CORNWALL, Ontario - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that attacks the muscles of the body and gradually robs those afflicted with it of their mobility and strength.

Mike Labelle of Cornwall was diagnosed with ALS on Oct. 31 of 2017. His family and the community around him are coming together to make sure that he does not face this terrible disease alone and without support.

A fundraiser will be held in support of Mike Labelle on Feb. 24 at the Army Navy Air Force Club from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The event will feature a 50/50 draw, karaoke and a silent auction which includes two season tickets to see the Cornwall Colts, art from local artists, and donations from Dubuc Eye Care and Pommier Jewellers. Additionally, TLC Entertainment have offered to volunteer their

services for the evening as hosts and will be providing the music as well Donations will be accepted at the door.

Labelle’s sister-in-law Joanne Ruest helped to organize the event and said that the event started out as a joint idea within the family to get help and that she was overwhelmed by how often the event was shared through Facebook.

“The family had to do something, we had to try and help,” her daughter Courtney Grant said. “We are very close knit family and its imperative in situations like this that family come together and help each other.”

The event is being organized by Joanne and Courtney with help from her brother Jeff and Mike’s daughter Ayla.

Labelle, 51, was born and raised in Cornwall and worked as a machinist for 30 years. He says he has received some support from the ALS Society Branch in Ottawa and from the organizers of the

It has not been an easy 33 years for Randy Sauve with a wide variety challenges from construction to ice storms.

“One of the biggest challenges was the reconstruction of the storefront and the deconstruction of the mall,” said Sauve.

local ALS walk, like Melissa Ferguson. Labelle’s family hopes to help form a local support group for people suffering from ALS in Cornwall and SD&G. Labelle said that his disease leaves him sore, in pain, fatigued and depressed, but that he greatly appreciates the support he has received from his family and the community.

“The support that is coming together is phenomenal,” he said. “It really touches the heart.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall has a new Hall of Fame to honour their local artists. The Centre for the Arts Collective has raised money to create a digital Arts Hall of Fame. The Arts Hall of Fame will be stored on Blu-Ray discs and will be displayed on a 55� flat screen television donated by Best Buy in Cornwall.

A breakfast will be taking place at the Cornwall Legion at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13 to celebrate the creation of the new hall of fame and to honour the inaugural inductees. The first class of the Cornwall Arts Hall of Fame includes the following five people, Edith H. Stiles, Tom Thompson, Ron Sullivan, Lionel Tessier and Andy Trasuk.

The Cornwall Centre for the Arts Collective has

received support from OBO Studios, The Seeker and Focus Art. Focus Art provided some of the artwork that will be displayed as a part of the Hall of Fame presentation.

Another member of the Centre for the Arts Collective explained that the breakfast on Feb. 13 and the Hall of Fame are just the beginning and the Collective are planning to raise $50, 000 over five years to fund a new arts centre in Cornwall.

The Feb. 13 breakfast will include a raffle for eight pieces of art that have been donated to the cause.

Tickets are $15 each and are available at the Benson Centre and Scotiabank Cornwall.

Scotiabank is matching the funds raised by the breakfast up to $2,000 and the local branch will be sending volunteers to the breakfast.

During the late 50s, a tall man over six feet in height moved from his hometown, Mattawa, Ontario, to Cornwall. He came to our city looking for work, and would assist in constructing Cornwall’s Seaway International Bridge.

The construction of Cornwall’s first bridge ended up in tragedy. On September 6, 1898, pier #2 plunged into the St. Lawrence River, taking two spans of a nearly completed bridge with it.

Fifteen workers lost their lives in this catastrophe, six of whom are buried in St. Columban’s and Woodlawn Cemetery. What I found most touching, was the fellowship shown among the surviving workers. These men, living in a time when money was scarce, pitched in for the burial of their co-workers. Many of the deceased hailed

from far away and would not have had families with funds to pay for their funerals or a tombstone. This was truly an act of great comradery.

Ten years later, a similar catastrophe would strike the banks of the St. Lawrence River. On June 23, 1908, the South bank of the canal gave out about 500 feet west of Lock 18. The bridges “swing span pier” tipped over, bringing yet another Cornwall bridge down to the ground.

There were no deaths, but two were injured in the destruction.

One of Cornwall’s most memorable bridges, The Roosevelt Swing Bridge, officially opened on June 30, 1934. The opening ceremony took place on the south side of Cornwall Island, south of the Canadian Customs House. The opening of this bridge was a major event, with many prominent figures invited to attend the ceremony. In early June 1934, Sir Robert Borden, a Canadian lawyer, politician, and the eighth Prime Minister of forced to decline due to prior arrangements. The Canada, sent a formal reply to an invitation he Roosevelt Swing Bridge is one of the bridges received from Mayor Aaron Horovitz. He was most spoken about, because the center of the bridge would pivot to allow ships to pass through the Cornwall Canal. Not long after the bridge officially opened, it was planked over and opened to automobile traffic.

In 1962, Cornwall would see a new bridge lining the sky for the next fifty-two years.

Although some considered it to be an eyesore, I believe it was a Cornwall icon. The North Channel Bridge that linked together Cornwall and Cornwall Island, opened to traffic on July 3, 1962.

This bridge, a high level structure, measured 1625 meters long, 8.2 meters wide, and was 36.6 metres above the canal below it.

Leaving Mattawa behind, Archie Latour needed a place to stay while he worked on Cornwall’s new bridge. He rented a room from Rolande Séguin at 219 Sydney Street, which, at that time, operated as a boarding house. Travelling away from home to look for work resulted in a construction worker finding the love of his life. The couple would later have five children, and as the years passed by, they would be blessed with seven grandchildren... One of whom, was me.

To assist the grad get that first job in their field of study, the program offers a wage subsidy as an incentive for employers to take a chance on a new employee.

Jessica Seguin graduated into the field of Social Services in 2014 from St. Lawrence College.

“The program is really fantastic because it provides a subsidy for your wage,” she said. “The biggest thing about finding a job is getting an employer to take a chance on you. The subsidy gives employers an incentive to take a chance on you, so you can show them your skills.”

Jessica currently works two jobs. One at the Boys and Girls Club where she helps facilitate their after-school programs including physical activity, health and wellness and nutrition.

She also works as an Education Assistant at Immaculate Conception Catholic School.

According to information from the EOTB, there are 500 health and social services business enterprises operating in SD&G and as of 2011 605 people work as Social and Community Service Workers in SD&G. The EOTB is currently looking for more post-secondary graduates from a variety of educational backgrounds for their job placement program. They are also searching for employers interested in hiring recent graduates.

Graduates looking to participate in the program can get a referral from Job Zone and employers can apply directly through the EOTB.

Help with the hunt

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) and the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) are involved in discussions to further their respective commitments to students in the Cornwall area.

Staff from both school boards are exploring future needs that each school district have for offering programs within the City of Cornwall. The Cornwall community will know that both school boards have shared a common site located at 1500 Cumberland Street that is the current St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School, and was the former General Vanier Secondary School. Since the 1990s, this site has been the location of St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School (CDSBEO), as well as the primary program site for the TR Leger School for Adult, Alternative and Continuing Education (UCDSB).

Two key developments have sparked interest in both boards discussing their future interests in sites to

support programing. In June 2017, the Upper Canada District School Board received word that the Ministry of Education would fund the building of a new public high school for Cornwall, committing $39 million for this project. On January 31, 2018, the CDSBEO received word that the Ministry of Education would fund the acquisition of the former General Vanier Secondary School from the UCDSB to accommodate a new consolidated JK-6 Catholic school for Sacred Heart/St. Columban’s as well as a grade 7 and 8 program for St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School, taking in all grade 7 and 8 students from Bishop Macdonell, St. Anne, and the consolidated Sacred Heart/St. Columban’s Catholic Schools.

Through their respective processes, both boards have identified surplus school property that form a focus for board-to-board discussions. For the UCDSB, the General Vanier site is currently declared as a property surplus to the board’s future needs.

Rough winter delays deliveries for Ad Bag Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL & THE UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario – The Ad Bag is ever popular in Cornwall and the surrounding counties of SD&G. Every week it delivers local flyers, coupons and your Cornwall Seaway News to 38,985 homes.

The winter weather has been rough on the Ad Bag’s carriers says Ad Bag General Manager Doug Delage.

Delage explained to Seaway News that he currently has roughly 30 carriers covering around 65 delivery zones across Cornwall and the United

Counties. He says that in recent weeks, a few of his carriers have long days but the delivery is getting done.

In the ice storm Ad Bag carriers have to watch there step so closely as they do not want to get injured so it takes a little longer to get done.

Even without ice conditions, delivery times take longer in the winter. Delage explained that the Riverdale area of Cornwall is split into two delivery zones. One zone takes eight hours to complete the delivery route.

Delage and the Ad Bag are taking steps to attract new carriers, including restructuring their pay formula to make it a more lucrative gig. Delage

explained however, that the customer service aspect of being a carrier can be challenging.

“People get frustrated when the bag is late, and some people are super nice and totally understand the situation,” he said.

Delage said however, that some who receive the Ad Bag yell at the carriers for things that are often out of their control.

“We try to explain that the carriers are humans and not robots,” said Delage.

Earlier this winter during a storm, the truck that delivers the Ad Bag to the distribution centre from the printer was delayed by a storm, so the Ad Bag was a half day late.

Winterspiel VII results Marc Benoit, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Curling Club wrapped up its Winterspiel VII tournament this Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, in Cornwall, ON. The final day concluded a 5 day span of curling competition right here in town, with competitors in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Saturday night’s finals saw Jonathon King beat out John Wright for the men’s title. For the women’s competition, Mitch Baker won against Jen Baker. The men’s event was sponsored by Cornwall Dental Arts, while the

women’s division was sponsored by Pommier Jewellers.

Following the final matchup, around 140 participants and fans joined together to chow down Italian style, with a meal provided by volunteers and sponsors, complete with Italian inspired musical performances.

In the men’s division, Neal MacLean beat out Alex MacDougall for the B title. Ron Leroux won against Jim Lamoureux for the C title. Dennis Henderson won the D title against Charles Wert. The women’s B winner was Janis Sobering against Luce Lalonde, while the C winner was Donna Cain-Spagnola beating Susan Fort.

The Cornwall Classics 60+ hockey team participated in two 60+ tournaments in the month of January. On Jan. 4-6 they played in Stittsville. They went undefeated in three round robin games and lost in the final in an double overtime shootout. Guy Corriveau was solid in nets all weekend. On Jan. 26-28 they played in Mont Tremblant. They were undefeated in three round robin games and won the gold medal final in a three shot overtime shootout. Chris Nicholl saved all three overtime shots and was solid in nets.

Nats snap skid with home-ice victory CORNWALL, Ontario - A couple of Federal Hockey League streaks were snapped on Saturday night at the Civic Complex. The Nationals skated to a 7-3 victory over the rival Watertown Wolves in front of 502 fans.

Cornwall (16-11-0-0-2) came into the contest on a four-game losing streak, while Watertown had won three straight. Captain Ahmed Mahfouz led the Nationals with a fourpoint night.

of the season for the Nationals, scored on his very first shift back. Graham tapped a loose puck in the crease past Watertown goaltender Cody Karpinski just 60 seconds into the contest.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Kanata scored 4 goals in under 6 minutes to pull out a 4-3 comeback victory over the Colts at the Ed Lumley Arena Thursday night.

La CNS publie une vidéo sur le Sommet étudiant du Saint-Laurent Communiqué de presse de la CNS Une première dans l’Est de l’Ontario – La Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) a été l’hôte d’une conférence de trois jours en octobre dernier, réunissant des étudiants qui ont pu approfondir leurs connaissances sur les défis environnementaux grandissants.

Le Sommet étudiant du fleuve Saint-Laurent, le premier du genre, a rassemblé près de 100 élèves du secondaire désirant en apprendre davantage sur leur environnement, bénéficier de l’expérience pratique pour comprendre les enjeux locaux et s’unir pour trouver des solutions possibles à des problèmes comme le manque d’habitat naturel arboré le long des cours d’eau.

Une vidéo a récemment été partagée par l’Office de protection de la nature, qui souligne certaines des activités du Sommet, notamment : l’enlèvement des espèces envahissantes, une croisière sur le fleuve Saint-Laurent, un cours délivrant une certification en leadership et des ateliers sur la qualité de l’eau. « Nous espérons que cette vidéo puisse démontrer le besoin d’éducation sur la protection et la bonne gestion des ressources naturelles

dans l’Est de l’Ontario, et inciter les jeunes à relever les défis environnementaux dans leurs propres collectivités », explique John Mesman, chef d’équipe, Communications et sensibilisation.

M. Mesman ajoute également que « ce partenariat est important ». Le Bureau régional pour les Grands Lacs du ministère de l’Environnement et de l’Action en matière de changement climatique a apporté son soutien et a mis l’accent sur l’utilisation de l’écosystème des Grands Lacs et du Saint-Laurent comme contexte d’apprentissage. « Les ressources en eau du fleuve SaintLaurent proviennent de plans d’eau beaucoup plus en amont, comme le lac Ontario.

Comprendre que - ce qui se passe en amont, coulera en aval - était un message important à moyens d’accroître la valeur de la couverture emporter. » Les élèves ont aussi appris le lien entre les riveraine dans la région.

Le Sommet a été conçu pour les étudiants écosystèmes et les bassins versants et ils ont utilisé leurs nouvelles connaissances pour pré- inscrits aux programmes de Majeure haute spécialisation dans trois commissions scolaires parsenter des idées de projets et de programmes.

Cornwall a hockey town?

Cornwall is a little more than a month out from being featured as a part of Rogers Hometown Hockey which is happening from March 17 to the 18. The event promises to feature NHL alumni, local celebrities and an outdoor viewing of an NHL game. Cornwall is one of 24 communities selected to be a part of Hometown Hockey.

This brings back an important question that was raised several weeks ago that I never really addressed. Is Cornwall a hockey town?

The Cornwall Nationals recently held their Cornwall Royals Night in honour of Cornwall’s old QMJHL and later, OHL team, that was in existence from 1969 to 1992. Last week, the Cornwall Colts announced that they would start selling Royals memorabilia. Clearly, there are those out there who believe there is something that can be built from the Royals’ hockey legacy, but is this coming from a hockey fever? Or is it a nostalgia fever for the Cornwall Royals.

In their weekly press release, the Nationals disclosed this week that they played their most recent game at the Ed Lumley Arena in front of 502 fans. Some might say that number is 502 fans better than zero, but the Ed Lumley Arena was built to house 5,000. The Colts had a turnout of 894 at their game on Feb. 1, and that number includes season ticket holders and pass holders. Based on turnout numbers like those, an outside observer might not know that Cornwall was a hockey town.

Something that Cornwall does have going for it is the dedicated core of volunteers and hockey fans who help bring and host important hockey tournaments to Cornwall like this past weekend’s Winterfest Tournament that took place at the Benson Centre this past weekend.

Come March 17, for better or worse, Cornwall’s hockey spirit is going to be on display on national television. I think that this event will likely be well attended, but I don’t know if that will translate to larger turnouts for the Cornwall Nationals and Cornwall Colts and I don’t know if

that means we are a hockey town.

It seems insurgency cannot be defeated in Afghanistan!

Attacks on military bases in Afghanistan has left a cycle of terror in this unstable country.

These multiple attacks have killed more than 300 people and left many more injured.

The alarm bells are ringing in the Afghani capital of Kabul.

The Taliban have claimed two attacks while ISIS says it is behind the others.

If the reports are true, there is a possibility of a deadly competition between the two terrorist groups.

The mere fact that military bases in the centre of Kabul have been attack raised a serious question if Afghanistan can protect itself.

Kabul is often referred to as “the ring of steel.”

The United States has made several promises to Afghanistan.

But, after 16 years of war, the world’s largest military force appears to be baffled on how to

end this conflict which has killed thousands and thousands of people.

A new strategy has to be found to end this war of terror.

And it makes sense to get the terrorist groups involved in peace talks if the conflict if to be resolved.

This question has been rightly bothering a number of western countries who, in past years, have sunk million of dollars in Afghanistan to bring political stability and peace in that troubled country.

Since the late 1970s, Afghanistan has suffered continuous and brutal civil wars in addition to foreign interventions in the form of the 1979 Soviet interventions and the recent 2001 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban government.

And since the fall of the Taliban, adherents of the hard-line Islamic movement have re-grouped.

The West has admitted Afghanistan is “very, very vulnerable” and will descend back into

Respect the plows Editor, With the city being hit with quite a bit of snow within 24 hours a couple weeks ago, I must say that we all owe a great bit of gratitude to the City of Cornwall for the hard work their plow operators put in to make the roads passable.

I am sure many of these workers went on little rest to do this.

To the social media site that allows such negative, hurtful comments to be posted, shame on you and to the people who do nothing more than complain, your posts speaks of your true mentality and ignorance. You all seem to forget, these people worked for us the residents while many of you took a back seat to discredit their efforts.

I felt embarrassed as a resident of Cornwall that this was done to these people.

Afghanistan needs a lot of resources and patience on the part of the international community.

The Afghanistan victory will never come solely through military means.

That country’s insurgency is fuelled by drugs.

Afghanistan’s drug industry makes up around 60 per cent of the economy.

This trade has boomed since the fall of the Taliban and the country supplies 93 per cent of the world’s opium, the raw ingredient of heroin.

Let there be no mistake that it is the drug trade that is helping to fuel the Taliban.

It is estimated Afghanistan receives around $100 million from this trade.

If all the Western nations leave, nothing will be achieved.

Well, how about a meat cleaver ... in the hands of an angry grocery store owner.

Grocer John Campbell was getting ready to close his small shop at Montreal Road and Lefebvre Avenue around 6 p.m. on Jan. 4, 1945 when three young men came through the door.

One pulled what looked like a revolver from his coat pocket, pointed it at Campbell standing behind the counter and yelled, “This is a stick-up.

We want your money.”

Handing over his day’s receipts wasn’t something the grocery wasn’t about to do.

As the young thug started to climb over the counter to get at the cash register, the 65-year-old Campbell grabbed his meat cleaver and wacked the scoundrel across the shoulder with the blunt side of the cleaver. The injured robber fell to the floor in a great deal of pain. His two startled companions helped him to his feet and all three fled the store with a cleaver-wielding Campbell in hot pursuit.

A few hours later they were arrested by township police chief Robert Hawkshaw and Const.

Donat Tessier. The injured “victim” was treated at Cornwall General Hospital.

On Feb. 8 the three were found guilty by a jury, which took just two hours to reach its verdict, of attempted robbery. The convicted men were immediately given two-year reformatory sentences. One of the accused was 17 years old. The

judge, Mr. Justice Urqhart, told the men they were lucky to be faster than the much older cleaver-wielding Campbell who chased them out of his store. The result could have been far more painful than the prison sentence.

Leo Gauthier, son of Mrs. Margaret Gauthier, 16 Louisa Ave., was seriously wounded during fighting in Italy. ...

So the couple produce photos of their 50-foot motor home, which is clean and well maintained and equipped with a beautiful nursery.

The social workers are satisfied by this but then raise concerns about the kind of education a child would receive while in the couple’s care.

The husband puts their mind at ease, saying, “We’ve arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin, and computer skills.”

Next though, the social workers express concern about a child being raised in a circus environment.

This time the wife explains, “Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet.”

The social workers are finally satisfied and ask the couple, “What age child are you hoping to adopt?”

The husband says, “It doesn’t really matter, as long as the kid fits in the cannon.”

Congratulations to Seymour Boileau who turned 100 on Monday, Feb. 5. Boileau has lived his entire life in the City of Cornwall. He believes that his secret to a long life is eating a lot of apples. He says he eats three-to-four apples a day. He remembers his wife would bring home a whole bushel of apples and that they would soon be gone. CORNWALL, Ontario - Girls Night Out is returning for its fifth year this year on Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Agora Centre.

This event starts at 4 p.m. and goes until closing at around 1 or 1:30 a.m.

The event is for ladies only who are 19-yearsold or older and supports Cornwall’s Maison Baldwin House, Cornwall’s women’s shelter.

Tickets are on-sale now for $20 and are $25 at the door.

The event will see 24 vendors who will be selling make-up jewellry and more.

In its five years, Girls Night Out has grown significantly, and has raised $15, 000 for Baldwin House.

Lamarche explained that Girls Night Out would not be possible without their sponsors, American Iron and Metal, Rurban Brewing, Paul’s Concrete & Flooring, Cornwall Orthodontics, South Branch Garage, Seaway Family Dental and Dr. Yassa.

POLICE BLOTTER DANGEROUS OPERATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE

CORNWALL, Ontario - Jamie Lafave, 19, of Long Sault and two 17-year-old Cornwall youths were arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

It is alleged on Sept. 9, 2017 Lafave was operating a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner when he was towing a sofa with passengers in the area of Second St. and Saunders Dr. All three were taken into custody, charged accordingly for their involvement and released to appear in court at a later date. The names of the two youths were not released as per provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Samantha Derouchie, 25, of Cornwall was arrested on Feb. d, 2018 and charged with take motor vehicle without consent, possession of cocaine and breach of probation for being in possession of cocaine and failing to keep the peace. It is alleged on Feb. 2, 2018 the woman took a motor vehicle without permission and police were contacted to investigate. In the early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2018 the woman was located by police, taken into custody and found to be in possession of a quantity of cocaine. She was charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.
