CORNWALL, Ontario - This Saturday, Habitat for Humanity invited tea enthusiasts to the Best Western for their tea party fundraiser with the hopes of raising about $1,000 that will go to Habitat’s programming.

Breckyn Fowler with the help of volunteers from the Kinette’s Club brought approximately 75 to 100 people to the Best Western for the event.

“This was somebody’s granny’s teacup, and now we have a better use for it and can get it back out into the community,” explained Breckyn.

Habitat for Humanity sees a large number of teacups throughout the year, and for them, it is a way to transfer those lost pieces of china into projects that benefit the community.

The organization has broken ground on their next build site for their 13th family in Williamsburg and plans to have a pancake breakfast as a launch for the start of construction at the end of May.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bob Kikkert is an avid motorcycle rider and a survivor of prostate cancer. For the past 10 years he has been participating in the Ride for Dad fundraiser to raise money for prostate cancer research.

Ride for Dad is a one-day motorcycle ride.

Participants join the ride by raising funds for the charity. Ride for Dad fundraisers take place in cities across Canada.

Kikkert has been riding in the Ottawa edition of the fundraiser since 2008. This year, he rides out on June 2 and hopes to raise $3,700. Over the past 10 years, he has raised $27,000 for the charity.

Kikkert, 73, has been riding motorcycles since 1972 and when asked why he responded

with one word “freedom”.

“When you go out on a highway . . . nothing is stopping you from seeing it all,” he said.

Kikkert has previously traveled such famous highways like Route 66 in the United States, traveling the 2,200 miles from Chicago Illinois to California.

He explained that participating in the Ride for Dad brings a strong experience of fellowship and comradery.

“When you start the Ride for Dad and you see all those bikes around you . . . see that is really something,” he said. “You also always make a new friend and talk to the people beside you.”

Into the light Ali Gearey, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - On Saturday, May 5, 2018 Joanne Haley and Lianne Acres- Hanna hosted a new annual event called “Into the Light” which raised over $4,300. This event was created to support suicide prevention awareness throughout Stormont, Glengarry, Dundas and City of Cornwall. There were over 200 participants taking part in this inaugural event.

The event was held at 5:30 a.m. at the Bandshell near the Cornwall Civic Complex. All participants walked approximately 5 km for suicide awareness and prevention. The walk was purposely scheduled so early so participants would walk into the sunrise to symbolize that those living in a dark place being brought back into the light.

“We are proud to assist in creating the ‘Into the Light’ event to promote suicide prevention and awareness,” said Joanne Haley and Rob Haley in a media statement about the event. “On May 1, 2016, our lives changed forever as our son Ryan took his own life. It is not easy to admit that your son has committed suicide and it is not easy to talk about it. Ryan was a handsome, sensitive, intelligent, popular and loved young man. Neither his brother Derek, nor we, his parents, would ever have thought something like this could happen to him or to us. No one was aware of his struggles nor did anyone expect him to take his own life. If we only could have seen or knew what Ryan was thinking and feeling maybe Ryan would still be with us today. We hope that talking about suicide and making an

effort to make a difference will perhaps save a life” The registration fee was $25 per person and all of the proceeds were donated to the Community Addictions and Mental Health Centre (CAMH) at the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH) which provides many different services that include suicide intervention. For those who were unable to participate in the walk, donations could also be made to the CAMH, which is a great way to honour loved ones who have passed from suicide or have had suicidal thoughts.

Joanne Haley and Lianne Acres- Hanna hope that talking about suicide and making an effort will make a difference to perhaps save someone’s life. They hope by making this event possible, it can show that those in a dark place can be brought back into the light.

“We were overwhelmed with the turnout and the amount raised,” said Joanne Haley.

Haley said that at the event on Saturday morning, there were those walking in remembrance of loved ones lost to suicide. She said that there were at least nine individuals who died to suicide who were being remembered by those at the walkathon.

“This was the biggest impact to me, as I heard from many say that they have no one to talk to about it because people don’t understand how different the grieving process is when a loved one commits suicide,” Haley said in a statement to Seaway News.

The next Into the Light walkathon has been scheduled for May 4, 2019.

More long-term care beds announced for Cornwall and SD&G Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ministry of Health and Long Term care is funding the creation of at least 122 new long term care beds in Cornwall and SD&G. Of the 122 new beds, 95 of those will be added to Cornwall’s Parisien Manor, brining their total number of beds to 160. As it is now, Parisien Manor is more than double its resident capacity with 65 occupied beds, and an average wait list of 25 people.

Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell announced the new beds at

Parisien Manor on the morning of Friday, May 4.

McDonell praised the Manor for the hard work they do to support seniors.

“It is nice to know with the hard work we’ve done over the years, that there is a place like this where we can age with dignity,” he said.

The addition of these new beds will require a remodelling of Parisien Manor with the possibility of building a new site entirely, but Richard Franzke, Director of Operations of Southbridge Care Homes said that Parisien Manor will stay in Cornwall no matter what. Southbridge Care Homes is the company that operates Parisien Manor.

The additional rooms will also require

additional staff, and Franzke said that their goal is to have a one-to-eight nursing staff to resident ratio.

“We are pleased to be able to not only maintain long-term care in Cornwall, but through the support of MPP Jim McDonell, expand out capacity by an additional 9 beds,” said Franzke.

“These beds will continue our commitment to providing consistent, high-quality health care for Cornwall seniors both now and into the future.”

Next year, Parisien Manor celebrates its 50th anniversary.

The Ministry has also provided funding for 10 new long-term care beds at Heartwood Homes in Cornwall and Woodland Villa in Long Sault.

CORNWALL, Ontario – On May 22 Chartwell will be hosting a luminary decorating event in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and this event is a step on the road to the Relay for Life in June.

Those who wish to participate in the event on the evening of May 22 will be given luminaries to decorate in commemoration of a loved one lost to cancer. Luminaries are special bags with candles inside that have the name of the one who was lost to cancer on the front.

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. on May 22 at McConnell Manor, a Chartwell home. Chartwell is the Relay for Life 2018 Luminary sponsor.

There has been a lot of talk in the media lately about equality. Our little buddy down south made quite an impact in the women’s movement. Women standing up across the world against inequality. Marching against violence. Not a day a goes by that we don’t hear about a woman somewhere being assaulted.

The #Metoo movement went straight to the heart of most women I know. How many of us, said me too? I know I did. We all have a story.

Working in a sexual assault centre, the conversation often rolls around feminist principals.

We fundamentally believe that no one has a right over our bodies. Our bodies, our choice!

When we want to share our bodies, we should be able to, without fear or shame. Do you ever wonder why we women are so darn angry!

Enough already! Can we not just walk down the street without getting catcalled?? Or worrying if

I recently had coffee with a young man, who wanted to pick my brain about a project he was working on. He was pitching something about “getting more action”. Some Pick up artist BS. And likely he’ll make a ton of cash doing it. But pitching it to a feminist not a good move. Nope!

We managed to turn it around once I breathed a little and listened, and he listened a little, it got better. His principals were based on respect and mutual pleasure. My claws came out and we finished our drink.

The whole conversation made me think of power, as both sexes struggled to keep theirs.

Why not buy the waterfront?

Last week Cornwall City Councillor David Murphy announced he is running for Mayor in the 2018 municipal election. When asked about some of his policy platforms that he was running on, Murphy said that he wanted to see the City of Cornwall own all of the waterfront.

Most of the city’s waterfront is currently owned by the federal Ministr y of Transportation who have made it clear that they intend to sell the land by 2020. When sold, the Ministry has said that the City of Cornwall will not be given the first right of refusal, which means that Cornwall will have to bid on the land like any prospective developer.

Murphy said that buying all of the waterfront land would be an expensive endeavour for the city, but that he believed that it would be a worthwhile exercise and I agree with him.

While the city might not always do with the land exactly what the community wants, at least in their hands, there will be some

level of public accountability. That accountability to the public would mean that the community of Cornwall can help shape the future vision of our waterfront.

This doesn’t mean that there won’t be opportunities for private enterprise. The city owning all of the waterfront land is a good thing for private developers. By letting the City and its citizens have their say, the developers will avoid the headache of planning developments on land that the community wants left alone.

There will be opportunity for developers to build on waterfront land, it is just a matter of where. This time last year, a local developer pitched an idea of building condos on a very scenic area of our waterfront and parts of the community organized against the project.

The City owning the waterfront will bring some level of certainty to the development process and will help to avoid situations like the one that occurred last year. It would be up to the City of Cornwall however to ensure that the process is done correctly and that the voice of the majority is heard.

The City will not only have to buy the

land, but actively work with the community to ensure that the waterfront is developed according to the will of the people. The City should not buy the land just to give a cloak of legitimacy to any development project that takes place on the waterfront.

Buying all of the waterfront land will be an expensive endeavour, but it is a smart investment. To reference an old saying, they aren’t making anymore land. Selling parts of

the waterfront is something that the City could always consider at some point down the road if it was in dire straits financially.

How will I get into some Hall of Fame? I’m not quite sure, but I’m working on it. Here are four of my personal greatest achievements.

Here’s the first. I developed an absolutely brilliant strategy for saving wads of money. When I go on a date with my wife to Tim’s for a doubledouble, we share one extra-large, doublecupped, but at far less cost than if we purchased two mediums. Half is poured into one cup, the rest remains in the other. As a side-benefit, no coffee sloshes out of either of the half-filled cups as we drive away.

HERE AND THERE Retired Cornwall police sergeant Bob Trottier passed away last month after a short illness. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and spent a tour of duty in Vietnam as his squad’s M-60 machine gunner. His unit saw some the most brutal combat in the war and took heavy casualties. When Trottier applied for the Cornwall force the chief of the day, Allan Clarke, was concerned with hiring somebody who wore glasses. ... TRIVIA ANSWER The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders returned from Europe on Dec. 29, 1945. Thousands of people were at the CNR train station (on Ninth Street East) to meet the soldiers. The HIghlanders were among 13,000 Canadian troops aboard the Queen Elizabeth liner that landed in New York City on Dec. 28.

As Eric Carr charged the Cornwall Nationals’ net in the first-period of a Cornwall and District Junior Lacrosse League playoff game on Oct. 13, 1932 he was checked by Nationals’ defenceman Romould Ethier.

As referees George Collins and Albert Quenneville testified a few days later at a coroner’s inquest, Ethier’s check was hard but perfectly legal check.

Carr took three steps after the check and fell to the floor of the old Victoria Arena. Minutes later his team-mates carried his limp body to the dressing. A slight pulse was detected. Doctors M. A. Kelly and C. A. Stewart, among the spectators, rushed to the dressing room. As the second period started, the two medical men along with Collegiate coach Clarence Petepiece laboured to restart the 18-year-old Cornwall Collegiate player’s heart.

A few minutes later George Collins blew his whistle to stop play so an announcement could be made over the public address system. The Collegiate player, fans were informed, had died.

The game was being halted. A stunned crowd quietly filed out of the arena and the players retreated to their dressing rooms.

The next day an inquest ruled the death was “purely accidental” and the player who delivered the check was blameless. Coroner Dr. C. J. Hamilton said the player suffered a traumatic

contusion of the heart when the neck of the opponent’s stick penetrated two ribs and caused a traumatic contusion of the heart.

Dr. Hamilton called it a “once in a hundred years” kind of lacrosse injury.

The funeral was held from the Carr family home on Water Street East to Woodlawn Cemetery where the young outstanding Collegiate athlete was laid to rest. Marching in the procession were his teammates along with scores of local and district athletes. The Cornwall City Band led the procession.

It is believed Carr’s death was the first recorded box lacrosse death in North America but it wasn’t the first death of a young athlete involving the Victoria Arena built in 1898 by local businessman John Snetsinger.

On March 6, 1907 during a hotly contest hockey fixture at the Vic, 22-year-old Cornwall player Owen “Bud” McCourt was clubbed over the head with a hockey stick during a brawl. He died the next day.

It was the second hockey death in Canada.

The first recorded hockey death was in Maxville on Feb. 24, 1905 when Alexandria player Alcide Laurin, 22, was killed when struck on the head by a hockey stick during a fight.

THIS WEEK IN 1960 Construction of a 40-room hotel was under way on Brookdale Avenue just north of the old CNR tracks. Plans called for the inn to be expanded to include a banquet hall and bowling alley. It was being built by the Abraham brothers on a 12-acre site. ... The tires are the only thing between the vehicle and the road. When they are properly inflated and in good condition, the handling, stability and safety of the vehicle will be maximized.

Conversely, when the tires are under inflated, worn out or damaged, all of the safety systems on the vehicle cannot overcome the loss of control that comes with a blow-out or hydroplaning situation. Tires naturally lose 1-2 psi per month, so ongoing neglect will eventually result in a tire that cannot support the weight of the vehicle and the occupants. When this happens, the resulting blow-out can result in the loss of control and an accident.

It’s also important to rotate the tires on the vehicle every 5-7,000 miles. Today’s front-wheeldrive vehicles cause the steer tires to wear at a much faster rate than the tires on the rear axle. By periodically rotating the front tires to the back and the back tires to the front, motorists can

achieve even tread wear on all four tires and increase the mileage and performance. Failing to rotate the tires often results in the front tires wearing out faster while the rear tires develop irregular tread wear patterns that cause vibrations. The same can be said for alignments. When the vehicle is not properly aligned, the tires will wear out faster which leads to increased operating costs.

Finally, drivers should perform a visual inspection of their tires on a regular basis, especially after hitting a pothole, curb or any type of road debris.

Bulges, cuts and other visible damage weaken the internal components of the tire, which can lead to a blow-out. Regular visual inspections will often identify any potential problems before they result in an accident. It’s also a good idea to have the tires inspected by a professional before any long road trips to ensure there are no obvious out-of-service conditions that must be addressed.

“I like to think that I’m very tapped into pop culture,” said Zaczyk. “I’m always on social media, like Instagram, I’m always watching interior design shows; you name it. I like going to Montreal and Toronto for inspiration—the bigger urban cities. It’s overwhelming how much inspiration is out there.”

In terms of style price, Zaczyk believes her product fits into a happy medium between inexpensive and high-end jewellery.

“Our product is affordable, and more thought goes into choosing these pieces,” said Zaczyk. “I’m trying to take a stance on this disposable fashion thing. I love costume

jewellery, but the manufacturing makes it disposable.”

Recently, Crush Lane created a Home Vibes collection where vintage ashtrays are repurposed as jewellery catch trays. Similarly, Zaczyk has a jewellery collection that she created from repurposed materials.

Apart from her collections, Zaczyk likes to sit down with her clients for a more personalized, custom experiene—especially with bridalwear.

“Crush lane is always developing, and as we grow, our collections will grow too,” Zaczyk.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Tarah Zaczyk had a passion for jewellry and design since the age of 16 when she worked as a cleaner at a local jewellry store. Now she has her own boutique, Crush Lane, that specializes in custom goldsmithing using computer generated designs.

“It’s a young, fresh approach to custom design and it’s something I`ve been doing for quite some time now,” said Zaczyk.

Before Crush Lane opened on May 1, Zaczyk showcased her collections at Echo Trends for just under a year. Zaczyk hopes that having her own brick and mortar location will

help to build her brand and expand her business.

Zaczyk attended OCAD University for fashion design and marketing, but eventually she found her niche at George Brown College in the goldsmithing program.

“I`ve always been really hands on and (I) have a good appreciation for detail, so it was perfect,” said Zaczyk.

In her final year of college, Zaczyk discovered the name of her company Crush Lane when she misheard her friend talking about Rush Lane, which is also known as Graffiti Alley in Toronto. She created a grafitti-esque collection inspired by this neighbourhood’s aesthetic for a final project.

But when it comes to repairs, some things stay the same. Whatever type of repair facility you patronize - dealership, service station, independent garage, specialty shop, or a national franchise - good communication between customer and shop is vital. The following tips should help you along the way. Do your homework before taking your vehicle in for repairs or service.

Today’s technician must understand thousands of pages of technical text.

Fortunately, your required reading is much less.

• Read the owner’s manual to learn about the vehicle’s systems and components.

• Follow the recommended service schedules. Keep a log of all repairs and service.

Use all of your senses to inspect your car frequently.

Check for: • unusual sounds, odours, drips, leaks, smoke, warning lights, gauge readings; • changes in acceleration, engine performance, gas mileage, fluid levels;

• worn tires, belts, hoses; and • problems in handling, braking, steering, vibrations.

Note when the problem occurs.

• Is it constant or periodic?

• When the vehicle is cold or after the engine has warmed up?

• At all speeds? Only under acceleration? During braking? When shifting?

• When did the problem first start? Stay involved - ask questions.

• Ask as many questions as you need. Do not be embarrassed to request lay definitions.

It is with great sorrow that the family of Mashoud Ahmad Janjua, announce his sudden passing on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the age of 73 years. He passed away in his winter home in Atlanta, Georgia after several months of travel.

Always the one for adventure, Mashoud lived his life with zeal and keen enterprise. He put smiles on the faces of anyone he met, with his astute knowledge of various subjects and his witty sense of humour.

Mashoud is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Colombe Regimbald, his dear brothers Bashir Janjua and Moeen Janjua, and beloved sisters Salma Mirza, Rehana Butt, and Rana Janjua. Mashoud was predeceased by his brother Sadique Janjua.

“Lalay Chacha,” as he was lovingly known as to all his nieces and nephews, will forever be remembered as their most good-humoured, entertaining and gentle-hearted second father.

A wake will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, May 11th, 2018 at Masjid Baitun Nasir, 341 Balmoral Ave, Cornwall, ON. Funeral service is to follow the same day at 3:30 PM, at Woodlawn Cemetery, 540 Cumberland Street, Cornwall, ON.

This precious substance covers threequarters of the earth’s surface, is necessary to sustain every form of life, and we sure couldn’t do without it in cleaning. The type of water you use, however, will make a difference. Hard-water diminishes the power of soaps and detergents and may form dingy grey color in laundry and bathtubs. It also forms hard-water scale on plumbing fixtures. Hot water is much more effective for cleaning than cold water. Cold water will cut down your cleaning power and may make it hard to dissolve some types of cleaning compounds, unless your using products specifically designed for cold water as in laundry soaps. Hot water, with cleaning solvants, has the ability to penetrate and dissolve a wide range of soils. Water alone won’t clean dirt well, especially old dirt.

Women Shot In her oWn DrIveWay

Linda Burnett, 26, a resident of San Francisco, was visiting her in-laws… and while there, went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries.

Later, her husband noticed her sitting in her car in the driveway with the windows rolled up and her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head.

He became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Linda’s eyes were now open and she looked very strange. He asked her if she was okay, and she replied that about an hour ago, she had been shot in the back of the head and had been holding her brains in for over an hour!

The husband called the paramedics, who broke into the car because the doors were locked and Linda refused to remove her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head.

A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head.

When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered.

Linda is a Democrat, and a Clinton - Pelosi supporter… but all that could be just a coincidence.

The defective biscuit canister was analyzed and the expiration date was from 2008, so it was determined to be George Bush’s fault.

The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Seniors Education Centre received $12,000 from the province to continue their Encore educational courses. Some of the money will be used to advertise and promote the courses, which include their WIN writing program.
