DUNVEGAN, Ontario - Blacksmiths from around the region and beyond gathered at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum this past weekend.

It was all a part of the third annual Smith-in at the museum. Around 20 blacksmiths in total were on-site demonstrating and practicing their trade.

Smiths came from as far away as Quebec City, Georgetown and the United States.

The smiths were making equipment like an 18th century hacksaw and an 18th century barrel using period tools like an antique bellows and an antique military forge cart.

“I think it is a great thing,” said Lloyd Johnston, a fifth-generation blacksmith from Georgetown, Ontario. “It is a great opportunity for people to get interested and learn.”

One local blacksmith was Pat Taylor, of Monkland, who has been smithing for 40 years.

“My dad made horseshoes,” said Taylor when asked how he got into the trade. “This goes hand in hand with that.”

Next weekend, the Glengarry Pioneer Museum will be holding their annual Historical Driving Tour.

This year the tour will be going through Dunvegan, Greenfield, Maxville, Sandringham and Apple Hill.

“At this time of year, we are extremely low on canned foods,” said Lynne Groulx, Fund Development Coordinator with the Agapè Centre. She explained that donations to the Agapè Centre tend to dip in the summer months. “Our need stays the same, we have 100

to 160 people using our soup kitchen daily and our food bank served 125 families a week.”

The Wine Rack has a goal of 1,000 pounds of goods, and $500 in gift cards for local grocery stores which will be donated to the Agapè Centre.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Council rejected a motion on Monday, June 11, 2018 that an Integrity Commissioner be hired to investigate the behaviour of Councillor Mark MacDonald.

In late April, Councillor Claude McIntosh asked that Councillor MacDonald’s behavior be investigated after he sent emails to council members, including himself, in which he called McIntosh a “possible liar”.

MacDonald made the comments in the context of the City budget deliberations that were ongoing at the time. MacDonald, McIntosh, and others had signed a pledge at the last municipal election to not raise taxes, something that McIntosh now says does not live up to the realities of governance.

McIntosh asked that MacDonald’s behaviour be reviewed by the Provincial Ombudsman, the Ombudsman however, does not investigate such matters, so the City could have to hire an Integrity Commissioner.

“We have a Code of Conduct, but we don’t have any way of enforcing the Code of Conduct,” said McIntosh. “If I had been offered an apology, I would have declined it. If we can do that in an email, then I could stand here and tell Councillor Murphy what I thought of him and get away with it,” McIntosh went on to say.

“First of all, I would like to apologise if I hurt anybody’s feelings,” replied MacDonald.

MacDonald said he read the Code of Conduct and looked for how he might have violated it.

“If I did violate something, then show me exactly where because I couldn’t find that I did,” he said. “I was told by Councillor Clement to choose my words carefully and I did. I think it is a colossal, colossal waste of time and money.”

City Clerk Manon Levesque referred Councillor MacDonald to Section 17.5 of the Code of Conduct which outlines the professional language that a Councillor was expected to use in their communications.

“I think we are expected to live up to a certain standard here,” said Councillor Elaine MacDonald. “There is no place for ad hominem comments. I think when you use terms like that, you violate a civil code that supersedes our own simple code of conduct. We aren’t talking about the sensitivity of an individual, we are talking about the right or wrongness of an action.”

A recorded vote saw the motion to hire an Integrity Commissioner fail with five votes in favour, four against and one abstention.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Trinity Anglican Church’s Drop In program provides a hearty meal and some meaningful connection for those who need it most.

Around 35 to 40 people take part in the program, and Trinity Church priest Peter Cazaly says that the goal is to make people’s lives a little easier.

“Anybody who wants to drop in can,” he said. “But most of these people quite frankly are struggling economically.”

The program started in January 2017. The

Agapè Centre supports the program with food when they can spare it, and Cazaly sends them referrals of members who need their services.

Cazaly says that the people who show up are usually pretty consistent, but that he does see new people about everyday.

“It isn’t just breakfast,” he said. “It is a sense of community.”

In addition to breakfast, members of the Drop In group also play cards, catch up on the news, and some even seek one-on-one counselling with Cazaly.

“People talk to me about issues they are struggling with,” he said. “That could be finan-

cial, or personal.”

Last week, Cazaly was honoured with an award from the Community Ministries of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa. He was recognized for starting a new community ministry outside of Ottawa.

In addition to the usual breakfast, Cazaly and Drop In members also celebrated with a cake.

How about getting involved in a stage show, make a music video or taking part in a funny Zombie Movie! All of this and more will be taking place at this summer’s Dream Maker Acting/Music Camp! For 27 years Dream Maker has brought together thousands of area young people to share and develop the wonderful gift of imagination. Young people have a chance to do things that can typically only be achieved in larger cities like Toronto and Montreal. A unique aspect of the camp will be the filming of the Zombie Movie. It is all about a group of kids at a camp who come across another group from past generations who have all become zombies. Instead of running from them or fighting them, the kids in the movie try to help the zombies. However, this is not easy feat, considering zombies are not easy to reason with! The one key element that the young people notice is that when music is playing the young zombies break out into dance. The kids use this to their

advantage until the batteries on their music player run low. This is where the real fun begins‌!

This well-rounded arts program will teach improvisation skills, speech projection, makeup, role-playing, scene development, and musical theatre, as well as many other activities! The last day features a live stage show for family and friends and the camp is taught by professionals who work in the business! It is held at the civic complex, which means there will be access to the park, the splash pad, and opportunity for swimming!

CORNWALL, Ontario – The third annual Knights of Columbus Golf Classic for Carefor Hospice Cornwall teed off at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 8.

“We have a full menu of people who are out here today, and we’re going to have a great day with the sunshine on our side,” said Lionel Lauzon, the Chairman and Coordinator of the event.

Lauzon said that last year the event raised $17,000, and coordinators are hoping to raise approximately the same amount this year. Since 2016, the tournament has fundraised $49,000 for Hospice. All proceeds will go to patient care, helping to fund required equipment like lift out chairs, mattresses, a Hoyer lift and a palliative chair. Since Hospice opened in 2009, over 1,700 residents have received care. This year there has been an

CORNWALL, Ontario - Courtauld’s has been closed for 26 years now, but for the ladies who worked there the comradery is still going strong.

Twice a year, the ladies of Courtaulds get together to remember the good times. This year, they celebrated “25 years of friendship” at Terri Mitchell’s home on June 10.

“We miss it, yes, we miss a lot of the work that we did do and the friendships that we had, and in this way, we get to continue that with each

other,” said Mitchell.

Terri had been at Courtaulds right to the end of December of 1992 and is the glue that keeps their group stuck together by orchestrated their reunions.

The group consists of close to 20 employees that meet twice a year when the weather is good, sometimes going for dinner at the Blue Anchor or even just a potluck like the one they had this Sunday.

“It was a really good working climate because there were no scandals, we all got along pretty well,” said Chris Kamenz a colleague of Terri’s.

PC’s win majority government, McDonell retains seat in SD&SG CORNWALL, Ontario - The Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Party won a majority government in the provincial election on Thursday, June 7, 2018. This is the third time that McDonell has been elected the MPP for Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry and the first time he will serve in the government at Queen’s Park.

At last check, with 59 of 87 riding polls reporting, McDonell secured18,793 votes out of a total of 31,769 votes cast.

NDP candidates Marc Benoit won 7,280 votes, Heather Megill of the Ontario Liberals secured 4,343 votes, Elaine Kennedy of the Greens took 1,330 and Sabile Trimm of the Libertarian party brought in 289 votes.

McDonell described his vision for Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry in 2022 after four years of PC rule.

“I think we’ve lost a lot of business and industry over the years and we need to bring that back,” he said.

McDonell explained that the next steps after this victory was to meet with caucus sometime next week and get a lot of work done over the summer in preparation for the beginning of the new legislature in September.

The Nijmegen march Provided by Warrant Officer Kyle Bergeron of the SD&G Highlanders CORNWALL, Ontario - The Nijmegen March is held annually in the Netherlands. It starts every year on the third Tuesday of July and is the largest multiple day marching event in the world. The 50 000 participants each year are mostly civilians, but militaries from around the world also enter teams into the march. The Canadian Armed Forces have been participating in the Nijmegen March since 1952. This year, they are sending 14 teams comprised of over 200 personnel. Each team consists of 11 personnel, including 1 medic and 1 person who has previously participated in the march. The SD&G Highlanders have been selected as one of those teams, to celebrate the unit’s 150th anniversary.

The SD&G Highlanders have already begun training for the Nijmegen March. The Canadian Armed Forces requires interested members to complete at least 500km of training marches,

although typically the average soldier will complete over 700km of training prior to departing.

The march itself will be 40km a day for 4 days for a total of 160km. Over the next several months the SD&G Highlanders will be training up to 4 times a week, working from 5km to 40km marches. The unit will be more and more visible in the community as we prepare for Nijmegen.

The 4-day march in the Netherlands has been taking place since 1909, having started as a Dutch military training exercise. It has been permanently stationed in Nijmegen since 1916 and has taken place every year except during the two World Wars. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, and is characterized by a combination of Roman ruins, 14th century architecture and post-war additions which serve as a reminder of the destruction the city endured during WWII. Each day of the march starts in Nijmegen and is named after the biggest town that it goes through. Tuesday is the day of Elst, Wednesday the day of Wijchen, Thursday the day of Groesbeek and Friday the

day of Cuijk. Successful participants receive a Dutch decoration (the Cross for the Four Day Marches) and gladioli, a sword shaped plant that is associated with ancient gladiators.

As the SD&G Highlanders well know, Canada and the Netherlands have a very special friendship. Over a 9-month period during 1944 and 1945, a Canadian-led coalition made up of mostly Canadians, but also Polish, Belgian, American, British and Dutch resistance fighters liberated The Netherlands from the Germans.

Dutch citizens, who were facing starvation, saw the Canadians not only as liberators but saviours. 7 600 Canadians died liberating The Netherlands, including 11 SD&G Highlanders who died liberating the town of Leesten. Grade school students would have elected a majority NDP government Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media ONTARIO - At 4 p.m. today, the results of over 280,000 student votes were calculated. The province-wide Student Vote elected Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP to form a majority government with 66 seats, 32 per cent of the popular vote.

The PC Party of Ontario formed the opposition

with 45 seats and 27 per cent of the vote. The Liberal Party of Ontario won 11 seats and 19 per cent of the vote, while The Green Party of Ontario won two seats and 13 per cent of the vote.

“What makes this even more incredible is the timing. This is the busiest time of year for schools with culminating activities, EQAO testing and exams, and more than 6,000 teachers have made Student Vote a priority,” said Taylor Gunn,

President and CEO of CIVIX in a press release.

Students voted for candidates in their districts after learning about the electoral process, researching party platforms and issues, and debating about the future of Ontario.

In total, 2,166 schools, representing all 124 electoral districts in the province participated.

There were exactly 280,961 ballots cast by student participants. There were 268, 091 accepted

ballots, 7,103 rejected ballots, 2,562 declined ballots and 2,935 unmarked ballots.

Student participation increased by more than 60 per cent in comparison to the 2014 Ontario provincial election. In 2014, 173, 072 votes were cast from 1,388 schools, electing a Liberal majority. This Student Vote project was made possible

by Elections Ontario, and it is the fifth provincewide Student Vote project conducted.

Progressive Conservative incumbent Jim McDonell was re-elected for a third time as MPP for Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry last Thursday.

This is the first time that he will serve on the government’s side of the isle since he was first elected to the legislature in 2011 and now that he is shaping policy, he must live up to the promises he and his party have made to the people of Ontario.

I spoke with Jim on election night and I asked him, what will his riding look like after four years of PC rule. What he told me was this: that Cornwall and the surrounding area had lost a lot of business and industry over the years and we need to bring that back. He also said that the region never really recovered from 2006 and the loss of the Domtar plant.

So, we have our first promise, bring back business and industry to Cornwall and SD&G. During this transition period, McDonell’s office should reach out to the builders and developers

in our local economy to find out what they plan for the future and what they need to bring more business and industry to the region.

If McDonell is focused on business and job creation, he should be speaking with local Economic Development Officers like Bob Peters, Shawna Baggs, Tara Kirkpatrick and the rest. He should also reach out organizations like the Cornwall Innovation Centre, which are dedicated to bringing tomorrow’s jobs to our area.

This is something that McDonell can do independently to help co-ordinate and spur economic growth in Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry. Other promises that he’s made will depend on the priorities of his party.

Many of the promises from McDonell and his party will live and die by their first budget. For instance, McDonell said that his party intends to shift some of the burden off of municipalities.

During Cornwall’s most recent budget battle, one reason cited for the increasing burden on residential taxpayers was because of less funding from senior levels of government.

According to McDonell, his party will increase the funding that the province gives to munici-

palities by $70 million.

When the first PC budget is tabled, presumably this fall, we will be able to see where this new government’s priorities are and if municipalities are really one of them.

McDonell’s success in this third term as MPP will be measured by how many promises he is

able to deliver on, everything else will be icing on the cake.

letters to editor To the Editor: The City Council and my office have been fielding questions about the strike and our reluctance to comment about the issues which have led to it. I wanted to take this opportunity to make our reasons clear. We appreciate that the public have a desire to know about issues that affect them and the City in which they live, especially when it comes to something as important as a strike by the employees who provide the services which our citizens rely on every day.

The first important principle is that we believe that to minimize misunderstandings and provide the best chance of a successful outcome to this disruption, we should not engage in negotiations in the media. Every time the position of one or both of the parties is discussed publicly, our citizens and other

stakeholders get a narrow view of the process and issues without the necessary context which has developed over months of bargaining. For example, some may wonder why the parties are not at the bargaining table all day, every day until the issue is resolved. The answer is simple, bargaining has been going on for months and the parties have reached a point at which one side feels that it cannot offer more and the other side is dissatisfied with that position.

Second, while the public has an understandable desire to know what is happening, we also owe it to them to conduct ourselves in accordance with the Labour Relations Act and not incur any unnecessary risks and legal costs associated with making irresponsible or premature statements. If a statement were to be misinterpreted, misquoted or if it violated the

Act, the City could face penalties and our position at the bargaining table could be undermined. The legislation permits us to make certain statements, but during a strike, sensitivities are understandably high on both sides and a comment that may not be a violation of the Labour Relations Act may still give rise to timeconsuming and expensive litigation that will do nothing to advance the position of the parties or lead to a better outcome. We feel that rather than risk incurring this unnecessary expense and complication, as well as the misunderstandings that can arise by commenting about only a portion of the overall story, we are all better off if Council does not comment other than to correct any inaccurate representations of our position. We are of the view that we should leave the negotiation and resolution of this matter to our professional

negotiators who are entrusted with ensuring that the mandate provided by Council is respected.

We understand that this strike is unsettling for many and affects everybody who lives in this City. We are balancing the need to find a fair outcome with the need to be fiscally responsible with the funds entrusted to us by the taxpayers. One of the ways to find this balance is to avoid potentially inflammatory public statements and maintain the integrity of the bargaining process. The parties are obviously locked in a serious disagreement, but despite our differences, negotiations have been carried on in good faith by both sides and we want that to continue.

Two of her children - 3 and 15 - were seriously injured in the fire. Fire Chief Corey Moore told Crown attorney P. C. Milligan that eight men were on duty when the call came, and all were sent, which meant nobody was left to even take calls. “Just eight men for a city of 40,000!” the attorney noted. It was also pointed out that the department had just one fire inspector. Off-duty fire fighter James Dunlop, a passerby, told the inquest how before firefighters arrived he smashed a basement window to get in and how he rescued the children and pulled the body of the woman from the home. The last provincial cabinet minister to represent a riding that included Cornwall was Fern Guindon, labour minister in the Bill Davis government.

The odds are that when Doug Ford unveils his cabinet, Guindon will still be the last Cornwallbased MPP to serve in cabinet.

There isn’t much chance of Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry MPP Jim McDonell making the cut.

First of all, he hasn’t expressed much interest in serving in cabinet. Second, even if he did he is up against some stiff competition for the two or three cabinet positions that will go to Eastern Ontario. There is a boatload of top talent from this neck of the province.

Long-time MPP Steve Clarke (LeedsGrenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes) will be named to cabinet. So will Nepean MPP Lisa McLeod. A strong contender for cabinet is newcomer Merrilee Fullerton, a retired doctor who will represent Kanata-Carleton. She could be considered for the health portfolio, while another newcomer, Amanda Simard, Glengarry-PrescottRussell might be a good fit for the francophone affairs slot. Then there is veteran RenfrewNipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski who won big again, this time finishing 25,288 votes ahead of his nearest rival. Randy Hillier,

Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP, might be too much of a loose cannon for cabinet.

One thing this cabinet won’t have is an attorney-general who once marched with a sign that said, “F.... the Cops”. **************** How can a country as great as the United States, a country with so much talent, get it so wrong when it comes to electing a president? In addressing in the House of Commons, President John F. Kennedy said of his country and Canada, “Let what nature has joined together let no man put asunder.” Well, Donald Trump is giving it his best shot. A few things Trump might not be aware of as he attacks this country: Canada was in the First and Second World Wars before the United States; while he was dodging the draft (four times) so he wouldn’t have to serve in Vietnam, 30,000 Canadians volunteered to fight with American forces, 134 died in combat; Canada was America’s most reliable partner in Afganistan; it was a Canadian diplomat (Ken Taylor) who smuggled six Americans out of Iran in 1980; and Canada took in 30,000 Americans when 239 flights were forced to land in this country during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. And talk about a trade imbalance, parts of Florida would have to shut down if Canadians stopped going there during the winter.

No matter where you live in Canada, winter can be rough on your car, even if it was stored in a nice, dry place. Indeed, any vehicle that has been kept unused or, worse, one that has been run during the harshest season of the year needs to be carefully detailed before we hit the warm days of summer.

Of course, each and every mechanical maintenance chore has to be done every spring, from the oil change to the tire inspection, and don’t forget the visual inspection for any loose or missing parts or burned lights. Cars and light trucks that were subjected to winter usage require even more attention.

They, too, need to see their drive train maintained, but more time must be spent cleaning and detailing the body. Even unseen parts of the car might be covered with salt, sand, and road dirt that have accumulated in the undercarriage and the trims. This kind of detailing requires a complete wash of the vehicle, starting with a going-over or two in a no-contact car wash (a car wash using only water spray, without brushes).

This step will remove the bulk of the grime. Nevertheless, such an operation always leaves behind a film of dirt or some light deposits behind the trim. That is where a manual wash comes in handy. Only the human eye can detect hidden dirt and give the vehicle the tender loving care it needs to stay nice and shiny for years. And only the human hand can give a car the super detailing touch it deserves for longer years of reliable use. Remember that next Saturday morning — if Mother Nature cooperates!

The café, bistro, and bakery moved from their previous location on Second St. to 109 Pitt St. in the heart of downtown.

Their previous location was quite small and

when the new location became available the decision to move was quite easy.

Tony Lacrois, the owner of Love Love Food started the food blog in 2011, and turned it into a restaurant 2 years later.

“Its a great block! We started downtown and I would never move away from downtown. It is people that work and live downtown that support us,” explained Tony Lacroix.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The United Way officially moved to a new office on June 1 at 55 Water Street unit 240.

“Our other location was a large office space,” said Stephanie Lalonde, the Campaign, Communications & Special Events Coordinator.

“We didn’t really need that much space, so we were looking for a new home for a while—a place that’s a little smaller. There’s only 3 of us in the office and it suits all of our needs.”

Lalonde is hoping that the new office will attract more clients because they are more centrally located. The building is wheelchair accessible and the layout offers more privacy com-

pared to the previous space.

According to Lalonde, the United Way posted a position today looking for a new, full-time, Operation and Fundraising Coordinator. More information about the job will be posted on their website soon. The public is welcome to attend the organization’s annual general meeting on June 19 at the SDG County Building in the Council Chamber at 8 p.m.

Lalonde said that although the move was a process, she is enjoying the new office.

“It’s giving us an opportunity to start fresh, reorganize the office, get things archived and have a more efficient way of running the office,” said Lalonde.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Les élèves de la douzième année du cours d’arts visuels de l’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle furent emballés d’accueillir l’artiste Dominique Boisvenue « Mique Michelle » dans le cadre d’un projet pour créer une murale du style graffiti qui met en valeur la justice sociale.

Mique Michelle, artiste graffiti aux racines Métis, est originaire de Field en Ontario et a partagé les origines du graffiti ainsi que les enjeux sociaux liés à l’art urbain pendant un atelier de deux jours avec les élèves-artistes les 28 et 29 mai. Mique a aidé les élèves à développer le concept final de la murale qui illustre une énorme vague d’eau qui se propage librement et fluidement sur les murs. La vague souligne le droit de la liberté du mouvement, un parmi les 30 droits humains. À l’intérieur de la murale se cachent plusieurs symboles qui illustrent de près ou de loin les éléments de la Charte des droits humains; lorsqu’ils sont respectés la justice sociale règne pour tous.

L’école est très reconnaissante d’avoir reçu une subvention du Ministère de l’Éducation, de la banque TD ainsi que du Club Richelieu de Cornwall, afin de créer cette murale significative.

Cette peinture captivante est située à l’entrée du débarcadère d’autobus où les élèves pourront

voir ses couleurs accueillantes et chaleureuses qui ont comme objectif d’inciter les élèves à connaître leurs droits et à être de véritables modèles positifs au sein de leurs pairs.

L’École secondaire catholique La Citadelle et son Pavillon intermédiaire comptent une population estudiantine de près de 600 élèves de la 7e à la 12e année. Le personnel dévoué de

l’école compte près d’une centaine de personnes et assure une éducation hors pair aux élèves de la région de Cornwall depuis plus de 40 ans.

grâce à l’appui provenant du programme Jeunesse Canada au Travail dans les organismes patrimoniaux du Gouvernement Canadien et le recrutement c’est fait par l’entremise du programme de coopérative de l’Université Carleton.

Le Registre des biens du patrimoine culturel du canton de Glengarry nord est un projet continu initié par le Comité consultatif pour les arts, la culture et le patrimoine. Au cours de la première phase du projet, les bénévoles ont fait l’inventaire des maisons en bois rond, des bâtiments en pierre et des sites religieux dans le canton. Ces bénévoles ont aussi dressé l’inventaire des propriétés situées sur les rues Main d’Alexandria et Maxville. L’été dernier l’étendue de l’inventaire dans les hameaux

d’Apple Hill, Dalkeith, Dominionville, Dunvegan, Glen Robertson, Glen Sandfield, Greenfield et Lochiel est venue appuyer la deuxième phase du Plan d’améliorations communautaires de la municipalité. La continuité de cet inventaire cet été viendra appuyer la troisième phase du Plan d’améliorations communautaires.

Le canton aimerait en même temps ajouter à son inventaire de photographies et profite de l’occasion pour demander au public de nous faire parvenir leurs photographies historiques des propriétés dans les hameaux. Ces photos seront numérisées et rendues à leurs propriétaires. Les élèves et le personnel collaborera également avec les Archives du comté de Glengarry pour mener des recherches sur les propriétés dans nos hameaux.

Trois étudiants travailleront sur des projets pour le patrimoine culturel projets du patrimoine aujourd’hui et, pour une durée de 12 semaines, circuleront dans la communauté. Alexis termine sa deuxième année d’étude dans le domaine de l’architecture et du design avec l’Université Carleton de même que Kyra qui elle étudie dans le domaine de l’Ingénierie, la viabilité et la conservation du patrimoine architectural. En date du 11 juin, Jerry Chow se joindra à l’équipe. Jerry a lui aussi terminé sa deuxième année d’étude dans le domaine de l’architecture et du design.

United Way Operations & Fundraising Coordinator

The United Way of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry is governed by a local Board of Directors, who, with other volunteers and staff, help to build caring communities and respond to a broad range of human needs. It provides direct financial support to agencies, programs and services within the three counties. The United Way of S.D. &G creates a common ground where labour, business, community leaders and government come to the table to identify needs and solve problems.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the United Way Operations & Fundraising Coordinator ensures that the Organization’s mission, values, goals and objectives are met. As the United Way Operations & Fundraising Coordinator you will be accountable for the effective day-to-day operations of the local United Way Office, Workplace Campaign management and other fundraising responsibilities such as preparing grant submissions and funding proposals. Other areas of responsibility will include; organization for the United Way Annual General meeting, providing reports to United Way Canada as required and other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Shared duties with the Campaign, Communications & Special Events Coordinator to include; actively support and participate in United Way Signature Events, third party and awareness events. Assist in planning and managing workplace campaigns and Yearly Community Campaign. Work closely with the Campaign, Communications & Special Events Coordinator to; implement current five-year strategic plan, coordinate marketing, communications and public relations, help recruit and oversee volunteers.

As the ideal candidate for this position, you have: a Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma in Business Management, proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications and Accounting Software, previous office management experience, leadership skills, ability to connect with people and foster strong relationships, excellent communication, superior public relations and strong presentation skills, superior tact and diplomacy, fundraising experience and a strong understanding of the fundamentals of large fundraising campaigns and a valid driver’s permit and access to a reliable automobile.

In addition to the above requirements, must be prepared to work extra hours and flexible hours (evenings and weekends based on need i.e.; special events, etc.), as required, in order to meet deliverables.

The annual Medieval Festival was at Upper Canada Village this weekend and was once again a hit. The event started Friday and more was yet to come on Monday. The festival came to Cornwall, Ontario two years ago and is a great ongoing event.
