The event kicked off at 10 a.m. and was shortly followed by a high-energy, Zumba with Christal warm up, which included children, parents and police officers alike.

Cst. Brian Langlois, Cst. Casey MacGregor and Cst. Darrell Blakey of the Cornwall Community Police Service (CCPS) decided to start the event when they recognized a lack of information regarding bike safety in the community.

“We organized the Bikes and Badges event because we noticed there was a shortcoming of training and safety equipment in Cornwall, specifically for younger kids,” said Cst. Langlois. “So we decided, why not try and fundraise, use community sponsors, get the helmets and provide the training? Five years later, here we are.”

Three lucky participants won new bicycles.

Two bikes were donated by Canadian Tire and one was donated by the police officers involved in the event. Burn Tucker Lachaine Personal Injury Lawyers donated 70 helmets to participants, and they provided a jelly brain to show children how fragile our brains are, highlighting the importance of helmet usage.

Total Cyclery performed bike inspections to ensure everyone’s bike was adequate for riding.

A Crime Prevention Booth with the CCPS was set up to register bicycle serial numbers for locating purposes in the case of loss or theft. BMX Cornwall was also involved, and their new track Continued on pg. 6

Relay for Life SD&G brings in $82,000 Nick Seebruch

MAXVILLE, Ontario - It was a very successful year for the annual Relay for Life. This year’s event raised over $82,000 in Cornwall and SD&G. On Friday, June 1 at the Maxville Fairgrounds, around 200 people showed up to walk the track, support the survivors and raise funds for cancer research. With so much support this year, the Relay reached its fundraising goal of $50,000 early in the week before the event and then went on to exceed it. At the event were the Brigadoons and MacCulloch Dancers, a pizza party for the kids as well as Zumba and meditation. Cancer survivors kicked off the walk in their yellow shirts, and walked the first lap together. There were at least 30 survivors on hand at the beginning of the Relay.

“I feel great and it is an honour to be here,” said

cancer survivor Francoise Brunet. “Everyone is touched by cancer in some way so it is important to go out and show support at events like these.”

“When someone is diagnosed with cncaer the whole family and friends are affected,” said survivor and event MC Ivan Labelle.

Relay teams walked into the night, with their path light by luminaries. Luminaries are paper bags with electric candles inside that have been decorated in memory of a loved one lost to cancer. The event was sponsored by MacEwen’s Gas, with Chartwell providing the Luminary sponsorship and Dubuc Eyecare serving as the Survivors sponsor. The Canadian Cancer Society of SD&G is accepting donations for the Relay for Life until June 11. LONG SAULT, Ontario – The Pharmasave in Long Sault is offering new services unique in SD&G. They are offering a new DNA testing service and a tele-medicine walk-in clinic available on-site.

Pharmasave’s myDNA testing kit can be used to help their patients to determine the medication and quantity that is right for them.

“Based on our genetic code, we might process medications differently,” explained Pharmacist Bryan Haley. Haley said that knowing information about a patient’s DNA make up

can take a lot of guess work out of prescribing medication. “It can potentially save a lot of trial and error if you have that info.”

Patients can go to the Pharmasave in Long Sault to get a simple throat swab test kit. The test costs $149 to test one medication or $199 for a complete panel. Results are usually returned in 10 to 15 days.

“I think it is a very powerful tool and we are a very service-oriented pharmacy,” said Haley.

The information learned through the myDNA test can be shared with a patient’s General Practitioner or deleted according to the patient’s wishes.

The United Counties of SD&G are currently experiencing a shortage of family doctors, but Pharmasave in Long Sault is installing a new service so that their patients always have accessible medical care.

The pharmacy has built a small tele-medicine walk-in clinic. The clinic allows patient to meet with a doctor via a two-way computer call.

The doctor could be based anywhere in Ontario and will be helped by a physician’s assistant who will be on-site with the patient facilitating the appointment.

“This service is mainly for mild illnesses and for patients over four-years-old,” said Haley.

The entry fee will be $65 each person and will include a lovely three-course meal, wine,

All proceed will be going towards supporting the Agape Centre and helping people in need in our area. Celebrating 100 happy years Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario – On Monday, June 4, Mary Walton turned 100-years-old. She celebrated her century milestone birthday with several close friends and family at McConnell Manor.

“If somebody asks me how old I am, I usually say ‘well, you should know, I’m 16!’” said Walton with a laugh.

Walton was given a congratulatory letter from Guy Lauzon and our Prime Minister, as well as a letter from Queen Elizabeth II and the Governor General of Canada. She was also presented with a plaque that will be on the Hall of Fame at McConnell Manor with other residents who have turned 100.

Lawrence Mask, the Secretary of CN Pensioners Association Inc., presented Walton with a plaque and wished her a happy birthday

on behalf of the CN Rail Pension Committee.

“This is the most wonderful thing I’ve seen!” said Walton when she received the plaque.

Nancy McAteer, Walton’s daughter, gave an emotional speech detailing the journeys of her parents and how they came to settle in Moose Creek. She thanked her mother for her successful upbringing and unconditional encouragement.

Walton gave an inspiring speech, thanking the CN Rail Pension Committee for their support. She also proudly showed everyone one of her most treasured items: a t-shirt that was made for her on her 80th birthday, which has a cartoon figure of each of her five children with their name inscribed below. On the back of the shirt is her name with a flower.

“Now, what else do I treasure? You people!

You people,” she said to her fellow residents at the Manor. “Now what would I do if I didn’t have

you? You never ever let me down.”

Walton was gifted with a beautiful cake that had her favourite past times represented on it: gardening, sewing, knitting and playing bridge.

She successfully blew out 100 candles at another party on the weekend.

“I did a lot of travelling. A lot, a lot,” said Walton, remembering some of her favourite memories. Walton enjoyed travelling with her husband, but after his passing she enjoyed travelling alone too. Sometimes she wishes she could have gotten to see South Africa.

Walton is happy to be in Cornwall celebrating her 100th birthday and is looking forward to the years to come.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The striking Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) councils representing the City of Cornwall’s librarians, outdoor workers, inside workers and paramedics have rejected the City of Cornwall’s “final” offer.

The City made their offer on May 15, the day before the strike began.

The union’s negotiating team rejected that offer the same day and refused to take it to their

Monday night, CUPE announced in a press release that their members had rejected the offer by 92.5 percent against.

“The City asked us to take their last offer directly to our members, and we have done that, using the documents submitted by the employer to the Ministry of Labour last week,” CUPE wrote in a media release. “Our members have voted, and we have communicated the results to

the City of Cornwall. We expect they will respect the democratic outcome of these votes.”

“CUPE has invited the City right back to the bargaining table for tomorrow, Tuesday June 5,” the media release continued. “CUPE is prepared to do all we can at the bargaining table to resolve this quickly, and return vital services to normal for Cornwall residents. Will the City commit to do the same?”

The City has yet to respond to the results of the vote.

The Big Give graces Cornwall with charity Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario – On Saturday, June 2, three churches in the city participated in The Big Give. Attendees could donate or take from a rummage sale, and services were provided by hairdressers, a nail technician and a massage therapist.

“We like to take advantage of opportunities to bless the community,” said Miia Naugler, The Big Give coordinator for the Harvest Christian Fellowship. “We thought this would be a great opportunity to do that. So everything was free. People like to give when they’re getting something.

They have a hard time just being blessed without feeling that they have to contribute something back.”

Naugler is a member of the Harvest Christian Fellowship and has been organizing The Big Give at her church for the last four years. The church had over 20 volunteers helping with this year’s event.

According to Naugler, Immanuel Christian Reformed Church has also been participating in The Big Give for the last four years, and The First Baptist Church of Cornwall participated for the first time this year. This year 130 churches participated across Canada.

“One of the great things about this event is people were able to get some of their practical needs met with furniture and appliances, but there were also a lot of things that people want like toys and clothes – just things that a lot of us take for granted. We can receive blessing and we can give blessing and I think that’s something people tend to forget,” said Naugler.

Chelsea Looyen, 11, a volunteer at The Big Give, also volunteers with the church’s media team and children’s group, and she has spearheaded a Bible study group at her elementary school. Looyen said she loves her church and likes to take initiative whenever possible.

Naugler believes that teaching practical skills to children within the church is essential for life experience. Children have the opportunity to volunteer within a multimedia team and at a café, located in the church.

“I think it’s important for the community to have opportunities for people to be generous with what they have, and with their time. But it’s also important for people to be able to receive that generosity,” said Naugler.

Calling it quits after 40 years Sultan Jessa LONG SAULT: On. – A dedicated and community minded gastroenterologist has decided to call it quits after serving the Cornwall area community for over 40 years.

“It was a difficult decision to make,” admitted Dr. Baldev Singh Soodan. “I enjoyed serving community, stretching from Cornwall to Alexandria.”

Born in 1944, Dr. Soodan received his medical degree from Jammu and Kashmir Medical College in India in 1969. He worked in India for a couple of years and left for United Kingdom in 1972 to do his residency.

His next stop was in London, Ontario before moving to the Seaway city. Dr. Soodan initially trained in internal medicine and then specialized in gastroenterology. He also spent three years training as a gastroenterologist at the University of Ottawa. While in Ottawa, he contacted several medical doctors in Cornwall who assured him the city needed and could do with a full time gastroenterologist.

Dr. Soodan and his wife Dilbagh moved to Cornwall where their two children, Harveen, now a hospitalist in Chicago, Illinois, and son Baldeep, who is in hotel management in Ottawa, were born.

“I have gone through many changes in Cornwall over the years,” he said” The biggest was the amalgamation of the existing Hotel Dieu Hospital and Cornwall General Hospital into what is now the Cornwall community Hospital.”

Dr. Soodan started serving the Glengarry Memorial Hospital in Alexandria in 1992.

“I enjoyed excellent working relations at all hospitals with the medical staff and nurses.”

Dr. Soodan thoroughly enjoys boating and numerous water sports and the couple also plan to travel to exotic destinations.

UCDSB approves budget with $1.8 million deficit for 2018-2019 Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media BROCKVILLE, Ontario – On May 23, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) approved it’s 2018-2019 budget. The budget has a deficit of $1.8 million. The total expense budget passed is $415, 200, 000.

“If we don’t eventually replace that deficit with a surplus, what happens is the ministry comes in and starts running our schools, and the way we spend money. The freedoms we enjoy, will no longer be there,” said Jeremy Armer, Trustee of Ward 7. Armer is an Investment Advisor and the only Trustee who voted against the budget. He encourages parents to contact their local Trustees and ask why they voted in favour of a deficit budget.

The Ministry requires the school board not to exceed the budget by one per cent to

maintain compliance, which in this case would be approximately $3.6 million according to Stephen Sliwa, Director of Education with the UCDSB. Sliwa said that the budget is related to a funding formula provided by the Ministry of Education.

“I know that in the last five years, since 2013, the board has had a range of budget outcomes— from balanced budgets, to surplus budgets, to on occasion a deficit budget,” Sliwa.

During the meeting it was stated that 83 per cent of the budget is a fixed cost around labour. Three pressure points of the remaining 17 per cent were mentioned: Special Education, student transportation and absent staff replacement costs. Sliwa said that a Deficit Reduction Plan will soon be created by staff and presented to Trustees for

their approval.

Trustees questioned if school programming will be affected by the budget during the meeting.

“I know they can find $1.5, or even $2 million in budget cuts where it wouldn’t affect programming,” said Armer. “To do that to the next board coming in, I was really disappointed. We owe it to the public to have a balanced budget. We should be able to deliver our programming within the money that we’ve been given. If not, I don’t want to be a part of this board. It’s embarrassing.”

Sliwa feels that whether elected officials are experienced or new, there won’t be any issues with them handling the deficit budget.

“I truly hope that Board staff have taken into consideration the many students in this area who will opt to attend the co-terminus

board now that they can start it right after Grade 6 at St. Joseph’s,” said Jennifer MacIsaac, a parent with a child in the UCDSB. “That being said, competing for students has never been top of mind for this Board.

Perhaps many Trustees don’t plan on running in the next election and aren’t concerned about what sort of budget constraints they are leaving for the next Board who will be elected this fall.”

“We are compliant with the ministry, as we are being told by our finance people,” said Caroll Carkner, Trustee of Ward 10 during the meeting. “Seeing those minus numbers don’t scare me quite as much when we’re compliant. We can only hope and pray that we have increased enrolment, so our budget will increase whenever we find the kids in the seats in September.”

Hospice butterfly release June 24 Shawna O’Neill Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario- The third annual Wings of Love Butterfly Release will be happening this year at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. The event is open to anyone who has lost a loved one and will be held at Nav Canada.

“It doesn’t have to be for someone who passed away at Hospice, it’s open to the public,” said the Fundraising Coordinator Sandy Collette.

Butterflies will cost $30 and tax receipts of $20 will be provided. This year there are 200 butterflies available. Last year’s event raised $4,200.

Mike McAnany and Melissa Dionne will be singing before the butterflies are released.

“It’s quite an emotional event,” said Collette.

The painted lady butterflies are being provided from Monsieur Papillon in Quebec.

Is it all about the sick leave?

In a recent CBC story, Cornwall City Councillor Andre Rivette said that a main point of contention in this ongoing strike is the amount of pay that workers receive while they are on sick leave.

According to the CBC, through Andre Rivette, workers receive 100 percent of their pay while on long-term sick leave, which could last up-to 17 weeks. Rivette said to the CBC that the City wanted to see union workers take a 25 percent pay cut while on longterm sick leave. Neither the City of Cornwall administration, nor the union would confirm any of what Rivette told the CBC, but the union did say that the amount of sick leave its workers receive varies based on factors like position and presumably seniority.

Now, as someone who gets five days of sick leave, 17 weeks seems like a lot. I don’t

know many jobs that give that much longterm sick leave. However, I will admit, that if I came down with a serious illness, I would not want to have to worry about losing my job.

I do feel however, that the City is not being unreasonable in its demand to reduce the pay of workers on sick leave. Maybe, a 25 percent cut in pay is too much, but there must be an acceptable solution that can be reached.

When a worker is out on long-term sick leave, the City and the taxpayer have to pay more to get their work done. Either by paying overtime to other employees to carry the extra load, or by paying contractors to cover the sick employee’s responsibilities.

As I said, an employee should not have to worry about losing their job while they’re sick, but the City also has to worry about how it will meet its budget priorities and ful-

fill their service obligations.

Ultimately, I’ll echo what I wrote in my column last week, whatever the issues are at the table, it is our dollars and our services that will be affected so as the ones who are affected, we should have a say before a deal

is signed that we will have to live with for years to come.

Dear Editor, The lack of a binding arbitration agreement between the City of Cornwall and Paramedics has resulted in significantly decreased paramedic coverage in Cornwall and SD&G. Having 2-3 ambulances on the road to cover over 3,300KM2, is unacceptable and dangerous. It’s not a matter of if preventable tragedies will strike community members, but rather a question of when and how many members?

I fear for individuals in rural communities, where access to the “taxis” and “buses” the City of Cornwall radio advertisements suggest we take to the hospital, won’t be available. Has the City forgotten that the paramedics they are responsible to oversee, also service these rural

communities?

I fear for individuals in rural communities who won’t have access to life-saving, timesensitive, medical interventions, as they travel 40+ minutes to the hospital in their personal vehicles, with panicked family members, friends, neighbors – or worse, themselves - at the wheel.

I fear for individuals in rural communities who do not have access to a vehicle at all.

I fear for our children experiencing a severe allergic reaction, our siblings in serious motor vehicle accidents, our parents and grandparents going into cardiac arrest, and the list goes on… Individuals in any of these scenarios could be subjected to life-ending wait times for emergency care due to significantly

decreased levels of paramedic coverage.

When employees are unionized, and a collective agreement cannot be agreed upon, the unionized employees strike. This is common knowledge. The City of Cornwall, aware of this reality, refuses to acknowledge paramedics as essential and refer negotiations to binding arbitration. Doing so would have avoided this strike. Other communities have agreed to binding arbitration – why can’t we?

Allowing paramedics to be treated as nonessential and therefore, allowing them to strike, is an insult to the profession, and threatens the well-being of Cornwall and SD&G residents.

If you have a loved one that you care about in this region, you should be outraged.

This letter is adapted from an email that was sent to the mayor and council members on Monday May 28th.The Mayor called me in response to the original email, and shared that no one else had voiced any concerns about the lower level of paramedic coverage. Larry Holmes, who with one of the most lethal left jabs in the game ruled the heavyweight boxing world for seven years and fought until he was 52 (he’s 69), talked about how good life has been for a grade school dropout who grew up in a poor family living in the projects where it is so easy for a black kid to take a wicked wrong turn in life.

He dropped out of school to work in a car wash for $1 an hour and help out his family.

Then, at age 19, he took up boxing at a local gym. It was a life changer.

He owes it all, he pointed out, to a boxing career, hard work ... and his wife, Diane, of 38 years, who could be described as the “secret weapon” in his success story, particularly in navigating his post-fight career.

Holmes apprenticed for five years as a sparring partner for first Joe Frazer at $350 a week, then Muhammad Ali, who upped it to $500 a week.

In 1980 Holmes battered the former champ for 10 rounds before Ali’s corner threw in the towel. It was a lopsided victory Holmes couldn’t celebrate.

“In the clinches I kept telling him to give up, that I didn’t want to hurt him too bad,” said Holmes.

Holmes made millions of dollars during his career. And, unlike so many of his peers, he

managed to keep most of it. He invested in real estate. These days he earns six-figure appearance fees for corporate events in places like Las Vegas.

“When I speak to kids, I tell them that if I can make it, so can they. It just takes a lot of hard work,” he said.

Holmes, travelling from his home in Easton, Penn., made a guest appearance with his former foe and now good friend Gerry Cooney for the May 26 amateur Boxing for Change charity event at the Ed Lumley Arena.

“An absolute gentleman,” said Sean Adams, who talked Holmes into joining his old foe Cooney for the Cornwall Treatment Centre fundraiser.

Of the relationship, Diane Holmes calls it, “Foes for a night, friends for a lifetime.”

The gracious Holmes stole the show, which wasn’t unexpected.

“He was so good,” said Adams. “He’d go over and talk to the (young) losers and give them a pat on the back and offer them a tip or two.”

Back in 1982 champion Holmes and Cooney, No. 1 contender, staged one of the greatest heavyweight championship bouts of all time.

Holmes scored a 13th-round TKO when Cooney ran out of gas.

“I wasn’t ready for the fight (to go so long),” said Cooney, who had just one fight in the previous 12 months, an early first-round upset knockout of top ranked Ken Norton.

Unscrupulous promoter Don King slapped “The Great White Hope” label on Cooney, something the challenger didn’t want any part of.

“He did it to hype the fight (and make more

The Great White Hope thing stirred the racial pot. Holmes received death threats from white supremacists. One threat, from the Ku Klux Klan, said Holmes would be shot as he stepped into the ring. Police snipers were stationed on roof tops surrounding Caesars Palace parking lot where the fight was being staged.

Dear Editor, Indeed a topic but let’s not pretty it Mr. B.F. Wells. Euthanize means “kill” all the feral cats a point not felt by all community members. This week indeed I had to compassionately euthanize a cat due to age and illness, a void in my heart now grieving his loss as many pet owners have to face in life one day. All money spent in the last couple months to extend his life worth it compared to the laughter and joy this cat brought to my life.

The Chamber of Commerce Golf tournament took place on Wednesday, June 6 at Summerheights Golf Links and on Friday, the Knight’s of Columbus are holding their third annual Hospice Golf Classic.

Taking place at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club this event has raised $49,000 for Carefor Hospice Cornwall since it first began in 2016.

Jean Lemay, conseiller scolaire du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO), à la présidence de l’AFOCSC. Conseiller scolaire pour la Cité de ClarenceRockland depuis plus de 32 ans, M. Lemay a été président à plusieurs reprises du CSDCEO. M. Lemay est un francophone catholique qui est engagé au sein de sa communauté. En 2014, M. Lemay s’est vu attribuer un prix prestigieux de la Fédération nationale des conseils scolaires francophones (FNCSF) lorsque cet organisme lui a décerné le Prix Jean-Robert Gauthier pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à l’éducation en langue française.

L’AFOCSC agit en tant que porte-parole des conseils scolaires catholiques de langue française en Ontario. • modifier la Loi de 2007 sur les impôts pour éliminer la surtaxe et la remplacer par de nouveaux taux et fourchettes d’imposition pour l’impôt sur le revenu des particuliers de l’Ontario; • relever le taux maximum du crédit d’impôt de l’Ontario pour des dons de bienfaisance (CIODB) non remboursable de 11,15 % à 17,5 % pour les dons de plus de 200 $.

Ces changements devraient accroître les recettes provinciales annuelles de 275 millions de dollars en 2018-2019.

La déclaration du Nouveau parti démocratique de l’Ontario indique que s’il forme le gouvernement après l’élection du 7 juin 2018, le parti a l’intention de prendre les mesures suivantes : • modifier la Loi de 2007 sur les impôts pour augmenter l’impôt sur les bénéfices des sociétés d’un point de pourcentage en 2019-2020 et de 0,5 point de pourcentage en 2021-2022. Cette mesure augmentera les recettes d’un montant estimé à 1,3 milliard de dollars en 2019-2020; • modifier la Loi de 2007 sur les impôts pour augmenter d’un pour cent le taux d’imposition sur les revenus de plus de 220 000 $ et de deux points de pourcentage le taux d’imposition sur les revenus de plus de 300 000 $; • supprimer l’exonération de l’impôt-santé des employeurs pour les petites entreprises dont la masse salariale dépasse 3 millions de dollars en 2019-2020 et pour celles dont la masse salariale dépasse 1,5 million de dollars en 2021-2022. Ces modifications à la Loi sur l’impôt-santé des employeurs permettront de recueillir 159 millions de dollars en 2019-2020;

• instaurer un nouvel impôt sur la spéculation immobilière pour les spéculateurs canadiens et étrangers qui possèdent des logements dans les régions où l’impôt sur la spéculation pour les non-résidents de l’Ontario s’applique et qui ne paient pas d’impôt en Ontario. Cet impôt, qui sera établi à 5 $ par tranche de 1 000 $ de valeur imposable et qui passera à 20 $ par tranche de 1 000 $ de valeur imposable en 2019, générera des recettes de 168 millions de dollars en 2018-2019.

Comme l’exige le paragraphe 4 (4) de la Loi, le directeur général des élections a examiné ces déclarations et est d’avis qu’elles sont conformes aux paragraphes 4 (2) et 4 (3) de la Loi. Adult Responsibilities John Milnes Consider This

Walking through any community, today, one will see scruffy looking men dressed in obviously oversized, baggy pants, often at low mast, or women wearing jeans that have purposefullymade holes in the knees. Then there is the unkempt hair that appears not to have seen a hairbrush or hairdresser in years; or strange styles and colouring for those who have.

Men have allowed themselves to be less careful in their dress since the neck tie, a symbol of good appearance, is now all but gone from the dress code, It is seemingly thought to be

better to look untidy! Such sloppy appearances are a deterioration of reasonable human standards and surely a major reason our young take no pride in their appearance. If the adults don’t care why should they?

To get what I am talking about one only has to watch the scruffy looking products the ‘modern’ society is creating as they file into the district High Schools. Are these seedy-looking characters youngsters of whom we can be proud? Have we not set the wrong example for youngsters who are a reflection of the adults in their lives? Who is to blame for the unacceptable appearances of our modern day youth?

The adults, of course, those who allow themselves to be fooled into believing this is a good example to set.

When an adult pays more money for a pair of

purposefully-damaged jeans than some families spend on food for a whole month then our society needs to take a good look at itself. It cannot be intelligent to be seen walking around in worn-out jeans, with tatty fabric hanging loosely around the holes.

Next we have the tattoo freaks; tattoos blotched all over the body only add to a scruffy image. Perhaps few bearers of these body adornments realise the tattoo is a creation of our prisons, where the idle hands of bored inmates created the style. It surely is not a good sign that the masses in society follow the patterns set by prison inmates.

Hair in many varied colours, strange hair styles, rings dangling from the ears of both men and women and other body parts pierced and/ or tattooed for attention seeking adornment.

This type of decoration may give some folks a lifestyle variety but, really, it simply shows how the crowd can foolishly be led by a questionable leader. Such souls only show how society has, in fact, lost its individuality; the masses in society are being controlled! Modern adults are being led by the nose down the avenue of poor images and they have no idea how they are being manipulated.

The exercise, for anyone who thinks the modern dress code is good, might well be to stand before a full length mirror and ask her/ himself three honest questions. Am I truly presentable? Am I a credit to the society in which I live? Am I a good role model for my children?

Each person must be their own judge but I wonder if those who must follow others, so blindly, have the willingness to do that.

North Glengarry incumbent not seeking re-election Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media NORTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – After eight years as Mayor and almost 20 years on council, incumbent Chris McDonell has decided to retire.

“It’s a young man’s job,” said McDonell.

“There’s a lot of meetings. I enjoyed my time though. I had a good career at it and I think I did alright.”

Before his career in politics, McDonell was a police officer with OPP. He will miss working with the public as he enjoyed serving and

bettering his community. McDonell worked in various positions within municipal politics since 2000, including acting as SDG Counties Warden in 2009.

One of the projects that McDonell is most proud of during his time as Mayor is the Maxville Water Project.

“It’s a $30 million project, its good for the area, good for the community and necessary for Maxville,” said McDonell.

Char-Lan District High School student Julia Richards took a few medals home from the EOSSA track and field meet, nabbing gold in the triple jump, silver in the 400m hurdles and bronze in the 200m dash.

The unions rejected the City’s “final” offer this week. What I don’t understand is why the City wanted to force the vote on this offer. The union rejected it before the strike even began and this vote just makes that official.

The Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation (CCHF) announced that they received a $9,500 donation from the Cornwall Lions Club. The Lions Club raised the money as a part of their Lobster Feed held on May 25. The money is a first installment of a $46,000 pledge from the Lions for the purchase of new technology to assist with cataract surgery at the hospital.

Cornwall Living launched last week. It has been 25 years since Cornwall’s premier magazine began printing. Every year Cornwall Living Magazine features the best that Cornwall has to offer and showcases it to the world.

When we go camping, our canoe is heavily loaded with essentials: food (frozen items for the first two days), a tent, lots of drinking water (plus a water purifier in case we want to extend our stay), some reading material (if rain confines us to our tent), some wellseasoned hardwood firewood, writing material (immersion in nature stimulates creativity) and a generous supply of birch bark. (No, I do not write on birch bark.)

In our style of canoeing and camping, a weight-limit is never a consideration because the only portaging we do is from my pickup truck to the water’s edge. I have no desire to become a Sherpa, donkey or any other beast of burden. At my age, any portage longer than the 60’ 6” distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate is out of the question.

Camping without a campfire would be like a sundae without ice cream, a movie without popcorn or a wedding without a ring. A campfire’s glow is the wilderness equal of TV as post-sunset entertainment.

We carry enough hardwood with us to provide a couple of hours of cheery warmth after the sun slips below the horizon.

Getting a thick piece of inadequately seasoned firewood to ignite is like pushing a cart uphill with a wet rope. However, placing strips of birch bark, then some twigs and branches, under several pieces of carefully split well-aged firewood gives you a RollsRoyce campfire.

The place to relax after a day of paddling is around a campfire. Carefully fed, it will provide warmth and a pleasant glow until almost every star has been counted and the last story has been told. The presence of a spellbound audience, the background eerie calls of the loons, the yipping of the coyotes and the hooting of the owls encourage stirring tales of long-ago travels and adventures.

As John Geddes once said, “Light a campfire and everyone’s a storyteller.”

And who is this John Geddes you’re quoting?” Until I consulted with my favourite lexicon, Mr. Google, I had no idea. Was he the 18th century Scottish bishop? Maybe the 19th century American politician? How about the 20th century British cyclist or the American journalist who was once associated with the New York Times? I lean toward the John Geddes of MacLean’s magazine being the source of that quote.

Let’s discuss it around our next gathering around a campfire. I’ll bring the birch bark, you bring some stories to tell.
