Telethon brings in over $130K for Hospice Cornwall

CORNWALL, Ontario - From 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 on YourTV Cornwall, volunteers manned phones, volunteers entertained the TV audience and volunteers got the word out about the important work that Carefor Hospice Cornwall does in the community.

In response, viewers called in and donated $133,401 in six hours in support of Hospice.

Since 2009, Carefor Hospice Cornwall has supported 1,500 patients and their families during the most difficult times in their lives.

Viewers of the telethon were be entertained by local acts such as Melissa Dionne, Bob & Ducky and Mike McNanny.

In addition to the entertainment, the audience heard testimonials from family members who’s loved ones had been cared for by Hospice Cornwall.

“We really thank the families who do their testimonials,” said Carefor Hospice Cornwall Fundraising Coordinator Sandy Collette. “We know that it isn’t easy to do, but we’re grateful

that they do it.”

The YourTV Hospice Telethon is the biggest fundraiser for Hospice of the year. Carefor Hospice Cornwall needs to raise $600,000 annually to maintain its services.

CORNWALL, Ontario - This Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Called the War to End all Wars, this was naively optimistic. None the less, there were many young men who fought and died believing that they would help bring peace to the world. Some of those men came from Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G. Two of those men were brothers, James J. Russell, #183 of the Fourth Field Co. Canadian Engineers and Andy Russell of the 78th Battery draft, Seventh Army Post.

While he waited in England, Andy Russell wrote the following poem:

By Andy Goodbye, little sister and mother too Also dad, and all.

Don’t you be lonely and wait for me, If in battle I should fall.

As I’m only a boy, like many lads Who’s battling for Canada’s own.

Like ones, who gave their Youthful lives and left someone alone.

It may have been a sweet-heart, or A mother, old and gray, Who waits alone, with head bowed-down For her boy who marched away.

So don’t be worrying, but think well of me And for me, say a little prayer, As I’ll do my best, like the boys of the west, While fighting in France somewhere.

Crafting a Cure Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario - Crafting a Cure returned to Cornwall for a sixth year on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018.

Held again at the Nav Centre, 14 breweries were on site an 483 tickets out of a possible 500 were sold in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

This was the first year that the event was not organized by Jeff and Cherie Lalonde. Jeff and Cherie began the event to support children suffering from juvenile diabetes, which their children have been diagnosed with.

Bill Makinson, one of this year’s organizers said that Crafting a Cure would not be as strong an

event as it is today without the groundwork the Lalonde’s laid.

More than 300,000 Canadians live with Type One Diabetes. The autoimmune disease currently has no cure and lowers the life expectancy of those that it affects by approximately 16 years. A representative from the foundation will be in attendance at the event to answer any questions.

Funds were raised through tickets sales and a silent auction with items provided by sponsors from the community. Entertainment was provided by the Shiners. Speeches were made by those afflicted with diabetes, including Seaway News’s own Shawna O’Neill, who has had Type 1 diabetes since the age of 10. O’Neill explained to the

audience that she has to inject herself with insulin six or more times a day and that she truly believes in the efforts of the JDRF in working to cure the disease. The event saw great success this year, raising $25,000 for JDRF. Event goers were so eager to give, that at one point they were able to auction off a bucket of air for $300.

“We can’t thank our sponsors enough for doing this,” said Makinson. “Thanks to Jeff and Cherie for starting this event six years ago.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Canadian Cancer Society of SD&G and Prescott-Russell in partnership with Play it Again Sports in Cornwall is running a unique campaign to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

The month of November officially kicks off Hockey Fights Cancer season. “This Jock is No Joke” is a local campaign being used to encourage men in our community to take the necessary steps to get tested for prostate cancer. Hockey is a way of life for many in Canada, unfortunately so too is cancer. In support of this campaign local cancer survivors affected by prostate and testicular cancer gathered at Play it Again Sports in Cornwall to sport some jocks and encourage men to get tested for prostate cancer early.

Through the campaign, the Canadian Cancer Society is encouraging local hockey teams to also rally together and Face Off against cancer. Teams

Teams who want to participate can register at cancer.ca/ hockeyfightscancer Prostate cancer is most commonly found in men aged 50 and older, but survivors like Doug Nugent say that it is being found in younger and younger men. To help support the fight against prostate cancer and to raise awareness, on Nov. 23 Play it Again Sports will be accepting donations which will go to the Canadian Cancer Society and be designated to prostate cancer. On Nov. 15, the Canadian Cancer Society is teaming up with the Ottawa Senators and are inviting minor hockey teams to go and watch them play the Detroit Red Wings. Tickets are $40. With the municipal election now firmly in the rear-view mirror I wanted to take a moment to shift focus to provincial politics.

If Doug Ford’s new Conservative government has been anything, then it is busy.

Since the Ford government came to power five months ago we have seen the cancellation of the GreenON subsidy program, a change in the sex ed curriculum, a fight with Toronto City Council and now, just five months after being elected we’ve seen our first cabinet shuffle.

None of these decisions directly affect many of our local readers however, but there has been a change in the way that local non-profits are funded that has affected at least one important local organization.

Some of you may have seen earlier this week Cornwall Seaway News published on our website a story by our Reporter Shawna O’Neill about how Sexual Assault Support Services for Women (SASS) is still waiting on $93,000 from the provincial Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG). SASS was expecting this money in April, but they have still yet to receive it and worse yet, they say that MAG has stopped returning their calls and emails about the matter.

SASS has seen 363 clients in Cornwall, SD&G and Akwesasne in the past three months. Part of the money there were expecting to receive would have been used to help with that backlog, while some of it would be used to hire a male councillor to work with male sexual assault survivors.

SASS was awarded the money through a $14.8 million fund established by the Wynne Liberals to increase the budgets of sexual assault support organizations by 33 percent over three years.

I reached out to MPP Jim McDonell, who told me that he had taken this issue to the Ministry himself. McDonell said that the previous government had made a lot of promises without considering the Treasury’s ability to pay. He said that MAG was reviewing a list of priorities and hoped that there would still be space for the money promised to SASS. If I receive a comment from MAG, I will include it here on this page next week.

My opinion and my belief about this situation is that the Ford government is seeking to undo the legacy of the Kathleen Wynne, while also cutting costs. I think that the Ford government will want to deliver on its promise to cut costs, but I don’t think that should come at the expense of important community organizations

like SASS. I believe that taxpayer money should always be spent wisely, and review of expenditures is the best way to do this, but that needs to happen in a timely manner. The government must deliver promised funds on schedule because local organizations rely on this funding and not having it puts them and their community into a bind.

The demand for organizations like SASS is

going up, not down, and when they suffer financially, the community suffers. Local non-profits like SASS have a major impact on the lives of people living in Cornwall.

letter to the editor Dear Editor, Perhaps a major reason for the low voter turnout in last month’s civic election is the very fact that voters were confronted with a slate of 30 council candidates, from which they could choose up to ten. Knowing precisely whom to choose was next to impossible for any voter, even those who were well-aware of the issues at stake and who wished to use those votes judiciously. Candidates’ publicity, which for monetary reasons was understandably quite limited, was inevitably short on detail and limited to ‘motherhood’ type statements. There were lawn

signs a-plenty, but they told you absolutely nothing except that an election was imminent; in fact, they only added to voter distress and confusion, as a plethora of mostly unfamiliar names appeared to sprout daily on every street corner. Unless you were both able and prepared to go out yourself to a candidates’ meeting, in my experience at least, there was zero chance that they or their canvassers would be meeting you at your door.

For most people, seeking out 30 web sites of each candidate’s bio and platform was just not going to happen either (especially given that

some were totally non-existent). The idea that 25 000 or so potential electors should email 30 separate candidates for information was also quite nonsensical, although as a last resort that was in fact what I myself did out of frustration my other option being to very reluctantly abstain from voting at all. Thankfully in my case, this, plus a bit of on-line research and news media reports brought sufficient result to enable me to cast ballots for 5 candidates, especially as about 1/3rd of them didn’t even respond to the brief and very specific email I sent - so much for the patently ridiculous notion that, as things presently stand, each council member supposedly responds to the needs and issues of each and every elector!

Given all the above, who can blame voters for opting for that familiar name and face rather than take an ill-informed and inherently risky electoral shot in the dark? Or even of opting out of voting entirely, as evidently so many did, especially if newcomers to Cornwall?

At some point before the next civic election, the issues of council’s composition and how that should be determined in future clearly need serious re-evaluation, with a view to considerable amendment. Hopefully, our new mayor and council will to be both willing and up to the task of addressing these issues before 2022 rolls around.

Sanborn, a native of Portland, Maine, coached the Raiders from 1963 to 1981. His team’s won a truckload of league championships. Sanborn earned legendary status. He was to the CCVS basketball program what the legendary Art Anderson was to the St. Lawrence High School football program.

When detective Bernard Arthur opened the back door to the police cruiser on Nov. 5, 1958 on a side road near Williamstown the unshackled prisoner threw a handful of salt into the Cornwall police officer’s eyes and made a run for it.

Arthur’s partner, Det. Herb Raymond, whipped out his service revolver and fired a “warning” shot at the fleeing escapee who disappeared into the bush. A few hours later one of the biggest manhunts in the United Counties, involving 40 police officers, was under way.

The 29-year-old native of the Williamstown area was being held in Cornwall Jail after pleading guilty to 14 break-in and theft charges and four armed robberies. Before being transported to federal prison to serve a lengthy sentence he volunteered to take police to the Williamstown area where he claimed most of the stolen loot was hidden.

For whatever reason, he wasn’t handcuffed for the ride.

While on the run the fugitive managed to make his way back to Cornwall where he stole a car from the lot of Brookshell Motors then robbed Major’s Cities Service Station on Brookdale Avenue of $70. The description given by attendant Ronnie Deschamps, 18, matched the wanted man. He had robbed the same gas station in October.

Three days into the manhunt Inspector of Detectives Ed Osler, Det. Maurice Brunet and Const. Stan Harkin came across the escaped criminal in the bush near North Lancaster.

When confronted by the three heavily armed officers, the escapee calmly threw up his hands and announced, “Well, guess you got me.”

A few days later he pleaded guilty to several more charges and was on his way to Kingston Pen, vowing to turn his life around.

Brockville Collegiate defeated St. Lawrence Saints 25-14 to win the EOSSA football title, ending SLHS’ three-year reign. Kenny Roy and Paul Charron had the Saints’ touchdowns. ...

Roma Labrecque had three goals to lead Comets to a 5-2 win over Colts in Cornwall Junior B Hockey League play. ********** Mort Belmore, the Cornwall Sports Hall of Famer (1996) who passed away last month at age 85, was a member of that great 1950s junior club the Inkerman Rockets that despite not having a home rink (population 100) went deep into the 1950-51 Memorial Cup playoffs, losing in the eastern Canada semi-final to Quebec City Citadels. The big star for the Citadels was a guy named Jean Beliveau.

Mort, the quintessential little guy who played big, played senior hockey in his hometown with the Pontiacs, Colts and Chevies. ********** During one of the municipal candidates’ gatherings a woman stepped up to the microphone, not with a question for the mayoral candidates but a terse, well-aimed response to a comment from a member of the audience who in beating the shop local drum said he preferred to spend his money at local speciality shops rather than buying “the junk they sell at Walmart.”

“I shop at Walmart,” said the woman, “because on my social assistance cheque I can’t afford to shop where you shop.”

She received a well-deserve round of applause. ********** Former Cornwall Collegiate senior boys’ basketball coach Joe Sanborn thought he was coming to somebody else’s birthday party when he showed up at Rob Taylor’s home in South Stormont on Oct. 27.

Instead, he was greeted by a large gathering of his former players, some of whom came from British Columbia, Kingston, Montreal, Ottawa and Georgia to help Sanborn celebrate his 85th birthday.

Highlanders, 1st Battalion and was sent to the Isle of Wight on a special assignment with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry to train with the British Commandos. He then served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He fought at Dieppe, where he was critically wounded. “All I say is, it’s too bad we have to be, we can’t live on this planet without fighting one another.” – Ernest Randle Ernie was proud to serve Canada during WWII in the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve where he was engaged in escort duties in the North Atlantic, in the far northern seas, crossing the Arctic Circle, to Murmansk, as well as patrols in the English Channel during the invasion of Normandy.

And because they did, you and I are free That’s why we wear a poppy, you see.

I had a boy about your size, With golden hair and big blue eyes.

When he smiled at me and said, ‘Goodbye, I’ll be back soon, Mum, please don’t cry.’

But the war went on and he had to stay, And all I could do was wait and pray.

His letters told of the awful fight (I can see it still in my dreams at night), With the tanks and guns and cruel barbed wire, And the mines and bullets, the bombs and fire.

Till at last, at last, the war was won And that’s why we wear a poppy, son.”

The small boy turned as if to go, Then said, “Thanks, lady, I’m glad to know.

That sure did sound like an awful fight But your son - did he come back all right?”

A tear rolled down each faded cheek; She shook her head, but didn’t speak I slunk away in a sort of shame, And if you were me, you’d have done the same: For our thanks, in giving, if oft delayed, Though our freedom was bought - and thousands paid!

And so, when we see a poppy worn, Let us reflect on the burden borne By those who gave their very all When asked to answer their country’s call That we at home in peace might live.

Then wear a poppy! Remember - and Give!

CASSELMAN, Ontario - La Corporation de la revitalisation du centre-ville de Casselman est fière de dévoiler sa programmation complète et d’annoncer les nouveautés de sa 11e édition. Le plus attendu Festival de Noël dans l’Est ontarien, qui se déroulera du jeudi 29 novembre au dimanche 2 décembre, offrira encore cette année une gamme de spectacles enchantés, des expositions artistiques, des activités sportives et des activités des plus typiques du temps des fêtes. « Quatre jours d’animation et de décors féériques, plus de 25 activités festives et des performances d’artistes des plus excitantes les unes que les autres, c’est ce qui attend les visiteurs du Festival de Noël cette année, » de dire Jovette Richer, présidente du Festival de Noël de Casselman. « Pour l’occasion, nous plongerons les festivaliers dans l’esprit et les traditions des fêtes avec une foule d’activités pour toute la famille ».

Dans le cadre de la 11e édition du Festival de Noël, la Corporation de revitalisation propose trois nouvelles initiatives : 1. CONTE DE NOËL ILLUMINÉ Une histoire de Noël bien spéciale sera illustrée sur la rue Principale à Casselman. Cette oeuvre d’art extérieure, développée par des artistes locaux, saura enchanter les plus petits comme les plus grands! Aucune chance de la manquer! Elle brillera de mille feux tout au long du Festival.

2. KUMPA’NIA Kumpa’nia, une troupe populaire de tambours ambulants avec chorégraphies dynamiques et costumes flamboyants, défilera dans le centre-ville de Casselman à divers moments le samedi 1er décembre. Une expérience unique à ne pas manquer lors du Festival cette année!

3. VIVE LE TEMPS DES BIÈRES! Venez déguster des bières locales avec de succulents fromages et saucissons le samedi 1er décembre. Présentée en collaboration avec la Microbrasserie Cassel, cette délicieuse

dégustation sera accompagnée de musique entraînante par l’équipe de Nova sous le grand chapiteau chauffé. Le Festival de Noël présente encore cette année ses activités traditionnelles les plus populaires : SPECTACLE À L’ÉGLISE STE-EUPHÉMIE C’est avec grand plaisir que le Festival de Noël accueillera le groupe vocal TOCADÉO le 1er décembre. Age 88, passed away peacefully at Woodland Villa, Long Sault, on Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Frances was born in Montréal on June 4, 1930. Frances is survived by her beloved husband Robert Bedingfield of Aultsville, whom she married on April 23, 1952, and sons Stephen (Lynn) of Yellowknife, John (Corinna) of Ingleside, and Stuart (Dot) of Mountain, and seven grandchildren: Patrick, Raván, Jordan, Dustin, Stephanie, Samantha, Chelsea, and several greatgrandchildren. Predeceased by her parents John & Norna (Mitchell) Healy and her brother John Healy, she will be remembered by her twin sister Myrtle Dow, and sister-in-law Shirley Wells. Frances will be remembered for her involvement with the church and her volunteer work.

Funeral service will be held at St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church, Ingleside, on Friday, November 9th at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A reader asks: when will the city install turning signal lights at the corners of Brookdale and Tollgate Ave. Traffic is heavy enough to have turning signals turning left from Tollgate onto Brookdale. All they have to do is take the ones off at the Home Depot laneway and Tollgate and move them west of it. They don’t use them to make left turns, put them into good use before somebody gets seriously injured at that corner.

The Golden Years

They weren’t in my pockets. Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car.

Frantically, I headed for the parking lot. My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car’s ignition. He’s afraid that the car could be stolen.

As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right. The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband: “I left my keys in the car and it’s been stolen.” There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice. “Are you kidding me?” he barked. “I dropped you off!”

Now it was my turn to be silent.

Embarrassed, I said. “Well, come and get me.”

He retorted. “I will; just as soon as I convince this cop that I didn’t steal your damn car!”
