CORNWALL, Ontario - Sparky had a little help collecting for the annual Sparky’s Toy Drive on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018.

There were 18 volunteer firefighters and one bus driver who travelled around to 27 different locations in Cornwall, playing music on guitars, singing Christmas Carols, and collecting toys.

“We have two goals today,” said Cornwall firefighter Pat Elliot. “One is to make sure that every kid has a gift for Christmas and the second is to make sure that everyone has a safe Christmas.”

For their second goal Elliot said that the firefighters were reminding everyone that day to check their smoke alarms this holiday season.

The firefighters were collecting hundreds of toys, enough to fill a cube van and part of a

school bus.

The toys will be sorted at the Agapè Centre and distributed on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the Cornwall Armoury by the Cornwall Optimist Club.

The firefighters have been helping Sparky with his toy drive for more than 20 years.

“I want to help give back to the community,” said Elliot. “It is an easy one to do. Yes, it is a lot of work, but there is a definite need for it.”

“That mission was really a dream come true,” he said. “I was blasting off on the Atlantis and I really didn’t have anything to compare to a flight on a rocket.”

Feustel has travelled on both the now retired American space shuttles and on the Russian Soyuz capsules. He said that the Soyuz capsules were smoother up, but harder when they come down.

He also commented on the accommodations in space on the International Space Station (ISS).

“It’s not as small as you might think,” he said.

“It is possible to make it a whole day without seeing one another.”

His wife Indira is very proud of her husband’s skill and accomplishments.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Astronaut Andrew “Drew” Feustel visited Cornwall the week of Dec. 12 and he sat down with Cornwall Seaway News along with his wife Indira for an interview about his life experience as an astronaut.

Feustel has spent over 60 hours walking in space, across nine spacewalk missions, the third most of any person in history.

When asked why he wanted to become an astronaut, Feustel said that he was inspired to explore space at a young age.

“I was inspired by science fiction programs and an interest in pushing the limits of technology,” he said.

He has travelled to space three times. The first time was in 2009 on the Space Shuttle

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Rusty Dawson of Richard’s Landing, ON, heard that NASA astronaut Andrew Feustel was coming to Cornwall, he did not want to miss his chance.

Dawson has a passion for all things space and started collecting the signature of astronauts roughly 10-years-ago.

The first signature Dawson ever got was from astronaut Jack Lousma. Lousma was selected by NASA in 1966 and served on the Apollo 9, 10 and 13 missions.

Since getting his first signature, Dawson has met well over 100 astronauts and has a few NASA posters covered in signatures.

Dawson was at the Team Cornwall Year in Review on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018 and hoped to get Feustel to become the 100th astronaut to sign his latest poster.

“They all have such amazing stories,” Dawson said. “You get as close as you can to their experiences through their stories and pictures.”

“We decided to go as a group to help local kids,” said Michelle Longtin of Pure Organic Spa. The group of business owners and professionals, who denote themselves as the Getting Involved initiative, decided to host their first ever Toy Drive together in support of the Optimist Club of Cornwall Children’s Christmas Fund.

“We’re all friends and all business owners,” explained Longtin. “We all donate individually usually so we though as a group we can help even more.”

From toys, to gift cards and new clothing, donations can be brought to each business that is a part of the initiative.

Everyone who gives a Toy Drive donation is automatically entered into a draw to win one of six prizes.

Longtin feels that the Toy Drive has been successful thus far and is encouraging everyone to shop local and get involved.

“It’s the time of giving. So now is the time to get involved and help local kids,” said Longtin.

“Some people just want to give back but they don’t know where, or what to do, so this is perfect (for that),” she added.

This summer, I took a “history break” for health reasons, and I promised you I would continue writing as soon as possible. (Life gets a little tricky balancing a full time job, online classes, my history hobby, my newfound love for woodworking/painting/crafting, health issues, and life in general.) Well, guess who’s back! I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for your kind words, well wishes, and for your patience.

As a “come back” article, I wanted to discuss history on the outskirts of Cornwall, about a tiny community that will always hold a special place in my heart thanks to my ancestors.

Martintown, a tiny community in the township of South Glengarry, Ontario, will always have a special place in my heart. Martintown is one of the three communities that became home to many of my ancestors (St. Raphael’s and Williamstown, being the other two.)

Martintown is the town where my mother grew up, and over the years I have often lived vicariously through her while she recited many of her childhood stories to me.

Between 1801 and 1803, Malcolm McMartin built a wooden grist mill, saw mill, and carding mill. By the late 1820s Malcolm’s son, Alexander, had completely taken over operation of all three mills. The Martintown Mill that is currently standing, was built by Alexander McMartin in 1846. This four-storey stone grist mill was built with local fieldstones, and replaced the original mills that his father had erected.

Like similar operations throughout the province, these mills provided the tiny community and the surrounding counties with much needed flour, feed for farm animals, textiles and lumber. Due to their excessive popularity, the McMartin’s Mills became a local meeting ground for the town’s people. The mills attracted tradesmen, business men and residents, creating the village of Martintown. It has been stated that in its early years of operation, that McMartin’s Mills was a more important settlement than Cornwall.

Despite the market becoming increasingly dominated by larger competitors, Alexander McMartin’s Mill continued to operate until 1951.

Since 1997 the mill has been owned and maintained by The Martintown Mill Preservation Society. They are a non-profit organization, and the Mill is open to the public most weekends.

Where did 2018 go? Can we really be less than a week away from Christmas?

I really need to get around to Christmas shopping too, but in all this rush I need to remind myself, and I’d like to remind all of you, to not forget about those less fortunate.

Individuals, groups and organizations in town are hard at work this season to make sure everyone can have a good Christmas and hope for the New Year.

The Cornwall Fire Fighters have been helping Sparky with his annual Toy Drive to ensure that no child is left without a toy this Christmas.

The Agora Centre is organizing a lunch on Christmas Day to ensure that no one has to spend Christmas alone.

And Rachel’s Kids and Kids Korner gave three sick kids a special Christmas gift when they let them have the run of the toy store so they could forget about doctors appointments and chemotherapy for awhile.

The need however, does not stop at Boxing Day. It goes on, year-round.

This year saw a desperate plea from the Agapè Centre over the summer as they faced a food shortage. It is in fact the summer, where they Agapè Centre sees the greatest demand on their food bank and kitchen, with the number of people using their soup kitchen exceeding over 150 people daily.

Keep the less fortunate in mind this Christmas, and for a New Year’s resolution, why not commit to spending one hour a week making someone else’s life, a little better.

Dear Editor, I Just wanted to show my appreciation for some excellent attention and care that my son received in the ER in October of this year. My teenaged son, Jahred of his own accord decided to stop his asthma medications during the summer and never restarted them come school in September.

When October rolled around, he caught himself a bad cold. We ended up at Cornwall Community Hospital at 4:30 am one night because he was unable to breathe, or even lay down because it constricted his breathing so much! He received attention by a nurse an attending ER

physician within a fairly short period of time and given medications and then released at about 7:15 am. But that was not the end of the story!

By the time we got back home, the Ventolin treatments were already starting to wearing off and his inhaler was not keeping his lungs open enough for him to breathe! So back to the hospital he went, a few hours later! Jahred was not doing well and he was in bad shape! He was unable to walk more than a few steps without feeling dizzy, wheezing, and coughing. Everything had returned with a vengeance! This time he was put into the capable hands of Dr. Greemberg the attending pediatric physician who FORTUNATELY

Cornwall Curling Centre, came away with a bronze medal. The third best team in a nation known for its high caliber of curling. Fantastic!

In order to go there they had to be the best in Ontario. They proved that a few weeks earlier. Prior to that they had to play the best in three local curling zones. They did that at the Cornwall Curling Centre, in front of an enthusiastic crowd, losing only one game during the entire competition. It was magical to see them running back two and sometimes three of opposition stones to leave theirs in scoring position. Equally exciting was

wonderful caring physician! This is a doctor who REALLY REALLY cared about my son! Because of the seriousness of his case, my son was later transferred to CHEO by ambulance. Fortunately this time, because my son was so well cared for in Cornwall, he did not end up in the ICU at CHEO. He spent 3 days there, and then was released.

Before this happened to us, I had never even heard of a pediatrician named Dr. Greemberg in the Cornwall area. However now I can say, I will never forget that name! Dr. Greemberg is a true blessing to all pediatric patients in Cornwall and area!

During the bronze medal game, Matt had to hit his own team’s stone on the outside corner and drive it at an angle of about 150 degrees to knock the opponents stone out of scoring position and leave his own in play. The two sweepers were ready to do constant sweeping and the other player was in the House calling line. It was the perfect example of true team effort. Each person playing his role to perfection to enable the Skip to

make a great shot to win the game and the medal.

After all that effort and excitement they are now home, playing their usual good game at the Centre.

Even if you are not a regular curler it is worthwhile going to the Centre to watch them on Wednesday nights. The results are not always predictable. Hey, it’s curling and any team can win once in awhile and that is what makes it interesting.

Dear Editor We have a gem in our presence. It consists of four talented people who are the best in Ontario and the third best in Canada. They are a team of curlers that consists of Skip; Matt Dupuis, ViceSkip; Terry Lichty , Second; John King and Lead; Charles Wert.

During the week of November 18, 2018, there was a gathering of the best club curling teams from all over Canada, in Miramichi, New Brunswick.

This basically means the best genuine club curling teams in the world. Team Dupuis, from the

We’re skipping the usual Musings fare for something in tune with the season, leading off with a flashback to the week leading up to Christmas 1958, when things were a little different.

For instance, the Bell Telephone office on Pitt Street was bracing for its second busiest day of the year, Christmas Day, when it expected to handle at least 3,400 operator assisted long distance calls. Second busiest day was expected to be New Year’s Day when the long distance call volume normally topped 3,600.

Management at the local office said 80 telephone operators would cover the day in two shifts. It cautioned that some calls would take longer than normally to be put through.

And over at the post office, the busiest time of the year - three weeks before Dec. 25 - was winding down. To accommodate the Christmas rush, the post office had hired 35 people to help sort and deliver the mail. Beginning two weeks before Christmas, city homes received twice-a-day delivery, Saturdays included. * The Oasis was open for dancing on Christmas Night with the ‘Oasis Seven’ with band leader Charlie James providing the music.

Admission was $1 per person. * Jade Garden Restaurant and New York Cafe were having full course Chinese Christmas Day

dinners. Benoit’s Restaurant, 610 Montreal Rd., noted that it never closes and would be open Christmas Day. * City garbage contractor Labelle and Clement reminded residents that there would be no garbage collection Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. * The Palace Theatre was showing ‘The Littlest Hobo’ on Christmas Day. The box office would open at 3 p.m. * A Christmas Card signed by the 21 members of The Standard-Freeholder newsroom appeared on the local page in the Dec. 24 edition. And, following tradition, the lead editorial was the Christmas Story as told in Luke 2: 1-20. * Children’s Christmas Fund reached its target of $4,000 to deliver Christmas hampers to needy city families. Each hamper contained $10 worth of groceries and goodies. * The eight Cornwall dairies would not have Christmas Day home delivery. The dairies were Phillips, Eastside, Canadian, Daisy, Maple Crest, Rivermead, Maple Leaf and Cameron’s. * Cpl. Doug Chenier of Cornwall was spending Christmas serving with the United Nations force in the Middle East. * A Morrisburg man found guilty of being intoxicated in a public place was spending Christmas in the city jail. He was sentenced to 15 days. He asked for jail time. * Cornwall Street Railway Light and Power Co. buses and trolleys would operate on Christmas Day from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. * Albert Forrest of Tollgate Road received an early Christmas gift. He won the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 $5,000 draw.

LONG SAULT, Ontario – The Sault Crew was busy getting residents in the holiday spirit on Saturday, Dec. 15, offering wagon rides around the village between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“We do this every year with the wagon rides,” explained Shane Perry, volunteer with the Sault Crew. “We decorate a wagon, go through the village, look at lights and get the community together.”

The wagon, pulled by a tractor, was adorned with Christmas lights and tinsel this year. On

board was a stereo playing Christmas tunes. In exchange for a magical ride around the community, residents were asked to donate a nonperishable food item to the Long Sault Legion, which will be donated to a local food bank.

Attendees could warm up inside the Legion with food and refreshments.

Although there was more grass than snow on the ground during the evening of wagon rides, Perry said that the event inevitably gets everyone in the holiday spirit.

“Once we start going around the village, everyone sees and heads out. They know, it has become kind of a tradition,” said Perry.

SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – After brief discussion during their second official meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 12, the new South Stormont council decided to opt-in on having retail cannabis stores in the municipality.

South Stormont is the first municipality in SDG to officially vote to opt-in. Peter Young, Community Planner for the Township of South Stormont, outlined three plausible options to council in regards to the action request but recommended that council opt-in.

“The province has set up the application process for a license which is very similar to (acquiring a) liquor license,” said Young.

Councillor Woods was the first to express her uncertainty, admitting that she wanted to learn more about the possible advantages and disadvantages before making a decision.

In response, Deputy Mayor David Smith expressed his keen support of permitting the retail stores in the municipality.

“My concern would be if we don’t jump on it sooner or later, that (provincial funding) money may not be available…we have so little time (to decide),” said Smith.

“Although the funds that are going to be offered to the municipality are quite nominal, in my impression, I think that our neighbouring municipalities are likely to opt-in as well,”added Councillor MacIsaac.

Councillor Guindon proposed that the public be consulted on the decision and that council propose encourage discussion online. Councillor Guindon also concurred that by permitting retail stores in the community, the black market will likely further be eradicated. OPP Cst. Jim Blanchette, Community Mobilization Officer, was in attendance and agreed with this sentiment.

Mayor Bryan McGillis said that he had done extensive research on the topic and believed that permitting retail stores in the municipality would be beneficial for the community in terms of taxes and providing safe options for residents.

Council unanimously voted in favour to opt in on permitting cannabis stores in the community, with intentions to seek public consultation and

further discuss the action request before adopting all according policies.

“Moved by Councilor Guindon, seconded by Councilor Woods, the council opts in to permitting retail cannabis stores in the Township of South Stormont and instructs staff to post a draft Township of South Stormont Cannabis Retail Application Review Policy on the township website for public consultation,” said Loriann Harbers, CMO, Director of Corporate Services Clerk for thr Township.

All municipalities in the province must opt-in or opt-out of the initiative prior to Jan. 22, 2019.

Former city resident offers useful tips for scaling Africa’s highest mountain Sultan Jessa

CORNWALL, Ontario - A former city resident and an avid world traveler is troubled by people getting into problems and sometimes sacrificing lives trying to scale the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.

An increasing number of people from around the world, including Canada, are fascinated by Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.

Several Cornwall residents have successfully trekked to the “Roof of Africa” in the past couple of years.

“The mantra of the mountain is pole pole,” insists Muslim Harji.

Pole is a Swahili word meaning slow.

Harji said people have to take time and not rush to reach the summit.

“Never rush. You climb it slowly. The mountain is not going to go away.”

Harji settled in Cornwall in 1968.

His parents were fourth generation Africans.

Most Asians and other were evicted from their native Uganda by the brutal and ruthless dictator Idi Amin.

Harji’s brother and sister still reside in Cornwall.

His late brother in law Abdul Ismaily was city’s planner.

Harji started working and Howard’s and Sons which was later bought by BASF. He attended St. Lawrence College and later moved to Montreal to start his own business.

“I love adventure,” said Harji.

Accompanied by his wife Nevin, Harji has visited more than 50 countries around the world.

The couple has experienced the beauty of the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe and the most remote areas of Tajikistan.

ONTARIO - Le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario (BSEO) avertit les résidents que même si le cannabis est maintenant légal, il présente toujours des risques sérieux que les consommateurs doivent connaître. Cela comprend l’intoxication accidentelle qui peut se produire quand le cannabis ou les comestibles au cannabis ne sont pas rangés de façon sûre.

Des incidents récents dans la région ont causé quelques hospitalisations à la suite d’intoxication accidentelle. Le cannabis avait été ajouté à des pâtisseries faites maison qui ont été consommées plus tard par quelqu’un qui ne savait pas qu’elles contenaient du cannabis. « Il est très important de conserver tout cannabis ou aliments préparés avec du cannabis soigneusement, hors de la portée ou de la vue.

Les enfants, les animaux de compagnie, les invités ou les adultes qui n’ont pas d’idée ou qui ont oublié, peuvent sans le savoir, consommer des aliments contenant du cannabis, laissés à la main », avertit Robyn Hurtubise, gestionnaire

du programme de prévention du mésusage des substances au BSEO. « Si quelqu’un ne sait pas qu’il ou elle consomme un produit comestible au cannabis, ils peuvent en prendre une quantité dangereuse, » poursuit-elle.

Les conséquences d’une consommation accidentelle peuvent varier d’une expérience qui mène à la détresse, à des effets sur la santé qui exigent une intervention médicale et à conduire sans savoir que les facultés sont affaiblies.

Bien que fumer le cannabis puisse produire un effet rapide, les comestibles, toutefois, peuvent prendre jusqu’à 2 heures avant de faire effet et cet effet peut durer jusqu’à 24 heures pour certaines personnes.

Il est possible de réduire le risque d’en consommer accidentellement en prenant les mesures suivantes : Si des enfants vivent avec vous ou viennent vous visiter, ne préparez pas d’aliments comestibles au cannabis qui pourraient les attirer (ex. des comestibles qui ont l’air de bonbons ou de collations qui plaisent aux enfants).

Conserver le cannabis et les comestibles au cannabis dans un endroit sûr, hors de la portée

et de la vue, dans un contenant ou un endroit fermable sous clé. Étiqueter toujours les aliments qui contiennent du cannabis pour éviter qu’ils se mélangent aux autres aliments, ou qu’ils soient mangés par quelqu’un qui ne soupçonne pas la présence de cannabis.

Dans le cadre du module de recherche sur les fêtes et traditions, les amis de la classe de Mme Martine Chabot de l’école Rose des Vents ont eu la belle visite de Mme Gilberte Sabourin. Cette invitée bien spéciale est venue expliquer aux élèves les traditions de Noël d’autrefois.

Les amis en avaient long à me raconter puisque cette visite fut, pour eux, très intéressante et enrichissante! Ils ont appris que lors des Noël d’autrefois, les gens n’utilisaient pas de sapin artificiel. Ils allaient en forêt couper un sapin de Noël à l’aide d’une hache. Lors de sa tournée, le Père Noël déposait les cadeaux sur la table et non sous le sapin. Sur le mur de la cheminée, de vraies chaussettes de laine étaient suspendues au lieu des bas de Noël que nous achetons maintenant au magasin. Saint Nicolas qui est maintenant notre bon vieux Père Noël apportait des poupées au visage de porcelaine et non en plastique. Ces belles poupées étaient donc très -Austen Peachey: “J’ai aimé apprendre qu’ils fabriquaient leurs décorations.”; fragiles! Beau Noël d’antan!

ONTARIO - Noël est bien plus qu’une fête commerciale dans une école catholique du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO).

La période de l’Avent est un temps fort de l’année liturgique où doivent régner le partage, la simplicité et le don de soi. C’est dans cette perspective que plusieurs écoles du CSDCEO ont développé des activités visant à préparer le coeur des élèves à Noël. Sous la thématique « Changer le monde, un geste à la FOI! », nos écoles participent présentement à des levées de fonds, des spectacles de Noël, des crèches vivantes ou des parades. Une école a même fait un calendrier de l’Avent, sans chocolats. On y retrouve des messages de paix et d’amour qui sont partagés quotidiennement. L’Office provincial de l’éducation de la foi catholique de l’Ontario (OPÉCO) a élaboré une trousse d’animation pastorale pour l’Avent, que les équipes-écoles sont invitées à approfondir avec les élèves. La trousse regroupe des activités, des chants et des prières pour les élèves.

« C’est sous le thème Marcher de l’Avent dans la foi que les élèves et les membres du personnel des écoles catholiques de langue française du CSDCEO se préparent pour la fête de Noël. Cette préparation concorde avec la mission de notre Plan stratégique Réussite. Performance. qui aspire à ce que chaque élève devienne une citoyenne ou un citoyen animé d’une fierté pour sa foi catholique et qu’elle ou il contribue au mieuxêtre de la société. », mentionne M. François Turpin, directeur de l’éducation et secrétaire.

MacDonald starts second term as United Counties Warden NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario - North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald was sworn in as the new Warden of the United Counties of SD&G at a ceremony in Cornwall on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018.

The entire new council was also sworn in and introduced to the public. The United Counties Council is made up of the Mayors and Deputy Mayors of North and South Glengarry, North and South Dundas and North and South Stormont.

MacDonald was elected to lead the Council as Warden unopposed. He will serve for one year.

MacDonald previously served as Warden in 2016

In his closing remarks, MacDonald took a light hearted turn.

“Lastly, thanks to Warden Ian McLeod for his service this past year. See how much I have grown up? Very few sarcastic comments about people,” said MacDonald. “Like Mayor Byvelds who is Steve 2.0, I am Jamie 3.0, younger, stronger, faster, less sarcastic.”

MacDonald then made a few lighthearted comments at the expense of outgoing Warden Ian McLeod, former North Stormont Deputy Mayor Bill McGimpsey and former North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan.

CORNWALL, Ontario – On Monday, Dec. 17 the OSPCA of SDG announced a goal to find homes for 23 pets before the end of the year.

Since Nov. 1 of this year, 121 pets have been adopted in the community through the OSPCA iAdopt for the Holidays campaign, supported by Royal Canin. Last year, over 4,000 pets were adopted across Canada through the campaign.

The trail options can be divided up into smaller loops or they can be ridden as one big adventure,” said Joe McNamara, FOTST Board member and fat bike enthusiast.

The United Counties of SDG, owners of the Summerstown Forest, are very much in favour of this new activity being made available as it is in line with their intention of encouraging greater use of their properties by the citizens of SDG. It is anticipated that this initiative will attract fat bikers from other areas to come to the Summerstown trails, as the trails will offer a new and interesting challenge to all fat bike enthusiasts. “SDG continues to invest in the county owned forests in many ways and through SDG Regional Tourism’s promotion and outreach, this additional use will attract trail traffic, not only from SDG, but reaching beyond our borders to the fat bike enthusiast crowd,” declared Jamie MacDonald, SDG Warden.

In order to achieve more stability and get better traction, fat bikes (sometimes call snow bikes) have tires with a minimum width of 9.4 cm (3.5 inches) with a tire pressure less than 10 pounds of air. As a result, they do not attain great speeds and will not pose a danger to the snowshoers and other walkers on the trails. In fact, the common rules of etiquette adopted everywhere stipulate that fat bikers must yield to the other trail users.

The Friends of the Summerstown Trails will be hosting their annual Official Opening Day on Sunday, January 6, and in collaboration with Total Cyclery and Sports and Specialized Bicycles, a fat bike demo will be offered to those who wish to try this new activity. The trails are situated on Summerstown Road, 1.6 km north of exit 804 of the 401, and are open seven days a week. There is no charge to access the trails.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Pad One at the Benson Centre was overflowing with excited students, teachers and parents on the evening of Monday, Dec. 10 during the first-ever Sisters’ Cup hockey tournament.

“The (tournament) idea came from many years of the boys getting the Bishop Cup and they also have their annual football game called the Charity Bowl,” said Perry Ruffo, Sisters’ Cup volunteer and father of Holy Trinity Captain, Madison.

Female hockey players of Holy Trinity Catholic High School and St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School put their best skate forward in their first hockey tournament between rival schools. The final 3-1 score of the game saw the Falcons victorious, with Holy Trinity Captain Madison scoring the final goal.

“This has been in the works for a number of years with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO), to get an event for the girls to showcase one of their school sports.

What better way than a hockey game with H.T. against St. Joe’s,” said Ruffo. Ruffo acknowledged that with the Bishop Cup in its 11th year, it was due time to incorporate a Sisters’ Cup. Ruffo explained how important the game was to his daughter. Madison, who is in her final year at Holy Trinity, will be going to university next fall.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The 57th Annual Astro Storage & Warehousing Bonspiel is in the books as played wrapped up on the weekend. The “A” Championship saw the team of Brent Lawson defeat veteran Neil MacLean with Lawson having hammer take a single in the 1st end.

MacLean answered with a deuce in the 2nd and stole two more in the 3rd and a single in 4th to go up 5-1. It was all Lawson after that taking a single in the 5th , two more in the 6th, two more in the 7th on way to a 9-5 win.

The “A” Consolation Final saw Mike Villeneuve take on Gerrard Samson with Villeneuve having hammer take a deuce in the 1st end with Samson taking a deuce in the 2nd to knot the score at two. Villeneuve took another two in the 3rd with Samson answering with two in the 4th and stealing a single in the 5th. Villeneuve replied with two in the 6th to tie the score at 6.

Samson scored a huge 4 ender in the 7th on way to a 10-6 win.

The “B” Final saw Dave Lalonde play Peter Lindop with Lalonde stealing a single in the 1st and stealing one more in the 2nd. Lindop answered with a single in the 3rd but it was all Lalonde after that taking 3 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th on route to a 10-1 win.

CANADA - Certain brands of cauliflower and lettuce have been recalled nationally due to fears of E. coli contamination.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) certain cauliflower, red leaf and green leaf lettuce produced by Adam Bros.

Farming Inc. of Santa Maria, California, U.S. have been recalled.

The cauliflower are wrapped in the Adam Brothers Family Farms logo, the lettuce however

is not branded and customers are encouraged to check with the retailer to ensure that the lettuce they are purchasing is not included in the recall.

“This recall was triggered by a recall in the US which resulted from an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 linked to the consumption of romaine lettuce,” the CFIA states on their website. “The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is working with the United States Food and Drug Administration, and is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.

If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public through updated Food Recall Warnings. The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.”

Symptoms of E. coli include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea.

“In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die,” the CFIA states.

Cornwall, ON – Jonathan Lauzon, 32, of Cornwall was arrested on Tuesday, Dec. 11 and charged with mischief under $5000 and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace.

It is alleged the man threw an object at a Water Street building, causing damage, and police were contacted to investigate.

On December 11, the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter.

He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

WOMAN ARRESTED FOR CARRYING TASER

WOMAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTS STRANGER, TAKES THEIR DOG

CORNWALL, Ontario - Amanda Tryon, 27, of Cornwall was arrested on Dec. 15, 2018 and charged with unauthorized possession of a weapon and breach of probation for possessing a weapon and for failing to keep the peace.

It is alleged on Dec. 15, 2018, while stopped at the port of entry, the woman was observed in possession of a taser gun and police were contacted to investigate.

During the investigation, the woman was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on Jan. 17, 2019.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Kayla Ingram, 26, of Cornwall was arrested on Dec. 16, 2018 and charged with robbery, mischief under $5,000, threats, assault, and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace.

It is alleged on Dec. 16, 2018, the woman assaulted and threatened a woman walking a dog, who was not known to her. The woman allegedly damaged the leash and left the area with the dog.

Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During the investigation, the woman was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

He was last seen on December 10, 2018 at approximately 6:00 pm in the area of Dundee Ave. Police do not believe foul play is suspected, however, officers are looking to confirm his wellbeing and would like to speak to him or anyone with information concerning his whereabouts.

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates.

“In honor of this holy season,” Saint Peter said, “You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.”

The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. “It represents a candle,” he said. “You may pass through the pearly gates,” Saint Peter said.

The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, “They’re bells.” Saint Peter said, “You may pass through the pearly gates.”

The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s glasses.

St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, “And just what do those symbolize?”

The man replied, “They’re Carol’s.”
