First Science and Technology Day at OPG CORNWALL, Ontario – Science and Technology Day at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) on Saturday, July 14 featured 3D printing, virtual reality demonstrations, a Van de Graaff generator and other activities for the whole family.

Eric Belanger, a developmental summer student, organized the first ever OPG Science and Technology Day. He was happy with the

amount of people who attended the event. Belanger believes that impactful advances in technology should be recognized and understood by children and adults.

“Especially in today’s world, everything is tech oriented and heading towards the future; everything is related to technology,” said Belanger. “Like 3D printing and virtual reality, I think it’s going to be a very large part of our future, and everything is going to revolve around that sort of technology. I think it’s also very fascinating for everyone to learn about.

CORNWALL, Ontario- The largest crowd of supporters to date marched in the 2018 Cornwall Pride Parade on Saturday, July 14. This year’s activities mark the third annual pride weekend in the city.

“I’m blown away by the support. Year-by-year, it just keeps growing,” said Stephanie Nadeau, President of Diversity Cornwall. Nadeau said she was thrilled with the turn out, as well as the energy coming into Lamoureux Park.

The crowd marched from Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School (CCVS) to Lamoureux Park, commencing around 11 a.m. Once at the park, the Pride Festival began at 12 p.m.

People of all ages marched while dressed and accessorized in rainbow colours. Several people held signs with positive slogans, and many waved LGBTQ+ and transgender flags. Groups and individuals shouted phrases like ‘Love wins!’ as they showed their support for the LGBTQ+ community.

“I feel empowered to help the younger generation,” said Derrik Baker, a long time LGBTQ+ activist. “If I can hang around and wave a flag for them — the millennials and the Generation X coming up. Because they’re technologically informed and they’re scientifically informed, and this is what’s pushing us forward. So the regression of the Ford train isn’t going to derail us. And we have nothing but respect for Kathleen Wynne. She was a trailblazer.”

Nadeau noticed more allies and booths in the park supporting the festival this year. However, she did encounter a group of protestors who were passing out comic strips with derogatory messages about gay individuals. These protestors were politely asked to leave.

“We still have protestors who protest against who we are, which is kind of odd, considering it’s 2018,” said

Nadeau.

“What we need is the youth. They’re the people that are going to change the culture of things to move forward more. Gay marriage is legal now thanks to the elder people that fought for us, but now we need the young people to fight to change the culture more,” said Nadeau.

City Councillor Elaine MacDonald read a letter on behalf of Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, who proclaimed the weekend as Pride Weekend in Cornwall. The letter also encouraged and praised freedom expression of identity, promoting tolerance, diversity, fairness and exclusiveness.

MacDonald shared her belief that the new Provincial Premiere, Doug Ford, has taken two massive steps backwards, one of those steps including the reversal of the Sex-ed Curriculum to the 1998 version.

“That is so very wrong, because it wasn’t until after 1998 that gay marriage became recognized as a fact and a good thing in Canada…and here now in Ontario we are denying that in our education,” said MacDonald.

“I ask you, if in the school system you take out any reference to the word pride, or gay, or homosexual or LGBT, how can you teach pride? Pride is about being visible, and about being proud. And if you have to be visible and erased from the books, that is a step backwards…we have to be vigilant, and we have to push back against this. We have to just say, ‘there’s no going back,’” said MacDonald.

The celebration didn’t stop with the parade and festival. The Pride Gala is held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 14 at The Hangover Bar. The night will include performances from the Capital Kings and prestigious drag queens from Ottawa.

Tomorrow, Sunday, July 15, registration for the Pride Run/Walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Medals will be given to the fastest 30 participants, and participants also have the option to participate in yoga.

CORNWAL, Ontario – Around 2,300 people gathered at the Nav Centre for the first Beer, Bourbon, BBQ and Blues on Saturday, July 14.

“Its year one, but I would say that we gave an experience that most probably haven’t experienced before,” said Ian Bentley the Nave Centre’s Director of

Conference Services, Food & Beverage. “We’re a group of perfectionists at the Nave Centre and we will make it better.”

There was a beer pong game tent on site. For $20 teams were invited to compete at this classic party

game with the money going to fund the Crafting a Cure event later this year, which supports the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Bentley said that he’s heard great reviews so far from the breweries who came to the event and that he already has some ideas for next year including adding more shade and some misting tents for those who need to cool off.

“Nav Centre worked hard to make this a success for the City and so far the feedback has been phenomenal,” he said. Bentley promises that the event will grow next year and that the Nav Centre already plans to hold another Beer, Bourbon, BBQ and Blues event in July 2019.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Bereaved Families Ontario – Cornwall & Area hosted their third annual Spaghetti Supper on Saturday, July 14, starting at 5:30 p.m.

The event was held at the Cornwall Legion, and featured live entertainment from the Foxx Boys, dessert sponsored by Cayer Motor Sales and a dance to end the evening. Tickets were $20.

“It began because we lost some of our funding, so we needed to create different fundraisers,” said Gisèle Roy, Program Coordinator with Bereaved Families.

According to Roy, Bereaved Families primarily relies on fundraisers and donations to continue programs. Roy is thankful that the Legion makes the Spaghetti Supper an easy event as they provide the dinner.

“We appreciate everyone’s support because fundraising is very important,” said Roy. To find out more about Bereaved Families services, go to their website at bfocornwall.ca.

“Our visitors centre not only tells the story

of our generating station, but a lot of people don’t understand how we generate power itself,” said Belanger. “So across OPG we have all kinds of innovative things. I think there’s a lot of room for learning for kids and adults.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Members of the SD&G Highlanders have left for the Netherlands to take part in the 102nd annual International Four Days Marches Nijmegen.

The march takes place from July 17 to the 20 and will cover 160km of city streets and countryside around the Dutch city of Nijmegen.

Much of the land across which the Highlanders will be marching is the same land on which Canadian soldiers fought and died during World War II. This year also marks the 66th anniversary of

the first participation of the Canadian Forces in the march which took place in 1952.

“For 66 years, the Canadian Armed Forces have participated in the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen, honouring the Canadian troops who sacrificed their lives during the First World War and Second World War, for the freedom and security of Europe and consequently, of the world,” said LieutenantGeneral Charles Lamarre, Commander Military Personnel Command. “This year’s team continues this tradition with pride and a great feeling of honour in commemorating our veterans.”

In total, the Canadian Forces are sending

200 personnel to take part in this year’s march, and of that 200, 14 will be from the SD&G Highlanders. the Highlanders were selected to take part in the march this year to commemorate their 150th anniversary as a unit.

The Canadian Forces requires participating members to train rigorously before being selected for the march. Each participating SD&G Highlander will have completed at least 500km of training marches. The Nijmegen March takes place across all four days, with each team marching 40km per day.

Seventh Annual Lions Club Car Show

BONVILLE, Ontario – The seventh annual Lions Club Car Show featured an array of 85 automobiles, from vintage cars to new sports cars. The car show took place at the Cornwall Township Lions Club between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 14.

“Our major sponsor was Wired Audio, along with a lot of community support. We have another 100 community supporters,” said Andrew Maloney, the event organizer.

The event fundraised money to donate to community organizations.

“In the past we’ve donated to St. Vincent de Paul, Baldwin House. Last year we did the Apple Hill Beavers and Scouts,” said Maloney.

Over 70 prizes could be won through raffle draws, including a tent.

“Even though it was cloudy this morning, we’ve still had good participation,” said Maloney.

Cars were provided by members of the community who wanted to showcase their automobiles.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Residents of McConnell Manor had a laugh when they got to dunk General Manager, Todd Cooke, in a dunk tank on Thursday, July 12. The dunk tank was a part of the first carnival day at the manor.

“It was refreshing,” said Cooke in regards to being dunked.

Several residents came outside of the manor to partake in the activities and enjoy the food, while others watched the fun from their balconies.

“We’ve got balloon pop, ring toss, bean bag toss, go fish…lots of food, carnival food – corndogs, pretzels, nachos, lots of drinks, chocolate and chips,” said Michael Beaudry, Lifestyle Programs Manager at the manor. The carnival also featured cars from the Cornwall Olde Car Club and a dunk tank.

“Trying something new to give the residents

something to do outside,” said Cooke.

Proceeds from the carnival’s activities will go towards the Wish of a Lifetime initiative.

“The initiative is for elderlies, whether they’re living in a Chartwell home or living in the community,” said Beaudry. “It’s something, say, they’ve always wanted to do in their life. For example, we had a group of ladies who had never been to The Keg before and they really wanted to go to The Keg. So, Wish of a Lifetime granted (it) to them. We got them a car, brought them up to Ottawa, went to The Keg and payed for supper.”

Beaudry thanked all the volunteers and organizations that donated to the event to make it possible.

Joyce Tilley, a resident at the manor, tried to dunk Cooke and tried her hand at the game.

Programs changing lives: Beyond 21

Provided by the United Way of SD&G CORNWALL, Ontario - United Way Centraide SD&G supported programs are changing lives and helping to create strong people and a healthy community. We generate significant impact in our community by investing in programs offering support, guidance and education creating lasting, positive change in the lives of others.

The HUB for Beyond 21 Foundation is changing lives through the Social Networking Program.

At Beyond 21, they partner with developmentally disabled adults, 21 years of age and

older, and work to learn what their dreams are for their future. From there Beyond 21 helps them to learn the skills they need and make the community connections they need to achieve their dreams.

The Social Network program, which is funded by the United Way, focuses on those with the highest needs. These participants are nonverbal, lack motor skills, use a wheelchair for mobility and require assistance for all activities of daily living. The program currently runs three half days per week. This program has a part time Social Network Facilitator as well as a part time support person. Beyond 21 has sought to fill a gap by chasing the simple dream of ‘having a

friend’ for those with complex developmental needs.

The vision on Beyond 21 is to enable adults with developmental disabilities to live connected, respected and contributing to our community.

I think that it is time that the City takes a more active role in fighting issues like poverty and hunger in Cornwall.

Currently, they are conducting their first ever enumeration for homelessness in Cornwall and that’s a good start, but what about invisible poverty? I’m talking about those people who have to choose between paying their rent and buying food for their family.

This week, the Agapè Centre announced that it is facing a funding shortage of 31 percent over last year.

The centre does not receive funding from any level of government and claims to have tightened its belt by around 40 percent since 2016.

On the other end of it, the Agapè Centre provides support to 165 people who use its soup kitchen every day and around 600

families who use their food bank every month, and yet, it receives no support from City Hall, which is one block down from their building.

The City does provide money to support some non-profit outside agencies including Centre Culturel de Cornwall, The Cornwall BMX Club, Your Arts Council, Not so Amateurs, Amateurs Cornwall and Cornwall Waterfest.

Each of those organizations I just listed received between $1,000 and $15,000 this year from the City of Cornwall and while those figures are not a lot, they do send an important statement about the City’s commitment to dealing with hunger in Cornwall.

That being said, solving any problem takes effective management, you can’t just throw money at it and especially not taxpayer money.

Clearly hunger is a problem in Cornwall and the City already spends a significant amount on its Social Services department,

which is good, social services should be a priority of government in the same way that Economic Development is.

I believe that poverty is an issue that can be fought and managed, but only with the right strategy. I’d like to see a day where the Agapè Centre’s services are not needed, so if it means spending tax dollars now so we can reach that goal, then I’m all for it.

Eliminating and reducing funding for

social services should be a goal, but only if the problems that they fight, like homelessness and hunger are solved.

There are only so many dollars to go around, whether they be tax dollars or donor dollars.

If they City wants to be a part of the solution and really wants to save money, then it should be actively involved in reducing the need for services like the Agapè Centre.

This also means that any action taken will protect retirees in the future from being ripped off by greedy corporations. Presently, 30 per cent of retirees pensions are underfunded and the government should force those companies to guarantee 100 per cent of their responsibilities. Provincially, MPPs were asked to support a letter sent to the government to introduce pension protection in Ontario. Although the question being

asked of the MPPs required a yes or no answer, many simply repeated party policy including our representative Jim McDonell.

Much appreciated was a phone call from Jim in which he made clear that he supported pension reforms, unlike MP Guy Lauzon who has been quite on the pension issue.

Dear Editor, At the Liberal 2018 National Convention in Halifax in April, an important part of the convention was setting policy priorities for the Liberal Party for the next eight years.

Protecting pensions in insolvency was one of the policies that was under consideration and Michael Powell, President of the Canadian Federation of Pensioners, brought the issue to a head: “anyone here who is

willing to take a 40 per cent reduction on their pensions for the rest of their lives, please stand up (no one did).” How about 20 per cent, same response.

A resolution, after much debate, was voted on and passed in the top five of all the policy proposals. What this resolution means is that at the grassroots level, the members have spoken and want the Liberal Caucus and government to take action.

His dad Ted and mom Gertrude, along with his uncle Tom Hale, helped start the club in the early 1950s. The club, a social outlet for kids, was based in the old club house at King George Park. Dave Murphy, Ted and Gertrude’s grandson, recalls his grandmother spending hours making the majorette uniforms. The band (and majorettes) was the centre piece of the club.

Nobody was turned away. Art recalls one guy who couldn’t play a musical instrument if his life depended on it. “He was given a clarinet and told to just pretend he was playing it when we were marching in parades,” recalls Art. “Those were great days (for a kid).” And, it didn’t cost taxpayers a dime. The club did its own fundraising.

One of the self-proclaimed fastest expanding motorcycle clubs, with chapters all over the world, has set up shop in Cornwall.

The Outlaws Motorcycle Club website lists Cornwall as its 10th Ontario chapter. The chapter’s “club house” has an East Cornwall address.

It quickly got the attention of city police. One source downplayed the club’s presence in the city, suggesting the members fit the local wanna-be category and are not hard-core Outlaws. Other chapters include Sudbury, Trenton, Kingston, Peterborough and Ottawa.

Sault Ste-Marie, South Simcoe and Toronto have chapters in the making.

While the Outlaws, along with several other clubs that include Hells Angels, are regarded by police forces as nasty criminal elements, the Outlaws disagree.

According to the club website, members of the Outlaws are a bunch of guys who like to ride their choppers and have fun. Members, the site notes, have families, jobs and responsibilities, just like everyone else.

An organized crime/biker expert with strong local ties pointed out that Canada’s tough antiorganized crime laws are a good reason the nice guy image is promoted by the clubs. Sentences can range from five to 14 years.

“Unless you are a really tough guy (Mom Boucher comes to mind), doing time in the (federal) slammer quickly takes away the romance (of wearing the colours),” he said.

He said any serious club will acknowledge, when the evidence is overwhelming, that it has members who have committed crimes, but it will insist that those crimes were not done in the

club’s name.

The expert pointed out that he doesn’t know of any full patch member being booted from a club because of a criminal record, but they have killed their own for breaking rules, especially when it comes to the drug trade.

However, when it comes to flexing muscle outside the club(s) and taking on police and the public, veteran MC members are cautious and frown on members who step over this line. They know that this bring more pressure from law enforcement and is self-defeating in the long run.

The expert, who doesn’t want to be named, said Cornwall was on the Hells Angels’ radar in the early 1990s.

“The Hells tried to set up a puppet club (in Cornwall) back in the 1990s,” he said. “It didn’t work out.”

While the membership list isn’t on the Outlaws’ website, the expert said it usually takes at least six to form a chapter.

“I doubt if local members have serious criminal records, if at all,” he said.

In some cases, a motorcycle club can be a great crime stopper program for a neighbourhood.

Several years ago the Hells Angels bought a house in a Toronto neighbourhood and turned it into a club house. Before the Angels moved in, crimes like break-ins, car thefts, etc. were a problem for the neighbourhood. After the Angels moved in, it became a crime-free neighbourhood.

“They (Hells) were model neighbours. Quiet, polite and friendly,” said a retired Toronto cop who worked out of the station that patrolled the area. “The petty crooks went to another neighbourhood. They didn’t fear the cops or the justice system, but they were scared to death of the Angels.” ********** The North End Social Club mention in last week’s column brought back great memories for Cornwall Sports Hall of Famer Art Murphy.

Le fait que tant de personnes se soient volontairement engagées envers l’organisme et son mandat est une indication claire d’une large acceptation de la communauté », a déclaré Fernand Dicaire, président du conseil d’administration de la CNS. Traditional Scottish Events are the Heart and Soul of the Games Provided by the Glengarry Highland Games For centuries wherever highland games have been held, competitions take place in piping and drumming, highland dancing and the heavyweights. First held as tests of strength and agility among male competitors, modern Games have grown to include female athletes as well. The Glengarry Highland Games on August 3rd and 4th will proudly present some of the finest exhibitions of the best in these events.

Dancers Coming to the Games in Large Numbers

In highland dancing this year already over 200 dancers from across Canada and the United States have registered. During the two days of competition, events will be held for a variety of dance calibers. Pre-Premier, Restricted Premier and Premier National competitions take place on Friday. On Saturday, World Champions, North American, Canadian and Ontario Champions showcase their best in dancing at the Glengarry Highland Games Open Championship.

The Heavyweight Competitions Raise The Bar

A strong field has been entered into this year’s events with many international champions in the lineup. On Friday, the Professional Women’s group will start at 8 am with strong competition among Heather Boundy, Ontario, Susie Lajoie, British Columbia and Josee Morneau from Manitoba. Local favourites Lisa MacDonald from Alexandria and Laura Reusser formally of Martintown will certainly be looking to upset one of the events.

A competitor to watch for is Sultana Frizell from Perth, Ontario. She’s a Canadian Olympian and has just competed at her third Commonwealth Games this time in Australia in April. Sultana is in a class of her own after winning back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2014 setting a record in the hammer toss of 71.97 metres.

Along with Suzie Lajoie who holds two Canadian records, these two athletes will provide much excitement in the Professional Women’s events on Saturday.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall’s senior boys team the Cornwall Royals played some tight baseball during the provincial tournament held in Cornwall at Legion Ball Park from July 3 to July 5.

Cornwall faced off against four other Ontario teams.

Going into the finals of the tournament, the Cornwall Royals had not lost a single game.

The Provincial Championship game against the Orleans Red Sox was a close fight, but Orleans squeaked out a victory against the hometown team 4-3.

CORNWALL, Ontario - On June 29 a new sign was erected at Legion Ball Park in commemoration of Lutt Bergeron. It replaced the old Lutt Bergeron Field sign that was in disrepair.

Lutt was a major force in Cornwall Baseball

and his sons helped bring Legion Ball Park into reality. His grandson continues to be involved in Cornwall Minor Baseball as an organizer and as an umpire.

His family raised the money for the sign that stands in honour of a titan of Cornwall baseball.

MAXVILLE, Ontario – Dogs sprinted, swam, sniffed and soared during the fourth annual K9 Sport Fest, held from Saturday, July 14 to Sunday, July 15.

The weekend event featured 10 clubs and over 40 vendors. Participants could register to compete in any of the 10 clubs, which included dock jumping, sport scent detection, herding and more. Vendors sold niche products like organic, deliverable dog food, competition gear and pet toys.

Adult entry into the fairgrounds was $7 and children could spectate for free. Competitor registration fees varied depending on the activity, but the festival welcomed newcomers and professionals alike to test their abilities.

“Our goal is to grow it every year to become the Lollapalooza of dog sports,” said Daniel Santoro, co-founder of K9 Sport Fest.

Santoro, who started the festival with his wife, said it wouldn’t be possible without his workers, volunteers and generous sponsors. Next year, Santoro is planning to incorporate a dog midway, which will include games like balloon pop and

bobbing for balls, with prizes available.

Funds raised from the event are donated to shelters, rescues, and awareness organizations, based on location and dog breed.

“We always support the SDG and Cornwall OSPCA,” said Santoro. “We’re more than happy to raise money for them. They do an important job.

Particularly in our district, they have a lot of territory to cover and they are very underfunded.”

According to Santoro, hundreds of dogs attend the festival each year. This year, Saturday morning participation was affected by the rain, but Sunday’s bright weather compensated for

the lack of attendance.

Santoro believes that a working dog is a happy dog, and his three dogs are the ambassadors of the event. He also values affordable admission and entertainment, so he puts effort into keeping costs low.

“We’re local to this area, we do this to raise money for the SPCA, we do this to stimulate local economy, we do this to raise awareness to the way animal rights are important,” said Santoro.

Paddling for a cause Provided by the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall & District SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario - Glengarry resident Glenn O’Connor has been paddling in the Paddle Poker Run in Summerstown since 2010, helping to raise fund for the Alzheimer Society. O’Connor is joining his family and friends again on July 21st for this fun event, which holds a special place in his heart.

O’Connor’s 93 years old father Godfrey, also a long-time resident of Glengarry, was diagnosed with dementia 5 years ago. While his father dealt with the disease, Glenn’s mother, he and his siblings did what they could to accommodate the changes needed as the disease advanced, to care for Godfrey at home, including making sure he was never alone and he had access to his favourite window so he could see the bird-feeders. A retired poultry farmer, he was always an avid handy man and enjoyed metal working as a hobby, but that all had to stop as the effect of the dementia evolved. O’Connor’s father recently moved to a long-term care residence

and his mother continues to visit every other day, bringing a smile to his face because he still recognizes her.

In our community there are more than 3,600 individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. The impact is felt the most by family members, friends and colleagues, and the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District provides services and programs to assist those living with dementia, as well as the care partners and families.

O’Connor emphasizes that care partners must not hesitate to reach out to the Alzheimer Society from the onset of the journey: “Do not wait until you are in a crisis situation to seek out help.”

This is well known by Blair Bell, owner of Hybrid Marine in Summerstown, where the 9th Annual Paddle Poker Run is taking place next week. Blair’s mother lived with the disease and it is in her memory that this Paddle Poker Run began. “We wanted to raise awareness and collect funds in an entertaining way that encouraged anyone with an interest in paddling to join us, whether they were beginners or advanced in kayaking, canoeing, catamaran or

Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) board.”

The Paddle Poker Run has raised over $37,000 to support those in our community who are living with dementia. Bell invites everyone to come out to Hybrid Marine on July 21st to have fun on the water, experience complimentary neck and shoulder massages, have a chance to win the poker game and door prizes, enjoy delicious food and drinks, and generally have great camaraderie, whether or not you know someone with Alzheimer’s disease.

All monies raised go towards supporting those living with dementia as well as their families and caregivers in this area, for day programs and support services, counselling, and education programs that help people with dementia and their caregivers live better.

With more than 25,000 Canadians diagnosed with dementia each year and no cure yet, the need to support people with dementia and their caregivers has never been greater.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The City of Cornwall is seeking input from residents for their update to their Waste Management Master Plan.

The City held an open house at the Benson Centre on Thursday, July 12, 2018 and invited residents to give their ideas on how waste management could be done better.

“We are looking for feedback as to what waste management services people want in 2019,” said Danielle Watson, the City of Cornwall’s Waste Management Supervisor.

She gave examples as to some of the feedback they are looking for which includes, if people would be comfortable with a limit on garbage bags, mandatory recycling, a special service for large garbage items like mattresses.

The open house also provided some useful and interesting information for residents interested in learning about their waste management services in Cornwall.

For instance, the City of Cornwall provides waste management services to 22, 000, which costs $120 per-household per-year.

Currently, recycling is not mandatory in the City of Cornwall. Of the homes that receive waste management services, 58 percent recycle every week, while 77 percent put out garbage.

Those numbers become a little starker when compared to provincial averages. The average Cornwall household sends 444kg of waste to the dump every year, while the provincial average is 385kg per-household. In terms of recycling the average Cornwall household recycles 31kg a year, while the provincial average is 112kg.

Watson said that she had already been receiving some feedback from the public.

“We’ve had a lot of positive feedback about the bag limit,” Watson said.

She explained that most households only put out two-to-three bags of garbage weekly, which is where they wanted to be. She said one reason to consider the bag limit, was that as of now, there remains only 15 years worth of space left at Cornwall’s landfill site.

Mr. Jim McDonell (MPP) and Mr. Frank Provost (Deputy Mayor) opened the day at noon with a few words of welcome, after everything was kicked off by the South Glengarry Pipe Band.
