Crafting a Cure fast approaching

CORNWALL, Ontario – Hundreds of onlookers gathered around ‘Howard’ the pumpkin before his 150 ft. drop on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the parking lot of FreshCo. The 950 lb pumpkin, hoisted by MacGregor Crane Service, was part of the third annual Pumpkin Drop in support of Rachel’s Kids Supporters could purchase a ping pong ball that would be placed inside the pumpkin for $5. Almost 2,000 ping pong balls were sold.

After the pumpkin dropped, the ping pong ball to land the closest to the ‘X’ on the ground would win $1,000.

All proceeds raised will go back to Rachel’s Kids House of Hope, whether it be towards upgrading equipment or funding Small Moments of Joy. The ping pong ball that landed the closest to the ‘X’ was #943, belonging to Brandon Poirier.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Craft beer enthusiasts and local philanthropists are gearing up for this year’s Crafting a Cure on Friday, Nov. 2 at Nav Centre, beginning at 6 p.m.

Over 10 breweries from across the region will showcase a variety of popular beer selections. Each attendee will have the opportunity to sample from every establishment and enjoy food provided by Nav Centre. Tickets to the event are $60.

The beer tasting fundraiser is held in support of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), bringing awareness to the organization and the cause. More than 300,000 Canadians live with Type One Diabetes. The autoimmune disease currently has no cure and lowers the life expectancy of those that it affects by approximately 16 years. A representative from the foundation will be in attendance at the event to answer any questions.

Bill Makinson, the new Chairman of the event, avidly supported keeping the fundraiser in the community after attending the event for the last three years.

Makinson has also developed a greater appreciation for and understanding of craft beer.

Former CCVS basketball players reunite, surprise coach Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Coach Joe Sanborn, 85, made an impact on the lives of many of his former basketball players. On Saturday, Oct. 27, a group of them gathered together for a surprise reunion.

Sanborn, who turned 85 in June, originally grew up in the state of Maine. After graduating from St. Francis Xavier University, Sanborn and his wife moved around Canada and Maine, until he was offered a teaching job at CCVS in

Cornwall.

From 1963 to 1981, Sanborn coached basketball to high school students. Students from his first year of coaching attended the reunion, and some travelled from as far as the state of Georgia and B.C. During the reunion, heartfelt speeches were made. Many players emotionally expressed their gratitude towards Sanborn, recounting how he taught them many essential life skills and believed in each of them.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – Cornwall Community Cheer held their second annual Fall Craft Fair at Holy Trinity on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018.

This year, they had sold tables to 116 vendors and the halls and cafeteria of Holy Trinity were packed with a variety of vendors.

Cornwall Community Cheer uses the money raised from events like these to fund good initiatives throughout the year, but especially around Christmas time.

One crafter at the event was Leslie Hughes of Reckless Crafting. Hughes makes items themed around the Tim Burton movie The Nightmare Before Christmas from September to December every year and makes room décor for young adults year-round.

Her items and more can be found at the Purple Broomstick on Guy St. Last year’s Fall Craft Fair raised $7,000 for Cornwall Community Cheer, all of which they put back into the community.

The small forest of maple trees was first planted last year in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

In 2017 roughly 200 maple trees were planted.

This year a little more than 50 were planted to replace trees that had been damaged over the past year by wildlife.

Types of maple trees that were planted included black maples and sugar maples. All most all types of maple trees are included in this forest as red and silver maples were also planted last year.

The saplings were planted in the shape of a maple leaf, so in the future, when someone flies over the forest, they would see a maple leaf.

A plaque was also erected and unveiled dedicated to the new forest.

No good candidates?

When the results came in for this past municipal election last Monday, some were happy with the make-up of the new council, while others complained that there were too many familiar faces.

I started working at this job in the summer of 2016 and an important part of what I do involves working on social media. I read a lot of the comments and a common thread I’ve seen on stories that I’ve done about municipal politics are complaints about how things are run. This actually made me very optimistic for this year’s election.

When people are complaining, that to me tells me that they want change, and if someone wants change then they should get out and vote. This is not what happened however.

The residents of Cornwall did not get out and vote. Only 38 percent of the total potential voters went to the polls and of those, only 4.7 percent were under the age of 30. Nearly 60 percent of all voters in Cornwall in this election were over the age of 60.

What I’m about to say is not meant to take away anything from the ability of these men to serve as councillors, but I think a real reason why so many former councillors did well in

this election, was because the older generation recognized their names. A lot of people who voted likely remembered names like Syd Gardiner, Glenn Garry Grant and Denis Carr because they voted for these names 12 and 20 years ago. They wanted older and more seasoned councillors.

I saw excuses posted in the comments section of our story on voter turnout on Facebook.

Some said that they could find the time to go out and vote. There was advanced polling open several times starting on Oct. 11 at three different locations. I voted in advance on Friday, Oct. 12. I was the only one in the polling station and was out again in five minutes. Additionally, employers are required by law to give paid time for their employees to go and vote. Voting is a right and not a privilege.

Others commented that there were no good candidates to vote for in this election. There were 30 candidates running for council and four running for Mayor and out of all of those candidates people can claim that there wasn’t a single one they could bring themselves to vote for?

If anyone truly believes that there were no good candidates running in this past election, then I would have dearly liked to see them run for office themselves, because they really must be something special.

The worst excuse I probably heard as to why someone didn’t vote is because they either didn’t know the issues or felt that the election did not connect with them. This statement is just wrong.

Municipal government is the most important level of government in your lives. When Justin Trudeau went to India, the cost of the trip and some of the events that transpired made national headlines, but it didn’t affect the lives of few if any people in Cornwall. What does affect the lives and the future of residents in Cornwall? Property taxes, the development of

the waterfront, and maintenance of infrastructure affect the lives of people in Cornwall every day.

If Trudeau cancels Canada’s arms deal with Saudi Arabia tomorrow it will likely not affect anyone in Cornwall, but if a watermain breaks in front of someone’s house because the City hasn’t spent enough on infrastructure maintenance, that does have a local impact.

Scientists blame global warming to climate change. The Paris accord was signed to tackle global warming. On assuming power, President Trump decided to pull out of the Paris accord.

President Trump must be convinced global warming is a real threat.

Unless drastic steps are taken immediately, we will global warming at an alarming rate.

Climate change is proving even more disruptive than even scientists’ most pessimistic projections.

Global warming continues to be linked to disasters around the world and costs billions of dollars.

Most governments have pledged the end of the fossil fuel era. The United States of America accounts for one-seventh of the world’s carbon emissions.

The Cornwall Raging Robots Robotics Club had a chance to meet with Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa on Sunday, Oct. 21.

The members of the Cornwall Raging Robots Robotics Club had a chance to ask Dr. Thirsk some questions for the First Lego League The annual Hospice Telethon is taking place Challenge Into Orbit in December, in which the this weekend. Last year, the YourTV Hospice Cornwall Robotics Club is participating.

Telethon raised $168,000 for Carefor Hospice Cornwall. Running from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, supporters and viewers of the telethon will be entertained by local acts such as Melissa Dionne, Bob & Ducky and Mike McNanny.The YourTV Hospice Telethon is the biggest fundraiser for Hospice of the year.

Carefor Hospice Cornwall needs to raise $600,000 annually to maintain its services. To contribute to Hospice during the Telethon on Nov. 3, call 613-937-7762.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Gerry Benson, 78, of Benson Group, passed away this weekend.

“We ask everyone to allow us the time to grieve as a family,” reads a press release from the Benson Group on behalf of the family.

“We are grateful for the privacy during this difficult time.”

Benson passes away

NEWS Local community leaders invite the generous Cornwall community to support cardiac care for their neighbours Just over 100 km away, there is a place Cornwall residents heap praise upon time and time again. It isn’t a place they plan to visit but are forever grateful they did. Just ask local resident Pamela Taylor.

Pamela underwent triple bypass surgery nearly two decades ago and more recently, when she believed she was having issues with fluid retention, she went to the Emergency Room at the Cornwall Community Hospital. That visit led Pamela to the Respiratory Care and Heart Function Clinic and then, with a referral from Cornwall Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Specialist Dr. Paul DeYoung, she was connected to the Heart Institute in Ottawa. At the Heart Institute, Pamela met with Dr. Sharon Chih where numerous tests and medication changes followed.

When her heart rate became the issue in May of this year, a pacemaker was implanted. Thanks to the Ottawa Heart Institute, Pamela’s heart rate is regular again.

The doctors, nurses, and staff have always made me feel comfortable, and are just a phone call away if I have any questions.“ – Pamela Taylor Last year, 6,480 patient visits to the Ottawa Heart Institute were from patients like Pamela who live in Stormont Dundas Glengarry.

Over 68% of these visits were for diagnostic testing using equipment purchased with donations, and 48% of these visits were for open heart surgery and other life saving procedures.

The Heart Institute serves not only the entirety of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network, comprised of 20 hospitals and many more referral centres across dozens of communities, but it also serves cardiac patients from across the country who are referred by their

physicians. The Heart Institute works closely with Cornwall Community Hospital and local doctors who refer patients to the Heart Institute for most cardiac diagnostics and all cardiac surgeries. In addition, Heart Institute programs like the cardiac rehabilitation and prevention program extend to Cornwall.

Dr. Paul DeYoung, the doctor who referred Pamela to the Heart Institute has this to say; “The Ottawa Heart Institute is a vital hub of our integrated regional cardiac care. Acute life threatening cardiac conditions are treated immediately with world class diagnostic and interventional surgical care. As a physician who has managed cardiac care in the Cornwall area and also directed the Critical Care unit at the Cornwall Community Hospital, I know that our patients receive promptly the very best care possible from this international leader in research and care.”

Along with a dedicated group of community leaders, including The Honourable Ed Lumley and Tom and Gail Kaneb, Dr. DeYoung is taking a lead role in a Cornwall fundraising appeal to raise $1,000,000 to help the Heart Institute complete equipment purchases. State-of-theart equipment, like the kind used to save lives every day, can only be purchased with funds raised in the community.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Residents of Cornwall are invited to An Intimate Evening, with the First Lady of Guitar Liona Boyd.

Boyd is coming to Aultsville Theatre in Cornwall on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Boyd said she is excited to return to Cornwall, and recently passed through the area on a VIA Rail train on her way back from Storyfest in Hudson. She said that while in Hudson, she met several fans who were excited to see her show in Cornwall.

Boyd is being accompanied on this tour by her young protégé, Andrew Dolson.

Boyd said that her performance will include a mix of songs across a variety of albums.

“There is a lot of variety and I hope people bring their kids,” she said. “If people can be exposed to good music and classical guitar, they might be inspired like I was.”

Boyd said that this show will not be one to miss because it is likely to be her last show in Cornwall.

“I’m almost positive that it will be the last time I visit these smaller communities,” she said.

Boyd explained that she hopes to start work on other projects, like writing children’s books.
