CORNWALL, Ontario – Heart of the City presented a streetscape beautification concept to City Council on Monday, Feb. 11.

The new look primarily targets Water St. and Brookdale Ave. where travellers arrive from the U.S. border crossing. The overall project comes with an estimated price tag of $100,000.

Two gateway welcoming features, as pictured, are proposed for the corner of Brookdale Ave. and Water St. Projected to be made of longlasting materials and locally sourced, each feature would cost approximately $35,000. The addition of a Canadian flag would also be incorporated.

Triangle banners denoting the Waterfront, Le Village and Downtown are proposed to be affixed on existing light fixtures along each corresponding corridor. “Heart of the City has been looking at (streetscapes) for the better part of last year,” said Todd Lihou, Centretown Coordinator with Heart of the City. Lihou explained that partners and stakeholders agree, the waterfront is our city’s best asset. In 2011, a Streetscape Revitalization Strategy was drafted for Heart of the City by EDA Collaborative, which has been followed and revisited since its initial recommendations for our region.

During the council meeting, an additional proposal was presented by the Downtown Business Improvement Association (DBIA). The project, which aims to replace the current lighting fixtures on Pitt St., will cost an estimated

$163,000. In anticipation of the project, the DBIA is prepared to ask $50,000 and supplement the additional fees.

Lihou explained that the box lighting would be changed to reflect the lantern style lighting seen in other areas of the downtown core.

Council received both the presentation and the correspondence about the lighting and will review the matters come budget time.

Feb. 7 as Optimist International Day. “The Optimist volunteers have always demonstrated a true dedication to their community and most particularly to the future of our kids,” said Mayor Bernadette Clement in a press release. “I salute them on this special Optimist International Day but I am grateful to them all year long!”

Muir believes there will always be a need for youth activities in the city. He also believes that Cornwall is special when it comes to supporting their neighbours.

“This community has always been above average when there’s a need for something. You go out, you ask for support in this community and it’s fantastic. I find it’s even more when

you’re working for kids. People are always willing to help kids out,” said Muir.

When Muir joined the club about five years ago, the Optimist Club creed sold him on the importance of volunteer efforts. He believes that the sentiments within the creed should be carried throughout everyone’s life, like sporting the same enthusiasm towards your own success as well as the success of others.

“It’s really how we should look at life right,” said Muir. “I mean, optimism is a great thing.

Who doesn’t want to be optimistic? That’s what I’ve learned a lot of since joining this club.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Optimist International is celebrating 100 years of striving to offer impactful services within communities.

To celebrate and give thanks to our community, Optimist Club members will be distributing signature blue cupcakes during the Cornwall Colts hockey game on Thursday, Feb. 7. Optimist Club President Terry Muir will also be making the honorary puck drop.

“One hundred years is a huge milestone,” said Muir. “There are a number of service clubs that have been around that long. It’s nice to see organizations still thriving…some organizations have lost a lot of members and shrunk in

size…we’re lucky that (our organization) is alive and well, and growing.”

Servicing Cornwall for 71 years as of 2019, the Optimist Club has hosted several community events and fundraisers throughout the years.

Some of the most notable, current initiatives include the Christmas Toy Drive, Easter Egg hunt, Youth Achievement Awards, Youth Cycling Safety Sessions, Pinewood Car Derby Races, Ribfest, the Snowsuit Fund, an essay competition and sporting ventures like Optimist Minor Softball and Optimist Floor Hockey.

“We also get heavily involved in things like Stuff The Bus, Stuff The Cruiser. Anything to help out; they’re all great initiatives,” said Muir.

Snowshoers run through Summerstown Trails Nick Seebruch

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOSTST) hosted the Dion Snowshoe Race on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019.

There were 34 participants that donned Dion Snowshoes and took to the trails. There was both a long course at 7.55 km and a shorter course that was 3.5 km.

This was the sixth edition of the race that has taken place at the Summerstown Trails.

The winner of the 3.5 km race in the men’s division was Wendel Lafave of Williamstown. Clare Gallant of Pakenham finished the 3.5 km race first for the women’s division.

Their times were 23 minutes 57 seconds and 24 minutes 50 seconds respectively.

For the 7.55 km race, Rob Lefevbre of Williamstown finished first at 34 minutes 51 seconds in the men’s division, and Linda Gingras of Ottawa came in first for the women’s division at 36 minutes 30 seconds.

This was Wendel Lafave’s second ever Dion Snowshoe race, having previously competed in the race at Upper Canada Village.

“It was a good run, the snow was hard and crisp,” said Lafave. “It is beautiful in there and the cold doesn’t bother me too much.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Ryan Lalonde is a Cornwall native and an entertainer who knows a little something about magic. Right now, Lalonde is learning about the magic of community support as he finds local businesses who are eager to support local entertainment.

Lalonde is a magician who has the distinction of being the first solo Cornwall native entertainer to sell out a show at the Aultsville Theatre. He is returning to Aultsville March 8 & 9 and is asking for support from community business for his local act.

Currently, Lalonde has 11 businesses supporting him. Each supporter has purchased a certain level of tickets, and in return for that support.

Dave Petrynka of the restaurant Eight Zero Zero was

an early supporter of Lalonde and is one of the 11 businesses supporting him in this venture.

Lalonde began performing at Eight Zero Zero every Sunday for a couple of years, and wound up doing over 100 shows at the restaurant.

Businesses supporting Lalonde include Theoret Auto Body, World Financial Group, H. Moise Jr. Trucking, Grant Marion Construction, Villeneuve Creations, C.A.P.E, LV Fencing, Eight Zero Zero, MS Mechanical, KV Construction and the Cornwall Comedy Festival.

Lalonde thinks that this local funding model is something that other entertainers or events can consider in helping to support local.

AKWESASNE – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) released a statement on Wednesday, Feb. 6 reminding residents that cannabis-related businesses must obtain a license from the MCA prior to selling cannabis related products.

The reminder was released one day after Akwesasne

Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) raided two businesses, AK420 Dispensary on White Rd and Wild Flower Cannabis Dispensary on Island Rd. Police seized products including cannabis buds, cannabis accessories, a substance referred to as shatter and cash.

The Akwesasne Interim Cannabis Regulation (MCR 2018 #212) took effect on Oct. 17, 2018 when cannabis was T:10” legalized in Canada. The regulation designates that possession, use, cultivation, sale and distribution of cannabis in

Akwesasne is under the jurisdiction of the MCA. The interim regulation strives to prioritize health and safety within the community. Violations may result in prosecution under applicable legislation.

Currently, the MCA has not issued any licenses under the interim regulation. The MCA is working to ensure licensed distributors have access to designated safe, credibly supplied cannabis.

So far only Eric Duncan has decided to run in the 2019 federal elections. Duncan, a former warden of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry is a veteran municipal politician trying to replace Lauzon, He was the youngest warden of the United Counties.

Duncan has worked hard with MP Lauzon and also with MPP Jim McDonell.

Whoever replaces Lauzon will have big shoes to fill.

This past Saturday night I wanted to go out and enjoy Cornwall’s nightlife. Not so much because I was looking to socialize, but because I was too lazy to cook.

I went to three restaurants in Cornwall’s downtown, and was turned away from two because they were already full at 6:30 p.m., the third quickly filled up after I sat down.

I think the fact that at least three restaurants in Cornwall were packed on a random Saturday night in February is a great sign for the local economy.

While yes, it can be frustrating not to be able to go out and get a seat without a reservation, the fact that these restaurants are full means that the people of Cornwall and the surrounding area have disposable income.

One reason why I have optimism about the economy is that a night out for dinner is one of the first things that people will cut when times are tough. So many people being out on an evening that isn’t any special holiday, or Valentines’ Day or what have you, means that times are good. Imagine, come spring and summer, when events and special occasions are happening, what kind of business will be coming to Cornwall.

Cornwall Tourism needs to be acting now to capitalize on this to maximize returns for local businesses during prime tourism season.

If they don’t already, then Cornwall Tourism should be meeting with our locally owned independent restaurants and see what they could offer in terms of support.

Off of the top of my head, I feel like Tourism could run a promotional event during the summer focused around Cornwall’s Food and night life. The event could be something as simple as offering dinner and a show, or how about the City open up the future arts centre and give people a reason to go down town? While the old BMO building does need work, I feel like it could be easily setup to host a wine & cheese or a casino night.

If people have the disposable income and can afford to go out, Cornwall Tourism should be giving them reasons to.

Maybe I’m being overly optimistic, but I think that this is something that affects more than tourism. I was genuinely surprised to see so many people out at restaurants on Saturday night that now, I want to learn more about how the local economy really is doing and what local businesses and the City of Cornwall can do to capitalize on this growth.

Remembering Paul Dewar Dear Editor: The late Paul Dewar, former NDP MP for Ottawa- Centre, will be remembered as a dedicated, principled public servant who spoke truth to power. He worked with passion and optimism for social justice, human rights, peace in the world, and to protect the environment.

Paul Dewar was an inspiration to many Canadians as he worked for a better future for everyone. Locally, he was available to help the SDSG NDP riding association in its activities. Many local NDP members supported his progressive campaign in 2012 to become the leader of the Federal NDP. Paul Dewar’s passion for a better future continued into his last year when he

established his Foundation “Youth Action Now” to empower young people to change their communities for the better. May his legacy live on with “Youth Action Now”.

In Paul’s letter posted on his Facebook page after his death on February 6, he asks that we take better care of each other, empower those who have been left behind, concentrate on what we can contribute to our country, community and neighbours, and celebrate life.

We can learn much from this remarkable public servant and mentor who brought diverse people together and who saw the potential in everyone to do good.

Response to “Cornwall’s black history” Hello, I am writing in response to “Cornwall’s black history” editorial dated February 6, 2019.

It is time to honor Mr. Turner and to stop just talking about it. It still saddens me when I drive past the site of “The Bob” and it is no longer there. My sons and I had a lot of good times there for House League hockey and Saturday night skates, hanging out with friends and strangers sharing the love of skating and hockey. Good memories.

Stormont, the only riding in Canada without a candidate from at least one of the major parties. Why did both parties agree to sit out?

HERE AND THERE: A Toronto Sun poll on the weekend asked, “Have you lost faith in the Canadian justice system?” Of the 4,000 who replied, 82.57% said they had lost faith in the system.

• The trial of an Ottawa police officer charged with manslaughter took 2 1/2 years to get to trial and on the second day it was put on hold over a questionable piece of “last minute” evidence presented by the Crown.

• School snow days are starting to outnumber regular days.

• Prime Minister said lower income folks don’t pay taxes. Of course they do, on everything from gasoline to a cup of coffee.

• North Bay property owners are being told that a 7.93% tax levy hike is needed after years of keeping tax increases under 2%. The city’s budget chief said, “We’re going to have to bite the bullet and take the hit.”

• City and area icy conditions have put a big run on salt. Most stores on the weekend were out of bags of salt.

• When it comes to the Dems selecting a candidate to take on The Donald in 2020, pity former vice-president Joe Biden isn’t 10 years younger. You can bet they won’t give Hilliary another shot at handing Trump the election on a silver platter.

• Former Cornwall Royals’ captain (1972 Memorial Cup) Bob Murray back behind the bench after firing coach Randy Carlyle with the Ducks riding a sevengame losing skid.

• Edmonton Oilers’ season ticket holders should be asking for a refund.

BACK WHEN: Cars that came with ashtrays, some of them in the door arm rest just below the crank that opened and closed the window.

• When part of learning to drive was the use of hand signals.

• Cars with 8-track tape players and when radios and air conditioning were options.

• A key attached to the bottom of a can that was used to open it. At least you tried to open it.

You don’t have to be a soothsayer, fortune teller, psychic, or whatever the heck they are called, to predict this one: Eric Duncan will be the Conservative candidate in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry in October’s federal election.

That is a gimme.

A member of a prominent Conservative family who considered seeking the nomination has backed off and is supporting Duncan. Not sure why anybody in the local Conservative fold would want to oppose a blue chip candidate.

Things are not so clear over in the Liberal and New Democratic Party camps.

Neither seems to have a potential highprofile candidate which it will take to wrestle the riding from the Conservative grip.

Justin Towndale, who led the polls in October’s municipal election, and sometimes mentioned as a possible candidate has no interest in the nomination. He is committed to this term of council and his military obligations.

You can take Mayor Bernadette Clement off the speculation list. She too has no interest in the Liberal nomination after two kicks at the can. She will tell anyone who asks that she is where she wants to be in her political journey.

If elected, and it wouldn’t be engaging in wild speculation to suggest that his chances are better than good, Duncan will be the youngest - at 32 - member of Parliament to represent the federal riding that included Cornwall. Ed Lumley, the youngest person elected mayor of Cornwall (age 32), was 34 when elected MP for Stormont.

Being the youngest is familiar territory for the Dundas native. At 18 and still a student he became the youngest person elected to a United Counties council (North Dundas). Four years later, age 22, he became the youngest mayor. He followed this up by becoming the youngest United Counties warden in 168 years. Not once, but twice. The first two-term warden.

If, and it is a gigantic leap, the Conservatives form the next government Duncan will not have a shot at becoming Canada’s youngest cabinet minister. In 2017 Karina Gould, MP for Burlington, became Canada’s youngest cabinet minister when she was sworn in as minister of democratic institutions. She was 29.

A big advantage for Duncan in the October federal election, along with his exceptional resume, will be the support of a powerful, well-funded Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry election machine that

runs on high octane.

As they say in Vegas, the smart money will be on Duncan keeping the riding in the Conservative stable.

LOOKING BACK: 1963 - Bushnell Communications of Ottawa said CJSS Radio was up for sale. The company said six offers had been received, one from a Cornwall group • Cornwall Arts Association selected an art gallery as its Centennial Year (1967) project. The gallery would feature local artists.

• Leo Chevrier was elected president of Royal Canadian Air Force Association Wing 424.

• St. Joseph’s Nursing School (Hotel Dieu) graduates Joan Way and Mary Grant were employed at prestigious Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

• George Belmore took home the top prize of $50 in the Tournament of Champions bowling tournament. John Vincent was second while Jim Colucci finished third in a field of 50 bowlers. ...

• Lawrence Lapierre scored three times as the Royals downed Winchester 8-2 in an ODHA junior playoff game. Bernie Larue and Rene Lauzon had two apiece.

Larry Mallette had the other Royals’ goal.

• A 4,000-square-foot addition was announced for Newington Public School to ease overcrowding.

• John Mousseau was elected president of the East Cornwall Businessmen’s Association. Gerald Leblanc was vice-president.

• City public works employees Percy Bookout and Lawrence Murphy received their Class B icemakers’ papers.

• Hundreds of city and St. Regis students were absent from classes with the flu. At St. Regis school, 74 of 194 students and eight teachers were absent.

Father Michael Jacobs of St. Regis called the outbreak an emergency, while Dr. John Tallon said the outbreak had become an epidemic.

• An editorial in the StandardFreeholder commented on a new process that “may succeed in extracting oil from the Alberta tar sands.” ... Three men who pleaded guilty to being drunk in a public place and unable to pay their fines were sentenced in magistrate’s court to 10 days in jail. A man convicted of driving while his licence was under suspension was given a 30-day jail sentence.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Cornwall native Newsy Lalonde was a better player than coach. After just two seasons - 1932-34 - as head coach of the Montreal Canadiens, the future Hall of Famer was fired and replaced by general manager Leo Dandurand.

Le vendredi 8 février 2019, les élèves de l’école Rose des Vents ont profité de la neige et ont festoyé durant une journée de carnaval d’hiver. Plusieurs activités étaient au rendez-vous et il y en avait pour tous les goûts!

Les plus petits sont allés développer leurs habiletés motrices en allant au Club de gymnastique de Cornwall pour ensuite sauter et rire dans des structures gonflables et s’amuser à l’école dans des centres de jeux.

Pour le reste de l’école, les élèves de la 1ère à la 3e année sont allés jouer aux quilles et ont ensuite profité des structures gonflables et des centres de jeux à l’école.

Beloved husband of Deborah “Debi” (née Faubert) Poirier. Loving father of Kim Poirier-Froats (Danny). Cherished grandfather of Danielle and Rebecca “Becca”.

Dear brother of Norman Poirier and Mary Brown (late Frances). Brother-in-law of Ann Poirier (Hubert) and Nancy Tyo (Kenny). Predeceased by his parents David and Effie (née Raymond) Poirier. Also predeceased by his sister Bertha, and his brother-in-law Larry Faubert (Trish). He will be lovingly missed by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, family, friends and Special friendship of Brian and Nancy Derouchie and their family.

Peter was a quiet, unassuming, kind, humble man, he had a great passion for Dirt Racing, Ford Trucks and the Maple Leafs. DRIVING IN FREEZING RAIN Tim Houle Auto Talk If possible, it’s best to delay your travels until road crews have been able to tackle the icy conditions. Sometimes, however, you have no choice but to confront Mother Nature.

So here’s what to do: Slow down. As in any conditions that marginalize your safety on the road, slowing down is a fundamental step to increasing the odds you’ll make it to your destination safely.

Be smooth. Drive as if you have eggs between your feet and the pedals – be gentle when applying the brakes; ditto when pressing the accelerator. Don’t make sudden moves with the steering wheel, either. Remember the tires are struggling to get grip even at slow speeds, so any quick movements are going to destroy what minimal traction they may have had – and you’ll be heading for the ditch or worse.

Try to relax your “death grip” on the steering wheel – it will help you be more gentle in your steering corrections.

Give yourself room. Rather than using the brakes, it’s better in icy conditions to slow the vehicle by simply easing off the accelerator, but this means you’ll need more distance to stop. Therefore, leave more space between you and the vehicle ahead so you have room to stop safely. Also, try to allow more space around your vehicle in case others make sudden moves into your vehicle’s path.

Be sure you can see – and be seen. Before you get behind the wheel, start the car so it can warm up while you chip the ice off the windows. Don’t just clear a space

Visibility in all directions is essential, especially in these conditions. Be sure the wipers are functioning properly – they’ll be your best friend once you start driving. Freezing rain can build up instantly on the windshield, so crank up the fan and fully engage the windshield defroster setting. Turn on the rear window defogger, too. This is the time when your decision to put quality washer fluid (with a freezing point of at least minus 40 degrees) in the windshield washer reservoir pays dividends.

Spraying some on the windscreen will help the wipers cope with the freezing rain and muck from other vehicles. Also, be sure you’ve turned on your headlights – daytime running lights don’t necessarily activate a vehicle’s taillights so turning on the headlamps will ensure your vehicle is visible to others.

Our Editor, Nick Seebruch, would like to thank the good samaritan who pushed his car off of the snow bank this past Monday while he was on his way to council. Our Editor got stuck on the snowbank after sliding on the ice on Third St. between Augustus and York when he tried to avoid a white pick-up truck that was parked on the street. The truck took up half the street because of how big the snow banks are.
