Eric Duncan to run for region’s Conservative nomination Shawna O’Neill

SD&G, Ontario - CORNWALL, SDG – Eric Duncan remembers door-knocking throughout North Dundas when he was 18-years-old and running for municipal councillor. A little over a decade later, he is putting his name forward in hopes of running in the 2019 Federal Election, ready to revisit his community door-to-door.

“With Guy’s announcement on Saturday that he’s not going to run in the Federal Election this fall, I’m going to put my name forward to seek the Conservative nomination in our riding of SDG,” explained Duncan in an exclusive interview with Seaway News. “If all goes well, hopefully I will be on the ballot this fall.”

Duncan said that should he have the honour of representing our region, he understands there will be high expectations for him to match Lauzon’s level of customer service and constant presence at community events.

“There’s big shoes to fill with Guy, I know that,

but I’m ready for the challenge,” said Duncan.

“Support so far has been great.”

Duncan’s passion for politics speaks through his tireless experience in the field since the age of 18. Right out of high school, Duncan attended Carlton University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. While receiving his education, he acted as a municipal councillor in North Dundas for four years. In 2010 at the ripe age of 22, Duncan was elected Mayor in the municipality. In 2014 he acclaimed the title of Mayor for another four years.

Additional to his 12 years on council, Duncan was elected Warden of the United Counties in 2014, making him the youngest Warden in 168 years. Duncan has also chaired the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus. He has worked with MP Guy Lauzon for nine years and was a campaign manager three times for both MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim McDonell. Duncan also has private sector experience having worked at his family’s trucking business in South Mountain.

“I have been interested in public life and public policy for as long as I can remember,” said Duncan. “I believe I have the right mix of experience. My message to everyone is I’m ready to hit the ground running on day one.”

Duncan believes that Carbon Tax will be a major point of discussion at a national and local level during the upcoming federal campaigns.

He is prepared to prioritize and discuss supply management, supporting culture in the United Counties and knowing infrastructure needs. He hopes to act as a connector for the region, representing in Ottawa and getting tax dollars back to the right places in the community.

“I want people to know that they can go to their MP’s office and get help with any federal issues,” he said.

Duncan is excited to take part in a variety of community events pertaining to the nomination and election. Since releasing duties as Mayor in Dec. 2018, he has had time to reenergize and channel his efforts towards receiving a

“I love campaigns in the sense of getting out to see people. I tell people it’s kind of ironic…I hate politics. I hate pettiness, attacks, all the negative things that (could) go with it, but I love public policy and my time in the municipal government…if we have a problem, we have to try and find solutions,” he said.

The United Way of SD&G will begin the recruitment process to replace Bingley next week.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The United Way of SD&G has announced that their Director of Operations, Meagan Bingley, will be leaving the organization as of Feb. 21.

Bingley has been Director of Operations at the United Way of SD&G since late July.

“This was an extremely difficult decision to make. I received an unexpected offer to go back

into the insurance industry; it is an opportunity that I need to explore.” Bingley explained. “I am truly honoured that I had the opportunity to serve our community. I have always known that there is a high need for support services in our area, but working for the United Way has been an eye-opening experience.”

Bingley said she would do whatever she could to help the United Way during this transition period and intends to stay involved in the

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Seaway Valley Theatre Company (SVTC)’s latest show, The Drowsy Chaperone will be premiering on Feb. 15 at Aultsville Theatre.

The show is a comedy and a musical set in 1928. The story of The Drowsy Chaperone revolves around a man who loves music and has a madeleine moment when he starts to play his favourite record in his living room.

Suddenly he and the audience are drawn into the story of The Drowsy Chaperone, a tale of colourful characters whose narratives intertwine during the lead up to a wedding.

“There are a lot of little unique elements of the play audiences will enjoy,” said Director Lacie Petrynka.

The play has skating, tap dancing, roller blading, singing and more.

The cast boasts 22 actors including veterans of SVTC and new faces. Some of the characters

include two gangsters trying to pass as pastry chefs who intend to through a wrench in the wedding plans, a nervous groom-to-be portrayed by Cameron Brunet and of course, the Drowsy Chaperone herself portrayed by Brenda Quesnel, a veteran of the Upper Canada Play House.

Show times for the play are at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 15, 16, 22 and 23 with a 1:30 p.m. matinee on Feb. 17. Tickets are available at the Aultsville Theatre box office or at www.svtc.ca .

Off-duty North Glengarry firefighter saves two from burning vehicle Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

NORTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - North Glengarry firefighter was off-duty and on his way home from Ottawa on Friday, Jan. 25 when he spotted a burning vehicle on the side of Hwy 417 near Vars.

“I thought the vehicle was just overheated, but as I drove past it to park on the shoulder of the road, I could see flames shooting from the

car,” said Shannon, who quickly exited his own vehicle and raced towards the fire.

Shannon saw two individuals struggling to exit the vehicle. He successfully help the two out of the vehicle and brought them to a safe distance away and called 9-1-1.

“Without the training I received as a firefighter, I wouldn’t have known how fast the situation could escalate. When I arrived, there were people standing very close to the burning car. I moved the people back and within minutes, the

vehicle was completely engulfed in flames,” said Shannon.

Shannon remained on the scene until the Ottawa Fire Department arrived to put out the flames and care for the two individuals.

Shannon has been a volunteer with the North Glengarry Fire Department for the past year. He chose to become a volunteer firefighter to be closer to his community and credits the training he received with helping him that day on Hwy 417.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Approximately 145 teams rolled into Olympia Bowl and Nativity Bowling on Saturday, Feb. 2 for Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake.

Community members of all ages showed their support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District.

“Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.

It’s going well,” said Ron Graham, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

“We have done some rough tallies and we are about halfway there (to last year’s total fundraised),” said Graham. “It’s well organized. I have

to thank all of my staff and everyone here. They’re doing a great job.” Graham said that volunteers were actively recruiting ‘Bigs’ during the event.

“I believe we are up to about 60 mentors right now but we still have over 100 children on the waiting list,” said Graham. “Funding (raised) goes towards our mentoring one-on-one.”

This year, the two Chairpeople of the event included Chief Danny Aikman and Betty Wheeler.

“Chief Aikman was on our board before…so we thought it would be a good fit, to bring him back and be our Chair. In the Counties we have Betty Wheeler as our chair out there…she brings in over $5,000 each year by herself,” said Graham.

The 41st annual Tim Hortons Bowl for Kid’s Sake raised $67,500 for the Cornwall chapter of

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters.

There were 170 teams and 850 bowlers who participated this year. “We’re extremely grateful for the community’s support for our largest annual fundraiser,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Ron Graham. “Both our Honourary Chairs did a fantastic job of helping us promote the 2019 event.”

Tim Horton’s was the title sponsor of the event once again this year, with other sponsors being Leon’s, Dr. Navaneelan, Cornwall Toyota and Shoeless Joe’s.

The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall made a $5,062 contribution to the event with several other local service clubs also participating and getting pledges.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Groups of friends and families were set to watch Super Bowl LIII at Jet Set Pub the evening of Sunday, Feb 3.

Although most residents at the pub were cheering for the New England Patriots, some wanted to see the L.A. Rams take the title this year.

“I’d like to see somebody different win every year to change it up,” said Dave Watson who was watching the game with a group of friends he plays hockey with.

Other attendees just wanted to see Brady in his glory.

“I’ve always been a Brady fan since he played for Michigan. I’m a Cincinnati fan but we can’t seem to make the Super Bowl so I always have to cheer for someone else,” joked Richard Wilson. “I mean (Brady), he is 41 and he’s going for his sixth Super Bowl. At that age, still at this level, it’s pretty much unheard of. He is the greatest of all time. As a Bengals fan, I hate Joe Montana who used to be the greatest winning Super Bowl quarterback, so I want all of his records shattered too. There’s a bit of spite there.”

Pierre Parent and his brother Julian were looking forward to what the half time show hold, given the controversy with headliner Maroon 5. Cousins and aunts of the Parent

family were all out in attendance.

“We try to go out every year (for the Super Bowl). We go again for the Grey Cup together,” said Pierre. “It’s a great atmosphere (here), close to home; we love it here.”

The Pierre family was betting on the Patriots.

“They seem to struggle against bird teams but they’re not playing a bird team tonight so,” joked Julian.

“I hope it’s a great game. Last year’s Super Bowl was awesome. I hope the Rams stay in it but the Patriots win,” said Wilson.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall Comfort Quilts lined one of the hallways at the Care Centre with some of their most recently completed patterns.

The quilters made around 20 new quilts all together and had the chance to try new techniques and patterns.

The quilts were completed between October and Christmas and they were hung up in one of the hallways of the Care Centre on Jan. 30 to celebrate.

The Cornwall Comfort Quilters have between 30 and 40 active members. The quilts they create are for cancer patients, they are also given to CHEO

and the Northern Mission. Each quilt is probably around 40 hours of labour estimates Nicole McIntyre, a member of the group.

“We’re all quilters and we have a few beginners,” said Laura LeBoeuf who helped coordinate the latest project. “This new project allowed us to learn some new techniques and to have some fun.

We have fun around quilting.”

Cornwall Comfort Quilters offer a free service for cancer patients. A person suffering from cancer who has never received a quilt before can come to The Cornwall Comfort Quilters show off their latest projects at the Care Centre the Cornwall Comfort Quilters at the Care Centre (Nick Seebruch/ TC Media). on the corner of Second St. and Marlborough St. The Comfort Quilters accept donations of someone in their work space. and pick a Comfort Quilt for themselves.

There’s only one thing better than sliced bread, or an E-mail from some African lawyer that states, “You are the only known relative of the late Immibo Jondura and will therefore be the recipient of his estate of $34,583,000…” or a guarantee that “This vehicle will get up to 95 mpg…”

What could be better than all of the above? The public library system, of course. In education-speak, libraries are now referred to as ‘media resource centres’. Rather than be diminished by the arrival of a plethora of post-Gutenberg media, their importance has increased.

Here are some of my local Ingleside library experiences. On a weekly basis, I browse through copies of three local newspapers; take out recently published books and access some classics through the inter-library exchange system; took home every DVD of the hilarious British “Doc Martin” series; attended presentations given by local authorities and enthusiasts about travel safety, crafting, photography and painting.

If you’re a local artist, sculptor, photographer or author, the library offers an idea setting for your vernissage or book launch. Hopefully, your finissage won’t take place on the very same day.

“What’s a ‘vernissage’?” I didn’t what it was either, until I was invited to one. Only after I consulted with Mr. Google, I didn’t know if I should wear rubber boots or pol-

This year’s travels took our 1995 VW Eurovan all the way out to Vancouver Island - and back. It was our home away from home, but unlike our immobile home, the van has none of the following amenities, but libraries do: a Wi-fi connection to send and receive E-mails, check on the weather forecast and get an update on what countries are currently at each others’ throats, and inform myself of the latest occurrences of civil unrest, ambitious wall-building projects, earthquakes, tsunamis, brush fires, sink holes, glacier calvings, dry spells, wet spells and humid spells.

Unlike our little home on wheels, libraries have a washroom, air conditioning, generous work surfaces and comfy easy chairs. They are well stocked with interesting magazines, especially ones written about local lore and written by local authors. Of course, there are local newspapers and posters advertising local events. There’s usually a take-a-book, and a leave-a-book area.

Sometimes we’ve been offered coffee and cookies.

However, hospitality has always been available. If you keep your audio level to one of an exchange of juicy gossip or sins enumerated in a confessional, a polite conversation can be conducted.

Our day’s canoeing can get abbreviated, or even scrubbed, by nasty weather, especially during long, cool and dark autumn evenings. That’s when we find ourselves in the homey atmosphere of New York’s Adirondack area libraries: Long Lake, Inlet, Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.

Libraries can be a home away from home. Use them.

Support them. They are tax dollars well spent.

It is February and it is Black History month. This is a special year for the history of black Canadians in Cornwall as we have elected the first black female mayor in the history of the province of Ontario.

The story of Bernadette Clement moving to Cornwall, finding success in both public and private life while breaking barriers is not entirely unique in the City’s history. Cornwall’s first Recreation Director was Bob Turner, and not only was he Cornwall’s first Recreation Director, but he was also the first the city’s first black employee and the first black Recreation Director in Ontario.

Turner was hired by the city in 1958. Early in his tenure with the city, Turner faced race-based harassment in the form of letters and late-night phone calls to his home. The messages sent to Turner were by all accounts hate-filled, laced with the n-word and always anonymous.

Turner took the step of moving his family out of town and was prepared to call it quits and leave. The community however, rallied around Turner.

Community members young and old came out and marched in front of City Hall to show their support for their Recreation Director.

Mayor L.G. Lavigne went on the radio and called out Turner’s attackers as “vicious, vulgar and slanderous cowards” which they were.

Thankfully, Turner decided to stay in Cornwall. The recreation programs that he started saw more than 9,000 kids sign up and benefit.

In 1961, a new recreation centre was built next to the football field on Fourth St. Just a year later however, Turner tragically passed away at the age of 35 after slipping into a coma on the operating table at the Cornwall General Hospital. His new recreation centre was renamed the Bob Turner Memorial Arena in his honour.

That arena was torn down in 2013.

As of today, there is no building, soccer field or park bench that bears the name, Bob Turner, something that I feel is a sad injustice for a man who played such an important role in the history of Cornwall.

I’ve been covering Cornwall City Council since 2016 and every year around this time, council puts forward ideas on how best to honour the memory of Bob Turner. I think that these efforts are important and a great start.

Sites I believe that could be renamed for Bob Turner include the new Rotary outdoor gym in Lamoureux Park, perhaps the bandshell, or the planned soccer fields that are expected to be installed next to the Benson Centre, pending funding from Council.

Perhaps this year, this February, this Black History month will be the one that sees Bob Turner’s place in Cornwall’s history finally honoured once again.

This week in 1961, Cornwall General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital said the supply of beds was not meeting the high demand.

HDH, with 266 beds, had 70 people on its wait list. Over at the General, with 168 beds, 40 people were waiting for a bed. Both hospitals reported a shortage of registered nurses.

(The honeymoon didn’t last long. A couple of years later Ball was chased from the pulpit after his wife ran as the New Democratic Party candidate.) .... Mr. and Mrs. Martin Vanderydt and 10 children fled their burning farm house near Lancaster in the early-morning hours. The home was destroyed. Fire fighters from Lancaster fought the fire in minus 26 F weather. .... In Cornwall, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowen and their five children were homeless after fire gutted their Lauber Avenue home. ... The new OPP District 11 Headquarters in Long Sault held an open house. The HQ and detachment replaced one on Augustus Street in Cornwall. ... Unable to find anyone to take the president’s position, the Cornwall Retail Merchants Association elected three vice-presidents to run the group: Marcel Clouthier, Frank Lang and Norm Baril. ... To ease overcrowding, a 17-room addition was planned for Glengarry District High School in Alexandria. ... Len Stidwill was elected president of the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. ... Rick Plamondon of Classical College won the Holy Name Juvenile Hockey League scoring title.

TRIVIA ANSWER It was former world heavyweight boxing champ Jack Dempsey who was referee for a professional wrestling card at the old Water Street Arena on May 3, 1949. Not that he needed the money, he owned a successful New York City restaurant and was married to a Hollywood actress. Dempsey held the title from 1919-1926 when he lost to Jack Tunney. The fight had a record crowd of 120,000 and the first million dollar gate.

I doubt Ron Joyce, the billionaire founder of the Tim Hortons’ coffee empire who died last week at age 88, knew anything about St. Lawrence College’s Cornwall campus when he wrote out a cheque for $2 million and sent it off to the school.

A few months earlier Joyce, a high school dropout, had given the University of Windsor $10 million.

In both cases, the money was to fund bursaries for qualified students.

The common thread in both generous donations was former Cornwall mayor and MP Ed Lumley who had became a good and trusted friend of the coffee chain founder.

There was one string attached to the University of Windsor donation: It had to be called the Ed Lumley Bursary. At the time, Lumley, a U of W grad, was the university’s chancellor and the new engineering innovation centre took on his name.

A few months later, Lumley convinced his billionaire pal to make a donation to St. Lawrence College. The $2 million was, and still is, the single largest donation to SLC. And while Joyce might not have known anything about the SLC campus, he knew something about Cornwall. It was where the first Tim Hortons outside the Hamilton/Burlington region set up shop. Cornwall had a Tim Hortons before Toronto and Ottawa.

Gerry Lalonde, one of the partners of the new Cornwall franchise, on Brookdale Avenue,

recalled Joyce coming to the city to help get the store up and running. That included lending a hand at baking doughnuts on the overnight shift.

Joyce had decided to add a drive through to his stores, something armchair quarterbacks said would not work. (Have you seen a Timmies’ drive through?)

Lalonde told the story of taking a smoke break with Joyce outside the city’s first Tim Hortons store as the sun was coming up. The future billionaire turned to him, as drivers placed their orders at the speaker, nodded and said, “You know, this just might work.” *************** Does this have a familiar ring?

The president of the Canadian Bar Association said it was taking too long for criminal cases to reach the trial stage.

Stanley Fennell, a Cornwall lawyer, called on the senior governments to appoint more judges and open more court rooms to speed up the lumbering court system and its backlog.

That was in 1961, when many serious criminal cases took up to a year to reach trial. These days, that is the target.

Fennell said the judicial system had not kept pace with the growth of the country since the Second World War and he put the blame on the shoulders of the senior governments.

He also made another bold statement: The appointment of judges should be based on ability and experience and not the political membership card they carried.

“Politics shouldn’t play a part (in appointments),” he said.

TRANSITION CORNWALL+ is running its annual free film series in partnership with the Cornwall Public Library. Sunday, Feb. 10 at 1:30 the Food Action Group is presenting Plant this Movie. An exploration of the current state of urban farming around the world. Cornwall is launching its new Edible Cities initiative this year, with the first plantings of perennial edible bushes and trees in Lamoureux Park.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Les organisations francophones locales se sont rencontrées à Jack Lees le vendredi 1er février pour leur réunion trimestrielle. < L’objectif de ces événements est de se réunir trois à quatre fois par année pour rencontrer d’autres francophones », a déclaré Ivan Labelle, l’un des organisateurs.

Chaque fois que les groupes se rencontrent, ils essaient d’avoir un conférencier spécial. Cette fois-ci, la mairesse de Cornwall, Bernadette Clement.

Parmi les sujets abordés par Clément avec son audience citons le budget municipal de 2019, l’aménagement du secteur riverain de Cornwall et les efforts visant à développer la communauté francophone.

Clement a expliqué que Cornwall souhaitait faire partie d’un programme pilote fédéral visant à encourager l’immigration francophone dans les communautés francophones.

Cornwall est en concurrence pour ce programme contre Hawkesbury.

Clement a encouragé son auditoire à envoyer des suggestions à l’hôtel de ville sur les moyens de mieux servir la communauté francophone.

l’Histoire des Noirs Bravo à l’équipe de Dianne Poirier pour cet énorme succès dimanche dans l’église Nativité, pour signaler le début du mois de l’Histoire des Noirs. Un groupe de cinquante musiciens et choristes africains nous ont fait une vivante démonstration d’une cérémonie vivement culturelle tout en n’oubliant pas le religieux. La danse se mêlait aux chants et à la musique. Venus d’Ottawa mais originaires du Burundi, leur venue à Cornwall a fait la joie de notre Père Emmanuel et Willy Nunga, un de ses amis ruandais, qui a tapé avec énergie sur son dzémbé. Pierre Landulandu, un ancien de la République démocratique du Congo était un spectateur énergique.

Doublement heureux, le Père Emmanuel Ngiruwonsanga nous a dit que les Burundais et les Ruandais parlent la même langue. Les choristes ont aussi chanté en français avec un refrain de When the Saints Come Marching In en anglais. L’allocution du Père (c’était aussi l’homélie) a signalé

l’importance de la charité et de l’accueil entre les peuples de toutes les origines.

Plus tard, notre Mairesse, Bernadette Clement, a suivi ce thème lorsqu’on lui a demandé de dire un mot. Et la fête continue puisque plusieurs paroissiens et leurs invités chantent et dansent avec les choristes.

Ce n’est pas tout. Après cette prestation, nous nous rendons au Carrefour pour un gouter-repas. Les échanges, les chants et les danses continuent tout en mangeant. Les convives se quittent lentement vers 14 h avec un nouveau lien d’amitié et une promesse d’invitation à venir.

La chorale prend l’autobus pour Ottawa.

Pas habitués à tant d’activité à l’église, les paroissiens d’âge d’or doivent être de retour à la maison pour se reposer!

“The design of the day was based on the suggestion from our youth council to raise awareness of youth mental health,”explained Deena Shorkey, Director of Child and Youth Mental Health Services at CCH, in a press release.

Originally, the youth council wanted to decorate t-shirts with positive messages. Staff decided to expand on the idea and host additional activities, including a photo booth with the message

‘You are not alone’, a game of jeopardy based on positive messages and an art class. Door prizes were also available.

“We wanted to showcase our new building as an inviting space, ensuring that youth are comfortable in reaching out should they need help some day,” said Shorkey. “It’s our first year having this type of event in honour of “Bell Let’s Talk” day, and we had over several local youth attend.”

Although staff had planned the day for youth, many CCH employees and adults in the community attended to show support and decorate a t-shirt.

“I think people are really aware (of Bell “Let’s Talk” Day) and it really gives the message about talking. If there’s one message we can give to

parents, to youth is really talk to people…if you’re getting texts or getting sharings from your friends that you’re concerned about, really talk to an adult.

Don’t keep that to yourself.”

The CCH was thankful that Tim Hortons donated coffee and muffins, Youth Wellness Hub Ontario donated prizes and Bell provided swag for the event. CCH’s Child and Youth Mental Health Services donated door prizes, snacks and pizza.

“The nice thing about this building is that it’s integrated and a one stop place to come,” said Shorkey in regards to CAMHC servicing individuals of all ages. “People can call and then we will find the right service for them so they don’t have to worry…we are all together, working together.”
