Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media APPLE HILL, Ontario - Pot-bellied pigs quickly gathered as bread was flung to them during the Pig Feeding Frenzy at Bee Meadow Farm on Saturday, June 16. This was the rescue farm’s second annual fundraiser, and last year $6,500 was raised to support the adopted and foster animals.

The fundraiser was held from 1 to 4 p.m. and it included a high-energy Pig Feeding Frenzy, face painting, an animal photo booth, pony rides, as well as a silent auction and a raffle. The event encouraged participants to donate to the farm or sponsor an animal. Natalie Rowe, who runs the farm, hopes that this year’s event will fund recent veterinary bills. The farm is supported by Rowe and her husband, as well as

donations.

“We have this open house every year now so the public can see what’s going on and come to enjoy the animals,” said Rowe. “We hope to inspire people to have some compassion for animals and if they want to help out they can.

It’s just a nice day to ride the ponies or feed the pigs.”

Rowe’s rescue started five years ago when the OSPCA asked if she would foster a pregnant pot-bellied pig. Now her farm has grown to house several pigs, goats, ponies, chickens and cats. Currently Rowe owns 17 cats and is fostering 12 cats who are up for adoption. A lot of the cats who have come through her farm are from Cornwall and Rowe volunteers with various local OSPCA locations.

Rowe is thankful for the support that the

farm has received on social media. She said that two of her kittens will soon be adopted by a pastry chef from Toronto, and the connection would have never been made if it wasn’t for Twitter. She is also thankful for the support of everyone who attended the Bee Meadow Farm PG. 9 day and hopes to see participants at Goat Yoga in August.

“Being connected to nature is a huge part of healing to me,” said Pierre Quenneville, who attended the event. “Being around animals is a really healing thing, just seeing them like this.

Code Crew Coaches Kids CSS, HTML Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario – The Code Mobile ventured to Williamstown Public school on Wednesday, June 13, and students got to learn the basics of computer coding. The Code Mobile will be at Morrisburg Public School and Central Public school on June 14.

“Today at the school we were at, we were actually teaching game making with a program called Scratch,” said Shelby Bastarache, the Communications Lead for the Code Mobile based in Peterborough. “So it’s beginner friendly with coding, and the kids can see the coding they’re building themselves.”

The Code Mobile is a one-year pilot program with Canada Learning Code, formerly known as Ladies Learning Code. There are presently 13 Code Mobiles across Canada, and the program has been made possible through a federal government grant with the CanCode Initiative. The $7.9 million grant has been invested into vans, technology, staff, and free workshops.

“Through the Code Mobile, we’re able to reach even more people,” said Steve Blair, Education Lead for the Code Mobile based in Peterborough. “We have public workshops like in Cornwall, we have a volunteer doing weekend workshops for adults and kids. But to reach kids in schools and community centres and camps, where there’s already a group of kids, we have the Code Mobile set up. We have laptops and robots and all sorts of stuff there. If there’s

kids are from kindergarten to grade 12, we will make it happen.”

According to Blair, his Code Mobile currently has 28 laptops. All services with the Code Mobile are free. Children get to learn several techniques, like how to build and design a website.

“Everything we do is kind of beginner friendly,” said Blair. “We want people to get exposure to what coding and technology is like, and help them with that stepping stone.”

The company started out six years ago and it encouraged women to become more involved with the evolving technology industry. Today there are still adult courses available, and the programs help participants develop basic code and design skills.

“A lot of the women were coming through the program saying ‘I wish I had this when I was a kid.’ So that’s why we have the Code Mobile and kids programs so they can try it out,” said Blair.

Blair acknowledges that there is an education gap when it comes to computer coding.

Coding can be applicable to several jobs today and believes that children should have the opportunity to try it to see if they are interested learning more.

Jane MacMillan started painting in 2005 after visiting Nunavut, where she was inspired

by Inuit artwork and the landscapes. Now she owns Jane MacMillan Originals and teaches dance classes with Beyond 21. MacMillan conducts warm ups and spatial exercises, and has taught participants folk dances of Israel, Romania and Russia.

“Beyond 21, I really like it very much,” said MacMillan. “I do a dance class with them once a week. It’s natural to want to support it so that’s why I came today.”

McLaren is glad that people came together to give their hearts and time for Beyond 21. She believes that the vendors and homeowners who partnered with the organization are dream chasers just like the Beyond 21 participants, all sharing a common goal. Beyond 21 participants created artwork that was on sale at the Market, and after being open for only three hours, almost all of the creations were sold out.

There are eight senses that I know of: hear, see, feel, taste, smell, fashion, common and sixth. The last three seem to be on the endangered species list. This week I’ll explore some personal observations on the first, people’s ability to hear, plus the related skill of listening.

Among the senses that atrophy with old age and environmental conditions is the ability to hear. Some sounds have gone the way of the dinosaurs, bell bottoms and handwriting. When I first started writing for publication, the process was accompanied by sounds

like tap, tap, tap…then the end of the line bell, followed by the zzzipppp of the shift to the next line. Writing is now a silent process. When I’ve eliminated as many typos, misspellings and grammatical errors as possible, I call upon my internet server to deliver the words. Gone is the cacophony of buzzes and whistles of dial-up. I now have a high-speed connection.

The only time I still hear the rat-a-tat-tat of a dot matrix printer is when the ATM updates my bank book.

Long gone is the almost inaudible scratch of the teller’s pen nib as she entered my first account’s balance. That was 65 years ago.

At Mom and Dad’s, we had early morning mail delivery. On Saturdays I’d eagerly await the stomp, stomp of the mailman’s boots as he climbed the steps of our front porch. The sharp clack of the mail slot’s spring-loaded metal flap was followed by the silence of letters

fluttering to the floor. However, if the sound was a thump, I’d fly down the 14 steps from my bedroom to retrieve what I hoped was a reply from Avro in England, or Douglas in Santa Monica. I used to write to them, “Dear sirs, I’m making a model of your latest aircraft, but I need a set of photos and three-view drawings of it to make it accurate. Please send…” They did.

I can still remember my grade six teacher announcing, “Class, today we are going to learn how to write a pretend business letter to a company. You can make up any name and any request you wish…” “Do I have to?

I’ve been doing that for real at home. Look what I just got from the man at Boeing.”

The once familiar sounds of travel are gone too.

Locomotives no longer huff, huff, puff, puff, and chug.

The smooth rumble of a diesel is not very exciting. Some sounds of air travel are but fond memories too. I

remember the whine, followed by the laboured cough and splutter that was the invariable preamble to the start-up of an airliner’s radial engine. The de Havilland Otter’s engine continued to clatter throughout its flight, but the DC-3’s settled down to a smooth hum. However, the mighty roar of the four-engined Super Connies never went below umpteen decibels.

It’s not just aviation and railway engines that emitted long-remembered distinctive sounds. Coax your memory to bring back the chatter of the 4-cylinder aircooled VW Beetle engine. It’s as distinctive as the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.

When Mr. Dawson, the small boat captain in the recent movie ‘Dunkirk’, hears the sound of an approaching aircraft, without turning around to verify, he proclaims, “Rolls-Royce Merlin engines. Sweetest sound you could hear` out here.”

OTTAWA, Ontario – Kickstands went up at 8:30 a.m. on June 2 when over 1,200 motorcyclists participated in the TELUS Ottawa Motorcycle Ride For Dad. The ride raised $207,115 for prostate cancer research this year.

Bob Kikkert of Cornwall, a prostate cancer survivor, surpassed his goal for 2018 and raised $4,120.

“In total we have contributed $31,300 over the past 11 years with this year being the best yet,” said Kikkert in regards to local fundraising.

The event revved up at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum and ended at the Canada Post building on Riverside Drive.

“As long as I can ride my Harley motorcycle I will support this ride,” said Kikkert. “This is a charity I wholeheartedly support, partly because I am a prostate cancer survivor of 17 years, and also because this is a charity with many volunteers. So almost all of the money goes into research, support for men suffering from the disease and for public awareness.”

Kikkert’s son Tim is an Executive for the Ride to Live in B.C., which also supports prostate cancer research. He has raised over $60,000 in eight years and hopes to work together with his father next year to break the $100,000 mark.

According to Keith Fong, Co-Chair of the Ottawa Ride, funds raised will be used for prostate cancer research and awareness in the Ottawa region.

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario - Wales Rd., also known as County Rd. 12 was closed starting Wednesday, June 13, 2018.

The road is being closed as the Wales Rd. bridge is replaced. The bridge replacement is the second phase of the project to replace both the Avonmore Rd. bridge and the Wales Rd. bridge.

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – Bryan McGillis is returning to South Stormont politics and is running for Mayor.

McGillis previously served as Mayor from 2006-2014. Last election, he was replaced by current Mayor Jim Bancroft, who is not running for re-election.

McGillis touted his experience as Mayor and outlined his goals of creating a more open municipal government.

“As head of council I will improve communications to the ratepayers by asking the media to be present again,” McGillis said in a written statement. “I will encourage council to allow the head person of each department to make reports at all council meetings which is no longer happening.”

McGillis said that one of his goals was to improve infrastructure, but aimed to not overly burden taxpayers with those costs.

“There is not a lot of money out there, but we need to be out there knocking on doors,” he said in an interview with Seaway News.

McGillis remarked that when he was Mayor, he would petition provincial ministers in order to get money for municipal projects and gave the example of Jeff Leal, the former Minister of Infrastructure who McGillis lobbied for roadwork funding.

“In my last four years as Mayor, we had the lowest taxes in SD&G,” claimed McGillis. “And that doesn’t mean we weren’t still getting things done. You can’t run a municipality on taxes alone.”

Other policy goals McGillis hoped to fulfill if elected Mayor would be to attract more business to South Stormont, and pressure the provincial government to make safety improvements to Hwy 138.

McGillis was first elected to council in 1988 at the age of 27.

South Stormont voters go to the polls on Oct. 22.

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - For Dad’s big day on Sunday, June 17, Cornwall Aviation and Cornwall Flying Club hosted the 42nd annual Father’s Day Fly-in Breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon.

This year, the Canadian Coast Guard made an appearance, and pilot Gary Ertel invited everyone to take photos with the air craft. Event tickets were $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Fergie Legge, the event organizer with the Cornwall Flying Club, said that last year volunteers served over 750 meals. This year, they’re expecting a higher number.

“It’s a huge effort, obviously, we do it with our own club members — 25 came out today to participate,” said Legge. “But more importantly the Lancaster Air Cadets, Cornwall Air Cadets and Alexandria Air Cadets all lend a hand to get this event off the ground. At the end of the day, a lot of the money that we raise goes back to Cornwall Aviation, and it goes into a special account that allows the Air Cadets to go flying.”

Cornwall Aviation was offering plane rides for $20. There was also live karaoke and a DJ, as well as face painting.

“Every year we try to up the game a little bit.

Last year we started face painting and it was really well received, so we have it again this year,” said Legge.

Legge hopes that this year’s event informed community members about the local airport and sparked an interest in aviation amongst children.

APPLE HILL, Ontario - The Fifth annual House Tour and Spring Market for Beyond 21 took place on Sunday, June 17. Eleanor McGrath and her husband Fin Barr McCarthy opened their doors to the public to support the organization.

House Tour tickets were $25.

“It was overwhelming,” said McGrath, who was surprised by the amount of people that walked through her door early this morning.

McGrath’s sister opened her doors last year, so she decided she would participate this year.

McGrath has a cousin who lives with down syndrome. She understands the importance of continued support, and acknowledges that once individuals leave the school system, supportive organizations aren’t always easy to find.

“Something like Beyond 21 is so important, and people don’t realize it,” said McGrath.

Jane McLaren, Program Manager with Beyond 21, emphasized the importance of fundraising and raising awareness because the organization is not government funded.

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne thinking smart Shawna O’Neill, Special to TC Media AKWESASNE, Ontario – Earlier this month, Infrastructure Canada announced that the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is one of five national finalists in the Smart Cities Challenge. As a finalist, the MCA will receive $250,000 to further develop their smart city plan.

“We’re extremely excited to be one of the finalists,” said MCA Grand Chief Abram Benedict.

“I think that one of our strategic priorities is modernization and well-being, and this falls in line with that.”

Infrastructure Canada asked communities to enter project proposals that would address local issues, using data and connected technology.

The MCA began researching last July.

Benedict said there is presently no grocery stores in the community, so access to clean, healthy food isn’t always easy. The projected plan is to develop a smart greenhouse and grow foods that won’t be surrounded by chemicals.

whether the food comes from within or outside of the community. Benedict is hoping this will be possible, and information will be accessible through modern technology, such as apps and web portals. The plan also outlines data collection to see who is at risk and if the disease is common in certain areas of the community.

“We have a robust health department within our community, but we also have a high number of new cases of diabetes,” said Benedict. “Our Smart Cities statement was that we would try to reduce the new number of cases of diabetes to at least what the Canadian average is, and then bring it even a bit lower.”

The MCA proposal is to focus on health and wellness in the community, specifically lowering cases of diabetes. Benedict understands that the disease manifests from different circumstances, whether it’s genetics or diet.

Some community members advocated that access to high speed internet and public transportation should be prioritized. According to Benedict, the common theme was access and services. The plan that was developed is intended to be easily adoptable.

“We clearly want to be able to ensure that it’s transferable to other communities,” said Benedict. “Especially Indigenous communities, but not only specifically them. Some of the access issues that our community has could potentially be similar to rural communities or northern communities, but we’re not exactly either.”

The MCA chose to work with the digital services firm Zu for the proposal, based on their successful reputation. The company is helping with the planning process and design thinking

training.

Benedict said that they will continue to integrate traditional knowledge into the development of proposal, and hopefully be able to implement it if they win.

“Obviously what we developed was a highlevel proposal, very conceptual,” said Benedict.

“The $250,000 will now be used to further investigate what we said we would do.”

The winner of the $5 million project will be announced in Spring of 2019.

Campaign 2000, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting child poverty, released a report last week that ranked child poverty by federal riding.

In our riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry, the child poverty rate is 19.9 percent, that means that nearly one-in-five children live in poverty right here in Cornwall and the United Counties.

While that number is not the highest in Canada, it is still higher than most ridings and is evidence of the importance of supporting organizations like the Agapè Centre, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Salvation Army.

Those organizations receive a tremendous amount of focus during the Christmas season every year, as they should, but let’s not forget about them during the summer months as well.

The Agapè Centre for example, typically runs some of their biggest fundraisers during the summer. Last year they held their very successful

One-Bag Challenge and this year, they are currently holding a food drive in partnership with Wine Rack Cornwall.

The reason for this is that during the school year, students from low-income families can often take advantage of school meal programs.

During the summer, these programs aren’t there which means the family needs to find those meals somewhere else. Many families find their meals at the Agapè Centre. Around 100 to 160 people use the Agapè Centre soup kitchen every day and their food bank serves around 125 families.

In addition to helping out these great causes when we can, another thing we can do as citizens is ensure that our government, at every level, is working to solve problems like child poverty.

I don’t mind paying taxes as long as they are spent wisely, and used to solve problems that I can’t solve on my own, like solving child poverty.

No child wants to live in poverty and there are strategies that can be employed to help fight child poverty even at the municipal level of

government.

Providing access to affordable child daycare, school lunch programs, summer food programs, and jobs for parents that can provide a living wage are just some ideas that could be imple-

mented to help ease child poverty.

Cats not the problem

Dear Editor, The problem is not the cats but the humans who let a domesticated animal become feral or roaming and now these poor creatures are paying the price of starving, disease, accidents, violent untimely deaths and a very short lifespan. All this is on the human who does not care for their animal by abandoning and releasing them. The real issue is spaying and neutering then there would be no feral cats once they died out.

Cats can live up to and over 20 years yet in the wild only about 3 or 4. They are subject to

concurrent pregnancies and illness due to human neglect, not by their own design.

As for this cat bite I think some people have missed the point that this cat was not feral as it had a collar or at least the article said that. If so the bite was not from a feral cat but one roaming who has owners.

Every cat should have to be spayed or neutered whether in the house or not. Females get multiple infections if not neutered and not having litters.

Males roam and get into fights, spray and impregnate female cats. We need cheaper fees for

neutering animals and the spay and release is by far the best option, as these animals will not live long lives in the wild and then soon the problem will not exist.

Many farms in the area surrounding Cornwall have colonies of not neutered cats and I know some of the cats turned into SPCA are these and no doubt some of the wild cats in Cornwall are these. I have witnessed farms who do not care for their farm cats neither feeding, inoculating, nor spay and neutered so there are many loose wild cats all over my property and all the counties around Cornwall. I have

taken some of these cats and kittens to the Cornwall and Brockville SPCA. How can a civilized society treat creatures with such disdain as to want to euthanize them for the crimes committed against these less fortunate cats.

We have caused this problem and now we blame the cat! Shame on you. We can judge a society by how it treats the creatures in it care, and I would say Cornwall and surrounding area are neglecting their duty to these animals. Please address the real problem, humans not cats.

Dear Editor, This is in regard to your column about Jim McDonell, MPP our PC representative.

I wrote him several days before the election.

I had received his pamphlet in the mail and at the top of his agenda, was, MORE DOCTORS FOR CORNWALL. He has been our representative for many years now, same situation. A lack

of doctors in Cornwall. I had read an article about the RIO Program and Cornwall has NOT enlisted in this. In my letter I questioned him as to why.

Well, I have not yet received any reply from him to date.

I also noted the new homes being built all over Cornwall. It would be nice if the people

who buy these homes are not only retirees from other cities. Hopefully Cornwall can attract young families. But these families will need decent jobs, their children would have a brighter future to look forward to in Cornwall, and remain in Cornwall. Where is business and industry? Why is it at such a standstill? Brockville is attracting big business and industry. This in

turn attracts young families. The money moves around. Starting with construction, roads, homes, furniture/appliances, cars, sports, food, clothing, it goes round and round.

Why hasn’t Mr. McDonell done any of the above. Why and when will he fulfill some of his promises. It would be good for EVERYONE. Cynthia Feldman

It was just one of those mini-heat waves of the one-day variety, but the weather prognosticators tell us that there is more to come as spring morphs into the lazy, hazy days of summer.

Unfortunately, heat waves, especially the extended ones, fog our memory about how we cursed the cold, snow and freezing rain a few months earlier. It’s all waiting in the wings for a return in about six months.

There was a time when a heat wave meant cooling off at the old Central Park pool, swimming in Cornwall Canal at that great watering hole Silver Bridge, the bywash/boardy bottom or Roosevelt Bridge where dare devils would dive off the swing bridge. It was a bicycle ride on old Highway 2, past the hamlet of Maple Grove and to Mille Roches, but the beach on Sheek Island was worth the ride.

Out in the country, watering holes were abandoned quarries and ponds which had the dreaded blood suckers. For kids who grew up in one of the Lost Villages along the St. Lawrence River shoreline there were countless swimming spots. I knew kids who hardly took off their swim suits during the summer.

Of course, every heat wave these days is accompanied by warnings and tips from the folks over at the division of public health.

There was a time when heat-wave advisories were issued by mothers (“Stay out of the sun and wear a hat.”), not the department of public health.

And somehow we survived without central air conditioning and sun screen. A heat wave was a great opportunity for young neighbourhood entrepreneurs to set up lemonade stands.

In the evening, folks would sit out on the front porch to catch a cool breeze and do some people watching.

HERE AND THERE: From what I’ve seen of late, a Twitter account in the hands of some folks is akin to a rogue Third Nation having a nuclear weapon. Amazing how some of the Twitter twits try to emulate Donald Trump. ... Just a thought, but what would the cable television networks in the Excited States of America be talking about if they didn’t have Donald Trump.

Grâce à une initiative visant les terres communautaires dirigée par SDG, sept forêts du comté seront nommées en 2018, ce qui favorisera l’utilisation récréative et la gestion durable des forêts. La Conservation de la Nation Sud est le partenaire de gestion de toutes les forêts appartenant à SDG. La forêt est spécialement dédiée à un leader de longue date, Alvin Runnalls, en reconnaissance de ses 40 ans de participation communautaire. M. Runnalls est décédé en 2016, à l’âge de 76 ans, à la suite d’un accident survenu lors d’abattage d’arbres.

M. Runnalls vivait non loin de la forêt qui porte maintenant son nom où il cultivait la terre et s’adonnait à l’élevage d’abeilles; il a siégé durant quatre mandats au conseil de North Dundas et a occupé le poste de président de SDG. « Alvin a été impliqué dans plus d’une douzaine d’organisations, que ce soit pour servir en tant que maire de North Dundas ou représenter SDG en tant que membre du conseil d’administration de la CNS, amenant de solides compétences en leadership pour les aider à réussir et à dépasser leurs objectifs » a déclaré Pat Piitz, chef d’équipe aux propriétés à la CNS. La CNS a également grandement bénéficié des conseils d’Alvin au cours de son mandat de sept ans à titre de membre du conseil d’administration de la CNS et de sa participation continue au comité des communications de la

CNS. « Alvin a appuyé et contribué à l’avancement des initiatives de la CNS visant à conserver, à restaurer, à développer et à gérer les ressources naturelles du bassin versant de la rivière Nation Sud, a ajouté M. Piitz. C’est un honneur absolu de reconnaître Alvin et le travail qu’il a accompli pour la communauté de cette façon. » La CNS et SDG acceptent les dons de terres tout au long de l’année grâce au Programme de dons écologiques du Canada. Les terres données servent à améliorer le couvert forestier, à assurer la santé des écosystèmes et à offrir des possibilités récréatives au public.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bikers pedalled away from Lamoureux Park around 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 towards Archie’s for ice cream. The third annual Sunset Cycle, hosted by the Cornwall Outdoor Club, attracted its biggest crowd yet.

“We’ve always had good weather,” said Kevin O’Rourke, an event organizer. “The past three years, we’ve always lucked out and had nice weather like this.”

According to O’Rourke, the free event encourages the community to walk, cycle and use public transportation. This year, it was a part of the Walk and Roll Month with Transition Cornwall+.

“The whole month is about celebrating all things walking and rolling, for fun, fitness and function,” said Chantal Lalonde of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. “And this is obviously for fun.”

Earlier this month, Transition Cornwall+ screened a movie about the advantages of cycling versus driving a car, and Bike Centric held a workshop to inform the community about bicycle maintenance.

The last events of the Walk and Roll Month will be taking place on Thursday, June 21 for the Summer Solstice this year. Lalonde said the day will start with tai chi at 5:00 a.m. and then a picnic in the evening at 5:30 p.m., both at Lamoureux Park. The picnic will be followed by a guided walk through the Eco Gardens at 7 p.m. On the same day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership will be celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day at the Native North American Travelling College.

“We’re going to be enjoying it from sunrise to sunset,” said Lalonde.

All funds raised this year will again go to support Beyond 21.

The organizers are hoping to have 16 teams this year and have 14 signed up last year.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Civic Complex will be hosting an OHL game this year, the first time OHL level hockey has been played in Cornwall in 20 years. The Ottawa 67s will face off against the Kingston Frontenacs on Labour Day, Sept. “Obviously, having Doug Gilmour as our President of Hockey Operations and his connection to Cornwall makes our exhibition game that much more exciting. We’re looking forward to playing Ottawa in front of a great crowd as we all know how passionate the Cornwall area is about hockey,” said Frontenacs General Manager Darren Keily.

Cornwall’s junior hockey team, the Cornwall Colts will be presenting the game in partnership with Cornwall Tourism.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Moving steel at the gym gets heavy when a world of competitors and spectators come to watch, and that is what happened this Saturday.

Weight trainers from around the globe came to Quest in Cornwall to partake in the International Powerlifting Association’s competition, an event designed to test the will and might of the strongest individuals.

Organizer Yael Benyair with the IPA said in an interview “It is just being better than I was yesterday, being stronger. It’s not a fashion statement, it’s about competing with yourself.”

Yael is a competitor as well and can lift close to 500 pounds. Over 100 people came to spectate close to 50 competitors as they do bench presses, squats and deadlifts that reach an easy 900 pounds.
