mr. Lajoie will be replacing Linda Wilson, who is leaving the position after guiding the transition of tourism services to a new model of service delivery. The City of Cornwall would like to thank Ms. Wilson for her expertise and efforts over the past year.

Mr. Lajoie will assume his new responsibilities in January 2018.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Armories was a hub of activity this Wednesday, Dec. 20 as the Optimist Toy Drive distributed toys collected throughout the season.

For some, the thought of awaking Christmas morning to a tree barren of gifts is a sad reality.

With poverty affecting many families within the community, the Optimist Club of Cornwall has been offering a helping hand for almost 70 years, providing food for those in need during the holidays.

Joining forces with Sparky’s Toy Drive with the Cornwall Professional Fire Fighters Association, the event was held in conjunction

with the Children’s Christmas Fund Community Christmas. Expecting to dole out a whopping 1200 baskets for children aged 0-16, it was a busy day for everyone involved.

Prior to the big day, families were required to apply for assistance through Cornwall’s Salvation Army branch, allowing them to fill their carts with festive necessities. With over a thousand families expected to benefit from this year’s donations, the total food cost for the event can be upwards to $80,000.

Children’s Christmas Fund Chairman, Peter Morgan says that while the event involves a considerable amount of preparation, the end result makes all obstacles worthwhile.

“What it comes down to is trying to give children a better Christmas,” said Morgan.

MAN ASSAULTS PERSON AND THEIR DOG

CORNWALL, Ontario - Mark George, 25, of Ottawa was arrested on Dec. 19, 2017 and charged with assault, assault with a weapon, injuring an animal, possession of metamphetamine, possession of novo-methylphenidate, breach of probation for failing to keep the peace and breach of recognizance for failing to remain in his Ottawa residence.

It is alleged on Dec. 19, 2017 the man assaulted a man known to him, struck him with a golf club and kicked his dog. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During the investigation the man was located by police, taken into custody and found to be in possession of controlled substances. He was charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Andre Roy, 48, of Mascouche, QC was arrested on Dec. 12, 2017 and charged with arson.

It is alleged the man set fire to his own vehicle which was parked on Rotary Lane on June. 20, 2017. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On Dec. 12, 2017 the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Jan. 18, 2018.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Derek Richardson, 36, of Cornwall was arrested on Dec. 14, 2017 and CORNWALL, Ontario – Alcide Ceasor, 54, and charged with breach of undertaking for failing Calvin Ceasor, 29, both of Cornwall were to notify a change of address. THEFT, BREACH

CORNWALL, Ontario – William McDonald, 23, of Cornwall was arrested on Dec. 14, 2017 and charged with theft under $5,000 and breach of two. probation orders and one undertaking for failing to keep the peace. It is alleged while at the Cornwall Square on Dec. 14, 2017 the man selected items from a merchant making no attempt to pay for the items a he left the store.

Police were contacted and located the man a short distance away. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

CORNWALL, Ontario - South Glengarry Mayor Ian McLeod took the position of Warden of the United Counties of SD&G in a ceremony at the United Counties municipal building on Friday, Dec. 15.

McLeod was elected to the position last month

by SD&G United Counties Council after being nominated by South Glengarry Deputy Mayor Frank Prevost which was seconded by North Glengarry Deputy Mayor Jamie Macdonald.

A few former Wardens were in attendance, besides most of the current council, Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell and Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy have both served as Warden and were in attendance.

McDonell and O’Shaughnessy were invited up to remark on the occasion.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy joked about the ecological impact of the council’s choice for Warden.

“They have shown their commitment to the

political environment by recycling a past Warden,” he joked.

Mayor O’Shaughnessy went on to mention that the fact that so many current members of council had previously served as Warden and continued to sit around the table showed the confidence their constituents had in them.

After taking his badge of office, Warden McLeod thanked his family, Mayor O’Shaughnessy, MPP McDonell, immediate past Warden Jim Bancroft and others.

“Just as the sun rises in the East and sets in the West, Ontario’s forefathers came from the East, SD&G, and spread across the land to build the great province of Ontario,” he said.

He went on to emphasize the work that the Counties had ahead of it in 2018.

“SDG is working on a new shared services agreement with Cornwall. The current deal dates back to the 1990s,” he said. McLeod had stated that as the Counties’ closest neighbour it was important that they continue to work with the City of Cornwall.

SG business wins provincial award LANCASTER, Ontario - The Township of South Glengarry is pleased to announce that the Old 4th Hop Yard, a local business owned

by Ron Brennan and Stephanie Jaworski, has received a Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence.

Ron and Stephanie accepted the award at a ceremony held in Casselman on Friday, December 8th, 2017. The award recognizes the innovative contributions of producers, processors, agri-food organizations and rural communities in Ontario.

As Certified Organic hop producers, Ron and Stephanie understand the importance of keeping detailed records. Their operation, Old 4th Hop Yard, located just outside the village of Williamstown, achieved its Organic Certification in 2013; and, with that, came the requirement of thoroughly documenting all activities occurring in the hop yard. The struggle of keeping paperwork up-to-date during the busy growing season lead Brennan, a former Senior Software Quality Assurance Analyst, to search out a digital tool to assist him. As no current farm log met the needs of Certified Organic production, Brennan developed “Hop Logger” - a mobile application designed to efficiently track his field activities. Instead of using pen and paper, Brennan can now use his smartphone to collect data directly from the field. Whether it’s logging soil and water test results, uploading photos from the field or analyzing historical data to better plan for the upcoming season, the time-saving app is a simple, all-in-one data depository.

Designed for all hop producers, regardless of size, Brennan is currently expanding the application to cover the needs of all Certified Organic crop and livestock producers.

North Dundas has experienced another positive year of growth and success. Our population and housing stock is growing and there is a real sense of optimism among business and residents that we are going in the right direction.

We have several new businesses that opened in 2017. In fact, we opened 7 new businesses in just 7 weeks this fall. We introduced new events like our Local Business Expo and our Meet Me on Main Street series. Collectively, they attracted thousands of attendees and we plan to grow them further in 2018. We recently renewed our Community Improvement Plan to revitalize commercial buildings, and it has generated $1 million in facade and interior improvements in just 5 years.

Our Council, staff, Chamber of Commerce, and service clubs work well together and enjoy what we do. We’ve had a great 2017, and we are excited about the momentum being built for another successful year in 2018. In short, more than ever, “We are proud to be from SDG”.

In 2017 the Township of North Glengarry made significant progress in the Maxville water project, in completing key infrastructure and in beautifying our communities.

In March of this year, it was announced that the project to bring a strong water supply to Maxville had received federal and provincial funding.

In the realm of infrastructure, two bridges were completed in 2017 with one done just in time for the New Year.

North Glengarry was also quite successful with the CIP project that has helped to beautify Alexandria and Maxville. North Glengarry was recognized with a provincial award for this work and will be spending at least half of the CIP money on the smaller communities in the township.

In the New Year we hope to complete more work on the water project and we will see new faces around municipal administration.

We have already welcomed a new member to our Treasury Department and while we are saying goodbye to our Chief Administration Officer Dan Gagnon, we will be welcoming a new person to that position in January.

It’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone. As Council enters its last year of its mandate ahead of the 2018 municipal election, we’ve reflected on the many successes that have been achieved here in North Stormont.

The Township continues to invest in its municipal assets as established by the Asset Management Plan. As funding from the Province continues to dwindle each year and the level of service needed to maintain our assets is continually increased, the Township and Council have strived to maintain our assets without significantly increasing the municipal levy. From roads to water and sewer infrastructure to our municipal buildings, the Township continues to work hard to maintain an excellent level of service to its residents.

The Township was busy with many infrastructure improvements. Through 75% Federal and Provincial funding, the Township was able to invest $250,000 into the water and waste water treatment facilities that service our urban areas.

The Crysler Community Centre underwent much needed repairs and improvements thanks to a$90,000 Ontario 150 grant through the Trillium Foundation. These improvements will continue to serve the residents of North Stormont for years to come.

2017 was also a significant year for celebration across Canada.

In North Stormont many events were held to commemorate the last 150 years. Canada Day events in both Moose Creek and Avonmore marked the official 150th Birthday of Canada on July 1st. Finch held a very successful Canada 150 event in August. Avonmore celebrated an even bigger anniversary – the 175th of the founding of the Village of Avonmore. These events continue to remind us of how fortunate we are to live in such a great community.

On behalf of Council and the Administration, we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to sharing more successes and building more memories in the year to come.

South Stormont Our Public works department projects exceeded 2.0 million including work on Anderson road, Morgan, Woodland, Milles Roches and Delaney roads. In addition additional upgrade at the water and wastewater plants. South Stormont continues annual review and replace of public works equipment.

Our Recreation division saw the new Community Park in Ingleside initiated. In 2017 an investment of over $150000 in new playground equipment. Our Arena saw a facelift of the lobby as well as change rooms.

The Fire Service budget saw the completion of a new fire hall in St. Andrews with a construction cost on budget for $1.7 million.

Our building department in 2017 had over 42 new single family homes constructed with permit value of over $20 million.

In 2018 we fully anticipate our growth will continue. The following is an outline of some of the expectations: - Purchase of a new Fire and Rescue Tanker - $495,000.

- Building renovations to Fire and rescue stations, including the demolition of previous St. Andrews Fire Hall - $200,000.

- Public Works loader and pickup truck $167,000.

- Public works construction activities include Fairground and Cedar Street as well as replacement of Fly Creek culvert. Replace Goldfield road culvert. 2.2 kilometers of Anderson Road East, Island Road East, Delaney Road south to County road 18, Sunset Drive on Moulinette Island at a total capital cost of $3.765 We will be investing in several planning projects to develop land for a total of $140,000.

Parks and recreation will continue investing in new Community projects for the total of $290,000.

On the negative side of 2017 we community lost our RO High School.

We expect 2018 will be challenging and exciting. South Stormont is positioned to be successful and look forward to a successful Year. In closing and on behalf of Council, Staff Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

South Dundas 2017 proved to be another busy year in South Dundas. The year began focused on the Upper Canada District School Board’s potential school closures. Following presentations, the UCDSB and the municipality were pleased to be instrumental in a new partnership between Ross Video and Seaway District High School to create a new Tech Centre at the school. This partnership came together during the Board’s PAR review. The new Tech Centre will allow the school to innovate and teach the next generation of students the skills they need to succeed.

Many new businesses opened in South Dundas; including Quesada, Great Finds, Barnful ‘o Goodies, Stonecrop Acres Winery, Max Smoke Shop & Convenience, Great Waterway Hearing Clinic, In the Now Yoga & Wellness, Travel Agent Next Door, Design Farm (website design and marketing) and ID Communications (translation).

Three local businesses were successful recipients of EODP local business funding. Ross Video received $100,000 in funding to expand their business and create a surface mount line to make circuit boards. Most recently Upper Canada Creamery received $20,000 to produce cheese and cheese curds and Homestead Organics received $10,000 to increase storage capacity.

The rink surface at the Morrisburg Arena was replaced with assistance of a $315,000 Trillium “Canada 150 Edition” grant.

Improvements were made to the Iroquois beach area and a new deck installed.

Staff were very busy behind the scenes with the completion and adoption of an economic development strategy; property review; facilities review; and asset management plans for various departments. The municipality together with the Counties are planning improvements to the Morrisburg streetscape along Highways #2 and #31; as well as providing safer pedestrian crossings.

Five outdoor rinks will be open with the help of volunteers in Riverside, Williamsburg, Dundela, Brinston and Iroquois.

During budget deliberations a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) to assist business owners improve their locations through grants/loans will be brought forward. Road work will include the completion of Coons Road, Pigeon Island Road, Ottawa Street sidewalk, Municipal Centre parking lot and other projects yet to be approved through the budget process.

2018 promises to be another busy and great year for South Dundas.

Although it often seemed like Mother Nature was working against us in 2017, the Township of South Glengarry had a very active and productive year. More than 235 Building Permits were issued, with a collective construction value of more than $20,000,000 and 18.7 kilometers of Township roadway were either surfaced or resurfaced, bringing this total to more than 100 kilometers over the last 5 years.

The Township’s first salt dome was constructed on Airport Road, as was a new Fire Hall in Glen Walter, while plans for a new Fire Hall in Williamstown were initiated. The lion’s share of a beautification project at Ken Barton Park in Martintown was also completed and will be finalized in 2018.

In Lancaster, the Township and the Claude Nunney V. C. Memorial Legion Branch 544 partnered to double the size of their facility, something that has dramatically increased its capacity and use. The Water Treatment Plant at Redwood Estates was rehabilitated and of course, no one will forget the unwavering collective victory by our residents, students and municipal government against the Upper Canada District School Board’s plan to close Char-Lan District High School. Thank you to everyone who participated in the Save Char-Lan campaign.

At the Char-Lan Arena we installed new retractable doors in the main entrance, replaced arena board glass, installed and implemented electronic information terminals and preferred seating for seniors in the lobby. The Township continues to work collectively with neighboring municipalities on several fronts.

The first being the development of the “Glengarry Heritage Tour Maps” with the Township of North Glengarry, an effort that will undoubtedly grow our tourism industry in the future. In addition, we continue to work closely with the City of Cornwall to establish a mechanism whereby businesses located along Boundary Road would be able to secure municipal water services from the City. The second was a cooperative effort between the City, the Township and Cornwall and the Counties Community Futures to undertake a Business Plan and Opportunities Analysis for the Cornwall Regional Airport. This document will lay the foundation for how the Airport will be operated and developed moving forward.

The counties had a very successful year in 2017. The highlight was the construction of the first three roundabout in SDG. Our roads department placed 72,000 tonnes of asphalt last year throughout SDG. County Road 4 was reconstructed complete with the final leg of the bike path on the waterfront trail. The design work was completed for all the bridge rehabilitation that will be completed in 2018.

The draft Official Plan was completed and submitted to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs for their approval. This was a major accomplishment from our planning department.

Our corporate group have reviewed our corporate structure and made recommendations to bring more efficiencies to our governance. This year we will be creating an newly structured IT department which will be able to provide a greater assistance to the lower tier municipalities, standardize much of our software and increase the security to the entire system.

Overall 2017 was a very productive year on all fronts and 2018 will be an exciting year.

To the residents of South Glengarry and all of SDG; I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a happy prosperous New Year.

YEAR IN REVIEW On behalf of my colleagues on City Council, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are very fortunate to live in such a friendly and generous community.

The year 2017 was a positive one for the City. The ongoing transformation continues in all areas of our community. From the Cotton Mill District to Brookdale Avenue to the Cornwall Business Park, each part of the City is seeing new investment and development. Over 800 building permits were issued this year with a total value in excess of $33 million. We hope to see progress in a number of areas in 2018, including the development of an arts and culture centre and continuing to seek out post-secondary opportunities at the university level for our youth in Cornwall.

We look forward to continued success in 2018 however it will not come without challenges. We will be faced with many challenges with regards to securing capital funding for our infrastructure for both wastewater and tangible assets like our roads and buildings. Difficult decisions will need to be made with respect to balancing the need to invest in our infrastructure while also being mindful of our residents’ ability to pay.

As we move into 2018, I am committed to continuing to work hard on your behalf, and ensure that the values of those in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry are heard. I will continue to be your voice, and echo your concerns in Ottawa. I will continue to hold the Government to account and demand responsible governance.

Our beautiful country just celebrated its 150th birthday, and as Canadians, we have the skills, community spirit, generosity, and compassion to build an even greater future. The year 2018 will bring many changes to Ontarians’ daily lives.

For instance, as Bill 148 comes into force and the minimum wage increases, we can expect businesses and employees to adapt to the new realities of Ontario’s labour market. Electricity bills will start to creep up again, although temporarily tied to inflation for four years through the Fair Hydro Plan, and the provincial election scheduled for June 7th will bring us a campaign that promises to be

hard-fought by all parties. The ongoing review of the Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines and the rural education funding formula might lay the foundations upon which we can build a better rural public education delivery model, despite the heart-wrenching closure of three public schools in SDSG during 2017.

Last year was proof that community advocacy can achieve results; school boards reduced the number of planned closures, Cornwall got back its Functional Assessment Centre, new home warranties were reformed, and people attending special events are anticipating access to reduced ticket prices as action was taken against automated ticket-buying bots, just to name a few. We can and should continue to push for a more prosperous society in 2018,

with more opportunities for our youth and better health care for ourselves and our loved ones. There will be many opportunities for engagement throughout the year, from the Pre-Budget Consultations to the election campaign and beyond. I look forward to supporting our community members, businesses, and organizations as they bring forward their ideas and efforts to make Ontario the best place to live, raise a family, and call home.

As 2017 comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018.

This is the most disgusting and laughable news coming from the world’s second most populous country.

The initial report from New Delhi said right wing Hindu activists attacked Catholic carol singers in a Madhya Pradesh rural community and set a priest’s car ablaze.

Police said 32 people were detained for trying to convert people to Christianity.

The Catholics were getting ready for Christmas and a group of students training to become priests were singing Christmas carols.

This news comes at a time when India’s Christian minority have been sounding the alarms over a recent attack on churches and members of the faith, blaming the violence on Hindu hardliners, who they say have become emboldened since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right wing government swept to power in 2014.

Singing of Christmas carols has been a part of the Christmas season in Madhya Pradesh’s Salna district for more than three decades.

The right-wing groups accused churches and missionaries of targeting poor communities with

financial incentives in a bid to convert them to Christianity.

In recent years, when Modi was not in power at the national level, there have been much violence and many deaths arising from clashes between Hindus and Muslims.

Five Indian states, including Madhya Pradesh, have laws requiring individuals to get permission from government officials before they can convert to another faith.

Inducing an illegal conversion can mean a jail term of up to one year.

India has a lot to learn from progressive countries like Canada and other Western nations where freedom of worship is allowed by law.

Former Citizen of the Year passes away Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

On Dec. 16, 2017 Nick Haramis, a long-time pillar of the Cornwall community passed away, he was 89.

For decades, Haramis was involved in nonprofit and charitable organizations in Cornwall and the surrounding counties.

Haramis served as president of the Cornwall chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and was involved in supporting organizations such as the Girl Guides, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, the Cornwall Community Hospital, the United Way and many more.

In 2011, Nick Haramis and his wife Marion were recognized with the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award.

Nick and Marion Haramis were one of only two couples who have ever been jointly recognized as Citizens of the Year.

“They have a very large family and were very family oriented,” said Lezlie Strasser, Executive Director of the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce.

“They were selfless people who truly believed in giving back to the community.”

Nick Haramis is survived by his wife Marion, his children Susan McIntosh (Ross), Judy Bailey (Norman), Nicholas Jr. (Joyce), Michael (Lynne),

Nancy Near (John), Peggy Haramis (Randy Pitts), Cathy Malyon (Jim), Rudy (Karen), Patrick (JoAnne), Harry (Alice), and 29 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall on Friday Dec. 29 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.

The Mass of the Resurrection with Commendation and Farewell will be celebrated in St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, 434 Second Street, West, Cornwall, on Saturday Dec. 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.

The Rite of Committal at a later date in St. Andrew’s Parish Cemetery. If so desired

Two new businesses added to the Cornwall Innovation Centre CORNWALL, Ontario - Following its fifth Venture Demo Day on Dec. 13, 2017, the Cornwall Innovation Centre is pleased to announce that two new ventures have been invited to join the Lead To Win business accelerator program.

“The CIC continues to build its roster of innovative companies,” said Kelly Bergeron, Executive Director. “We are excited to welcome Ioffe Biotechnologies and Rent Frock Repeat to our fray and look forward to helping them grow their companies.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Rachel’s Kids House of Hope is starting a new program for those who want to offer support, but cannot commit a lot of time.

Their 100 Souls program will be an exclusive club limited to 100 people. The club will meet for one hour, four times a year and each member is expected to contribute $100 at each meeting.

Melanie Gravel-Casey of Rachel’s Kids House of Hope says that the limited space is filling up fast with 25 people already signed up.

“It is a great opportunity to learn about

where your money is being invested,” she said.

“It is a minimal commitment and investment.”

All money donated through the program will stay in the community.

Gillian Oxley-Harper is one participant in the 100 Souls program.

“I was on the board of Rachel’s Kids for almost 10 years and vice-chair for almost eight, eventually, I had to step away, but have always wanted to stay involved,” she said. “Rachel’s Kids is a great charity and I believe so strongly in what they do. It is a minimal amount to invest while still being able to make a significant impact.”

The New Year is just days away and with it will come deliberations of the 2018 budget for the City of Cornwall as well as the start of the election season.

Come November 2018 there will be a new Council at the table at City Hall. I can’t say for sure yet who will be sitting on that council, or who will be at the head of it. At the moment we likely have two candidates running for the top job, Councillor David Murphy and incumbent Leslie O’Shaughnessy.

I will say though, that before either candidate starts campaigning, I hope they take care of the matter at hand first, namely the 2018 budget.

At a special meeting on Monday, Dec. 18, Council passed their first budget hurtle, with difficulty. After five tries, they were able to pass the water and sewer budget with a 6.25 percent increase. This represents an increase of roughly $5 per household and will go to replace aging watermains however, there are concerns that this rate is not enough to keep up with the rate of decay.

It was Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy who brought forth the motion for a 6.25 percent increase after a vote on a 7.65 percent increase failed.

The Mayor said that the difference would be made up through grant funding and by aggressively pursuing funding from senior levels of government.

In an interview with another local media outlet, the Mayor claimed that he did not move for a lower rate with the 2018 election in mind.

I’m going to give the Mayor the benefit of the doubt on this one and take him at his word that his decision was made by thinking about what was best for the budget and not what was best for re-election.

For too long Cornwall Council has been ignoring their responsibility to set a responsible tax rate. Last year the City started with a potential residential tax rate of 4 percent, and eventually that was whittled down to 1.76 percent. At the time, the Mayor stated that he felt that 1.76 percent was too low to meet the City’s needs.

Councillor Elaine MacDonald said that taxes should not be seen as a burden and she is cor-

rect if those taxes are spent responsibly.

If grants and senior levels of funding for Cornwall’s watermain system do not materialize, then a low tax rate would be irresponsible.

Without the tax money needed to maintain infrastructure and services, a greater burden

will be passed down to the Cornwall community when those things fail.

Ignoring political considerations and setting a responsible budget for 2018 will be a true test for Cornwall City Council in the New Year.

before us and as a developmental league, any single person that has seen a Nationals game can tell you it’s the best hockey this city has seen in ages.

But you wouldn’t know that because you don’t support hockey in this city. No one, besides a small percentage of people, does. So, I ask, what is your true excuse? It can’t be our on-ice product, as we sit first in the league. It sure as heck can’t be our off-ice product as in just one year we have been involved with more than 30 different organizations, raised thousands of dollars for charity, been involved in both elementary and high school initiatives and helped anyone who has asked for it. We have thrown ourselves at this city, passionately and furiously, and unfortunately, citizens of this town have not done the same.

It is no longer enough to tell me that “our marketing has been great”. It is no longer enough to say that “those Nationals

are everywhere, they really give back to this community so much”. It is no longer enough to see what we are doing and sit back and hope that other people will support the team. It is now up to each individual in this city to make a decision as to the importance of hockey in our town.

So, I ask again. What is your excuse? If you don’t have a valid one then I suggest you make your way to the Cornwall Civic Complex and start supporting a team that can’t continue to sit back and pray that our town’s mentality will change. If you want Cornwall to be respectfully thought of as hockey town then a shift must happen and you, as one person reading this editorial, can be part of that movement. In this case one person can make a difference, will that person be you?

Dear Editor, There are still so many people in this city that claim Cornwall as a central hub for hockey and all of its related activities, calling our community of 47,000 people a hockey town. I was one of them for a long while, as I knew Cornwall from ice-level. I played girls’ hockey my whole life; I was a proud Cornwall Typhoon and represented our city for years. I also remember the fun I had at Aces games when I was just a kid and I can attest that high school wouldn’t have been as fun without Thursday night Colts games.

But things have shifted and since returning home just two years ago, it is clear that Cornwall is no longer a hockey town. The Royals are long gone but remain an ever-present ghost, convincing people that this city is still capable of housing higher caliber hockey. It is not.

There are whines and cries that if we had an OHL team or AHL team more people would

support hockey but we, as a collective, have proven years ago that this is not the case. In a city of almost 50,000 people there is a small pocket of under 1000 people that really truly give a damn about supporting hockey in this city.

Cornwall currently has an FHL team, the Cornwall Nationals, to watch and support and I’m often left scratching my head wondering why our average attendance sits at below 1000, with some games bringing in only 500 fans. In case you didn’t know, the Federal Hockey League is a professional minor A team that feeds into the ECHL, which feeds the AHL. The Cornwall Nationals are not “the new River Kings”. The Cornwall Nationals are not “staged fighting like the River Kings”. The Cornwall Nationals are not “a Semi-Pro team like the River Kings”. The Cornwall Nationals are in no way, shape or form associated with the previous team that resided in the Complex

“The Joys and Rewards of a Paper Carrier” Claude McIntosh ~ Mac’s Musings Several years ago, probably eight or 10, a reader visited me at The Standard-Freeholder where I was employed as the associate editor with an essay her recently deceased husband had penned. If memory serves me right, it was around Christmas when the essay was dropped off.

It was called “The Joys and Rewards of a Paper Carrier”. It was about her late husband’s experience as a young Standard-Freeholder carrier. She wondered if I would be interested in doing something on the essay, which I said I would do. Unfortunately, I misplaced the letter which contained her name and phone number, neither of which I could recall.

Eureka. The other day while combing through a large file of bits and pieces - clippings and other things - I found the letter.

The essay was written by Orlando Grieco who grew up in east Cornwall and toiled as a Standard-Freeholder carrier for nine years, 19451954, five of those years when he was in high school. He gave up the route when he graduated from Grade 13 and left for university.

He had 268 customers in an area that stretched from Marlborough, west on Fifth to Pitt with deliveries on Amelia, Adolphus and Gloucester. The last customer on the sprawling route was the Whitham Lawn Bowling Club. Six days a week, through all kinds of weather, he faithfully delivered the paper, never missing a day.

His route was the third largest in the city.

Only Herbert Marshall (290) and Bernie Levere

(275) delivered to more customers. Close behind Orlando was Richard Merizzi who also had a 200-plus-customer route.

This was a time when a paper route was a much sought after job for school kids. Some of the other after-school jobs were packing groceries at a super market or delivering groceries for the corner store using the “company wheels”, a bicycle with a large basket and balloon tires.

Orlando pointed out that in 1947 the paper cost three cents. In 1948 the single issue price went up to four cents, which meant collecting 24 cents on Thursday nights when it took a lot longer to cover the route.

“I felt that everybody was going to give me a quarter (a one cent tip) and I would be on my way to becoming a rich man,” he wrote.

Not so.

His first customer gave him a quarter then asked, “Where’s my penny change?”

“I soon learned that this customer wasn’t the only one who wanted the penny back,” he noted.

Of course, the now extinct penny had some buying power in those days.

“A penny could buy a stick of Bubble Gum or a bag of peanuts. Two cents made up the 12 cents needed to go to the Saturday morning show at the Palace or Capitol Theatres. I still pick up a penny when I see one on the sidewalk,” he wrote.

During his nine years of passing the daily newspaper Christmas landed on a Friday a few times, which meant collection night was on Christmas Eve, when folks were in a merrier and more generous mood.

And so it was. He came home with around

Many years later Orlando asked the young girl delivering his paper how many customers she had. She told him a lot ... a lot being 28 customers.

“I told her that when I delivered the paper I had 268 customers,” he wrote. “I could almost read her mind ... ‘The old man must be from Mars.’“ That paper route and the money earned from delivering to 268 customers for nine years enabled Orlando to save enough money to pay for his first year at McGill University and part of his second year. He would graduate in 1958 with a chemical engineering degree.

When was the last time anybody heard of a high school kid saving enough money from a paper route to pay for one-and-a-half years of university?

But Orlando said that the paper route did more than help pay for his university education.

“I also learned about responsibility, money management, self discipline and respect for my elders,” he wrote.

And to that we say, “Amen!”

Campbell had hardwood for sale at $3 a cord, delivered. .... William Ray was re-elected trustee for S.S. No. 4, Cornwall. ... The fire brigade answered six alarms in a six-hour period, five were to deal with chimney fires. ...

Two city men convicted of stealing belting from the Howard Smith Paper Mill property were sentenced to three months in jail. The men claimed that they found the belting while looking through the mill dump and thought it had been discarded. However, witnesses from the mill testified that it wasn’t discarded. The two men said they planned on selling the belting to farmers. Total value of the belting was $35. Magistrate P.C. Bergeron said the stiff sentence was to discourage others from trespassing on mill property.

In England the wealthy would have splendid meals on Christmas Day. Often so much food had been prepared there would be a considerable amount left over. The wealthy, recognizing the poor could benefit from this left-over food, boxed it and distributed it the day after Christmas Day - hence ‘Boxing Day’. Boxes of food were freely given to those in need. Must we really misuse this Christian/historical event in order to make even more money for box store investors and sales outlets?

Even in education there is a movement, by Ontario’s Elementary Teachers’ Federation, to try and rewrite history. Their efforts come in attempting to have the names of certain past

politicians removed from elementary schools.

Absolute nonsense. Removing a name does not change history and, furthermore, who is to judge what is right and what is wrong? Did any one politician ever do only bad or good things?

We should think deeply before jumping on any band wagon committing support to many of the unfortunate abuses of our religious backgrounds and our history. Canada, despite its modern day multi-cultural image, started out [after its native beginnings] as a Christian country. I feel certain the other religious sectors of our multi-cultural society would not begrudge our historical connections for we do not deny their right to religious identity. What will come next, a suggestion we scrap Christmas?

Political correctness is really becoming a nonsense thing just satisfying a few folk seeking attention and having too much spare time on their hands. There is, however, something of which we should all be aware and be prepared to consider. It is historical/religious correctness.

Big box stores, and some grocery stores, are seeking ever more sales and appear to have no conscience when abusing our history or our Christian religion.

One case in point would be the hot cross buns on sale in grocery stores, available at several times throughout the year. There is nothing wrong with making and selling something

resembling a hot cross bun but, please, give it another name! The history of this delicacy is that it goes on sale in Christian countries as part of the Easter celebration. Traditionally eaten warm on Good Friday, the cross represents the cross upon which Christ died and the spices inside remind Christians of the spices put on his body.

Believers or not we should continue to honour the historical/religious tradition.

Another example is the matter of misusing the expression ‘Boxing Day’. Some sales outlets have even stretched ‘Boxing day’ into ‘Boxing Week’. Might I remind these money grabbing sales outlets there is a Christian/historical basis for ‘Boxing Day’ and, again, the concept should not be abused. From where did the term ‘Boxing

CORNWALL, Ontario - Team Cornwall held their annual Year in Review retrospective at Galaxy Cinemas on Thursday, Dec. 14.

“The Year in Review let’s us recognize the many achievements in our community,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy in his address to the crowd. “It is truly an exciting period in Cornwall’s history. It seems like every part of the City is seeing investment.” Bob Peters, the City of Cornwall’s Division Manager for the Economic Development Department gave an outline of some of the growth the City has experienced in 2017 including $33 million in building permits. The City also invested $22 million in infrastructure in 2017, which lead to the completion of some significant road projects

such as the Marleau/ McConnell intersection and Brookdale Ave. The event also highlighted successful events, businesses and other features that took place in the community over the past year. These included the new World of Whiskey show that premiered at the Nav Centre, the visit by the Canada C3 science vessel that was touring the nation as a part of the Canada 150 celebrations and hometown hero Tony Luis fighting and winning three times in Cornwall. Important benchmarks of success celebrated by local businesses and institutions included important anniversaries for Pommier Jewellers (80 years), St. Lawrence College (50 years), Farm Boy (35 years) and many others.

The Ontario Power Generation centre in Cornwall opened a new control room this year,

which manages power generation at sites throughout Eastern Ontario. The Cornwall Community Hospital hired 20 new doctors and 2 midwives.

The Nav Centre also welcomed 35, 000 guests this year, has 500 employees and also gained national attention when it hosted Haitian asylum seekers over the summer.

Peters remarked that the Nav Centre impressed federal agencies involved with this summer’s crisis.

“I know that members of the military said that Cornwall did in days what they sometimes did in months,” he said.

At the end of the event, several Cornwall businesses and organizations formed a bazaar in the Galaxy lobby including Heart of the City, Rurban Brewing and the United Way of SD&G.

Even when wet, they should withstand scrubbing without falling apart. Towels should separate cleanly at their perforations; otherwise, you may be left holding either a torn sheet or more sheets than you need. Generally, the two-ply towels detach more evenly than the one-ply towels. Paper towels with short, weakly anchored fibers tend to shed lint, a particular problem when you clean a mirror or window.

Soft towels are usually more absorbent, but they may not hold up as well during scrubbing. My recommendation is to use the economical brands for everyday chores and keep on hand a roll of the strong and absorbent, relatively expensive towels for picking up large spills or cleaning up spills on carpets, they are more absorbent.

Fifth times the charm: Council passes water & sewer budget

CORNWALL, Ontario - After five votes, Cornwall City Council passed the water and sewer budget for 2018 on Monday, Dec. 18.

Council settled on a 6.25 percent increase after rejecting a 7.65 percent increase and three other motions the week prior.

Administration suggested the increase to keep up with the aging watermains in the city.

There is 69km of watermains that need to be replaced at a cost upwards of $40 million.

Councillor Claude McIntosh said it reminded him of an old commercial of paying more now or paying more later.

“The backlog is the current number for catching up with what’s outstanding, but for every year we don’t take care of the backlog more infrastructure falls into need of repair and

therefore ads to the backlog,” said General Manager for Infrastructure John St. Marseille.

“We’re just barely keeping up.”

The motion for a 7.65 percent in the water and sewer budget failed as Councillors Maurice Dupelle, Mark MacDonald, Andre Rivette, Justin Towndale, David Murphy and Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy all voted against.

Councillor Elaine MacDonald, who was in favour of the 7.65 percent increase expressed her frustration saying that she had no problem with a difference of opinion, but would at least like an explanation.

“I see no votes with no explanation,” she said.

After the failed vote, Mayor O’Shaughnessy stepped down from the chair to advocate for an increase of 6.25 percent with $850, 000 coming from the capital projects budget to give council “breathing room” in 2018.

The Mayor argued that he believed that the

City could apply for more grants in 2018 and vigorously pursue funding from senior levels of government.

“We just accept the fact that they say no,” he said.

The 6.25 percent wound up passing with unanimous support from Council, despite reservations from some councillors.

“When we look at 9 percent next year we will know why we are looking at 9 percent,” said Councillor Elaine MacDonald. “I’m willing to compromise and do something that’s not good enough to do something worse and going lower.”

MacDonald was referring to the belief that unless the increase this year was adequate, Council would be looking at a bigger increase in 2018 rather than a lower one.

Councillor Bernadette Clement said she respectfully rejected the Mayor’s proposal

because in her view, it was not balanced.

“The balance I see is something spread over a number of years, your concept is that we will see a spike and to me that isn’t balance,” she explained.

In total, the increase of 6.25 percent equals out to a roughly $5 increase on water bills.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The seventh annual Freezin for a Reason Zumba Carolling event took place on Friday, Dec. 15.

Lead by Christal Bowen of Zumba with Christal lead the 50 carollers through the Sunrise Acres area of Cornwall with help from volunteers like DJ Stacey McPhail and Nathan Carr, who recorded the event on Facebook Live.

Bowen said that the support they received from the community in the area was overwhelming.

“One older gentlemen drove up to us and I thought he was going to ask us to turn the music down, but he said “hey, you forgot my house” and by the time we got to his place his wife and daughter were in the driveway dancing with us,” Bowen said.

The event ran from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and the event collected $1,500 in cash.
