The world of whiskey comes to Cornwall for a second year Andrzej Terrence, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - “We’ve created a world here and the world has come!” said Ian Bentley, organizer of the Wonderful World of Whiskey show.

This weekend brought more than 500 people to the Nav Centre for the second annual Wonderful World of Whiskey on Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24, 2018.

People came from all over to try close to 175 different whiskeys from around Canada and the world.

To start the show guests to the event are educated on the different kinds of whiskeys at masterclasses that are presented by the most knowledgable whiskey connoisseurs.

Each class is about understanding the different types of whiskey by tasting half an ounce of five different expressions.

With ten masterclasses throughout the day patrons are able to experience a wide variety of types and brands of whiskey.

Then at seven the show begins with tastings and viewings of whiskeys from around the world.

Erica spins funds CORNWALL, Ontario - Erica Bryan took spinning to a whole new level this Saturday, March 24 by raising funds for the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation. One of the most intense workouts available, spinning is an exercise that involves a special kind of indoor cycling machine which is able to modify the difficulty of pedaling and simulate the inertia of an outdoor bicycle.

However, unlike an outdoor bike, the indoor machine has no freewheel, which means that the user cannot coast and in turn adds to the intensity of the workout.

As usual Erica’s Spinning Studio moved to their

fast-paced music under their blacklight bulbs elevating the high energy environment all while the spinners shook the ground with their explosive routine.

“Everybody should spin! It’s a great stress reliever and excellent for heart health,” explains Erica Bryan between their five-minute break.

The studio expected to raise more than 3000 $ to donate to the emergency room, fetal heart rate monitors, and bedside cardiac monitors.

In the last two years, the studio raised funds for the Mental Health and Addictions building.

“It’s a good workout and a good cause,” said Sara Summers, who has been spinning for close to a year.

New Executive Director at the Agapè Centre Provided by the Agapè Centre CORNWALL, Ontario - The Agapè Centre’s Executive Director, Diane Plourde, will be leaving at the end of March to pursue a new challenge. She will be returning to her previous role as Executive Director of Victim Services of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne with the added responsibility of also overseeing Koala Place as both organizations prepare to move and co-locate at a new location in May 2018.

“It was a difficult decision to leave after such a short time with the Agapè Centre but the opportunity to bring two complimentary agencies with multiple partners together to provide a better service to victims and their families was just too exciting to pass up. I will continue, however, to be a strong supporter of the Agapè Centre and will greatly miss the wonderful staff and volunteers that work so hard to ensure that no child, man or woman

goes hungry in our community” states Diane Plourde.

As a result of Mrs. Plourde’s departure, the Agapè Centre has decided to take this opportunity to restructure. The organization will be amalgamating the Operations Manager and Executive Director position together which will allow the hiring of a new Fund Development/ Public Education Coordinator. Johanne Couture, the current Operations Manager, has been appointed as the new Executive Director.

Other minor staffing changes will also take place which will allow better cost efficiencies and support of the goals of the organization.

Jim Healey, Board Chair states: “The Board thanks Diane for her dedication and leadership at the Agapè Centre and we wish her great success in her new challenges at Victim Services.

We are pleased that Johanne will be able to offer continuity to our organization and the Board looks forward to our work together.“

Collaboration at its Best!

Provided by CCH From diagnosis to treatment, a full service community hospital requires professionals, including physicians from multiple specialties and departments, to collaborate. In Melanie Pascual’s case, this collaboration ended up being lifesaving.

Melanie Pascual, a 26 year old registered nurse, came to Canada from the Philippines in 2015, to be a live-in caregiver. This was an opportunity to be reunited with her sister, Laila, who had also come to Canada for work in 2010. The thought of seeing snow for the first time was exciting and something she was looking forward to. Because of the nature of her work, Melanie was ignoring symptoms like headaches, heart palpitations, insomnia and swelling in the face as well as additional facial hair growth.

After presenting in the Emergency Department at CCH, she had a follow appointment up with Dr. Paul Westergaard, a local internist. “When I saw Melanie in my office, her blood pressure was 240/110 which is very dangerous; if left untreated this can cause a rupture or tearing of blood vessels, particularly in the brain or chest. I called an ambulance for her directly from my office.” Melanie had agreed to be transported to Cornwall Hospital by ambulance, with some convincing from her sister. In the Emergency Department, Dr. Lemire was able to lower her dangerously high blood pressure with multiple medications. She then consulted Dr. Arab, the intensivist on call,

for further investigation and admission to the Critical Care Unit (CCU). After an ultrasound, blood work, CT and MRI scan, it was determined that Melanie had Cushing’s syndrome.

This is a rare condition that causes elevated levels of the hormone called cortisol due to a tumour on the adrenal gland. After 6 weeks of medication to lower her blood pressure and cortisol levels, Melanie was ready for surgery to have the tumour removed.

Using his advanced laparoscopic surgery training, Dr. Dang, a general surgeon at Cornwall Hospital, was brought in to review the case and perform the surgical removal of the tumour. Specialized infrared operating cameras were provided by Stryker Canada to utilize a cutting edge technique of intraoperative fluorescein. The Pharmacy department sourced the required dye and ensured it was on site, enabling visualization of the tumours blood vessels once injected. “While resection of adrenal tumours was part of my fellowship training in Vancouver, the use of Indocyanine (Green dye) was a first for me. For a part of the operation, we switched the camera to “night vision mode” and this dye lit up the main blood vessels feeding the tumour, making its identification, and ultimately control, much safer. According to our Stryker representative, this was the first time this technique had been used in Canada for this type of surgery, and we are proud that it was possible here,” explains Dr. Dang. Some people will believe anything. They fall prey to swindlers of all kinds: salesmen, television hucksters, conspiracy theorists, religious fundamentalists and politicians. Their parents and our educational system have failed to develop their sense of discrimination. In its true sense, ‘discrimination’ is not a four-letter word. A few ounces of skepticism are a valuable element of a healthy attitude.

In the course of a casual conversation you may

hear ‘qualifier’ phrases’, which signal that a statement is not verifiable, can be questioned and should be taken as opinion, not necessarily deserving the status of being factual. ‘I think’ should preface any statement of opinion. Statements that include these terms should be flagged as opinions: ‘Supposedly…’, ‘I read somewhere…’, ‘When I was five years old, my uncle told me that…’, ‘In my grade six social studies textbook it said…’ ‘I read it somewhere…’, ‘It was on the internet, so it must be true…’ and ‘The guys at our Tim Horton’s gathering say that…’.

I once heard a story that went something like this: There was a certain aviator who had a penchant for telling tall tales, embellishing the details and exaggerating his supposed feats of prowess. At

the opposite end of the table was a far more accomplished pilot, a veteran who would listen attentively and politely. Every time he was asked for his stories, he would murmur, “It sure looks like it’s going to snow!” In exasperation one day, Mr. Tall Tales confronted Mr. Meek with, “Meek: you must be crazy.

Journalists have many ways of protecting themselves and embellishing their credibility. After hearing ‘Based on a recent sampling…’ you should ask, “How many people? Three? Four? Four Hundred? A random sample?” Use of ‘An unnamed, unidentified source’, ‘A source who stated on condition of anonymity…’ and ‘According to initial eye-witness reports’ should raise questions of credibility.

In these days of false news, whenever the president does a tweet, feel free to say “It sure looks like it’s going to snow!”

The annual meeting is always well attended by past and current elected officials and staff from partner municipalities. This year’s crowd was also joined by MPP Jim McDonnell.

The meeting included several presentations on past and current projects, including the million-dollar federal investment in new watershed modelling technology and new weather and environmental monitoring stations installed throughout the region to improve SNC’s Flood

Forecasting and Warning program.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local school teacher Matt Manson has helped to organize a group to share memories of Big Ben Ski Centre. The hope being that by generating enough interaction, and stories of support, that Cornwall City Council might reverse the Budget Steering Committee’s decision to pull funding from the recreation attraction.

To that end, he has created a Facebook group

called Save Big Ben Ski Centre, where people are invited to share their stories about the ski hill. To date, the page already has 450 followers.

“I want to bring recognition to council about what it means to the community,” said Manson.

Manson says that he has two young boys who learned to ski on the Big Ben ski hill and that it is an experience that cannot be replicated somewhere else.

He said that the cost of ski lessons at Big Ben is a fraction of that of other ski hills like Rigaud and Titus. He argues that it is more family friendly and that it is easier to run up the hill alongside young skiers to give them support when needed. Also, there is the convenience of having a ski hill right in Cornwall.

“For me to take my kids for two hours on a Saturday after going grocery shopping, it’s convenient,” Manson said.

Manson also argued that this meant more investment for local business, because instead of spending a day out of town, he and his family would be spending it right in Cornwall and would be spending money at a local attraction and having lunch at a local business afterwards.

Big Ben would also employ kids during the season, who would in turn spend their money in Cornwall.

Some councillors who sat on the budget committee when they made their decision argued that this move, while saving money in the short term, ultimately hurt local youth.

“Public response has been very vocal and proBig Ben, as are some of us on the budget committee,” said Councillor Elaine MacDonald in an email to Seaway News. “We hope to have support reinstated.”

The City of Cornwall was spending $78, 000 a year to operate the Big Ben Ski Centre, of that amound $27,000 was paid to Leader Sports to operate the ski centre.

Some councillors like Maurice Dupelle, have argued in the past that council should not be subsidizing local business.

“I want to be clear, that council is not closing Big Ben,” said Manson. “They are revoking the funding and are putting it up to tender. I feel by doing that, they are essentially closing it.”

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - It is looking like it will be a good year for maple syrup.

Golden and delicious, South Glengarry has a history with the sweet stuff going back centuries.

The warmer weather at the end of February and in early March has meant that tree tapping season started earlier this year. The recent cold snap followed by more warm weather means that the season may well be extended.

Allister MacDonell of SummerGlen Farm said that their operation started tapping the trees on Feb. 20 this year, a week earlier than in 2017 and he is expecting this season to continue longer than last year’s.

“I hope to make 25% more syrup then last year,” MacDonell said. He explained that typically, the farm sold about 400 litres of syrup a season.

SummerGlen Farm has been producing syrup since 1784.

Much of Eastern North America has reported that this maple syrup season started unusually early.

I’m a strong believer in the old maxim “you get what you pay for,” and I think that is especially true for people who work for you. If you want to fill a position with the best person for the job, you’d better make it is worth their trouble, which is why I never understand people who say that they want the salaries of their elected officials cut.

These are the people who are supposed to be looking out for your interests. I agree that they don’t always do the best job of that and recognize that it is impossible to make everyone happy all the time, but the solution to this problem is not to cut their pay.

If you want better people running for office, than make it worthwhile to run, or at least not prohibitive. Cornwall City Council is considering a $1,536.44 increase to the pay of councillors, or 9.6 percent a year. The reason for this increase, is that the federal government eliminated the tax-free exemption for members of provincial legislatures and municipal councils. Right now,

Councillors make $15,579.01 a year, without the tax exemption that drops to $14,427.02.

A report last year described the amount of work the average councillor does during the year. The average Cornwall City Councillor attends two council meetings a month, one a month in the summer, and sits on an average of 10 committees. In total, this adds up to 275 hours of work a year and this is not counting the extra events they go to, grand openings and the like, as well as the time they take to make themselves available to their constituents.

For the record, 275 hours a year comes out to $56.65 an hour. Given the importance of their work, the pressure that comes with making those decisions and the grief councillors get, whether justly or unjustly, from disgruntled citizens I think $56.65 an hour is about the right amount for a councillor in a town like Cornwall to get.

Again, this all comes back to attracting the right person to the job. Now, the ideal person would be one who is qualified, but not doing it for the money, the money is just there to help. A Councillors’ pay is not a salary, but

an honorarium meant to ease the burdens of honorarium is meant to help with that.

Let’s pay people what they’re worth and

public office. For example, a councillor may

have to take unpaid leave from work in order to encourage the cream of the crop to represent us fulfill some of the duties of their office, and this and make the tough decisions.

Historical Society politics Dear Editor: IT IS SAD …

It is sad that Mr. Denhez was asked to present the SD&G Historical Society Board position on recent events without being fully aware of some facts: principally, that my offer of ‘resignation’ from the Board was from the position of vicechair and not from the Board itself. It appeared that my being duly-elected as vice-chair at the AGM in March 2017 caused concern to some and at the April meeting it was indicated that I was not ‘known’ and had not been a member of the

Society Board long enough to step into the role of vice-chair. My offer to resign as vice-chair was an effort to quell unnecessary diversionary discussion.

It is sad and regrettable that the Board members who did not ‘know’ me, did not ask a few questions of me or of others which would have provided them with the information that I am quite well-known and in fact, have sat on several local community Boards where I have contributed quite successfully.

It is sad and curious that ‘personality conflicts’

was given as the reason for dismissal since I had had a very successful connection with the Museum and the Historical Society as the Chair of the Irish Monument Committee - a monument which is visible just west of the Museum; and, given the fact that I had been at the AGM and attended only the April and May Board meetings before being voted off the Board, it is sad that being new to a Board and asking questions about policy and procedures or offering a perspective could be deemed as ‘personality conflicts’.

It is sad that the June Board meeting was

apparently moved forward one week in order to dismiss two Board members who had previously indicated that they could not attend on that date, instead of taking place as scheduled when the Board members in question would have had an opportunity to engage in discussion and defend themselves.

The above-mentioned sad facts certainly do not dignify the SD&G Historical Society.

At the end of the day, it is very curious, regrettable, and sad.

In case you have been waking up at night wondering, Willie Wise is still marking off days on his prison cell calendar.

He still has a few to go. In February 2015 he started his 262-month sentence (roughly 21 years) for a fistful of convictions related to a Ponzi scheme that bilked folks out of millions of dollars.

Many lost their life savings.

Willie had a good time with their money. It is believed that he spent/blew $70 million on himself and entertaining friends/hangers-on. He lived in a mansion, had a hideout in the Caribbean and his own jet with crew on standby.

He is doing his time at Terminal Island Prison near Los Angeles. The place isn’t as bad as its name might imply. In fact, if you have to do a lot of time, this is the place to do it.

It is listed as a low security federal prison.

Security is so slack it was given increased barbed wire and armed guards in an attempt to dispel the joint’s Club Fed image. Nobody ever tries to escape. Why would they?

A prisoner who runs a blog called “Hopeful Inmate” called Terminal Island the most laid-back prison in the entire federal system. He called the food the best in the system with the kitchen serving up heart healthy alternatives.

To occupy their time, inmates can take courses on everything from plumbing to Spanish. There is a well-stocked library. There is a rec hall with pool tables, gym equipment and a hobby shop.

Inmates have access to a computer room.

The good news for Willie the ex-lawyer, ex-city

councillor and ex-hockey team owner is that he could be eligible for a transfer to a Canadian prison later this year.

Back in Canada, his time behind bars could be measured in a few months.

Of course, when he gets out he will need a job to help pay back the $1 million he owes the U.S. government in unpaid taxes.

Bissonnette considers Barnes a legitimate first-round prospect in the upcoming Ontario Hockey League draft. • Brent Lawson captured the Edward Jones senior men’s draw at Cornwall Curling Centre with a one-point edge on Don Orton. Lawson was supported by third Larry Amelotte, second Bert Zylstra and lead Randy Ross. Orton’s foursome was made up of third Louis Benoit, second Ross Sommerville and lead Bob Browning. Past annual general meetings (AGMs) have attracted a handful of folks. So many people have taken out $20 memberships (some from as far

away as Alberta) in the last few weeks that the AGM venue has been changed to the old Cornwall General Hospital from the capacity-challenged museum.

THIS AND THAT: With all the pre-election vote buying that goes on (June 7 provincial election) there is no way we could afford elections every two years. •This is a weird one. Usually it is the employer who complains that a union position is not needed. In this case, it was the union (CUPE) that complained to an arbitrator that a donothing-job was created by Cornwall Community Hospital for one of its union members. The employee said that on most shifts she has to look for something to do. The arbitrator ruled in favour of the hospital and its decision to create the alleged “do-nothing job”.

THIS WEEK IN 1970: Ald. Doug Fawthrop, chair of the city’s powerful finance committee, gave public works its marching orders during budget talks: Cut to the bone. Fawthrop, a chartered accountant who had become known around city hall as “The Hatchet Man”, was not happy with the $312,000 increase submitted in the public works budget. •Two Montreal men suspected of pulling off an armed robbery at the Bank of Montreal in Finch were arrested by OPP two days after the heist. The robbers were believed to have left the bank with $8,000. Their timing was off. Shortly after the robbery a Brink’s truck arrived at the bank to make what was called a substantial deposit. •A strike at Dominion Tape was into its fourth week. There were 135 union members on the picket line. • A new fire hall to be built just west of city hall was approved by council. Cost of the project was set at $227,222. •Two Woolco employees on their way to make a bank deposit were held up by a hooded man armed with a pistol in the parking lot shortly after closing

time. The man had fired a warning shot. He fled in a vehicle that was later found abandoned. It had been stolen from the Courtaulds parking lot. It was believed the man and his accomplice, the driver, made off with $5,000. •Charlene James, 17, of Cornwall was named Miss Congeniality at the Eastern Ontario beauty pageant. • Three buildings at Adolphus and Sixth streets were being torn down to make room for a senior citizens apartment building. Other houses were being demolished to proved for the extension of Sydney Street from Ninth to Tenth Streets and the re-alignment of Pitt Street from Ninth to Eleventh Street. The projects were part of an urban renewal plan. •Seaway Pilots won the Cornwall City Junior B Hockey League championship with an 8-6 win over Textile Workers Union of America. Eugene Morawski, Terry Hart and Ron Lalonde had two goals apiece for the winners.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1930 the Cornwall Kiwanis Club received approval from town council for construction of a swimming pool at Central Park. The pool survived until the late 1960s.

Central Park was renamed Horovitz Park in 1958.

Construction of Cornwall Square and the necessary re-alignment of Sydney Street between Water and First streets in 1984 reduced the park to what it is today, a mere footprint.

TRIVIA: In September 1969 this high-profile female Mohawk activist was acquitted in Cornwall county court of carrying an offensive weapon on Cornwall Island. She had been charged by Cornwall police during a Dec. 18 demonstration that impeded traffic travelling between the U.S. and Canada.

For winter these trails would be used for hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and what about the expansion of the ski and snowboard area to a higher peak, have long toboggan run with curves (perhaps like what they have at water parks).

We have a gem in the center of town just begging for development. It is not looking at millions of dollars only a few thousand and on a user pay system most certainly could develop into a positive cash flow position and become a

mecca for sport and recreation.

Cornwall has ice rinks that bring in tournaments, just imagine what a gem like Big Ben could bring in to compliment the Benson Centre and to help with the losses it creates in both winter and summer. As I mentioned, we should at least be joining in the request for fitness activities.

I would just love to see Cornwall called the THE CAPITAL OF EASTERN ONTARIO FOR SPORT RECREATION AND FITNESS”.

I can envision the current ski area covered in sand and open in the summer to sand boarding. It is a sport I have done in the sand dunes of Oregon and has become very popular.

There is a fairly new sport called slacklining, which is becoming extremely popular and could be installed for peanuts. The hill currently has a roadway to the top for trucks, so let’s bring in dozers and create trails up down and around

Cutting the budget to grow dandelions rather than flowers, grow weeds instead of grass cutting is not the way to go. Tournée des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie à Cornwall

tout simplement hilarant, le spectacle d’humour Communiqué de presse de l’ACFO-SDG CORNWALL, Ontario - Plus de 300 personnes mettait en vedette Philippe Bond, excellent et s’étaient déplacées au théâtre Aultsville de émouvant dans l’évocation de Monique, sa mère, Cornwall ce vendredi 23 mars 2018 pour assister et de son père. À cette occasion aussi, le public au spectacle d’humour de la Tournée des Rendez- ravi a pu apprécier l’univers comique de Frank vous de la Francophonie (RVF) dans le cadre du Grenier.

Les spectateurs ont aussi eu le plaisir de Concours LOL-Mort de rire! Cet événement était présenté par la Fondation canadienne pour le découvrir les quatre « coups de coeur » choisis dialogue des cultures et l’Association cana- parmi les prochains finalistes du Concours LOLdienne-française de l’Ontario — Stormont, Mort de rire! organisé par l’ACFO-SDG dans le Dundas et Glengarry (ACFO-SDG). Pour sa cadre de l’initiative « Jeunesse-Humour ». Le Chemin de croix est une parmi plusieurs activités pastorales à l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle. Pendant l’année, les élèves ont l’occasion de célébrer la messe avec la communauté de la Paroisse St-Félix-de-Valois. Aussi, les élèves participent à diverses activités sous le thème pastoral du CSDCEO: “Change le monde.” De plus, une dizaine d’élèves de l’école commence à préparer un voyage missionaire prévu pour 2019.

L’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle et son Pavillon intermédiaire comptent une population estudiantine de près de 600 élèves de la 7e à la 12e année. Le personnel dévoué de l’école compte près d’une centaine de personnes et assure une éducation hors pair aux élèves de la région de Cornwall depuis plus de 40 ans.

Communiqué de presse de l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle CORNWALL, Ontario - Les élèves de l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle invitent la communauté de Cornwall et ses environs à assister à la représentation du Chemin de croix le 28 mars à compter de 19h00.

Près de 100 élèves préparent la représentation de la passion du Christ qui aura lieu dans le gymnase de l’école. En arrière-scène, ils s’occupent de la technique d’éclairage et du son jusqu’au maquillage et costumes. Sur scène, environ 50 élèves incarnent les divers rôles des scènes de la passion.

Le groupe Au Coin livrera les chants et la musique qui accompagnera les moments de prières.

Understanding the concept of “Reconciliation”

impossible. The grief of a death is life altering.

It is not something that one “gets over”. It affects people in varying degrees but the journey through grief impacts the mourner forever.

Although mourners learn to live with grief, this does not mean that they live a life of misery. Reconciliation takes time, with growth often accompanying the healing. The bereaved person may not become truly reconciled to the loss for several years and even then will have “grief bursts” forever. The sense of loss remains, but mourners often find their lives potentially deeper and more meaningful after the death of someone they loved.

No one wishes to take the journey through grief. But by understanding the concept of reconciliation, it is easier to understand the journey and its ultimate goal.

If a person dies in Canada, the death must be registered with the government of the province where the death occurred. A funeral director usually oversees the process of death registration.

To register a death, the funeral director submits two completed documents to the applicable provincial authority: (1) the death certificate; and (2) a statement of death. (The title of this form varies between provinces.)

Information that is gathered from death registrations about causes of death can be used for medical/health research or statistics.

The Death Certificate: When there is a death, the attending physician, a nurse practitioner or a coroner, completes an official form indicating the cause of death. He or she gives the death certificate to the funeral director with the body of the deceased or sends it to the funeral director after the body has been collected.

The Statement of Death: The funeral director completes this form with help from a person who knew the deceased, typically a family member. If a relative is unavailable, an adult that lived with the deceased or knew the deceased may be able to supply the required information.

The form asks personal information about

a funeral home or a transfer service. All funeral homes must offer an inexpensive service known as ‘direct disposition’. Transfer Services are companies that may only offer the ‘direct disposition’ option. This option includes the removal of the deceased from the place of death, the placement of the body in a container or casket, the delivery of the body to the cemetery or crematorium and the filing of necessary documentation. It does not include visitation or services with the body present.

Death is a fact of life we must all face at some point. Dealing with the death of a loved one is difficult. Although often difficult to talk about and harder to accept, death is a natural part of our lives. It is a stage of the cycle of life. As death is natural, so is grief. It’s a normal reaction to loss, not a disease or a condition. It is part of our human existence.

Often mourners are referred to as “recovering” from grief. This term is damaging because it implies that grief is an illness that must be cured. It also suggests that grief can be cured. Mourners don’t recover from grief.

They become “reconciled” to it. In other words, they accept the reality of the death and learn to live with it. Grief is not something that goes away like the measles. It forever remains with the mourner. Reconciliation comes in learning to live with the grief while being eternally changed by it. The family of the late Bernadette Brunet (nee Lalonde) wishes to thank their relatives and friends for the many acts of kindness shown to them in the loss of their Mother. The Cornwall Community Hospital (C.C.H.) are more than thankful for the donations and pledges made across Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne. The Canadian icebreaker Pierre Radisson was the first vessel up bound past Clark Island, Summerstown, Ont., Saturday afternoon at 4:42 p.m. marking the start of the 60th season of the Seaway system. She moored for the night at the Eisenhower Lock upper wall. She is heading for Toronto for crew change then up to Lake Superior to assist with the icebreaking operations. Caydence Andre was invited to sign the City of Cornwall’s Book of Recognition at the Cornwall City Council meeting on Monday night because of her charity work. Caydence has been involved in charity work since she was fiveyears-old. In January, Caydence celebrated her 11th birthday, but instead of having a party just for her, she had a party fundraiser in support of the MS Society. She raised over $500 at that party. Way to go Caydence!

The Canada Union of Public Employees (C.U.P.E.) held one last rally on Monday evening with well over 100 public employees before the conciliation process begins later this week. The rally took place in front of the city hall while city council was meeting upstairs.

Congratulations to Terryland Farms, which was the venue for the federal Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay and the Minister of Agriculture’s announcement of the Agricultural Clean Technology Program. This $25 million, three-year investment is to develop clean technologies that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

SCUTTLEBUTT Local contractors are not happy with Cornwall Council’s direction with development charges.

One contractor said it was unfair that there is a five-year phase-in for residential properties, but charges will apply right away to commercial and industrial properties. One contractor also said “I have to go find new clients now.”

On the topic of development charges, Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy gave an impassioned speech in support of the new charge. He said that citizens deserve quality services and this was a way to help support those services. He also pointed to the criticism that the Counties don’t have development charges, he said that just to hook up to water & sewer was thousands of dollars up front in Glen Walter.

On Sunday April 1, 2018, Silvy Tremblay and staff of Glengarry Golf & Country Club will be hosting an Easter Sunday Brunch at 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This delicious brunch will be $13.95 for adults and $5.95 for children under the age of 6.

This past summer, Cornwall learned that it is the stray cat capital in Ontario. More than 70 percent of all stray cats in the province live here.

Breeding season is right around the corner and I don’t see any progress being made on this problem.

Marta Jamroch-Fryczkowska CORNWALL, Ontario - On April 3, 2018, a new medical clinic at Unit # 201 - 171 Montreal Road (above the Medical Art Pharmacy) will officially be opening its doors. Nurse Practitioner Marta Jamroch-Fryczkowska will begin her practice at this location while continuing to work collaboratively with Dr. Leigh and Dr. Ronald Tremblay. As Dr Faizer closes his family practice effective April 2018, she will be providing continuous medical care to many of his patients.

Nurse Practitioner Marta Jamroch-Fryczkowska will also be accepting new patients who do not presently have a family physician. Marta’s practice will focus on adult patients 18 years old and up. Names will be taken and placed on a waiting list to be contacted for future available appointments.

Starting April 3rd 2018, patients will be able to contact the new office at 613-935-9943.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the month of April, the OPP and the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) are giving residents the opportunity to surrender guns they no longer want.

This amnesty covers guns owned both legally and illegally, as well as any accessories that residents are looking to dispose of or ammunition.

Guns that have been used during the commission of a criminal act will not be accepted under the amnesty.

The police services stress that in the interest of public safety that residents do not attempt to drop off guns at their local police stations, instead, they are being asked to setup an appointment by calling 1-888-310-1122. Once an appointment has been setup, a police officer will come to the resident’s home to collect the unwanted firearm.

Police are asking that all weapons being collected are unloaded and stored in a safe manner.

Additionally, no weapon will be accepted anonymously.

Those looking to dispose of their firearms through the amnesty can also setup an appointment online at www.opp.ca/gunamnesty .

“Ontario has seen an increase in break-and-enter incidents where firearms are stolen or targeted by criminals,” said OPP Commissioner J.V.N. Hawkes. “The OPP and our participating police partners are giving people a safe way to dispose of weapons, imitation weapons and related equipment, accessories and ammunition to reduce the number of guns in their communities.”

The CCPS are supporting this OPP initiative and will be available to collect unwanted firearms in the City of Cornwall during the amnesty. The amnesty will run from April 1 to April 30.

Distracted Driving Campaign results SMITHS FALLS, Ontario - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) East Region participated in the Provincial Distracted Driving Campaign which took place from March 12, 2018-March 18, 2018.

This week long campaign concentrated on enforcement directed towards Distracted Driving and the use of cell phones while driving.

During this week a total of 688 driver’s across East Region were charged with using a hand-hand electronic device while driving.

In addition there were also a total of 22 driver’s charged with distracted related careless driving.

OPP would like to remind driver’s that inattentive driving is the number one reason for fatalities on OPP patrolled roadways. The

number of Provincial Offences that were issued during this week related to distracted driving shows this is still a concern on our roadways.

“The number of charges that resulted from this past week’s Distracted Driving campaign on East Region Highways patrolled by the OPP is a disheartening reminder that the community has not heard the message. Inattentive driving results in tragedy that can be avoided. The OPP is asking for your assistance in stopping this tragedy, by simply keeping your eyes and attention focused on driving and nothing further. I ask that you leave the phone alone, answering a text or phone call is not worth a life.” stated Traffic Inspector Paul Bedard.
